35-36 Clarendon St, Cambridge CB1 1JX, United Kingdom
pub
Finally a pub run by Italian. Probably the best Cocktail in town by far on my point of view served by Giancarlo. Prove me wrong, have a go..
Very average Sunday Roast. i asked if the pork belly was crispy and the staff said yes the top is. Then when it came up, it didnot look promising at all. Yorkshire pudding wasnt light and puffy either. I had high expectations after looking at google review but oh well.
We recently visit the Clarendon Arms and wanna share some amazing experiences. On Thursday they have 2-for-1 cocktail deal and we love it!!! We tried some Tapas and it was fantastic!! Shoult out to Giancarlo, the bartender and co-manager who prepared the restaurant for us!! Excellent service provided super friendly guy!! We will be coming back!!!
Great tapas, amazing relaxed place for food and drinks with friends. Nice outdoor sitting area, clean, nice staff. Fair priced too.
Visited the pub on a Sunday for the typical Sunday roast, and had an amazing experience. The Pork Sunday roast I had at Clarendon was the perfect treat for myself. Juicy meat, crispy potatoes, whole soft vegetable and loooads of gravy🤤. The new NapolEat management is doing a great job to bring the pub back to old days. Defenitely coming back!
We all ( My sister and myself) her best friend from secondary school and a friend of his, met up at the best friend's flat and from there we all walked to the venue for a Sunday roast on Sunday 23 June 2024, we left the best friend's flat at around noon and got to the venue for 12.30 When we arrived, we were greeted by the landlord, who was very friendly, the best friend told the landlord that we had a table reserved under their name, and so the landlord showed us to our table, and we all thanked him, and he went in to go back behind the bar, at which point a friendly young waiter soon arrived to hand us our drinks menus, a short time later, he returned to take our drinks orders, which were a bottle of Italian Primitivo Red Wine, for my sister, her best friend, and and his friend, and a bottle of Harogate Spring Still Mineral Water for myself. A short time later, the landlord returned to take our Lunch order, we had a choice of Beef, Lamb or Pork, My sister, her best friend, and myself chose Beef Roasts, and his friend chose Lamb. For Dessert, My sister, her best friend, and myself had Tiramisu, and his friend had a slice of Strawberry Cheesecake with Whipped Cream. Afterwards the landlord returned to ask us about the courses and service which we all said was very good, we all said that we would be back, and we spoke briefly to two other patrons a couple, who asked us about our meal, and we said to them, that it was very good, as it was their first time there, and the best friend paid the bill, and we said goodbye to the landlord, telling him that we will be back.
Lovely small pub with a charming atmosphere. The Sunday roast was delicious with soft beef. The staff were warm and friendly. Highly recommend but book in advance as it will be full on Sunday probably.
We went there for the Sunday roast and it did not disappoint. Although it was different from the beef roast we had from other place, it was more like braised beef but delicious. The portion’s huge, there’s small portion available and that was already big.
Food was burnt. Place was empty at 12.30, easy to see why.
Unfortunately, the pub is under new management. In almost empty pub on Friday night, I waited 35+ minutes for fish and chips, and had to remind them 2 times about it.
Nice pub god staff
Been here yesterday with family, great experience with this new management
We had visited this pub for Sunday roast and had a great time. We will definitely come back again.
Passing through Cambridge, I randomly stopped at the Clarendon Arms and met Giancarlo, whose professionalism, friendliness and, in particular, his cocktails, made me have an incredible evening!!
while staying in cambridge I wanted to try this new place, ( The Clarendon Arms). I was very struck by the friendliness and generosity of the barman, Giancarlo
On the advice of some friends in Cambridge for an excellent Sunday roast we went to the Clarendon Arms, curious to test this typical English dish... well what can I say? Excellent dish but above all excellent professional, friendly and warm service especially from the manager I presume Giancarlo who delighted us with two excellent cocktails including the best negroni I have ever drunk... for the next trip to the UK we will definitely return
We had a roast dinner, veg was cold and bland, Yorkshire was cold and soggy, potatoes weren t real roast potatoes the only nice thing was the meat and gravy. To be honest I don t know why they have a 4.5 on reviews as it s no where near that standard!!!They also add 12.5% service charge but you have to go to the bar and order food and drinks! We choose not to pay
Came here for Sunday lunch, been trying to get a table for a couple of years as walking ins due to the reviews. The reviews dont reflect the quality of the food, its small, bland and appears to be oven ready supermarket stuff. Seems the place may be under new management so all those historic reviews could be meaningless. First time I have ever seen a price tag on horseradish and apple sauce - novel. Service was top notch though. For Sunday roast there are far better options nearby, cant comment on their other dishes. Vegetarian options: Cant see a vegetarian option on the Sunday menu.
Sunday roast was average at best, the beef was so tough and almost inedible. cauliflower was very undercooked. Every single glass and utensil had white watermarks which was just so off putting
This pub, is definitely not a gastro pub. My wife and i had a Sunday roast. I had the pork belly and all i can say about my meat is, im glad i have my own teeth.
Great meal the price paid was very good service at very good will visit again thanks
A really nice place, excellent typical Sunday lunch
Try the tapas. Its yummy
Great place to eat Sunday roast. I recommend to reserve before.
Nice folks. Good food
Clarendon Arms, with their italiano management, great predisposition, good pizza, and good fish and chips, remains one of the most affordable, consistent, and cozy pubs in the centre of town. Vegetarian options: Plenty Dietary restrictions: They know Kid-friendliness: Yes Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
Booked lunch for 1230. At 1220 place still locked and in darkness. Meant to open at 1200. Not a good start.
The Pub changed hands, when I came today I thought the menu looked a little tacky. But turned out the food is really tasty. Simple but tasty.
Fair price, fair meals. Probably better than in the touristic more central streets
Delicious food, real Italian cuisine, pleasant atmosphere, I recommend it to anyone who wants to eat and drink well.
We waited for quite a while for the food. And the primavera pizza and the carbonara were way below average. The fries were nice though
Its an authentic traditional English pub with an Italian touch. They have an Italian cook and the pizzas are fantastic. The service is also excellent. Vegetarian options: They have a fantastic Marinara Pizza.
We had a very disappointing experience. We were looking for a place to try scotch eggs and we came here because, according to Google information, they had them on the menu, as well as other British dishes like fish and chips. When we arrived we found a completely different menu in which they only offered us three dishes to choose from, which turned out to be the same with different types of meat. To make matters worse, they brought us the wrong dishes from the table next to us and when ours finally arrived the cooked vegetables were raw... In short, a service that left a lot to be desired at prices that were not worth it.
Changed the ownership the worst Sunday roast I ve ever had the veggies were hard and difficult to eat, the beef was overcooked, Yorkshire pudding was clearly from a cheap supermarket.. gravy was tasteless. Big disappointment not bad service tho, friendly and open. Hope can improve in the future.
The pub was nice and the bar staff were very friendly and welcoming
Used to be my favourite pub in cambridge but it has been taken over by an italian restaurant and the menu has changed entirely, and for the worse. Came last sunday for the sunday roast (i used to love the sunday roast here) and it was absolutely dreadful. We were told at 12.30 that it would be ready in a few minutes and only got our roast an hour later. Roast itself was hard, grey, and tasteless and the trimmings were all clearly supermarket bought (including the very sad yorkshire pudding). A massive disappointment because i used to love this pub but will not be returning again under the new management.
Fish and chips was a little tasteless. Service was very slow.
I would come back for drinks, the food was ok but nothing special! (I had a roast). Service was friendly, which makes the experience nice!
Made a booking for 6 adults and a child for Sunday lunch knowing that work such a big party we would struggle to find somewhere to accommodate us. They confirmed they could do half an hour later than we asked for not when we turned up they apologised but said they didnt confirm the booking in their diary and didnt have a table for us. Sorry didnt cut it. They didnt even seam bothered
Lovely little pub with very friendly staff (thank you Karla). One of the most tasty Sunday roasts I have ever tried!
We ate very well - excellent Sunday roast - typical restaurant and very friendly staff Vegetarian options: I dont know why they only do Sunday roast on Sundays
not too bad a meal. It was a nice approach to a Sunday roast having the smoked brisket. Roast potatoes were gorgeous. Overall presentation did lack a bit and you could feel a kitchen wasn t on form that day but the overall food on the plate was not bad at all, just a shame as you can see the dish could of been stunning. Only a star away from five stars as I prefer my beef rare, and my vegetables a bit more forthcoming. lovely staff who opened up about their story. good luck to you all.
Good traditional food in a typical atmosphere
We arranged a family gathering for a Sunday roast at the Clarendon. We started with 10, ended up with 24 of us - pretty much taking over the whole pub. Caleb was brilliant helping us arrange everything, preordering made it run smoothly and we were all served in good time. Everyone said how delicious the food was, a really outstanding dinner and a very memorable occasion. Thank you!
Excellent place for late night Sunday meal. Brilliant cooking and very friendly service. The dogs loved it too
He gently and lovingly took my clarry virginity. What a gentleman. I love JT! <3
Not the best roast. It was ok. But a bit underwhelming. We were all left hungry by the small portion. Meat was good but the veg wasn t great. Better spend your money elsewhere or cook your own. The dessert was overpriced and small portion.
Cool place to pass by for drinks and snacks!
Had Saturday lunch for two of us and then Sunday roast lunch for 6. Very quick bar and food service. Really delicious food and charming staff. Didnt get all their names unfortunately,, but Caleb is a big asset to the place.
Nice pub only went in for a drink, but the food menu looked nice, so I may return to sample that. Staff were nice and friendly.
We ordered pretty much all the vege dishes from their menu and beers from the tap and were happy with the lot! Staff were very friendly and stopped by for chats and check-ins. They are pet-friendly and were able to accommodate our group with an infant and pram. Overall a great experience and will visit again!
Lovely warm place with the most friendly and attentive service. The burger was heavenly. Will go back for them.
Excellent pub! Food is fantastic, the staff is even more! One of the coolest and warmest places in Cambridge.
Popped in for a late lunch after we arrived for an overnight break in Cambridge. The food was absolutely fantastic, as was the service and atmosphere. I really want to come back for Sunday lunch, but get the feeling youd need to book!! I made a doggy friend, which made my day!
Nice staff Drinks: 7/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Prices: 6/10
The staff were friendly. We enjoyed our roast meal ( belly pork), unfortunately the dessert was disappointing .
We were looking for an authentic pub experience and of course fish and chips and we were not disappointed. The meal was delicious, with very fresh ingredients! On top of that the service was friendly. Definitely recommend!
Friendly service and great food.
Visited several times over recent years for food often with a group. Always welcoming, always good food, great specials and good Vege options. Very reasonable prices especially for central Cambridge.
Good service. Good food. Informal and nice place. Typically British. I recommend it 100%
I love the Clarendon. Nice beer, good food. Whats not to like.
A friendly, low key pub with great food and a quiet setting. Amber was an excellent host and a friendly soul!
Lovely backstreet pub with great staff and good range of drinks.
Lovely local pub, very nice staff and great food, a little bit different to ordinary pub grub
Popped in for a drink one afternoon before dinner out and service was so good we came back the next day for lunch. Food was amazing and service from Caleb was 6 star. We rolled out with full stomachs and a big smile on our faces! Would be amazing if I could pick this place up and take it back to Australia with me.
Great service, funny menu, good food and very nice people! Price-performance: perfect!
A small cosy pub but the food was excellent as was the service.
Superb Sunday Roast. Melt in the mouth beef. It was so good were booking again for next Sunday.
Great place for food and the staff are very attentive. Ill be going back soon. Thank-you.
We just had a lovely Sunday Roast. Befor we take the Ferry back to Holland. The smoked beef was delicilous, as was the veggie roast. The dessert was fingerlicking.....
Most of the restaurants are pitched toward students or tourists, with predictable results. This pub is more authentic and off the beaten path, with surprisingly good food and excellent service.
Great little pub relaxed and made welcomed
Hearty Sunday roast and delicious desserts. The lamb was maybe a little tough.
Very good service and food quality Vegetarian options: Good options for vegetarians Food : 4/5 |
The food at The Clarendon Arms is superb! The staff are very friendly.. not to mention their dog that just gives you a warm homely feeling. Highly recommend.
Decided to call in after reading online reviews, and more than lived up to it. We arrived on the first night of their 2 week fish menu residency and the mussels and ceviche were incredible. Lovely staff. Great locals. Will come back
Lovely staff, great pints and a cozy atmosphere. What more could you ask for? Edit: I absolutely devoured this Espresso martini ma ashallah Edit 2: just tried out the new fish menu, simply divine, worth a visit!!
Really friendly. Just called in for one as killing time for the bus. Will certainly return
An absolute gem! The freshest seafood Ive ever had as it arrived the same time we did. The seabream was delicate and perfectly cooked and the dressed crab was fantastic! Oysters were sweet and delicious... and a great pint too! We will definitely come back when we travel through Cambridge again. The staff were so accommodating and friendly and really went the extra mile, I felt like I was at home.
Food are amazing
Lovely rowdy
Food presented beautifully, hot and tasty. Staff were all very pleasant. Wil return
A deceptively simple pub that serves excellent food at pretty reasonable prices. Service was good and the wine was good, what more can you ask. My only feedback would be that the decor was a little patchy and could probably do with some attention but not too bad and apart from that I would absolutely recommend.
Marvellous pub for Sunday lunch and more besides. Small and cozy boozer in a quiet Cambridge side street. Photo is Smoked beef brisket lunch
We visited this pub to try their sunday roast and were very pleased. The roast was quite large and really delicious. The staff were also so helpful and friendly. I would also like to point out that they are dog-friendly. I will definitely visit again!
Food good but the 2 men were 1 scruffy and 2 v slow . Vegetarian options: 1 option Parking: It is what it is as a city .
Great local pub atmosphere with authentic British food and beer.
Dont judge a book by its cover. The food was great and really well priced. Be ready for a bit of banter - we loved it. Really dog friendly. All in all an unusual experience for Cambridge. Vegetarian options: A good amount of options and not a bean burger in sight.
Had a brilliant Sunday lunch in this charming pub. The food was delicious, especially the roasts of which there were several to choose from. The staff were friendly and attentive.
Brilliant kind staff who didn t mind us being late and holding out food for us. Lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.
Lovely small pub. So busy we had to sit outside.
A nice neighbourhood pub and good food at reasonable prices, with friendly staff and a warm welcome. However, it is impossible to check availability for tables on the day as every time I have called (on three or four separate days, during opening hours) nobody answers the phone! The booking system online is fine, but relies on the pub responding to an email (typically the following afternoon) so isnt much use for last minute tables. A real shame, as there have been a number of occasions recently when we would have popped across town for dinner on a relative whim, but ended up going elsewhere as we didnt want to go out of our way and then find they were fully booked/werent serving. Please either answer the phone or get a live online booking system!
Popped in last night after doing a quick Google search for a decent fish and chips. I was not disappointed. Fish was beautiful, light and crispy batter, beautifully flakey fish with nice thick-cut chips.
Atmosphere: friendly, welcoming, diverse and interesting people. A great place to just be. Drink: excellent beers. Especially excited to see Tiny Rebel on tap. Food: I didnt try, but saw some excellent dishes being served and others rated the food highly. Come here to enhance your day. I would be willing to bet you will feel enriched by your visit.
Lovely polite staff, very attentive. Great food and amazing atmosphere.
Great local atmospheric pub, traditional ales served by friendly staff
Cosy, friendly, old-fashioned in a good way. Nice spot for a quiet pint.
Nice friendly independent pub
Disappointed with our visit today, especially after so many good reviews about the food at this pub. When we arrived we were told that it was only the Sunday lunch menu available and not the full menu, which is fine but really wish we had known this in advance. Supposedly we were meant to be told this when booking but we were not. Had to pay a deposit for the reservation so would have assumed this is the first thing that would have been properly communicated. Also we were told when we questioned why there was no Yorkshire pudding with the meal, when it said it was included on the menu, that the oven broke down last week so they couldn t offer Yorkshire pudding and and the meat had to be cooked on the bbq. Again really wish this is something that we could have been told in advance especially when there was only three things on the menu (bbq pork, bbq beef and vegetarian) so we could have made a decision in advance of dining at the pub rather than being left disappointed. For me a bbq flavour to your meat does not go well with a roast. Would have also expected a reduction in the cost of the meal as it could not be delivered as advertised. For £16 per person I am afraid for us the roast did not come close to expectations
A rather late booking for 17: 9 adults, 4 kids, 2 babies and 2 dogs.... we experienced wonderful friendly and efficient service. We were made to feel very welcome. Despite an oven issue (which we were told about when we booked) the food was absolutely delicious. I had mushroom and broadbean stroganoff and then a chocolate/almond/raspberry pudding. All fantastic.Thank you for making a long overdue reunion of friends so enjoyable.
Weird
The food is pretty good, the range of beers is wide, and the service is attentive.
Friendly and pleasant despite us only having a soft drink each!
Go there with your eyes closed... great fish n chips and desserts!!!
Grand old pub in the heart of Cambridge!
Welcoming and friendlyy stuff -- overall superb!
Possibly one of the best pubs I have ever visited. We popped in for a beverage with our 9 month old Pointer. Were socialising her and the staff were more than accommodating of this and made a fuss of her. The sanitary products for free in the toilets, chefs kiss
Would definitely recommend the fish and chips!
Lovely pub which offers good food and nice beers. The staff is incredibly friendly
Nice back street pub
A great Sunday roast!!! I loved their desserts too. I forgot to take pictures though. You should try it yourself I guess hehe
Thought I d get in before that incredibly rude American woman who was in tonight. Woman behind the bar did her level best with her but she was intent on a fight. One born every minute.
A friendly neighborhood pub filled with friendly staff and customers. They are dog friendly too. We had a lovely time here when we dropped in unplanned on a weekday evening. Small menu, but you expect that at a pub I guess. Was our first exposure to a British pub, and I think I can say with confidence that we all liked it.
Sunday Roast was awesome!! Staff were lovely too. Worth booking!
Proper town boozer.
Lovely pub, lovely staff, dog friendly, best steak Ive ever eaten. (Ive eaten a lot of steak).
Nice pub in Cambridge.
Great food, great drinks, great people. Do you need more?
Delicious Sunday roast. Nice old school pub.
Really friendly, welcoming staff, and splendid choice of music made a very nice solo visit. Food was lovely, and a good selection of beers too. I shall return.
You can taste the passion. The staff are very friendly and the chef is passionate about his food and about choosing the best ingredients and making everything fresh and from scratch.
Poor customer service
Welcoming staff and excellent food. The regular menu is good, but the specials really take it up a notch. Dog friendly!
Went here after reading it had best pub fish and chips in Cambridge. We werent disappointed. Staff very friendly as well.
Great little pub with good food and friendly staff..
Great little pub
Great little boozer in central Cambridge, hidden down a backstreet 2 mins walk from University Arms - well worth a visit if youve not been before.
Outstanding Sunday lunch
Delightful little pub. Went several Thursdays ago and was rather busy, but the staff managed to squeeze us in even without a reservation. Great wine and liquor selection, less so for beer. We ordered starters and mains, with the fish and chips having the best mushy peas ever. Loved our visit and will definitely visit again.
The best Sunday Roast of Cambridge! Just perfect! As well, the service is the best! Will come again <3
New and friendly administration. Great ambience and wonderful food.
A recommend pub/restaurant while we were in Cambridge. We were not disappointed! Bar, food and service were exceptional. Chef uses only fresh ingredients with an imaginative menu. One of the best places in a city full of great places.
Great atmosphere and IPA beer. Greetings to the poodle mix with .. no idea with what
Very friendly and welcoming.
Great atmosphere with friendly bar staff. Nice selection of beer and first class food selection. Prize winning Sunday roast.
The apple crumble with custard... ask for a scoop of ice cream... Its so nice Id eat it off the floor. Google says Im a top 30% pub reviewer, I can die happy
Cosy place and good food!
Good food, good company and welcoming staff
Always good. Too much Millar though.
Rockstar Cambridge pub, great beer, friendly staff, convenient location.
The Clarendon has always been a favourite of ours, it never fails to please, the service and the food are first class, I highly recommend the prawn starter and the Excellent Fish and chips for a main course. we will continue to visit the Clarendon and recommend it to friends and family.
Great service!
We went for the Sunday roast lunch today. Food was very lovely! Staff who served us were very friendly and helpful too! Highly recommend!
Fantastic Sunday roast served by equally great staff. This pub is a gem of Cambridge.
Wonderful food and really friendly staff. Great portion sizes and they welcome well behaved dogs.
Great back street pub with brilliant staff
Had a fantastic meal here. The staff were all lovely and they created a great atmosphere in the pub. The mussels in Chorizo ragu was outstanding and I highly recommend it. We got to meet the owner who was super friendly and great to talk to.
Lovely food, really make you feel welcome
Best place for a drink.Very friendly people Thanks
Nice friendly place
Lovely proper pub
Great pub, very busy with a good atmosphere.Staff very pleasant. Food was very enjoyable, think perhaps my Lamb Shank was over cooked going by the colour. Will be back!!
Excellent pub food and great beer
This is a delightful and cosy pub with exceptional food and lovely staff. We were visiting Cambridge and wanted to have dinner somewhere just outside the tourist hotspots, and this was perfect. Cannot recommend highly enough!
Amazing food and service. Would go again
Nice pub
Very good and quick service. The Sunday lunch was good. We had both the meat and vegetarian dishes. A good selection of drinks for a relatively small pub.
Nice pub, cosy and just off the main green. Really impressed with the food and also the service. However chips are a side order costing £3 and you get a tiny metal cup full.
really welcoming lovely people, amazing food, great atmosphere :)
Took my wife here for her birthday. Sunday lunch for 6. Absolutely stunning roasts. Delightful small pub with a superb chef. Second visit. Fish and chips and burger also highly recommended.
Great food and nice people
good but not as good as it thinks it is
Friendly service and decent beers but sadly food overpriced, no parking facilities, residents permit holders only.
Nice beer, nice food, nice people
I think I can clearly say the best Sunday roast I ever had in my life! We opted for the slow cooked beef brisket. The staff is amazing and so welcoming and homey. Would definitely visit again on a cold winters day <3
Nice little pub in a quieter side street near Mill Road. The staff are friendly and welcoming and went to an effort in order to make our order vegan-friendly when we asked. The food was good and the drinks werent too expensive. Nice atmosphere.
Excellent food!
Nice little pub bit dear but nice friendly staff.
Friendly staff, great ale, good food. Even though they had a large party they were able to take care of us at the bar.
Disappointing first impressions at the serious lack of ability to identify customers in which order they have a arrived. My partner and I arrived hoping for food and whilst we were waiting patiently to ask for a table, held a door open to a couple with a baby, only for them to jump ahead of us and also asked for food. One of the staff clearly saw we were first through the door and that we had been waiting. The couple that arrived after us was then seated before and on the last table available. We explained politely to staff that we had arrived first but there was a complete lack of empathy, understanding or even an apology to their mistake. I m sure it was an honest mistake but even after communicating this they completely ignored the situation. A decent pub would of made us feel welcomed and accommodated. Will hope to give them another chance in the future as most of the reviews about the food are positive.
What a friendly little pub. Met up with my godmother while she was staying in Cambridge from Italy. Had a wonderful meal. All our food was delicious, four of us had two courses (one had three)and ate every single thing. It was so tasty
Fantastic food & great service A cut above most pub food
Very friendly. Nice food
Super Lunch staff fabulous
Excellent burger!
Extremely rude staff. One of my friends was eating a wrap while in the pub because we werent aware that we arent allowed to do so. Instead of politely asking my friend to not eat in the pub, the server brought over the manager and they started yelling at my friend and calling her disrespectful for eating and made her leave the pub. After paying the bills, when we were leaving the pub, the staff were laughing at us and sarcastically told us to have a good evening, despite knowing that they had clearly upset my friend and ruined our evening.
Yummy food, very accommodating for all the familys dietary requirements! Friendly staff, just a pity we had to chase them up for a refund of our booking fee? Unsual to actually take payment ahead of arrival. I thought this was to be taken if you cancel last minute or dont turn up?! Otherwise lovely evening out, thank you.
