3218 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T3E 0B3, Canada
Casual place with global-style decor specializing in classic Nepalese fare for dine-in or take out.
We forgot to ask our server name, he was really nice and friendly! This was first time for me, really wanted come. They have great reviews already, Review was true.
Such a great dining experience! The food is delicious and the service is exceptional. We Initially ordered enough food for an army and were kindly informed that it “may be too much for only two people”. Thankful for their advice, we decided to scale back We still ate like kings and were happily full. Cannot rave enough about this gem of a restaurant! My only regret is not coming here sooner. We will definitely be returning!
Food and service was great! We weren't sure what to get, but John was super helpful and walked us through the whole menu, keeping in mind dietary restrictions, spice preference, and everything! We tried a little bit of everything, including all three types of naan (the coconut naan was very unique!). The pork Momo was very good. I would recommend one of the curries for the most authentic and delicious experience. Overall all of the food was very very good! Even after John walked us through basically the whole menu, he checked up on us very often and refilled our waters constantly. We were interested in dessert but got too full from the rest of the delicious food!
Really great restaurant. The food was all tasty and service from John was excellent. He was super friendly and explained the menu nicely. We liked the coconut naan bread especially. The restaurant itself is pretty big, it was lively and had good ambiance.
I've wanted to come to the Himalayan for some time now. While the service was friendly and the ambiance cosy, the Massu Saag chicken and Himalayan Lamb were both flavourless. The first comment I made after trying the lamb curry was "it tasted watery". Presenting the dish using a wide plate was odd, it makes the food seem sparse. The portion was adequate, not generous though considering each curry was over $25.
Everything was delicious! Really great flavour and you can taste the quality too! Healthy food is a priority for me and this place fits that bill! Will be back! We had the lamb grill and the dhatpat lamb curry! Great flavours! The pork momo was good too!
only complaint is the price, i mean food are good, but is it really that good ? the Himalayan curry was like a 8/10, maybe a tad better than your regular 15$ butter chicken. but the service and atmosphere were impeccable.
The mango chicken was amazing!!! We also had the Lamb Dahl Baht which was an awesome introduction to multiple Nepali spices and flavors. The food is not spicy for the sake of spicey, it's all flavorful first. The Chai and Mango rice putting felt like the perfect cherry on top of it all. Our server Jon was so great at his job and did a wonderful job of creating a homey atmosphere. Definitely will be back!!
Five stars all the way! We were very impressed with the food and the service was perfect. This place is a real gem. Thanks for a lovely experience. Food
Excellent food and service. They were very accommodating and attentive to my toddler we brought with us. Almost the entire menu is gluten free. Best eggplant Ive ever had. The garlic Naan bread was that great combo of fluffy but still crispy and well flavored. Paneer stir fry was very tasty. We skipped dessert but our mango lassi/moi during the meal was already a treat. Highly recommend it. Parking is a bit annoying with the small lot but we found a nearby side street to park on. Vegetarian options: Many neat free options. Eggplant, paneer. Dietary restrictions: Almost the entire menu is gluten free. Well labelled. Kid-friendliness: Good. Accommodated my 1 and 3 year old. We brought our own snacks for them but the 1 year old liked the naan.
A really unique restaurant serving many curry, stir fry and other options with a nice ambiance. Highly recommend
Pretty much every dish is a winner, you cant go wrong anywhere. The service is great, and they are quite knowledgeable about their menu - enough to know what if gluten free and what is not. They take that (and other) dietary requirements quite seriously.
UPDATE NOVEMBER 23, 2024: It has been over 7 years since I visited this restaurant. I still have not forgiven these people for the poor treatment I received that day and that should tell you something. Maybe I will be able to forgive them in another 5 years. Maybe. Visited based on recommendation from friends at work. Made a reservation a month prior. Entered the restaurant on the date and they said they didnt have a table for us. So, what good is a month-long reservation for? Then, they gave us the worst table in the entire restaurant while walk-ins got better seats. Why? Because walk-in customers were all White. Food was decent. Some items in the menu are ridiculous. No Nepali I know (and I am one) cooks chicken with cauliflower. That is blasphemy. Waitress was nice enough but extremely poor management (with a tinge of racism, on the side, considering how we were treated). Will never ever step foot again. Originally visited in 2017. Edited the review again in 2022 and I still have not forgiven these guys for the poor service I received. Maybe I can forgive them in another 5 years. Maybe.
Jon was an excelent server, 10/10 service, so kind and welcoming it really added to our night out. The food was delicious, the platter is a definite must try, it really helped us get a better idea of what we each liked! The chicken curry ended up being my favorite out of the bunch but the butter chicken also hit the spot :)
We ve been here a few times with different group sizes and the amazing service, food and atmosphere of this place never changes. We had Jon as a server tonight and he was awesome! Very engaging and attentive to what was needed at the table. Thank you :)
This restaurant is the best in town. I went there so many times and it was always so nice. The food is good, the people are great and the atmosphere soothing. I would like to thanks the all staff but special thanks Jon for always taking good care of us. The only negative is that I couldnt bring this restaurant back in my luggage. Im going to miss you guys! Baptiste
I love the food, amazing flavors and excellent quality every time. The service is exceptional and consistent. I have brought all my friends and family here for pretty much all special occasions and they love it too! Vegetarian options: I always order the Veggie Momos and the Dal But with paneer so it s completely vegetarian and so delicious!
Its delicious. The naan is especially delicious. Chewy, well-cooked naan makes the food taste even better. The staff are so friendly that I would like to visit again I had a good time.
good experience and service with nepali cuisine and nepali ambience
The service was fantastic and the food was really flavourful.
I ve been eating here for almost 10 years: Such a great, all-round place!!
Outstanding food and outstanding service. John was our waiter tonight and treated us like we were locals. After a long trip to banff and a flight out of Calgary tomorrow, it was nice to eat some comfort food and be around great service in a warm environment. Highly recommend this restaurant if you re in the Calgary area!
We had a great meal here during our last night in Canada. The flavors, spices, and quality of the food were wonderful. Our server, Jon, was also amazing! He was funny, attentive, and honestly just a pleasure to have met. I would definitely recommend dining here to anyone in the area.
Great meal with great service. It was well worth seeking out on our way home from Banff. Perfect final meal in Canada.
Amazing food, place and staff, we love John he made as feel like home since first time we were there over 2 years ago, now we come back every time we can. Vegetarian options: Amazing veggie options , spinach dish and lentils, egg plant all is delicious.
I loved everything about this place The food - most amazing flavours I have had to date. The service was impecable and fun. The atmosphere, cozy and inviting. I will be back!
I visited The Himalayan restaurant a few days ago, and it was the first restaurant I tried in Calgary. It left me with a great first impression! The food was not only incredibly tasty but also gave me a feeling of being very healthy. The service was excellent, making the entire dining experience even better. I highly recommend trying this place if youre looking for delicious food and great service. A must-visit if youre in Calgary!
Excellent restaurant, very welcoming, very good cuisine
Delicious and atmospheric, Sanjay and John are wonderful thank you as always
The Himalayan has outstanding food, service, and atmosphere! Our family is new to Calgary and we were looking for a new go to restaurant for dine in or take out and the Himalayan is definitely it! We tried a number of different dishes, including the pork momo, chau chau chicken, lamb curry, and jomsom chicken (and more), and it was all delicious! As a family of 5, we all had a favourite dish! We can t wait to dine at the Himalayan again!
Even if you go everyday. You cant get enough of the good tasting food + superb service
Amazing service, amazing food, never fails to impress.
The best grilled lamb medium rare. Life changing. Amazing.
Delicious. Had the chicken mango curry with coconut naan. So good!
Taste was great but meat portions were very small with just naan and rice left in the end to eat them with nothing else left as dish comes with naan and rice and it s not Michelin star restaurant that needs to professionaly do that and now we are at Jerusalem shawarma to eat skewer so that we could feel full
One of my favourite restaurants. The quality of food is always delicious and consistent with top notch service.
Prices are way high for the quality of the food. Chicken Momos are very poor on texture and taste and could get negative rating. Mango paneer and rice is just ok. Chicken tofu Chow Chow is the one which deserves some stars.
We stopped in for a quick bite and I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. The food was amazing and from an area Id never sampled cuisine from, the server was great-attentive and answered our questions and the decor was great. Loved it and will go back for sure.
Everything was outstanding. Service from Jon (I believe) was remarkable and enhanced the dining experience.
Best service, staff is amazing. Food is amazing. All around great experience every time.
Excellent restaurant everything is top notch
Great little restaurant with a good ambience. Food was okay nothing, nothing worth revisiting.
Totally worth the hype!! Love their mango paneer, sounds weird but tastes amazing !! Lovely Mocktails as well :)
One of the best restaurants in Calgary. I love the Dal Bhat, which gives a good variety of dishes. Also, the tea and mango pudding is fantastic. Recently tried the Himalayan Chicken which was a great curry with fantastic naan!
John is excellent! Made us feel at home. Beyond excellent food
Great food and friendly service
Excellent service and exceptional food. Thank you for welcoming us back to our family.
This family owned and operated restaurant is our neighborhood s favorite. From a simple family meal out to a dressed up date night, it never ceases to impress. Food quality is consistent and service is always on point. Our favorite dishes are New Zealand lamb grill, Chau Chau, coconut Naan and veggie MoMo.
Absolutely delicious food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere and reasonably priced. I have been twice and both times Ive been very happy. The food is incredible and theres a lot of choice and it always comes plated beautifully. 1000% recommended.
This place was amazing. I visited last Thursday and had Jon as our server. The food was absolutely incredible but it was our server who completely elevated and made the experience wonderful. He was so helpful and did such an awesome job at explaining the dishes and checking in on our table. I can t wait to go back.
Amazing service, food and atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
Spectacular food and service. We got the lamb curry with some mango curry sauce- 10/10. We also got the New Zealand grilled lamb 9/10 and the chicken momos 9/10. The women who served us was very kind, attentive, and seemed to really enjoy her job. Overall great atmosphere and great food at a fair price.
A fantastic restaurant. Always feel welcome when we come in the door . Owner and staff are amazing . You have to check this place out Food
Great atmosphere, great food and outstanding service. The young waiters we had was such a sweetheart, so nice. Well done. Food
Went here recently for the first time and had an excellent experience. Delicious food, friendly staff, excellent and thoughtful service, and very pleasant atmosphere. Would definitely return, especially for a nice, special occasion meal.
Delicious food, first class service!!!
Loved it , thank you nepal
This restaurant was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. Located just off 17 Ave & 32 Ave SW it is tucked in a small strip mall. Parking is limited as many of the stalls are assigned to businesses but there is plenty of side street parking. Jon provided excellent service and food arrived quickly. Had the D al Bhat which is like a combo meal and includes naan, choice of a curry dish, sides, coffee/tea and mango pudding dessert. Friend had butter chicken with coconut rice. Prices are reasonable and there s a good variety of dishes. Make reservations if you are going on a Fri or Sat evening.
Absolutely great place. From the great service and super attentive and friendly waiters to the amazing food. We had some momos to start: first time we had them. And they were absolutely delicious. I had the traditional Nepali experience with a dhal Baat and I was surprised by how filling and delicious it is. The tea is just delicious. Would come back again and again and again Vegetarian options: My partner ordered a vegetarian option and it was absolutely delicious
Food was amazing and the service was great! The owner gave our group lots of free food to try and it was amazing! Even though we re from Bhutan, we felt at home with the service and the atmosphere. Thank you! Will come again and recommend to a lot of people!!!
Its our first time here and the food is amazingly excellent Vegetarian options: Veggy momo Food : 5/5 |
THIS is perhaps the one of the best, understated restaurants in Calgary. It gets crazy busy on weekends. Food is amazing, sauces are full range, crazy attention to detail & authenticity (sizzling lamb..omg!). Service is bar none! Simply one of our fav places to eat anywhere.
Havent eaten here yet but have wanted to for a long time...
I LOVE this restaurant. I go every time I visit Calgary and it never disappoints. The curries are all flavourful and delicious and the momos are on another level. I would almost go back to Calgary just for their momos! Theyre flavourful and complex and achieved without an overuse of salt. And then when the sauce is added theyre incredible. Just the right amount of contrast between flavours to give you the feelings of food synergy as animated in Disneys Ratatouille when Remy describes foods flavour enhancement when flavours are combined. 10/10 recommend. We went on a momo hunt in Toronto because I missed these flavours so much only to be greatly disappointed at how unremarkable Toronto momos (no different than just regular Chinese dumplings) are. The Himalayan set the bar astronomically high for me. And Im writing this in a period of intensely missing their momos. Also the staff is wonderful. Theyre kind, genuine and super helpful. And they do the little things that keep you going back! Our waiter John began to recognize us...as well as our affinity for momos and snuck a few extras onto our plate the last time we went! Thank you!! I cant wait to visit again!
My wife and I have eaten here well over a dozen times, and loved it every single one of those! The food is delicious, the staff is always wonderfully friendly, I really can t recommend it highly enough!
Loved the momos, it s just awesome.
Nothing Himalayan about it
I want to preface my review by saying that my husband and I have dined in the restaurant twice, and both times weve had an excellent meal, however this evening, we decided to go with take-out and were absolutely shocked at how bad the food was. We had an order of butter chicken ($24) which had 6 small pieces of chicken and awful, greasy, chunky sauce and the Chili Chicken ($24.50) again had a few small chunks of chicken and more green peppers and onions than anything else. For that price, you would expect to get a proper portion. We also had an order of Chicken Chau Chau ($21) and the noodles were dry and clumpy. This overall experience has ruined my view of the Himalayan to the point Im not sure Ill return. As a family, we chose to support this restaurant as its a local run, mom-and-pop shop, we could have easily chosen a chain, where one has come to expect a level of laziness and complacency with food, but we chose to spend our money here. For a small restaurant to be so apathetic with the food being serving to customers who are paying an exorbitant amount for their product, is shameful. In these times, where everything is already ridiculously expensive but people are CHOOSING to come to your restaurant, everything should be done to put out the best possible product without question.
Our long time favorite, we love it. Food is always amazing.
The staff are very friendly and there is a large selection of vegan & vegetarian food. I did feel underwhelmed by the food and the portion sizes. I understand inflation is hurting everyone, however it shouldnt substitute flavour. The tofu was tasty but I think it was texture vegetable protein and cost an additional $6. I really wanted to like this place, however I think I will stay home and make my own meal next time.
Excellent restaurant, great food, service, ambience. Highly recommend
Amazing food the owner is always caring your paying for quality food
These folks always do a great job.
Nice atmosphere, very good service, food is expensive for what you get in terms of quantity and flavor.
I have came across this place a few times and I wanted to try it. I saw the high ratings and reviews and thought it would be great. The food here is okay, I got the dal bhat lamb. It came with lentil curry which was okay, lamb curry which I personally didn t like and spinach lentils which I thought was good. I got chiya tea too which I liked. There is a hot sauce too that comes with the dish that was fantastic. The dish overall was fine. Garlic bread is awesome. There is also a dessert which is good too. The prices are on the higher end for what you get though. I would love to try more of their dishes if I have the chance to do so. Great service and servers.
This is a 5 star establishment! I love this little place. Ive been going on a semi-regular basis for a few years now. I am always impressed by the food but the staff also help make it an excellent dining experience. Jon in particular has provided top notch service and remembers past guests and conversations which makes me feel valued. He is wonderful. If that wasnt enough, the food is fantastic. My favourite dish is the mango paneer, I get mine spicy. Dont miss out on the momos! As a vegetarian Ive only tried the veggie and they are great. Make sure you get the hot sauce, its divine. All of the praise for this wonderful restaurant!
Simple curated menu with tons of flavour. They were able to accommodate a food allergy without jeopardizing the quality of the meal. Service was excellent and the staff are exceedingly friendly and welcoming. If you have never had Nepali food before, make this your inaugural journey. Vegetarian options: Nearly the whole menu is protein-choice with each dish so vegetarian options are available Dietary restrictions: They are not exclusively gluten free so steer away if you re celiac. However they navigated an onion allergy with ease.
Just FYI, not kid friendly under 5yrs. Especially for toddlers its not spacious seating. We had a hard time adjusting and manager was not cooperative. Food was good. Had to rush out. Kid-friendliness: Less spacious, tight spacing and manager not cooperative .
Great local spot spot for authentic Nepalese cuisine!
Excellent momos, currys and Naan. Love the lamb dishes! The service is very friendly, fun and responsive. Love the atmosphere as well. It stays busy, so make a reservation!
Amazing restaurant! Amazing food and excellent service! Highly recommended. Sanjay and his son are amazing. The service has always been the best of the best.
Wonderful dishes with great service. I had the butter chicken and my wife had the mango lamb and both dishes were sensational.
This place offers a captivating ambience with elegant decor and inviting surroundings, perfect for a memorable dining experience. However, despite the promising atmosphere, the food falls short of expectations in terms of authenticity and flavor depth. Additionally, the prices may seem high considering the overall culinary experience.
The best with addictive flavors & garlic nan bread WOW
Went with a group of 8 on a quiet evening during the week. The portions of food were deceptively large which helps with the value proposition for those not looking to spend a lot for tiny portions. If you like vegetarian options, there are plenty. The meat options are less plentiful, with chicken and lamb being the most common.
I just can t even say how truly amazing is this Resturant s food it s not only delicious, but fresh, good quality and quantity. Total value for money. Highly recommend this place. Have tried many of their dishes so far and all have been amazing. Their service and hospitality is also truly amazing. One of the best Nepalese restaurants I ve tried so far. Really loved it.
Experience the mountain range experience in Calgary Alberta Canada
All okay, not great.
Wonderful atmosphere, amazing service, delicious food and reasonable price. My wife and I went here for dinner and were impressed with appetizers, entrees and wine. Great place to experience authentic Nepali food! James was a wonderful server. Can t wait to come back with some friends
Some of the best food and service in the city! The food is consistently amazing! The setting is perfect for a business meeting, a family meal, or a nice date. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. Jon is the best server we ve ever had at a restaurant! I ve worked as a fine dining server for many years, and he still impresses me every time with his professionalism, attention to detail, and efficiency! Jon has made every one of our many visits special, is so helpful and attentive, and has an incredible memory! Tenzeng served us this visit too, and he was also very polite and helpful! 10/10 would recommend.
This is simply the best place to eat in Calgary. Top notch service and consistently amazing food. My family and I have been going here for years. Even though I moved away, whenever I visit calgary, we always drop by here for a meal. I ve never been disappointed. The dal bhat is the best!
Shout out to our servers Jon! He went above and beyond when we came in for our friends birthday!! The food was exceptional and can t thank Jon was enough for being so sweet to us! We recommend the curry s they were delicious!!
Our family comes here a lot for dinner and this review is long overdue. This is an amazing place for Nepalese food here in Calgary and overall really contributes to the diverse dining scene here in Calgary. I hope they stick around for a long time. All of the dishes are worth a try. If its your first time I would recommend Himalayan chicken, grilled lamb, fish tareko with the spicy sauce, and the chili paneer.
You re guaranteed a delightful dinner when dining here. It s always an impeccable meal and exceptional service.
Everything is so good
Got takeout. Good flavour but portions too small on some dishes. Butter chicken ($21) had 5 cubes of chicken. Mango lamb ($26) had 7 cubes of lamb. Really poor value on those dishes.
Not only was the restaurant s decor executed to perfection, the service from John was perfect down to every detail. This man understood service and knew how to communicate in a professional but charming manner. His attention to detail was seamless. The food was delicious. We had the butter chicken (medium spice) and the mango lamb (medium spiced) with their famous naan bread. I had heard about this place yearssssss ago and never had a chance to go until today. Will definitely be back. This place really brings it on all levels: atmosphere, service, flavour, quality of food and again, im a sucker for a great aesthetic. This place is beautiful. Hand carved decor from Nepal. I don t drink but I saw each cocktail carefully crafted and presented to each table. Just above and beyond. Very impressed
We love going to The Himalayan often. The place is always friendly, and they have lots of tasty vegetarian options we enjoy. The staff is amazing, and the service is excellent. The food quality is consistently great, and were never let down.
This is one of the finest restaurants I have eaten in. The venue is simply beautiful. The service is outstanding. Then there is the food. Its delicious. Even with the hottest foods the finely balanced and complex flavors come through. Its not inexpensive but you get a truly worthwhile experience. Vegetarian options: Lots. Parking: In front. Kid-friendliness: They have noodles that many children seemed to enjoy.
Nice interior, Nice server, Nice taste
A seriously underrated spot in Calgary! The Himalayan serves Nepalese cuisine which is deeply flavoured with Indian and Chinese influences. We love their momos - they re little steamed pockets of dumplings just bursting with flavour. Pork is our favourite and I love the accompanying dipping sauce though the momos hold up very well on their own so no sauce is necessary. Our favourite entree is the Poleko Grill with the New Zealand Lamb. The lamb is so tender and roasted flavour is delicious. The garlic bread is really good and always worth upgrading to. Recently I tried their coconut bread - amazing! It s got shredded coconut inside the bread but it s not overly sweet. In fact the slight sweetness is a great vessel for their sauces and curries. You can choose your spice level and if you re not sure what to order, they will absolutely walk you through the menu. The service is spectacular. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The staff greet you by name whether you re coming or going. Literally reminds me of Cheers - sometimes you just want to go where everyone knows your name.
Very good!
Really enjoyed this restaurant. Great food, friendly staff, and clean washrooms. Giving 4 stars because all of the staff were wearing face masks and I am sceptical that it was by choice.
While the atmosphere was exceptional, the meal themselves were quite pricey with our group ordering the butter chicken, the Himalayan curry and the Chau chau noodles. Three dishes are already 80+ dollars. Only the Himalayan curry was exceptional, the rest were quite mediocre and lacked flavor unfortunately. The mango rice pudding dessert was quite diluted and watered down. If you do decide to come here, come for the Himalayan curry, however would not recommend coming overall.
The food was so good.
Most amizing
Just excellent. Service is top notch. Food is great. Veggie and gluten free.
We had an amazing evening at the restaurant. Not only the food was great, the service was just over the top. Thank you Jon, our server, for a spectacular dinner.
Absolutely outstanding across the board. The food and service were both excellent.
Id give them 6 stars if I could! Food was delicious, service was wonderful, ambience was great. Tons of options as vegetarians, meat dishes are juicy and melt in your mouth. Portions were the perfect size and dessert and tea were great too!! Will definitely be back!
My girl and I enjoy travelling and trying new restaurants and experiences, and returning to our favourites. After a long week for my girl, I thought a special and relaxing night was due- so off to the Himalayan! Several of our friends have mentioned it and we have been very eager to come check it out- we were absolutely stunned! Our server Jon was fantastic- prompt, friendly and gave his favourite suggestions so we could enjoy a unwinding and relaxing dining experience. We enjoyed: pork momos, Lamb Chatpat, Lamb Himalayan curry, grilled lamb, and mango cream as well as our wine. Great wine list, and our dinners were perfectly prepared. We would like to honour Jon as his table presence and service was impeccable-a good spirited and hard working guy. We have been to hundreds of restaurants and we would comfortably rate him as one of our favourite all time. There s a reason so many regulars lined up out the door- the Himalayan is simply amazing! The talent, menu definitely contends with the likes of VIj s in Vancouver!! Thank you chef and Jon for making our night awesome! We will be back as it was sensational!!!
Not that they need yet another 5-star review, but I cant sing the praises of The Himalayan loud enough. The staff, the atmosphere, THE FOOD - all unfailingly amazing. The owners and staff knew us on sight by our second or third visit and make you feel like family when you walk in the door. The space itself is comfortable and calm and everything you want in a dining experience, and it even has a gender-neutral single-stall accessible washroom. The food. Perfect proportions (enough to take home if youre not a big eater, but youll also never leave hungry,) fantastic flavour, the menu has allergens listed out directly but the kitchen also does everything they can to ensure things are vegan and not cross-contaminated. My celiac mother-in-law can eat here without fear and they offer substitutions on things she cant have. I do take-out fairly regularly as well. This place is where I go for comfort food or if I need something I know I can trust when Ive had a long day and just need to put something delicious in my face, and also where I take people when I want to impress them. Theyve never let me down, and I will be a faithful customer until the end of my days. Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Not a limited menu by any stretch. Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten-free or vegetarian or vegan options. No peanuts are used in the restaurant though other nuts are (such as cashew.) If you tell the staff you have an allergy, they will do all they can to avoid cross-contamination (though obviously guarantees cant be made.) Wheelchair accessibility: The restaurant is in a plaza with your standard kerb ramp up onto the sidewalk area in front of the door. Tables are spaced far enough apart that you can get a wheelchair to through but you may have to ask other patrons to move if their chairs are pulled out too far from the table. There is a gender-neutral single-stall accessible washroom
Delicious food, excellent service.
Went there for MOMOS... yummy momos and restaurant is always packed. One of the best in Calgary Food
Wow. Thats all I can say. Thanks for the amazing food and service. Everything was amazing. The tap beer was crisp and fresh , my mocktail was delicious. The Momos are all theyre cracked up to be and the lamb grill is unreal Service is second to none with a lovely atmosphere. Other restaurants should take a page on their service. Five stars. You guys deserve that and more
Had such a great experience here! Very friendly staff. Ordered the butter chicken, pork momo, lamb dal bhat, garlic nan bread, coconut cake and mango rice pudding. They were all very delicious. My favourite was the butter chicken. Thank you to Jon for the amazing service. We ll be returning :)
Went for an early mothers day dinner. There were 7 of us. We ordered a bunch of food to share. Portions were too small, especially 40 dollars for the grilled lamb and 35 for the grilled paneer. Some folks had to split the lamb and cubes of paneer with each other so that the parents can have an actual cube, each. Dishes arent really meant for sharing family style. For the price, not worth the order unless youre eating the dish yourself. Otherwise, flavors were really good, everyone was happy with the quality of food and service. The eggplant and jomsom chicken was really good. Price did not reflect the portion of food at such a highly rated place. Vegetarian options: Lots of veggie and gluten free options. One reason I chose this for a family dinner.
Great cultural experience with delicious high quality food. We are so lucky to have this restaurant in our neighbourhood. Recommend 5*
It somehow matches an upscale ambience without being pretentious. I received quick, kind service. Heres what I ate and drank: -The wolf, a hazy pale ale - pineapple, passion fruit, and citrus flavours, just the right balance of hoppy and tropical -Pork Momos - the hotter sauce saved the flavour. The waitress Christine knew, she saw me being bored and knew that Id need a hotter hot sauce. And that really amplified the flavour and brought out all the flavours. The textures were perfect - spongey soft dumpling skin with incredibly tender pork filling supported by cilantro, spices, garlic, onion. -chatpat lamb curry with saffron rice and garlic naan (green pepper, tomato, onion) - naan was a mix of crisp on the outside and butter soft silk on the inside. The curry was hot, fragrant, aromatic, with very simple ingredients used in a tomato base so well. The lamb was soft, tender and the lamb flavour hits you at the end of that profile that it doesnt overpower you with the meat sweats. The saffron rice adds sweetness and the pickled carrot adds the extra dash of freshness. I was first worried the rice was underseasoned and unnecessary. But then I quickly realized thats not what its for. Saffron rice adds such a depth of sweetness and intensifies your experience. 9/10 - the only recommendation? Get a hotter sauce, the whole experience is better for it.
We visited here for dinner and loved it! The plate with curry and Dahl was great, and the oven baked(fries?) fish was great too.
First time here, although Ive heard a lot about it. Food was delicious and did not disappoint. Staff were absolutely lovely, and when my friend commented on the copper bowls & mugs and asked where to get them, they gifted one to him. He was absolutely gob-smacked and delighted! Definitely coming back.
Love this restaurant! The atmosphere is very relaxed, the food is amazing, and service is above and beyond. This is my go-to place for dinner.
Ordered the pork momo and bhat dal with lamb. Nice delicious meal in a clean casual place to eat.
Nice presentation and delicious food
Tastiest meal I ve had in Calgary. The dumplings lived up to the hype. Loved the curry and chili chicken. Our server Christina was excellent: extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and patient. Would definitely go back.
Decided to try this place out since it is highly recommended, and it was well worth it. My wife and I arrived early for a reservation, our table was not ready yet, so we sat at the bar, and the skilled bartender offered us a complimentary glass of Prosecco for the wait. The service at this establishment is hands-down fantastic! The chicken Momos, and the chilli chicken is a must order for every time you go, we also had the lamb grill which was to die for. Also the Casava Cake and Rice pudding is delicious. The ambiance is cosy and romantic and I will definitely be back again!
Never expected how great this restaurant. Since Ive been here once, couldnt stop thinking the next visit lol Even my friend is not a huge fan of lamb, he really loved it with those grilled veggies it was just perfect ! Strongly recommend for curry beginners as well :)
This is a fantastic place, the food was amazing. The naan was light and crispy, rice light and the mango curry was to die for. Definitely pay this place a visit you will not regret it.
Food tastes very good and the service is efficient. The atmosphere is calming and suitable for family and friends gatherings. They do take sometime to prepare the food but its definitely worth it. We had to call 3 days in advance to book for Friday so I would definitely recommend booking beforehand. Overall, a good experience and I would definitely come back again. Vegetarian options: There are different vegan and Gluten free options
Momo appetizer Lamb grill (mild with hot sauce on the side) Chili Paneer Chicken Chatpat Cassava Cake Made for an absolutely exquisite meal with a medley of fusion flavors.
This is such an amazing place! The food was the best food I have had in a long time, coconut rice . But the service was even better our server was so great with our large group. Made great suggestions for us. Will be back 100%
Amazing food and service. My favorite spot in calgary!
Went with party of 4 including two young children. Had an amazing experience. The food is excellent and the service superb. James in particular was very accommodating. Can t wait to go back. Try the chicken grill and the paneer grill. Both amazing.
Tasty food and great service made for a lovely dinner here, the place looks unassuming from the outside but has a nice ambience and cozy vibe. Highly recommend the grilled lamb that comes with a nice dal bhat. The lamb along with an order of chicken momo served 2 people well. Mango rice pudding was a sweet ending to the meal. Will definitely be back when we re in Calgary!
This restaurant is unassuming but the atmosphere, service, and variety of food in outstanding! The flavours are extremely fresh, good sized portions and delicious naan bread. The staff are extremely friendly and in great spirits. They ve even gotten to know us by our first names.
I love The Himalayan restaurant in Calgary. This is where we would always bring our friends and family for dinner. I love all the lamb menu! Come and check out this restaurant! The service is also superb! The server who attended to us recently was so friendly and gave us a fantastic service!
This restaurant is an absolute must stop if you are in Calgary. Make sure you make a reservation as they were very busy, even on a Thursday. I am Indian and live in Los Angeles, and I wish I had South Indian food options as amazing as The Himalayan available to me. Will definitely be back next time Im in Calgary. Vegetarian options: Mango Paneer is delicious!
A top tier spot in Calgary with wonderful food and staff! The restaurant was full on a Thursday evening in July, which goes to show how popular it is. We made reservations a couple of weeks before on their website as this was our last night in Calgary. The mango paneer at medium spice was flavorful and not too spicy! The vegetable stir fry at medium spice was also delicious! Our server was attentive and personable. He was awesome! Definitely recommend to anyone visiting Calgary or locals looking to try something new!
the exorbitant price of Food than expected.completely disappointed
Best food, friendly, helpfull staff. This is a real gem. Love the ambience. Food
Delicious eggplant curry , mango paneer and naan. Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options Kid-friendliness: Nice staff.
This was our first meal in Calgary and it did not disappoint. We hadn t booked but they still squeezed us in on a busy Sunday night. Delicious curry and stir fry with plenty of naan. Really friendly staff and some nice looking cocktails even though I didn t try them.
This is very nice restaurant to visit with family or friends. The quality of food is good and service is so good too. Food tastes amazing, I loved this place and definitely recommended it. Dont forget to reserve the table before.
Best dining experience I have had in a long time. Don t write reviews often but it was so good that I had to come on here to rave about this place. Come here and you will not be disappointed!!
Our server was a caring young man. He checked on us regularly and provided detailed information regarding each dish. We really liked the service and everything else
Fantastic first experience at this highly recommended spot. Everything was so flavorful and the server/staff we re all very kind and helpful with the menu. Favorite dish was the grilled lamb (med spice). The Nepali curry (hot spice) sauce was bomb too. Worth noting that the spice levels are less than an Indian restaurant. If you like spice definitely get hot. Coconut rice is worth the upgrade too! I will definitely be recommending this place to others.
Everything here is 100 percent from the food , service , I definitely recommend this place to everyone
The best food I ve ever had! Great, high quality food, friendly staff and beautiful cozy place! I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. Food
Love this restaurant, hidden gem in Calgary. Warm ambience with beautiful decor. All staff are welcoming and excellent service. Naan bread and deserts are a must try.
8 on 10 .... Awesome food , service and atmosphere all are excellent
Very bad quality of food. Himalayan lamb not worth it. Dry and hard meat over sweet curry. First experience not good sadly. Had high hopes.
Great food!
Beautiful place and amazing service. Definitely worth trying. They even got me a free dessert for my birthday, it was a total surprise and they made me so happy. Thank you so much for your kindness. As for the food: The garlic naan was beautiful. And it goes well with everything. Highly recommended! The grilled chicken (which I forgot its name) was really nice and had a smoky taste. The butter shrimp was AMAZING. It just needs more salt because the rice is bland. I tried both the saffron rice and coconut rice. As for the saffron rice, it was tasteless, but I am sure if they added a little more salt it would be really good. Other than that it was good and cooked perfectly. The coconut rice had shredded coconut in it and it s giving it a sweet taste. It is weird in the beginning but you ll get used to it. The rice itself was still bland but the sweetness will cover for that. This rice combined with the sides gave them a whole different taste. I personally liked trying it but I think it was kind of too sweet. Overall, very pleasant experience. Thank you so much!!
Outstanding experience at Himalayan our server John was extremely helpful recommended some great food, would love to go back
My friend insisted we eat here. Looked at the menu online before visiting and was a bit leary about it. But after eating here I can honestly say that I was blown away, the food is amazing, service was excellent and great atmosphere. I can now say I am looking forward to coming back. The only negative... parking.
Great atmosphere and delicious food! We both had the dal bhat (the paneer and lamb options), which comes with three small (though still quite substantial) bowls full of tasty and perfectly spiced parings for the included rice and naan! The dal bhat option also included refillable tea or coffee (we had the chiya - sooo good!), and a mango rice pudding for dessert! We also had the pork momo for an appetizer, which was a perfect appy for two people to share and came with a nice spiced (but mild) dip. The staff were super friendly and knew the menu extremely well - made our experience there so much better! Vegetarian options: Quite a few vegetarian options - paneer dal bhat specifically was fantastic! Kid-friendliness: When you click to reserve seating on their site, they ask specifically if you require high chairs and seem to have them on hand to provide for drop ins! Though didn t see a kids specific menu, there is a huge selection of items and most of the food you can request to be spiced mildly to allow for them to have a good experience. It does seem a bit more for adult dining though. Wheelchair accessibility: Quite accessible, no steps up or down to come in, and a good amount of space between tables and aisles.
Very nice staff, awesome environment, and delicious food. Highly recommend the curries. My favorite was the Basa curry.
Food wasnt for me, but Id recommend you trying it and deciding for yourself.
Outstanding dinner at The Himalayan - will definitely return. Terrific service and food. Thank you!
The lamb was delicious, the server was very attentive and accommodating. We couldnt finish our meal and he packed up the curry and even added some rice to take with us for a snack the next day. The place was packed even on a Thursday, make a reservation if you decide to come here.
Best food and Service in Calgary. Whole my family is coming here for years and taste , service and prices do not change. Just it is getting better and better. Great food and People. Highly recommend this family owned restaurant. To add another layer.I took my VP here 2 weeks ago. Again outstanding service and food. They deliver every time. Feels like home. Thank you
Gem of a restaurant. Food is incredible and is good for a variety of diners - GF, Vegetarian, and Meat eaters can all find delectable dishes to enjoy. Usually pretty full, as it should be for the quality! Jon is the best server Ive ever had the pleasure to meet. Dietary restrictions: Menu is clearly labeled with GF/Veg options
This was a superb experience. The food is delicious and the service amazing. Would love to visit again when in Calgary.
A bit pricey but worth it.
Great little place, seems like it is maybe family run. Super friendly servers, great food, high quality, fair price! Cant wait to come back!
Great customer service along with delicious food. Excellent dinning experience
Friendly service, incredible food, and great atmosphere. All in all a great experience, I will definitely be back!
Second time eating here, and loved it just as much as the first time! Family owned and you can tell just how much care and effort they put into their restaurant. Highly recommend 10/10!!
Mango chicken was devine. The garlic Naan amazing and everyone was welcoming Awesome place Food : 5/5
This place never disappoints! They offer great food, great atmosphere, and truly the best service. The staff are so friendly and you can tell they work hard to make everyone happy.
Gotta try the coconut naan! It is amazing!
Prompt service. Great selections for those with dietary restrictions. Good food. It has been a full house everytime weve went and the space is designed well but there is not a lot of extra wiggle room. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian and vegan options.
Food are tasty, staff are friendly with excellent service.
Great food and great service. Definitely will come to enjoy the food again.
Great family friendly atmosphere with great food and service
Nice food, too.
I don t understand the rave reviews for this place. I had a 3-course meal there with a friend and it was nothing to write home about. The place was packed when I was there on a Friday night and looking around at the clientele, I can tell where the reviews come from. These are people that have never tasted authentic Nepali food and probably have the spice tolerance levels of an ant. I asked for the spiciest they could make my food and it caused barely a blimp on my radar. The curries were bland and the fried veggies hard and unappetizing. The only good dish was the cassava cake.
Very friendly and pleasant service staff. Great food with value for money. Loved the ambience.
Amazing service, really went out of their way to make our anniversary special. Thank you!!!
I love this place! The staff was incredibly friendly and the food was fantastic. The grilled lamb was absolutely perfect. Ill definitely be going back.
Been wanting to eat here for awhile and finally made time on Oct 29. It was amazing! The food was fresh and delicious. Warm, comforting flavours and the bread was some of the best I ve had! The guava margarita was a sunny reminder of the tropics. But the service .that was impeccable! Super friendly and knowledgeable. They went over and above to make our experience unforgettable! Genuinely terrific people!
Nice paintings of the Himalayas with old village homes. Tibetan prayer flags at the front door is a nice touch! I ordered Lamb chappat or whatever that was called. Too sweet, full of cream and sugar, and definitely not Aunthentically Nepalese. Couldnt justify the cost of 26$ for not so good food. I liked the fermented cabbage pickle though. But truly disappointed with the Lamb dish, as I was here because I missed authentic Nepali food.
The chef knows what they are doing. All proteins were perfectly cooked. The grilled lamb was tender, Momos were juicy. Service was absolutely top notch from enthusiastic greeting to checking in and proactively bringing us hot sauce as they knew we probably would like it. So different from some other places that when you come in you feel like a burden because maybe the server has been busy or they are swamped (understandable but highlights that the staff here keeps a high level of professionalism and attitude which is all part of the experience). Also the bathroom was spotless and smelled nice, which is always good. Though it is priced a bit higher than my normal choices, the value is definitely there. Certainly you can share 3 dishes among 2 couples (we took 3 dishes and struggled to finish with 3 of us but were able to manage). You must try the grilled lamb. It was a highlight. Order it medium or medium rare. So good. One point to mention is that the naan and rice that come with the dishes wasn t enough for us, it s a great opportunity to try the coconut naan which was so tasty. It has fennel and a coconut paste which walks the line between sweet and savoury. Desert was good as well and I recommend trying the coconut cake which has similar texture to Japanese mochi. This spot will make any occasion a special one, I ll be back very soon with my family.
Good food, great tastes, mildly spicy actually means mild here. The dal-bhaat is really a thali with limited choices and small portions. The rice portions accompanying the curries are especially small. Food : 5/5
We had such a great experience for dinner! The food is delicious and so fresh! Our server was amazing as we just wanted to try a new restaurant with different food than what we usually have and we definitely had that. Our server was so helpful and guided us making great meal choices! So happy we went there, restaurant and staff are so welcoming, thanks for everything!
Absolutely amazing dining experience. The service was amazing, they make you feel like you are the most important person there. Food is amazingly good and the food is way above anything else. We had an amazing experience and it confirmed why it s one of my favourite places to dine at. Thank you :)
Absolutely loved this place. While the food is amazing and flavourful, the service really stands out in this one. Everyone greets you so nicely. The servers are friendly and caring. The monos are so good.
I had a delicious birthday dinner! It was our first time there and we appreciated the new flavors. The staff was busy but always attentive. I was treated to a very artistically decorated birthday cassava cake. It was a very nice evening.
Really good restaurant. Good food great service and a very nice atmosphere and dining experience. Didnt get a five on the food because the lamb was tough and the vegetable dish was mostly disproportionately onions. But flavours were great. Recommend.
Great place for a nice dinner! Great ambiance and the food is beyond excellent!
great food 10/10, very pretty 10/10; literally the best service my friends and I have ever had 100/10
How does this place not have a Michelin star by now
