Bit hard to find the entrance but an amazing place!! The cocktails and food are excellent.

Quaint little restaurant that s hidden away in Eau Claire. Drinks were great and apps were good. Atmosphere was wonderful!

Took my family here for my mom s 66th bday dinner. Awesome vibe, amazing drinks. Food was really good but the small plates are TRULY small plates. Extremely small. I think we expected them to be appetizer sizes but they were way smaller than that. We ordered a bunch of different food items to sample and share, everything tasted great. One thing to note is obviously the vibe is awesome but it is dark, so if you re bringing older parents, they will probably need a flashlight to read the menus Service was great

One of my favourite speakeasy style bars in Calgary. They have a great selection of drinks and Vietnamese food at an affordable price. Always have a great time coming here, with great memories attached!

Huge fan of this place! Delicious Passion Fruit Paloma, Mai Tai, shareable drink in the seashell (forget what its called), Pork and Chicken Banh Mi, Spring rolls, skewers and I need to try more. Love the decor and vibe of the restaurant. Such a nice date spot and we will be back!

Came here after hearing great reviews from my daughter. I wont listen to her in the future. Not sure what to make of the vibe, supposedly a speakeasy. No sound panels which forced us to speak over the music and the din of other patons. Food was standard Viet. fare, nothing special. Tried 8 cocktails between 4 of us , the best was the Coco Cabana. Would only return for cocktails.

I rather enjoyed this restaurant. Portions were on the smaller end, but the cost per menu item was reasonable as well. We did have a number of drinks, so that could explain our overall expense. The table we sat at was tight. Only knock against them.

Walked in and were seated without reservation. Appetizer skewers, pancake, and pineapple stir-fry were all delicious. Dessert was tasty as well. Our server really stood out as being friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. Paper Lantern is a hidden gem for sure. Bring back Bo Kho please.

I always enjoy coming to Paper Lantern and bringing my out of town friends here because Tanner and Jordan are always super welcoming and I love supporting small family businesses, also the food is great. But the last time my friends and I came in at 10:30PM for last call drinks the workers seem very upset that we decided to show up so late . We all ordered drinks and the server already asked us how we would like our bills. I had to make a phone call outside and to my surprise trying coming back in the door was locked and it was 10:40PM. Closing time is 11PM so I wonder why that s the case. I asked the server about it and she said sometimes the door locks on its own? And got very defensive about it. I hope that this was a one off but if you close at 11Pm expect people to come in till then. I ll be back but I hope next time we ll be greeted with a smile instead of discontent.

Satisfyingly Surprised.

Quite literally a hidden gem. I was surprised to find out that the food is Vietnamese. The food and drinks, while a little expensive were all delicious! My Vietnamese friend swears the food here is also legit! Highly recommended.

Can t recommend Paper Lantern more! We tried several drinks, the spring rolls and 2 of the banh mi. Drink of the night for us was the Morning in Hanoi, but I also loved the staycation.

Okay so I went here with a few of my friends looking for a neat place to eat and somewhere cheap (as were high school students and cant afford expensive meals for fun) and it was a relatively good experience. The food came fast and was alright, but dont be deceived by the spring rolls in these reviews because they changed them and they are now tiny. The atmosphere was nice, sketchy entrance but it was otherwise good. Although make sure to leave a tip, or else the female waitress (who didnt serve my table) will become entitled to one and let you know. Otherwise, good time.

We visited Paper Lantern last night and our table of 6 were very impressed. Despite the small space and limited staff we were well taken care of. The atmosphere is great, the cocktails were unique and delicious and the food was excellent. While the medium plates were great, the consensus of our group was that the small plates was where the food really stood out. We will not hesitate to come back again.

I heard about this restaurant through American Express. I was excited to see how it was. I was not disappointed at all. The ambience is perfect. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was awesome. This little place is a gem, and I would recommend you try it out.

Cannot recommend highly enough. Drink menu was extensive and innovative, food was simple and delicious, service was maybe a little slow but very friendly and thoughtful, and the price point is way lower than any other place I ve been to in Calgary that delivers on the same level of mixology/cooking. Had the Midori Garden and the Out of Office the former featuring matcha with sesame oil so make a really unique sour, the latter using a coconut fat-washed bourbon to make a really smooth, booze-forward drink with a tropical flair. The pineapple fried rice was piled with shrimp and pork belly and was somehow only 12 dollars (??) and the Bahn Xèo was crispy, sweet, savoury, delicious. Go here.

I d wanted to check this place out for a long time and I m happy I did. The music was pretty loud, but the vibe was good. The drinks were pretty good as well but no standouts. I was there with family and there were six of us and I think we had tried almost all of the cocktail menu by the time we left. There wasn t really one that I didn t like. We never tried the food, but I ll be coming back to give it a shot. The service was a bit lacking, although it was a little busy in there. We had to flag down our servers a few times to get more drinks after sitting there for some time with empty glasses.

Really great pork belly skewers, shaken beef and cocktails. Next time to try a few new things I ll order banh mi and the carpaccio - a lot of great stuff on the menu. The Morning in Hanoi cocktail was great (like an espresso martini but Vietnamese coffee). The Pandan Painkiller cocktail put me in the tiki mood - excellent. The Out of Office bourbon cocktail wasn t different enough to order again, and the spring rolls were fine, just nothing super elevated like the rest of their bites. Awesome atmosphere and vibe.

I love tiki, and this is probably the closest you ll get to an authentic tiki experience in Calgary. Just missing a fake volcano spewing stage fog and surf movies on some television. (Yes. I am aware that it s a Vietnamese restaurant that serves tiki drinks, but just add some decorations and you have a fusion smash hit in the works. - maybe some Spam Fried Rice too) Dietary restrictions: People with Nut Allergies should avoid. Wheelchair accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible.

Drinks were amazing, so unique! The food was very delicious, however I thought the portions were a little small. I wanted to go to a cocktail bar for my birthday with some friends without the insane prices and paper lantern was perfect for what I was looking for! Not too hard to find either! I will for sure be back!

If the incredible food and drinks don t make you swoon, just wait until you leave the bumping hip hop to the vintage Vietnamese pop playing in the bathroom. Relieve yourself in this minimalist sink amidst painted palm fronds and imagine yourself peeing outside in a small town near Saigon in the 1980s. The sink is a great height and sports an automatic motion-sensing tap that will activate as you sway to the dreamy tunes.

Sat at the bar and had to flag someone down multiple times. The bar was also left unattended a couple times which feels unsafe to me! Wonderful food and drink, just kinda got forgotten is all

Relatively poor start on their part. Had a reservation for a table of three, got sat at what would be a table for two. After asking if we could combine the table beside us so that we could have a comfortable dinner and lots of shareables, we were scoffed at and told we have lots of reservations, we normally sit three people at this coaster-sized table. We were going to leave, i was looking at reservations elsewhere as this was laughable and poorly oriented service. Finally they agreed after much debate to combine the tables. The manager came over, said a few mocking words before saying we had to be out by 1930. The time was 1800. That was acceptable. The drinks were fantastic, however the food fell way short, as did the service. The only things with flavour was the crispy crepe, the rest of the food failed to have any taste. The waitress tried to be nice after but obviously we were left with a bad taste after the initial interaction. Further to mention the steps down to the front entrance of this place were not shovelled and extremely slippery - something to consider perhaps is shovelling your entrance?

Love the decor and ambiance of this spot, and the food is great too. Tip; order what the kitchen is having - always some good, authentic eats

The atmosphere, drinks and service is all great. I genuinely would go back for just those things. But I was really looking forward to the food and was super disappointed by it. The banh xeo was almost gooey, completely lacked flavor and the dipping sauce was very bland. Spring rolls didnt stand out from grocery store spring rolls. General lack of the fresh and spicy flavors that I expect with Viennese food. We got a second supper at a nearby place in Chinatown and were much more pleased with that.

This is a speak easy located in Chinatown and we were excited to see what all the hype was about. Here s my take on the experience: Pros: their cocktail list is massive - if you don t want something that s fruit forward go with a cocktail rather than a tiki cocktail as those have a stronger juice flavour to them. Their food is also pretty good to share with a group, and they re reasonably priced. Cons: I think overall the dishes were ok. They weren t the ABSOLUTE best I ve ever had but they were good. Their pho could have used a side of chili oil or spicy garlic sauce. If I had to choose the best dish, I d say their pineapple stir fry was probably the most impressive in terms of flavour. Runner up goes to their shrimp crackers, seriously they re addictive! Overall this is a fun place for drinks and casual small bitesz

Amazing place! All the cocktails are great, and if there isnt one you think youll like, they will make one specifically for you! All the food is great. Nem Chua is wonderful, wings are super tasty, cant go wrong with anything really. Definitely eat what the kitchen is having, it never disappoints! The flavours are very authentic.

We shared bar snacks and small plates which were super delicious, especially the porkbelly skewers and carpaccio. Drink cocktails were also spot on. Staff were very helpful and the hidden speakeasy vibe was great. We were surprised at how good this place was and definitely plan on returning.

Nice but small portions... go for delicious snacks and wonderful cocktails! I had the bun (Vietnamese noodle bowl) it was delicious! The vibe was casual, with slight hints of what I would see as the iconic tv show MASH inspired Vietnam style with paper lanterns and olden day pepper grinders & exotic bottles on the walls in a smaller sized resto/bar setting. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were stylish, friendly, and positive. Every table was full and everyone was having a great time, it seemed! My only recommendations: please put hooks on table for us ladies and our fancy purses ;) and with no coat check the dining chairs were not helpful for hanging winter jackets maybe a few coat racks?

Great ambiance, Servers were excellent and food was good, some items could have had more flavour, however the carpaccio and chicken roti banh mi were excellent. Bartenders were rude when we asked about a cocktail whose flavour profile did not match the description, could have been handled better, but overall a fun experience.

Ambiance is not as private as I d like a speak easy to be (in terms of table set up), but would be fun with a big group rather than for a date night. I love this place, the drinks are top notch, they are creative and always coming up with new ideas. The food is unreal, all their dishes are so flavourful and have all the right textures and balance. All the staff are all awesome too, I have never felt neglected there. Part of me wishes I could keep it as my little secret.

One of the best cocktail bars in Calgary. A lovely selection of classic tiki cocktails with some new riffs sprinkled in. The atmosphere is the standout - a true speakeasy experience as the bar is hidden behind a nondescript door, but as soon as you walk in youre greeted with vibrant East Asian decor. The food is simple street food. Wouldnt come just for the food, but its a nice and basic accompaniment to the cocktails.

Cannot recommend this place as they dont want our business. On a Saturday night, we specifically called to ask what time they closed and they said 12:30am (even though it says 1am on Google and on their website). However, we got there right after 12:10am and they said theyve already done the last call and refused service, which is their rights I guess. Coming from out of town, we walked quite a way to get there, so this was very frustrating especially because we called. Advice to the establishment: respect your customers time.

Tasty small plates and cocktails with a really welcoming staff. Not cheap, but worth it for a nice time out with friends. I wouldnt take kids or a very large group; its a cozy bar with a great restaurant. We stuck with pescatarian options or tofu, and there was more than enough choice.

An amazing and delicious spin on Tiki culture! The food is to die for, with everything worth praising, and when paired with Vietnamese inspired cocktails and Tiki classics, it just comes together! On our list as one of Calgary s classics.

We went to this hidden gem of a speakeasy for drinks with friends and were very pleased with the experience. The drinks were creative and fit the theme of the restaurant well. They were also fresh and summery, perfect for a hot day. For food, we ordered the crackling salmon spring rolls, papaya salad, and beef salad. All the flavours were en pointe, everything was fresh and crunchy, and the seasoning was perfect. Our friends ordered the beef carpaccio, pork spring rolls, and the crepes. The beef carpaccio surpassed that of some of the nicest restaurants in YYC. We will definitely be coming back for more.

One of my favourite bars in Calgary. The food is great, but what makes Paper Lantern a 5/5 is the atmosphere and staff. I hope the place doesn t become too popular tho so I can still get in. -_-

Great vibes here at the best cocktail bar in Calgary. The drinks are not only delicious, but you get bang for your buck because they have a kick to them. The food is as good as any top restaurant. Must try the banh mi (pork belly) and the fish sauce wings. Every dish is sure to please!

I ordered a Morning in Hanoi and it was delightful. A bit sweeter than I thought bit again, its inspired by Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. The vibe is cute, its more of a speakeasy bar. The music in the washroom is soooo good when I came in as it was playing Vietnamese bolero.

Oh my goodness this is a must - if you can find it :) little sneaky speakeasy style entrance. Brilliant cocktails and great food for sharing.

If you can get over the sketchy exteriors (it s a speakeasy type place!), this is an amazing little find. Good viet bites and amazing cocktails. The ambience of the place makes me feel like I am some Saigon tiki bar from the 60s. Plus the wait staff are great too. This place is a gem!

Love coming here for drinks! My absolute favourite is Pandan Killer. Really fun speakeasy. They are packed on the weekends, so definitely make resos in advance.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while and decided to head in for a late dinner, unfortunately when I walked in I was told the kitchen is closed at 9:30 . I sat and had a drink but was pretty disappointed that there was no indication that I saw on line that they close the kitchen that early, it may have just been a slow night and not normal but still annoying as a customer. Especially one that doesnt live in the city and made a point to go there for the food.

Fun place to find. Enjoyed dinner and drinks here in November. We had a reservation, so we were seated quickly. The first person to our table offered us some history and info on the restaurant, the menu, and the different people working and cooking there. We tried an assortment of things from the menu with some recommendations, and none of it disappointed. All the food and cocktails were great, and the service was welcoming, kind, and quick. Hope to visit again soon.

Love this spot! Been here twice now and will continue to come back. Great vibes, high energy place with a decent little food menu with great vegan options and an expansive and fun drink menu! It can be busy and waits can be kinda long if you don t have a reservation but the wait is certainly worth it!

Got in randomly on a Friday with no reso and it was amazing. We decided after a bartender friend had been talking it up for almost a year now. And they did not drop the expectations the drinks are delicious and to die for and the food has the amazing flavors of Vietnam Ive been wanting in my life.

You get the delightful duality between feeling like youre in a fancy cocktail bar, while simultaneously feeling like youre in someones home - everyone is so friendly.

I had a chance to visit Paper Lanterns a little while ago. Ill start by saying the service was really good. There were lots of servers happy to help and the family dynamic they presented was really unique (all the staff seem to be related.) The drinks were also creative and interesting. The reason I didnt rate Paper Lanterns higher was the food. The dishes were tasty, but the portion sizes and the price for what you got wasnt at all worth it. The value for money just didnt seem to be there. A few examples of this were that you got half a sub instead of a full sub, or a tiny bowl of rice with a bit of meat priced at a full serving, or a very minuscule portion of dried squid as an apitizer, etc. Each of these dishes were also charged separately and it was very easy to spend a lot of money without getting full. Overall I think Paper Lanterns has a lot of potential. Once they fix the food part of their restaurant I think the place could be really great.

Shoutout to IG: nevaa_full for suggesting this place. Heard a lot about this place and finally decided to try it. The service was great. We got crepes, papaya salad and what s kitchen having . The last item we got was a delicious and flavourful soup with perfect spicy ness. We also got cocktails which were good if that s your thing. My only issue was the seating was very congested and the tables were small. Makes sense given the location but would have liked a better seating arrangement.

The friendliest staff ever!!! They talked and joked with us and every single one said goodbye when we left. One of the owners even gave us free shots! The food was fabulous. My favourite was what s the kitchen having which this week was a soup with noodles, brisket and chicken balls. The cocktails were also so fun to choose from and tasted amazing! I will definitely be back!

Everything about this place was amazing. The family owned and operated hidden speakeasy style restaurant and bar was my favorite place in Calgary so far. The food was amazing, drinks were incredible, and the Affagato with a Vietnamese twist was the perfect ending. Highly recommend!!

The drinks were delicious and the ambiance was cool. Loved the speakeasy vibe. Servers were super nice and great. But I found the food not as good as normal Vietnamese places with small portions and higher prices. I was still hungry after getting the spring rolls and the vermicelli rice bowl. So to me this place was just ok. Probably better to go just for drinks and snacks rather than full on dinner.

My gf s and I were there last night for some cocktails and appies and we were not disappointed! Fast and friendly service, delicious menu, unique but amazing cocktails and a gorgeous ambiance makes this place one of my new favourite spots in town. Huge thank you to Nhi and her awesome staff! This is neat hidden location in the middle of Chinatown. The atmosphere and decorations in the restaurant are really cool. The food tastes great but the portion sizes given its price are not ideal. The cocktails are quite refreshing and they have a good variety of drinks.

A cool, hidden place to visit. We ordered some drinks and loved the Saturn cocktail the best. Everything we ate was very tasty, small plates. I would have liked bigger portions, as the price was a bit higher in comparison to the amount of food provided. We ordered the beef carpaccio, bánh xèo, pork and pineapple stir fry, cured pork belly, smoked pork belly skewers, and pork spring rolls. My favourite was the carpaccio and skewers, but everything was really great. The service is grand. Your table is tended to by anyone working, which feels homey and social. They wont let you go without regular water refills, which I love at any place with strong cocktails. They will happily tell you the origins of the bar and the lovely people running it, which makes the experience even more singular.

Such an amazing hidden gem in Calgary! My fiancé and I rented an air BnB close by and stumbled upon this place, first without a reso but then we saw the atmosphere and got on a waiting list and we re so glad we did! Amazing cocktail bar with delicious snacks and lots of vegetarian options. Service was amazing and the prices are reasonable. We made a reservation and were glad that we did because the place filled up at one point. From the outside you wouldnt know that this speakeasy-style restaurant is there but once you find your way inside you will be transported into another world. The interior decor is spellbinding and whimsical. Overall great experience. Thank you

What am amazing gem of a place. The atmosphere is so fun without being pretentious or top quirky. The food is incredible and you can taste the love put into it. Please try the Pandan paim Killer and if you are gifted the opportunity, chat up the staff as they are friendly, knowledgable and very proud of thier achievement. We will definitely be returning and bring as many people as we safely can. Thank you

Overall very good time! The quality and flavourful dishes and unique alcoholic concoctions make up for the wait time to get a table (I failed to make a reservation on a weekend, resulting in phone/voicemail tag a few times ). The tables are situated very close together and because of the dim vibe/lighting, it s obviously difficult to snap photos of the food or even see clearly the vivid colours of Vietnamese dishes.

Totally hidden. Totally tiny. Totally special. Its not quite a tiki speakeasy, but this intimate spot is definitely playing for the same team. Do yourself a favor and sit up at the bar and get yourself their take on the Traders original 1944 mai tai. Then go for a daiquiri of the moment. You wont be disappointed. Theyll treat you right.

Unbelievable. This is the kind of place you discover a few times in your lifetime. The Mai Tais are a religious experience. The service is what service should be but so rarely is. The food manages to be both fun, authentic, and over the top delicious all at the same time. And this is one of the few places that even though it isnt trying to be one is an actual speakeasy in the way most places try way too hard to be. If youre not a little lost and maybe even a little trepidatious as you try to find the way in, its not a speakeasy. If there were 10 stars Id give them all.

This is my favorite spot on the city. Every cocktail is awesome, and the food and appies are delicious. Highly recommend the che dessert if you like Asian desserts. And the staff are just awesome.

The best food, the best drinks, and run by the nicest family. A great place for some excellent small plates, and great Tiki cocktails. Be sure to try the meatballs and the Pandan Painkiller!

We loved our cocktails. Mine was a bit expensive, but the quality matched it. The staff were amazing, loved talking with all 3 of them, probably the biggest draw for us. We also loved the chill beats music that was playing:) Food we bought 3 medium plates, it was ok, a tad greasy. We probably won t eat there again, but will try to get back for a cocktail.

Cool speakeasy in Chinatown with great cocktails and snacks. You could def have a full meal here but its more small sized plates. A few vegetarian options but mostly meat forward.

Great hidden gem of a place. You come here mainly for the drinks and the atmosphere BUT the food is definitely worth getting as well. Homestyle Viet food definitely doesnt need to cost that much but I feel for everything included (atmosphere, staff, etc..) its worthwhile. The portions are by no means super filling or of very hungry folks but it does hit the spot pretty well. Would recommend the banh xeo (comes with two crepes). Food is not oily nor overly salty. Flavoured just right and presented in a simple yet traditional sense (without the frills). There is an extensive drink list that also includes non alcoholic drinks (in house mixed and made - ginger beer is recommended). Food ranges from $5-15, which is decent for having family members of the owners work in the back to serve you their homestyle.

Hidden gem in Chinatown. Nice place to chill and enjoy some great cocktails. The skewers were great but the salmon spring roll could have used some more seasoning. Looking forward to going back to try some other things on the menu. Service was great!

Paper Lantern is a class act of a cocktail bar. The service is really great; friendly and informative, but also fun and cheerful. I d say the chemistry between the staff and the patrons is really good; the whole place has a happy feeling. The cocktail list is extensive and features riffs on classics as well as unique items and staple options as well. The food menu is great and reminds me of being back in Vietnam a few years ago. I haven t had bún xào for a very long time! I will definitely come back.

Definitely the best speakeasy in the city, from ambiance to food to drinks. Every person I bring here always says damn this is cool. Get the brancolada if you love mint!!
