I’ve been going to this location for over a year now however I’ve decided to add a review since they’ve newly renovated their establishment. Gone are the old remnants of a prior fish n’ chip joint that Umi Sushi took over and in its place is a beautifully designed and decorated restaurant. A decorated restaurant is only as good as its food and its service and here is where Umi Sushi excels. Their sushi is delicious and full of flavour, as well as a visual treat. I recommend trying the house special roll and I won’t say any more than that. Since the renovation, Umi has gone All-You-Can-Eat for a modest price and the quality does not suffer. You can also go all in All-You-Can-Drink for an extra cost but I wasn’t that daring. However, while the food and service are excellent, the dining experience is not as immersive due to the bright lighting and the weird selection of a Top 40 music radio station for ambiance. Something softer in both departments would go a long way. Also noted are the construction/cleaning supplies in the hallway leading to the bathroom. Perhaps these are leftover from the renovation but cleaning this up and putting your focus towards renovating the bathrooms would elevate this restaurant to the next level. Lastly the menus need a look over as I found a few spelling mistakes. Attention to detail is important if you’re making sushi. Good luck! I wish you the best and I will be back!

Their food is as delicious as always. And they have renovated the dining environment, so we are more willing to sit down and eat. Looking forward to their buffet.
**Review for Umi Sushi in Whitby** I was in the neighborhood and craving Japanese food, so I decided to try Umi Sushi. The setup of the restaurant caught by surprise —it was NOT inviting and BELOW my expectations. The food itself was disappointing. Most dishes were overwhelmingly sour, which overpowered the flavors I usually expect in Japanese cuisine. The portions were generous, but unfortunately, the taste didn’t live up to the size. I’d rate the food a 2/10. On a brighter note, the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the experience feel welcoming despite the food. Service deserves a solid 10/10. Overall, if you’re looking for good service and big portions, Umi Sushi might be worth a try, but I’d suggest they work on balancing the flavors to make the food more enjoyable.
I typically order from here and it’s usually great. However, my most recent order will likely be my last. I ordered a VEGETABLE dragon roll which I always do only special request I make is spicy mayo instead of white. I realized as I was eating it it tasted off but I wasn’t sure why I also noticed extra chewiness. Only to look at my next roll and discover there was meat mixed inside (I’m assuming fish/salmon) along with the tempura yam . I do not under any circumstances eat meat of any kind. My stomach is not use to consuming meat. This caused me to become sick and is also quite upsetting considering I choose not to eat meat for various reasons. Why was there meat hidden in my vegetable roll? This is not a mistake you can afford to make. I’m extremely upset about this. I should not have to inspect a vegetable only dish to ensure there isn’t meat in it. Smh
This place seemed like they were frustrated taking business for dine in. Made sitting very uncomfortable, no kindness. Looks like a family running their business and a child roaming around like it’s their home and didn’t want a customer to sit inside and eat. Unwelcoming experience made it horrible. Sushi didn’t even taste good. When asked for a cup of water they said they can’t give water that cup of tap water is $1!!! I have never seen somewhere this cheap over water. Will not come again and be treated like I did something wrong for dining in. I guess they only want take out business with the attitude they show. I didn’t say anything to them but will express my experience here. I did let them know about water which my daughter really wanted because she accidentally ate ginger and found spicy. Very unfortunate experience. Will not recommend to anyone I know. Also served in a paper plate to dine in when I’ve seen others be served in regular plates.
Stopped in for lunch on my way to Montreal from Toronto and I was a bit perplexed by how we were received. This was 2 days before Christmas which is usually a happy time. We walked in and the restaurant was empty. A lady sitting at the front was on the phone and didn’t acknowledge our presence. We stood there for 1 minute. I made eye contact with a cook who also did not say hello or smile! We decided to give them more time and went to the bathroom. Upon leaving the bathroom the lady who was on the phone was done and stood there nearly blocking our exit and said “May I help you” which I though was odd and I replied “ we’d like to have lunch” . There were at least 5 people working not a single customer. The attitude of the server was cold and borderline rude. We ordered our food, ate and left. The sushi rolls were good, we eat a lot of sushi, but the service was horrendous. I actually can’t believe we were treated that way in a business that provides hospitality. If I lived in Ajax I might order delivery from there but I would never have a sit down dining experience there again. Didn’t feel valued as customers.
Look this place is a hidden gem! Amazing sushi, tempura! Big portions for the cost. Tasty miso soup and salad too. Definitely going back. Don't expect fine dining this used to be a fish and chips place. The decor shows. Look past the plastic booths and blue tiled walls. Vegetarian options too by the way.

The uni sushi is affordable and delicious. I recommend for you to get the deep fried salmon roll with eel sauce. Best tasting sushi in my opinion. Vegetarian options: They have avocado rolls which are great
Absolute BEST sushi around! Ive been ordering on Uber eats for months now and this is the only sushi restaurant I ll order from this point because it s always perfect. They are always extremely accommodating and go above and beyond to ensure my meal is exactly what I asked for and more. They have a massive fan in me .

I ordered the Vegetarian Maki combo, the ginger orange dressing for the salad it came with was delicious and fresh! The miso soup was standard, sushi was pretty good. I found it to be more expensive, I paid around $18 for everything but I would eat here again.

This place is a hidden gem for sure, the food is so underrated. Their rolls are big, and their lunch special is more than worth the price. The fish is always so fresh and they have such a unique menu! Offering cheese on their torched sushi was a first for me I was pleasantly surprised. Worth the visit Update: time has passed and things have changed. sashimi combos always come with imitation crab and shrimp as opposed to better types of fish. The sushi & rolls have too much rice. Fish quality has gone down.
My partner and i love this place. By far the best sushi around! If you want to try other dishes they have like duck raman you wont be disappointed!!
I had a very disappointing and embarrassing experience at this establishment due to the unprofessional and racist behavior of the staff. When I entered, there was a lady working, and she didnt even acknowledge my presence. She didnt greet me or take my order. The first thing she said, without even listening to me, was, WE ARE NOT HIRING. I can only assume this was because I was carrying a backpack, and she thought I was there looking for a job. Her assumption felt not only unprofessional but also racist. They werent busy, yet they couldnt even take the time to listen to a customer. I didnt end up getting any food there, and I would never recommend this unprofessional place to anyone.

Called in to order for pick up. Received the wrong items and then when I called the girl gives me attitude instead saying I ordered the wrong items and she has a recording to prove it. I went back in person to get a refund for the untouched food and she refused and kept saying that I ordered wrong but won t show me the recording. They said it s our first mistake so she will just give me my correct order . Upon getting my order I asked for chopsticks and she said I already gave you chopsticks first time and throws the chopsticks on the counter. Worst customer service and expereince.
This is a very nice quiet spot for sushi with reasonable prices. Went in for dinner and they werent too busy on a Friday evening. Service was fast and friendly. Everything tasted fresh and tasty. Would recommend the shrimp tempura, teriyaki bento box and a roll combo. I would definitely recommend you visit this spot for your sushi cravings!
Decent place for sushi
The food is amazing! Fresh, delicious and popping flavours! The prices are good . The atmosphere isnt great. It was clearly an old Halibut House restaurant and they didnt bother to update it to a Japanese restaurant. Food
This place offers great tasting sushi in Ajax, however I would only recommend them for takeout. If youre planning on dining in and want a good experience, its probably best to look elsewhere. There are many options on the menu and prices are both fair and affordable for what you receive. I also had the chicken fried rice, but I would not recommend it. A good place for takeout sushi. Vegetarian options: There are several vegetarian sushi options. Parking: This is in a large strip mall, plenty of parking. There are also multiple banks in the plaza, if you wanted to take out some cash for your sushi!

10/10 food quality, seriously fast service while maintaining both quantity and quality, rlly nice staff. Interior is a give or take, but overall highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I have ordered from here for take-out and eaten in there a few times now. A great price for the sushi which is some of the best sushi Ive had locally in a LOOOOONG time. Ive discovered the Hawaii Roll is easily my favourite dish here and I strongly advise anyone to try it.

I ordered from here for the first time and I was very satisfied. I ordered the takoyaki and spicy crab roll. The takoyaki was delicious and the sushi pcs were big!

This has become my go-to place to have sushi delivered in Ajax. While other places including chains are a bit cheaper, the quality and flavour from Umi is well worth the price. Their ingredients are consistently fresh, even when on sale. I absolutely love the PT 11 Party Tray, great variety of rolls. You don t get a lot for the price, but it s good.

Didnt think much of this place in a strip mall, but boy, was it worth it. Catered to allergies and even had kid friendly plates and chopsticks. The food came out quick and was delicious.
We took a vegetarian party tray and it was very nice... the quantity and quality both are too the point... we changed 2 options and paid a bit extra but worth it... best was spicy yam avo...
This place is AMAZING!!! I have tried lots here and have ZERO complaints. I first found this place on Uber eats and will not have any other sushi from this area ever again because of this place. Don t judge the look of the restaurant based on what you think their food will look like because wow is all I can say about this food. There s salmon sushi pizza is out of this world as well as their green dragon rules. 10 out of 10 recommend this place.
This is honestly the best food I ve ever eaten. I had the dynamite roll and the pork belly Raman. I ve never tasted fresher sushi and tastier broth. This place is 100% an amazing restaurant. We will be coming back at least once a month
This place is a hidden gem. I can be picky with sushi but the sushi here was delightful. The rice was the right texture and tasted freshly made, It is some of the best sushi Ive had in a long time. The pork belly was to die for! I 100% recommend
The lady who served was lovely but the food was rather disappointing. Sushi was lacking in taste and way to big. Japanese fries were very disappointing.

Fantastic fried rice and great location. Feeling pretty spoiled for choice now that these folks are open and doing so well! They pay close attention to the notes and spiced the meal up quite nicely. Price, quality and portion size are absolutely aces here. Quite comprehensive menu as well, really looking forward to working my way through the rest of it. Awesome sushi spot close to home around here! Delivery orders are served effectively and efficiently through uber eats which is what I used for my first order.
I enjoyed the veg Maki set very much and was very delicious and beautifully presented. Although the rice was too soft for my liking, this has been the only place Ive had seasoned sushi rice with the same price point offering. A true rarity for me! The salad dressing was delicious and quantity given was too much, relative to the salad amount. A little was enough for me and I was sad to dispose the rest down the sink. A small, half filled container would have been enough. Would have again, hopefully not too much moisture in the rice next time!

The best place for sushi/sashimi in the area! My favorite rolls are - Ajax and Snow Dragon rolls. But I am ready to try the rest. Great combo options for families or parties as well.

Tasted nice and fresh, nothing fishy and packaged well. Ordered the Dynamite roll aswell as The house special roll which I ordered on accident but it still slapped . Kinda wish they gave more wasabi and ginger tho. Took mine to go, they have indoor seating but it s quite old school.

My wife and I have ordered from here a couple times before in the last few months without issue. However after ordering last night, we both had a sleepless night with food poisoning - and it was the only meal we had that was the same yesterday. We are fairly certain it was the spicy tuna that we shared. Not ideal on a Sunday when we have a 20 month old to care for. We will not be dining here again.
Ordered the Veggie Dragon roll. Very fresh, good rice. Also had the Pineapple Chicken appetizer, which was a generous size, hot and fresh. Would go there again.

Tried this spot over the weekend, and was so good I went back the next day for their lunch special. Miso soup is hot and flavourful. Unlike other bigger AYCE Japanese places in Ajax and Pickering (I think we all know which restaurant this is)...who dont care about their quality and food - Umi Sushi is a refreshing find in Durham for rolls and fish.

Friendly staff, and prompt service. The Maki rolls and hand rolls were served on eco friendly disposable dishes, and the wasabi, ginger and soy sauce were served in disposable containers as well. The restaurant appeared clean and well maintained.
WOW WOW WOW! I cannot stress enough how amazing our experience was here! We came in 10 mins before last call for dine in and even though they typically only offer takeout by that point, the staff was happy to accomodate us since wed already made the trip there. We tried their spicy salmon maki roll, the red dragon special, the Hawaiian, the Ajax, takoyaki and salmon sashimi - everything was so good!! The Ajax roll was absolutely to die for and everything was freshly made but quickly served. We also saw some customers arrive 15 mins after they had closed (we were still finishing our meal at this point) and even though the restaurant had started cleaning up and closing the kitchen, they offered them some options for takeout. It is so rare to see such amazing customer service these days as any other person would have bluntly said no in this position. Try this place, for such affordable prices you certainly wont be disappointed!
They did not ask us if we were going eat there or not. They just served us the food wrapped to to. Probably most people order to take out as the place is not very nice, but it looked clean and ok. The food was good.
I ordered from this place off Uber Eats. Ive got to say, it was absolutely disgusting. Spent over $80 on bento boxes. The tempura was tasteless, no sauce was included. The beef was old, stale and had no sauce either. A family member was sick after eating the California rolls. The portion was not big enough for 3 year old. What do these people think? Charging so much for absolute garbage and getting away with it. Of course, I dont expect authentic Japanese cuisine or anything close to it, but there has to be value and standards. These people run a lousy business and charge an arm and a leg for prison food. Shameful.
Great quality sashimi and sushi. I ordered through SkipTheDishes during a busy lunch hour and it arrived quickly and tasted absolutely fantastic.

Updating my review. First couple of times I ordered from here it was great. However the last couple of times the rolls barely had any fish and were mostly filled with cheap tempura. Fish was around 15% of the roll which is disappointing and overall I find it is overpriced for what you get.
I ordered 3 items online for pick up (cheese mussels, tamago egg, spicy scallop roll) and only got the mussels and scallop roll. I m super disappointed in this behaviour because this is not the first time it happens to me. If you want loyal customers to keep coming back to your business I believe you have to be an honest business because we we pay our hard earned money on you. Because it s not the first time this happens, I will not be coming back to this establishment. BE CAREFUL YALL!!!

Imagine I ask for no mayo on my roll. They put Mayo on it and dont have the decency to replace the order. They want me to pay again to get what I paid for.
Update. 2nd visit .. ordered Bento Boxes. So much food that we have leftovers tomorrow. Everything in the bento was absolutely amazing. I had Katsu Salmon and my boys had the pork. 1st visit The BEST sushi in Ajax. We did take out and the best Miso soup I have ever had. 58 pc maki tray was amazing. So fresh and the portions are larger than I am used to from other sushi places. An incredible menu that we will definitely be exploring in the very near future. Price is similar as other Sushi places but I think you actually get more for your money as the portions seem bigger. Wasabi also seemed to have more flavour to it as well.
Order takeout one time and they missed my rice. Call them back. They said next time will give me a extra bow of rice. Not too happy. My first dinner was missing rice so it didnt fill my stomach. Next dinner I have two bow of rice that I cant finish it.
Handsdown the best sushi place in Ajax and Pickering. My wife and I love having sushi at many locations and this one absolutely impressed us with the amazing flavors. Sushi was fresh and tasted great! This is our new favorite spot and will definitely be coming back again.

Ordered the Vegetarian Party Platter .. Absolutely beautiful presentation !! A lot of work definitely went into putting it together and it shows. The portions were great, loved how they had a variety of vegetarian maki choices in the platter ! Freshness, presentation, price and very friendly service.. easily 5 stars. Finally found a great sushi place in the east end that rivals Toronto. Delish :)
This place is incredible, one of my new favorite sushi restaurants in the area. Amazing, friendly service, and the sushi always tastes fresh. Their 3 roll lunch special is my usual go to and is priced pretty well for the portion you get. The atmosphere is unique too. I cant remember the time I walked into a 50s diner and had such amazing sushi, so they get bonus points for that.
