You want real Jamaican Jerk chicken look no further! This was my first time today and definitely won’t be my last! Had to get seconds to go!
I will definitely go back! They had 3 vegetarian options for the day and at a Jamaican restaurant thats rare lol. I bought all 3 and tbh the soup is my favorite because it has a good consistency, AMAZING flavour and enough spice. The Ital stew is second to the soup and still had sooo much flavour. The only reason the chick peas is my least favorite is because I just have it often but it tastes great too lol You must visit this place!!
Good food, Good service. One of my new favorite places. Everything I’ve tried so far were satisfying. My daughter and I really liked the fish with rice and peas. I wish they had plantain to go with it. Yum!!
Every time I come here the food is a hit, never disappoints. Everything from the oxtail, fried chicken, jerk chicken even breakfast is amazing! Highly recommend. Best Jamaican food in the city!
First time visit, and a bit disappointed. This place was pointed out to me by someone, a week earlier. On this particular day, I was in the area, and hungry, so I thought I would grab a bite and have it in the car. I ordered a medium sized soup with kidney beans and oxtail. When I opened it to eat, I couldn’t. It was cold. Soups should be served hot, but here the soups are laid out in containers, on the counter. When ordered, a container of cold soup that was sitting on the counter, is handed to you. I had to drive some 30 minutes away to heat it up. Moreso, I expected some provisions in the soup, but there was none. Nada! I got a spoonful of meat, 2 small loonie-sized dumplings, lots of kidney beans, and a whole lot of bones. That was it! For $10.00. Not exactly worth the price, nor what I expected. I cannot speak for the other dishes, as I’ve not tried them, but mine was basically basic. Nothing outstanding or extraordinary. Also, menu items could be posted more visibly and clearly, with prices listed. The menu was hand scribbled on a small piece of paper and affixed to the plexiglass, with no prices included. Therefore, one has no way of knowing what anything cost. The female Server appeared pleasant, but the place lacks appeal and needs updating. Hopefully, this is taken as constructive feedback, and not as trying to undermine the business.
My colleagues and I got the jerk chicken meals. Chicken and rice Were very moist and flavorful. Nice amount of spice as well. Side salad was very basic though. Just some lettuce with a single slice of tomato and cucumber. Also, I asked for oxtail gravy and I didn’t have any in my meal. I may, or may not come back whenever I’m in the area.
It's a very nice takeout place. We got 3 dishes to share, goat, oxtail and jerk chicken. All 3 were good, goat was my favorite. Portions were decent, the "small". would probably be enough as lunch for most people. Recommended!
My husband and I were in the area and were looking for Caribbean or Jamaican food, we were craving it... so we found this spot on Google maps and came to try it out. We were NOT dissapointed. Actually, the food here is incredible. This is a gem! The cashier was so friendly, she greeted us so kindly and actually had a nice small talk while waiting for the food. My husband ordered a large jerk chicken plate and I ordered a small stew chicken. Both were fall off the bone, well seasoned, fresh, and paired with a nice salad on the side. The chicken & gravy do have a nice kick to it, definitely out scotch bonnet to simmer in the pot, but its not over hot. If were here again, we will definitely pass by again to try the other dishes. 100% recommend coming for a bite!
Just bought the jerk and stew chicken combo with rice and peas,a side of stewed cabbage and Bokchoy. Absolutely DELICIOUS! Friendly hostess as well.
One of the best oxtail and curry goat dishes in Durham. Well seasoned with the right spice levels.
Great food and even better people!
The fry chicken is really good and Ill will be going there from now on...you can tell the food is fresh meaning it was made the same day and you can tell if u eat out alot...
Went to Myrtles today and the business wasnt open as it was stated on Google. I dint even get the opportunity to try their food. There was a worker inside the restaurant and kept waving hand gestures saying they werent open. So I wasted gas money to get food from them before work and they werent open. I say dont tust their business hours you may be disappointed.
Love this place. Yummy food, great customer service.
Better then jamcian stamp
Subject: Re: Concerns About Food Safety Its absolutely disgusting that the workers at the takeout restaurant aren t wearing gloves while handling food. The fact that they re using their bare hands to cut chicken and then putting it directly into containers is beyond unacceptable. It s even worse that they re touching their phones and doors without any regard for hygiene. This is a serious health risk, and I m appalled that the owner allows this to happen. I won t be returning until I see significant changes in their food handling practices.
Nah man . This is it .this is the one. Four of us went in to try yesterday. A Jamaican, Dominican and two Mexicans. We all got stew chicken and we crushed it one time. Even the Mexicans chewed up the bones lol big up yourself!!! We ll be back for the more on the menu.
Why Why the food on Midland Ave doesnt taste the same same anymore? Atmosphere : 3/5
Service at its best
One of the best oxtail meals I ve had
Love their food
This place is amazing. Underrated for the quality of food and prices that they have. My favourite plate at this spot is their curry goat!. The service is 10/10. The ladies at the front are very nice and welcoming. I ve had catered from them in the past and the experience, quality of food, service and customer service was 10/10. Would totally recommend!
The best Jamaican restaurant in Ajax!
Food is good love it but too much pepper in food especially soup had soup last weekend the oxtail peas soup it was too much pepper what about children that want to eat it etc other than that it s good please cut back on the Pepper I will be coming again this weekend Friday or Saturday March 1x 2nd I m expecting less pepper in the soup and the foods pepper is good but only to an extent what about persons that don t love spice versus persons that do you can only tolerate so much spice please cut back on the pepper this is one the best Jamaican restaurants in Ajax
The vibe here is authentic and fun. Gary was hilarious and reminded me of home! Food was electric! Will be back. Recommended dishes
Amazing! Best in Durham
Really enjoyed the Jerk Chicken Parking: 10+ Food : 4/5 |
If youre a fan of Jamaican food and or craving an ol school home cooked Jamaican meal this is the place to be. Food is great and the prices are decent.. Great staff as well..
i have been lookn for a good jamaican restaurant in ajax for a while now n ithink i found my go to spot i had the oxtail n rice n peas it was tasty 10/10 thanks ill be back sooon
This place makes amazing chicken and goat. Jerk chicken was cooked on charcoal which is a nice touch. Probably the best carribbean ive ever had in the GTA
Got the jerk chicken & stewed beef with rice & peas . Was not disappointed! Food tasted like I was actually in Jamaica , can taste the love in the food . And the gentleman that served me was very friendly and welcoming , when he cashed me out , I told him its hard to find good Jamaican food he laughed and said you will be back . Will definitely be back
Been there a couple of times and can say there food is pretty good compared to other spots in Durham. 4 stars because the last time I went there the owner was charging everyone in the store as well as myself a flat rate price of either $10 or $20 when clearly the menu board pricing was less even with taxes included. Havent been there since but when I do he owes me an extra fried dumpling.
Nadine and the entire myrtle team is truly amazing, the atmosphere is very welcoming. The food is truly unbelievable delicious and there is just no other restaurant that can compete with Myrtle they cook with love. They are simply the BEST. For thanksgiving we got the smoke jerk turkey, it was out of the world taste and melts in your mouth. We cater food for Xmas and Nadine went out her way to have the food ready on Xmas day because she wanted us to have fresh food. We were truly grateful for this level of service. Keep up the amazing service Myrtle Restaurant!
Had high hopes after reading the reviews. Flavour was average at best, and the portion of rice & beans significantly outweighed oxtail. Amounts of small bone shards in the goat was excessive.
Delicious food and prices are reasonable! Service was very friendly! Also the red pea soup was yummy, yummy yummy
Stew chicken and Jerk chicken is Extra oxtail gravy is a must
Hidden gem In Ajax. Highly recommend jerk chicken with extra oxtail gravy
My co-worker has now become a good friend who brings me Jamaican cuisine from this restaurant all the time and man oh man I love it! Excellent 10/10!!!! Vegetarian options: Soup is blessed!
Amazing food and customer service. Decent portion and authentic. First time trying and loved it.
Friendly atmosphere, the service and food is very nice.
Food is not fresh at all. Paid $ 22 for salmon which doesnt even look like salmon. Fish is too old.
foods always good here flavor, quality and quantity is perfect. Coming to myrtles kitchen is a MUST whenever i m in ajax
Nice spot for authentic Jamaican food. The food is always great. The location is not great for dining though, very small area.
Best food in Durham breakfast, lunch and dinner yum
Food is great, my favourites are the fried chicken and anyone of their soups!
This is my favourite Jamaican restaurant. All great food, and lots of Jamaican people stopping in for authentic, delicious, food.
Very disappointing. Placed an order for 1 oxtail and 3 stewed beef. After receiving the order it ends up being 4 oxtail. At first while contacting the restaurant they kept insisting that it is what we ordered. Later the owner said they did not have the stewed beef. So what actually happened is they took the order, realized they dont have the items and just replaced it with something else without contacting us. The argued that he cant afford to compensate for the order, then offer to compensate 1 and finally 2. We did not take any compensation because at the end of the day we just wanted the food we ordered. It would have been a much lesser disaster if the oxtail was at least good; it was dry, mostly bone and just unpleasant. Came here from a recommendation and will never purchase again.
Absolutely my favorite Jamaican Spot, their Jerk Chicken is 11/10. l Food
Great customer service.
It was pretty good. Chickens tough tho
Awesome little eatery with authentic Jamaican food. Good sized plates of delicious food for really good prices. Food is served right away so its a good spot for on the run. Only giving 4 stars on the atmosphere because there is no seating inside, but luckily there are picnic tables really close in front of Michaels.
From service to food, Myrtle s Kitchen leads.
My friend goes every Friday for their stew peas, i decided to try and I LOVED IT! Definitely going back
The server did NOT wash his hands before serving food after smoking his cigarette. The tall bald man with a small bump on his head. Regularly washing especially before handling customers food after smoking or touching money is a priority and protects everyone. Please remind all servers of this hygienic practise, cigarette odour/ particles leaves residue that easily transfers.
My son loves the stew pea. Its his favorite go to place.
Best Jamaican food I ve had in a while. Very friendly staff and good service. I will be back.
Pretty good. Quick service served hot. Not for sitting inside. Authentic Jamaican people inside.
Exceptional food and even better service. The food was delicious, we tried the curry goat and oxtail stew peas. The portion sizes and prices were great. Highly recommend this restaurant! Will definitely be a return customer.
Food tun up. Love the Ackee and Saltfish, Stew Chicken and Curry Goat. Cornmeal porridge is nice as well.
They re such lovely ladies, shout out to Nadine! Friendly and welcoming establishment and the food is a taste of Jamaica, as it should. Durham s finest, continued success!
Good good
Myrtles did an outstanding job catering for my family event. They were attentive to details and followed up with details. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend this establishment and would use their catering services again. Thank you.
The best
Had high hopes with all the great reviews and was excited to try the cuisine. Good things: The food is fresh and doesn t taste like it s been reheated (often an issue at similar restaurants). Portions are decent and filling. Price wasn t crazy. Unfortunately the taste is not Jamaican. Where is the flavor? It s quite plain for jerk or stew chicken. Even the rice lacked that zest that we were expecting. We were full enough after eating but there needed to be a little more flavor incorporated.
Just had Myrtles for breakfast slash lunch ordered the Ackee and Saltfish with provisions and it was one of the best Ive had in awhile, lots of flavors, large portions, fresh quality, good atmosphere and friendly service would definitely go back and recommend them to all ! got the large for a reasonable price and have so much Ill have to save a bit for later even! I just got back from vacation in Jamaica and this Ackee and saltfish is comparable or better than the one at the 5 star resort buffet I was at!
Wouldn t recommend.
Best oxtail is the GTA......
Best Jamaican food in the city!
Stew Chicken to die for ft a chef with a great sense of humor.
Amazing food
Wow!! Happened to stop at the gas station around the corner and saw this place. Googled it and read the reviews. Boy wasnt I lucky to not miss this place. People are right on point with their reviews about this place. Jerk chicken is worth ordering it from here. Too bad I live far away from this place or else I would be there atleast 3 times a week. Besides the softness, there is taste in every bite of chicken. Great food keep it up!!
Says closes at 8... dont believe the hype. Got there at 7:08... doors locked. What???
My favorite spot for dinner! Any time im in the East, Myrtles Kitchen is a must stop....
Mean food, good music, and friendly people! Love it!
Love their food. When im working in Ajax I eat there every day.
Great selection of Jamaican food and the prices were very reasonable. We ordered Curried Goat, Stew Chicken and Jerk Chicken and they were very tasty. Loved the music in the background at the shop. Highly reccomended and would definitely eat there again.
Had Manish water and curry goat, LOVED IT. I like the music that was playing and the service/conversation was great.
. I have to say, We enjoyed every single dish we ordered. Considering the quality & the quantity , the price is reasonable. Ideal for those who want to cater for bigger groups. Excellent food. Highly recommended. Nadine was great and always efficient, happy and polite. Her follow up, her kind and helpful nature made my decision a lot more easier. Sh even called to wish me on my birthday and made it even more special. Can t wait to return and wouldn t hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for catering to parties. We are so fortunate to have this place just a few minutes drive away from home. Love this place and will continue to visit.

The food was great and I enjoyed it
Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally stopped by on my lunch today. I had the large jerk chicken and I was beyond satisfied!!! Best jerk I ve had in all of Durham region. Chicken fell right off the bone and it was so juicy, not dried out like all the other jerk I ve tried at places around here! 10/10 recommend!!!

Good food
Great Jamaican soul food served, and friendly staff. Makes your food experience real enjoyable
Amazing food...the only fast food restaurant here in Ontario to get real Caribbean food that is fresh and worth your money ... trust me driving there is worth all the gas and stops made on the way Food is good you won t miss being home in the Caribbean
Flavour profile in ackee and saltfish is good however. Ithe portion size for the large is ridiculous. One spoonful is not enough....and for that reason you lost me as a customer.
Honestly this is one of the best mom and pops Jamaican spot Food is wicked and the Service is amazing Always friendly and polite.. Try it yourself
