Big Fish & Open Range began as a unique dockside style service to Calgarians in 2005 having been originally named ‘Big Fish.’ Evenings, weekday lunch, and weekend brunch, all featuring menu items unique to the Big Fish experience were served. Big Fish looked to continuously provided a better experience for guests by staying on top of the latest seafood trends. Big Fish also took pride in being an Ocean Wise Partner. Open Range opened its doors in 2007 as a premier Calgary steak and chop house next door to Big Fish. It embodied the essence of Calgary; cutting edge, but comfortable and unpretentious. Open Range mixed modern with tradition, serving every cut of meat you would expect but preparing it with an interesting variation of flavours.
Small restaurant with an interesting menu and lots of wine pairing suggestions. Oysters were very fresh and the sauces were yummy! Main dishes were also very tasty and the vibe is overall very calm, slow and relaxing.
Love the food. However, the chowder was a bit on the watery side. And the quantity of food is quite small for the price. Customer service was great and I liked the vibe of the restaurant
I’ve always refused going to restaurants to eat fish in calgary after few bad experiences but my husband invited me on my birthday to BigFish and it was amazing the food, flavors, texture, atmosphere the staff everything was amazing that’s my go to spot from now on. I can’t wait to try all their menu. 🤤 The portions were very good for the quality and the price as well.
I visit Big Fish/Open Range averaging once a month as it's close to where I live. Tried 70% of what's on offer, and conclusively, I prefer the taste of the Big Fish menu. Photos are from my most recent visit - ordered variety of fish entrees, oysters, fish and chips, calamari and the bone marrow. The stars of the show are the perfectly cooked fish they serve time over time without fail. Calamari was good, oysters were great. Bone marrow was ok- I find it did not add to my meal. In general... Appetizers on either side mostly excellent - with my favorites being mussels, scallops, crab/shrimp cake, and wings. The Open Range side is good, but not great. I find most of the entrees are sauce heavy. In addition, the ingredients used are not subtle and I find that it overshadows the taste of the meat used. You can always ask for it on the side but I believe in eating the meal as intended by the chef. This is definitely a personal preference that my husband and I share. Have not tried the desserts as we always over order appetizers and entrees. Overall, I will come back again.
Came here on a Saturday night and two out of three dishes were very good. I got the apricot glazed wild boar chop, delicious!! We also got the Canadian duck breast which was also wonderful. The only dish that was a bit of a miss was a curry style seafood dish, the curry somewhat overpowered the seafood. Service was casual and friendly, and the place was clean.
First time dining in here and I must say I totally recommended the chowder soup! This place is amazing and food are made with love, very delicious! Parking 5/5 Service 5/5 Friendliness off staff 10/5 Cleanliness 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5
this was our first time here. had a reservation and came for oyster monday where you buy one get one free! ended up getting 2 dozen. they were good, i think the west oysters were better than the east imo - more taste to it! didn’t have a fishy taste or smell which i am sensitive to when it comes to oysters they also gave everyone this complimentary shrimp chip which was tasty next we had the mussels. they brought us extra bread at our request as we had 6 at the table - you can dip this in the soup! also ordered the peach italian soda. not sure it tasted like peaches, mostly tasted the lime which wasn’t bad i think that the appetizers and dessert were better than my main. i had the fish n chips. they were okay, but not enough coleslaw, tar tar sauce, and the fish n chips were quite hard in a way. side note the way they cut their lemon makes it impossible to squeeze it onto the fish? had to work to stab the chips with my fork! wish she would have given me the choice of a different side like yam fries or something! not the best i’ve had, and i order fish and chips at every restaurant if it’s on the menu as it’s my fave. i did expect more from a place that specializes in seafood. i wouldn’t order this again another at my table got the lamb and lobster burger and said they wouldn’t order it again, used the word “.. interesting” to describe it i will say that others did love their main, like the arctic char, feature pasta (linguini) dessert was the maple pecan pie with caramel, and the ganache torte. the torte was very strong, and i enjoyed the pie - tho i think it needed way more caramel than the tiny thin drizzle. food is quite pricy for portions, but if you get something you like it is worth it overall it was still pretty good, i’d be open to maybe trying again with a different main
Quite good seafood. Monday's the oysters are buy one get one, and you get the choice of East coast and West coast. The mussels were pretty good too. I had the lamb and lobster burger, the lamb was a little overpowering so it was hard to taste the lobster at the same time. Scalloped potatoes on the side were nice. Would like to try some other parts of their menu and their soups.
This place has been around a long time. It s under newer ownership and the food is very impressive and excellent value. They have this date night special that includes a bottle of wine and dessert. We thought it was $99 per head, but it was really per couple. Great staff really accommodating and really know what they re doing. Parking: Watch the signs out front to make sure you re in the time. Period allowed or you ll get towed.
Had a fantastic meal at Big Fish & Open Range. The food (Wild Boar Chop, Crab Salad and Calamari) were all delicious. The real stand out was the service, relaxed, friendly and very efficient.
Glen absolutely made our evening and we we plan becoming his new regulars!
Nice classy dinner place, liked the patio. Awesome for a late evening dinner date. Enjoy the people watching and just be in the middle of midtown bustle on Edmonton Trail. Had a blast and the meal was reasonable on the price and they allow you to take a doggy bag for any leftovers-late night snack and for the shy gal/guy on the first date Dietary restrictions: Menu had many options, should accompany all diets. Parking: Back of the building and some street parking.
Being a seafood restaurant with such good reviews and amazing photos and menu description from their website, I expected much better when my husband reserved us a table there for my birthday. However, I was thoroughly disappointed that I was served a bad oyster. The smell was awful and being oyster connaisseurs, we couldnt believe they served it because it was obviously different from the others. The rest of the food was also meh. This happened a few years ago, but I felt compelled to write about this experience because I hadnt explained why my previous review read at best mediocre before.
Came for the first time, the server called me by name when I walked in because of my reservation without introducing myself, shes very good. Knowledgeable about the menu, very prompt and attentive. We had the wild game platter, boar chop, and walleye. Everything was quick, presented beautifully, and tasted unbelievably good. My brother took his first bite of the boar and his face totally changed, eyebrows went up, and there was very little talking after good arrived because we were busy enjoying it. For the portion size and quality of the food, Im stunned by how reasonable the prices are. Only one thing I would change, different mints with the bill.
Great all around! Could not ask for a better experience.
Great food and service
This is the best restaurant in all of Calgary. Not the cheapest, but also not terribly unaffordable. This is my families go to spot for special occasions. Delicious food and Glen is such an amazing server. The pecan pie is amazing, as is the calamari and the lobster lamb burger. But it is all amazing!
Went for lunch Ordered crab appetizer....didnt like it West coast oysters didnt like either.... Food : 4/5
A bit pricey, but the food was amazing.
UPDATED 2024-09-05: Updated at our personal discretion. The owners response (see below) was cordial and professional. We appreciate the acknowledgement and the commitment to review these concerns. We will give them another try in the future. ORIGINAL 2024-09-04: Right away, upon arrival, the hostess who sat us was quite rude when we asked about sitting at a different table due to mobility concerns with a member of our party. From there it didnt get any better. My partner is Celiac and requires gluten free. We called before attending and they said they could easily accommodate us. We informed our server of my partners gluten allergy right away. The server was very unsure of what was or could be made gluten free and didnt make any effort to check with the kitchen. We specifically asked if a certain appetizer we wanted to share was gluten free to which she said yes and even confirmed that would at most be slight cross contamination which we were okay with. When the dish arrived it was clearly breaded. When we asked the manager if the breading was gluten free, he seemed annoyed and said that it wasnt. When we told him that the server informed us that it was, he confirmed that it wasnt gluten free and asked if we still wanted it. We declined since it was intended to share. The server came over and told us she thought that my partner wasnt having the appetizer, despite the fact it was my partner who ordered it. This clearly was just an attempt to cover up the mistake rather than offer an apology. Even after that, the server kept forgetting which one of us had the allergy and tried to give my gluten dish to my partner with the allergy. She was also inattentive and often asked the same questions over and over as if she either forgot or wasnt paying attention to the answers. The mains were slow to come out and many other tables got their food before we did despite ordering afterwards. If that wasnt enough they originally tried to charge us for the appetizer even though we sent it back as it would have made my partner sick. If this had been over a preference I dont think we would have been as upset but the lackadaisical handling of an allergy by a top rated local spot known for being accomodating was disappointing. Outside of the allergy concerns, my dish was only satisfactory as it was quite bland with some of the seafood tasting old. Hopefully they just had a bad night since they came highly recommended but until they train up their staff on allergies, we wont be back. Dietary restrictions: I cannot recommend this place for their handling of dietary restrictions. See my review for more details. Hopefully they improve.
First time here today and the food was absolutely amazing. My aunt had the fish and chips and I had the salmon hash with poached eggs. Service was not the best but waitress was having a very off day and honestly should have been sent home. She wasn t fit for work We had an apology and there was no charge for the coffee (or waitress forgot) I will definitely be back. Things happen.
Nice experience with unique food
Living in Alberta, I dont normally eat a lot of seafood. However, when Big Fish first opened, I enjoyed the food here so much that I came back 5 days in the first week! Open Range was originally located next door, but they have combined into one restaurant. I used to order the main dishes from Big Fish and the desserts from Open Range, so Im happy that Andy doesnt have to sneak next door to get our desserts now. The food, service, and atmosphere are still top-notch, but I miss the sour cream and raisin pie, which was unique to Big Fish.
Good food and service. Big fan od the house jam. Overall a delicious brunch.
What a bummer! We used to eat here a lot between 2016-2018, have tried most of the menu previously, and had fond memories of great food. Came back today for nostalgia and a great meal and were disappointed on both fronts. We ordered the Seafood Platter starter ($30) and it legit looked like a 10 year old plated it. 2 small scallops, 4 beer battered shrimp (tasty), store bought cured salmon, and literally Mary s crackers from the box lol. We ordered the Walleye and Pot Au Feu and both were super underwhelming. Didn t finish the Pot Au Feu none of the seafood tasted fresh. Left wondering if the owners changed or chef quit or what happened. Can t recommend spending your money here.
My favorite seafood place. Highly recommended.
How fresh can the oysters be ! And They have the best seafood chowder in the game out of all the restaurants in Calgary ! It was delightful experience throughout !!!
All so nice and the recommendations of the waitress, excellent! Happy to celebrate my birthday the past July 21. Thanks guys

It was perfect. We came for our anniversary and were granted with a glass of cava. Every meal was delicious, full of flavors and beautifully presented. We had a great time and will come back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here! We ate early (with a pre-schooler) and it started to fill up around 6pm. The portions were great, and everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The service was impeccable and accommodating towards our little one despite not being an outwardly kid-friendly spot. Kid-friendliness: No kids menu, but made some suggestions for kid-friendly options.
Great service and food was out fairly quickly. Food itself was delicious. Loved the general atmosphere of the place too. Wishing there were more places like this in Edmonton.
Great food. Prime rib on Sunday was awesome.
Brunch brunch brunch going to brunch for as 10+ years. Always have great time and perfect for family and friends visiting. Food drinks and treats always on point. Menu chances with chefs to some extent and always good features. So, you can have lots of choices to try new things. Notes the bread and jam chanced a few years back. Still great but could maybe few new breads. Brunch =10 out of 10 Dinner is not the same as brunch. Totally different experience and food lineup. Its a good times but something never hits right for me personally. I feel the fish is never the star of the dish. I grew up on the ocean, so I got some high expectations from a seafood place. Dinner = 6.5 out of 10 Give it a try. This could be your new spot !
First time here and I cant believe we didnt know about this place sooner. Amazing cocktails, delicious oysters and the main course fish was extravagant. So much flavour. We will become more frequent goers of this place now!
(Rhetorical question time: how did I not know this place existed? It s apparently been at this location in Renfrew for, like, 20 years!) Anyway, I brought my wife here for her birthday. She s a seafood maven, and Calgary s fishy-feast scene has always been (to my mind, at least) rather limited. Big Fish popped-up in my search results, and a quick perusing through their menu several weeks ago was enough to result in me making reservations for us. Now, let s get to it! These folks really know what they re doing! This was easily one of the most memorable meals we ve had in recent memory. For mains (the main reason we were there, though we had amazing appies too, availing ourselves of their Monday half-price oysters, which were just crazy-good), Angy had the pistachio-encrusted arctic char; I had the pan-seared salmon with crab beurre blanc, chimichurri and roast potatoes. Both were absolutely astounding fish perfectly cooked, seasoned, and generously portioned. (Mine was so mind-blowingly delicious, I had to curb the desire to weep for the joy of it!) What s more, the accompanying sides were not an afterthought they belonged on the plate, and supported the main attractions perfectly. And the Big Fish Folk were generous with them, too. These dishes are not remotely simple to prepare (e.g. beurre blanc is notoriously tricky even in calm surroundings, and this place was hopping). The chef who crafted my plate was obviously focused on mine and mine alone. The same was true for Angy s char; she said it was astounding , and she d know. We also saw a lot of delicious-looking meat-themed dishes wizzing by (the braised lamb shank looked AMAZING!), and I think we ll need to check them out too. Not before exhausting their fishy offerings though! Five stars, Big Fish Folk! Be forewarned: we ll be back soon, and this time with hungry friends!
Seafood is outstanding!
Service slow and not friendly. Fish and chips order was not the same as what was pictured on the online menu. Half the size. The bar soda was flat. Not impressed. Will not return. Rather go to Swiss Chalet.
Service was very very slow and waitress was not friendly. We started with diet cokes which were flat and had an off taste. We had the fish and chips and the portions we received were way smaller than the pictures lead us to believe, even the very small amount of chips were disappointing. The salmon dish looked like the vegetables were burnt. Prices are very high for the low quality and amount of food received . Our first time here. Very disappointed.
I remember why its been over ten years since we last ate here. Our first clue should have been the half empty restaurant which is a far cry from the packed house I remember that was at this place. The food is absolutely atrocious and the prices do not justify the heat and serve un-fresh food. There is no food quality control here. This head chef and his team should be ashamed of themselves. The $21 pan seared scallops were cold and raw. The crab and artichoke dip was definitely not fresh. And where was the crab? We can simply put the dip in the microwave to heat up just like you did. My friends $72 supposedly 16oz rib eye was really an 8oz pounded out flat like schnitzel to look like it was large enough to cover the entire plate but was really only as thick as a 1/8 pancake. Nice shortcut trick. My seafood pot au feu did not contain any fresh ingredients and the stock was sour. The shrimp were from frozen and about the size of a dime. Gravy for the mashed potatoes was so heavily salted that it was inedible. WAY TOO SALTY!!! Do you even taste the food you prepare for your customers? When was the last time your kitchen staff actually cooked something from scratch? To top it all off, the owners nephew/uncle was sitting at the bar cursing and moaning during dinner service. The front service staff tried their best with friendly service, but unfortunately was not familiar with the menu items, nor were they able to save the horrendous food coming out of the kitchen. You got my money this time but unfortunately you will not get any repeat business or referrals. Zero stars if possible.
Lovely seafood restaurant
Exceptional Service and Atmosphere If youre seeking an unforgettable dining experience, look no further than Big Fish & Open Range, where Glen & his team sets the standard for excellence. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we are welcomed with a warm demeanor and attentive service elevated our evening to new heights. His attention to detail and genuine care for our dining experience were evident from start to finish. Glen effortlessly guided us through the menu, offering insightful recommendations tailored to our preferences. His professionalism and knowledge of the cuisine were truly impressive, enhancing our overall enjoyment of the meal. Beyond his impeccable service, Glens vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm created a welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home. His passion for hospitality shown through in every interaction, making our visit not just a meal, but a memorable occasion to cherish. Thanks to Glens and the teams dedication to exceptional customer service, Big Fish & Open Range has secured a special place in our hearts. We have tried the other location in Calgary but this location was the one. We look forward to returning time and time again, confident that each visit will be nothing short of extraordinary.
Id like to start by praising our waitress, who was absolutely fantastic, especially considering it was her first day on the job! Unfortunately, I cant say the same for our meal. Its been seven years since I last ate here, and it seems the quality of the food really took a nosedive. The oysters had a distinctly fishy smell not in a fresh seafood kind of way. Then came our main dishes. We ordered the steak and lobster, but the lobster also smelled suspiciously fishy, and the steaks were so tough, it felt like a workout just to cut them. The peppercorn gravy tasted bizarre, almost like it was seasoned with a dash of soap. As for my husband s scalloped potatoes, they looked like they had been sliced and left out to turn brown before being cooked. The flavor was bland, but edible still, the unappealing color was hard to overlook. Sadly, this visit was disappointing enough that we wont be returning.
Came with a friend during YYC EXP. The Soft Shell Crab Club what what drew me in. That and everything else as part of the set menu was delicious. From the Seafood Chowder, White Chocolate Goat Cheesecake, and Maple Pecan Pie to what I came for was very enjoyable. The server was pleasant and the restaurant has a nice ambiance with plenty of light flooding in which I like. Suggest checking this restaurant out if looking for some seafood for dinner.
Good comfort food at this friendly location.
Received a gift card for our wedding so went there with friends for lunch. Meal was great as was the service. When we gave our card for payment they couldnt take it as they had a new system that couldnt read the card. The second time I took a friend for lunch. I made reservations. We were early for our table so they sat us at the bar. After we arrived there were three other groups of two that came in and were promptly seated. We were offered coffee but had to ask for a drink list. Finally a full 20 minutes after our reservation time I asked the gentleman working there how much longer we would have to wait. He said he was going to ask those other people to leave. Took a least another 10 minutes until we were seated. We ordered immediately as did another table beside us. That table received their food (all main courses) before we were served our first course of a small salad. The other thing I noticed was we were given the YYC experience menu and the Big Fish menu but not the open range menu. Over all the food was good but I was very disappointed in the service. I wonder how long we would have waited had I not mentioned anything. Dietary restrictions: There were no gluten free options for the YYC menu but last time I was there they had options for the open range menu Parking: Small lot behind restaurant. When full you have to park on 10th ave
Took my mother out for dinner tonight and we both enjoyed our time. The food, drinks and service were top notch! We will definitely be returning .
Recently revisited this place for yycexp lunch $35 per person. Their maple pecan pie dessert was AMAZING
Drop in for a quick lunch. try the oysters. they are fresh. the waitress does a great job. overall good experience.
Food and service was excellent. Maybe a little pricey for some things but you dont mind paying.
We went for the YYC tasting experience. The meal was exceptional as was the service.
Fish was overcooked-I was so disappointed after reading reviews. Waiter was constantly interrupting and then told us to leave if we didn t order more within 30 minutes. Big let down. We won t be back.
Great low-key atmosphere, great service. Had the Dungeness crab Benedict for brunch (and a few Black Cherry Mimosas). Delicious!
I recently stopped in for lunch at the Big Fish & Open Range. I used to come to both establishments more frequently many years ago. Now both restaurants have consolidated into one space (The Big Fish) side, whilst still offering both menus to peruse and order from. The space in very open and warm. We were welcomed with a delicious amuse-bouche featuring a prawn on a tostado. We then ordered a couple of appies to start. The calamari and steak bites. The steak bites were actually quite tasty, seasoned well and cooked to our liking (medium rare). The calamari was mediocre I had expected a better plate from a seafood restaurant. For my main I ordered the tenderloin, Chicago style medium rare. I must admit that it was underwhelming. The cut of meat itself seemed mediocre. I ve had better steaks from this restaurant in the past. The mushroom ragú that accompanied the steak was a little too sweet for my liking. My friend ordered the fish and chips, but subbed the chips for salad. He thoroughly enjoyed his meal. All of the dishes were platted well with a touch of flare which I appreciate. Although my meal didn t meet the standards that were previously set by this establishment. I will be back for dinner sometime in the future. I ll chalk up this experience, to an off day.
I love going to Big Fish for brunch. I always expect it to be incredibly busy. Don t get me wrong They are steady, but just busy enough that we always have excellent personable service, and I dream of the food which includes plenty of not-your-average brunch offerings. They accept reservations, and there s no waiting in line! It s quiet and peaceful and delicious.
As someone who just moved to Calgary, I looked on the internet for a good place for fish and chips, which my daughter eats all the time in Halifax Nova Scotia, and I found this place. I ordered shrimp lasagna, my daughter and my husband ordered fish and chips. The food was good, but the service was not very good. The middle-aged waiter who with glasses brought our bill and post machine but never came to us again. This rude behavior continued as we left. Although we said thank you and have a nice day a few times, he only said bye with his back turned and an indifferent attitude. This rudeness hurt us a little.
Delicious and fresh ingredients! Service and staff were awesome and very professional. We were there tonight for the set menu 3 course dinner - it was SO good! We will definitely be back to try items off their regular menu. Highly, highly recommend!
I hate having to post this but we no longer patronize to Big Fish due to a server who has worked there for as many years as I have been going there. He is middle aged with moustache and absolutely the rudest server/host we have ever encountered. We had always put up with his complete indiffernece to his patrons and lack of tableside manner mainly due to everything else about Big Fish being awesome. The last straw was last year when we entered for our brunch reso and he stood there looking at us blankly. We stated our name and reso time and he replied with a scowl and something to the effect of, Wouldnt it be better to start off with a good morning? Wow . I have lived in the Bridgeland/Renfrew area for almost 20 years, ate there with family and friends for dinners and brunches for more times that I can count over that time. Please let us know if he ever moves on... and well be back!
Thank you Andy for the warm hospitality, and top notch service by Glen- the Walleye was indeed delicious, and excellent wine recommendation. Well return!
Nice ambience and thanks for the team for the memorable moment . Kudos to the kitchen and server team.. yyc exp is tremendous. Nice selection of menu items.
Quality food and family owned... A nice little spot to have your fill of seafood, and steak... Old fashioned feel with a kind aura. Check it out.
we just left the restaurant, easily the worst meal and service we ve had in Calgary. Our server was terribly rude the entire time, the meal was tasteless and a pile of dirty dishes left on the table the whole time. Three servers were standing at the door chatting with eachother when we left, not one person even acknowledged us.
The fish was perfectly cooked. It was so moist and soft that it melted in my mouth. The balance of the dish was so good with the right sauce and the right garnish. Have a great selection of drink menu, too. Tried a few cocktails, all good. wanna try all cocktails. Better to book beforehand, tho. Definitely going again.
Walk into a perfect intimate room with impeccable service two gentlemen will handle it all. We started with warm oysters and got the feature sirloin and boar chop so savoury and sweet worth every bite.
This one star is only for the guy who served our table (weighted guy). Overall food was nice. Atmosphere was good. He was rude and unprofessional. Since the restaurant was ful, he was very rude to the customers. I was so embarrassed infront of my colleagues due to his behavior. I hope he will change his behavior after my this review. Thanks
Ordered fish and chips. Were very good, the batter was crispy and felt light, the fish was perfect. There were less chips than expected, were really good though! Will go back
For what they offered is not good food has no flavor
Excellent food and service as always.
Best Vegan options
Came for NYE. Everything was fantastic. The service, food, and ambiance were great! Hands down the best steak Ive ever tasted. The cocktails and wine were all delicious as well. Cant wait to come back here!
Great spot! So happy to have them in Marda Loop! Food was fantastic and the friendliness of the staff was unparalleled. Rhank you for a great New Years Eve dinner!
I must preface this review with a disclosure: my wife and I are no strangers to eating and enjoying fresh seafood - particularly saltwater fish and oysters - having lived on the coast of Maine for 7 years prior to returning to Calgary. And when I say fresh, I mean off-the-boat fresh. So, we are thrilled to have discovered a seafood restaurant here in the city that is truly a catch the Big Fish restaurant. While the ambiance at Big Fish is by no means pretentious, do not be fooled take a look at the menu and you ll find some wonderful traditional, as well as inspired, contemporary appetizers, salads and main courses. And did I mention the fresh shucked oysters from both the East and West coasts? While we have dined at the Big Fish on several occasions, when we celebrated my wife s birthday earlier this week, Andy and the crew certainly made it memorable. We started with the feature of the day: a half-dozen baked oysters followed by our main courses: Seafood Pot Au Feu (with a subtle earthy but sweet saffron broth) and Pistachio Crusted Arctic Char (with a mushroom risotto). And rounding out the evening was a chocolate torte topped with a sparkler candle! To sum up Big Fish in a word: Exceptional. Angela & Jeff Maxwell Calgary
Salt & pepper frog legs taste good
Highly recommend trying this place out. Seafood menu was amazing. It was honestly hard to choose because their whole menu sounded incredible. Cocktails were also really well done. We will absolutely be returning!
WOW- Great experience! We ordered the porterhouse for 2 with the scalloped potatoes- SO GOOD and the peppercorn sauce is like a food group of its own! Everything was perfect and was an awesome experience. Thanks guys!
Awesome food!! This restaurant never disappointed! Love their ketchup and peach jam. Food were cooked to perfection. Very well seasoned and delicious. 5 stars to their food and size portions! Definitely will come back for other dishes.
Marda Loop location is excellent! Great food, wonderful atmosphere and super menu. Something for everyone. The convenient, heated underground parking is the best.
Always delicious. Staff was kind.
One word...amazing
Amazing wait-staff. The food was unspeakably good. One of the, if not the, best fish and chips Ive had.
Excellent Customer Service and the food is amazing.
Had an amazing meal here. It was our first time and we will definitely be coming back. The quality of the service matched the meal, both excellent.
Lots of food)))
An absolute gem. Fabulous food, presentation and service. I highly recommend Big Fish Renfrew
Took my parents out for dinner and happened upon this restaurant due to their wide variety of fish, steak, and game options. Cozy atmosphere and fantastic service. The food is not overly salty but each element is uniquely flavorful, which is rare in todays restaurants. Ive had a lot of mussels in the city, but none stood out as much as the ones offered here. The green curry sauce was superb, and they offered extra bread to soak up all that residual flavour. Entrees were fantastic and the assortment of sides / vegetables perfectlu supplemented the main protein. I would choose this restaurant for a night out over any fancy chain in the city. Only downside is the parking on Edmonton Trail is a little tricky, but well worth it.
Had brunch there this morning. Food was great, but service was better!!! Waiter Alejandro was amazing, personable, and very engaging. His menu recommendations were wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will be back in the near future!!
I came here specifically for their raw oysters and they were Delicious! I had 2 dozens, Will definitely be coming back here in the foreseeable future
Dinner was sensational. I had the wild boar and my wife had the elk. We shared the bone marrow and red velvet for desert. Everything was sensational. The server was one of the best I ve ever had. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough
Lovely server and service. Our appetizer and dessert were excellent. Unfortunately our steak (the porter project) was not done medium rare as requested.
Sooooo good, want more!
We were out in calgary on the past weekend and wanted to find some of the hidden gems , well I must say you guys were more than we could have ever imagined. From being greeted by the owner who was so informative and amazing with helping us pick our meals and the friendly banter was definitely a plus. This restaurant is a must try for sure.
nice and fresh oysters, yummy!
Decided to try this restaurant whilst out doing errands. There was men working on the bar using drills and making alot of noise. Was not impressed. The food was good. There is a time and place for renovations. Not during service in the dining room people are eating in.
The oysters and the wild game charcuterie board were a stand out for us. Our family had an excellent time , we will definitely be back!
Food was great... Thanks for the service....
Best food and service ever!
Service was excellent, food average to good. Bar tender didnt know how to make certain drinks, food and drinks were very slow to come out, other than our great waitress experience was only fair.
I loved the appetizer it was lobster with melted cheese and big portion size with yummy bread. However, the main course of the cod fish to me was a disappointment. In my opinion it was on the dry side. Also, I was not able to cut one the vegetables with my knife. It was that hard to cut! Hence, the appetizer is the winner!
Last 2 visits was in 2013 and 2016 when we were in Calgary. We went there again last week, after so many years the food and service are still great.
Ate dinner with my friends, and the food was fantastic! Our first time to try oyster and we loved it! would go back again! Thanks for Jen and Andy for your service!
My friends and I had an INCREDIBLE experience! Celebrated our friend s birthday here tonight. Andy and Jen were wonderful hosts and served us so well! The food was wonderful too! Ordered the fish taco and it was also my first time trying oysters! Delicious! I will be coming back again to having more. The atmosphere/setting was perfect. If you haven t visited this place, you are missing out!
Was there last night for our friends birthday celebration. Shout out to our servers Andy and Jen - so kind and accommodating. The food was delicious!! As expected! Best seafood chowder soup ever and the calamari was bomb! Love them! Will definitely go back! Price was reasonable, also entree portions were big Vegetarian options: Definitely lots of options for vegetarian Parking: Parking in the back but limited. There s street parking too so it s fine
Thoroughly enjoyed our seafood meal in the vibrant marda loop location. Started with perfectly cooked scallops in a smooth saffron sauce. Our mains included pistachio crusted arctic char and seafood linguine - both were delicious. The lemon tart with lavender ice cream was perfect! Alyssa was an attentive and knowledgeable server - our only suggestion is that bread should be included w the scallop appy - rather than charging for it when requested.
Absolutely fantastic service, over the top food quality and taste. Definitely will be back.
Loved the food and decor!
OMG it was my first time here on a Monday for some fresh oysters and I know this wont be my last time. The food was sooo tasty, oysters super fresh and half price on Mondays! Everyone that works there are sooo nice. Our server, shes lovely and beautiful. Made us feel super welcomed. Would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family to come
Great service! Food was good. I had the Fish Stew. Very flavorful and light dish.
Great food, both for fish and meat (and also combos), with some specials like bison. Nice presentations. Wine menu good too, prices fully in line with the quality.
This is our second time here. Our first visit wasnt pleasant at all. It was the old Open range where they put us at by the Bar and servers and bartender just hover us the whole time. The waiter is an older man and was very rude at that time. Few years later to date, we saw the name change hoping its a new management. The place was renovated and we were excited to have dinner. Lord and behold its the same rude waiter that was serving us. He might be the owner or associated owner but please get real server with people skill. Hire more woman server too. Also they were in a hurry to get us out of there by clearing the plate when we were not done yet and bringing us the bill right away. If you look at the previous reviews same people have said the same. The food was ok and I think its over rated. I also noticed on the reviews that 30 plus people rated them 5 stars with the same title Excellent and only name has change. Kind of makes you wonder whos putting in the reviews. Anyway wont be coming back there for sure. Parking: Parking is atrocious. You cant even park on the street because u need residential permit.
A cute little restaurant with great food. The mussels were amazing and so were the oysters. The dessert and drinks were delicious too. Will definitely be back.
Omg, everything is so good. The great well-presented, delicious food, fantastic service, lovely wines. I highly recommend this place.
Had lunch with a coworker at the Renfrew location. Everything was superb and will be back.
This resturant is without a doubt the best in the City ! The staff is great, the food is consistently fantastic. What can I say ? We keep going back. It s consistent. And I go to a lot of restaurants across North America on business. Keep up the wonderful job guys !! Martin & Lorraine
A forgotten gem . . . We havent been here for some time, but are happy to find that they still have great food and service. So good that weve been back a few times in the last couple months. They clearly take some pride in their dishes. Many delicious menu items and some really great coffee to be had from their espresso bar. Sad to see that they are not as busy as they should be. . . Support local :)
Incredible service The food is off the chart Very calm atmosphere Food : 5/5
We went for dinner for my birthday. We sat at the bar as it was also Mothers Day and the restaurant was quite busy. My husband had the boar chop and I had the steak and lobster special they had that day. Everything was delicious and it was quite enjoyable sitting at the bar and watching the kitchen. I have been to the Big Fish quite a few times over the years and have never been disappointed. The food has always been great!
Absolutely amazing!! The food and service was top notch. This is now our top favourite restaurant. I had the pistachio, crusted, arctic char. It was cooked to perfection. Underneath was the truffle mushroom risotto. So incredibly good. My husband had the cod. Sorry I don t recall what was with it. But he raves about it.
Came here for the oysters special. So worth it. Place is small so highly recommend reservations. This place has some parking in the back. Front of house was attentive and friendly. The oysters, mussels and crab dip were so good, would recommend to try all 3. We didn t get any mains but looking at the variety they offer, I will definitely come back to try them!
Amazing place if you like seafood. I ordered the frog legs and pistachio crusted arctic char. Best place to eat while in Calgary!
I had some pretty good food in the past at Big Fish & Open Range. With this, I also had high expectations. This time, the food was a bit uneven. We ordered mussels, which I found tasted almost sour, perhaps a matter of taste, as the person I shared my meal with ate her portion and most of mine. Still, I know what good mussels taste like and I stand by my opinion. Next, we shared Arctic char and bison ribs. The Arctic char came with mushroom risotto which was delicious, broccoli stems that were very crunchy and the fish itself, which came with a pistachio crust but not a lot of taste. The star of this dish was the side of rice. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and tasty. The scalloped potatoes that came with it were good as well. Both of the dishes above came with turnips, which was different, not sure if I could say that they added much more than variety or that I could rave about that choice. The service was friendly and efficient. I liked the fact that salt and pepper shakers were provided on the table. Free parking behind the restaurant is also good to have. The restaurant appeared to be clean but we did have to chase the occasional small flies during our meal. Overall not bad, but I expected better, specifically on the food side of the experience.
Great place for a small intimate meal or a larger meal with friends. A great match of seafood and landfood meats . An excellent wine selection. The service was also top notch. This was my first time of hopefully many more visits.
Love the patio. Open to the sun or shaded, warm if temperatures dip. Most of all, dog friendly. Service was superb. I asked for and received 2 excellent recommendations. The wine was a delightful pairing. Was priced appropriately and I felt the value was there.
Food was alright. Raw oysters and calamari was good. Not busy when we were there. Saturday brunch. Seafood platter I felt was a bit underwhelming.
One of my top restaurants in the city. Never disappoints.
Oysters were not fresh, it s almost at its expiry date and was poorly shucked with pieces of shells inside. Service was upsetting as the server stoped my partner when he asked a question about the menu but rather interrupted with if you can let me finish . I m from Vancouver and don t often come to Calgary so this was a rough experience as I really wanted to walk out after that but I mean we all have bad days. Unfortunately I just can t recommend this place for a great experience.
Great food, great service. Very friendly, I would definitely come back.
Love this place Consistently great food, excellent service. Dietary restrictions: Know gluten free and are knowledgeable about menu and sources of items
They were closing and let us in! Great menu and service thank you xx
Ambience was pretty, food my companions had looked ok. I almost snapped my braces with the bread and dip and lost my appetite afterwards. Please do not let your bread be hard as rock , I dont know if that was your normal but be mindful next time not to over bake it - it is not appetizing at all.
Excellent service and quality meal , enjoyed a lot . Thanks for the team Parking: Parking behind the building Food : 5/5 |
Food was really good, and our waitress Alyssa was very attentive.
We ate the most delicious dinner at Open Range & Big Fish restaurant on 1112 Edmonton Trail NE Calgary. Fish & chips, chicken wings with hot sauce & orange crème caramel with fresh berries & fresh whipped cream. If you are a seafood lover, try this restaurant. The owner Glen was very hospitable. The chef from Tamil Nadu prepared the fish perfectly. The price was reasonable. The presentation of the dinner and dessert was amazing. The flavours and helping was perfect. Thank you for the great experience.
Great for a casual upscale dinner, the Arctic char and lamb burger were to die for.
The beer was cold and crisp. The fish tacos were fresh and tasty. Our waiter was attentive and efficient. Parking was handy and free. First time here. Ill be back. Parking: A few steps away. Off street. Easy entry. Tricky exit.
We like going here. Wifey loves the Green Curry Mussels. Its not Fine Dining but the food is usually great. Went here on a Tuesday Night. As usual we got the Mussels. It was so good! The main course (Lobster Tail and Sirloin) was a bit underwhelming. I mean the meat was good, but the whole eat of the plate was ruined by overcooked acidic asparagus with its fibrous stalks included. The lobster tail was a bit overcooked as well. The Shrimp Lasagna was good though. Then there were the flies. I politely asked for a candle so the flies dont fly on to our food. This was done by our previous server the last time we were there and it helped! Then our server (Glen) said in an irritated way that they did not have candles. He acted like what the hell are candles going to do? I mean clearly, he shouldntt be in hospitality. He complained about other tables, was sarcastic about the flies that were there.. saying he could not do anything about it. He complained so much that their Chef told him to let it go.. We usually have a good time here. Maybe it was an off day for our server. Maybe. Things shouldnt be said for other people to hear. You are in hospitality. Keep it to yourselves.
Great place to eat. Some small wear in the restaurant and menus, but nothing bad. Food was great and service was awesome!
the food was not good at all
Outstanding food. The elk tenderloin was tender and tasty.
Amazing chowder! Super service. Amazing experience
Delicious food and amazing service. The Braised Bison Short Rib was very good and the Spanish onion took the dish to another level. The service was amazing - his suggestions were bang on and he made sure we ate as good as possible. Highly recommend!
I rate them 5 stars. Nice and clean restaurant, service with smiles and discretion. Food is excellent. Sure will come back. Good choice for example, if you are a fresh fish market lover. Food
Really good fish. Nice lunch place.
Amazing steaks and oysters. Staff is prompt and nice. We will definitely be back.
Dinner for 4. It was ok. For the price I expected more. Beet salad disappointing. 10 oz New York feature disappointing(lumpy mashed potatoes, very thin steaks so cooks can not cook properly), game meats platter and seafood platter are weak for the price tag. Elk tenderloin fantastic. All of the deserts we had were top notch. Best pecan pie I have ever had. I just feel they are charging fine dining prices and lacking some refinement for the prices.
Moving into the area so found a new place to eat
Have been many times, but our most recent, the steaks were all poor cuts and no one finished them, and the service was very slow. We were there for a family birthday and everyone wa constantly waiting for drinks or the server.
Best seafood in town and the service is phenominal
Great food and a comfortable and unique atmosphere. It s nice to find a place that serves a variety of oysters and fish and also offers a selection of meats to satisfy any appetite. Be sure to save room for the pecan pie for dessert.
This place was awesome ! It was a first for me trying game meats and I absolutely loved it! I highly reccomend grabbing the game meat and cheese platter when coming here.! SO GOOD! Michael was an awesome server, he was very attentive but not overly which we really appreciated. The reason for 4/5 is only because of the cramped area as it was definitely a smaller area and there are soo many options throughout the menu I was definitely overwhelmed at first.. however, those are not good enough reasons to not give this place a try!! Thanks for a great birthday dinner big fish and open range! My boyfriend loved it :)
We went for their monday oyster special. We were welcomed by Andy and his service was great. He explained the menu to us as it was our first time visit. He had us try shrimp on a chip with their special sauce and it was really good! We ordered sea food chowder to start and he even served it to me and my wife and 2 bowls to split. For mains we ordered the soft shell crab and fish tacos. Both were delicious and the chip the came with it has just the right crispness and moist inside. My wife liked thewhite sauce that came with the soft shell crab and used it on her tacos as well. We also had their oysters both fanny bay and raspberry point. The oysters have good size and fresh. We had 10 each! Andy would checkin with us throughout the stay and was very kind. We definitely enjoyed our meal and would be back! Parking: There are some parking at the back. I think street parking is paid. Not sure if the same for evening.
Food and service great. Highly recommend. Our host Michael was excellent. Went twice this week!
ABSOLUTELY PERFECT SCALLOPS! As good as they were on Maui...Great food, delicious and fresh, fast and stellar quality... definitely coming back!
We chose Big Fish & Open Range because we wanted a fun experience while travelling with kiddos, and thought ordering Frog Legs would be memorable for the 9year olds. Everything about this experience was excellent. The service was awesome, attentive, funny the food was killer and with our party of 8, we had arctic char, roast chicken, bison ribs, prime rib special, butter chicken lobster, and frog legs. Every single persons remarked how awesome it was. Price was right on or to what I expected- you get what you pay for. Amazing dinner- amazing experience. Kid-friendliness: Three kids in our group- no kids menu, but that s not why we chose the place. Two kids and two adults shared a meal each and they served them already split- large portions, so even sharing, we had plenty.
The only drawback was lack of parking. Had to walk two blocks to park.
Had the bison short rib here was flawless and on point amazing chef.
Went here for my birthday last weekend. We had been here before when it was just Open Range, it was quite good too. But this time came to the combined one, was very good. Food, service, and quaint atmosphere very appealing. Will definitely come back, maybe sit outside next time!
Its a nice seafood restaurant, good atmosphere, and great service. The Oyster was good, fresh and melt in your mouth. The crispy calamary tasted good. The breakfast bowl also was delicious, perfect poach eggs, salmon and sirloin were great, the sauce is amazing, potatoes tasted good and crunchy.
Our oysters had a strong smell, the replacement oysters also had a strong smell. The crab cakes were underwhelming and the battered fish wasn t seasoned, it tasted like old oil. It s too bad. We ll stick with Rodney s.
.great food and service thanks to the team
Awesome place. Took my partner there for her belated birthday dinner and the food was to die for. She focused on oysters and seafood, I had frog legs, the wild boar chop with mushroom risotto, and marrow bones. Desert was lovely to boot. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. Parking: Small lot behind the resteraunt, plus side street or main street parking (downtown rules). This is for the Renfrew location.
We stopped in on a whim and really enjoyed our meal. Staff was friendly and service and food were both top notch. Prices were good, given the quality and the atmosphere is cozy. It is a meat and fish place, but theres a good variety of each.
Value for money and the food is Awesome.
Pretty great to have a nice meal in Calgary without the pretentiousness. Food was really great. Rib Eye was fantastic. Nicely seasoned and done perfectly. Service was efficient without being intrusive.
My first experience of dining in was pleasant. I would like to come back as Im intrigued by the abundant and creative menu offering. However, today I had fish and chips! A promising preparation of fish, however the chips were less interesting than some food court fries found around the malls. The home made ketch-up was a nice touch, light, but a bit on the sweet side. The dessert was superb - a peacan pie, made for texture and nut lovers :) Our server was very presonable, from whom, the maitre d could take tips - otherwise, institutional wardants could take tips from him on keeping the ambiance cold and austre.
First time diners at this fantastic restaurant. We were greeted warmly by server Sam who guided us through the whole night with suggestions and excellent service. The food was delicious! Shout out especially to the crab cakes and the pistachio crusted fish (salmon?) my friend ordered that one. Also, if you love peel and eat shrimp, you will get a bucket full. We are coming back and hope we sit in Sams section again.
While on vacation with some friends we all wanted some bison meat. This place satisfied our cravings and then some. The bison ribs were fall off the bone tender, and delicious. The sauce served with it was so good I could eat it as a soup. The scallop potatoes was were definitely a contender for the best Ive ever tasted. Nice looking place, very friendly staff. The only negative things I would say is the parking lot was a little small (so Id recommend car pooling if having a large get together) the bathroom was a little cramped (was a bit difficult to manoeuvre with a cane) and it would have been nice to have a roll with the bison rib dish to get the rest of that delicious sauce, but since it was served with potatoes I understand not having more carbs. The orange creme dessert was so smooth and tasty, it bumped me up to a new bracket so now I dont think I could have it anywhere else. Would definitely go back here next time Im in the area. Might try out the bison burger on the lunch menu. The Ceasar could have been a bit spicier, but was otherwise a great place to have one in the city it was invented.
Excellent Restaurant! I highly recommend it. We didnt have a reservation, and they very kindly gave us a place at the bar. It was the best Ive had in Calgary.
Fantastic evening, wanted to try thier food for awhile and was above and beyond everything that I hoped it would be. Great service from Glen and the food was incredible, we all loved our dishes and wine! Will be back.
Great selection and service. Delicious food.
Great food, tried the bison and boar. Both are difficult to cook but the taste was great! Even got a small free appetizer!
Hidden gem for weekend brunch!!. Traditional brunch menu with seafood and meat. Good lattes too. Great ambiance and not too crowded like other places
My parents are really difficult people and they loved their meal. Mom took wild boar and dad AAA beef sirloin. Sisters took duck and elk. It was delicious. I took short ribs. It was OK for me. The sauce was too sweet. Bone marrow was very good too.
Kid-friendliness: Children menu and welcomed
Amazing service with some absolutely stunning and delicious food
Big Fish never disappoints. I brought an Edmonton visitor and we both thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The service was impecable and personable. Highly Recommended!
Wonderful service! I had the lamb and lobster Burger with fries and aioli it was amazing. We also had two dozen oysters and prosecco. A perfect afternoon! Parking: Free parking behind building.
The service is impeccable & Im obsessed with their truffle lasagna.
48 bucks for two old fashions made with cheap bourbon is a rip off those two drinks cost more then the food
As the name suggests this is the place for a more interesting eating experience. A variety of meats that you dont see elsewhere combined with a great chefs vision they always please. An update that we still enjoyed our experience with the reduced space. In some ways it feels more alive, as it was certainly busy.
Great Restaurant!
Excellent east coast seafood. I will go back.
Hidden gem in Calgary... Always happy to come back.
Good food, and the ability to order off either menu is a huge plus. Locally sourced meat is also a benefit.
Was there for girls night out. Had the cod and it was better than expected! The server was excellent and funny! Will definitely return.
As always..a perfect time..amazing food.. 5 stars..
Excellent place to eat
W.O.W! Wonderful restaurant. Service was amazing and Mike had fantastic recommendations. The food was well flavoured, piping hot, and good portions for great quality food. This restaurant is well priced for the overall experience.
A wonderful place to have brunch, great food and service.
Fish (seafood) or meat, both options are possible and amazing! Generous portions. Street parking not an issue, though there is some available at back of building. Staff friendly and make good recommendations.
We have been to Big Fish a few times and its always been amazing! The last time we were there Michael was an amazing server and treated us so well! Thanks a bunch!
I really enjoyed this place, it gets an easy 5 stars from me, they have a really good menu selection and for a really great price me and a buddy went there and had dinner before a concert and I m definitely coming back to Calgary for just this restaurant.
What an amazing experience and a great ambience! The food was delicious and I was impressed with the variety on the menu, friendly staff, and great service! 10/10 would recommend! We will be back!!
Great dining experience.
