Simmons Building, 618 Confluence Way SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0G1, Canada
Located in East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and Top Chef chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. One of Canadas best restaurants partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. Charbar restaurant features cuts of ultra-dry aged Alberta beef and an ocean wise seafood raw bar, that spills out onto the open air riverfront patios with views of the bow river. At its heart is a custom-made Argentine wood-fired grill honouring the art of asado and the culinary inspirations of Spain and Italy.
Our second time coming here; food, drinks and service were amazing. We had the lamb and the grass fed beef as mains, would recommend!
We had our wedding upstairs at Charbar! It was absolutely magical. The staff and events team were beyond helpful during the planning process and for the entire day of the wedding as well. All staff were so extremely friendly and accommodating to all of our needs. Everything ran so smoothly. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, and we would choose to have our wedding there over and over again! We highly recommend it!!
Exceptional. Set in a heritage building in Calgary's East District, this restaurant served exceptional Albertan steak. It is hard to get a good char on the outside whilst still being tender but this was the best steak I've had in years. Great staff, atmosphere and fast service. It couldn't have been a better setting.
I ordered burgers twice, and while they were made with quality ingredients, they could have been juicier. The fries and salads were fresh, and the non-alcoholic cocktails were excellent with authentic flavors. We sat near the open kitchen and saw the chef—he was professional and kind.
We were just heading back from a nearby dog park when we saw the place and decided to stop in for a drink. The patio is dog friendly, and has a great atmosphere on a warm, sunny day like this one. Our server almost instantly offered to get a bowl of water for our puppy. Great gesture. Thanks! Always pleased to see a menu with non alcoholic options that have actually had a bit of thought put into them. The margins are incredible so any place that is still late to this party is missing out. They have a few good ones on this menu and we both went with the Pineapple Guava mule. Excellent drink! We were there long enough that we decided to try some food. We went with a pizza. It seems the crust is in collaboration with Connie & John’s pizza and done Fugazza style (pizza al molde). Pretty solid crust. Traditionally, ham is a stable ingredient on this style in Argentina. The pizza we received had ham as a topping. The menu listed it as prosciutto cotto for some reason. Italian words look great on a menu I suppose. Call it Prosciutto Cotto Cubetti if you want to be really fancy haha. At that price point, I think a sprinkle of a fresh herb rather than some dried oregano could elevate the dish considerably. A lot more photogenic as well. Overall more than pleased with this place. Will have to go back and try dinner there sometime. Thanks, team!
Awesome atmosphere and amazing service! Was disappointed about not cooking 2 of our steaks properly. Regardless they took it off the bill and gave us a round of drinks and dessert on the house. Would definitely come back and try their other dishes. Their fried calamari was nice as well at the lamb pastrami. The passionfruit guava mule was amazing as well as their selection of fruity/sour beers.
We really like how the restaurant looks inside! We tried their lunch special for the YYC Food & Drinks Exp for $35. I really liked the salad. It was my first time trying beef fat fries and it does have a certain aftertaste. But if you eat it with ketchup it’s not that noticeable. Added a little bit of salt on the steak and it was very good! For more food content follow me @yummy.yyc on Instagram and TikTok!
The food and drinks were amazing! We did not have a single bad bite. It is a bit more expensive than your regular restaurant but it is worth it. Will definitely come back. A must try is the provoleta! Add an extra piece of bread. The calamari was absolutely tasty and refreshing! The steak was cooked to perfection and the side of squash was the perfect compliment to it. Will was our server and he was amazing!
amazing dinner experience. it was a slower tuesday when i went. the server was attentive and professional. it has been awhile since i have had service worth talking about. food was exactly as ordered. we will be back. A++ Food
Incredible atmosphere, food, and staff! Highly recommend
Great steaks, amazing atmosphere My fav restaurant in the city Food
Fantastic. Great staff, great location.
Had a great experience here for dinner. Our server was so friendly, very professional, and made us feel welcome from the start. My partner is gluten-free, and their entire menu (except two items) are gluten-free. Knowing they are extremely cautious with it gave us a sense of comfort that my partner wasnt going to be worried about cross-contamination. Made the night even better. We had the brussel sprouts and chorizo to start and shared a gluten-free pizza as our main. Everything thing was top-notch. Highly recommend!!! Dietary restrictions: Celiac and fin fish
Love the atmosphere of this place. Ordered the margherita pizza and it was delicious!
Found this gem while searching for gluten free food online, hands down the best gluten free pizza I ve had in a very long time. The crust was so good, it was perfectly cooked (very rare to find in a gluten free pizza) and the flavour was even better. The none gluten free food was also delicious and the service was amazing. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We will 100% be back.
Great supper with the family tonight! Would recommend this place!
I got married at CharBar on September 21st 2024. Guest count was 59. We did the ceremony and reception in the North Room. CharBar absolutely blew everything out of the water. Melissa and Luke were fantastic the day of the the wedding. They went above and beyond, professional and had great communication. Everything went so smoothly, and it was very classy venue. exposed brick and wood, very rustic vibe. Anyone who wants this kind of vibe for the wedding and has a smaller guest list I HIGHLY recommend CharBar. Very good bang for your buck, prices are very reasonable for what service you get!! Couldnt be happier! Dietary restrictions: I am dairy free, other guests had other dairy restrictions and they were very accommodating
The quality of the meat here is unmatched. Too bad it isnt cooked to your liking (asked for rare and ended up with medium), which is definitely something that would need to improve especially for the price tag. Great service and nice atmosphere. Overall a nice experience. Would come back of I ever come back to Calgary.
I ve moved back into the area so I thought I d come visit this place because they usually have very good food. I was September 25, 2024. The server was extremely not attentive, even when we ve asked for a couple questions kept on walking away. It was extremely condescending when I asked a couple questions about the menu We place the order we left there, and I paid him and he received his tip I m not really sure Why the server is working in a nice place like this and is extremely unprofessional and so condescending I ve never gone back and I ll never ever go back I hope he s happy with my tip because he did receive 20% but they lost my business
Delicious food, one of the best steaks Ive had. Chicago style is the way to go! And yummy cocktails as well. Our server was also very friendly and had good recommendations
Great food, and solid atmosphere. I cant wait to go back next time Im in Calgary!
We had our wedding reception on the roof top patio this past weekend and the team at Charbar exceeded our wildest expectations. The food was incredible, Moira at charbar was always so enthusiastic and quick to reply to our questions. They made the planning process incredibly easy and they were so helpful with things like leaving flowers and decorations there the day of the event. The bartenders and staff working the night of, were so much fun and made all our guests feel welcome! I could not recommend a better venue for a private function!
Server was great, pizza was meh, for 38 bucks you can find better elsewhere.
Food and service is top notch. Try the ceviche, scallops and grilled asparagus.
Our server, Lane really went above and beyond in making my partners birthday special. She was especially attentive and just a genuinely lovely human. Food was incredible and we really enjoyed our time. Thank you to the crew at Charbar!
I hosted an event for a girlfriend s bridal shower, and the whole experience was excellent. The event team went above and beyond to ensure that everything was planned to the detail. Working with Moira was also a great experience. She ensured that all of our requests were tended to. The menu was perfectly suited for our group and it was cooked to perfection. The service was prompt, and our servers were attentive to our needs.
Highly recommend! I have been to Charbar for a wedding, for a bachelorette dinner as well as just out for dinner with friends and I have never left disappointed. The food is delicious and the servers have always been friendly and genuine when asked about their favourite menu items. Of the variety of dishes I have tried, they have all been tasty and flavourful.
Very nice place and tasty.
Service was excellent. Very attentive but not overbearing. The food is delicious, flavourful and the portions were generous. The atmosphere can t be beat by the river. Highly recommend.
Superb food choices. Non standard fare was enjoyable.
Drinks were fantastic. Food took a LONG time to come out. Steak was over cooked ordered a medium rare and got a medium well+ overall disappointing not worth the price
Table was wonky and rocked . Waited never smiled, but he always kept the water glass full . food was pretty good. The lamp pastrami tastes like well done steak was not good. Had steak with butter knives to cut it .
Dry and tasteless steak! Add that at the top of a Shady indoor decoration !
My wife and I had our wedding at Charbar, and we couldn t be happier with our choice. As many people know, planning a wedding can be incredibly stressful, but Melissa (Sales & Events Manager), and her team made the process much easier. Melissa went above and beyond our expectations, creating a stunning donut wall and dessert display that our guests will be talking about for years to come. The food was delicious, and the broccoli caesar salad starter was a fan favourite. One of the great features of Charbar is that you can hold the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all at the same venue. According to TikTok trends, this is exactly what guests want. The rooftop also allows for a beautiful ceremony overlooking the Bow River. Ultimately, it s the staff at Charbar that sets it apart from other venues in Calgary. Melissa and her down-to-earth team created a relaxed, accountable, and friendly atmosphere that made our wedding truly special. We highly recommend booking your wedding or other events at Charbar you won t be disappointed! Thank you, Melissa and the Charbar team, for everything. Greg & Sarah
We were disappointed with our dining experience at Char Bar. The food was very overpriced, the waiter was less than attentive and on the dismissive side when I tried to find out if there were dishes that did not have garlic (food sensitivity), and there was a wedding on the second floor that made it impossible to hear what our dinner companions were saying. We will not go back.
Our daughter and new husband just had their wedding at Charbar. The staff were very efficient, on time, and the entire staff worked hard to help make her day beautiful. we had alot of personal items around but all was safe in their hands. thank you for all that was done for us and made the day beyond her expectations.
The steaks are excellent!
I recently had my wedding at Charbar and I am SO glad I did. It could not have been anymore perfect. The venue itself is beautiful, the food was incredible, the staff was amazing. And I want to give a HUGE thank you to Melissa for answering all my questions, figuring things out on the fly to make sure my day went smoothly and for being so organized and soooo much more. Because of her and many people I have 0 stress and worry all day. I am so grateful for everyone s help at Charbar. It was truly a magical day. Thank you!!!!
I wanted to go somewhere special for my birthday (not the usual chain) so I selected this place. The food was really good but the service was disinterested and mediocre. The waiter kept calling me miss. Im definitely not 12 years old anymore... We ordered a bottle of wine and there was only one wine glass, so we poured wine into a water glass. He started to pour more water into it (logical) but he couldnt make the leap to think to bring us another wine glass? Parking: Make sure you end your parking at the city lot, otherwise they charge you for another day!
Recently organized a business dinner at charbar and it was a great success. From the planning with Moira to the service and the great food, would highly recommend! Thanks for an enjoyable evening.
Overall, a very good experience. The appetizers were fantastic, we had the Corn Ribs, Cabbage and Beef Tongue. For our main course we had the Pork chop, Lamb shank and the N.Y. strip loin. Everything was cooked perfectly. The only downside was the desserts unfortunately. They were tasty, but the tres leches cake was a bit dry and the cheese cake was a bit too avant-garde as the waiter described it. Our server did an amazing job with our allergies and he took his time with us even though he was busy with many other tables. Dietary restrictions: Very good with Celiac and other allergies
This is first restaurant i have seen to have a pin to use washroom for public just so cheap
We came to Charbar as we wanted to have brunch on the rooftop. The manager of the place was kind of rude and told us there was no shade on the rooftop (there was) and that they had reservations (by the time we left, there were still lots of empty tables). He also seemed to treat the staff poorly. This review would ve been two stars but our rooftop server, Damon, who looks like Flynn Rider from Tangled, saved the day. Five stars for his service and personality. If we go back, it ll be for Damon.
Solhail and Boris absolutely set the standard for what service should be. Cannot wait to come back!
Did not deserve the price. Only the fresh oysters were good. We should have chosen Lulu Bar instead.
Delicious dinner excellent Tenderloin enjoyed it very much.
I stopped by after a bike ride w regular street clothes (first time inside the Simmons Building) and no one would even acknowledge me at the front counter. Wasn t the best impression so I unfortunately left, I ll have to throw a suit on next time I guess haha.
Superb location. We had a small appetizer and a drink. Both were excellent. Also nice to enjoy the shade and a little breeze of the air conditioning. Will come back. Parking: Street parking and cheap parking lot nearby
Huge shout out to Laine, Moira, Jacob and Alex for all your help with our special afternoon - all that aside professional staff, great cocktails and delicious food in a dreeeaaaamy space, will be returning again at some point this summer! Food
I have tried Ultra-aged stake and burger here both were very delicious and juicy. We had asked for older stakes and we got 140 days. Highly recommended the Burger if you re a fan of traditional burger.
I think if you look at the pictures they speak for themselves but let s speak nevertheless . We had two pork chop dishes at our table and they both came at completely different temperatures ( as you can see one is clearly medium and one is well well done) .the steak which ordered medium came with an extra piece of well done leather as you can see in the picture finally the burger which looked pretty great if you ask me was also extremely well done and dry and though I had high hopes for the beef fat fries, they simply tasted like your run of the mill grocery store brand.
had a lovely snack with cocktails tonight. our server was exceptional. was trying to double check what cocktails we had online and the menus are not updated yet eeee. had a wonderful time though :)
The avocado was rotten, sent it back and sent me more rotten avocado. Food otherwise wasn t bad but not impressed.
The food was not consistent we had 2 rib plates and they both were presented differently even though it was the same order and also one was dry and the other ok. The plates were disappointing for main course as it did not have enough substance for the price. Honestly we had tastier steaks moist as ever at other places for $25. We also had 3 orders of burger and 2 if them were dry not moist at all This restaurant needs to train their cooks to be consistent and take their time when cooking we paid a lot of money as we were a big party We were disappointed
Expensive with a bad mignonette, tasted mostly like olive oil and not acidic enough for oysters.
I had a few coworkers visiting Calgary and booked a reservation for 8 people at Charbar. The restaurant called me the day before a said that would be an auto gratuity of 20% and that they would only charge to 1 bill . I get the auto gratuity (although it is more than the typical 18%) but not allowing to separate the bill for a table of 8 is unacceptable. I had to cancel and find a new venue on short notice. Thanks Charbar.
Portions compared to price were some what small but delicious nonetheless. Service was great and they were very accommodating and kind when we asked to move to the patio. A good experience overall.
Limited and cryptic menu- always found it tasteless unexpected food for filthy amounts on the bill. Also Wish they would do something about their Men s bathroom - dunno about the Women s!!! Stinky and old skool bathroom - and we gotta touch all the door handles and no paper towels. The first urinal looks exactly the same with the same dark patch in the same place, and stinking for the past 3yrs I ve been coming here - pre- and post- Covid. WTH? Can t they at least change that dirty patch or get some professional cleaners in the bathrooms to refresh it a bit for the stupid prices they charge!!?
Burger wasnt anything special. Whoever salted the fries doesnt have taste buds.
on Saturday night we came to your restaurant for early Fathers Day celebration, and none of us left this place happy. from waiteres attitude to over price of food. what can i say it will be first and last time we ever come to this restaurant. if i have to spend over $300,and do not get even get respect from people who is working there, why i have to put my money in the garbage, i will go some where else.
As an Argentinian, I highly recommend this place. I ordered the empanadas and the Gaucho burger and both items were excellent. I would also like to highlight the service. Authentic Argentine restaurant to enjoy some flavors of Buebos Aires.
ate there this weekend, the food was great and came out quickly. fantastic service, Mark was the server, he was extremely personable and attentive. really impressed. i highly recommend the argentinian shrimp!
Overpriced for what the food offers
Our program held Volunteer Appreciation event at the Charbar. The staff was very helpful in guiding us through the process of planning the event and very creative in suggesting the choices that were affordable for our budget. The event was great, everyone enjoyed the quality of the food and the interesting choices. Presentation was great and the servers were very welcoming. Vegetarian options: There was great selection of vegetarian choices. Dietary restrictions: They were very accommodating to find different options.
Food taste great! Too expensive for the portions, with what I spend I would ve gone to HY s have ing better food portions and top of the line atmosphere! Food was 90 minutes late since the moment we ordered! We order 2 steaks and. A salad, how hard is to cook and prepare. Restaurant was busy but not crazy! I would me Berber get back again!
Very unique and comfortable environment. Highly recommend.
The vintage building, the sensational food, the scrumptious drinks, and the phantasmagorical service all make Charbar special. If you get a chance to get up on that rooftop patio, it is a complete game changer. In short, Charbar is charming. Get down there if you like some of the best the calgary culinary scene has to offer.
Excellent food and friendly, attentive service in casual atmosphere.
Lighting is way too bright for evening dinners.
Went to charbar. Had a amazing dinner. Great food and drinks!
Food was bland with dismal service. Definitely not worth the price. There are far better options in the city at this price point.
Ordered a medium rare steak. Also ordered shrimp for my 2 year old. Wife ordered fish. The fish was tiny, almost non-existent. The shrimp was full uncut shrimp with the faces and legs, this is fine but at least say something when a 2 year old orders this. The steak was well done. They missed the asparagus that we ordered. It took more than one hour from ordering to get all our food.
I found Charbar on a recent business trip to Calgary. It was a very comfortable relaxed atmosphere. We tried several items on the menu and it did not disappoint. The service was absolutely exceptional! We will definitely be going back!
We did the set brunch menu from the YYC Expo event. The yogurt parfait was delicious but on the tiny side and I hope the main menu version is larger. Ham and eggs Benedict also nothing technically wrong but quite plain and bland for a restaurant of this caliber. The eggplant Benedict was delicious and my favourite of the two. The chocolate torte was rich, creamy, and just the right amount to finish off the meal. Overall their brunch menu is okay.
We visited for my wifes birthday and while a bit pricey, the food and atmosphere are top notch. The steaks we ordered (fillet and NY) were tender and cooked to perfection. Love the Argentinian fare as well. Kid-friendliness: Had a kids menu, but only 2 options.
Enjoyed family dinner in this beautiful restaurant. Our server Souhail was so personable and attentive. And the food, well, lets just say my husband who struggles with vegetables had second servings of the eggplant and squash dishes! Will definitely return!
Went for dinner. Have nothing but good things to say. Found the steaks to have a more of a smoke flavour this time which was amazing for me. Even the charred bread had a bit of a smoke flavour. The sides were delicious, can never go wrong with the ceviche and avocado spread. Service was amazing, staff was very friendly. Over the years, this place has been one fo my favourite spots in Calgary. They also make some pretty fine pisco sours. Vegetarian options: Side dishes could be an entree themselves. Parking: Currently construction going on the street but a 1min walk to a parking lot with plenty of space.
Under prepared.... Couldnt finish the meal
The cocktails were excellent and overall the food was pretty good with the standout dish being the blistered provoleta cheese with chimichurri. My wife really enjoyed her steak as it was cooked perfectly rare for her. My pork steak was just okay. The fires were super fresh and seasoned well. We had an unfortunate misunderstanding with our server that really threw a wrench in the enjoyment but the restaurant cleared up the confusion afterwards. I will also add that the chair I sat in was easily the most uncomfortable chair I have experienced at any restaurant. Overall a decent experience but not a destination I would purposefully seek out in the future.
Very expensive for not-so-special menu. Everything is a la carte - $56 (8oz) steak doesn t come with any sides. The service is slow and not friendly. I will never go back and will not recommend to anyone.
Came here for a late Valentines dinner and had a lovely time thanks to our server, Mark, who was super friendly and helpful. The rustic atmosphere and dark ambient lighting was *chefs kiss* with plenty of seating options available, including an upstairs area. Upon recommendation, we tried their blistered provoleta, tableside ceviche, and the New York strip steak. Both our entrees were so delicious; the steak was juicy and cooked to perfection while the ceviche (my first time trying) was fresh, tart and quite filling. The side of fries were also some of the best Ive had in terms of crisp factor. My only complaint was with the provoleta appetizer, an apparent bestseller - even though the flavor profile was top notch with the charred lemon and chimichurri, the cheese was just way too chewy and hard to bite into, especially with the super crispy sourdough bread that already destroys the roof of your mouth. Would also have liked to have some veggies included alongside the steak considering the price. But overall, still had a fantastic time eating out here and they certainly lived up to their name because I smelled like a bonfire after coming home lmao.
Fries were so good my favourite thing everything else tasted good. I didn t not love the tres leches. If you like dessert that aren t that sweet you might really like it. Service is amazing!
Great food, Awesome service. A bit pricey though
Always a delicious experience. Lamb shanks to die for, and the desserts - cant go wrong. Tonight, we were served by Solheil, and that turned a good dining experience into an exceptional evening. Thank you! Food : 5/5 |
Had a disappointing experience and felt mislead coming to charbar today. It took over 10 minutes from after we were seated to be given water which should have been the first red flag. We came for the Lunch menu for the YYC EXP but they told us that lunch does not start until 3:00PM which was not disclosed on any of their socials (website or instagram). Since we already made the trip, we decided to give it a chance and go ahead with the $35 brunch menu but I honestly wish we would have just left. We did not get our main dish for over an hour, our reservation was at noon and we did not see our main dish until 1:07PM. It felt like the business offered an appealing lunch menu to attract people to book a reservation to be served a low cost brunch instead (they just gave us some yogurt with fruit/granola, benedict with paper thin ham with a whole bunch of potato wedges and dessert was an overly sweet chocolate brownie thing smaller than two fingers with 3 raspberries). I felt that the server was too embarrassed to even ask how our experience was because she was silent when she handed us the bill. Good bye $86!
Service can often make or break your experience. Mark at Charbar is the epitome of excellent service. Great personality, engaging, friendly, professional .everything you could want in a server. The restaurant has a nice vibe and the food is okay as well. Thanks Mark, continue to provide your excellent service!
Came to Charbar over the weekend to celebrate my wifes birthday with some friends and was let down. It took approx. 1 hour to get the first and only round of drinks, i tried to order more but they never came The food was delayed a bit, but it wouldnt of been a issue if we had more drinks. When the food finally came, several items were forgotten and not brought and the one pizza that was supposed to be vegan wasnt, so she had to wait another 40 min for food. The food had mixed reviews, the burgers and pizza were the favorites. The steaks seemed like off cuts that were tough and no flavour. Then when it came down to getting the bill it took another 40 min. Our table was on the second floor and there were several lights burnt out above the table so it was a bit dark. Most of this would of been excusable if the service was better and kept the drinks flowing, but our server was mostly standing at her station on her phone. It was not very busy so i dont know why the service was so bad.
Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, and amazing staff.
Over-hyped place. We went to this place due to their good reviews... however, out experience was just ok. If you arent into spicy, then this isnt really the place to dine. I asked for Chimichurri on the side.... and didnt get that for BOTH times when I asked for it. The cheese item, was not worth trying... it was to hard/too dense, couldnt even chew it (I think it was overcooked?) They do have a happy hour (Got the butcher steak w fries). What we did really enjoy was the ceviche, but again, if you arent into spicy, then not for you. See pics.
Outstanding experience, meal, and service. Try the sweet bread! And the porterhouse!
My first time in Calgary. And if Charbar is a reflection of culinary experience in the city, I just might move here! Very friendly professional front meet and greet staff to start with. A big applause to Mark, who served our table. Knowledgeable, helpful, amiable. & drum roll please for the kitchen staff and chef. Plating and presentation top notch. Every single morsel was a delight. If I had a super power, teleporting the Charbar experience to our little corner of the prairies will be it.
Holy moly, the smell of that bathroom. Also, the cleanliness of this place is lagging. Look up at the lights and bits dangling and dropping dust.
The calamari was basically inedible and made me feel ill afterwards. I was scared to order any other seafood considering they cant cook calamari properly. Lamb ribs were fatty. So turned off after ordering appies that we didnt order any other food. Very surprising as Ive heard good things about this place. We will not be back.
Had dinner here with our three children and it was fantastic! The food was served quickly (a must when kids are involved) and it was tasty! We loved everything we ordered and so did the kids :D. Our server was fantastic, great place to take the family for dinner.
This evening my wife and I came downtown for a drink and a bite to eat prior to attending an event. We got to CharBar at 530 and asked for the patio. We were told it would be a 20 min wait. Upon getting upstairs the patio was half empty so not sure why the wait. Then we waited another 15 mins to be waited on while we watched our server take orders from tables that arrived after us. When we finally did get to order our server Avery advised what we ordered wasn t available and went on to list several drinks that were not available. I told her we were not happy and going to leave. Rather than try to fix things she said she could google the area for someplace else for us to go and explained that you just opened friday. Who opens for a long weekend with no supplies? We went to another place and received great service. Sent an email through the website and no response. This place truly doesn t care . So disappointing to try CharBar and get that kind of negative experience. Several months later still no reply from Char Bar, confirms how little they value the customer.
Octopus was delicious Steaks were cooked perfectly Squash and potato sides tasted great Food : 5/5
Had a company event here and the food was great. I recommend the brussel sprouts and chicken.
Honestly a very disappointing experience. The server took 45 minutes to take our first order of drinks. Mind you, the restaurant was dead empty at the time and she was nowhere to be seen. The food and cocktails were mediocre. The cocktails were bland and the burger was extremely dry and overcooked. The potatoes were too saucy and not crunchy. The only food that was worth the price was the butchers steak. I absolutely do not recommend coming to this restaurant as it was way too expensive for what you get. Very disappointing experience.
Really nice service and amazing food! Espicially the butchers cut! OmG. Atmosphere was nice but could get a little loud at times. Food : 5/5
If I could give 0 stars I would. It took almost an hour for us to get our drinks. The beers were warm. The steak is unbelievably overpriced considering it has no flavour and comes with no sides. We were there for 2.5 hours because everything took so long. I think it took almost half an hour to get our bills. We were really disappointed as it was for a birthday and everything took forever.
Came for a birthday with a group of friends and the service was brutal. The restaurant was maybe half full, and it still took us over an hour to get our first round of drinks. We only ordered mains and ended up being at the restaurant for 3 hours because of how painfully slow the service was. After asking for bills and waiting another 20 minutes, they weren t even correct. Food was fine but we won t be going back purely based on quality of experience.
I had really high expectations but was disappointed... The ambiance and the building are really nice! Would not especially go for a date night as its not very intimate but maybe with a bunch of friends. The service was lovely and efficient. I was really disappointed by the food, especially the appetizers... We took the crab hot dip and the melted cheese one. The crab dip was just super spicy and you couldnt taste the crab. It really looked like something you would give to your cat. I definitely would not pay $22 for that again... the melted cheese was just a blob of hard cheese with no flavours and my gums are still bleeding from the super hard overtoasted sourdough bread. The meat was good but not sure it was worth the price. We waited quite a long time to get our food when the restaurant was half empty and most tables were here before we got there. Mocktails were nice. Not sure I would go back...
The food here was incredible. We were with a group and shared the avocado bruschetta (to die for), pizza, crab dip and empanadas, plus dessert. The service was also very good. The only thing is the floor vibrates and you can feel people walking when you re in your seat.
The setting, attention to detail, and service of this place was really nice. However, the food was meh. Presentation was there, the first bite of everything was good but things would go downhill when we continued to eat. The burger was 3.5 inches tall making it look like it had potential to be an amazing burger, but it lacked flavour the only thing we tasted was avocado and the aged cheese. The first fry that came with the burger was delicious but when we had more we started to feel a little funky because they left a strange coating feeling around our mouths, I think they were soaked in butter or something. The first bite of the traditional pizza was so good but as we kept eating it we had to drink more and more water because it was so salty, the amount of cheese was also overwhelming. Wish they put some of the salt from the pizza into the burger. The empanadas were empanadas nothing too special but were probably my favourite out of the things we ordered. We didnt order their signature meat dishes, but the table next to us did and Im not going to lie the meat didnt look that good (dry). That being said, food did come out quickly and was warm.
Visited on a Saturday at 11.30am - table of three. The brunch was OK, nothing particularly special. Service was good but VERY slow - and the restaurant was not nearly full. The DJ was the best part! Overall a bit disappointing for a place with such a reputation.
Went here for the 2023 YYC Food and Drink Expo and was pretty disappointed. They swapped out the menu shown on the website for a menu that was not advertised claiming that it was for their brunch since it was a weekend. We went specifically for the shown menu and would not have gone otherwise. Food was decent enough though the sausage and bacon were quite overcooked. We had no issue with the server, but the food was extremely slow. It took an hour to get our mains and a lunch that shouldve taken 1-1.5 hours max ended up taking 2 hours.
Great location with live Music and great pub food and friendly staff and great coffee on site from Phil & Sebastian
If the intention of the YYC Experience menu was to introduce people to the menu, I think this one missed the mark. The kale salad (or whatever it was) was drowning in dressing and the chicken was just too spicy. I dont mind spice (and can handle it), but for anyone trying the menu that doesnt like spicy food it would have been too much - way too much. All in all, it wasnt bad I was just hoping for more because I had this on my list of places I wanted to try. I dd love all the Le Creuset dishware though!
I went here for the first time with colleagues as they love this place. I was not disappointed, our server was top notch, she was very attentive and accommodated my dietary restrictions as well as they made me a smaller sized meal since I have a small appetite. I had a side of the slaw salad with added chicken, it was delicious, my colleagues had the pork belly and steak meals they were both raving about how good it was. I will 100% be back.
One of the best burgers in the city! Service is excellent and cocktails are delicious.
Wonderful! The cake 3 leches is the better
Food was good. I was very surprised with their washrooms, they are two floors below ground with a access code to enter. And then another door to open to Main washroom area. Everything in washroom was manual with no paper towels. Zero respect for people health and sanity. Food
Awesome. Just awesome! Go, you won t be disappointed.
Pass on this, way overpriced for what they are serving up. I got what was supposed to be a nice 8oz steak, but the serving that came out was definitely less than 8oz. The cut of meat ended up being so gristly and tough it was barely edible. That was despite ordering it medium rare. My sister had a similar experience with her cut. We also got the crème brûlée, which might have been good but was clearly cooked wrong and curdled instead of creamy. The top was also burnt and we sent it back. The brussel sprouts were basically the only good part of the meal, and the chimichurri sauce was done well but it didn t make up for the other portions of the meal. The service was also very bad. Our server barely checked in on us and didn t seem engaged at all. Food took a long time to come out as well. At the end of the meal we asked if they could split the bill and she asked if she could use our phones for a calculator? Very weird request when it could have been done at the till. Overall wouldn t return.
Sides were great. Steak was sent back being over cooked. It came back undercooked. Not likely to return.
Just excellent service, food and atmosphere.
Good pizza, delicious cocktails. Our service was amazing. I believe our server was Marco, top notch!! Will be returning.
Food was amazing, tasty and tender with some great flavours with nicely aged beef. The price was a little outrageous for what you get. Youd think for that price they could add a potato option or fresh steamed veggies so it seemed a little one note. The hot crab dip was really great The brule desert was awesome too. It was dissappointing to sit in a chair that had long since lost its cushion integrity and it felt like I was going to fall through, very uncomfortable, all the seats I felt were the same. Service was friendly and attentive. For the price it was a little lacking in quantity and comfort. Drinks were also not any different than the pub down the street, but twice the price.
This place sucked for the price of everything I expected the pizza to not be burnt everywhere. Also the pre cut steak is absolutely crazy yall should be bringing out a scale with that cause I sneeze more than what was served. 10/10 would not recommend + the amount of homeless yelling at me while I ate was probably the only good part :)
Great spot, came here for dinner on Sunday night. Super quiet (but probably cause the location). The service was fantastic! The ceviche was amazing, was made right in front of us. The steak was good too, highly recommend it! The beet salad was my absolute favorite. Will definitely be coming back here. Thank you!
Interesting little spot to go to. Highly welcoming ambiance/vibe. All staff were super friendly and attentive to myself and everyone there when I was there. I had the blistered provoleta cheese appetizer*BEWARE IT IS ALOT OF CHEESE* I was beyond shocked with the amount that I got and it was deliciously delicious. The sourdough bread that came with it was scrumptious. Then I had the striploin steak with smoked beets. The steak was wonderfully seasoned. The beets were oddly satisfying, the combination of what they have with the beet dish was enticing. Then I had the flan for dessert which was so light and satisfying. A wonderful end to a delicious meal. Would recommend for any occasion or casual event for sure
Great food, very tasty. Unfortunately the service was disappointing. Service was extremely slow despite it not being busy. Our drinks were slow to come and be replenished as well as the complete clearing of plates between the appetizers and the main course. We had to clear some of our own plates and set them aside to make room for the main course. When you sit at a restaurant that is as beautiful as Charbar with it s almost fine dining prices, you hope the service matches the setting - you want the overall experience. I do hope it was a one off night and that this review allows for some reflection. We need more restaurants like Charbar that offer a beautiful setting within a beautiful location along the river.
A Disappointing Visit to CharBar I recently had the opportunity to dine at CharBar, and unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance felt dull and uninspiring. The lighting was too dim and the decor seemed outdated and in need of a refresh. The service was equally underwhelming. The staff appeared disinterested and lacked attentiveness. It took an unnecessarily long time for someone to take our order, and throughout the meal, it was difficult to get their attention when I needed something. Now, lets talk about the food. It was a complete letdown. The menu boasted an array of enticing dishes, but the execution was far from satisfactory. The main course arrived lukewarm , and the portion sizes were disappointingly very small. The ingredients seemed mediocre and lacked freshness. To make matters worse, the prices were exorbitant for the quality provided. I left CharBar feeling unsatisfied and with a sense of regret for spending my hard-earned money on such a lackluster dining experience. In conclusion, I would not recommend CharBar to anyone seeking an enjoyable and memorable dining experience. Other than the location their subpar service, lackluster ambiance, and underwhelming food, it fell far short of the mark. Save your money and seek out other establishments that value their customers and provide a more satisfying culinary experience.
Terrible slow service and substandard food. Over spiced, overcooked, and over priced. Fries were OK though. Mandatory 20% tip, so who there cares? Nobody. Food
Great location, moderate food
Food is still absolutely amazing. Went for Fathers Day brunch and there must have been an order mix up. All 5 of our meals came out at different times. They brought sharing plates with mine because it came so far before everyone elses. Fine when youre with family but didnt really want to share my eggs Benny! No explanation given just every 5 minutes brought out someone elses meal.
The steaks were expertly cooked. The sides If you re not into mayonnaise, er, homemade mayonnaise, I mean Aioli, most of the sides are a pass as you will get lots of mayo as a base. Service was very good. If booking a reservation: even if you are a table of two say you re a table for four. Otherwise risk sitting at the worst table (busiest table by the kitchen access) we couldn t believe a reservation would reserve the worst table. If you re a Last minute walk in. No bad tables. Months in advance booking. Not great. Parking: Free parking is limited after 6pm
good location, close to Fort Calgary. I had dinner on Canada Day, service is slow but still good. food there is a joke. I had burger and pizza, extremely greasy and over grilled. pizza feels like jam and french fries is much worse than A&W/ Costco. I dine in several bars & grills in downtown area, unfortuantely CharBar has the worst food I ever had.
Food was nice, service was good but they were clearly very busy. Waiters seemed rushed and under pressure, whilst the bar staff seemed relaxed. There was a wedding taking place upstairs which meant the venue was very loud, and they kept playing with the lighting levels which was a bit irritating whilst you were trying to eat and talk. It kept going from a nice ambient light to glaring with spot lights from above. Wine selection was great, a good selection of local, American and European wines. Steaks were very tasty, could have done with a few more vegetable options for sides. Generally a nice dining experience.
This spot is great, offering an amazing combination of great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether youre looking for a cozy meal or a special night out, Charbar is sure to impress. From the moment you walk in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere makes you feel right at home. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is both delicious and beautifully presented. The menu offers a wide variety of options, and theres something for everyone to enjoy. Whether youre looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, you and your guests will enjoy it!
Lunch service was slow and the restaurant was not very busy. Gaucho burger was good however too sloppy to eat.
Food was excellent! The vibe was excellent! But the best part of the experience was the service. Natasha was extremely knowledgeable about the menu(something that is hard to come by these days) and super helpful. I travel the world eating a lot of places and I honestly will not forget this experience because of her! 10/10
We came here for my friends birthday, it was a horrible experience, she didn t ask if we wanted dessert or tell us it was last call. She didn t ask how our food was. My friend asked for mayo, waited 20 minutes and I had to go up to the kitchen line to ask for it.We are all servers and know how it is but the service was horrible. Neisha was very rude, I asked her about the dessert and she was giving me so much attitude as if she didn t want to serve us.I don t recommend going here. I am a foody myself and the food was very below average, and the service didn t help either.
Came here with a larger group recently and honestly was very underwhelmed and disappointed with the whole experience. Our server Ivy was curt with us and not very friendly, only until after the manager checked in on our table she switched her attitude up. It wasnt even busy during our time here. It felt like she was quite inconvenienced when we asked questions about the menu (such as how many patties come with the gaucho burger, which is what I ordered). The burger itself was mid, and it looked like the patties were frozen and slightly warmed as there was no char or anything on them. All our burgers were like this and so not worth the ~$23 price tag. Really not living up to the name here. I wouldnt recommend dining here, take your business elsewhere where you can actually get a good burger and good service. Only upside was the patio view. Wheelchair accessibility: There is an elevator available to reach upper floors.
Wonderful place to taste top quality delicacies from Chef Ricardo. Marcs attention was great. A friendly place to go at all times. I highly recommend it.
The Simmons building is such a neat spot and an awesome location, so I expected a lot more from charbar. The food was mediocre at best and the service was friendly but very slow despite being pretty empty inside. I suspect theyre short staffed like everyone else though, so this review is mostly that the food was just very meh. I had the eggs Benny and the potatoes came covered in this sauce - not sure why they wouldnt just put it on the side because it kinda ruined otherwise great potatoes. Probably wouldnt choose to go back. Felt like they were trying to do too much, when a spot by the river just really has to have a great burger and fries, and a few other solid menu items to be a go-to spot. Kid-friendliness: Highchairs available and a kids menu with pizza and burger options
Had great service and AMAZING PIZZA on the rooftop here after a day on the water. Currently my favourite patio.
The rooftop patio is amazing
Try the Beef Fat Fries theyll blow your mind
Excellent place. It is an Argentine restaurant adapted to Canada. I really liked the Menu proposal. The atmosphere is great, the downside was the bachata music, since it doesnt belong to Argentina and doesnt match the place (and I personally dont like it unless its for parties). The Service was very good, the girl who served us is great, reliable and kind. I had empanadas as a starter and it really made me return to my origins, it is the Argentine empanada that I was looking for for an excellent price (3x15CAD) Then I ordered the Argentine Bondiola very well grilled with its incredible chimichurri, I found it spicy, but it was so delicious that I put up with the burning. I had a fernet with coca, being of Italian origin it feels strong, but it is delicious, they did it well. My wife ordered the Fugazza and it is honestly the best fugazza we have tried on the American continent. It should be noted that if you want the beautiful view on the terrace you will have to go to the same place but with a different name with drinks and fast food, because the charbar patio is on the ground floor and has no view.
This place is awesome. Check out the rooftop if you haven t already. I had my wedding there. The staff were incredible and the food was delicious. The venue is superb!
Really good food I love it friendly staff
I tried a food from chaatbar the food was so fresh and delicious , and the best part is staff is friendly give as golgappe , papadi chaat . If you have a craving of indian food must visit there place worth it , highly recommended this place
Really good food & service highly recommended this place . Ower of this restaurant so kind friendly staff , i ate prantha last night that was so delicious. Pure indian taste
Great food and service love it prantha and saag makki roti was so delicious worth it visited there with friends
Atmosphere is good , service awesome and food is outstanding friendly staff highly recommended this place . If anyone wants indian food must visit chaatbar
Yeah its overhyped and overpriced. Over cooked burgers. slow service. servers only want u to buy drinks. not a good time at all
Not busy, but waited over an hour to get service. Weather got a bit chilly and they said the heaters on the balcony can t be operated as the building is old so I guess they are decoration? Tacos came out stone cold and we re not great. Lots of room for improvement
Fantastic meal! You dont see me posting meals, but on this one, I had to. All the seasoning and spices in the right proportions. This is the 1st time I had a very sumptuous meal eating out.
Monnie was a gem of a server, thanks for a great experience. Pizza is lights out good! Cheers.
Horrible service. We ordered a steak menu, and it included a side dish, but the server didnt ask what side dish we wanted. When we asked why you didnt inquire about the side dish first, she casually said, What would you like to order? It ruined the mood during our family lunch.
Horrible service, taking forever to take order and hardly got anything that can be called as a service from the server. We ordered brunch cuts which include one of the sides each, but she never even asked us which side we wanted. We eventually had to ask her about the sides. Then she finally asked us which side we wanted. Overall, she was quite aggressive against us. What a joke.
Just went for drinks, staff was friendly and helpful Cocktails were pretty good! Service
Beautiful place for a drink. Lots of space, good service and great atmosphere. View is nice overlooking the river. Worth a stop to catch a breather if youre in the area.
We ve been to Charbar a few times and it has been great for the most part. The food is generally really tasty and the service is good but we went last night and unfortunately had a very different experience. We had a reservation, arrived on time yet we had to wait at the front for our table to be ready. We got our drinks about 10 minutes after we ordered them which is totally fine! However, our food took over 55 minutes to get to us after we ordered it and it was incredibly salty, to the point where I was not able to finish my pizza, nor my boyfriend his fries and chicken. Generally I would not have a problem with these points but when you re paying more than you would for your average restaurant there is a level of service and quality expected which Charbar sadly didn t meet for us last night.
Very good food Very unusual. If you don t like Argentine food - it s a no go.
Really disappointed with our experience. Overall there were so many moments of lack lustre service it s hard to know where to begin. - It took 30+ mins to bring over two cans of beer - Other mixed drinks were equally slow -The pizza tasted great, however it took at least 45 mins -The server dropped a beer can which exploded onto my blouse -She brought me the wrong drink which was never corrected - I asked for a drink, which was located at the second level bar, and she said no because she was too busy - I was surprised that she blatantly said no, when you would think she would go the extra mile after staining my shirt - My friends also sat at the table waiting for drinks to the point we almost walked out as there was no service - The server was unable to keep the tabs straight and did not know who had what - Did not see any management present It was sub par service, which got worse when additional people joined our party as the server was able to add an auto gratuity and cared even less about the standard of service she was providing. Furthermore, the lights on the rooftop were not working so everyone was sitting in dark. No remedy in place. Will not be coming back.
Will is the most amazing server I ve ever come across! He is attentive and professional with a great personality. I highly suggest asking his recommendations - his taste in wine is second to none! I have celiac and felt very safe ordering with no complications after. We had a very minor issue with our food - Will and his lovely manager (Nadine) were awesome and dealt with our issues quickly and professionally! Food, cocktails, service, all FANTASTIC! We have our wedding planned next summer elsewhere and sincerely regret not booking with these fine folks. We will be back as much as our wallets allow, especially to sit in Will s section! Dietary restrictions: Safe for celiac!
These guys are just awesome and make you feel right at home. Great experience
Great place but I realized the waitress overcharged me after I paid
I like eateries in restored warehouses. The food was delicious also.
Great spot for a wedding!!
We had dinner and drinks at charbar and I absolutely loved it! The cocktails were so good, and the food was fantastic. Also thought the service was above average. This place isn t rated high enough!
Excellent food and great service.
Fabulous food
The steak was not flavourful. It wasn t the best food. The service was amazing and vibe was great.
I pre booked and took a party of 10 to dinner. They sat us upstairs and both the food and the restaurant was cold. I expected better for $900 and a $145 service charge.
I really like this restaurant. The seafood is always great, I especially liked ceviche. The burger was perfect. When I see calamari fritti in the menu, I always order it - the fried calamari was excellent here.
We return every year for our anniversary as we got married upstairs in 2018. They always impress with their dishes and service. Weve never been disappointed.
Ordered the ceviche, it was ok. The place looked great but empty. The bathrooms on the lower level were horrible. I almost wanted to leave after i went to wash my hands. I dont believe I will come back. Sergei was a great server btw.
We had a private event at Charbar on October 24. I was both an organizer of and attendee at the event. It has been thoroughly disappointing experience: - Their private room is not private. You will hear the whole restaurant. - Private room booking charges are the highest in the city by a significant margin. - Food was mediocre at best; it was obvious that they cut corners at every opportunity. - Service is a -5/5 (minus 5), very unfriendly and we had to argue about ordering desserts. - Servers were trying to take home uncorked wine bottles. - No more drinks were offered after 9pm but the room was booked until 11pm. We had to argue to get another bottle of wine. - Charged for more food than attendees and then refused to give unserved food as take out. - Charge for overall bill was the highest by a significant margin compared to other venues, however, they only served limited amounts of drinks and food was mediocre. - We tried to bring up these issues with management before settling the bill but no response. Based on our experience we cannot recommend Charbar for anyone - private events or dinner with family. You will get better food and service anywhere
Great experience all around! Loved the aesthetic, the food and custom cocktails were delicious (highly recommend the red berries on fresh snow amd grilled octopus) and the best part was the service! I genuinely cant say enough good things about how incredible our server Mark was (and credit to the inventor of the cocktail as well!)
We had good service, wonderful food and great cocktails and wine.
Delicious food and so worth it. The dishes and flavours are outstanding. The staff goes out of their way to offer you the best service. I highly recommend this place. Kid-friendliness: My kids devoured the pizza meal.
My chicken was raw. The manager - a smug dude in glasses - told me it wasn t (as if I ve never BBQ d a chicken?). He then ran away and hid from us while we got our bill. He sure put the waiter in a tough spot when I asked why raw chicken was on our bill. The chicken tasted like it was cooked this morning and reheated and yet somehow still raw inside. Last time I was here the beer was warm and the service sucked too. It s one thing to be be a bad restaurant; it s another to be overpriced and petty about it - 1/5. Try somewhere else; anywhere else is better.
No happy hour except on hockey game days.
We had the pleasure of DJing a wedding here and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the brick interior. It s a special place. Photos by Wildheart Photography
Amazing food, epic service, great wine selection!! Our server Mark was exceptional!!
Food is not bad but prices are absurd and there is no warning that cheques cannot be split before dining (this is common practice in Calgary in 2023. Either let us know first or start splitting bills like every other place in the city.) If you want to add a small chorizo sausage (less than 6 inches long) to your brunch meal you will pay 9 dollars. When ordering I assumed the portion would be dramatically larger for that price.
I was at a private event and charbar and it was terrible from the beginning. Terrible, rude service, mediocre food - room was way too loud - and I tried to keep the salad from one course and 4 times theyvtried to take it when I finally gave up. So many better options out there
The rib eye at Charbar was succulent and perfectly cooked, delivering a burst of flavor with each bite. The grilled chicken was equally impressive, boasting a delightful smokiness and tender texture. Combined with the restaurants inviting ambiance, its a culinary experience worth savoring.
Food tastes great.
Don t waste your money at this place!! This place is just overrated and overpriced! They serve you a dollar store steak quality ( literally the chewiest steak I ve ever had) and charge you as the most tender and marbled steak!! Ordered NY steak and dry aged T bone steak both were chewy as rubber. Plus Long waiting and very loud atmosphere Boston Pizza steak is 10 times better than the steak here!! Very disappointed and will never go back to this place
