Wanted to place a take out order over the phone. They asked me to wait. Waited for 5 minutes and hung up because they completely forgot about the call. Called a few minutes after and the line was still busy

First time trying a sushi place in Coquitlam, service was good, food presentation was great, menu has lots to choose from. Great sake options to choose from compared to the other sushi places Ive been. So far my favorite place. The atmosphere is clean.

Rating should be 4.7 because its plum and you sake are very special selection and tasty. Food is above average. Ideal for dinner and drink. Vegetarian options: Menu has veggie option. Great.

The best oshi rolls in Coquitlam in my opinion! Highly recommend Shio if you love oshi and seared nigiri. Get the salmon oshi combo to try a few different flavours and combinations.

Nice atmosphere, service was good, however the portions were smaller than expected for the price.

Food has good quality, but their policy for to-go orders is unusual. They make you wait outside, which is something Ive never seen before. Its quite inconvenient.

I ordered a Tonkatsu and 7 or 8 pieces of Nigiri sushi & Beef udon combo( including 3 pieces of tempura). Two pieces of Tonkatsu was thick and the dipping sauce was good. Then I was surprised by nigiri sushi. Especially a squid nigiri sushi was already seasoned with yuzu soy sauce( dont need dipping soy sauce), I felt like I was eating sushi in Japan. An eel nigiri sushi was grilled over a burner, giving it a fragrant flavor that was just my style. As for nigiri sushi, its the best Ive ever had at any restaurant. I dont like noisy restaurants, and Im not sure if it was a design issue, but the conversations were so loud that it was hard to hear my daughter sitting across from me.

I usually get a warm welcome from every Japanese restaurants I visited. I felt some judgement here from the servers and cooks. They werent friendly and welcoming. I went to this restaurant with my two young nieces. My nieces noticed the unfriendly atmosphere as well. It was our first visit in this restaurant. We thought we should give it a try based on its 4.4 Google review. The food was ok. Honestly, we didnt really like the calamari. It was tasteless. I dont know if Ill recommend this restaurant to my friends and family.

2024 review: diagnosed as celiac recently, communicated that I would like the sashimi to be GF, server told chefs to have no soy sauce or pickled foods in the sashimi. The sashimi ended up being served with soy sauce and pickled veggies, ultimately defeating my directions of keeping it as GF as possible. Xcontamination is no doubt a concern here. I would not come here at all any more. TLDR: New restaurant, everything looks clean, the ambiance is great and the plates look amazing. Everything is fresh, from the sashimi, to the rice and to the oil used to fry the tempura. The prices are a little higher, but IMO, its worth it for some good quality sushi just around the corner if you live in one of the buildings near by. With that aside, the food was fresh, clean tasting and constructed well. Im no sushi master, but when we lived out in Vancouver, we use to go to applause sushi and mega sushi in richmond. Ever since we moved out of Van, we couldnt really find proper replacements for that sushi out here even though there were a ton of sushi joints.... but so far, through my one and only experience, this has really hit the spot. Like I said, everything is fresh, from the sashimi, to the rice and to the oil used to fry the tempura. The rice tasted great, everything came on time one after the other. Granted, when we went, there werent very many people, if anything 2 other tables. I would like to try this place when it is busier, because if it keeps up with this level of quality, Ill be sure to come back again and again.

Really good sushi! The oshi is a bit too fragile though, very hard to pick up with chop sticks without destroying them.

Absolutely disappointed!!! Been a loyal customer since this restaurant opened. This time was joining my mother for dinner with my family. She showed up at 5 pm. I showed up exactly 5 minutes later (i know i checked). When i walked in there were only two couples in the restaurant. The rest of the tables were empty. During the period my mother waited she was incessantly harassed by the server asking when the rest of the party was showing up. We ended up leaving because my mother was frazzled by the whole incident. Shes almost 80 years old and has to be harassed. When I complained to the staff they said it was their policy. This is absolutely wrong since the restaurant was empty. If the tables were full and there was a lineup I would understand. This is whats wrong with society today where we have no respect for our elders. Very disappointing. Hopefully they treat their own mothers better.

This place is fantastic and I hope they never change, it doesnt look like they will given theyve been around a while. The food exceeded my high expectations and it was the best meal Ive had in recent history. Im excited to go back!

My son worked in the kitchen here. Really fresh and good ingredients, sanitary conditions...etc. It is kept clean and flawless. I often said that I felt like I had seen a family that is rare in todays world, where all the staff are so special and close-knit that you can believe they are family.^^ Although I am retiring because I have plans to move, I will never forget Sios City and these are people I will remember for a long time. I hope you prosper even more.^^

Update: I have been to this place many times but this time on my bday with a couple friends were treated so badly by the waitress. She was blatantly rude and disrespectful during her service. Giving attitude and at the end rudely asking us to leave with the excuse of the joint getting closed although other people were still sitting and having their food. It was my friends first time to this place and they were also offended by the waitress attitude.

Sushi especially oshi platter is amazing, if you ve sworn you found the best Aburi sushi already then come try this and itll blow you away. Their egg bomb appetizer was perfect and unctuous not greasy at all. Taco platter - since you expect tacos to have more acid it felt almost crude to call it a taco when it was just their beef mixed with some slaw, needed way more pickled veggies to make sense, customers aren t impressed if it feels gimmicky. Grilled avocado seemed pointless. should change up their deal platters to reflect more purposeful tasty fusion dishes if that s the selling point. That was the only low though because the rest of their food was amazing. Noodles great. The care of the craft shows honestly and they should stick to what they re good at best. some of the fusion dishes need more oomph in order to pop. Service- watching most customers get excellent service and special thank you from chefs as they exit is cute but they were inconsistent with some customers. Feel of place is authentic have yet to try it for take out will see if it tastes just as good!

Taste, atmosphere, service overall, good, a bit pricey, but I would go again

Conveniently located resturant with some delightful eats. The resturant was fairly busy when I walked in. I ordered Crispy Salmon and Cold Soba from the seasonal menu. All dishes arrived promptly and the service is good. The crispy salmon had excellent combination of textures and flavours, a must-order. However, ordering cold soba on a wet, rainy day was a mistake on my part. Nevertheless, I appreciate the rich flavour and especially the addition of panko suspended in the broth. The noodle bowl was topped to the brim, therefore caution is needed to prevent spilling. The takoyaki and sashimi accompanying it are good but forgettable. I was still hungry after the 2 plates, and thus ordered the Garlic Butter Ika. The squid is very fresh and quite buttery. However, the portions are small, which is the general case for everything in this resturant. I walked out feeling full but became hungry again not long afterwards. Overall still a solid resturant and a good place to check out. Parking: Plenty of parking at Coquitlam Center, which is a very short walk away.

Went here based on 4.4 google rating. Had a party of six, first three members arrived but were told they cannot sit until all in the party were present. Wait outside you scum! I will say the food came out very quick after we ordered, but the sushi was poorly rolled and portions were small. After 40 minutes we were finished, having a nice chat with my family, the food runner comes over and kicks us out we have people waiting . So many other good restaurants in the area, we won t be coming back here. Unfortunately this restaurant has chosen efficiency over customer service and ambiance. If you want mid sushi with authoritarian-north Korea vibes, this is your place!

Came here with some friends and ordered a variety of dishes. The fish in the salmon don we ordered tasted very fresh and the salmon meat was very thick and well worth it for the portion received. The oshi sushi here was also very good, I would say it was comparable, maybe even better than Green Leaf (as I think it was less greasy) and I really enjoyed the tempura flakes on the fatty tuna oshi. The calamari was really crunchy and good. The chicken karaage was also very crunchy but a bit dry in my opinion, however the mayonnaise they gave us as sauce helped alleviate that. Overall I had a very taste meal at this place! :)

Everything was really good! Authentic and great flavors. Sushi was fresh. I really LOVED the taste and presentation of the food. Service was fast. Food arrived about 10 mins after ordering. We were a party of 2 that arrived at 5pm on a Saturday and we were seated right away. About half the tables were occupied. When we left just before 630, the tables were full but some groups leaving. Since service is fast, the turn around is fast. All the negative reviews about the wait time and wait situation are just throwing tantrums. There are tons of stores in the area to pop into while you wait. And they very clearly have a sign saying they only seat full parties.

They knew about this place for a long time, but somehow it was not possible to visit. Today I visited this wonderful restaurant with my wife and daughter. The impressions are very positive, the dishes are very tasty and prepared from the freshest ingredients. This is not the first restaurant we visited, but we have never found tastier dishes anywhere. In our ranking it is now in first place. Parking: There are no problems with parking; you can leave your car two steps from the restaurant, in the parking lot of the shopping center.

Came here to get some sushi, but was met with disappointment. I recommended this place to my friend and we came here today. Very, very, bad service. My friend and her family got here first, and the staff didn t even allow them to wait for us at a table even though there were many tables that are empty. My friend told me that the staff told her very rudely that if everyone in our group wasn t present, she had to wait outside (not even inside!). Also, was very impatient with taking our orders and kept interrupting us. When she brought us water, she pretty much slammed a tea pot and some cups on top of a menu, and left. Another thing was the slowness of making the food. Me and my friend were almost done eating our food but they still hadn t brought us our children s food. Had to wait almost 40 minutes. Will not be coming back.

The attitude of the waitress made my whole day upset. I brought my two little kids there and was asked to wait outside for 20 min. The weather was freezing at night and I asked if I can keep the kids inside as they have a lot of space at the inside corner near the entrance and we would not hinder anyone or anything. They placed some menus on the entrance bar and looked like there was a standing place to let people view the menu. However the waitress did not show any sympathy and let us go outside in a very rude manner. I felt so bad and brought the kids out and found another place to eat. Would never come again.

Lined up for dinner one winter night at near 0 degree. But the staff did not allow us with 2 seniors and 2 little kids waiting inside the restaurant. Also they didn t allow us wait somewhere else but only can stand outside their door for the entire time because they don t usually call people on wait list . Only call names at their door. I cannot believe such a rude restaurant can be rated at 4.4 on google. Why does the restaurant even does not want to give people willing to try their food a call to let them know their table is ready?? Also all sushi and rolls are pre-made as Oshi were ready less than 1 minute.

Delicious sushi combos! Their aburi sushi and karage was really good. Udon was honestly not great, broth is too sweet and noodles are way overcooked. Their donkatsu is decent, very korean style.

TOP-NOTCH SERVICE. We came at a very busy evening on Friday. Due to an error, part of our order was missed. The server gave us the option to either forgo the order or wait 3 min for it. When we received the bill, the server gave us 25% off for that order, which we were not expecting! We werent even disappointed about the missing order. Thank you so much! We will be returning to Shio Japanese Kitchen.

The first place in the whole great Vancouver area that didnt have any gluten free options. Simple answer: we dont have anything gluten free. We left the restaurant. Just for the record: food on the menu looks good, the place looks always busy, but my negative experience makes me upset. PS. I switched to another sushi restaurant where I got a bunch of gluten free options.

First time being asked to wait outside for a take-out order.. (in raining weather at a non-crowded time!) The place is clean, the food is great. Honestly I would even call it the best sushi in Coquitlam. However, I was asked to wait outside for my take-out order. It was drizzling outside, and 1/3 of their tables were barely full. (I went there at 11:30, when they open, so it wasn t crowded at all) I was refused to stay inside a couple times.. but after a conversation they allowed me to wait indoors. After I sat down, the waiter gave me tea and asked me to understand them because when they are busy, waiting inside isn t possible. I do understand that if the place is crowded it would be hard for take-out customers to sit at a table and wait.. But the experience was absurd because they wanted me to wait outside , in a non-crowded situation. I saw the waiter discussing with the manager(or owner) so I presume it is their policy. After all, I enjoyed the food so perhaps I will order 10-20 minutes in advance for a pick-up. But the service experience? Ridiculous..

We found Shio online while looking for an impromptu, Friday night date location. It had great reviews so we decided to try it out. There was a bit of a line around 7pm. We waited for about 15 minutes. The menu had a ton of fantastic options and great meal sets. We decided to order and share the Egg Bomb, Spicy Mayo Prawn, Beef Kimichi Yakiudon and Simple Oshi Platter. The food was great and full of flavor. Our only complaint was that the oshi felt apart easily compared to other restaurants, but it still tasted great. The service was okay but the servers didnt seem to have assigned tables and were all over the place. At one point three different people brought the food, water and plates, but then we had to ask twice and wait 15-20 minutes for the bill. Overall we enjoyed Shio and well likely be back. If the service was more organized Id have given a 5 star, but otherwise I highly recommend! Parking: Near the mall and SkyTrain. Tons of street parking or mall parking if you dont mind a very short walk.

A big shout out for Shio. After first time trying their deluxe combo and oshi combo, we immediately fell in love with their delicious fresh sushi. Very authentic and sashimi are very fresh. Whats more is the price arent as pricy compared with other sushi restaurant if you order their deluxe combo. The only downside is the take out soba beef noodle comes with the soup, unlike other restaurants separating the soup and noodle. When brought it home, the noodle tasted a bit soggy, but doesnt effect the taste too much and very flavorble. I like the light noodle soup, not greasy like ramen soup base. Highly recommended to order their beef soba noodle when going for dine in. Oshi sushi are another highly recommended dish. Love the combinations with the sauce. The only dish that I will be picky on is the tempura which I think it tasted too greasy. The taste of oil was too heavy when biting into the crispy batter. Overall food is amazing. We ordered take out, so we will probably go again to try their dine experience next time.

A great gem in Coquitlam for a new type of sushi. You can get your traditional rolls and tempura, but you can also try some other inspired items like the Tacos, Churros and other great bites. We have been a few times and everything is delicious.

Kid-friendliness: with my three year old son It was nice to eat. The wait was long because it was dinner time, but other than having to wait outside and being a bit cold, the food and draft beer were very delicious and the staff were friendly.

Incredible food at a good price!

Despite confirming a 10min time window of what I had requested, the restaurant made my order 1 hour earlier. They did not notify me before the changed the time. Weirdly, the order was completed between lunch and dinner when they are closed. I had pork katsu in my order, so by the time I picked it up it was soggy- I also found it a bit dry and overcooked. The Salmon oshi was alright, but it did not have the texture one would expect if it was eaten fresh. The scallop roll was the only thing that was decent. Disappointing, though it might have been better if they stuck to the scheduled time and the food was fresh.

update as of today---Still the best sushi in the area. Negitoro- perfect ratio and no mushy taste of toro. Spice tuna roll - this is SPICY, and it has smoky taste as well. BC roll- Suffitient amount of salmon skin and its not fishy. Its simple and has good salmon flavor. I trust the basic rice and other ingredients this restaurant uses are top quality. Please dont change anything :) This is the only take out sushi place in the area including Lougheed area I can have a happy late night dinner,Thank you! ----------------------------------------------------- Authentic Japanese styled rolls and sushi. Quite impressed. You cant beat their combos for the value as well. Sushi rice had no old, unpleasant fishy smell. Tempura always came fresh and crispy. I am looking forward to doing dine-in here with Sake, one day. - updated, I have tried their sushi combo today, May 17th. Honestly, I did not expect much from the sushi in the combo(value is less than $20), but It was surprisingly good, too. Toro was included as well. Much thanks to the chef and team. This is definitely a 10/10 Japanese restaurant. They serve authentic foods and the staff are very kind and always with smiles. The ginger-flavored shredded carrots on the side are very special, but perfectly matched with the beef don s strong flavor. I ll definitely come back for another meal.

Dining here was therapeutic, the whole dinner was such a relaxing experience. In terms of decor, it was all quite interesting with the different light fixtures though somehow still very tasteful. The music was very smooth, the interior overall felt quite classy. Seating was good, not too crowded, well spaced and comfortable. Honestly its the perfect ambience for a date. The food was wonderful--my friend and I ate every last bit of our dinner combos, except the avocado peel, wasabi, and ginger. Staff was so nice, very polite, very friendly, I always had tea in my cup. To be honest I thought the avacado would be the least exciting part of the dinner, but everything stood out in its own way--the avocado was savoury and sweet, absolutely delightful. I dont know what the pink blend for the deep fried salmon was made of but it complimented the salmon so nicely. I always have soy sauce with my sushi--nigiri, maki, sashimi--but for the salmon oshi it was good on its own. The tuna salad was amazing and the greens were so refreshing for my palate. I saved half a little cherry tomato for last and it was bliss after my last bite of salmon.

It was very busy. The food was delicious the waitress and the bus boy were doing their very best to keep up with things. Id recommend another person for the floor. But the two of them on the floor did a wonderful job and kept a smile.

Cute place that I always find myself craving and going back to. I like their oshi and fried specialties in particular. They have many types of oshi sushi which range from sweet to spicy and always have a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The combos are probably their best deal, offering a large variety of items.

Best sushi in Coquitlam! Have eaten here many times. Love their aburi sushi, sashimi and lunch board options. Egg bomb and avocado appetizers are fantastic. Service is always courteous and prompt.

I ve been coming to Shio for a few years now. The sushi is the best I ve had from anywhere Ive tried across both Canada and US. I ve taken people here who don t eat raw fish, and after trying it here, they now love it. I ve even recommended it to people who told me they want to visit Vancouver but live elsewhere. This place is a gem, and I would 11/10 recommend that you come here and try it out as, more than likely it will become your go-to spot.

The presentation of the dishes is one of the best I have seen. I was quite surprised that what came to the table looked exactly like what it looks like on the menu. Not only does the food look awesome, the taste is fantastic too. I would recommend this place to anyone and would be back when I have a chance to do so too.

Been here many times with my family of 3 and we enjoy it every time! Shio Japanese Kitchen is just a short walk from nearby Coquitlam Centre and light years better than eating in a food court. Highly recommend getting one of their fried appetizers to start, the chicken karaage, takoyaki, and crispy salmon are all good choices! You can also never go wrong with a plate full of both eye and mouth-watering oshi. Their chefs plate each and every dish with aesthetics and taste in mind. Their food is also reasonably priced for the portion sizes compared to other restaurants in the area. Shios staff are patient, quick, and accommodating, and it makes coming here worthwhile. Would recommend.

So glad to have found this place last night. It reminds me of a sushi place from my hometown. The amount of sushi rice on the rolls are fantastic! Will most definitely be trying again and bringing the family.

This is my new favourite sushi place. Ive been coming here on and off for a few years but have been really enjoying it more lately. I love their menu - it is on the smaller side but has everything I love. Sometimes you want to have a little bit of everything and this place does it perfectly with their dishes. I always leave happy and full!

Food is really good, portions are a bit small, I try it out once in a while to see if the service has gotten better but the waitresses (the male waiters are ok) have been rude and condescending legit EVERY time Ive been here since they opened: both dine in and take out

Our fave sushi in Coquitlam - been coming regularly for over 4 years. Super fresh, nice atmosphere, well priced for the quality, consistent as well. Amazing flavours as well for the non-sushi options (katsu, spicy mayo prawns, & salad are also very nice). Staff are and generally very good but they do get busy. Great spot for lunch and dinner. Takeout can take a while at busy times.

Not authentic Japanese restaurant. Udon platter and aburi. Some aburi has shichimi which wasn t a fan of but otherwise was good. Udon is a little over cooked! And the karage is done a little differently here but tastes good:) Servers were nice and always made sure our water was full. Food

I love this place. Their nigiri is very fresh and ingredients are top notch. I usually get the combo to get different types of sushi/food. Their tempura is okay but it s their sashimi and nigiri I recommend!

Food was good. Service was a bit slow. Asking for the bill. Was given the bill and the waiter said he was going to bring the machine. Never came back . After 15 mins a female came to our table with the card.machine. The atmosphere was more local and welcoming when menus were placed on walls. With the menu books now it feels like average.

Delicious food, prompt and friendly service. Decor inside is beautiful and clean washrooms. The takoyaki for appetizer was crispy, all the rolls were fresh, the spicy salmon sashimi could use more spice but it was a large portion. The churros were soft and crispy without being too sweet, would be nice with some ice cream. Was surprised to see them on the menu but it was a nice change for dessert. Cant wait to come back!

The service was excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the variety of combo options. Plus, the prices were quite reasonable, making it a great value for the quality of food and service.

Ordered dinner from Uber Eat with their special BOGO promotion. Uber BOGO deals can be a hit or miss, mostly misses. Shio was definitely a hidden gem. We ordered Crispy salmon tempura, spicy salmon oshi, aburi creamy mayo, dynamite roll, and chicken udon. Everything taste amazing.

What a GREAT place for Japanese food! The food was absolutely delicious, nicely cooked, well presented and very good portions. I loved the atmosphere and I m wondering why I haven t been there earlier. I m definitely going back to try more items from the menu. Thank you for the experience

The ultimate betrayal.... Tempura with no traditional tempura dip Their portions have definitely shrunk since inflation. Food overall is very good. Definitely try the oshi at least once. You might get hooked on it.

Its been a couple years since Ive been here and the service and quality if not the same is better than I remember it. Great job and kudos to all those who work there with this crazy Monday night rush.

This place is on the office lunch hour rotation list. Placed high up there. I recently had the tonkatsu and for $15 (pre tax and tip) you get a bowl of rice, good amount of coleslaw with vinaigrette and 2 big tender juicy pieces of panko breaded pork. I couldnt finish it all myself. The food came within 20 mins. My coworker loves their rolls and they always look fresh and I can smell the nicely seasoned rice on his rolls from across the table. Service is attentive most times but also you have to get your hands waving to get their attention because they are so busy with customers and take out orders.
