208 N Winooski Ave, Burlington, VT 05401, United States
Full-service bar and taqueria in the Old North End of Burlington, VT.
I give it a solid 3.5/5. I grew up in California, so I echo what everyone else has said about it being overpriced and not a good value. If you're going for tacos and want a full plate of food, it's about $20 for 3 + rice and beans. I had the whole thing and still felt a bit hungry after. This is good relative to the area, not relative to all Mexican food. I think a burrito is the best value, and found the alcoholic drinks to be small for the price. Definitely looks to be a labor of love and passion though, but I personally don't think it's worth the hype.
Delicious tacos, fast and friendly service, solid atmosphere. Got a couple of pork tacos, including Al Pastor, and both were delightful! We were in a hurry and they were mindful of that, getting us our food quickly and making sure we were right on time.
This is not a fancy place and it's not in a fancy part of town but get past that and you'll enjoy great drinks and excellent tacos. And yes, you CAN have excellent tacos in Burlington Vermont. We arrived ahead of their opening at 5:00 pm and were one of the first tables in. When I left at 6:30, the queue was down the block and in the rain. Yes, these tacos are that excellent. I went with a variety - one chicken, one asada and one carnitas. With it, a local beer that was served cold and went well. Served street taco style - double tortillas and topped with cilantro and onions, the carnitas was good and the chicken was good but the carne asada was fabulous. The beef was tender and flavorful and there was plenty of it. Friendly service and an industrial feel with tables and chairs that don't match. And that's okay because it's all about the food at Taco Gordo.
Immaculate vibes. The Al pastor was phenomenal. Nice crust on the pork, I’ve never had a crunch to my Al pastor before, it adds a wonderful flavor and texture. Guacostada was also very good. Elote was all right. This place is a can’t miss for sure.
Solid taco joint. We like their straight forward and simple menu. Seating is first come first serve and it’s always packed.
So good! Shrimp tostado special was amazing. Fast service even when busy. Carnitas and pastor tacos are my go-to order.
With this being one of the only places around Burlington to get tacos, I feel inclined to give it a higher rating. Besides this the food here is phenomenal with lots of authentic Mexican dishes to choose from. I always enjoy trying the non-alcoholic Mexican drinks like horchata and tepache. The tacos always come out fresh and quickly. All in all, this is a great spot for a casual bite or a nice night out if you are feeling tacos.
We saw the highlights of this little taco place on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and were sure to include it on our vacation through the area. It's an order at the window type of place and they have a lovely little patio. Guy was right, the El Pastor taco was scrumptious! Layers of slightly crisped pulled pork and pineapple were the highlights of this dish set of lots of fresh cilantro and Adobe sauce that layered with flavor! Good service, relaxed atmosphere. I'm jealous of the folks that live within walking distance of this gem.
10,000/10 Would and do recommend to anyone
taco gordo is the BEST!! IYKYK Vegetarian options: awesome veggie selections and plenty for us carnivores too Food : 5/5 |
Definitely worth checking out
Some bomb food elote was so good and you know the el pasture was authentic when everyone at the table was questioning why it had pineapple. Some of the best Mexican food I had since I was in Arizona. Highly recommend this place if your are in the area you will not regret it
I was recommended to eat here by my friend and after eating here once, I wanted to get here every night. Really great food and nice, comfortable, casual atmosphere.! Loved my taco dinner!
Not a bad spot
Extremely expensive. Food is good..
Excellent tacos and drinks
Delicious food and friendly service. Great spot for tacos after a VTGreen match!
Female Hostess and female bartender were rude!
Good food and margaritas: very crowded but has a good vibe.
mid
Thomas was great in squeezing 12 of us in on Friday night. He smiled and kept us smiling. Henry is the best! His personal service reminds me of the level of service provided by a 5-Star hotel. The food is spectacular! This place is a true find.
This is a place of tasty food, thirst slaking drinks, and a kind crew who is good at what they do
Had the carnitas tacos and they were incredibly salty, like the top fell off the salt shaker when they were seasoning them. Couldnt finish the meal, and went to the grocery store to get some juice to wash the taste out of my mouth, then threw up a bit in the park. I have had meals there that were fine in the past so maybe a fluke.
My favorite tacos and burritos in the area. The al pastor tacos are truly something to behold but you cant go wrong with any of the options. The tinga burrito (gordo supreme add guac) is also delicious. Highly recommend, always lives up to the hype.
Dank margs, fun atmosphere, and most authentic street tacos I ve had in VT. Love the lengua tacos. The toppings bar is key.
best tacos!
I didn t even need to eat the food Devo followed by psychedelic furs playing in the background was enough to start with. The tacos were really good and the service was spot on. Food came out of the kitchen fast and hot don t overlook the hot sauce/condiments bar.
Fresh. Tasty. Quick.
Just awesome! A restaurant that takes you to Mexico. There was a long line when we arrived, but the service was so efficient that it was worth the wait. Thanks for everything!
Good food, a bit pricey for the amount we got. They also forgot to give us our full order. So we ended up paying for something we didnt get. I couldnt leave a review on the ordering site so I had to leave it here.
Each of us 2 had the Al Pastor and Tinga. And then we had another Al Pastor each - so.good! And some pickled red onions on top; nicely complemented the taste. Paloma cocktail and ginger beer were satisfying.
Someone said best carnitas this side of the Mississippi and I think they might be right. Was not expecting tacos to be that good. Plus it was a vibe. Got the chorizo, carnitas, and bean tostada. All very solid. I havent had a ton of Mexican food in Vermont but this exceeded my expectations.
They didn t accept my MD virtual id. Sad. I liked the food quite a bit (Al pastor!). My bfs burrito had pineapple, which I enjoyed, but he said it was not great (he s Hispanic). Food
Excellent!
sauces(in picture) so good. burritos so good.
Best tacos Ive had in the state, staff is nice, Al pastor was great, the ice cream is also good. Id pass on the brisket special next time
Amazing burritos they were different than I am used to but highly recommend them
Good food, reasonably priced, good drinks, music was loud and made chatting over dinner difficult. Felt rushed despite plenty of empty tables as the staff would whisk away empty glasses or plates the instant they were empty.
I m probably too old for this place. It s really dark and got pretty loud as it filled up. The Al pastor taco was delicious, the tinga was dry. Tacos are TINY. Also wish I d known how small they would be because I would have ordered more than two. Salsa was not good. More like taco sauce that you d put in the meat than anything. Cocktails were good but if you order them this is definitely not a $10-20 meal. I spent $40. Parking: I had to park three blocks away.
I couldnt find a single parking spot, I went around the streets 3 times and nothing.
These tacos have made me Gordo and Im not mad
Like in Mexico ! Fully recommend
My favorite taco spot in Burlington with great margs and impeccable service every time!
Every item we ordered tasted great. Service was outstanding.
Ordered three tacos and chips/salsa for takeout, service was so fast and the food was amazing. Absolutely no complaints.
Multiple tasty gluten free vegan options! Amazing!
My favorite place to get tacos in Burlington!! A bit pricey but worth it!
No chips and salsa brought to the table was odd. Ive traveled all over and 30 years in California chips and salsa while waiting. Small portions for tacos, and your paying good money for that. Also salsa should already be on the plate
Mean service, over priced menu, small portions, not that great, tacos are hard to screw up but ur giving tacos a bad name. reboot?
Pay $50 and still be starving
Great drinks. Your glass is grass and spicy marg shown here
Great food! How much you want to spend depends on you. A mind blowing burrito and water will cost 13 bucks. We on the other hand had street corn, flauta, mango sherbet specially drinks and a solid well earned tip. Thomas took great care of us and took time to get to know us. Thomas has a great personality! We are making plans for the return visit.
Frozen margarita is as good as they say. Tacos are full of flavor
Best tacos in the area, by far. Also the chips and guacamole are stellar, the service is friendly and the drinks are so good.
Best Mexican food Ive had in a long time. 20 yr California resident so I think I know my stuff.
I didnt have any booze there, but it looks very comfortable and friendly. I did have a taco and a burrito. They both were delicious! Crowded sometimes, but that is a good sign! Road construction made parking hard, .but it should be finished soon
Love this place it at the bar and get great service! The food and drinks are excellent!
Just relocated from The Mission district in San Francisco, and these tacos instantly made me homesick. Skip the tres leches cake, tho.
Got a few tacos while passing through. Tried the chicken, steak, and pork. All were good, but the pork taco was UNREAL!
Great food, awesome service, fun atmosphere!! Looking forward to going again!
Incredibly crowded and loud atmosphere. Food was mediocre. I got a tostada that was smaller than a corn tortilla usually is, not much to it, sauce was bland.
DELICIOUS. From the burritos to the tacos to salsas, this restaurant pops OFF. Just all around fantastic. Staff was super friendly and helpful, food came out quickly even though it was super busy, and the prices were pretty reasonable.
Best tacos in town hands down
great food and people!
Food is always fantastic, but if the al pastor is your thing be sure to get there come opening time since it sells out every night! Never a bad taco here.
Yummy, Fast, Courteous. A bit pricy, but you get what you pay for. 5/5
Great drinks and fabulous carnitas! House made salsa bar with radish and cabbage on the side. Dont hesitate to go. Totally worth it!
Sit outside if weather permits, very nice garden atmosphere (felt like I was in Santiago de Querétaro) Vegetarian options: Mushroom enchilada was incredible.
We love this place and visit every time we vacation on the lake. Simple but delicious tacos, perfect for a takeout picnic in the waterfront park!
omg!! a total gem hidden in the middle of old north end!
Nice place to chill with friends and have a drink. Fast service. But nothing we drank or ate impressed us.
Delish
Best tacos in town!!
Great food and atmosphere is a vibe
We just got cocktails this time with chips and salsa of course. Service could not have been better. We sat at the bar. Love coming here, it never disappoints.
So good! We sat at the bar and had amazing service. We cant wait to go back.
Great people, great vibes, but the quality of the food is strangely inconsistent. Tinga, Al Pastor, etc. are flavorsome in themselves, as are the abundant salsas and hot sauces, but as a whole the burritos I had were all quite bland. The rice and beans were scarcely seasoned, and so mostly filled space instead of adding depth of flavor. Shredded cabbage was welcome upgrade over lettuce, but would have greatly benefitted from being tossed in lime juice, pepper, and salt. Most disappointing of all was the tortilla, which had all the texture and flavor of a product made by Mission. Need to go back to the drawing board with this one. Corn tortillas weren t much better, as they rapidly disintegrated upon being folded. The chefs should consider ending whatever relationship they have with All Souls and make their tortillas in-house.
The best Mexican food Burlington has to offer, but objectively average and overpriced. $16 for a bean and cheese burrito pre tax/tip with no sides.
Great food, great people, great atmosphere, as long as you understand that means welcoming environment, not physical opulence. Vegetarian options: There are very limited vegetarian options Parking: You can usually find something fairly close on the street Kid-friendliness: Not kid-friendly in that the bar is the focus - with kids I would get takeout.
Absolutely delicious food and great drinks! Quick service, great staff! Will absolutely be going here again and again!
Always the best. If you haven t, try it.
El pastor taco carnitas Gordo burrito , and a house margarita to go.
This place is a complete ripoff. Poorly seasoned, no-toppings, terrible wraps and WAY too expensive. This place takes all the heart out of a taco joint and in my opinion represents everything that is wrong with the food industry. I preferred the convenience store that was there prior.
Food was Great yesterday, went back the next day and it was good except for my Burrito which I order Brisket, rice, bean and Cheese but they forgot to add the meat.... I noticed when i got home it was to late to go back...
My friend said her Marguerita was mediocre, but we both found the food to be delicious. I enjoyed the smoky-medium-heat salsa that came with the chips than did my friend, whose palate is more sensitive to heat. She blended the Verde sauce with the Roja to get the right amount of kick for her. Vaccination proof required, casual nightlife vibe... good choice of beers. The tamale could have been a little more moist but overall I was very happy with our decision to eat there.
Just not a lot of flavor yet and things were really salty. Weird based on reviews. Maybe a bad night? But based on the reviews and prices, even a bad night should be better.
Awesome tacos and burritos. Their vegetarian options are always really good - I love the jackfruit tacos, veggie chorizo, and guacostada. Great guacamole and chips too!
Best Mexican restaurant in Burlington. The drinks are great and the food is awesome. Not too expensive either. The al pastor is fantastic.
Coming from a Mexican; flavors were just meh, nothing too special/outstanding, I guess many people in the area are impressed considering they dont know very well what good/real mexican food is. Overprized Food-truck food
Excellent taco and margaritas, love that restaurant. Not always easy to get a table.
Really good Mexican food
Best tacos weve found in Burlington.
The Al Pastor was sold out so I went with the carnitas, which were tasty but not greasy. They also have a mini salsa bar so you can put whatever salsa you like on your tacos. Wasnt a big fan of the horchata though. Outdoor dining is available.
So weak. People in the east coast do not know what real Mexican food is like. They need to travel down to the Southwest closer to the Mexican border to discover what real Mexican food is. But youre just catering to the people on the west coast who probably love Taco Bell and generic Mexican food.
Im a fan of the traditional tortilla/meat/onion& cilantro tacos and these folks make some of the best. Salsa bar and toppings if wanted and a really solid beer selection.
It was a little insulting to pay $5 for such a small side of guacamole, even more insulting to have to pay about $3 for chips on the side (not included with the guac). The food was just a little better than others in town, but nothing to write home about. Painfully overpriced for what they offer. I will give them the credit that for how busy they were when I went, the food came out pretty quickly. Most likely will never return. Overpriced, mediocre small portions
Awesome burritos and AMAZING homemade chips and salsa! Cute outdoor seating and fun inside vibe (but crowded when waiting to pick-up a to-go order)! Definitely recommend to friends!
For years Mad Taco was the only option for authentic tacos in Vermont. Upon visiting Vermont for the first time in years, I am ecstatic to confirm that Taco Gordo has not only successfully dethroned Mad Taco, but has raised the bar with Al Pastor that would fool a Mexico City native. If you love tacos, youll love Tacos Gordo. PS: Im sure their burritos and other offerings are good too, didnt try, Im a taco purist.
We had a party of 6 and sat outside, our server arrived promptly and brought us the usual amenities. After placing our order our food arrived quick and hot which was nice because they were fairly busy and I expected a longer wait. We had a nice sampling of the menu, tacos-chicken, brisket, beef and tostadas, along with beans and everything was tasty and flavorful. The tacos were presented with soft corn tortillas and you have a choice of ; or 5 sauces, from tomatillo and jalapeño, to a smoky red hot sauce (chipotle?) all were tasty in the ranges of heat. The ONLY negative thing I would have to say is cost .over $5 for one taco, no sides with that, just $5+ for one taco. The service was fast and the servers were personable, service with a smile and in MY book, that counts for a lot (especially now a days) This is a basic sit down place, not fancy, definitely feels like a locals place.
Just ok. Chips were disappointing, al pastor and chicken tinga tacos were pretty good but nothing special. El cortijo is better.
Im from Cali I know Mexican food this place does it right Modelo cans as well
Best tacos Ive ever had in my life. Great staff. Will return.
They modeled the crispy boi after me
Previous reviews comparing it to the Southwest, well VT is in New England aka the Northeast. I lived in a Southwest state and have been hunting around VT. Taco Gordo was great! Guac was okay, salsa was awesome, beef tostado was awesome, chicken and fish tacos were good, margarita was a pleasant surprise on something simple that plenty of places still can t get right. Most off all, the staff was excellent. Everyone had a smile on their face even on a 90 degree day and were very polite. Great spot you should check out.
In my entire life, I have Never had a burrito as good as this one. I feel like Gustav when he took a bite of Remy s ratatouille. Bravo, Bellísimo!
Give them great meals of beef and iron and steel, they will eat like wolves and fight like devils.
Waiting for a table not cool, but the food and staff were great.
I never really enjoyed tacos as I dont eat a lot of meat but the chicken tacos at Taco Gordo were incredible! Its a great restaurant with indoor and outdoor seats. The food is a great value and the margarita and drink selection is overflowing!
Sat at the bar. Service, food and drinks were awesome
yoooo the scorpion bowl !!!! honestly tho.. u can spend as little or as much here n leave w a full belly n heart <3 Vegetarian options: Vegan too ! Dietary restrictions: ~ Gf ~
Went on a Friday night average noise level for atmosphere, food came quickly and was good. Nice flavors and friendly staff. Would definitely go to again!
Taco Gordo is awesome! Their online menu is marked for food allergies, including gluten-free, which is great for me, since I have Celiac. I got the bean, al pastor, and chicken tinga tacos and they were all great. They were flavorful, but not overly strong, and the chicken tinga was one of the best Ive ever had! Vegetarian options: There are a few vegetarian options, mostly beans, which are very tasty. Dietary restrictions: The menu online is marked for gluten, vegetarian, and vegan, and the staff is knowledgeable about allergies/restrictions. They double checked with me that my gluten-free food could be cooked on the same flat top as a flour burrito (it could be, but I appreciated the effort). Kid-friendliness: If you are getting tacos, you order them individually, so its easy to adjust for a kids appetite.
Super yummy. Everything is fresh and tasty!
One of the best places to get tacos outside of Mexico where I lived as a kid. Vegetarian options: Try the guacstada Kid-friendliness: My six year old loves this place. Wheelchair accessibility: At street level. No steps.
Some of the best food and tacos I have eaten. These flavors are incredible. There s a perfect amount of variety of delicious meats and veg to choose from. And the cocktails are just as great. Plus the staff is friendly and super helpful. I had an amazing meal!
Very average Mexican food. Used to be way better.
Great!!
Was pricey for portions. But good.
Gave them another chance, and indeed the food was perfectly prepared (not over-salted) for three orders in a row. The tamales are outstanding, and I don t remember having better in my life. One remaining complaint is something Taco Gordo maybe can t fix: the space is extremely cramped. I wouldn t dream of dining in, but even on weeknights you have to fight your way to the takeout counter.
Delicious vegan burritos, large portions, and good chips, salsa, and guacamole.
Tasty food and drinks. Kinda weird layout but it works.
Its Taco Tuesday in Burlingtons old North end and theres no better place to be, than Taco Gordo. Its a local hub of loud, standing room only, self-service deliciousness served up in baskets of bueno. With a full bar, and a creative Inez mixing up everything from standards to special requests, you really cant go wrong. Start with the chips and guac, especially if youre like me and love your fatty avocado cut with a little extra acid...and dont forget the agua, because theres no sparing the salt on the snappy house made tortillas. It was tempting to try it all...but I limited myself to a taco tinga, pork tamale, and guac tostada. The tostada arrived crispy with a healthy dose of cilantro that I really enjoyed. The taco was both light and satisfying with a good mix of flavors...if youre seeking senseless heat, this is not a hot pepper challenge. Its good authentic food. While the masa was on the dry side (likewise the rice), the pork tamale was full of flavor. With a side of rice and beans, my three choices turned out to be more than enough for a fulfilling and enjoyable meal. Its close quarters, but most of our nearby diners were friendly and eager to share in conversation. I was concerned about one man at the bar who appeared to be gnawing on his forearm, until I watched him dip it in salsa verde and realized it was a massive burrito. Next time, Taco Gordo...next time...mi amigo.
Guy Fiery was right when he said the Al pastor taco was quality! The sweetness of the pinapple plays perfectly with the pork. Safe to say Taco Gordo has the Best tacos in burlington! Also loved the salsa/hot sauce bar. So many unique options!
I absolutely love this place! I can tell you this is probably the most authentic Mexican place I ve been to in VT. I was very surprised at how good the tamales are! And the tacos! Wow I can t even explain they are so good! My only issue and I m still giving this place 5 stars because it has nothing to do with the food It s the staff. There s 2 guys that are so nice but some of the girls seem so bothered and almost like they don t want to be there. I don t know why it looks like such a fun place to work at. But every experience I ve had has been kinda bad they don t smile kinda give you a you re annoying me look and it s uncomfortable. Never content with the tip and now it s 18% and up. It s happened all the times I ve been there and I go there a lot! That s the only thing I hope the owner will read this they legit look annoyed to be there specially last time I went there was a new girl and I felt like I was bothering her. It has nothing to do with the food! The food is incredible and I will be a regular costumer as long as they make those delicious tacos!
Dietary restrictions: Non-dairy options. Food
Food was a bit salty
bad food
Suddenly the $9 bean burrito costs $11.75 pretax. Bruh. Its a bean burrito. Chill.
Great Mexican food and good mixed drinks. Laid back casual feel
It should be called saltogordo! Everything was way too salty. I love salt but this was way to much. Ordered margarita without salt and it came with massive salty rim! I spoke with the wait staff and they were totally dismissive. I was just trying to give feedback but it was not welcomed!
Unreal pork
Best tacos in Burlington!
Great food, surprisingly filling for just a few bucks. The carnitas tacos are delicious. All of their salsas are outstanding. Great guacamole and good cheap Mexican beer. We fed our family of four for about $40. one person can eat here for about $10. Great food great value!
Best tacos and drinks in Burlington
Super delicious tacos, a variety of salsas, hot sauces and taco toppings, really yummy drinks and a great ambiance and friendly staff. I cant wait to go again!
There are not enough stars for this phenomenal taqueria. Each variety of taco and salsa bursts with flavor. The tortilla chips are quite salty, but not unpleasantly so if you enjoy them with salsa. Absolutely coming back on my next trip to Burlington.
Only Mexican food worth eating in the area
Too Salty. Food is decent but gosh why is everything is so salty? It takes away from the flavors. They even pour tons of salt on the chips. No good. Use less salt
Cultural appropriation at its finest.
The taco al pastors where amazing
Yum
Enjoyed their burritos and chips with salsa. Outdoor dining is nice, and often busy, but with the wait if necessary.
The tacos are really good. I had the carnitas and chicken tinga. Both were delicious. My only critique, which is going to sound weird, is they had too much meat In them. And it took away from the integrity of the taco. I didn t find them salty when I visited. And the salsa were very good too.
Their meat is perfect. Great selection of hot sauce. Efficient service. 100% recommend.
This is by far the best taco in Burlington. The cocktails are fantastic.
to be honest, I am sad that to say my burrito was cold and idk why:((( my friend and I both got the baby burrito and it was cold in the middle and the meat was cold !!!! #sad. then, I got a pork taco, which also happened to be cold too??? what da heck! I was super sad because im a huge fan of little Gordo but this was very upsetting for the price of the burrito and the fact that this delicious burrito could have been warm #depressed !!!! also, pls use black beans instead of pinto or add black beans to menu !!!!!! not huge fans of pinto beans sadly. I like the topping bar inside tho, that was very clutch, however, the burrito needs to be warm!!!
Great food and great drinks!
Very good tacos
Quick service and delicious food! Good size servings and wonderful drinks!
I live across the street from this place and used to get the burrito about twice a month because it was pretty tasty and affordable. Nine dollars for a burrito, 2 for guac, and 1 for cheese came to a 12 dollar burrito plus a couple dollar tip and I was good. Now the same burrito is 11.75, plus 2 for guac and 1 for cheese comes to almost 15 dollars for a literal burrito. Im a vegetarian so dont get a filling. If I add in tip and tax thats like almost 20 bucks for cheap, street food. Disappointed in this price gauging, burritos are filled with some of the most affordable ingredients (beans, rice, cabbage) not actual gold. Guess Ill make my own. I gave 2 stars because at least I still get to smell their yummy food from across the street.
AWESOME !!!!!!!
Foods was VERY salty. ($4 per taco)
Walked up in person and ordered to go. Mistake, online orders are process the same as in person. The wait was like 45 min. ORDER online...why wait?
A solid taco spot in town. I tried a couple different tacos that they reccomended and it hit the spot. The people were polite and helpful. Well be back for more!
Im from taco wonderland, and thats not fair, so for the speedy cheerful service you get at Taco Gordo, I still give it 5 stars. Tacos are alright.
Just... just go. Go, and stuff your face with some of the BEST tacos and yummy others that youve had in forever. Open for indoor, outdoor dining and takeout. Always clean facilities and friendly staff. Finding close parking is harder after 3pm. DID YOU GO YET???
Lived up to the hype. The tinga taco and bean taco were the best in my opinion.
They have a legit salsa bar. This is everything tacos should be. Amazing house made salsa and hot sauce, hand made corn tortillas, flavors with depth and just the right amount of spice and not over priced.
Great food and atmosphere.
Better than you can get in socal
