7 London End, Beaconsfield HP9 2HN, United Kingdom
The Old Town Friar has been apart of Beaconsfield for more than a century, serving the finest Fish & Chips.
I just got take away and honestly i’ve never been so disappointed. Got a tower burger meal which is a chicken burger with a hash brown, chips and a drink. The burger was wrong and was the driest bit of chicken with no hash brown and the chips didn’t have any salt or vinegar despite me putting that i wanted both. I don’t know how you can just g wet those things wrong but there you go.
In all the years I've bought fish & chips. I've never had chips on fish. The fish was stuck to the box; got to downmark that. Chips were medioca. The curry sauce, one chip dipped and chuck. Piss pour. Get a new supplier. I won't be returning, unfortunately. I'd rather pay couple quid more and have it down my local pub.
An item was missed from the delivery which is quite a common occurrence! Called the shop and was told they would send another item within 20 minutes. 40 minutes later my partner called and asked to speak to a manager and half way through the call the staff member put the phone down! Called again, spoke to a manager who apologised but was no help at all! We won't be ordering from there again!
Ordered on Uber Eats today and the worst chippy I’ve had by quite some way. - Chips were limp and sad. - Masala fish was soggy, tasteless and without even a hint of crispy batter, just a soggy mess. - Chicken Wings were actually quite nice, probably the only thing I enjoyed. - Sausage was old and likely had been sitting out for a long time. - Curry sauce was disgusting, bitter and inedible. - Review left by my partner was dismissed and labelled ‘fake‘. If you’re unwilling to address issues raised by customers, then you’re quite simply living in delusion. Hope you turn it around.
Offer 4 states bottle of drink you only get a can. Difficult staff. Garlic bread is rank. Didn't ask if I wanted chicken or shish .Different prices on different menus. General mess. Shame as pizzas ok.
Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome. This is the best fish and chips place in Beaconsfield! Prices are reasonable and I would definitely recommend the grilled wings which are full of flavour! Pleasantly suprised and this will be a go to.
Great place to get fish and chips which are really tasty. Also they do a nice pizza meal. Reasonable prices also
Never again. Ordered a thin crust pizza which was almost an inch thick. Barely any toppings and poor quality meat - did not taste good. Bland potato wedges.
Nice fish and chips £11 for mediun meal for 1
Large cod and regular chips and it was ok at best, cod still had the skin on and whilst it was long it was very thin, the chips were flavorless. I wouldn t go back.
This place is amazing everyone should try this place
Great staff & good food
Great place this is, very friendly staff, food was freshly made and tasty, decent price too.
Very good food and great customer service.
Fantastic service. The food is fantastic. I only wish they would takeaway the large delivery charges. Apparently you have to spend £20 then it s another £2.50 on top. Fair enough, I don t live far from them, but I am disabled.
Great chips!
Chip portion size seems to shrink every few months. The pickled gherkins are not pickled. This used to be one of my favourite chip shops but since trying to do more food choices the fish and chips quality have slipped.
Nice friendly staff. Food was good. Only negative was the taste of the vinegar, not sure what it was but it had an unusual flavour.
Great food. Excellent service would go again.
Good fish n chips
This place is not clean unfortunately. The rug on the floor has p no pile just consolidated dirt. Everything looks just unclean. Left without my order as Im not fussy but couldnt face the thought of the food!! Shame but honest review!
Honestly the best fish and chips I ve had in a while, I m definitely gonna recommend to this friends and family, brilliant customer service too! Fantastic.
Ordered delivery which arrived quickly and was hot. The food was very tasty and the portions were good. Would order again!
I ordered 2 cod and chips tonight, they were cooked fresh in front of me. Good portion size and great crispy batter. Would definitely recommend!
Ordered delivery for dinner, their fried popcorn chicken was amazing, chips fresh and tasty. Haddock piece was big and perfectly cooked, batter crispy just what was needed after a long day out. Living in Gerrards Cross this chippie is life saver, best one in bucks and only 30 minutes till my food came. Love it Vegetarian options: Veggie Pizza s, Burgers etc
Beautiful fish
The staff have been extremely negative and horrible to me and my friends every time we have been. When the staff got the order wrong, he decided to roll his eyes at us and give attitude. While the food is ok,the staff have never managed to be friendly and also show favouritism to certain people, making customers feel upset. I won t recommend it to anyone again
While the food is okay i feel the customer service could be a little nicer because of how I and my friends and are treated when we are in the shop. I do not want to sabotage the food as it tastes lovely but the customer service is really not the best and i believe that it can be worked on because of how they treat different people and from me and my friends experience, this may be based on their cultural background.
Me and my friends from Amersham decided to go here after the 7-0 beating of Man Utd. Food was Awesome, great curry and chilly sauce. Masala Fish Pies Chips Samosas Thank You! i will definitely be back.
Absolutely shocking.!! Please stay away at all cost!!!hair on my chips, sausage was days old just reheated and the guy behind the counter needs a serious think about this attitude!! as for the reply back nothing but lies Your staff member was so grumpy that He didn t offer that at all. Me and my work colleagues left and put the food we re it belonged in the bin outside. Would love to hear how do you justify cooking a cheeseburger in a deep fat fryer PLEASE PEOLE STAY AWAY. Bad food bad staff and a bad person replying to the reviews
Always good
Had a large fish and chips after Brighton away. Fish really good. Chips OK. Service brilliant though!
Hi, it is unfortunate that I have to leave this review but I feel as though it is something people should know before they come here. The food is amazing, definitely some of the best fish and chips in Beaconsfield and surrounding areas. However, this cannot take away from the truly alarming customer service. I have been in and out of the shop at lunchtime and dinner. There are local schools in the area, and it is upsetting to see the blatant favouritism shown towards certain school girls. As I scroll through these other reviews, the business have ignored the negative comments and labelled them as fake. What I am saying is 100% truthful, do not let yourself be fooled by the replies.
Food was sub par. Masala fish was gross. Curry sauce was far too spicy for a f+c shop. Food took over an hour to get here. And for 50p you get a single small sachet of sauce. Rude on phone. Overall very poor won t use again.
Rude customer service, on the phone, very slow and couldn t be arsed!
Beautiful food
Decent food, decent service... kebab could be bigger...
Great chips excellent service always !
Excellent food. Welcoming staff. This is a great place!
Food was terrible. Burnt chips and king size kebab was tiny. I called to complain and they couldn t care less. Threw the lot in the bin. Don t go here. Total rubbish.
My family ran this as a proper fish and chip shop for nearly 40 years and it was a go to for all in the old town. As I was passing, I thought Id give it a go and I was absolutely disgusted at the service, the abject quality of the food and also the high prices for what they were serving. The kebab I ordered took 25 minutes to arrive and was inedible. These guys are charlatans. I was speaking to local business owner that I told of this experience and he said he wasnt surprised in the slightest. He also informed me that without permission, these guys ripped out all the original 18th century Elm panelling, from a grade 2 listed property and then proceeded to tell everyone they did it with the permission of Hall Barn Estates. All lies. And just goes to show the lack of respect and ineptitude of these people. Avoid.
Unfortunately, the chips had not been freshly cooked & almost unpalatable. The fish was freshly cooked.
Ordered sausage and chips takeaway, the chips werent cooked in front of me and from the taste has clearly been sat there for sometime as cold. I also ordered baked beans and when i was given my food was handed a small can of Sainsburys baked beans.. The place is a joke, such a shame we dont have a good fish and chip shop in Beaconsfield old town.
I always feel sad to write a one star review as it s people s livelihoods but .they also need to know. Having used the Friar many times in previous visits over the years and had reasonable fish and chips this was a real disappointment. Stopped for a lunch. The fish batter was wet inside, almost slimy. The oil can t have been hot enough or food in for long enough. The chips were pale and limp with no taste. Having eaten a range of fish and chips from brilliant to poor this is the first time we have not even finished half the food. We didn t bother returning to complain as we had a timetable to keep to. The bottles inside the fridge on a shelf were all leaning over and not tidy. Whilst 2 portions of fish and chips was £21.98 which I don t mind paying if it was good and enjoyable Really need to learn how to cook fish and chips properly if the current owners want to continue. Would not recommend and will not be back.
0 stars, I had the rock because it said fresh today, the worst piece of fish Ive ever been served in my life I tasted it and spat it out smelled horrible I gave it all to the seagulls! Most of the reviews for this place are dreadful and most of the Answers from the establishment are ridiculous. There is not an easy way to reply to a reply, I think that Google need to change this. If people are going to the trouble of leaving a review they should have the facility to reply to the reply.
Warm friendly welcome with good pizza highly recommended
Horrible . The battered sausage I dont think was even pork and re deep fried . Pizza was not deep pan after he said it was . Never again .
Great food and amazing customer services, I would always recommend!
Immaculate chips and sausage, nice and big. Perfect fit for my mouth, my daughter loves a bit of sausage down her goblet x
I think I had one bad overcooked piece of fish, genuinely I ve only ever done fish and chips and/or sausage and chips. The fish is always consistently cooked, never overgreasy, and be warned they are huge, that fish is enough for two to three people to share, the batter is always crunchy and tasty, and the fish melts in your mouth. The chips are bug, chunky, and again never greasy and are a good texture, portions are always huge so can be overwhelming for one person. Very popular local place in town, because it s quick easy and convenient so can get busy, but good for quick, cheap and easy eats.
My experience at the the old town friar was not as pleasant as I expected (not like the good old days) first of i couldn t quite get my head round if it was a pizza house or chip shop (red flag already) now this brings onto my next bit of confusion, The curry source (more like kamikaze source) now usually I m a worrier when it comes to spice but this type of spice nearly sent me to hospital. I was literally fuming going back onto what I said earlier, where I said I was confused to what type of restaurant it was. I m now convinced that the old town friar is most definitely a curry house. #bringbackbland
Awful. Fish was dry, batter soggy, greasy & undercooked, chips stale, made from potatoes that should have been put on the compost heap several days ago. Only stopped here out of convenience - never again. Should have taken a cue from the miserable assistant who couldnt even muster half a smile. At least the fox ate well last night
Excellent fish and chips. My family and I absolutely love it, especially the chips! Will definitely stop here more often.
Superb food and friendly service. A great stop off after a long day
It was a 3/4 stars for me. I ve given 4 as pleasantly surprised. Especially after reading the reviews I was expecting the fish and chips to be a disaster. Ordered 3 portions and all three of us have said it was good. Cooked well, tasty and not overly greasy. The Panjabi folk are running the place now (not sure who was in the past but the kebab and appear to be doing well. It was a Friday and fairly busy so things were going to be fresh. Good customer service from the young chap. Well done. Shukria
Absolutely disgusting, the chips were like eating anemic razor blades and the pies were solid avoid this place!
Food is decent for the most part, but the people that work there are useless
Not the greatest to be honest
Utter rubbish , only had savaloy and chips ! Looked like it had sat there all day ,totally un eatable
Went in this evening and was mortified what I saw! After ordering the chef who served me with dirty hands on the till! left the shop unattended and popped to food van down the high street? Once he returned he proceeded to touch the main door and handle, his back side whilst pulling his trousers up! Then touched his mouth whilst looking at the orders on the wall. The chef with the same dirty hand them opened a pie from its wrapper out into the microwave and then dipped some fish into the batter and and then into the fryer! At no point did he wash his hands left the so angry! The council will be notified!
Not good st all chips where black and mum said her fish was black so sorry I dont give bad reviews but this time I had to
Got to be the worst fish & chips Ive ever had. Fish batter was soggy and no taste chips warm probably reheated and staff as miserable as sin. Never again
We had a lovely meal last night, 2x cod and chips, lovely fish, batter was really nice, chips were lovely. The gent serving was very welcoming and nice. Will definitely be back
Super impressed by how many chips I got with my Big Mac or as I call it the Bec Mac meal. I loved the burger and the chips that came with it and this is my favourite takeaway out of the much I have got before in my life. It gets a 5 star review from me, thats for sure. Will be ordering again.
Too much money for the quality of the food.
Excellent fish and chips! Great quality food and at fantastic prices. The first order we had was amazing for everything. The second time we ordered (Through UberEats) It was over an hour and a half late and we couldnt get through to the restaurant to confirm the order etc. This was probably down to Uber Eats and not the Old Town Friar (we had no confirmation from UberEats). Still when the food arrived it was amazing! Will definitely be ordering again!
We had a great meal tonight, 2 x cod, 1 large chips & a curry sauce. Delivery was quick so all just perfect many thanks
Food 5* s - Price 2*s but that s Beaconsfield for you. The service is excellent too.
Ordered savaloy and chips, chips were old and cold and overpriced, I am sure they were cooked well before they were sold to me, an effort could have been made to cook some fresh chips, I was the only customer in the shop at the time, could do better. Will not buy again from this fish and chip shop.
After reading some of the comments here I was worried about trying this place but did anyway and Im so glad I did all our food was cooked fresh the portions were good the price is similar to most other places even the scampi I ordered was the real thing not the usual cheap mush excellent 5 stars.
Delicious!!
Terrible fish and chips will never use again.
Just experienced the worst chips from the Old Town Fryer , cold and soggy. I actually didnt think you could cook chips soooooo wrongly ! As for customer service served by a very unfriendly guy.I wont be returning.
Just experienced the worst customer service ever by a Extremely unpolite rude young man. Please learn some manners, I dont appreciate my change just been chucked on the counter. Also while waiting did witness 2 other customers experiencing the same attitude which I did pass comment on when they left the shop. Bit of advice get your ear phones out looks so unprofessional, plus a please and a thank you goes a long way. To the gentleman stood out side who I think was the shop owner banging on about your foods cooked fresh is not the only element of a good takeaway. Absolutely shocking. Food not very good either. This is not a fake review
Beautiful, fresh cooked, excellent taste, very nice. Very good service. Cant beat fresh cooked, bravo.
Ive been coming here for four years. I wasnt aware that there had been a change in management because the quality of the food is excellent, as before. The fish is always freshly cooked and excellent, and the chips have always been perfect. Their chip portions are generous, too. Service has always been polite and quick.
My wife and I recently moved into the area and as we enjoy our fish and chips, we have tried 5 fish and chip shops all within a 4 mile radius of our house. We have both separately visited the Old Town Friar in the last 6 weeks and the customer service from this shop is head and shoulders above the rest with the worst customer service. On my visit there was no greeting and the man looked liked he wanted to be anywhere but serving in the shop. When my food was boxed up it was literally thrown across the counter to me. My wife visited the shop a couple of weeks later just so we could get a second opinion, just in-case it was a one off, but Im afraid it was just the same if not worse. Again there was no greeting, no smile and with only 3 customers in the shop, he had to keep asking all 3 what there orders were. The food to be honest wasnt that bad, but the extremely poor customer service means a 2 star rating and we will not be going back again.
The Old town Fryer used to be an excellent honest good old chippy, With a fantastic atmosphere, Untill the new owners. Not any more. Dont get me wrong, the food is good, Not spectacular but good, Could have done with a bit more salt and vinegar, and a greaseproof sheet in the box would have helped. Then came the price. The gentleman clearly asked for £7.99. I handed over a 20 pound note and got £11 in return, when chalenged he changed the cost to £8.99. Ontop of this he decided he waranted a 1 penny tip. OK its only 1 penny but that decision is mine to make, NOT his. Suffice to say, I will not be going there again. The chippy on the broadway just got a new customer.
Absolutely awful! Pie pastry was undercooked, sausages where solid, burger bun soggy and greasy the burger its self was dry and chewy. Chips looked and tasted like yesterdays chips re heated. We had delivered and was almost 30 minutes late called twice to chase up the food. So disappointed
Nice fish and chip from here
Chips were ok , Masala chicken not so good
Lost for words that s grease and water. So fish is frozen I d say. It was over cooked as it was crumbling and had no taste to it. £6:3ish for a medium fish I asked for a few chips n curry sauce some how they were a extra £4+ Never again I can t believe some people rated as 5* you need to shop around more.
Ordered via just eat, they sent a wrong item which was rank. Called them but they wouldnt send the correct item. The lamb wrap went straight in the bin, gross
Just moved into the area, purchased cod and chips and fish and chips. Food was very average and the service was terrible leaving my partner very upset. Not a good start. Food was literally thrown in front of her. Never again terrible customer service.
Fantastic, freshly cooked while you wait, classic fish and chips. Cant express how perfect they are. The best I have ever experienced. 100 per cent fabulous.
Nice fish and chips. Staff were helpful too. Check them out. Wow the cod was nice and crispy. Yummm
The fish is never over cooked. Really like this fish and chip shop.
First and last time will use this place over priced sub standard food staff need to learn people skills to work in this industry
Nice friendly staff
Disgusting food, was cold, wont order from here again thats for sure
Really excellent piece of fish, minimal batter (I asked) but chips a bit off hand.
good customer service, nice food
I see the owner has responded now claiming this to be a Fake Review. This would suggest to me that the owner is in denial of the standards on display at the time of the original review 5 months ago. I havent been in since - the Lack of recognition of problems indicates that I am wise to have not returned. Original Review 5 months ago (Sept) The new owners really have something to learn, fast, or they may go bankrupt Chips.. now iffy Fish, tasty enough, but so regularly sized it looked 100% factory produced/battered. the batter on the fish was thin, soggy, very yellow, almost food colouring induced yellow. Despite asking the order and getting the fish cooking, failed to check to see if enough chips.... so we had a 1 large portion (everything left) instead of 3 portions Portion size for 1 was large however. Manky bits of Lemon in bowls on the counter looking dried up. The takeaway menu is a joke, with so many errors and an Arabic Symbol slapped in the middle of the Italian Flag this clearly isnt printed in the UK (The Pepperoni pizza by example on the menu has no pepperoni, but has blue cheese etc.etc.) A shame the old owners have gone. Save your money, go to the new town fryer or Bourne End.
Worst fish and chips. Served cold and fish not fresh
Great food, recently renovated and new ownership but same great food. Now open everyday.
Very nice fresh cooked chips
This used to be a good fish and chip shop. Since the new owners have taken over it has declined rapidly. Curry sauce and mushy peas watery and stone cold. When we called to tell them so other customers wouldn t experience this he said microwave it with no apologies. Awful service and average food. Go to Smiles fish and chips in the New Town
Bring back the old owners!!!!
Didnt realise this place had changed hands, stopped on the way through and thought it would be a good idea for dinner, worst decision weve made for a while. The food was terrible, chips almost inedible, fish not much better and £35 for that was a joke. Avoid this place at all costs until they get their act together.
Went in to order 2 portions of chips. Very quick, crispy chips. Just the way they should be. £3 a portion which isn t too bad I don t think
Since the change of hands.... Sorry to say but if you like hugging porcelain or you have shares in Armitage and Shanks then great, this is the place for you. But I dont, I like clean fresh food. Come on you can do better. Overall Pony Sh**e.
Nice little chippy The fryer is a cheery person and cooks up a decent sized piece of fish without too much grace! Chips are excellent and theres plenty of them. Theres chilled drinks, the usual condiments, pickled onions, eggs, etc. They have set up a table or two in the road but if you prefer there is a splendid green with some benches on the other side of the roundabout. Great for a summer lunch/take away.
Id never recommend that place, the chips & cod was a mass of GREASE. Absolutely disappointing & disgusting, Id DEFINITELY WONT BE EATING FROM THERE AGAIN.
Great chips, very lovely staff & open daily
Very disappointed with fish and chips Sunday 1st Nov. 2020. Fish not freshly cooked and chips obviously been fried earlier in the day. Very sad as purchased as a treat for elderly family members and we were all unhappy. :0(
Great costumer service and lovely staff Excellent presentation food Best fish and chips in beaconsfield
Excellent fish/scampi and chips. Well cooked accompanied with a large side salad. Reliable local delivery service. All in all, very good value for money, would highly recommend.
Quick stop off on trip back to Staffordshire, brilliant food...
Lovely food fairly priced great location
Chip shop was closed.
Excellent service
Order never turned up. Phone left off the hook so could not get hold of them. AVOID THIS PLACE
Tiny portions, cold disgusting curry sauce and they charge through the nose for it
Just had cod and chips from here that I ordered by phone and collected. Food was ready on time and hot with melt in the mouth fish and lovely and fresh fish and chips. Really extra friendly staff couldnt have been nicer. Will defo use again and recomend to others. Was even were given a free box of summosis too which were jummy!!!
The chips were soggy and the fish not very good. for the price charged it should be much better quality. Guys please try to improve.
Not a patch on how it was with the previous owner, not a fish and chip shop anymore, just a greasy fast food shop, food disgusting and the hygiene is certainly not up to much. AVOID.
fantastic portion of chips and a nice size battered sausage and very well priced
Very poor quality - sausages showing pink in the middle, chips soggy, burger tastes of cardboard. They must have just changed management or something? Ill cook at home next time.
Dire. Dont waste your time or money. 20 in the bin. I cant believe this is in Beaconsfield. (One star because I cant comment with 0 stars)
The shop has been taken over by new owners and what a disappointment the place is now!! Fish and chips are rubbish and the whole place is more like a Saturday night kebab shop than old town chippy like the previous owners made it. Such a shame as we are locals and now have no where to have proper fish and chips. Dont waste your money on this. Such a shame!! Not impressed. Sorry.
Great service and staff. Fish and chips cooked to perfection!
I have been using this chip shop for years, unfortunately it has new owners and the food is now awful. A real shame.
New ownership has ruined what was once a fantastic chippy. Absolutely disgusting
Oh my goodness, always came here and it was always fantastic until today. The food was so bad today i had to check online to see if it was under new ownership, and i was right! Dreadful cheap quality food, i put it in the bin. Chips were soggy, curry sauce was yuk and pie was just awful inedible. What a shame.
Fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs and much more. My grandsons love their food.
Pretty dissappointed. Been a few times and the chips are always soggy or undercooked. Wont be going back again
Best fish and chips in a while.
A lovely place to eat. Fantastic fish and chips, salad and an incredible cup of tea in an unpretentious traditional setting.
Good fish but chips are always undercooked and a bit soggy Will go again but will be nice to get good chips!! 2 times disappointing
Good food. Pricey though
Good choice of fresh baguettes, salads and fish and chips.
Good fresh fish and chips. Really good salads and desert.
Excellent fish and chips. Cant really comment on the wide range of other options as we always take the cod and chips. Service is very friendly. There is usually a bit of a queue, but its worth the short wait!
Best Fish and Chips around. They also offer low fat options
Expensive for low quality food. Chips were wrinkly and soggy, burger no better than a kebab shop burger.
Beautiful Fish and chips
Lovely!! I turned up last minute worried I was too late, but they sorted me out a delicious meal!! Helpful and friendly and really good fish and chips!!
fish and chips taste good but it is expensive
My favourite fish and chip shop. Always great fish really well fried and crispy. My wife and daughter often have the salads which they rave about. Just wish they stayed open till later.
Always great fish and chips, and they have healthier stuff on the menu too
