Department Christmas lunch, absolutely splendid food and great service

We booked the chop house for a party of three. But on the day we had two more guests joining us unexpectedly. Considering it was a weekday so we thought we would turn up and give it a go. We were greeted by an impatient waiter upon entry. When we asked if two more guests joining would be ok, the waiter responded with a no . While there were clearly empty seats in sight, the waiter consulted another staff member and the other staff managed to seat us down, which we really appreciated. We fully understand that the restaurant may have been fully booked, but instead of explaining this to us, our waiter was rude, annoyed and had a condescending attitude the whole time. The exchange was discriminative and made us feel really unpleasant. The food was ok, nothing to fault. But it was not a nice experience dining here because of this incident.

Great food, great service and a lovely vibe. Eaten here a few times but first time taking the children to. Safe to say everyone loved it. Nothing was too much for the lady serving us and it felt like a real Christmas treat. Thank You.

Visited on Friday 13th Dec, one of the busiest days of the year and they kindly fitted in my booking around the many Christmas parties. I will second the other recent review in that I was a solo diner but was made to feel most welcome indeed. The food was outstanding - I definitely recommend the ribeye. Great wine list with good selection by the glass. Their own beer - although I havent sampled this yet - I will be tomorrow when I go back for Sunday lunch. Service was excellent. Im making plans to bring my parents and my partner, so Ill be getting some more stamps on that loyalty card!!

Amazing roast 5 star and our Italian friend says it was great coffee

Wonderful service and food. We didn t realise that there s a huge seating area. Staff were really friendly and accommodating. Food was excellent and arrived quickly. Only thing that spoiled it was that the table next to us contained a couple of very loud children who were screaming and running along the seats. Clearly not a reflection of the restaurant, but I do wish disruptive behaviour that like was not tolerated or pandered to in public establishments.

Dined here tonight for the first time and it s one of the most enjoyable meals out we ve had. We had a late booking for 9pm as a last minute plan but so glad we booked it as it was a real find! Food was fantastic, from the haggis fritters to the pigs cheeks, the duck leg and my daughter s favourite- the apple crumble Yorkshire pudding! Service was exceptional- and so rare these days so we really were blown away by how attentive the staff were. Cannot recommend it enough- lovely location, surroundings and really great ambience. We will be back! 5 Kid-friendliness: Kids meal was a really good quality- and staff were more than happy to accommodate preferences.

We visited The Chophouse for my wifes birthday as a family and had a fabulous evening. The menu is varied and interesting, the steaks are top draw quality. I highly recommend this very well situated and easy to get to restaurant.

The pork chop was extremely good. We wanted to order a 2nd serving but later ordered another new dish to try. The pie was crispy outside with moist filling.

Wrong sauces delivered, cold steak, 45minutes for a new meal only to find a £1. 50 discount & a £1charity charge added with full service charge! ..complained as felt they took the mickey & apology was not genuine so had a discount on one meal.. Food was excellent eventually but the whole thing left a bad taste.. Will not return.

We had an excellent set menu lunch here. We hadnt booked, but there were plenty of tables available at 1.00pm on a Thursday. The food was brilliant, service first-class and as we had a window table, we had a good view across to Kings College.

Great food and great service, definitely will be coming back! For starters I had salmon with the crumpet which was delicious and filling, totally worth the price, my partner had the prawn and shrimp cocktail which he also enjoyed. For mains I had the lamb, the only thing I would say is it would be nice to have more meat and less fat, I m guessing it s the cut of meat, but the fat was crispy and tasted good and the meat really was the standout as it was so soft , chips were delicious and I also had a mushroom sauce, which was rich and creamy. My partner had the iron flat steak which he very much enjoyed and nearly couldn t finish, he had the peppercorn sauce which he said was very nice. Both had medium rare. For dessert we shared some ice cream which was a lovely end to the night. We also shared a bottle of 0.0% muscat which went well with our dinner. If you are a colder person request a table downstairs if possible or away from the main door, they do have a heater upstairs where we sat and we were comfortable but some people may need to sit downstairs. Will definitely be visiting again! Great service and great food! Parking: Park in the grand arcade car park and it s a 4/5 mins walk from there. It s also free after 18:30. Wheelchair accessibility: Through front door but as far as I m aware no access to ground floor.

Lovely Sunday roast, beautiful location and dining room.

Haggis is a bit dodgy (poor recipe: too much liver, too little oatmeal, bland seasoning mix and cant understand why the onion was so big), not as good as the Denholm Meat Co. but meal overall very enjoyable.

Visited a few times now and is OK. Whilst the steak is good, it s not the best in Cambridge. Have experienced both good and bad service. For the price point I would expect better.

Unacceptable price and taste very bad. The steak is very salty and overcooked, I have ordered medium rare but turned out it is medium well.

Excellent venison and house burger! Efficient and courteous service

Prime location, great food, friendly and attentive staff, highly recommended. Great cocktail too. Ordered the Dedham vale rib, perfectly grilled. Prior booking is recommended to ensure window seat on level ground.

Steak was ok but for nearly £40 you get choice of some fries or a salad. Surely you could stretch to both or a mushroom or a tomato as well to make it more interesting and better value. Also the Affagato has the smallest scoop of vanilla ice cream that you could possibly get. It just felt mean!

Best sticky toffee pudding of the entire trip!

T bone black angus steak was so delicious that this is only photo I managed to make :) Anyhow, the place is wonderful and definitely worth to visit. One thing - make sure to book a table in advance!

We were in Cambridge on a Sunday and had to go for a roast. We had been recommended the Chop House as the best place in the city centre, and were not disappointed. I was a bit apprehensive as a vegetarian, but the cauliflower steak was delicious, as were the potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. My boyfriend had a steak. I dont normally like chunky chips that much but these were so good. STP delicious but what else would you expect

The meat was old . I asked medium and they presented me a well done . When you spend 100 pounds for a piece of meet you don t expect such an horrible dish ! Shame on you Food : 1/5 |

I definitely enjoyed my lunch at The Cambridge Chop House! I came here by myself and I ordered a steak, which was really tasty. The restaurant is well-located and I could admire Kings College from the window. Laszlo was really nice and Alexa was so welcoming. If I get the opportunity to go back to Cambridge, Ill definitely eat there again.

A restaurant trading on the space it owns facing Kings College. I asked for my lamb medium (pink) and it arrived very well done, very dry and with a few pretty ordinary chips. Wasn t priced cheaply but just wasn t up to par. Could have done better on the barbeque myself. Shame as I had been looking forward to some top class cooking and meat.

We ve had a delicious meal this evening at The Chop House. We had a burger and a pie and will definitely be back. We both said it was the best burger/best pie we d ever had. I just wish we had of had room for dessert! All the staff we met were very friendly and welcoming.

Nice ambience food ok if a little pricey

The receipt comes with a pre-applied discretionary service fee of 12.25% and a $1 CFF donation. Don t mind the service fee and donation, but would be nice to notify upfront on the menu instead of having it pre-filled, and many wouldn t voice out, which isn t nice at all. Which is pretty much their goal.

Had an amazing dinner! Ribeye was so tender, great chips and some vegetables. Considering quality of meat, location and service, we never considered it expensive. Highly recommended.

Have been eating here since my (and familys) to Cambridge almost 37 years ago. ALWAYS GOOD. A bit pricey, but good foods, services and atmosphere.

Brilliant experience! My mum and I visited this restaurant a few weeks ago for my birthday. For our first time in Cambridge, we wanted to try something new, so we decided to book a reservation for an evening dinner here. We ordered the Fillet and Ribeye Steaks, both cooked to the requested temperatures. The quality of the food was excellent. To top it off, I was pleasantly surprised with a delicious sticky toffee pudding, complete with a candle, as a birthday treat. It was a thoughtful gesture that I will not soon forget. I definitely would recommend it!

My favourite steak/chop place in Cambridge, really great food. Make sure you save room for the sticky toffee pudding, it truly is the best I ve tasted, the sauce is soooo good! Great friendly staff too!

Lovely restaurant

Excellent restaurant. Although I did only get the mac & cheese, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. The top was sprinkled with some sort of potato chips. The cheese layer at the top, combined with the macaronis create an exquisite taste.

Noisy restaurant with everyone shouting to be heard downstairs in the basement whilst playing music which made hearing your fellow visitors even worse. For the food it s very expensive. My filet was chewy. I never wish to eat here again Food

Amazing restaurant. Lived in Cambridge for four years but have never tried Cambridge Chop House as thought it was always crowded. Finally got a booking though and glad we had! Their food was delicious and service was fantastic. We made the mistake of booking dinner right before a play at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. Big mistake as we needed to finish dinner quickly. Will defintely come back and keep the whole evening free so we can enjoy our nice meals more

Mediocre Steak - quite average but exorbitantly priced . Its not that bad but its just the usual for high prices. Also dont know the difference between a medium-well from a medium-rare. Service pleasant and good however. Soup for 7.5 and £38 for a ribeye hmmmm

We absolutely loved it! Our office recently had an away day, and we chose to have lunch at The Cambridge Chop House. From start to finish, everything was fantastic. Natasha, who handled our booking, was incredibly accommodating, despite the numerous changes I had to make to the reservation time. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted warmly by all the staff. The menu offered a great selection enough variety to satisfy everyones tastes without overwhelming us. Out of curiosity, I decided to try the deep-fried haggis for my starter, my first time trying haggis. It was enjoyable, although I must admit its not to everyones taste. For my main course, I opted for the ribeye, which was cooked and seasoned to perfection. My Director was particularly impressed with his chateaubriand. As for dessert, I indulged in The Chop House Mess, a delightful pavlova topped with berry sorbet truly refreshing! Those who ordered the brownies are still raving about how delicious they were on Monday. All in all, a unanimous five-star rating from our group of fifteen. Well done, The Cambridge Chop House! Great place to eat

Perfect dinner place for celebrating a beautiful May day. Do not miss out on their set menu, available from Monday to Thursday, before 6:30pm. We went for the two-course set, with a cauliflower soup as the starter. Rich and delicious, great combination with their house bread. A little bit salty but overall it s quality stuff. We then got the butler steak and the pan fried coley. I would particularly recommend the steak, which is very tender. Service is excellent too! Nice experience overall!

Had a lovely time here celebrating dads birthday. A lovely restaurant and the staff were amazing. Very friendly. From the outside it doesnt look like there is a lot of seating. However, there was plenty of seating on the lower level. Please bear this in mind for anyone booking with mobility issues. The food was amazing!

Booked thisnplace for birthday sunday roast. Dropped off a deceration for them to putnonntable as a surprise when we got there. Got there and this decoration was no wheere to be seen. Had to ask them and do it myself. Staff were lovely, but clearly just churning out meals and dont have time to do usual little things for a roast. We were not offered any sauces when food arrived, for example, butbthey did bring a mini cake on the house for birthday girl. Food was very average. For somewhere called the Chop House, i expected meat to be good. Porknwas pretty good beef was disappointing andntiny portion of beef too. The food also arrived VERY quickly, never a good sign. The venue itself is lovely, just a shame about the conveyer belt feeling.

It was ok. I think for a place specialising in lumps of meat, that the lump of meat served to me should have been of a higher standard. It wasn t cut properly and as such wasn t cooked properly. It also wasn t a great piece of meat. It was obviously aged, but perhaps not stored properly as generally it was flavoursome, but towards the edge was verging on rancid. On the plus side the staff were very good. Overall though the quality didn t match the price tag and I was left feeling a little underwhelmed.

Unprofessional place I come inside today for a buissness lunch 5 table empty and dirty with dirty place I ask for a tabe for 5 they say if the table is dirty they can t clean than they say the place was full and busy . Please not waste your time here .: they need change employees here total unprofessional and arrogant people .

Great rib eyes, starter and dessert

A lovely place, wonderful staff and delicious food. Dont hesitate and come and enjoy.

Sunday Roast: Chicken dry, Roast Beef taste great but small portions. Flat deflated Yorkshire. under cooked parsnip. Potatoes taste undercooked and old. What happened to the nice crisp duck fat potatoes. Over crowded with overcooked greens and barely any gravy. Just give us a gravy boat.

Location and interior are very nice, downstairs feels cosy and warm. The staff were lovely and attentive without being over the top. I ordered the vegetarian option (cauliflower steak). The cauliflower steak was the only thing I was somewhat disappointed with. I wasnt entirely surprised considering it is a place mainly focused on meat dishes but feel that the cauliflower steak itself couldve been something more than just a wedge of cauliflower grilled on 2 sides. Even just some spices to make it a little more interesting. The potatoes and yorkshire were tasty, as were the greens. Overall I am still glad I went.

First visit here, had the chophouse burger, it was delicious. There were 4 of us all having something different, the verdict from all was excellent. The staff are amazing, will definitely visit again.

Popular city centre restaurant with an interesting menu. We had the rather more restricted pre-theatre option, but that was served quickly and very adequate.

Kids menu for sausage meal was one sausage. The lamb chop had only watercress with fries as extra. Overall it was disappointing.

Fillet was cooked to perfection, Sticky Toffee Pudding was delicious. Highly recommend for a good meal out and excellent service.

Don t come here the food is horrible! The mashed potatoes tasted like it was cooked from the day before, the pork had like those spines as you can see in the picture .its one of those place where you don t eat the true traditional dishes!!! A place made just for tourists to be fooled

Delicious modern British food and the best place for steak in Cambridge. The service is always exceptional and I love the atmosphere downstairs, especially in the side room with vaulted ceilings. A little on the pricy side of course but definitely worth it. Portions are big and there are some cheaper dishes available too. Havent tried the Sunday roast yet but looking forward to it!

Amazing. Dined in the cellar/crypt, served Badgers Nadgers by a wonderful lady who kept us entertained all evening, ate some amazing, well cooked steak. What a night. There were six of us and we would all highly recommend to any fans of red meat or just having a good time. Wheelchair accessibility: Lots of steps and stairs into and throughout the building. Narrow corridors, especially downstairs.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chop House in Cambridge, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. And lets talk about the food - wow! The dish that came out of the kitchen was an absolute masterpiece. From the perfectly cooked, decadent sides, each bite was bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. Its clear that the chefs at Chop House take great pride in their craft, and it certainly shows in the quality of the food. Overall, my experience at Chop House was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of fantastic food, wonderful atmosphere, and outstanding service made for a truly memorable evening. The food isnt bad (slightly overpriced), but for both of the courses I ordered I did not get what I ordered. Ambient is very nice, though.

Update: now a vegetarian, I wasnt expecting to find much here. They have some options but as expected this wouldnt be a place to visit for vegetarian food. The booking was for mothers day and I was happy to try their non-meat options. The staff were lovely. Its the little touches like given a flower when greeted. The waiters and waitresses were attentive but not overbearing. Toilets for the most part were fairly clean (I must have visited a cubicle after a child) but Ive been before and theyre fine. For Sunday lunch, I had the vegetarian option, a cauliflower steak, but it didnt look like one Ive had before. It was a chunk of cauliflower, but I find it hard to believe it was worth £17.50. The potatoes were stale compared to the meat eaters (probably cooked in a different oil, partner tasted and confirmed it was different). Yorkshire pudding, might have just been coincidence, also burnt around the edges, dry on the inside. Vegetables (greens, carrots, parsnips) were lovely, gravy was okay. Overall the food was nice and Id probably try something else if we were to go again. I didnt complain mainly because we had a lovely time, they treated us well, and I could not have expected more from a place that serves predominantly meat. Im glad they were able to seat us on Mothers Day and all the meat eaters enjoyed their meals. Note for accessibility (if this helps): There is a step leading up to the entrance. We were seated downstairs. I would recommend letting the staff know when booking if youre requesting a seat on the ground floor as seating there is quite limited. The ladies toilets were downstairs right at the end of the seating area, there are a few steps on the lower level to get there. I didnt see a bathroom on the ground floor so apologies if I missed that. Original review: Really nice food, a starter platter to share, probably quite a lot for two people but there was a variety of things which was ideal as we werent sure what to expect. The main courses were quite heavy in top of the sharing platter we had to start with. Quite pricey (even for Cambridge) but good quality food. Staff were friendly and had good knowledge about the food being served.

Just adding this review (as I cant leave a separate one) to acknowledge the amazing service when my parents celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by taking their grandson to lunch at this restaurant yesterday. They were wonderfully looked after and thoroughly enjoyed their lunch. My son said his steak was wonderful and my father loved the sticky toffee pudding. An excellent choice for lunch in Cambridge - our starters of haggis and beef cheek were delicious and prettily presented, and we all enjoyed our generous and tasty butler steaks. Sadly no room for pudding but the looked very good too. Good service and a special thank you to whoever took note of the request in the booking form :-)

Tasty rib eye steak and fries

Booked a table for 2 on Saturday evening. On arriving was informed rather off-handedly that our table wasnt ready. We said we would have a drink and wait but were told there was no room (there was) and to go to the pub next door for a drink and come back. I also mentioned I had specifically booked a table upstairs. I was then told, rudely, that that wouldnt be possible. Absolutely disgraceful! We left and ate elsewhere. I went back later to complain to the manager. He said the man we had seen had gone and he would speak to him the next day and then contact me with an explanation. Guess what - havent heard a thing... they may cook a good steak but why a restaurant would want a reputation for employing rude, arrogant staff is beyond me....

I love the venue, Ive eaten here once before and what I appreciate about this Chophouse is the consistent high service as well as the food. The staff are fab, absolutely know their business and theyre kind and friendly. Wonderful place, the food is excellent and the professionalism of the team is exceptional.

Quality food and service and great atmosphere

The place looked great, the winter berry cocktail was delicious, but the food was a massive let down for us! We had the cracking pork starter which was impossible to even eat if you didn t want to break your teeth and the smell was really strong & the prawn cocktail which was okay at best. The mains which were two ribeye steaks would have been really good, if they weren t served cold. It was just a let down, considering the price

First visit to The Chop House and it will definitely not be our last. Upon arrival we were shown to our table by our waiter who was attentive yet unobtrusive through the evening. I would highly recommend the Black Angus 180 day grain fed T Bone steak. It was the BEST steak I have ever eaten. Succulent, tender and full of flavour. Everything was absolutely perfect. My new favourite restaurant in Cambridge.

Its right in the middle of tourist central but its neither a rip off nor terribly cutting corners. We had a good meal with good service and nice drinks.

Delicious food!! And really good service, loved it here. We had the rib eye and peppercorn sauce which we LOVED, and the pork belly roast which was also very good

Called in for Sunday lunch. Ordered the beef which was fine, however the roast potatoes were previously cooked either in the morning or another day and had been warmed up. They were quite hard on the outside and virtually dry in the middle, not the nicest of tastes, so didn t eat them all. Also I do like my vegetables al dente but the carrots were undercooked and even though I had a steak knife they were very hard to cut! Wouldn t go back for Sunday lunch as we ve enjoyed nicer lunches in other places in Cambridge.

What can I say what a wonderful restaurant I had the Steak pie and roasted root vegetables it was sublime. Big thanks to Marcia the waitress and all the staff for making us feel so welcome! Vegetarian options: There are a couple of vegetarian options on the menu the salads are beautiful

We have been there several times and we went there for Valentines day today. As always everything was amazing, the food was outstanding and the service even more so. We were served by very nice Portuguese-speaking waiter and waitress, who were extremely helpful and promptly resolved the slight starter mix-up. It was truly a pleasure, this is definitely a place to keep coming back to for our special occasions. Vegetarian options: Despite its name, there are also a few vegetarian options :)

I suspose i should have known by the prices that this place would be a theatre resturant. Although the food tasted exellent there wasnt much of it..it did look good arranged in a small area in the middle of the plate. Im not a cheap skate as i earn plenty as a solicitor....but had to stop off at macdonalds on way home to bury st edmunds for a big mac meal to fill myself up.,This reminded me of my younger days when me and my girlfriend..now my wife used to use the drivethru...it wasnt a bad experience...great petting in the car waiting for the order..lol. Im not putting this place down but if you have a large appitite then better eat something before or after your meal here.

Amazing food and atmosphere with a brilliant level of service during a busy time of the year. Fantastic cuts of meat at a good price. Would recommend.

Loved this place. Had a beautifully cooked fillet steak. Mash and mushroom sauce also lovely. Whole table really enjoyed their meals. Got the sharing platter to start, some interesting takes on classic British food such as haggis fritters! Staff were very friendly and attentive. Would recommend booking in advance and getting a table upstairs. Sticker toffee pudding perhaps a tad too sweet

Lovely restaurant immediately opposite Kings College. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed with hearty food. The burgers here are outstanding. One of our guest s meat dishes wasn t great (tough) but the staff were very responsive and replaced it as quickly as they could. Impressive. I can highly recommend the chocolate tart dessert which came with an incredible tangy berry compote - perfect!

Visited last night as a table of 11, the service throughout the evening was incredible. Super friendly staff who looked after us all evening. Food was absolutely incredible! Loved the mushroom starter

This place is more hype than substance. The steak was too hard and the waitress grumpy.

Very good restaurant situated in a beautiful part of Cambridge. We shared a big piece of meat (kind of tomahawk, I cant remember the name) with chips. The meat was very tasty and the chips were crispy and not oily. The atmosphere is warm and you can enjoy a nice view on a beautiful street while youre eating. They also have a good wine selection. The service was excellent. I definitely recommend.

We had the Christmas dinner menu. It was excellent. Staff was fun and friendly and the place looks great.

I have to say I was disappointed. I wanted to come to this place since the first day I arrived at Cambridge. However the quality and service didn t meet my expectation. The appetiser were good, but the porterhouse we ordered was burnt. So I asked for solution when my server came to ask, and the manager told us there is no way to get this fixed cuz the fillet part supposed to be thinner. So a chophouse can t serve proper classic steak? Eventually we were convinced to change our order to a regular fillet, it was fine. The venison was also over cooked, the meat was dry and hard. The overall experience made me dissatisfied, the quality of steak is under expectation.

What a gem of a place! The service was amazing, really attentive staff, food was mouthwatering, great representation and just cooked perfectly! The whole place was decorated for Xmas and it really made the atmosphere. I can t wait to be back and try more dishes!

Outstanding

It was a cold windy day out, and we were snug inside enjoying a celebratory lunch. From the second we stepped in we had a great time. Warm, hospitable, lovely atmosphere, delicious menu, and floor to ceiling windows with views onto beautiful architecture and big sky. A big thank you for making our time there memorable. Highly recommend.

Delicious food, especially the starters. My steak was cooked to perfection and exactly as requested. Staff were friendly and attentive. Easily accommodated us with a pram which we were delighted with. Would recommend and will definitely return!
