Delicious food, friendly staff, clean restaurant

Excellent food. Quiet atmosphere. Breaded mushrooms were excellent.

Sunday and Monday their Haddock and chips special for $9 plus tax is excellent price and good quality and very filling the rest of the week their fish and chips are a bit overpriced. The service is quick and efficient all in all a good place to eat. They also have a reasonable breakfast special but dont feel the need to post the hours for it. After the shut down prices have been raised and quality and quantity have gone downhill. Its now Oct 2024 and prices have gone crazy

I was there on June 6th for the buy one get one free deal. Before I start I d like to say I ve been there before and always had a good visit. The food was absolutely delicious!!!! But that s not where the problem was. I know what s it like to be a server. I m very busy days. I ve done it. Yes, it was busy when we got there. But we were able to sit down at a table to wait for them to clear it off. A man came over to clear the table and I said wow it s pretty busy. He turned to me and said in a very snarky way. Yes, and I m the newbie and it s my first shift. Not hello, how are you, my name is or anything. Took the dishes off the table and never wiped it down. I had to ask him to wipe it. He asked what I wanted to drink I said I d like a glass of ice water with lemon. Again, in a very snarky voice said you have to order an actual drink. Didn t explain why but I figured it was because of the BOGO sale and said ok I ll have a ginger ale. He brought back our drinks and I said I would still like the water with lemon. His response was quite you should ve told me that before I went back there So my friend and I sat back to wait for our dinner and started chit chatting. While we were waiting I watched the restaurant. The waiter was sweating profusely, kept using his shirt to wipe the sweat off his face over top of the customers. Was rude to everyone. In the mean time they had 5 more tables come in AFTER us. The food started to come out and they went to the first table that came in after us. More food came out and they went to the second table after us. I then said to the lady that was serving we were here before those two tables and they got their food before us. She said umm ok. Then the waiter said (again with attitude) well I put your order in. I said ok then why are those people getting served and not us. After that food came out and went to the third people after us. This continued on until all 5 tables were served and we didn t have our food yet. The waiter came out and said I m the newbie it was the kitchens fault. I started to say regardless of that and he walked away. We finally get our dinner and we never saw the waiter again. Not once did he say how is everything ? Would you like anything else ? It was like we didn t even exist. Then all of a sudden he slaps a bill on our table says let me know when your ready and walks away. As he walked by I said excuse me. We aren t even finished eating yet and you give us a bill and this bill isn t even ours anyway. He never said anything just walked away. We were going to order to dessert but didn t because he just away from us. This visit there really has me wondering if I want to go back or not. I didn t want to leave this review here. I wanted to speak to head office but of course there is no email address for them. Very very very disappointed

A good basic breakfast at a good price

Never eaten here before. Pre-ordered several days ago for Good Friday Fish n Chips. Absolute chaos. You know that episode in season 1 of The Bear where there were wayyyy more orders than could possibly be made in a timely fashion? It felt like that. Pre-ordered for a specific pickup time meant nothing, you were gonna get your pre-ordered dinners... eventually, way past the time you were supposed to pick it up. The mood in the lineup was ugly. The food was really good. Excellent fish n chips. But maybe dont order for Good Friday. They need to work on their system setup for the busiest Fish n Chips day of the entire year.

The staff is always extremely helpful and friendly, the food is always delicious, and the price is always great! I would 10/10 recommend eating here I ve been coming here for years and have not been disappointed once!

Sadly, we ordered on Good Friday online. I ordered and paid in full 3days prior to our allocation time and we were told upon arrival after waiting in line that they would not honour our online order even though it was placed and paid for in full on their site 3 days prior. We had 8 people waiting at home.

We tried this Fish & Chip restaurant on 02/23/2024 about 6:30 P.M. was greeted when entering by a friendly waitress/server. Was asked politely, if we were taking out or dining in, we told the lady we intended to dine in. The restaurant was fairly busy with patrons, we were asked immediately if we wanted something to drink. I ordered a soda, wife ordered a coffee, the accommodating waitress/server gave us some time to order. There was a Special on the Cod or Haddock fish & Chip dinners. Buy one meal-Get the next meal 50% off, so we each ordered the Haddock & Chips. The meal was ready briskly, it came to our table, piping hot. The Haddock was nicely coated with a light golden brown batter (not greasy) at all. The fries (chips) were cooked to perfection also, golden brown and hot. The table had all the necessary condiments, huge containers of ketchup, tartar sauce, with a vinegar tray (malt & white) with salt & pepper. The meals came with a small bowl of coleslaw (vinaigrette like) not mayo. The waitress/server was on her toes, serving other customers, but always asking us if we wanted beverage refills or how our meal was. We enjoyed our meal very much, and were huge servings (we were filled to the gills). Over all a very friendly atmosphere and enjoyable dining experience. Would definitely recommend this Fish & Chip restaurant, right on Wilson Street-Adjacent to Fortinos Grocery Store in Ancaster, Ontario. Parking: There is plenty of parking. It s next to a Subway shop in a small strip mall or can use the Fortinos lot if need be. Kid-friendliness: Plenty of room for children, seats with tables or booths. Wheelchair accessibility: I would assume so-Large automatic door.

#1 first time. Fish batter and fries were soaked soggy hell. #2 Second chance. Thought id try one more time. HORRIBLE We got the special and the fish was sliced so thin you couldnt taste it in the badder. Fries AGAIN were the consistency of wet cardboard. Call me stupid for giving a 3rd chance. Were going to try again and see if the owner takes customer reviews serious. Ill update and see if the badder and fries are still served soggy. Im seriously not a fussy person but to serve traditional fish and chips soggy isnt good. Update on 3rd try. The badder and fries were crispy as they should be

Mom and I love Halibut House Ancaster. Quiet and extremely friendly environment. Delicious food, no matter if it is fish or souvlaki! We always leave satisfied. Staff is so welcoming and make you want to come back all the time :) Thank you Halibut House!!!

Awesome food and service. My girlfriend and I visited here on a whim on a Tuesday night and were greeted by the most welcoming server named Nancy-May! She was very friendly and had great energy. We immediately felt like we were In good hands! We ordered one piece of haddock and chips and a gingerale and split it. It was so good! Super crispy and light batter, not too heavy and not too greasy (and I m very sensitive to that) the fries were pretty good too but the fish was perfect, really yummy. I imagine you can t go wrong with any of the types of fish. Great tarter sauce too! Super good. Thank you!

The staff is super helpful and friendly but the fish leaves a lot to be desired. The fish is sooo thin you can barely taste it. How they got a slice of fish that thin is beyond me. Take a pass on this one.

We have had great meals at this location before so tonight we decided to order three dinners. The fish was tough on all meals. The appearance was square, all three meals were to similar in size to be a freshly battered fish. The batter was flat and pale in appearance. The fries were good. Coleslaw is good. Will not go back, very disappointed.

We just had a great dinner here! The food quality was fantastic, generous pieces of fish with just the right amount of batter. The sweet potato fries were excellent and the chicken wings were some of the best weve had in a while. The restaurant was clean and well laid out and the staff were warm, helpful and overall exceptional. 10/10 would recommend!

0 stars. I send my apprentice to get me a 2 piece and chips and it cost me $48.50!?!?!? How does that work? They added on an extra $7 for big thing of gravy and coleslaw that I didn t want. Absolute joke of prices for mediocre food. You can go to any 5 star restaurant and get a whole meal for that price. Never going back

Karen working here kicked a family out because one of the member was vegetarian and wanted to have subway. Others ordered their fish meals but as soon as Karen saw it she lost control and said I cant allow you to have subway here so either stop eating or get out of the store. Shame on Halibut House for having such Karens as Staff member here. She try to do the same to another family with kids but guy told her to buzz of because they paid for their meals. You can train to serve but cant train humility and ethics.

Ordered 2 take out Haddock & chips, Monday special. Have ordered many times in the past and the quality of the Haddock has always been great. This time the fish was not good. It was so thin and not at all flaky as in the past. Will not likely order again. Disappointing!

The 3 of us tried 3 different fish, all were fresh and nicely cooked. The fries were great. The service was amazing. The young lady who served us was supper sweet and honest about all my questions! I definitely recommend this place. Kid-friendliness: my son loved the halibut and fries! He is a super picky little guy, so it was so nice not to have to beg him to eat!!!

Have in most cases enjoyed our halibut & chips at this location but our recent order disappointed my wife and I. The two halibuts we ordered were very small compared to past orders. Halibut house is pricey but was worth the portions they typically give.

We called to order food on Wednesday November 7th. We were about 10 minutes away. Got there used washroom and paid for our order. We ate in car. The fish looked soggy. Lifted up fish there was a layer of napkins between the fish and chips. The fish was good but the batter was soggy. The chips under the napkins were also soggy. The bottom layer was ok. I have eaten at Halibut House for 5-6 years. I have never had soggy anything. Also the coleslaw was terrible. Barely any sauce and cabbage and other stuff was very limp. I did inform the manager of all this. I got a thank you. I called again on Friday thinking it was just night manager. Still same guy. I didn t want to leave bad review but when owner/manager thinks it is alright to put napkins in your food then what else can you do? Just because some people like napkins in their food doesn t mean others do. Yes I did swear at him for the bad customer service. Who likes napkins in their food?

We dined in and I have to say how clean & tidy the dining area was. Met by very friendly staff. Our order came quickly. It was cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful. These days it seems to be hard to find good food and great service at a fair price, but HH has succeeded. We ll be back!

Just got the halibut special. The serving size of the fish is fantastic. We ordered four meals with the half-price special and coleslaw. They were all cooked perfectly. The lady working alone in the kitchen was super busy yet cook everything perfectly. Now that all the restaurants are closed we took it for takeout. Will be back for more

Ive read all the reviews, so we fiqured it would be good..My husband had the haddock & chips & I had the halibut & chips..I always order the halibut at any Fish & Chip restaurant..Well last night mine was terrible, it tasted very fishy. I know that when fish is fresh it is not supposed to taste like that.I have never had fishy tasting halibut.. We will not be going back..

I was so excited to try this place but unfortunately the servings were not what I expected. I ordered takeout and unfortunately got barely any eggs with my order or homefries. Half a cup of each probably? Maybe it was a mistake in the kitchen unsure was just disappointed.

Been to this place after a long time. No busy at all for Friday evening but people getting in and out for takeouta. Only person serving was polite and pleasant. Food did not take time and freshly cooked. We ordered Haddock and chips with Greek Salad. Will recommend this place for occasional fish & chips. Fish is not fish, potatoes are so-so...

About 12:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, my wife and sister-in-law went in for a 3 lunch take-out. 2 grilled halibut and 1 breaded haddock 1 with fries and 2 Caesar salads and a dessert. About $75 (!!) (Its been a while since Ive had fish and chips, so I dont know whats reasonable. That seems pricy for what we got.) I have never thought of describing fish as tough before, but that was the only word to describe it. It didnt have the consistency of fish and pieces had to be severed with a metal fork. There was certainly nothing flakey about it. It was edible and it likely had some nutrient value and I was hungry, so I ate it. My wife expressed the same opinions and regretted spending that amount on something so dismal. My S-I-L ate a bit of hers, bagged it up along with the fries (she made no comment about them) declared the lot to be inedible, agreed the fish was tough and went inside to find something else. That was my first and likely only experience with HHF&C, and likely the last. Maybe it was an off day. Definitely not a good one.

Being new to the area I stumbled across this fish and chips spot and was blown away not only by the food but more so the excellent service and attitude from the lovely woman who served me and ensured I had everything I needed throughout my entire meal. The restaurant was clean and social distancing guidelines were in full affect. I will definitely be returning!!

I had a very nice experience here , the woman serving breakfast (Nancy) had exceptional customer service ! She kept checking in to make sure everything was okay! The place is clean and they followed all the social distancing rules . The prices are great also . The fish chowder was really yummy , and the breakfast special was yummy ! Can t wait to try the fish and chips during lunch or dinner ! Will come back if I am in the Ancaster area again !

Im from BC and nothing beats fresh fish and chips right on the coast. But damn I was not expecting an Ontario fish and chips place to be so good. 100% would order again, inexpensive, incredible tasting fish. Me and my boyfriend are still talking about it. If you have a craving for fish and chips, look no further. I got the haddock fish and chips which was an insane amount of fish and fries. Very impressed.

My mother pre ordered our family order a head of time for this week for good Friday and was told it would be ready for pick up between 4pm and 5pm. My mother leaves to pick up the food. My mother arrives, waits an hour. Finds out they lost her order. Nearly, waits another 2+ hours for our food. Listen, I get that its Covid, lockdown, very busy, good Friday, and many other things. But be better. Be organized. Im sorry this is unacceptable. I get mistakes happen. But 3+ hours of waiting? Thats awful customer service. Be better... I will consider ordering from different local locations next time. Taking our business somewhere else from now on. Disappointing. Especially, because this places food is fantastic.

Best fish and chips I ve ever had!!!! First time having them on Good Friday!!! Yes extremely busy but definitely worth the wait!!! Their staff and manager kept their cool under pressure! On the busy day!! Extremely kind and courteous!! And even though the day was crazy and busy the quality of food was not compromised extremely big portions!!! Great job definitely going back for more!!

Could not rate lower! Takeout was disgustingly greasy and cold..when I tried to phone to complain, the call was dropped!! When I tried to complain on website comments-no answer...twice!...$42 for two halibut and fries- the only edible portion was the coleslaw!!!...Never have had worse!! I was warned by friends...I should have listened...Never again!!...I have eaten there pre-covid...no complaints then! I can accept mistakes- just dont take me for granted, and dismiss me..I tried to be respectful!!...Expect better customer service...especially in Ancaster....ooooh, was I ever wrong!!

Coming home from the casino last month, we stopped in here for dinner. Just one other table was occupied, making for comfortable and distanced seating. My wife got the halibut dinner, but I was so hungry, that I ordered the 2 piece haddock dinner. A serious error in judgement. The meals arrived, and I could NOT see the plate for the large volume of fries, and HUGE servings of fish. Now Im a big eater, but have to admit, the size of this 2 piece dinner is NOT for the faint of heart. Finishing dinner obviously took far longer than it should have, but I finally got it all down. Excellent fish and chips. Today, a month later, and that much smarter, were back, this time we both ordered the 1 piece haddock dinner. Same great service, and same great food. Fish, fries, and coleslaw were just superb. Even better is the fact that Sun & Mon, the haddock dinner is on sale. So if youre looking for a BIG, great tasting dinner, and service with a smile, Ancasters Halibut House is the place to be.

Really good place to go for fish and chips. They serve three types of fish(Halibut,Cod and Haddock) along with fried shrimp, scallops and clams. I had halibut and chips and the portion size was great for the price. The menu lists the Halibut at 5oz but the piece I got was clearly more that 5oz. This is not a fine dining seafood restaurant it is more of a diner.The place is quiet, but not small, and the wait staff is very friendly. They also do take out which I will definitely be trying in the future.

Great breakfast! Simply cant be beat at $3.95 with an egg, 2 pieces of toast, 2 sausages (or bacon or ham) and home fries. Beyond the price it is a well prepared and tasty meal. The fish and fries are great too. Especially the Sunday and Monday special of Haddock and fries plus coleslaw for $8. Thanks Kelly et al. Always a pleasure.

Be careful in this restaurant for take-out. Although they have social distancing marked, customers just walk right in and head to the back to order and pick up. Its all very confused and inefficient and not managed. Ordering on the phone ahead of time means nothing. The order is not ready and they want you to re-order. The batter is very greasy and they give enough fries for 3 people. Very expensive; the fish tasted nice though and was fresh.

This place is kinda mediocre. Not somewhere Id probably ever go again. Heres why. I went 2 times so far just to give it a fair shake. Once for breakfast and once for dinner. Just to see how the food compared. The place is nice and clean as to be expected since it opened up fairly recently, in respect to when I went there. Wait staff was attentive enough both times but never stood out as amazing. The breakfast was alright. Thats the best I can say. The toast was a bit burnt and the eggs a tad bit to runny. Sausage was cooked nicely though. The coffee was not the greatest however and need much sugar to be drinkable. Very bitter. The dinner was decent. I got the fish and chips. And they were alright. I have had better from places that dont have fish and chips as its namesake so take that for what its worth. Overall I couldnt say Id recommend this place. After the two times after it opened i havent been back, nor can I see myself every going back.

Worst customer service ever!!!! Nancy May has no customer service what so ever.

Placed an order online. No option to add a side of gravy. After I placed my order I called the store to inform them that I wanted to add gravy because there was no option for it on the website I was told that they wouldnt do it because they couldnt read the special instructions for the order from the website. Which also means that Im about to receive my gyro without lettuce. The person that I spoke to ( Nancy May) was extremely rude and disrespectful to me when speaking with her about adding the extras that the website wouldnt allow. I would give zero stars if that was an option. Never ordering from here again.

Sunday Breakfast. Affordable, great service, ok food (it was cheap), very clean establishment.. but the food did take a while to get to us (and the place wasnt very busy).

Excellent. Tasty, hot, and excellent portion sizes. Not all my kids like fish, but they all ate their kids meals from Halibut House. We did a telephone take out order and it was ready on time. Will order again.

Disappointing. I ordered the halibut fish and chip meal. It was not fantastic. It tasted like captain highliner fishsticks. There was no coleslaw with the meal and they don t even make their own tartar sauce. Fries were good and customer service was good.

Just tried the halibut and chips with a salad. The fish was amazing, light, crispy, flakey golden batter. Anyone who is unsure if they should go for the cheaper haddock or the halibut this is for you. 10/10 coming back next week.

Love everything about this place. Great prices 2 halibut dinners 2 pops and 2 desserts $55+tip. Fish size was good not batery but enough crunch fries cooked to perfection and not greasy at all. Sorry to hutches but i have a new go to. Great decor. Friendly smiling staff. Lots of free parking. Already have my next meal there planned.

Showed up at 8 for breakfast, place wasnt even open, no lights on, staff walked in the building at 803. This is so unprofessional I drove 20 minutes there for breakfast at 8 when they are supposed to be open and they werent. Clearly none of their food is fresh as they could not have time to prep fresh food for customers in time. Will never go here again.. not worth my time or my money.

Brilliant food, well cooked. The batter on the fish was done well and the chips are just like the ones in England. However, the price is a little steep, otherwise 5*!!

Great fish and chips best in my opinion in the Ancaster area. I know they are a chain so if you see one you wont be disappointed. There breakfast is pretty good too.

Fish was very good. Very nice light batter on the fish. The french fries were great when they first arrived but when the cooled down a little they became rock hard. No lemon was served with our fish and chips

My parents, nieces and I tried out the Ancaster location last night. I got the seafood platter. Overall, not bad. The food was cooked well and tasted good. The fish was good, flakey and a decent size to it. The batter wasnt too bready. The fries were okay, could do with more seasoning or something. Not terrible, but not great. If you go mainly for the fish, you probably wont need the fries.
