43 Castle St, Cambridge CB3 0AH, United Kingdom
Beautifully renovated building dating back to the 1870s giving traditional East-end classics a Cambridge education. The menu has been designed to be completely customisable, with a wide range of vegetarian and gluten free options. British staples like Fish and Chips and Pie and Mash made with quality ingredients and a creative flare that turn these humble offerings into more than just comfort food. To wash it all down there's a great range of Gin, a small but carefully selected wine list, 5 cask and 8 keg lines.
The service was incredibly slow, which left us waiting far longer than we expected. When the food finally arrived, it was just okay—nothing particularly impressive or memorable. It wasn’t terrible, but it certainly didn’t stand out compared to other places we’ve been. Given the combination of slow service and average food, I don’t think we’ll be coming back. There are plenty of other restaurants where you can get better quality and a more enjoyable dining experience for the same price. This one just didn’t hit the mark for us.
An okay pie. The filling was good and the crust quite decent. I would’ve appreciated steamed garden peas as an option instead of mushy or minted ones. The leeks in the cheesy leeks were unfortunately quite hard, the amount of mash was a bit small but it was still satisfactory. Overall an okay experience but nothing I’d recommend if you are looking for a great pie.
We read a guide on the best gastro pub in Cambridge and decided to give it a go considering it's shortlisted amongst the best. As soon as we walked in we were invested by the smell of fish and chips, we thought immediately that it was the right place to have it. We didn't take too long to realise the smell was hotting our clothes and would stay there forever (or until washing them). We had some whitebait and scotch egg to start, my son went for a kids sausage and chips with beans, I took a fish and chips with seaweed batter and curried lime and coriander mayo, my wife for a beef ale pie with sweet potatoes, mushroom and beef tomato. The whitebait were well overcooked, the scotch egg ok, nothing special, my fish was perfectly cooked however the curry in the mayo overpowered completely any other flavour, the samphire were "woody", I had to spit the wood in the centre of them. The steak and ale pie was amazing, my son brushed completely his kid menu. The waitress was amazing, she did apologise for the samphire and offered a different side instead, unfortunately the chef closed the oven (apparently) so he couldn't make what I have been offered, I had to go for a slow, but I wasn't impressed. Service definitely excellent. It didn't look busy so every noise would bounce back twice, a table near us where very loud every time they loose a game on their phone and the bartender managed to smash a glass behind the bar (next to us) feeling like he did on our table. I guess it's more a matter of layout, but with a bit of more attention it could have been in our favourite list
What a lovely pub. The staff were lovely and efficient. And the gluten free fish and chips were amazing. I ran out of room from the large portion. Bit of a walk from the city centre but very much worth it.
We had our visit to the architect on a Sunday evening. A little crowded, only outside sitting next to the bin is available. Service is amazing, they are all smiling and polite. Food is great, especially the pie and fries.
Typical British pub with amazing fish and chips and good selection of beers! The portion of chips on the plate was very generous and the waiter was really helpful! For sure is a good place to have a beer in your visit to Cambridge!! I'll be back!
Wow what an amazing experience. Incredible food, my fish and chips were good but my wife's pie was amazing I wished I had gone for that. Good quality ales, very good service but a tad pricey. You get what you pay for though, good value overall.
Went recently for dinner with friends and food was really great! It has a make your own pie or fish and chips, we all went for fish and chips and got to personalize it so all four of us had slightly different dinner. Staff was super friendly, we stayed outside but inside space looks very nice too.
Takes the crown as the King of Cambridge pies. As a member of the Piemen of Alnwick, which has been travelling the land tasting pies for 413 years, I was very impressed by the crust, meat, filling, onion gravy and overall presentation. The minted peas and buttery mash were top quality. A tasty morsel. Good service and fair price.
Great gluten-free options! Tasty food and nice people.
I had heard great things about the gluten free offerings at The Architect, and I wasnt disappointed; the menu choice for coeliac customers is fabulous! My only complaints about the service and atmosphere are because it was so justifiedly busy, that the poor staff were rushed off their feet and there was a lot of ambient noise. Ill definitely be returning!
Came for lunch yesterday with my wee pal Gaia who is at the university. What can I say....???....just brilliant..the staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Special mention for the mash potato....just the most buttery I have ever tasted... wonderful
Excellent food, drink, and service. Welcoming to assistance animals. I will be coming back
Think they ran out of seasoning
Had fish and chips which was definitely above average, good sized fish and well cooked. I dont have any food allergies but noted that the standard batter is gluten free and the staff were friendly and allergy aware. The decor is welcoming and a nice pint of ale too.
Great place great music Friendly staff Food
Fantastic service. Food was good Food
The best food, amazing beer, great service. The place is amazing. Cambridge is full of really good places, but for me this is #1. Had Xmas events, get togethers, quick drinks. Its all good here.
The place is absolutely amazing and the staff is lovely too. They have loads of gluten free options, including fish and chips! I had an amazing time and I 100% recommend this place. Dietary restrictions: They offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.
Good beer. Friendly service.
Not bad, bit of a wait to get served though.
Very rich, abundant and very good service
Great fish and chips. One of the best in Cambridge
A very interesting pub, Lots of atmosphere and good service. A very interesting menu, with a lot of gluten free options.
Such excellent fish and chips, great beer list, friendly staff.
Fantastic pub with great gluten-free food and beer. Best GF restaurant in Cambridge. Find GF fish and chips, seafood pie, fried whitebait, rhubarb crumble, sticky toffee pud... such a treat!
We regularly come back to The Architect, one of our favourite places in Cambridge for an evening meal. The staff are great and service is excellent. I love the simplicity of the menu, which means every dish is fabulous no matter what I order. Of course they also do great range of draught beers too. Including gluten free low alcohol ales which is perfect for us! Highly recommended.
Fantastic authentic English pub experience! The fish and chips were absolutely delicious - perfectly crispy batter on the outside and flaky, tender fish on the inside. The chips were thick-cut and perfectly seasoned. What really stood out was the excellent service. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu and beer selection. He made great recommendations and ensured we had everything we needed throughout our meal. The cozy atmosphere with dark wood paneling and traditional decor completed the experience. Whether youre craving classic British fare or just looking for a great pub to relax in, I highly recommend this place!
A fishy place
The vegan fish is absolutely brilliant, in fact its the best fish and chips Ive had in almost 25 years in Cambridge (including 20 years of non vegan). Grateful to have the full range of options of sides and sauces too.
Always great to find a menu with good Gluten Free options. The entire Fish menu (including all sorts of taster starters, we had Scotch Egg) is GF, which is delightful for my coeliac husband. Fish and Chips were fantastic, big portions, crispy batter and range of interesting sides and sauces. A gluten free ale on tap would have perfected it! Almost empty midweek lunch, but lovely outdoor eating option at back. Sure atmosphere would be much better at a peak time but overall a great place.
Ive been in Cambridge for 3 years and Im so sad Ive just visited this place! Ive heard about it from a mate and finally checked it out and I was not disappointed. From the service (such friendly and attentive staff!) to the quality of the food, everything was top notch. I love that they had vegan options (in fact, most of the sauces were vegan!) and I love the build your own meal- very rare to see in a pub. The next time anyone from out of town is visiting Cambridge, this is the place Im bringing them to! Cheers!
Traditional English food. Friendly staff, and yummy food. Fish pie and apple crumble were so good. The fish fingers from the kids menu were so delicious too Food : 5/5
Really nice pub/restaurant with great vegetarian and gluten-free options. Will definitely come back with Coeliac family members Vegetarian options: Tasty battered halloumi with chips Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten-free options
What an amazing place for coeliac / gluten free! So much of the menu is gluten free. Great chips too. Looking forward to returning. Dietary restrictions: Coeliac friendly. Knowledgable about gluten free.
My favourite pub in Cambridge
Best Fisher and chips on the UK
Exceptional food, a great selection of beer on draught. Very dog friendly and a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were a joy to be around. Absolutely fantastic for dietary requirements - most of the sides and sauces are vegan and gluten free. Dietary restrictions: Fantastic for a dairy allergy, I could eat the vast majority of what was on the menu. The majority of sides were vegan, but you get your fish/pie with it so its still great for meat eaters. The vegetarian options were good also.
Excellent fish and chips, the personnel was very friendly! You need to go
Quiet place and good staff. I will visit it again
4.5 *7
Typical English food at a reasonable price....
Best pies and fish & chips in Cambridge. Also super good selection of beers.
Fish and chips were superb. Had a great meal, service was friendly and fast. Great atmosphere.
The best vegan and veggie options for fish and chips. Plus great beer. No wonder this place gets busy.
Fab gluten free fish and chips!
Ive been here three times so far, and every time makes me want to come back again! The flavours are incredible and everything has always been perfectly fried. The vegetarian and vegan options are just as tasty as the meat and fish dishes, hands down. Vegetarian options: Seriously great veggie options in all sections of the menu. The banana blossom is great for those wanting a fish-like texture, whereas the halloumi is an outstanding alternative for those who want something less meat-like.
Worst fish and chips. Far more batter than fish, not proper chips, tasted like defrosted wedges. The whole thing was just off. Service was great, hence two stars. Food : 1/5
Vegetarian options: Loption pour végétariens est très réussie ! Food
Friendly staff and good service
Amazing fresh home cooked food , cosy welcoming atmosphere, will come again
Very good staff
Been quite a few times and its always very good. Fish is very good, staff is friendly.
Tasty well cooked and presented food. Menu based around large choice of fish and pies. Great beer and cider choices. Very friendly helpful staff. Live music playing which we enjoyed and a lively atmosphere. Will definitely visit again. Visited again, still the same very helpful friendly service. Again excellent cider and beer choice including my favourite cider on tap. Thanks, Architect I will be back very soon. Vegetarian options: Good choice of vegetarian options.
One of the best FnC in town. Super friendly staff.
Happy I made the rainy walk here. I thoroughly enjoyed the fish, chips, mushy peas, and tartar sauce.
Best fish and chips ever. Good beer. Good ambience. Honest prices. Absolutely recommendable! Vegetarian options: The selection is not large, but very tasty.
Great for a gluten free diet
Great food and excellent service
Hands down the best fish and chips Ive ever had, absolutely outstanding. The pub has a wonderful atmosphere, great music and really friendly staff. We tried the frickles and the halloumi to start followed by cod. The batter was absolutely perfect, gorgeous sauces and condiments. This is the standard bearer for whats possible when a pub knows what it wants to be and executes it to perfection. All for very reasonable prices. You must visit.
We only had a few pints but this place has character and great selection of beers.
Very friendly welcome Delicious food And a person who speaks French, what more could you ask for?
Best vegan fish and chips I have ever had. Nice crispy batter
Great food, great service, beautiful place!
Fish & Chips perfectly executed
Good pint, good atmosphere
Really nice meal, only complaint from both visits is every item of clothing worn to the Architect comes home reeking of fried fish, definitely regret wearing a hard to wash woolly jumper - maybe the owner could invest in a better extractor vent or something
Amazing food, it might be even too much if you are not too hungry. Highly recommend!
Best gluten-free fish and chips on the planet, with a great selection of (home made) sauces. Everything is cooked to perfection and the portions are generous. All their gf menu items are celiac-safe too. There is so much choice, including desserts! I hosted a party here and the service was super, plus I got a free shot for my birthday!
Top notch fish and chips. Almost everything on the fish menu is available Gluten Free. The haddock came in a range of GF batters with different flavoring. I chose Beer Batter and it was as crispy and delicious as Ive ever had. Friendly and helpful staff. Essential to book in advance as absolutely heaving with customers. Excellent reservation system and tight management of covers. Car park across the road is free from 19:00. Dietary restrictions: Excellent GF fish choices, less so for pie menu.
Great fish and chips
Lovey pub for a pint. Friendly bartender.
Good fish and chips place in Cambridge near the centre but in a quieter area
Absolutely delectable fish and chips/pie, warm and friendly service from all members of staff. Definitely would recommend if you prefer eating out of the city centre
Fun place and fantastic fish n chips. And friendly staff. Vegetarian options: The menu includes interesting vegetarian options. Dietary restrictions: They checked for allergies before serving our food, including for gluten in the sauces. Parking: Park across the road in the Castle Street public parking. There is a lot of parking but it fills up quickly.
Came on 2nd March for a 40th birthday. The buffet was outstanding and a lovely pub too
An unassuming place but we can confirm the fish and chips are definitely up there! You get to pick the fish, batter, side and sauce. And chips come with it for about £18. Excellent service too. Will be back!
Ive been eating here 3 times and its one of Cambridge true hidden gems. Good food, buzzing atmosphere and good service too. Food served in 15-20 mins. First time I had pie (creamy fish pie) today and it was so good. The beer batter fish tasted good too. A car park is available right across the street. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options are available Parking: A car park is available right across the street. You can pay by Ringgo or at the pay machine.
Good food with friendly staff
In the top three fish and chips I ve ever eaten. I got a huge piece of Haddock for lunch with the lemon batter and it was to die for - fresh, piping hot, delicious. The chips were crispy and perfectly done, the coleslaw was tangy and a lovely complement. Oh and they have a variety of NA beers along with all the usual alcoholic ones - the IPA I had was stellar. A+!!
Great pub with good selection of mains and sides. Pies are tasty. Definitely worth a try Parking: Theres parking at Shire Hall.
Food was poor. Meat pie crust was very hard. Apple crumble top was just about inedible.
Great fish and chips. Enjoyed a yummy scotch egg.
Best fish & chips in town ! Vegetarian options: Halloumi instead of fish Food : 5/5 |
Definitely the best fish and chips in Cambridge, especially with the upgrade to sweet potato fries, will keep coming back every few months for my fix
Not stopped here before and was pleasantly surprised, quiet for Cambridge and not too far out from town.... pitstop drink on the way out of town. Thanks
Honestly, the best fish and chips Ive ever had. Also, quite an interesting vegan fish and chips, worth a shot! Food : 5/5
Came as a group of four for dinner. The staff was very friendly and helpful and we had a great time. I suggest you try the fish and chips over the pies. Cocktails were very well made so definitely give those a try. Would come again!
Reasonable price good food The waiter have much energy Food : 5/5
Simply restaurant with a good selection of cod and haddok
Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff! We ended up staying for 5 hours and had food and multiple rounds of drinks.
Pub is nice and quaint, staff are super friendly and the vibe is nice. Beer selection is a little tame and sadly the fish and chips was nothing special, the small dishes were better and a little more out there, but they were being carried by their sauces too
Simple and straightforward, fish/pie chips and a wide array of sides and sauces - couldnt ask for more. Michael delivered top notch service, happy bunch of boys #foodcoma
Crispy fish and chips
We love this pub. Great fish and chips, great atmosphere, super friendly staff. Theres not much more we could ask for!
Food was OK. Although not to my exact order. Service was a little slow than I expected. Atmosphere was fairly flat
Great fish and chips, best with some beer on the tap. Great place, nice atmosphere. It takes a while to get your food, but its worth the wait
Loved the food there and the staff was nice
Food ok. Service slow and don t seems interested.
We waited 2 hours for our dishes, Ive never seen that! Go on your way! Especially in the same street, very good Indian restaurant.
Good pies and fish meals
You simply have to go here if youre in Cambridge its amazing!
A nice and busy pub in Cambridge centre. We sat outside. The seats were not too comfortable and on the side there are smelly bins. Food and price was average but good. Good place to stop for a quick bite to eat. They take cash. Parking: No parking at the pub but available not too far away.
Great food, cozy atmosphere and service.
Great food, service impeccable as almost each member of staff ensured I had been looked after and also explained the menu fully and carefully. I am happy to recommend this place to everyone
Very tasty, slightly different pub food. We had vegan fish and chips made from banana blossoms. Really exceptional and good. The fish pie was also great. There is a small garden with a few tables.
Always brilliant. We always visit for the Gluten Free fish and chips. Never lets us down. Team are always nice.
Just walked up with my wife who had a broken shoe... First time here. Ordered our first drinks then found out the owner just sold the place and rang the bell... free drinks for all . Great timing! Best part is they have Bluemoon on tap!
Very welcoming staff, cosy environment, tasty food
The food was amazing and delicious. The staff were nice and lovely. The vibe and the energy, plus the interior design is welcoming and cozy. Definitely will eat here again. Deserves more than 5 stars.
Top notch fish and chips. Love the focused menu - tasty smaller dishes, fish and chip, and pies. Loads of options for how you want your fish and chips (even a vegan option, lots of different sides, and dips). Fish was flakey, fresh, and delicious with good sized potions. Mushy peas were a bit bland - but had various favored salt that you could add to customize it. Loveliest staff (one kept forgetting to bring the bill so gave a slightly lower review). We sat on the back patio. Great atmosphere. Had a fab night.
Great food, very friendly stuff, beautiful locale. Warmly recommended!
friendly pub with great fish n chips incl choice of sides, batter... tasty! we also liked the pork crackling and the pumped ales.
Wonderful fish and chips, you can choose your side, your seasoning or go with the classic one. The two guys are super professional and kind.
The best fish and chips in the whole wide world. We took the classic haddock with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce (which was delicious and paired really well with the crispy fish), absolutely fantastic. The chips were really good and in big quantities. The haddock was fresh and well fried, given the fact that the beer batter was crispy and its flavour mixed beautifully with the haddock, which was soft and tender giving contrast with the batter. The people working there were just as professional and friendly, thing that I loved! As soon as we walked in our dog was met with a bowl of fresh water and a treat, which he absolutely enjoyed. The location is also very casual but still modern and traditional, most like a pub. This is the best restaurant/pub in all of Cambridge, definitely makes it in my Top 5 favourite restaurants!
Went for a meal on Friday night. Great choice of food, excellent service and good beers. We had fish and chips, fish pie and vegetarian fish and chips. All the food was excellent. Would definitely recommend and will visit again.
Great place for a couple of pints, the small garden at the back is great
Great place for a bite to eat or a drink. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. A must try for anyone visiting Cambridge
Great pub! Good pies!!
The best haddock I have ever had (probably)! Walked in by myself and was greeted by a friendly and helpful barman who showed me to an available table. All the staff I met were so friendly (not overly) and helpful. I had googled best places for fish as thats my love and am visiting Cambridge. I dont normally go for fish and chips but this place looked amazing. The haddock in lemon and seaweed batter was sublime, as was the samphire and tartare and lemon/seaweed sauce. The chips were really disappointing, soggy, and some not fully cooked, hence the drop in points. Overall, brilliant service and food just really disappointing chips. If they get the chips sorted this place will be one of the best fish and chip restaurants in Britain. P.s I love that there are great veggie and gluten free options plus the brilliant pie options. Would gladly take my whole family there as a result.
Start to finish, unbelievable. Had the haddock and chips, but was perfectly made. Service was impeccable, atmosphere was perfect. The Architect is the place to be.
Solid tunes. Lovely bar staff. Excellent food. Stunning interior s. Couldn t recommend enough, I would give 7 stars if possible
Beautiful place and fantastic service. My only gripe is that the chefs go a little too light on the salt.
Spectacular Food and Fantastic Service. Fabulous Staff.
Delicious, nice and pleasant! Great service! I recommend
So, basically, this remains a pretty good pub for fish and chips (which are excellent, almost top of what I know in/around Cambridge), and you could have a pint watching rugby on TV. But we had to wait 1 hour 20 minutes for our order, and that suggests something is not right at the back (the staff at the front were not very busy at all). Hence the average score of 4*, but much depends on where your priorities are ...
Fish in chips were flavourful and very crispy
Great selection of beer and food. Excellent service.
I like this pub a lot!
Best fish and chips I ve ever had. Delightful and cozy restaurant with a small but excellent menu. The crumble with berries and custard was a perfect balance of sweet, tart, and creamy. Service was lovely and the Irishman behind the bar poured a great pint of Guinness. Would definitely return.
One of my favourite pubs in Cambridge. Great pies, and I really like the fish and chips. They have good selection of beers too. Food : 5/5
Nice atmosphere quiet even though moderately busy, met up with an old friend for pre dinner drinks. Nice real ale with a variety of strengths, good if you prefer the lighter ales. Didnt eat here, but from what I saw the meals looked nice and many people seemed to be enjoying the food.
Good eats. Good atmosphere. Good service. All good!
Perfectly cooked fish and chips!
Could not have stumbled upon a better place for dinner. Matt and Mya were so accommodating and who knew you could get gluten free fish and chips- what a god send! I love how you can construct your own meal. Amazing idea. Paul was so welcoming, had great recommendations in regards to drinks. Amazing team, can t wait to be welcomed again soon! Thank you :)
Didnt eat, so cant star. Lovely service and drinks, went with aunties, and father in trip to Cambridge. felt welcome event though full of students. Lots if seating and pleasant bar staff.
Buzzing pub that serves good food (limited choice) but all gluten free and plenty vegan and vegetarian options.
Best meal I ve had in a long time, can t wait to come back
Delicious food and lovely kids menu. Would return.
Great food with great service - would recommend the cod with Cajun batter
Authentic pub with good English dishes... theres not always everything on the menu but its good. Note: The service on the bill is already the tip.
Amazing fish & chips with perfect mashy peas!!! Lovely dining area overall
Super tasty vegan and gluten free fish and chips! The variety of sauces was great. There was also three batter options and everyone at our table agreed that each batter was yummy. Definitely worth popping in for some great food and Excell service! Dietary restrictions: Definitely gluten free and they cook everything separate for folks with celiac.
Stopped by for a quick drink. Very expensive - £15 for a pint of cider and a glass of prosecco!! Wont be going back, not worth the walk from the centre of town.
Absolutely delicious vegetarian Sunday roast, lovely flavours, generous portions and beautifully presented. Vegetarian options: Wonderful veggie Sunday roast special. Mushroom and Spinach stuffed Butternut Squash, served with roast potatoes, tender stem broccoli, savoy cabbage, and honey glazed roast carrots and Yorkshire pudding and gravy! Parking: Easy to park right across road in pay and display car park
Perfect food and good time
The best vegan fish and chips Ive had. Great batter (choices as well!), and sides and sauces to accompany. Lovely.
Love The Architect! They accommodated us at late notice and were even understanding when we were late due to traffic. The food is great and I loved the vegan fish. Would definitely recommend! Also brilliant that they allow dogs :)
Great food and atmosphere. Friendly and fun staff. The best Fish on Chips! New favourite in Cambridge Vegetarian options: Many options and vegan Dietary restrictions: Most options are gluten free and vegan Wheelchair accessibility: Ramp at the front entrance
Really exceptional.
Friendly and attentive staff. Great food. Good atmosphere. The live music on a Friday night was a welcome surprise. The one downside is that its quite smokey inside so expect to smell of fried fish afterwards. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian and vegan options available. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free available.
Looking for a place at the last second, they accepted us with open arms... (not literally, but they are very kind and warm) And then the food is so hearty and delicious. I ordered a Lamb Shank prepared on a Sunday, and it was magnificent.
As others have mentioned, the fish and chips are excellent. Choices of fish, batter side and sauce allow for a chance to change up the conventional and try something new.
We love going here. One of the best fish and chip spots in Cambridge and best of all its GLUTEN-FREE!! Its built in your own style menu is great, where you can choose your fish, batter, sides and sauce. Thay way every one gets what they want. They also have a great kids menu. They also have delicious pies if you dont eat fish. Can highly recommend. Dietary restrictions: They are great if you are coeliac or gluten free Kid-friendliness: Great kids menu
