Dined here mid-October Tuesday evening. Our excellent waiter Will started us off with drinks and 2 appetizers, Mussels and Fried Calamari. My Spouse ordered Spinach Salad for her entrée. I got the Lobster Roll. We split the Sticky Date pudding for dessert. All the food was excellent. Recommend eating here when in the Charlottetown downtown.

We had the tuna crudo, oysters and their scallop special. Both were soon good. Staff was friendly and informative. You gotta check this place out.

Had the seafood boil, and coming from Ontario it definitely had the value right. It was $120 for me and it was a fair bit of food. If youre like me and can demolish a seemingly infinite amount of seafood then go to the all you can eat because its really nothing special flavor-wise. The scallops and lobster were over cooked and rubbery, and they should be flakey and delicate. The crab was delicious, and the mussels were as expected. Everything had a from the sea taste rather than a from a fish tank taste - which I expect to be the norm here anyway. Wife had the Nashville Chicken Sandwich and it was absolutely trash. So dont come here if your wife hates seafood and is settling for the chicken. She ended up eating a few bites and eating cheesecake instead, with a complaint back to the kitchen about the chicken. So that said, I would recommend the food because it seems to be the middle ground average experience for PEI and its cheap compared to other places in the country so you definitely get your moneys worth. But Id wager that theres much better food in PEI, like The Mill. I cant say Im disappointed, but Im not blown away either. Service was super slow, and we felt ignored half the time. Typical for PEI it seems.

went on a tuesday night and place was packed, didnt see our waiter for a good 10min after we sat down. I got the pork and scallop and my friend got the lobster dinner, food was as expected, its really nothing spetacular but its not bad.

Had a fish sandwich here while waiting to head to the airport for my flight. What a treat. This was one of the best fish sandwiches I ve had. Aside from this I had a beer. It was a beer

Absolutely outstanding experience

We stopped in for a drink on the patio mid afternoon. Temira, our server, was prompt, informative and charming; a wonderful ambassador for the Merchantman. The suggestion of a a Gahan brew (chose the IPA) and a reference to some good restaurants for this evening, in addition to the Merchantman, was an appreciated touch. Thanks Merchantman! We ll be back!

Good food

Walked into this restaurant and waited in the line, waited for about 15 mins with no question. After the couple before us were seated, there were 2 other groups in 3 and in 2 stepped in as well. The hostess straight seated the group of 3 before asking us, and when I questioned it, not even an attempt to explain or comfort us. She then offered the bar seat to the other couple, again without asking us. Totally ruined our night and we left without wasting more time.

Now two waitstaff know when PEI joined in Confederation. (1949) Sadly, you cannot trust them about ferry schedules. The chowder was great.

The portions are absurdly small. $22 for 3 bacon wrapped scallops ($22 meal seen in photo) . The mussels are tiny tiny. The server was polite but I won t be back. That s nuts!

We were on a cruise and decided to try some local food in Charlottetown. We picked a good one. Had the fish and chips. The fried fish was haddock and was terrific. Much better than the usual cod in fried fish. Pleasantly surprised. Wife had the mussles which was also very good. The service was provided by a friendly young girl. Have to admit I will never be in the town for a return visit but if I was it would be on top of may list to return.

It had a nice brick exterior and was a very lively restaurant inside. I ate fish and chips and cioppino. I had high expectations because the menu said that the cioppino contained snow crab, but the snow crab was boiled in its shell and placed in the soup, which left me disappointed. This was my last meal in Charlottetown, so I was a little disappointed. (July 2024)

Great location downtown , stones throw from the waterfront. Excellent selection of local beer and wide variety of seafood. Prices very reasonable

1 lb of Mussels, Crab dip with Kettle chips and Pita, one side order Sweet potato fries. All good was Great, large portions and Fresh tasting. Very Worthwhile walk from Cruise Port.

Just walked out of this place on your first visit to PEI. Took a seat with my older parents, wife and 2 year old. Not one person came to our table to acknowledge or take our order for over 10 minutes, so we left. Disappointing considering people in PEI are otherwise so friendly. Just to add, the place was not busy and fairly empty at the time and no one acknowledged us while leaving the restaurant. We noticed 2 waiters chatting at the front door and 2 others cleaning tables around us but, not one of them said hello or asked if we had been served. While walking out, the two at the front door disbursed as we approached, not one of them said good evening or asked why we were leaving. Just a sad sad customer experience

Had family visiting us from Ontario and wanted to show them PEI as we reside in Shediac, NB. After checking restaurants online and seeing all the positive reviews this restaurant did not disappoint. The food was amazing one of the best meals we have ever had and could not stop saying how we enjoyed our food and cannot wait to go back, worth the drive just to eat there. Will our server was awesome. Wish we had one here in Shediac

We are here visiting from Alberta, and Merchant Man came highly recommended from a friend s friend for their Caesar s. Our friends we were dining with are from New Brunswick and both had never been to Merchant Man but were looking forward to trying it. It was busy there as it was a Friday evening and the lovely young waitress was trying her best to find us a table that would accommodate us and three little ones. We were told that she was going to check and see if their live music was going to be coming as it was 40 mins past their arrival time and if they weren t coming we could use that table. While she was checking we were going to sit at the table (picnic table) to wait for an answer while also trying to keep our kids out of the entrance way and the manager approached us telling us we were not welcome to sit there as there was going to be live music. We told him that we understood that they were waiting to hear back but we would just wait until he heard back. He was extremely rude and ignorant to the fact that we would just step aside and wait and as we moved out of the way he was mumbling under his breath about us. It was beyond unprofessional and terrible customer service. After experiencing that we chose to just leave as I would rather not spend my money in an establishment with a manager like that. We thanked the young waitress for her time and customer service and chose to go elsewhere. I would like to point out that after we finished our meal at another restaurant there was no live music. So the restaurant lost out on live music, as well as a large bill that we would have had. It was very apparent to me that the restaurant is successful thanks to their lovely wait staff, but the manager could use a lesson or two in manners and respect. I hope someone else is able to enjoy the food and drinks that came highly recommended to us, but unfortunately were met with an awful manager.

Reservations a must at dinner time

Looking to add to our already delightful experience in PEI, we chose this place at random and were pleasantly surprised. Lucky enough to have Kayla as our server, greeting us even without a reservation and knocked it out of the park. Surprisingly affordable while being shockingly elegant. Large portion sizes paired with locally brewed beer selections made for a perfect evening. Thank you to all front of house & hats off to the kitchen staff. 10/10, no notes.

Merchantman is just fair, with a nice view and plenty of patio seating both on the street and behind the building. Their menu is pretty limited for those with dietary restrictions, having just ONE vegan main available (a salad is not a main), and a limited gluten free selection. If youre big on fish based dishes, youll have a great time. If you have dietary restrictions, please look elsewhere. Vegetarian options: VERY limited vegetarian options

Slow Service everytime. Refill the water and take old dishes away for crying out loud, this is basic stuff. Waited 45 mins for a hamburger....hello...is this thing on?

We had a totally wonderful first experience at Merchantman. Everything (including the mocktails) was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. You might not think of getting steak at a seafood joint, but it was to die for. Even the potatoes were next level. We look forward to returning next time we are in Charlottetown.

Recently visited twice in less than a week, once inside for a private party and once outside in their fenced patio. Both experiences were great, food was awesome, service was awesome.

Consistently great food. The tuna, nachos and chicken burger are all exceptionally good. Many gluten-free options but could use more non-seafood dishes.

We actually enjoyed their outdoor patio The Merchantman Next Door...very chill atmosphere drinks were amazing staff was perfect...and they are open until 1030 Saturday nights they have all the right elements for a fun casual uet classy dining drinking experience and if u get chilly they even have a patio fire pit...would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great priced night out with friends

Had the fish and chips, smoked salmon naan, and calamari. All were amazing. Friday night also had great live music with a guitarist. Great vibe and location Kid-friendliness: Sitting outdoors was kid Friendly. Space to get up and move around freely.

Hubby got the Cioppino which was topped with a large cluster of snow crab!! Perfect meal for Fathers Day! I had the PEI mussels and Grandson, the fish and chips. All was excellent, we sat outside Next Door. Great local beer too! Too bad we live 1,600 miles away. I ll be longing for a return visit.

We had a lovely evening there! Nice atmosphere on the terrace. We shared starters: a board with different seafood products, scallops with bacon, mussels and crab cake. A real delight for the taste buds! Our waitress was attentive throughout our meal.

I hate to write a bad review on anyone s business but this one deserves one. So let s start with the positive. The food was not bad but way to expensive for what we received. The atmosphere is very nice and inviting. The hostess was very nice. The waiter was ok. She failed when things got hard and uncomfortable and did not own the situation I am about to describe. The 4 of us sat down and ordered our drinks, appetizers, and food at the same time. The drinks and appetizers came out quick and then the waiting started. After about 25 minutes we asked the waitress when our food was coming, she said soon and we did not see her again until the food came 20 mins later. At 30 minutes my wife went and talked to the manager and he was trying to explain why the food was taking so long. He indicated they were busier than usual and the kitchen was backed up. The people next to use sat down after us and got there food in 20 mins so that excuse doesn t hold water. My wife gave him 10 mins to get the food out or we are leaving. It came in 9. We closed our tab with no I am sorry for the delay and we ruined your meal from the waiter or the manager. We received ZERO compensation for the delay and the warm beer. We paid and we left. I will make sure to let the Delta hotel know what happened and of course Yelp. Avoid this restaurant. There are a lot of other restaurants in the area that will provide better service and better value for your money.

Too pricy

To start, I will say the restaurant was very busy, so I suspect our experience was not typical. We did go during unusually warm summer weather, but found the restaurant became increasingly warm and muggy while we were there. The food was quite good (lobster seafood boil, fish & chips) and our server was very pleasant, but even with a reservation it took an hour for the food to arrive at our table after our orders were taken. After a full day outdoors with our grandchild, we found it an exceptional wait.

Lobster overcooked with green stuff in it. Raw oysters not as great as other restaurants. The only consolation is there Classic Cesar drink and the live musician. Not worth the value.

What a great experience! Had to wait a bit for our table but it was worth it! The food was delicious and makes PEI proud. We had the Surf n Turf, Mussels and Calamari, and all was fantastic. Our server, Allie (sp?), was so nice and very attentive. A beautiful way to end a rainy and dreary day!

We only had one night on PEI but we are glad we chose Merchantman for dinner! We enjoyed their oysters to start ($20 for 10 after 8pm) followed by the seafood boil. Every single item in the boil was cooked to perfection and we thought the value for money was equal to the products we received in the dish. Enjoyed a bottle of local (Canadian) wine with our meal, Benjamin Bridge Tidal Bay, which we later found out is an appellation unique to Nova Scotia. Parking: Parking was free at the time of year we visited but would be wise to check signs carefully during the summer.

Cant speak on most of the menu because we came in for the burger love but it was really good! Was at the tail end of the lunch rush so we didnt have to wait for a table and no big wait for the food. Servers were friendly and prompt. Will go back.

My experience with the lobster, scallops, mussels, and seafood boil was nothing short of extraordinary. Each element was impeccably cooked, with the lobster being tender, the scallops perfectly seared, and the mussels bursting with flavor. We ordered the baked and iced oysters. Definitely will try the baked oyster again very delicious and its a must try for everyone. We ordered fish and chips and Love burger which were both good. The vibe was good we sat at the bar and the staff were very friendly which i liked very much and asking us all the time if we need anything and how the food is and had smiles on their face

I revisited Merchantman Fresh Seafood and Oyster Bar after a couple of years, and Im pleased to say the quality remains outstanding. The oysters, especially the Rustico, Cascumpec, and North Lake varieties, are simply awesome. If youre a fan of oysters and find yourself in PEI, this is a must-visit spot. The cozy atmosphere complements the delicious and fresh seafood perfect.

Always a favourite of mine when Im in Charlottetown. For some reason, even though the place was 80%+ empty (mid-afternoon, weekday), service was extremely slow. Not characteristic, and fortunately, we werent under any deadlines, but slow lethargic service is never a good thing for the long-term viability of any restaurant or pub.

Merchantability was reccomended by the lady at our hotel desk. We ordered for delivery. I got the crab dip and haddock tacos. My wife got the sweet potato currie soup and the calamari. The soup was fantastic. The calamari had so much salt on it neither one of us could eat it. The crab dip was the same. So salt neither good eat it. The fish tacos were soggy but the haddock was good. Basically $100 + dollars went to the trash. Sorry really not impressed with out first time with Merchantman..

I was ignored for 20 minutes after being seated. The host stood in the corner, talking to another member of staff (possibly the manager), neither of them doing anything. Neighbouring tables were greeted, served water and drinks. Nothing for me, not even eye contact. The food that passed by my table while I was waiting looked to be plated haphazardly and without care. So I walked out. Ignore single women at your peril. I m a professional cook who had money to spend on a nice meal, so I simply found another place that wanted my business.

We were storm stayed in Charlottetown this past weekend (Feb 3rd) and we made a last minute reservation for 15 people. We were fortunate to be seated in the private dining room. We were greeted immediately by the hostess and seated within minutes. Our waitress, Temira, quickly took our drink order and meal orders. She was seamless in how she served a large table and she got everything right! She checked in often and made sure we had a great dining experience. We will highly recommend the Merchantman and we will definitely be back! Thank you

We both enjoyed the seafood chowder. Buy a bowl, the appetizer (cup size) is not a good value. A few days after our visit we are at Simms for lunch and they dont even offer chowder bowls and it isnt as good as the merchantman.

The Merchantman was a place we always wanted to try but its hard for us to come down town when we have been so busy. It did not disappoint. The wife got the Seafood Pappardelle which she really liked. I dont really like seafood and I thought it was great. Our kid got the ribs and a side of house cut fries. He devoured them and tried to stab our fingers with his fork anytime we tried to encroach upon his plate. Im assuming that meant he liked it. I got the striploin with seasonal vegetables and the potatoes pave. It was fantastic. The steak was really tender and a good cut. The glaze from the mushrooms were amazing. Our server was Temira and she was the best. She went above and beyond to make sure we got our food exactly how we wanted it. She was very friendly and definitely made us feel welcome. Because of the quality of service and food, we will 100% come back.

The salmon naan is so good. Its a must try! The lobster roll seems famous in PEI! The lobster meat is firm.

Based on the reviews, we decided to try this place for dinner. The food was competent ... but it felt like it was geared towards the tourist trade. It just felt like it was mass produced and there isnt a lot care put into it. The seafood cakes were somewhat dry and overly curried ... as if it was trying to hide something. Both the lobster roll and seafood pappardelle could do with a little more seafood. Considering the price on the menu, I was expecting more :-(

Food was delicious, seafood was fresh as expected. The spicy margarita was enjoyable as well. Definitely recommend the summer salad as a side versus the typical fires.

I dont normally complain about a restaurant. But I believe these reviews are not the best for this place. The lobster option only served as a cold dish, which to me in P.E.I should be unacceptable as it is a local cuisine. The coleslaw that came with the lobster tasted as though it was from a mixed bag, and they just added Mayonnaise to it. It was missing salt pepper and the apple cider vinegar that normally goes in a traditional slaw. The potatoes were warm and tasty, but with all the mayo and green onions, it took away from the famous red skin PEI grown potatoes. The fish and chips (haddock) again was poorly seasoned batter. Although they came out nice and hot, the fries were layered underneath and became soggy. Overall, our experience was not the best. I do not recommend coming to this restaurant. There are better options out there.

We had high hopes based on the reviews but left very disappointed. The food didn t taste fresh . The lobster was served chilled. The calamari was sub par and the summer salad lacked flavor. It was actually one of our worst meals in PEI. Would not recommend.

We ate on the terrace and it didnt felt like we were downtown anymore, very nice decor and atmosphere. We had some wonderful recommendation from our server and everything was excellent. I would recommend to anybody in a heartbeat!

Visited this restaurant on our first night and overall good experience. Based on the restaurant look and feeling higher end we didn t really feel like we got that in the service or food. Presentation for the food was average but the food itself was delicious. Surprisingly no espresso martini is offered. We got the surf and turf appetizers (portion was tiny for the cost), halibut (portion and taste was good) and roasted cauliflower (could ve cooked for longer, overall good). Was hoping for a better overall experience based on the price and look of the restaurant but enjoyed our time.

Had an absolute blast at The Merchantman, next door. We were greeted right away and served by Temira who was amazing, friendly and a great hostess! She made our first experience so good that we had to return back a second time while we were on our trip to PEI. Thank you Temira, you absolutely rock! Also, the fish tacos are out out this world. Sat at the bar and had some mussels and the sea food cakes. It was all very good and the bartender was very nice!

I came because the lobster roll was highly recommended online. It was disappointing. Cold, no flavour (just salty) also congealed fat, from butter??? The fries were overdone. Expensive for what I got. Excellent service, though.

Lobster on a hotdog bun? Are you kidding me? There was hardly any lobster. More of a lobster salad with very little lobster. You call that a lobster roll? Why is it that you got so many bad reviews about your lobster roll and you still haven t done anything different about it? In fact, you actually say your lobster roll is good, which is the food that you get the most complaints about. Service was not very good either which goes along with your lobster roll. Very disappointing.

Visiting from Ontario second time eating at this amazing Restaurant Service was exceptional second time around as well. Thank you Payton for a wonderful experience and Tamara for such an amazing greeting chat and interaction you also made our day. Great place! Knowledgeable server and the food was amazing! Gave them a 4 only because I asked for removal of a vegetable from my salad and it was requested but the kitchen didn t comply. But the dressing was amazing!! Try the calamari. It was fantastic.

Great eat-at-the bar atmosphere, which is what I usually look for. Polished off a few oyster-topped caesars and a pound and a half bug while chatting with some fun patrons and a great bartender.

Arrived in Charlottetown on the MSC Meraviglia. Pre booked this restaurant before leaving Australia, which was a great idea, as we saw a few people turned away at lunch. Seems this restaurant is also very popular with the locals. Ally was our server, and her service was excellent. Very prompt and the individual meals came out at a nice pace. I would certainly recommend the oysters, particularly the oysters with iced sorbet, the lobster roll was good, and the fish n chips were also very nice. Definitely worth a stop here, but I would book a table to avoid disappointment.

I wish the staff was inclusive, me and my friends had to wait for about 10 mins and no one came up but I just checked if their phone was working, surprisingly they came to attend the phone. Wondering if this is how they treat every customer. Also very thankful cause we got to go to Lobster on the Wharf and attend the patio rather than spending our time in a not so inclusive and not very welcoming place.

I have never had a better hamburger in my life. The 6oz hamburger on the lunch menu with the house salad with maple garlic dressing WOW. High quality ingredients & service. Brandon was over and above in personality and detail.

We had the surf & turf (scallops & pork belly), which was delicious. Also ordered the calamari & mussels. The mussels varied in quality. Some were quite dry and small, others were large and much more flavourful. The Shuckin Caesar was awesome. Overall, it was a good experience.

Great oysters from the Prince Edward Island. Today, they had Valley Pearl and Pinnet River. After eating 20, we asked 10 more!!! Food

Fantastic seafood! Halibut was to die for.

10/10 all around. My taste buds are thanking me for going to Merchantman tonight. The service was absolutely phenomenal as well. Will definitely be back next time Im on the island. Vegetarian options: The sweet potato curry soup is to die for.
