Welcome pub Pilgrim to the oldest free house in England. For Over 1000 years, this hostelry has been known throughout the land for giving shelter and hospitality to the wayfarer. Serving grandmother's British food. What a happy cosy place!
What can I say about this amazing location? We visited while filming a video for our YouTube channel on the Filming Locations of Hot Fuzz and couldn’t believe the welcome from the staff. We hadn’t intended on Staying for long but it was Steak Night so had to get in on the action. The staff were all amazing. Very friendly and on hand with answers to any of our many queries. The food was out of this world. Devilled Kidneys. Crackling and Apple Sauce. 50oz Côte De Boeuf. Fish and Chips. All were fantastic and cooked to perfection. Steeped in history with many rooms and nooks dating back to 1086, this place has to be visited to believed. We came for the filming location, but stayed for the atmosphere and welcome. The Royal Standard is a good 2 hours from our home but we intend on coming back very soon. Probably on a Steak Night. Thank you to everyone who turned our 5 minute visit into a very memorable 2 hour nostalgic trip into the past. See you again soon. M&L
Wonderful old pub. Food was fabulous they catered well for my vegetarian, nut free diet. From the bar staff, food servers to waiters they were all friendly and accommodating. Service with a smile. The building is very old and full of history. Lovely warm log fire inside even though it was warm outdoors, in was cool and inviting inside.
No question that this is a unique experience and absolutely worth the drive. It is a true pub experience, so fish & chips are excellent but the bouillabaisse was somewhat underwhelming. On the other hand, the people are friendly and funny, the atmosphere is unique. A must-see if you’re anywhere within a few miles.
The Royal Standard of England pub is one of the oldest pubs in the country, and it never fails to impress. I’ve visited a few times and had great experiences in different seasons. On a bright sunny day, I enjoyed sitting outside and soaking up the sunshine, making the most of the pub’s lovely outdoor area. During a chilly winter night, the cozy interior was the perfect retreat, offering warmth and comfort with its inviting atmosphere. The interior reflects its storied past with period features. The Royal Standard of England consistently delivers a memorable experience with its rich history and charm.
It has been taken over since my last visit many years ago and has greatly improved. The 900 year old building is always a talking point and that is still impressive. Both the food and service were on point. With very tasty hearty dishes. A word of warning, don't order starters and mains if you've eaten in the last month. This is big fayre. Enjoy.
Four for lunch Warm welcome from Phil behind the bar Shown to a lovely table set in an alcove and with upholstered seats Wide choice of food Prawn and avocado, an artistic and tasty starter For a main I chose sausage and mash. At £20 it looked pricy BUT when it arrived - WOW - best ever. I was delicious. The sausages were huge and packed full of flavour. Perfectly cooked and presented on a bed of mash with lashings of gravy. Oh my . . a new benchmark has been set Others chose Lamb King Henry and Chicken pie. Both looked great and were enjoyed. Should have asked for extra gravy with the pie Kateryna, our server, was excellent Ambiance, of course, was like a film set. Hanging tapestries and appropriate memorabilia decorating old beams. All good
Nestled in the heart of the UK lies the Royal Standing Pub, a historical marvel and the oldest pub in the country. Stepping foot into this establishment is like stepping back in time, with its charming atmosphere and rich heritage that captivates visitors from near and far. During my recent visit to the Royal Standing Pub for a somber occasion—a funeral—I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and hospitality that enveloped me upon arrival. The owner, a fascinating individual with a wealth of stories to share, added a personal touch to my experience and made me feel welcome in his establishment. Despite the melancholic reason for my visit, the Royal Standing Pub provided a comforting refuge with its cozy interior and inviting ambiance. The dimly lit space exuded a sense of history, with antique furnishings and quaint decor that spoke volumes about its long and storied past. One aspect of the Royal Standing Pub that truly stood out was the delightful cuisine it offered. The menu boasted a variety of traditional British dishes, each prepared with care and attention to detail. From hearty pies to classic roasts, every bite was a testament to the pub's commitment to quality and flavor. In the midst of sorrow, the delicious food served at the Royal Standing Pub provided a much-needed respite, offering a moment of solace and comfort during a difficult time. The combination of good company, delectable food, and a unique ambiance made my visit to the pub a memorable one that I will not soon forget. In conclusion, the Royal Standing Pub is a timeless gem that exudes character, charm, and a sense of history unlike any other. Whether you visit for a joyous occasion or a more solemn affair, this venerable establishment is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who pass through its doors. I highly recommend a visit to the Royal Standing Pub for a taste of history, hospitality, and culinary delights that are second to none.
Food were amazing but was told the portion is smaller than last year. We ordered two sets of food unfortunately one set was forgotten and got delivered a lot later. Fish was cooked to perfection. Loved the atmosphere around as it's been 900yrs old. Will definitely go back again!
Hi Me and my friends had a Christmas dinner party organised here December 2024. The food was of a very very poor standard. I ordered turkey for my mains. I received 2 small carrots, 2 small slices of turkey, 2 slices of stuffing and 5 huge Brussels sprouts. Brussel sprouts were well under cooked. This would have been an acceptable Christmas dinner for the homeless in a shelter. But not at a 900 year old famous pub. We were charged £55 each. I definitely do not recommend this place to eat food at. For drinks it s fine. I was very very unhappy with the Christmas party we had at This place all because of the poor quantity of food. Such ashame I will not be returning to the pub in the future.
Having attended this venue with my family and friends for a Christmas Dinner 2024 l will say the food we were served was abysmal. It was extremely substandard and definitely overpriced at £45 per person for the meal. Having paid an eye-watering amount of just under £1200 for 26 people it was undoubtedly not value for money. An offer of a free of charge three course meal in January was offered as a form of recompense. However it was retracted and a derisory offer a £300 refund of the bill was offered in its place. There could possibly be a number of reasons why we had to endure such a disappointing Christmas meal. Nevertheless you only get one chance to make a first impression and I will not be returning with my family and friends.
Food was like something out of Iceland s frozen section. Really not happy with food I received for the price. I expected so much more than what was offered to me. I would highly recommend people to go carvery instead!! Trust me you will get much more value for your buck than what this place gave. Really hoping the establishment can rectify this and make it right. Out of being cordial and not wanting to cause a scene I paid for my meal. But if I was on my own or with just my family I would have refused to pay. Spent over £100+ and worst purchase this year by far
WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD!!! We had a Christmas dinner booked for 26 people on Saturday 14th December 2024. This was probably the worst roast dinner that I have ever had in my 47 year life. 2 courses set Christmas menu at £45 + drinks + service charge, what would you expect for that price? We all got 2 small slices of turkey, a couple of small carrots, a slice of stuffing that was like it came out of the freezer from Iceland, 3 small roast potatoes, cold gravy and half a dozen sprouts that we like golf balls soaked in horseradish that made my eyes water! Portion size was smaller than a kids meal and condiments arrived 10mins after the food. We all paid up at the end of the night and the organiser contacted the establishment to pass on our feedback on the extremely poor quality of food. They told us there was a trainee chef working that night and initially apologised for the diabolical quality of food served. They then verbally offered for us to all come back for a free of charge 3 course meal in January and then retraced that offer and said they would give us a £300 refund from the £1200 bill - what a joke. For a 900 year old establishment it s a lovely venue but you would think that they have plenty of experience preparing good quality food but this is absolutely not the case. I would recommend only going there for a drink and soak up the atmosphere but I definitely not eat there unless you want to get ripped off with totally substandard food.
Recently they appear to have really upped their game on the food. Much better the last two times than previously experienced.
An amazing place, steeped in history. The staff were attentive and polite. Food arrived in a timely manner, hot and tasty. Would recommend The Royal Standard of England. Food : 5/5 |
Overpriced and underwhelming food I was yesterday with my husband in the booking, we specified that we wanted a table near the fireplace, but when we arrived we were given another table anyway we ordered Welsh lamb and cheeseburger, to be honest, the lamb was raw undone my husband ate only the potatoes we were very disappointed, and we went to eat somewhere else Very disappointed
Had a fabulous night! From when we first stepped through the door, it was so welcoming with candles, log fires and fairy lights The food was amazing, I had lamb which was so tender it fell off the fork. And the service we received from our server Rachel Molyneux was outstanding. Polite, informed and made our night special! Would absolutely recommend this period pub for a special occasion, can t wait to return!
Amazing atmospheric ancient pub! Vegetarian options: Not many Food : 5/5 |
First time visiting and enjoyed it. Food is homemade , recommend the steak and kidney pudding. Very interesting pub.
Great atmosphere Steeped in history Good service Food was equally as good Recommended dishes Sunday Roast Beef
Wonderful old pub with nooks and crannies. Sunday lunches were excellent and plentiful
I dont think there is anything comparable in Europe! Quite apart from the incredible 900-year-old winding half-timbered building, everything is just right: the completely overwhelming furnishings, the friendly service, the extremely delicious selection on the food and drink menu and of course the owner Matthew OKeeffe, who with his team welcomes every pilgrim welcomes you warmly and makes it special!
Very good steak tartare and lamb King Henry.
Truly a place not to be missed! So much character in the place, especially the building. I cant wait to go back again and again. You wont be disappointed. Vegetarian options: Sorry, but I didnt look for them.
Great place for hungry historians. Ask the barman with the top hat about the schooner seat.
Very good food, but very expensive and could have used more different veg. Perfect if you like meat and starch though. Cant fault the old building and service was very good, except we were unable to get tea as the machine was down. Sounded suss tbh. Vegetarian options: Very limited
Perfect as ever great food and service!
Wood fire, historical location, historical interior which transport you to the medieval times with its decorations, excellent food home made. Come in good company and you will not be disappointed. For a main you are looking at 18 pounds to 22 pound on average and 8 pounds for a desert served by great staff members. Perfect for a special occasion ! I cannot fault it. Give is a go! Totally recommend but ensure to book or you will be disappointed, especially in the winter. PS: My friend tried a steak cooked rare as she wanted which was delicious with a smoky flavour. I tried the Midsummer chicken pie which was a delight. Amazing!
Hands down, the best food Ive had in years! Service is top-notch, the atmosphere is amazing, and staff are very welcoming. 10/10!
The oldest pub in England did not disappoint. Food, service, atmosphere, and the wine list were all so incredibly amazing
We love the Royal Standard, one of the oldest pubs in England. Always great food, great service, and a wonderful setting. Very little else to say, amazing!
Always a favourite. Fantastic in every arena. Thank you for consistently supplying the family with wonderful memories and lashings of good food and alcohol! See you soon!
Great food great place great fun
A very lovely old building with great food and the staff were really friendly and helpful
Fish and chips for lunch - barely 1 bites worth of actual fish inside. Not great for £16.
Amazing place, we didnt book but was shown to the last table available which was on top of the open fire so too hot but it was our fault for not booking. Food was the best roast dinner I have had, didnt need the extra cauliflower cheese as the portion size was big enough. Very interesting place, full of history. We will return, but next time book.
Big rip off at todays dinner! 10% service charge = £17. £9 Desserts without service charge. Staff barely speak proper English so mix up in what you order. Charging mineral water bottle instead of bringing tap water because they dont understand. Sausages with mashed potatoes, very average quality sausages/food in general/small portions of how used to be. Good atmosphere but dirty tables, dark so you cant see what you are eating or unable to read a photocopy paper menu. Shame they changed management, it was used to be a lovely countryside pub with lot of history and good food but now bad quality food, not very good costumer service and too expensive.
A really nice place with lots of good historical atmosphere
One of the best in the country, haven t been for a while, glad to see the menu still has all the old favourites on it. King prawns in garlic oil is just how it was before. So good! Great beer, the Olde Trip is a great pint. Food : 5/5
Totally love this place, been going there on and off for over 30 years. Hardly ever changes and keeps the old world feeling, brilliant place.
A fantastic experience shared with friends and family. We were very well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed our food and the beautiful historic ambience. Highly recommend.
It was a fantastic time travel! With caring staff, divinely delicious food Kid-friendliness: Plenty of garden tables and chairs, with shady and sunny places. Children can play, dogs can enter the closed restaurant. The fire roared from a wonderful period fireplace!
Great food, Lovely staff , inspired interior definitely will go back
Lovely old wonky pub. Definitely worth a visit if in the area. Good a country walk
Amazing pub. Loved it
Ive been going to the Royal Standard for nearly 6 years now and hand on heart it always been one of my favorite pubs to go to near London and i loved it for the food, history and atmosphere. It is an institution. Unfortunately post covid / pandemic and in the last 2 or so years the Standard has become a victim of its own success and has become a rushed , commercialized factory. Even though the atmosphere is still fine and the interior is still the best of the best , whenever i go there i feel rushed by the staff who are pressured to find more seats/ tables for the onslaught of guests. My biggest gripe though is the food which really has gone down in quality and taste. On my last and recet visit i was served a nearly cold Sunday Royal Roast (£29) which did not feel freshly cooked either - seemed as if was done a good few hours prior . ( i was too polite to mention this to the staff and did not want to make a fuss in an institution i really like) At this kind of price range even a Toby Carvery roast or roasts at some decent pubs in the area or near Harefield seem a much nicer , tastier and cheaper option. This pubs prices where never entry level or cheap but the food used to be amazing & delicious. Not anymore im afraid and that is a great , great pity.
Great place! Amazing atmosphere, history and always something new to discover.
Not often you get to drink in a pub that has outlasted multiple empires Parking: Plenty of parking Atmosphere : 5/5 Parking space
OMG! Amazing!
I had the pigeon for me wrong way to serve it chunks on hard bread no sauce. I would have pigeon again but cut thinner with some kind of sauce and on the plate with fresh bread to mop up any sauce yum... The bar chap and staff were. Top rate location great I would definitely go back for another go I rate the place but remember to read menu xxx
Great food excellent service and a lovely old atmosphere in the place . Loads of parking available and easy to find.
Very unique ambience, highly recommend it
A really fun pub! We had a Sunday roast there for 10 and the atmosphere was great. Food was quite expensive between £23 and £26 for a meat option but for a special occasion I would be happy paying if I was sat in view of one of their fires again. Food
Great pub atmosphere with lots of history set in an amazing looking pub. Mussel pot is a personal favorite Food
Really good service and amazing place. My only disappointment was that, in what was a pretty long menu, there was only one veggie option (apart from a starter)
Lovely old pub, great beer, good food and friendly service. We just chanced it on our way back from Wembley via Beaconsfield and we were not disappointed.
I recently visited with family for a birthday dinner. Having pre-booked, our family of 7 consisted of 4 adults and 3 children. Having stated in my booking that we would need a high chair for the youngest it was frustrating to be told upon arrival that they didn t have any. We booked weeks in advance, it would have been courteous to call us to let us know so we could bring our own. The pub setting was lovely, food was good, and all the staff we spoke with were very pleasant, but there were too many occasions where we had to leave the table to find one of them, as opposed to them being readily available to serve us. Firstly we waited around 15/20 minutes before having to go and find someone to take our initial drinks/food order, thereafter to ask for condiments for the meal, and then thirdly for a second round of drinks. Overall a pleasant experience but would appreciate more attentive staff / service in future.
Took my mum and my boys here for Sunday lunch, considering how busy it was the staff were very quick to take our order and the food did not take long to arrive. When it did, it was amazing. Cant wait to return
Extremely friendly and well run pub. Svetlana, our waitress was quickly like family, and made us (and our dogs) extremely welcomed. It does have to be said that it did feel a little disappointing to only have one option (stuffed pepper) on the menu that doesn t involve any animal produce. One would have expected a pub of this calibre to have a better designed menu than this, with a plant based roast option for their guests.
Sunday evening. When i said i had a booking i was told by the table manager that he has had 150 bookings today so why would he know. I asked for the candle to be lit and was told by a waiter he doesnt have a lighter. Table was sticky i asked for it to be cleaned and it was dabbed over slightly. I asked to pay the bill i was given the wrong tables bill. I understand you are busy but understand that i have a toddler who was being babysat and i was really looking forward to an evening care free to enjoy good service and food.
Great atmosphere, very good food and drinks, highly recommended
Great Wednesday steak night dinner.
Best Sunday roast weve had in a long while and Cisco was a fabulous host!
Nice place to visit. Historic pub. Nice choice of beer. Didnt try the food on this occasion as we werent hungry, but the last time we were there it was very good.
The pub we drank in back in the 1990s is definitely better than it was then. I dont have rose-tinted glasses. They used to chuck you out at 10.48pm by sending the cat around and giving the death-stare (the owner, not the cat). Now they have gone all oldest pub ever branding which personally I think is a bit naff, but I suppose youve got to compete for likes and subscribes these days. Despite the branding exercise, the Royal Standard is still a lovely pub serving really good food.
Ive been a going at this pub since 2010, always appreciating the unique vibe and welcoming atmosphere. However, during my recent visit with my wife for a quiet evening, the experience was disappointing. The staff seemed to be in a rush, repeatedly pushing the menu on us, which detracted from the usual relaxed ambiance. The basic etiquette that once defined this place was notably missing. We ended up cutting our evening short and requesting the bill earlier than planned. Next time, Ill be sure to ask if theyre in a rush before making the hour-long drive from London. Its disheartening to see a place Ive loved for years lose its charm.
This pub used to be one of my favorite spots, and I ve been a regular visitor since 2017. I ve always loved the food, the warm atmosphere, and especially the welcoming service. However, my recent visit to celebrate my birthday with a cozy dinner was quite disappointing. From the moment we sat down, a waitress repeatedly pressed us to order, constantly asking what we would like, what we wouldn t, and whether she should come back later. This persistent approach made it difficult to relax and enjoy the experience. When the food arrived, it failed to meet the high standards I had come to expect, particularly the Lamb King Henry, which lacked the flavor it once had. To make matters worse, as soon as we finished our meal, another staff member maybe the manager rushed over took the plates shared another menu. The overall vibe felt pushy and hurried, a stark contrast to the relaxed, cozy ambiance that once defined this place. Despite the pub being only moderately crowded with empty tables, the staff s urgency left us feeling uncomfortable, cutting our evening short and start for London. It was a disappointing experience, especially on my birthday, and next time, I ll think twice before recommending this once-beloved pub to others.
Very attentive service with good food and great ambience equalled a very enjoyable evening!
Good Best Excellent Food : 5/5
Amazing dinner. Go early on a Sunday because they do run out of some roasts but it s well worth the effort. My new favourite pub to go to.
Had a good pint and the seafood soup was excellent. Keep returning here. Vegetarian options: See menu Parking: Plenty of spaces. Wheelchair accessibility: Floor and pathway a bit uneven but manageable.
Top notch, friendly great ambience. Cant ask for more. Immerse yourself in a time gone by in lovely company!
Middle of the day. Bit quiet. But great sense of history.
Very friendly staff. Good, no fuss, very satisfying food. Never had a bad meal. I love their liver and bacon, so tender and their pies. Yum yum.
Great outside seats
Amazing pub. Could spend all day in there.
Apparently the oldest pub in England at around 1000 years old. The building is fantastic and well worth a visit. We didnt eat but the barman was friendly, efficient and very knowledgeable about the history of the place. Nice beer too!
Awesome pub with loads of history. Food was amazing and lovely friendly staff Kid-friendliness: Our kids loved it, really interested in the history on the back of the menu too. Good size portions of roast dinners for them too Food : 5/5 |
Did not stay
Had a family and friends get together, all of our dogs were allowed. There is a largest range of drinks available the food was really very nice. Great outside area, although there is substantial work being carried out with heavy plan equipment. We were inside so no problem for us at all. There service was very good. Highly recommend.
What the hell have you done to this 1000 year old pub. I ve been coming here for over 20 years and for the first time ever I can tell something has changed for the worse. I was served burnt food (like really burnt), my mussels didn t even come, beef tartare felt like it was cooked, and the fish stew .. sucked. Staff were lovely as always.
Possibly the best pub in England. Massively historic, great food, friendly staff and a good range of real ales.
Amazing place
We ate lunch here, a table of four. We arrived at the entrance where the outside tables are located. We were offered menus and drinks straight away, our order was taken and we cannot fault the time it took to arrive, the quality of the food and the service was very on point. A must if you have room, go for the dessert menu.
The fish pie was delicious
Such a great pub. What a location. They were very friendly. The food took some time to come but worth the wait.
Such a nice atmosphere and nice prrsonal! An obvious stop if youre in the mood
A beautiful pub.
Was excited to visit for the first time last weekend having read all the positive reviews. However my experience was far from positive. We had a table booked, and asked a member of staff outside where it was. They told us to go inside to ask about the table. Upon going inside, we were told to go back outside to ask. Not a good start. We then just had to pick a table without a reservation. We then ordered drinks and food at the same time. Drinks took a very long time to arrive, to the point that they only arrived a minute or two before the food. Not great. Food was excellent when it did arrive though, hence 2* rather than 1*. However, towards the end of our meal, staff started to clear the plates whilst a member of our party was still eating. Really poor service and not good enough when youre paying £20+ a main meal. Apoogies were made but only after we pointed out what they had done. Overall, whilst the food was great, the service was unfortunately very poor.
A unique experience. Everyone needs to visit this place at least once.
Lovely venue, however was extremely disappointed with our food. I ordered fish and chips (£22) and was served it with fries which was not only bizarre but annoying especially for the price. The menu should have stated fish and fries, wasn t very pleasant.
Amazing Sunday lunch, huge portions in a stunning quaint old pub with nooks and crannies. Svetlana the waitress was very smiley.
Food was very good Im was so happy. Especially cauliflower For my partner what she is vegetarian. And Marta she was so friendly and she took care of us all the time and checked if we needed anything. Amazing job
A fantastic place and good food. A bit pricey though.
Breathtaking building internally, you can really feel the age and history of it. Food was very good and vast selection of beers and wines. We stopped in our motorhome for the night, thank you.
You are simply transported to the past. The fish & chips are huge! It was delicious, and it was the size of Spielbergs shark.
Very expensive for cheap quality and quantity Waiting 45min to be served Food
Great night and fantastic food and service
Had the sausage and mash which was really good, lovely pub, didnt know the pubs history until we got home and Googled it.
Really very very good. Ancient, too.
I had andrei help us and he was lovely, gave us his opinions on the food and gave us recommendations on how it would be the most enjoyable. Amazing atmosphere. 100% recommendation their strawberry beer. Worth the visit, would come again Food
Staff was very attentive and welcoming, but I thought the food was overpriced.
My go to pub, excellent food, service and ale.
Took my husband for lunch today. Brilliant service and the food was fantastic. Will definitely be going back to try Sunday lunch
A superb and very old pub a 20 minute walk from Beaconsfield. Great menu, nice beers and the service is excellent. A very eclectic interior too!
Such a wonderful meal! It has been a place reserved for special occasions but now well we just find any excuse! Our meal last week was simply phenomenal! My daughter and her friends were delighted with their fish and chips and burgers. The bouillabaisse was delicious. However, I had the lamb and it was absolutely perfect! Such an incredible meal. The staff are always wonderful and we could not have been made to feel any more welcome throughout our stay!
Just popped in for a drink one afternoon. amazing place
Beer tip top. Young (and old) staff super friendly and efficient. Visit as soon as you can.
Great real English pub. We had a really nice meal. Food and drinks a bit on the pricey side.
WE LOVE ANDREI
Nice pub in this beautiful historic building. Stopped by for an early dinner - service very slow on arrival and had to get up from our table to place food/drinks order (was told it was full table service)... but subsequent service and food was excellent. The fish pie was spot on... Very nice indeed
Loved this pub, from the atmosphere to the food everything was outstanding. Loved the interior and also that dogs are more than welcome. We got the bangers and mash and the stuffed peppers. Both were fresh, hot, and flavorful. Removed a star on service because they werent super attentive with us, but they could have just been short staffed that day. Still highly recommend.
Unique and lovely pub. Lunch food was excellent. That staff are lovely and very attentive. Lots of outdoor seating under lovely trees and lovely countryside walks nearby
Squeezed us in on a busy Sunday, the service and food wasn t perfect. But the pub atmosphere is amazing in contrast.
Beautiful little pub, fantastic atmosphere with guests & is dog friendly. However the food service & some staff were a let down. We were greeted incredibly upon arrival, however, upon ordering drinks my partner cut her lip on a glass, and although we had an apology, it seemed they didn t care at all. Then food service.. my partner ordered the cheese burger, which she said was lovely, i unfortunately had to chase the rest of my meal, which unfortunately in the end never came, so I didn t eat mine and it ended up coming off the bill. I would come again for drinks, however for the price you pay and the service we recieved, I would not order food again sadly ( such a shame as the food looked nice ) and is never a good sign when you leave hungry.. Perhaps it was a one off. However it very much seemed like all other guests were looked after apart from us.
Incredibly beautiful place. The food is great and the ambience is simply unbeatable
The food was more expensive than average, as you might expect from this historically rich location. The dessert, fudge caramel, was an invitation to diabetes. I ordered a Caesar salad, so no great surprises there, and an onion soup that tasted funny. Great atmosphere, and the service deserves 5 stars. I dont know the name of the waiter, but he made us all comfortable. Thank you. I think its a place worth visiting once.
Magic place full of history. Food outstanding
Dietary restrictions: Exilent Food
The Royal Standard of Engkand is one of the oldest Pubs in England, although it says the oldest there are another two that also claim to be oldest. Its in Beaconsfield and affluent town . The Pub inside is fascinating and as you can see from the pictures beautiful and unwue. The service was fsntastic and so was the English fare . Really woth a visit

If you want to have a full traditional experience in one of the oldest pub you have to visit The royal standard. Beautiful atmosphere with friendly staff that makes feel cozy and comfortable. And the food an absolute highlight of the day!!! Traditional, fresh and homemade!
Amazing place, buzzy vibrant and best of all great service and amazing food. Little bit crammed and hard bench seats, which added to the old world charm. We had a waiter from Portugal who had a wicked sense of humour, I didnt catch his name but he was ace Food
We wanted to find a cool and interesting pub in the countryside and this pub delivered on a fronts! Delicious homemade hand pies and food - including seafood.
My friend suggested this as a meeting place. I had never been before and the journey was down a narrow single track road. I almost went past it so look out for the sign ! There is a large carpark and the inside is like going back in time - in a good way ! Great service and lovely Fish & chips
Wonderful old pub with lovely food
It really is the standard for all British pubs.
A very interesting restaurant. Lots to see and the food and service is good
Very very Very nice
Loved it here. Great Sunday roast and excellent staff. Often young staff give off the impression that they dont care but they were all great here.
Had such wonderful time with friends here. I was the first to arrive and even though I was on my own I was looked after immediately and everyone who came over to serve was welcoming, kind and attentive. The service was perfect! The food was perfection too! I had the Midsomer Murder Chicken Pie and it was delicious and a very generous portion. We never felt rushed and it really was a great atmosphere and all the other patrons seemed happy too. Very cosy!
Oldest pub in england - what an accolade and they keep the vibe coming. ornate interior, full of character and style - best Chicken pie i have ever eaten.
The food was excellent
Fantastic food great pub, lovely experience
Great pub but getting too pricey these days
Top service, lovely food (always) They earn their money
Great place for a steak
Amazing! Had the most fabulous 4 course Sunday lunch with yummy red wine in an charming lively setting with real ambience. Cant fault it and will come again. Also, I never rate a roast out compared to those at home, but this was as good as you can hope for in a pub. We shared the royal roast (pork, beef and pork!) for £30 which also felt super reasonable. Proper custard with the crumble. Perfect baked gooey camembert. Large and delicious mussels.
We went on steak night for my Birthday. Food lovely and great service from Andrei and Minty. Food
Absolutely a wonderful find little creavises everywhere this pub is nearly thousand years old ... food I had cod and chips my sister had slow cooked belly pork tastes delicious, and a big big thankyou to our waiter charlie who promised me a rhubarb crumble as they run out Absolutely a must xxxx will be back tania & ali from Heathrow London
Amazing place with good food, friendly staff and great atmosphere! Really recommend visiting!
Worst place to be
Lovely old boozer proper historic place worth a look and pop in staff are friendly
Totally unique proper old school pub experience. Staff were lovely, food was excellent and the location is super cool. Only loses a star because its slightly overpriced but nothing crazy, just could have been a little cheaper thats all. Definitely recommend.
Really interesting and nice place. Went on a bank holiday Monday which might explain why they got our order wrong and it took such a long time, but the food was really nice and the place itself is great.
The staff were really lovely and helpful, unique ambience and great food and drinks.
Cold food but did recieve 10% off because of it Dietary restrictions: Very good with lactose intolerance Food : 3/5 |
Whitebait, and Muscles, both cooked well, service very slow, beautiful historical building said to be mentioned in the doomsday book
It is difficult to find words for this gem. The service is friendly, attentive, you always have the feeling that you are the most important guest of the evening. The menu is not very large, but varied. I ordered the lamb liver with bacon and mashed potatoes, which was so good that we stayed an extra night so we could eat it again. The restaurant itself is a feast for the eyes. An old interior with many collectibles. The toilets modern and clean. Since the parking lot is large, we took the liberty of asking if we could stay overnight with our motorhome. We were allowed. Even two nights. Gladly again. Thank you for the good food, thank you for the wonderful service, thank you for the place to stay. Top May 2024 Now we are back here after 8 months and are still as excited as we were on our first visit. Liver and fish & chips again today. Both excellent. We were also allowed to spend the night in our campervan again. THANKS
Everything Excellent , it was on Monday and less staff..
Lovely location, but reflected in the food pricing.
No vegan options. Poor vegetarian options. Terrible service. We spent half a hundred pounds on biege food. If Id have wanted beige food Id have gone shopping at Iceland. Standard has dropped dramatically since the summer.
Great place for a cosy fireside drink. Loads of beers and the whitebait is epic!
Cauliflower cheese was a yellow mush and daughters meal arrived so late everyone else had almost finished theirs. They had clearly forgotten. A bit disappointing....and expensive.
Dining in Englands Oldest Pub is nothing short of an experience from the medieval ages. Theres tons of charm and history in this historic place. The food is classic pub grub but theres specials too, so look out for them. Getting to the pub from either end does involve a very narrow lane, but dont worry, it does safely get you to the pub. Theres lots of outdoor space too, so may have to visit again in summer to enjoy a pint outdoor. Our host Aishwarya was excellent and offered advice on food and drinks. Thanks for a great evening!
Lovely old pub, very nicely furnished! We had a table in front of the fireplace. Good wine selection and fresh-quality-tasty food. Well worth the trip to Beaconsfield!
This is the best example of an old pub in the world ....Always a stop on every trip home to England.
If I could give 6 stars I would!!! This place had amazing atmosphere along with a great time with a good laugh. I had the duck and it was amazing! There s also a sweet chili sauce that was amazing I had to get some to go home! Prepared by Andrei and I will definitely be coming back!!!!
Very cool and cozy pub! Loved the atmosphere. The food was great as well! I had the onion soup which was very tasty, and my partner had the fish pie, they were out of the other pies but he said he really enjoyed it!
Super atmospheric old pub. Worth visiting. Good food.
Friendly service. Old historic building. Outdoor seating. Food is very salty. Pricey. Its not a modern indoor. Have fireplace. Would not recommend it for winters, but would love to check it out on a warm day. Toilets dont flush well. Tissues keep floating on top. Need renovation.
I came here with my dad, sister, son and dog, and we were blown away by the beauty of the old building. We were sat in a little nook which felt very private and away from the noise. The menu is extensive, and averagely priced for the area. All food was greatly enjoyed - I particularly liked my sausages & mash, of which the sausages are made in the pub. Will definitely be back.
Its an incredible and amazing pub ever. Super recomend it. Food
Tastes Sunday pork roast. Amazing old building
I went to this pub last week. Definitely not a place for those who are vegans or vegetarians. Only 1 choice for the vegetarian option. I asked for a sandwich but they couldnt accommodate that. So they gave me grated cheese, a measly plate of salad and 2 pieces of bread to make my own sandwiche. Definitely needs a menu revamp!! Wont be going back Vegetarian options: There was 1 vegetarian option!!!!
Quiet village pub with an interesting history and convenient location, expensive, but good experience and cool building.
The perfect place for a pub lunch! Camila, our server, was fantastic and gave great recommendations. Every course was delicious, but the pork in particular was exceptional. Cannot wait to return!
Very old pub with so much character. So much to see inside the pub and definately worth a visit. Food is good and a good selection of beer
The most wonderful pub in which I have ever been. Delicious and tender meat, environment exceptionally lovely and characteristic. It is worth a try!
Food
A terrible experience. This is a great building and lovely setting but our visit was utterly awful. yes the pub was full, we visited for lunch, but awful service. Clearly they had overbooked and couldnt cope, we had incorrect food despite having to order 3 times, the starters were ok after an hours wait to get them. from here on is got steadily worse. main meals all came at different times - Sunday lunch for a pub like this should be its bread and butter but it was obviously pre-prepared and warmed up to order. 1 of our party didnt eat as when the meal did eventually arrive after nearly 2 hours wait, the veg had gone missing from the plate and what was there was stone cold, also dont try and order drinks from the bar for your table - was told rather rudely they have to be ordered at the table (trouble was the order was missing)... not once did a manager come to try and help resolve the problems, they left the front of house staff to try and deal with a sinking ship. In summary - Kitchen couldnt cope, front of house couldnt cope despite have dozens of staff - poorly run and a huge let down. I will not visit again.
Few establishments can compete with this beautiful and warm pub atmosphere. The food was very good and the service was even better. Anna was wonderful. Make sure you check this out for the quintessential english pub experience with better food than the average bar.
The Royal Standard pub in Beaconsfield Food was not good, very poor especially as they charge £25 for a Roast Dinner. Went along for Mothers day. Pub very busy, food was served within 15 minutes. We returned our dinners because they were cold, received second dinner which wasnt a lot better. My granddaughter had burger and chips which she enjoyed which cost £20!! (Oven chips) Absolutely rip off. Would never go back again.
Lovely friendly staff. Meal was great.
I had a couple of friends visiting me from Australia. We decided to go for lunch and The Royal Standard was the first pub that sprung to mind. It didnt disappoint (and it never does). They absolutely loved the atmosphere. The staff were welcoming and Anna, our waitress, was lovely and very helpful and gave us great service. Best of all we able to sit beside the roaring fire with the rain pouring outside. You dont get any more old country pub than The Royal Standard. Nearly forgot to mention - the food was excellent too!
Anna was the star of the show, Amazing customer service Will cone back again Food : 5/5
Fantastic pub! Superb food and atmosphere.
The best pub. It is always very busy, so well worth booking. Always a nice finish to a Sunday stroll. Food is good, and if you are lucky to get a table near the open fire it is wonderful.
One of my very favourite pubs !!
This is an excellent pub serving traditional English fare. I had the game pie which was excellent. It was very busy when we went and the main courses did take 40 minutes but the overall service was good. It is a very old building so it was a little dark in parts of the interior.
an atmospheric pub with over 800 years of history... worth visiting... and tasting... I recommend it!
An amazing place. Fantastic food and lovely Staff.
