250 Bayly St W Unit 8, Ajax, ON L1S 3V4, Canada
First time here, came based on good reviews. Very dissaponted. Had Grouper and Chips special. Fish very oily and not firm at all , not much taste. Batter was greasy , not flavourful at all. Chips average. Had upset stomach later. …seems to be going downhill fast ….Last 6 out of 10 reviews have only earned only 1 star.
Great service and fish and chips. Family business
I was driving by felt for fish and chips saw they had a lunch special. Honestly I feel bad leaving this review but in this economy purchasing from a small business and it tasting like a oil pocket is disappointing. I tried my hardest to eat it and ended up throwing it in the garbage. I WILL NEVER BE BACK. they need to revisit making fish and chips. The fish was pure oil and no taste. The fries just oil. Please get some cooking lessons or close down. This is a disservice to all the great food places in ajax.
We have been going to Balmoral Fish & Chips for years. We usually order two Halibut & one Chips for takeout for two of us to share. Always very tasty and good sized portions.
To be fair I have ordered from them twice only because sometimes you can get one bad order but in this case not only was the first order bad the second was even worse. Not sure if they are using lard to cook their fish and chips but it felt that way. Very greasy fries and fish not sure it was Haddock. For two orders of fish and chips was $36.10. Quite expensive and was horrible. Fish had no taste and texture very bad. Batter was just non edible. Fries were just simply full of some kind of cheap grease and very disgusting. I really hate to bash family businesses but in my opinion, walk 30 yards to MacKenzies and get great fish and chips on Friday for $12.99 and is amazing. Skip this place its not worth the money and you will regret it.
Ordered the grouper and chips. It was ok. The fries(aka chips) were well done. Wasn't over cooked. Never had grouper like this before. Staff is friendly. Place is nicely decorated.
This was our first time ordering fish and chips in Ajax and it was absolutely delicious! Being from England these certaintly compared to home and i would recommend them to everyone! We ordered a cod and haddock combo and both pieces of fish were very fresh, great sized portions and they both had the perfect amount of batter full of flavour! The chips were thick, fresh and tasted just like they do at home. I also ordered a small portion of mushy peas that were delicious also. Overall everything came very well wrapped and presented, great fresh and hot portions and we shall be back 100%! 🙂
This remains my very favourite fish and chip place. The halibut is such better quality than I get other places and the chips are perfect every time.
The worst fish and haggis I have ever tasted
The worst fish and chips ever. Take my word for it, dont go there.
I ve been to the Balmoral since the 1980s.I went recently and was Really disappointed with the meal.It has went downhill as regards to the service and the food.Gone are the real French fries and replaced with cheap frozen fries. Such a dissapoitent experience
Very busy, but well handled
Best fish and chips around; scallops, gravy and mushy peas are a must try too.
This is the most delicious chips and fish I ate in Toronto.
I love the chips and fish
I selected this place based on the good reviews but I must have visited on an off night. Batter was soggy and the fries tasted like frozen. Very disappointing meal for the $20 price tag.
The chicken fingers seem like they were purchased at nofrills, the fries were soggy and fish dripping with oil.... Waste of money for my children and myself, and during these hard times it hurts to throw money away....
Terr-i-ble . Just trust me. Find somewhere else. There are plenty of fish in the sea.
Ordered the halibut, poutine and the grouper and chips special. Pretty disappointing. The halibut was edible the grouper was not. Too much oil/grease. The fries were okay and the poutine looked like it had some kind cheese sauce vs mozzarella chunks. Sorry, won t be back.
The fish was okay. Didnt taste too fresh and the price wasnt reasonable at all. I paid over 17$ for a small piece of cod, fries and a can of diet coke. Ill definitely not be coming back.
I tried their chicken fingers and chips and it was awful. They use old oil which smells bad in their food. Chicken fingers were dry, stale and had no taste. I had to throw away my food. Waste of money here.
We always do takeout and Jenny always makes sure you have everything you need and will point out the best way to order food to save money. The food is always cooked properly and steaming hot when we get home! Only fish and chips store we go to !
One of the best fish and chips Ive had. Halibut is the way to go
Great service and great food.
Average fish and chips.
Worst fish and chips I have ever had dont waste your money frozen fish garbage
Cod family special
Good food, friendly greeting, quick service.
Incorrect order was delivered. Called location to correct, but no one was able to assist. To top it off, the staff member was laughing at the situation. Nothing resolved so had to deal with UBER directly.
Friendly family owned fish and chip restaurant! Best fish and chips in Ontario! Light batter with lots of flavor thay compliments the fresh halibut or hadock.
You waited 2 hours to cancel my order on UberEats. That s simply unacceptable. It s the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Typical Ontario poor service!
Went there yesterday for Good Friday . We ordered at 5:30 and was told to be there at 6:45 to pick it up . When we got there the place was packed . The sign on the door said 5 person capacity because of Covid restrictions. There were approximately 25 people inside the restaurant. There was absolutely no crowd control or structure to how they were doing things . We called to say we were outside and they told us to come inside in 10 min. The order was apparently ready but there was many people in line waiting to pay. No Covid protocols whatsoever. We just left without our order. Horrible experience.
Possibly the biggest disappointment of any take out I have puchased$14.00 for batter and a 1/8 thick piece of fish
Grabbed haddock and chips for lunch and asked for crispier chips, not disappointed was some of the best fish n chips ive had
Very friendly service. Got the white fish special...amazing value. The fish was lightly battered and tasty. The fries were crisp and reheated nicely. First time ordering from this restaurant...would have it again.
Should have taken a picture, just ordered and took home the cod and chips and it was the tiniest piece of fish. Before ordering from this place I looked at reviews and pictures and all the pics in google reviews had pictures that were 3x the size of the tiny piece of cod i got. Will never be ordering from here again.
Light, crispy, delicious. Very happy to have found this place! Ordered the family meal for 4 and chicken tenders. Should have gotten the gravy though.
Great fish n chips
Good pieces of Halibut hot fries cant get any better in Ajax!!
Very good fish and chips Reasonably priced Fast friendly Delicious
Fries are the real deal. Will try the fish next!
A mom and pop shop. The food is always fresh. Prices are great and I love the Grouper.
Have been going there for years. Best fish and chips in durham.
Quick service, excellent quality.
Best fish and chips in Ajax. Consistently good
We picked this restaurant based in the Google reviews and the reviews were right. The fish and chips were great, best I have had in years and the coleslaw was fabulous. We will be back.
Definitely going back!
enjoyed their food many times since moving to Ajax a year ago, our favorite place for fish and chips, our grand kids love the chicken tenders
Best fish and chips in Ajax!
Good for the price.
Always so good, so clean and the staff wonderful!
Super affordable, and the fish is legit. This is the place to take your dad to catch up. Good crispy batter, a variety of fish, good chips, and a nice selection of other sea food. Honestly, if youre jonsing and need some classic fish and chips, this is a great place to choose.
Fish is a good size some times need more fries with order but only place I would go to
I was extremely disappointed with the food. The fish was tough and the fries under cooked.
Simply put, it s the best in the area. The halibut was very fresh, coleslaw was irresistible, and the chips are phenomenal.
This is a great hidden gem! Really Really Good :)
Friendly family owned restaurant. Can ask for less batter on the fish (which I prefer), and they are happy to accommodate.
Always great
Small place but tasty fish
Very good fish could be a little bigger with more batter on it
very nice fih and chips very happy
Best fish and chips in Durham Region!
As a Brit, Im always looking for British style fish and chips. I tried to go to the Balmoral one evening but it was closed, so I forgot all about it.This weekend I tried again and was glad that I did. There was no one in there, which made me wonder if the place was any good. The restaurant wasnt very inviting from the exterior or within with wobbly tables, out dated decor and uncomfortable chairs The experience was altogether bit odd. A young child who most likely wasnt old enough to be working bought us menus and took our drinks order, Im guessing she was the daughter of the owners. Then a woman, who appeared to be part of a husband/wife team came to take our order. The child made a mistake with our drinks order and there was subsequently some shouting at her in an Asian language. What appeared to be the husband who was manning the kitchen, prepared our food. The drinks arrived and I was pleased that my tea bag had been put in the pot when the hot water was poured instead of leaving on the side for me to do it. The menu selection was a bit odd - if you picked the meal your choice of side was coleslaw, mushy peas and beets??, it also came with Scottish bread. A generous 2 slices of white bread, though slightly stale. The butter was too hard to spread, even by the time wed eaten our meal it was still too firm. There were choices of fish; cod, halibut, haddock, with some very good specials on grouper and a mysterious white fish, but I went with the cod. I believe the meal was around $15. When it arrived it was hot. There was one good size piece of cod and a medium sized serving of chips. There wasnt any option for two pieces as with other restaurants, but I always find two pieces is too much. The chips were excellent. The fish was well cooked, flaky and moist. The batter was light and crispy. The tartare sauce unfortunately was in small fiddly packets, not the creamy home made kind and there wasnt any lemon served with the fish, but all in all, the food was good and priced reasonably. The cod and chips without the extras was around $11 as I recall. All in all it was an enjoyable meal, though the restaurant has no ambience and I wasnt partial to the loud discussions coming from the kitchen between the husband and wife. Its always struck me as rude to use a foreign language in the workplace and many corporations have policies on this very thing, but I suppose you cant have everything and a decent meal for a decent price is what I was hoping for and received. I will probably go back to try their steak and kidney pie at some point.
Excellent portions and quick service
Went here to grab a quick takeout. I didnt want a greasy fish and chip dinner, so ordered two steak and kidney pie meals. To my surprise, after defrosting the frozen pies, the owner put them in the deep fryer. I was pretty taken back - when we got them home to eat them, filling in the pie wasnt very good and the pastry was incredibly greasy and unpleasant. This was not good food.
English style fish and chips
Fantastic fish and chips .
Best fish and chips in Ajax! Very friendly staff. My family has been going there for years.
Best fish and chips in Durham. Excellent customer service as well. When I walk in they remember what I want every time.
Simple good food. Haddock with fries was nicely done. Not too much batter, just right. Newcastle beer went nicely with the meal.
Best Fish and chip in town. excellent food taste, high quality. 5 stars
The best fish and chips ever! Light crust, on the fish. Hand cut French fries. Have been coming here for the past ten years. New owner is very nice as well as the staffs, its like you are eating with family!
Great food
Ordered the platter with fish, chips, shrimp, and scallops. Good price, delicious food, best fish and chips Ive had outside a pub in years, and Ive tried almost every fish and chips place in the area. Definitely good portion size, food was still hot when I got it thanks to the care with which it was packages. You can taste that they use good, clean oil to fry with, the fish tastes fresh and it nice and thick, the scallops and shrimp were also a really good size. Cant say enough good things about this place!
Great quality
Great fish and chips. Had the haddock. Batter was light. Fries were hand cut and fried to perfection. The servings were more than we expected. Great prices. Owned by a very sweet family. A must try if in Ajax :)
Everytime Ive come here, the experience has been warm, friendly and consistent. Food is top notch as well.
Great Halibut fish and chips best in Ajax
Large pieces of halibut, very tasty
Always good food. Be going for 15yrs every Good Friday
Fish is lightly battered and tastes good. Scallops are amazing. Not overly priced either.
Average tast.. Nice staff... Reasonable price.
The fish and chips are great.
Had fish and chips here and were not only surprised about the unbeatable prices but also about the authentic taste, the pleasant atmosphere and the super friendly staff. 10/10
Have been eating here for years. The owners change but the quality of the fish and chips remains the same-Excellent!!
Fresh cut fries good fish always good
The best fish and chips Ive ever had. The fish is always fresh and the chips cooked just right! This restaurant is clean and cozy. The owners are so kind and the service friendly.
Excellent Fish & Chips (and other menu items) cooked and served by Mary and her husband (who are always very welcoming) at Balmoral Fish & Chips. Additional staff (Emily) also very nice. My father used to go 3 times a week (sometimes with my mother) for 8 years until recently deceased. He considered it disrespectful to go anywhere else and sang the praises of Balmoral Fish & Chips to everyone he knew. My spouse and I went with him on numerous occasions (and still go ourselves) and were pleased every single time. If you are looking for a very nice location for Fish & Chips, look no further than Balmoral Fish & Chips. You will not be disappointed.
Absolutely excellent food everything was fresh and the owner is super nice will definitely be going back
Glad someone told me about this place. I find good fish and chip are hard to find but this place does a really great job. Everything is fresh. I always order the halibut and chips and its always delicious. The gravy is sooooo good. The restaurant is clean and the service is always friendly.
Husband and wife owned. Fabulous couple making amazing fish and chips. Im English born and need and I love my fish and chips! By far the best in Ajax!
Most authentic fish and chips in Ajax in my opinion
This family run business is beyond expectations! All British people will enjoy and recognize the superb offerings of good Ole home style fish and chips, as well as their British mushy peas! There is no where else that serves such wonderful fish! Yum yum. The owners are lovely, and they remember you and what you like to order. Anyone new to Ajax or anywhere in Durham would be doing their selves a disservice by not checking out this well known and award winning diner. Enjoy folks, as I know you will. Marilyn and Steve from Ajax. Thank you Balmoral.
3 years ago we retired back to the UK and of course we went out for a fish supper. What a disappointment.....and over the next 2 years we tried several establishments and none could come close to The Balmoral. As fate would have it we returned to Canada and to the best fish and chip shop ever!!! You must try it - great food and friendly service and guarantee you will go back again and again.
ABSOLUTELY the best in Ontario! I crave Balmorals Fish and Chips if I havent visited within a week or two. Recommended as the closest to the British with a nice piece of white Halibut and plateful of lovely chips. Side dishes of gravy, mushy peas and coleslaw complete a really scrumptious meal. Cant say how much I enjoy every morsel - and you will too!
The best Halibut and chips by far. Have eaten here @100 times and never had a bad experience
Good food at a great price with good service? What more could you want?
I have been going to Balmoral for as long as I can remember and I can honestly say it is the best fish & chip place in all of Durham.
Excellent fish and chips. Always friendly service.
Haddock was tasty and the batter was light and crispy. The service was friendly but a bit slow. Decor is needs a bit of an update.
The best fish and chips I have ever had. Hands down. I have tried many places, no one holds a candle to the fish and chips here. The shrimp coating is so light and crispy. The staff is super nice and prices are nice. Will always come back.
Very friendly owners, best fish and chips and shrimp.
Great Fish and chips. Haddock is my choice but all is good. Family run. Reasonable prices and great service. I returned often and will again. A good cup of tea as well.
Been going here for years and have to say they are the best fish and chips in the Region. Mary, the owner is a delightful person and makes everyone feel like family. Number one recommendation.
You cant buy better fish and chips than at Balmoral Fish and Chips. Their fish comes with just the right amount of batter and their fries are fresh, not frozen. Service is very attentive to their customers.
Fantastic fries! Fantastic fish! Wonderful service! Best fish and chips place in Durham!
The best tasting fish and chips in Ajax. I go twice a week with my dad and we never have any issues with the food or the service. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The Balmoral Fish and Chips has the feel of an authentic fish-and-chip shop or chippy in the U.K. A pot of tea, an order of flaky, battered fish served on a bed of chips or French fries with a side of mushy peas is the perfect meal at any time of the day. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly and the service is excellent.
Great Fish and Chips!
Ive got my fish and chips at this location for about 12 years. Best fish and chips by far.
Balmoral serves the best fish and chips Ive had! Our kids love eating there too, its one of their favourite restaurants. The shrimp is very good too, and the service is wonderful. I highly recommend this place!
Have been an extremely happy customer of Balmoral Fish and Chips since they opened. Mary is always very cheerful and happy greets all customers. Her husband is the KING of Fish and Chip fryers. Always order the Halibut and find the portions excellent and the taste is non greasy and sweet and flaky. Occasionally order scallops and or shrimp and they are just as good. My kids also love the food from Balmoral. We have tried other spots in and around Ajax / Pickering and no body holds a candle to Balmoral,
The best fish n chips to be found around GTA. We are absolutely addicted and wanting to go back for more every week! Everything tastes so fresh and well prepared.
Family run and fairly basic settings. However love the fish and esp the batter, very light, almost like a tempura. Real fish and chips with mushy peas, even with Asian owners who incidentally are very friendly. My British in-laws are there weekly .
Would love to have tried them closed Sunday!
Scottish themed, hence the name, however the owners are definitely Asian! The food was good, bit slow to cook and not particularly busy but it tasted good. Chips were good. My only criticism is that the fish batter was too light. Would definitely go back again. Cod and chips was around $9 with tax
disappointed...just went there tonight. we ordered halibut and chips and side order of scallops. fish batter was very flaky and kind of stale tasting, chips were just okay just kind of dry and basic, certainly not like british chips. hard to screw up scallops but they did, scallops were good size but kinda dry and again the batter was flaky and stale tasting...sorry, but doubt ill be back. so far the nicest fish ive had in durham was the place at westney and kingston, even though the owner there is rude. dont know why so many other places have a hard time getting a basic dish like fish and chips right.
Beautiful halibut. Best I ever had! And Ive had alot
