Local food and drinks
very nice, authentic spot. $12 for 2 johnny cakes filled with tuna and lettuce. service is wonderful. sweet ladies. some big dishes are seasonal unfortunately, so you might not get what you see in photos/or the menu. for example rice, mac n cheese, chicken also, google maps might lead you to the wrong entrance because that gate might be closed. you'll have to enter the plaza's parking lot. which comes before google maps suggested entrance.
Great place for real Caribbean food, made with love! We tried the banana fritters (our favorite), johnnycakes, and curry chicken, along with some local juices. Good stuff, and the owner is very friendly to everyone.
Mommas Shack is that place that welcomes you to authentic island food, fresh producs prepared by her on site, changing menu so be open minded to try what she has cooked for that day. She is ready at 7am and some of her staples go out fast. We have tried her Johnny Cakes, salmon balls, Mac and cheese, collard greens, fried plantains, butter squash, Bbq chicken, veggie sausage and Caribbeanrice. She welcomes you with her vibrant and genuine personality. I recommend you try her food. really food for your soul. Free parking available only for 15 minutes, otherwise pay parking but ample space.
I had been searching for Johnny cake and finally found some. They were big and fluffy only $2 each. I wish they were cooked to order but they were still good. She was out of bush tea.
This place is the real deal. There’s so much flavor in their cooking. You will not be disappointed. The ladies were very helpful with questions we had regarding the menu. Please also try their local juice, it is amazing! Just a heads up, they only accept cash. There is an atm at the gate entrance of the parking lot.
My experience at Mommas Shack was beyond words. It was the highlight of my vacation! The curry chicken was so tender and fell of the bone, the red beans and rice were unlike any I’ve ever had, the Mac n cheese was so moist and creamy, and the papaya was incredible. It was one the single greatest meals I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. The price was perfect as well! I will tell everyone I know to come here and I personally cannot wait to be back! P.S. the Johnny Cakes & Fritters are to DIE FOR! TRY THEM!!!
My family and I had a lovely meal at Momma’s Shack. The owner was wonderful and very kind and hospitable. Everything was cooked fresh and tasted amazing. I had the BBQ chicken with rice beans and fried cauliflower. Chicken fell off the bone and was by far the best BBQ chicken I have ever had!!!!
Well well well, four days, twelve restaurants and finally ...the BEST food and drinks on the island. This is where the locals eat, folks. Business men and woman grabbing breakfast and lunch before work. Vegan options and real fruit juices. Ingredient number one, Ms. Carmen's well traveled skillset. Ingredient number two, local produce. I had: Kingfish, SAUTEED Collard greens (yes Mainland cousins) Potato salad, Eggplant and Johnny Cakes. My partner: Saltfish breakfast, Bush tea with Dumb bread. Juices, beet/ ginger, passion fruit, pineapple ginger. VI soul food, for real.
Food was good
You have to come and see Momma! The food was amazing and extremely fresh. Make sure that you try the drinks they were all extremely refreshing, especially the one with ginger. We had the green mango and the banana bread
Great food and even better vibes.
Delicious local food and natural juices. The BBQ chicken with the rice and papaya was amazing Vegetarian options: The veggie sausage with the fried cauliflower was delicious
Excellent Johnny cakes!!!!!
If you re in the mood for jonnycakes and bush tea, this is your spot! She will stuff your jonnycake with tuna, cheese, veggie sausage, all of your liking. The best chicken soup on island is served on Wednesday s. Her food is nicely seasoned with low salt. She serves all of your natural Caribbean drinks , except maubi , but such a vast drink menu you ll definitely find one to your satisfaction. Her banana fritters are perfect, as is her stew chicken. It s home cooking Caribbean cuisine. Love this spot and it s island touch.
Great quicknhealthy breakfast food. N local drinks. N great helpful staff
The warm welcoming with the good food is a recipe for a great day! Loved this place!
Local spot. Johnny cake was good! Homemade everything Food
Food is always good!
Loved it and the food was delicious will see you again
This restaurant was to die for!!! They even had many vegetarian options for me to eat. I got the macaroni, with vegetarian sausage, beans and rice, and greens. It was absolutely the best food I had on my vacation. The Chef was so welcoming and talked to us while we ate.
My wife and I went here today and it was the best food we ve had on the island so far! I had stew chicken, AMAZING mac and cheese, beans and rice, spinach, and the lovely worker talked me into trying breadfruit for the first time, which I liked! Extremely kind workers and huge portions - you will not leave hungry. We had a $200 fancy five star meal last night, and it was nowhere CLOSE to as good as our meal at Momma s Shack. Get there early. When they re out, they re out. They were out of fish when we got there but we ll be back (earlier in the day!) before we fly home. Make sure you get one of their homemade tropical drinks. The starfruit/passion fruit/ginger drink was outstanding.
Great portion and taste. Will definitely revisit
One of the best places for local breakfast. From fresh Johnny cakes, saltfish, dumbread, bush tea, local drinks, fry fish, fritters, boiled eggs, provisions, to the veggie burgers will keep you coming back for more. Top it all off with great pricing and good laughs.
Real good Jonny cakes and salt fish
I had a johnny cake and Saltfish & a coconut bake with tuna with a large bush tea! Best local breakfast on the island
Best Johnny cakes with.cheese and tuna. Also the local juices are great.
Wowza, this was good! They were sold out of some items when we got there, but everything we got was delicious! Shrimp, mac&cheese, collard greens, and papaya
Superior Saint Thomas Virgin Island Flavor. Keep up the good cooking. When on the Island PLEASE TRY IT!!
Johnny cakes were delicious as sandwich bread. Mama and staff were friendly and prices were great.
The joy one has when eating great food is found at Momma s Shack. Momma has a remarkable talent to make wholesome food the kind that keeps you coming back. We were visiting St. Thomas for six days and on the fifth day we tried her place, why did we do that! Now we have only one day to take in this excellent cuisine I m taking some for the plane ride back to the mainland. Her veggie sausage is THE BOMB!
Just had a wonderful curry chicken with rice and beans, mac and cheese, and carrots. I sat with Carmen, the owner. Best meal ever!
Food is always amazingly delicious plus local drinks. Best of all our kids love it too!
It feels like the island version of a standard diner or lunch counter. It is literally mostly a counter with some tables on the other side. They do all of your usual carb-filled breakfast items, then salads and sammichea for lunch. They have a case of Edy s ice cream. They don t have a full bar, but they have some basics. It s actually reasonably quick takeout, especially for a place where everything is on island time. It s right off the waterfront and behind the town square with the tourist trap tent vendors. My wrap was decent, nothing special, but freshly cooked chicken with lettuce and tomato and not so much dressing that it became a soggy mess. Nothing interesting by way of beverages, but there s a case of sodas, and I saw signs suggesting local beers on offer.
Mommas Shack, has personality and smile to greet her customers which goes right along with her delicious bushtea, tuna fish and johnny cake, and much more. So, dont leave St. Thomas without going by the one and only Mommas Shack! You wont regret it...
Local breakfast and lunch dishes.
We were wandering around the island, and stumbled across a local market. We wandered through all the food and found momma s shack. The ladies were so helpful in helping us pick out the best local food in their shop! It was so so so tasty and their juice was fresh and amazing! 10/10 recommend. And the ladies so sweet
The food at Momma s shack is described as classic Caribbean. I had the stewed chicken with beans and rice and it was very good. The food is made fresh every day and if you get there late some of it is gone because the supply is limited. Recommend stopping by and saying hi to Momma and picking up some good food.
