3025 Lougheed Hwy., Coquitlam, BC V3B 6S2, Canada
Relaxed eatery offering cooked & raw Japanese specialties plus a small sake & shochu list.
I ordered Bento Box C lunch special (sashimi) and chose beef teriyaki with it. I didn't realize it was $1.50 extra when choosing beef teriyaki over chicken teriyaki until I saw my bill. Perhaps, I missed it on the menu. They gave a generous amount of tempura. The Sashimi was average. The tables in the the middle of the room are very close together and it feels a bit cramped. The servers were friendly and we did get our food fairly quick. Overall, it was okay.
Their karei karaage bento is amazing, finished every last crunchy bones! Too bad their fish bento is only available during lunch time.
One of the best Japanese restaurant in the area for sure. They keep it very authentic. I take my clients here for a nice meal all the time and I know I can easily impress them here. Highly recommend!
A dependable sushi spot with prompt service and fresh ingredients. The nigiri was particularly enjoyable. It’s a good option if you’re nearby.
Hidden Gem!!!!!!!!!! My friend told me to go Matoi Sushi for real, authentic Japanese food, and she is right! I feel like I’m in Japan again! Will definitely go back again with family and friends
I have been going here for a long time and I highly recommend it! Every time I go, the service is amazing and the sushi is always the best. Not only that, the hot food is also delicious.
This sushi was super fresh, affordable and with a short wait time! My partner and I were STARVING when we got to Matoi and were really craving something fast and they were quick and tasty with their rolls. We got two of their sushi combos, some beer and some sunomono and it was all under $40! For budget friendly sushi that is this delicious, we are definitely going to be coming back again soon!
TAKE OUT AVAILABLE! New cozy outdoor heated patio. Vegetarian friendly. Come here regularly. Offers traditional japanese foods other than just sushi. Oden, grilled marinated cod, ramen salad, chawan mushi, tako yaki, skewers..etc. The sushi is very good, too -- profesional sushi chef quality sushi, very traditional style, not"fast food" style. I would avoid getting the amaebi as they had been ~slimy~ a few times. It's not a large place so expect a line up, esp. Friday dinner.
I was in the emergency needed a epi pen shot on the 18th just before Christmas if i didnt get that shot at eagle ridge i not be breathing Im highly allergic to red snapper aka TAImy parents are so am i the woman their said my food was safe I ordered ebi sunomono California rolls oyster motitaki miso Ramen with added chicken and tea left the restraunt throat felt like it was on started choking gasping for breath chest was tight could not walk properly was rushed by uber to eagle ridge hospital had the shot with in mins or I be not here I had the shot my tempature plummeted my heart rate droped I started to shake felt frozen but alive one experience I never want again if your allergic to red snapper do not come here your life depends on it unless u got one of those over expensive epi pens that not everyone can afford to get To the restraunt DO NOT CONTACT ME ! Dietary restrictions: They did not follow my serious life altering allergic restrictions
Great place, the food is very authentic and very good
Very friendly and polite. Love menus that have pictures of dishes for newbs like myself. Family friendly for sure!
Came in and warmly greeted by staff both sushi chefs and server staff. The table next to us ordered home style Japanese entrées with a side of chicken karage to share - the crispy aromas wafted over and we ordered a plate to start! We ordered saba mackerel, salmon sashimi, negitoro roll, California roll and two pieces of tuna toro nigiri. The salmon sashimi arrived first - it reminded me of homemade salmon sashimi from frozen farmed salmon from Costco; the color was light orange and not very firm to touch. The star of the show was for sure the chicken karage! In my opinion, the quality of food has noticeably declined over the years. Perhaps the status quo of being (imo) the top Japanese cuisine in the region for such a long time has worn out the staff...Just my guess.
Been to their store once, it was nice so I ordered delivery today. I ordered assorted sashimi but their amaebi tastes awful because it s not fresh. I am very disappointed at this because I believe they are owned by real Japanese, sad to see them use unfresh ingredients and cheap ingredients (ika) to fool the customers
Just dropped in here by chance but surprising gem tucked away close to the mall. Lots of authentic fare brought in from Japan. Was quite happy with the toro as above what you get except at super high end. Would go again for sure.
Amazing sushi . The best!
Best Japanese food in coquitlam!
Informations are wrong and not updated !! We went there on Sunday evening and it was closed. !!! We waste money for taxi. Not serious
Matoi is one of my favourite sushi places in Coquitlam. If you want to eat there during peak times (like a Friday night) you are gonna have to wait a loooong time! Like they will say 30-35min wait for take-out and you will end up waiting an hour maybe more. spicy salmon rolls are bomb.
excellent service excellent food Food
super authentic and super underated sushi place. ive been going here since i was born and the taste has never changed, and neither have the two sushi chefs. the only thing is that due to the pandemic the portions have gotten rather small, but delicious all the same. all the meals have a real Japanese taste. i rlly recommend for sushi lovers. favorite dishes are chawanmushi, yam tempura roll and nabeyaki udon.
Everythings good
As always great and fresh sushi. Dont forget to order from the fresh sheets menu. All the combos r a great deal and the service is great too. And dont forget the dog friendly patio.
Good food and friendly atmosphere.
Matoi Sushi is a hidden gem that offers an exceptional dining experience for sushi enthusiasts. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that sets the stage for an unforgettable meal. Ambiance: The decor is modern yet cozy, with a subtle touch of traditional Japanese elements. The clean and minimalist design creates a relaxing environment, perfect for both casual dining and special occasions. Service: The staff at Matoi Sushi are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. They go above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels welcome and well taken care of. The service is prompt, and the waitstaff are always ready to provide recommendations and answer any questions about the menu. Food Quality: The sushi at Matoi Sushi is nothing short of spectacular. The fish is incredibly fresh, and each piece of sushi is meticulously crafted with precision and care. The menu offers a wide variety of options, from classic nigiri and sashimi to creative rolls and special dishes. Highlights include the melt-in-your-mouth toro, the flavorful uni, and the innovative signature rolls that are both visually stunning and delicious. Presentation: The presentation of the dishes is impeccable, with each plate looking like a work of art. The attention to detail in the plating enhances the overall dining experience and makes each bite even more enjoyable.
Brought my fiance here for their bday dinner and was disappointed. The fish in our sushi and the sashimi were still about 70% FROZEN. It tasted like eating a chunk of frozen butter. I think this is highly unacceptable with improper thawing methods. We were recommended to come to this restaurant and it didnt live up to whatever hype it has.
Real Japanese style food. Service and atomisphere are also Japanese. If you need real Japanese dishes, this is the place you should go.
A traditional sushi place. The service is good. I enjoyed their lunchbox. Sashimi are fresh and generous. Will return.
Only got some sushi to go, but it tasted great, and the wait was not that bad, but it did take a bit (only because it had 50-60 people eating so it was very fast for the amount of people). Went to multiple sushi places before this, but they were all closed. This one was the first to be open on a Friday at about 6:45. Vegetarian options: I got a California roll. (No fish, just avocado and cucumber. ) Parking: Parking lot, right outside the door and we got a spot 2 meters from the small fence. Kid-friendliness: There was nothing to make it un-friendly.
Japanese sushi restaurant with a traditional and good atmosphere The quality is good for the price and the food is delicious.
Best sushi around this neighborhood, can rival any downtown locations. Never had a bad cut of fish in their sushi, ( hard chew), their selection of drinks, and specialty menu is always available. ( at least when I was there) . It s a nice blend between homemade and restaurant quality! If you buy chefs beers, they will treat you with off menu snacks. ( sometimes)
It is so refreshing to go to a Japanese restaurant and actually know that theres Japanese people working there. I am never disappointed going to Matoi. Definitely my favourite sushi place around.
Food quality is always great and delicious. Services are always nice and friendly. Vegetarian options: Variety options for vegetarian food Parking: Very convenient
Quality
Excellent service and food quality.
Food was awesome. We got a ton of delicious food for a very reasonable price. Not a ton of room in the restaurant so you may want to call ahead.
Turley the Japanese food
Great selection of daily specials. Food prices are on the low side for this quality. Sushi and sashimi was fresh. I highly recommend Amaebi and hamachi.
Awesome value, service and food choices
We really enjoy our dinners at Matoi. The food is fresh, service is fast and both are of high quality. This most recent trip we brought along our 2 year old daughter. Staff was very accommodating, they have booster seats, plastic plates and plastic cutlery. She loved the experience so much shes been practicing with chopsticks since. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a solid Japanese food experience.
The food is really good i would recommend!!
Special dishes/soups are great!
Unfortunately the price went up quite a bit. Spots near the door can get really cold
A great place to sit down have a chat with friends and eat good sushi. I bought: Takoyaki, Party B, and silky egg with Sea urchin. Overall an amazing sushi restaurant!
We ordered the nabeyaki udon and it arrived after ~45 min, and only after we asked a server to check on the order. We also ordered two of the karei karaage and the fish portions were skimpy. No servers came by to check on us or refill our tea. Otherwise, the flavour of the food was decent, and the booth we sat in was comfortable.
I was not impressed at all with the sushi. The tuna nigiri was ice cold, like still thawing out. The server said to wait until it warms up. The dynamite roll was awful: the tempura prawn was super tiny about the size of a dime and the roll was mostly rice with a bit of cucumber and lettuce (?) on the edge. No avocado and no flavour. The ebi nigiri was dry and also ice cold. The salmon nigiri was okay. I was very disappointed. I should have read the reviews more carefully. It seems the good reviews are old, and people aren t that impressed anymore.
Good specialty food and servcies. Very Satisfied.
Went there for dinner. I could not even have a conversation with my wife in front of me because of just 2 Koreans sitting at the bar talking too loudly with a sushi-man who seemed to be the owner of the restaurant. According to my friends, this is a frequent occurrence. Food was ok. Could have been better for sure. The Sashimi was not as fresh as I had expected given that it was listed as the Chefs Special I gave the restaurant two stars solely because the servers were very kind and did a good job.
We ordered several nigiri sushi, natto maki, and seaweed salad. We both feel sick now. While we were eating the nigiri, the flavor was not quite right, so now we are worried it was not fresh. The rice of the nigiri was super dry and hard, not at all good for sushi rice. The server never came back to fill up our tea a single time. We are surprised because it seemed like three of the staff there were native Japanese, but my partner (from Japan) wanted to say it was the worst Japanese food experience in her life. In total, we paid almost 100$. At first we were excited because the menu has a lot of uncommon selections, but it is not possible for that to make up for the bad quality taste and sick stomach feeling that comes after. Parking: Lots next to store.
One of our favourite Japanese Restaurants - Authentic and wonderful selections of fresh catch.. Harry and Kathy love Matoi!
This place has a notice of closure sign on the front door. Eek.
Actually rating cannot trust! Tonight I ordered shrimp tempura, two sushi combos, one totally chicken rice combo and sashimi salmon rice for four peoples, off to pick up the food open the packing, I so disappointed, tempura is sticky not crispy, others dishes portion is very small, sushi A Comb and B are similar no different....unfortunately, need to go out buy fried chickens because the foods too little, cannot fill my stomach. I will never go again and not recommend. Sorry forget take the picture for the food because me and all of my friends very hungry....
Terrible service. Never come back!!!
Made a reservation for 5 pm. Took about 15 minutes to be seated in. The food took a lot longer than expected. The place was busy, so it was no big deal. What really was unprofessional when we were told to basically hurry up since there is another reservation for our table while still eating, around 550 to 6 pm. On top of that, we were given our bill a few minutes later once again while still eating all by the instructions of the older waitress. Wish we were told that there was a time limit for dining in in the beginning. So basically we had about half an hour to eat a few hundred dollars worth of food. The rest of the waitresses were good, and the food was excellent
Waiting 1 hour for food and then they told me just had 10 minutes left to eat. Bad service ever. Never come back!!
Went there for Mothers Day. Booked a table a week in advance. Got there when they opened at 5pm. 7+2 highchairs. We were seated in the room near the washrooms. We started with drinks and appies. Ebi sunomono, Miso soup, and a few other items. Soup promptly came out. The sunomono and other items came about 40 mins later. No quarrel there. I can see they were busy. Ordered more food as other items were coming out. About an hour after our arrival, a waitress told us we only have 12 mins left before we HAVE to leave, as there was another reso for our table. She also said we were not allowed to order any more. We were, obviously, shocked. I asked to speak with the manager. I believe her name is Yoshimi? Told us cause its Mothers Day, there is a time limit of 1 and a half hour for the table. I asked Why wasnt I informed when I made the reso? She apologized for making a mistake. So basically, we reserved a table at this restaurant. Barely got to eat anything. Sat there waiting the majority of the time. And unbeknownst to us, had a time limit in effect. Thank you Matoi! For ruining Mothers Day dinner. I would give it 0 stars. But theres no option for it.
Never had any issues here my wife is on a keto diet so she cannot have rice. They are able to make cones for my wife with no rice. Not a lot of places can do that. Their food is always fresh. Yes the portion is small but the quality is good. As I have been working with several restaurants in my college days all restaurants have a time limit of 1 and a half to 2 hours. Is an unwritten rule. If it is a quiet night then sure stay past the time limit no one will care but during any celebration or holidays yes the rules are enforced to make sure people booking after can dine Im as well. Depending when the restaurant closes on a busy night we prefer to have 3 to 4 sets of customers per table. So yea to all those who complain about having a time limit on mothers day just know this on special days and holidays and weekends is when restaurants make money. On week night they are lucky if they even break even.
This is heaven. Hireberu A fresh restaurant.
Wow! Wow! Wow! The food here is first class! Some of the best sushi I ve ever tasted! I love the vibe here it s so fun to sit at the counter and I saw private eating areas that would be amazing for groups. I ve only been there once and I can t wait to go back!
The place is good, everything they sell is very fresh but the assorted variety we ordered had some that were not to our liking. The soy sauce is not enough for the number of pieces. Friendly staff. They close at 8:30 p.m.
Food is pretty consistent, they do run out of some kinds of fish occasionally... Which isnt a terrible thing, it shows they dont overstock the raw stuff. I did have an issue a while back with their patio seating.. the restaurant was empty and they would only let us sit at 1 out 6 tables outside.
Just had dinner with my daughter on her birthday. Shes satisfied by ordering two dynamite rolls Nice experience by sitting outside patio, its so chill Food
Hit and a miss. My family comes here quite a lot though, and theres a lot of sentimental values for me here.
We lucked upon this gem while on a shopping trip and were pleasantly surprised by the high quality behind the modest exterior. Exceptional menu well-executed by warm and helpful staff. The interior is cool and tasteful, put together with care and thought. Would go out of my way to visit this again. Child friendly too, appreciated with our restive one year old. Superb.
I ordered chef special sashimi, but I did not feel any special compare with other restaurant, moreover sashimi are not fresh and hard to chew. Now I got understand, why many customer just ordered bento box. Give 2 star because servers were very kind.
One of my favourites
Authentic Japanese cuisine. The chicken karaage is good, the sashimi is high quality. If you really like fish, I recommend the deep fried whole sole, an interesting dish I havent seen elsewhere.
Im not usually to leave negative comments but Im sorry for $20 to get a roll made of 4 small pieces and gomae thats dripping with water and 0 flavour is unacceptable. 1 start is 1 too much!!
How can you charge $9.50 for such miserly chicken? I filled up on the rice and cucumbers but I paid for a chicken teriyaki roll at $9.50 plus tax !
spicy sockeye salmon roll and chicken karaage are delicious
Good sushi.
Still one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in the Coquitlam area! They are often busy so I recommend reservations or by beating the usual dining times. They do also do takeout and it s great for grabbing dinners and entertaining guests. We often enjoy the bento sets the most but their rice bowls and sashimi always make us happy. My dad loves their deep fried whole sole. This time we opted for the oyako don and salmon belly (google won t let me add the older pictures I have unfortunately). Definitely give them a visit if you haven t been!
First time here to get a takeout. Ordered chicken teriyaki meal and chicken katsu. The food was disappointing as the chicken pieces are fattening (less meaty). Not sure if we were unlucky to get bad parts of chicken or they always serve fatty chicken (with the skin, they were kinda slimy). Maybe next time, I ll try different items. Service at the take out door was ok though luckily it wasn t raining..
Still one of our favourite sushi joint to go to in the entire Lower Mainland. Overall and on average, they always have one of the best sushi, udon, sashimi, miso soup and Katsu Curry around. Price is on par with other sushi places but you will get a very consistently good experience here. Lunch time is a great time to go as it is less busy and they have some great lunch sets.
Delicious food. Great value friendly staff, and genuine Japanese menu.
Sushi was good. Good deal
The best sushi in town!
Best all around Japanese restaurant in Tri Cities. Owners and servers are nice and friendly, food is always consistently good. Price is reasonable.
I heard that this restaurant is one of the famous japanese style sushi place. However, I dont like the japanese style rolls which you may like but I didnt. The taste of the foods were very simple and light. The portion of the dishes are small. Compared to the other sushi restaurant, I definately feel that the portion is small because my kids were not even felt full after eating all the menu we got. After spending close to $100.00, I still have to cook 3 bags of ramen for my family for our family dinner.
Friendly and polite staff. Ordered bento box. Really enjoyed it. Everything seemed very fresh.
Ive eaten here a couple times and havent been disappointed. Had the Curry Katsu.
It was so delicious that I visited twice for the omakase course.
Our favourite sushi place in the Tri-cities. An amazing selection of less common sashimi. Always very fresh and well presented. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions we have only ever had take away but on a future visit to the west coast this will definitely be on the list of dine in venues.
Service is good, the food itself is ok. At least I thought it was ok until an hour later I realized I had food poisoning. Nothing too severe to file a complaint, but I wont go there again
Wait for food for more than 25 mins
I have been there a couple of times and they are definitely Japanese as when I go in there, I am able to practice my Japanese with the Japanese Staff. Matoi Sushi Restaurants Prices are reasonable and Portions are quite good. Also, this Sushi Restaurants Food is Delicious too. Ikimashita soshite kono Hito wa Nihonjin to imasu. Kono Sushiya no naka ni Nihonjin Tenin wa to issho ni watashi no Nihongo wa Renshu Hanasu koto ga Dekimasu. Kono Matoi Sushiya no Nedan wa Yoroshii Desu soshite Tabemono wa Okina Kesa Desu. Subete Kono Sushiya no Tabemon wa Ouishi Desu! Actually, for the past two years, since the Japanese Powell Street Festival has had to be Cancelled due to Covid19, I made going there in early Hachi Getsu (August) as my way to do a small Powell O-Matsuri Festival during which I enjoyed the Service & Food.
Delicious if a little pricy. Seafood Hot Pot is to die for with tons of seafood including several crab legs! Really good food and always a great experience.
Very good sushi and fresh sashmi for a reasonable price.
Such lovely and wonderful service!
Love this place always quality sushi
I really enjoyed the sushi here! The tuna tataki was seared perfectly and so fresh, the rolls was nicely presented and tightly rolled. I also got the grilled mackerel which was not over cooked.
As big consumers of Japanese cuisine, we like Matoi sushi because they have uni and Mirugai (more than other places). The staff are efficient and accommodating when requests are made.
Amazing sushi, fresh and it does sushi how Japan does it. They ask if you want wasabi inside the sushi. A bit pricey but definitely worth it!
Loved it. Great food and service. Our daughter in law lived in Japan for five years and her comment was the menu offers items you only see in Japan and she hasnt been able to get in the lower mainland before. We spent $30 per person which included a special cold Saki that was perfect. We have eaten there many times and have never been disappointed.
We had dinner tonight at Matoi Sushi in Coquitlam and it was our lucky day because they had both live uni *and* geoduck! Often, those aren t available from the menu when we ask for them. For myself, I ordered Kaki Fry (deep-fried oysters) and the Deluxe Assorted Sashimi. Everything was SO fresh and delicious I especially loved the amaebi tonight because it was spectacularly sweet and flavourful
Is it because its Easter? I went there thinking It was almost full Since I was alone, I was guided to the counter. I was surprised when I saw the recommendation. Its written in Kanji and English. The owner seems to be a mix of Japanese and Korean. Thats why there are kanji written on it. Also, the menu for hokke kama was written in romaji, so it was easy for me to understand. What I ate is a special flyer It was topped with salmon roe and raw shrimp. I was glad that there was no furikake included in the flyer of the Korean-owned restaurant. The eggs are not ready-made, but seem to be homemade tamagoyaki. There is a wide selection of lunch menus, and I also want to try atka mackerel and saury. Im also happy that there is chawanmushi. Next time I go, Im thinking of ordering a bowl of salmon and salmon roe. It was very delicious
This used to be my favourite place for sushi. Unfortunately this time around the rice for the rolls and a bowl I had, tasted like it wasn t fresh and had been sitting around all day. Aswell my gyozas had a lot of water in them that squirted out and burnt me every time I took a bite. The portions they have though are good and the customer service is always great. They also recently created an outside seating area which is really nice for the summer. Pricing I believe is fair and not over priced.
Great place. Today we found for the first time a gaf... one the shrimp tempura was not deveined, got a new one with no objection
Great little place. Very good sushi. Still the best sushi place I know of. Kid-friendliness: Kids are welcome. Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair parking and restaurant access
I don t recommend this place. Staff is rude, they charge you more than what s on the menu and when you complain they say their menu isn t updated. Whaaaat??? Also, the presentation is terrible and the taste is one of the worst in town. Finally, I asked not to send chopsticks and soy sauce, as well to send the wasabi separately. They put the wasabi together with the sushi and sent chopsticks and soy sauce.
My go to sushi place. Best sushi place around and even better service. The tea is always filled and they always check on you.
Authentic Japanese food, one of the few Japanese restaurants that are run by Japanese people in this area.
Real Japanese restaurant run by Japanese, the grilled fish is wonderful.
Tried this sushi restaurant based on a recommendation... it was great! Fresh and tasty. The Dynamite roll ratio of imitation crab meat to other fillings was a bit off, but the real crab cali roll and tekka rolls on point. Unagi roll was extra tasty. Prawn tempura very good, seemed not very greasy. Friendly service. My daughters loved it. Will return if Im in Coquitlam!
Saiko no!
Got take out, nothing special. The rolls werent bad; but there are definitely much better options within the area.
The food is always late and unfriendly
Weve been coming here ever since we moved to Coquitlam. Very good authentic Japanese food and quaint environment. Staff are always super friendly.
If youre looking for good quality for the price this is it. Ive tried many sushi spots in Coquitlam and we come here often. Bento boxes are massive and the fish quality I like for the price. Definitely recommend it.
My favourite sushi.
What a gem of a restaurant! Discovered this place by chance about a year ago and I try to go there whenever I m out that way. One of the most authentically Japanese restaurants in the Lower Mainland. Good value, great variety of unusual items with excellent flavours.
Amazing, authentic Japanese restaurant!
Excellent service, fair prices, great menu and delicious food
Great prices and delicious sushi :) our go-to local spot
Great quality of food, prices very reasonable. Quite busy. Bravo I enjoyed coming here. Will definitely be back
Great hidden gem, staff are always coming to visit your table filling up tea / water and the food was really good and not over priced like most places
Good variety of Japanese dishes, not just sushi, and all done to a decent standard. Their futomaki roll is one our faves as they make the traditional version.
I do not recommend Matoi sushi. The rice was bland. The California rolls were bone dry. Yam tempura was not fully cooked. Really small portions. I asked for enough soy sauce for a family of 4, only 1 small container in the order.
Super Super Clean and amazing food . Try to taste, you wont be disappointed.
Matoi is one of my favorite sushi places in town. Their small fried shrimps are so good, curry tonkatsu and grilled fish dishes are all delicious as well. Great service every time I dined in. 4 stars because one time they missed my main dish for take out dinner (grilled salmon belly) and when my husband drove back all they way back there from home and came back, fish was all cold and didnt taste good. He had went back for the dish since we had already paid for it and I was starving so didnt want to cancel the order.
A decent Korean owned Japanese restaurant. Service is pretty good. Presentation is nice. Food is slightly above average for Korean owned Japanese restaurants. I hope they can use paper bags for take-outs.
No acknowledgement after reviewing the menu, waited 7 minutes.. A staff member was more concerned about the music and aligning chairs. Left in shock. Poor selection of rolls as well.
Great food, excellent service. Good value for money
We always love sushi here, more authentic than others in the area
Excellent food, drink and service. Yummmm!
Nice and cozy place with fabulous sushi and authentic Japanese cuisine. Their Sake selection is great as well. Staff are polite, tidy and fast. What more do you want!
Fantastic authentic Japanese restaurant one of the best ib the area.
One of my favourites especially since Osamu closed Price is good and has a menu that is close to Japanese food that I have tasted here in the Tri Cities
Uber was doing a promo of 30%off so we decided to try Matoi Sushi. I was excited as the place had great reviews and the pictures looked delicious. That being said, I havent been this disappointed in a very long time. The quality and quantity were definately lacking. a good test of sushi restaurants is their ability to make sunomono salad. It was small and flavourless like the other dishes. The teriyaki beef which is a dollar more was dry and watery. The tempura was super oily and soggy and the insides were slightly undercooked. I know it was not listed but I wouldve liked the dinner boxes to include miso soup and California rolls in the sushi box option. I dont know if it was a bad day for the chef but unfortunately I dont think I can bring myself to go back to give them another chance. Wasnt worth it, even with the discounted $28. Very bad first impression. I would not recommend for takeout. Maybe eating in wouldve been a better experience.
High quality Japanese food with a great menu and selection to choose from. I never get tired of this place. Always love doing the take-out here. So consistently good and the staff is always very kind. My absolute favorite is their Nigiri and Sushi combos. I miss sitting at the bar here. Definitely one of the hidden gems in Coquitlam. What more can I say, its Japanese Sushi served with Japanese level of service and care. Highly recommended! ^^
Pick up party tray c and ebi sunomono. Enjoy very much. Good value.
Always good, our go to sushi in Coquitlam
The best sushi in the town! Me and my bf always order once a week here. Premium ingredients and great taste
Excelent food. Friendly people.
Stopped by for lunch. Real Japanese sushi restaurant and can find traditional Japanese dishes on the menu. Taste amazing.
slow, sloooow, slooooooooooow!!!! everytime have to wait long long time for my orders!!! no excuses just hire more people, doesnt make sense to wait an hour when you say your order will be ready in 10 minutes!!!
I wish there was a zero star review. We ordered takeout and the lady on the phone told me the food would be ready in 45 mins. I arrive at the restaurant on time, and there were five angry customers in front of me. I have been waiting for more than an hour and half outside the business with no ETA on when my food will be ready. Absolutely terrible time management and even worse communication. I have never seen a business run like this. Its a scorching hot day and people are waiting in their cars forced to leave the car on because its too hot outside. Deplorable management and customer service. Will never visit again!
Good quality and friendly services.
I tried multiple Japanese restaurant but this place is the best in my opinion
Ordered a chicken katsu curry on Skip and the curry has gone bed. The curry has a sour taste which shouldn t be. Bad food safety measurements.
Love the food here, and service is always fantastic. But Matoi really needs to fix their online ordering system. Most of the pandemic it wasnt setup, and now when we order the clock is wrong. I ordered today at 3:50pm and asked for it to be ready at 5:30pm. Arrive and get told the receipt said 6:30pm, but they would prep it immediately. Thought I made a mistake, but looked at the receipt on the bag and it said ordered at 4:50pm for pick up at 6:30pm... So their online ordering system is an hour off!
Service is so so but the Sushi and hot pot are tasty.
Rubbish restaurant, you have to wait for more than an hour to order a meal, the taste is mediocre
Really confusing to place order staff wasnt that friendly and the food wasnt anything special
Bento was good, Tuna and Salmon Sashimi was bad, Cod hotpot was also very bad.
Love this local Japanese restaurant! Vegetarian lunch/dinner box is great for vegetarians. Never let me down!
Good food and great service
This is our favourite Japanese restaurant. We eat here at least 3-4 times a month.
Good foods and good service!
It was pretty good
Matoi Sushi is Japanese-run and has many traditional dishes, like tenzaru soba (buckwheat noodles with a side of tenpura), that are less common at other sushi restaurants, as well as sushi, sashimi and chicken teriyaki plates for kids or the less adventurous. The individual booth rooms (ours fit 7 family members) make it perfect for dining out during covid. The ambience is good, the staff are friendly, and they have cute blue and white dishes. Matoi is right next to the Whitespot near Coquitlam Chapters. Too busy eating to take pictures!!
The sashimi is so fresh it melts in your mouth! Everything is delicious!
Authentic javanese food. Top quality sashimi, grilled foods.
I can hear so much cursing, I cant go there with the kids.
This is an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant with good taste and average price. Due to the lifting of the ban, there were many people entering the restaurant, especially when dining at the counter. There was no way to keep a distance of two meters, so I took out.
Unique fish compared to other sushi restaurants. Staff kind, courteous and attentive. Would recommend 100%
