Bottom grade Thai cuisine and the worst I ve ever eaten anywhere! Skimpy portions, poor quality and non authentic tasting food, bad / rude service. I ll never return. Hopefully Courtney / Comox will eventually get a Thai restaurant of high standards and quality.

Would you order seafood from a place that spelled their name wrong? Well, I did First thing I noticed walking in was a sign spelled kinarree. Ordered a mixed seafood dish and it was horrible! Muscles tasted like some kind of weird plastic and the squid rings were about as chewy as dentine. Please dont eat this food 2 stars because the guy was nice

The tofu and chili sauce was good! Service was good, greeted right away, with friendly service.

The service was great, we were seated quickly. The portions were good and the price was really decent. I had the pad thai and it was fantastic. Its a small operation so dont expect fast food but expect good homemade thai!

Very slow kitchen. Everytime I call in to order takeout (if the phone actually gets answered) I am told 1hour 45mins+ before pickup. Restaurant is rarely full. A few times I have actually been patient enough to wait that long and was kind of dissapointed at the small quantity of food. The pad Thai was alright, but definitely a surprisingly small portion. Another time I went to order Thai ice tea to go and they said they don t have to go cups and also won t fill your personal cup.

Delicious food!! Got the five flavoured chicken on recommendation from a review I read.. boyfriend got a beef dish it was so flavourful. Went on a slow Monday at 7pm :) to our surprise and delight everything was served to share.

Lovely family run restaurant. Great food and great portions.

The food was very good. Portion size is only average, but the prices are very affordable so overall value is good. Service was slow, but everyone is short staffed in these times. Recommend the Tom Yum (sweet and sour) soup. Vegetarian options: Almost every dish on the menu is available with tofu.

Best Thai spot in town

The food portions arent huge but the price is low so order an extra dish if youre starving. Food was fresh and delicious.

Delicious and quick. Friendly and informative waiter. Somehow the cook knew what I wanted! Blackened prawn veges and the chefs noodles. The chicken satay is so good and try the Change beer, very very good on a hot day.

We wanted to love it but the food was seriously disappointing. The peanut sauce was very watery and didnt taste like peanut. The whole dish was like day old Chinese food..greasy, limp vegetables and canned mushrooms. The service was good but we will never go back. Yuck.

My negative review has nothing to do with the food or the service as I got neither. I came into town on a bicycle and wanted to eat at this place because they were supposed to be open at 11:30 a.m. as it said on their web page. Upon arrival I found a handwritten note on the front door stating they were not open until 5:00 p.m. It doesnt take 5 minutes to get on your web page and change the hours or put a notice up saying you have an emergency which will help people decide if they want to come over to your restaurant. I rode 15 km out of my way from my campsite to eat at a place which was not open and did not even have the courtesy of posting it. It appears the large number of negative comments are justified for this restaurant.

Everything was great. Food was excellent. Keep in mind they are short staffed at the moment so do be patient and kind :)

Not the friendliest staff, thats for sure. I was waiting in line to order and I overheard the manager belittling a staff member in front of guests, it was appalling. (My first impression) As a recent visit me and a friend went at 5pm for dine in. Eventually we were seated and the sunlight was blaring on his eyes as we were sitting in the booth. He started to move the curtains on the windows where we were sitting to block the light from his eyes, and immediately the manager/owner of the establishment got up and told us to stop moving them. As we explained why we were doing it, he got very defensive and angry at us. Does customer comfort not matter to you? Also the takeout orders come much smaller than dine in, which is disappointing. Great food but the service is awful, staff is rude and seemed very unhappy. Please treat your employees better. Shame..

Ive honestly never left a review before. I was so dissapointed by this meal. Portions were way too small, and the food was really not on par with Thai food Ive had other places. I wont ever go back. Sorry to say that.

Food taste wise was ok, not something I would rush back for. I do agree with a lot of the comments about how the portions are very small.

We had not been to Kinaree since pre-COVID. It was great to go back. I love the food here... I always go for yellow or green curries. They didnt let me down. The owner has that dry sense of humor like British humor and I always enjoy it, so if he makes a crack dont take it personally, just enjoy it. My son says their pad Thai is not totally authentic, but he enjoys their way of making it. Nice environment too. Such good food.

Very slow service. And they need to wear hair nets in the kitchen. Found hairs in my food a few times. The portions are small and the food is not as good as other Thai restaurants on the island.

Calamari was clearly bought at Costco. Do not order! Used to be a good place. What a shame.

Wonderfully delicious and delightful. I came on a date with my wife. I must have driven past this place many times before but it is my first time stopping in. I have to say I loved the decor, really beautiful and clean. Also, the service was super friendly. The portions were a bit smaller than I would have liked but each dish was a real treat. I am looking forward to coming back on another date night.

Very very small takeout portions, really disappointed. My vegetable salad rolls were tiny and ripped and contained very little vegetable, just a few strands of carrot with one lettuce leaf - I could have made a better one at home myself. Maybe add in more veggies, daikon, tofu, etc? Veg Pad Thai was very small and almost cold when I got it (I was told to come after 45 mins). I paid double what I think this was worth.

They advertised rice as coconut rice , but was served just plain steamed rice. Of course, i knew the difference, but simply forced myself to enjoy the food and not ruin my appetite.

Came just shy of an hour before lunch time closing. If you come make sure you come early because the staff member was quite rude and dismissive and refused to serve us and we had to leave. Will not be returning but will be returning to Saigon noodle house instead.

Have enjoyed Thai all over BC so tried here a couple times to give it a chance, but both times the take-out portions barely covered the bottom of the tin. I think $34 for two items is too much in comparison. Spicing levels.... Mild is none to very little heat, and medium seemed too spicy. Friendly staff.

Best Thai food on the Island and the service is amazing. We have never had a bad meal there. We have been going to Kinaree for over 10 years and the food is always amazing and consistent. Its so nice during the pandemic when you call for take out the owner knows your name and your favorites. Its our go to restaurant in the Comox Valley.

I ordered for pick up and wait time was ~45 min. Well worth it. Staff was friendly, professional and prompt. Food was so great, and prices are not bad at all. My photography skill does no justice but the pad thai and green curry are a must-try. Ill definitely be back!!

Very tasty Thai food but portions are very skimpy. Hardly any meat or veggies for the price you pay. Long waits for take out.

Portion sizes are incredibly small compared to other Thai restaurants weve had. Costly takeout to still be hungry unfortunately

I love this Thai restaurant! We consistently have excellent quality food that even my picky 6-year old loves. We are consistently impressed with the curries, I have to order 2 pad thais every time and there are rarely leftovers! Highly recommend!

The food was Delicious. I agree with other reviews, portions are a bit smaller but good for one person. Between the two of us we ordered one dish each and a shareable soup. The service is a bit slow but the food more than made up for it.

Unbelievably small portion .thought they made a mistake but reading the reviews, they didn t. Basically if you want to eat properly, order 2x or 3x you need. However, I m never going back there. Cheers!

Had a really good dinner here. Weve spent a lot of time in Thailand and this was much more authentic than we expected. Chicken satay, red curry and house noodles were great. Nice service and very reasonable prices. Main criticism is that we asked for hot and the food was delicious, but not even moderately spicy.

Id love to give more stars. The food is good but pricy for the size like everyone agrees. Sometimes the wait is extremely long for take out compared to every other Thai restaurant on the island. Expect to wait close to an hour for take out :(

Ordered takeout food for Valentines Day an hour and a half in advance; when I arrived at the designated pickup time the owner was completely oblivious to my order, and tried to tell me I hadnt ordered, instead of offering alternative options, or looking to seek a resolution. Lack of customer service skills, and very poor experience overall on a important day. This place will get you in the bad book with your date. Will not return.

We called to order a takeway yesterday evening and encountered a very rude man on the phone. We put this down to it being Saturday and and potentially they are busy although thing was early evening around 5. We collected our food around 6 paid $107. The meal that was meant to feed 4 adults with little bits for 2 small kids to pick at (ages 2 and 5). We unpack go find that our red curry was infact green and that all of the take out containers where half full or less. It would have been rough enoug for 3 but definitely not 4. We cooked extra rice ourselves. Food was tasty but very spicy for what was meant to be a mild spice selection. Wouldnt go back

Some of the best Thai food there is in Canada. Try it and you will understand.

Due to COVID we only did take out but I went to pick it up and saw the inside of the restaurant it looks nice and cozy and hope to be able to dine in one day. Was recommended this place by a friend and holy cow was he right. Food was fantastic. We got 3 different dishes to try. Kinaree house noodle, salmon Choo Chee and black pepper beef and all 3 where amazing. Our favourite was the black pepper beef. They can make it mild medium or hot for you as well depending on your spice tolerance. We were very impressed and will be coming back for sure.

Absolutely love the food!! The atmosphere is very nice and so clean. Service was great and very quick. The flavours were so amazing. I am a bit of a foodie and gourmet cook so I am very picky. I have been to almost every restaurant in Courtenay and I have to say this is the best one by far! The chef/owner came out and talked to us which I thought was really special. I highly recommend and this is now my favourite place in town! Thank you Pattie for your wonderful food and making us feel like family! Max is a great server too! Keep smiling!

Chicken pad thai was delicious and a generous portion.

The food was delicious, well seasoned. We started with the Veggie Salad Rolls which were tasty and fresh but I was expecting more for $7.50. We had the Pad Thai with Tofu - I found the portion small and the pieces of tofu a bit too big, they ended up tasting bland. The soft noodles contrasted well with the fresh veggies and crispy egg. We also had the Banana Green Curry which was very tasty! My husband basically cleaned the bowl out, the sweet/heat combo was awesome! The way they serve the rice is very unique, bringing a large dish and just putting some onto your plate. We waited multiple minutes though from when the rice hit our plates until the rest of our dishes showed up. I was so hungry that I just started eating plain rice. No one checked on our table after we got our main dishes. I would be back, but knowing that Im paying a bit more than I want to, for weird service but tasty food!

Ordered takeout and rice was way over cooked. Added chicken to my red curry dish and was disappointed to find only three tiny pieces. My wifes dish was the same. Sadly this was not worth the $50.00 price. Not comparable to places like Baan Thai.

We were so looking forward to Thai food after not having it for quite some time. I should say that we are very familiar with Thai food at restaurants and through our Thai friends. Kinaree is, pure and simple, a rip-off. The portions are extremely small. We had four doughy skinny spring rolls for $7.50. Do not get the crab and cream cheese wontons. We got six burnt wontons with virtually no discernible filling. We were served coconut rice that no coconut taste. We thought that we had been mistakenly served plain rice but the owner/manager insisted that the rice was made with coconut milk and water. He was actually argumentative! We also had a noodle dish which he told us had vegetables. We asked for crisp noodles and we were served with about a 1 1/2 cups of super fine cellophane noodles that disintegrated into the sauce at the bottom of the plate. I think we had three pieces of broccoli, a bit of cauliflower and a couple of carrot slices. The drunken prawns were not deveined properly and once again, a very small portion. The owner is making a killing with those prices and portions. A very staple ingredient in Thai recipes is the papaya which he said could not be obtained. They have lots at Super Store. Nor could he find any tofu. We were treated like idiots.

Terrible. Ordered my beef meal to go and when I got home and opened it there were pieces of blue, green and purple shell in my beef order! I called to let the restaurant know and was told oh that s never happened before. Very disappointed, won t be ordering again.

If I could Id give this dump minus 4 stars. Ordered coconut rice and the owner came and doled it out from a bowl. Small portion. 10 minutes before the food arrived. The food itself was cold and quite revolting. The fish sauce tasted like goldfish food smells. The pad Thai was congealed and lumpy. Noodles overcooked. The ambiance of this place can only be called dystopian. It looks good at first but then you start to notice the dust, the dirty carpets and the stained linens. There is absolutely no way I would recommend this even to my worst enemy. I cant imagine how anyone could recommend this place. Either they have very low standards or I visited it on the day the chef quit to be replaced by a bunch of semi-trained paramecium. I cant say this enough: DO NOT EAT HERE! Not even with your mother-in-law...

Our two couples decided on Thai food last night and picked the Kinaree as our restaurant of choice. What a great find for us (alL having been to Thailand and are fans of Thai cuisine). The food was perfect! The Pad Thai took us back to eating in the markets of Bangkok. The owner was so friendly and took super care of us. Well worth a visit!

Excellent food, the Green Curry is fantastic. Its a bit slow (maybe 15-20mins after you order) but it tastes like it was prepared just for you so its worth it. Good price too.

Horrible place walked in asked to make a take out order not even delivery and was turned away at 5:53 pm. I will never be back. Not the type of business I am willing to support.

Excellent food and service

We have eaten here about 6-8 times or ordered in, in the last year and a half. Although the food is usually consistently good the portions have gotten smaller every visit. Last night was my final visit to this establishment. Four of us waited for over 1.5 hours for our dinner and we were plenty ignored while waiting patiently. Our food came sporadically and mostly cold except for the hot plate. $150 with one drink each and we left hungry and angry. When we asked if there would be a reduction in our bill the owner was very rude and could only tell us that it wasnt his fault that it got busy all of a sudden. You would think that being in the restaurant business you would have that covered. Very disappointed all he had to do is be polite and possibly comp a drink or a desert.

Very disappointing. We went as a group of 4. Our service was terrible. Our appitizer came out after waiting for sometime our guests never got their lettuce wraps we sat for over 1 hour for our pad Thai. Portions were small not enough for 4 people. The owner said its not his fault he did nothing for us for as far as reducing our bill. Very disappointing, we will not be back!

Very disappointed! Very surprised in the portions in our takeout containers. We ordered 2 dishes & rice. Lots of rice but dishes were only about 1/3 full. (no kidding).I have eaten here before & it was excellent & portions were standard (which is usually big). Flavourful but just not enough to satisfy. Also surprised that when one of our dishes came with a protein which we didnt order, staff member charged us anyway. Feeling sad that I wont be coming back!

Food is slightly above average, but the portion size is really small, maybe perfect for people who are on diet. I ordered chicken satay, $7.95, only 4 pieces, soup was ok, then I ordered a stir fried vegetable, it is so small, like half of what a normal restaurant would serve, and they charge over $17 for it. Not a place to go if you are hungry. Service was average too, if portion size was more, I would have given 4 stars.

Food was fabulous but we felt like we had offended when requesting more rice to finish off the rest of our meal with. Would be much nicer to have a bowl left at the table instead of being served small amounts by the server from a bowl kept in the kitchen. Dont let this stop you though possibly just me and my guy.

Ordered a meal to go. Soup was a small serving for price with only a few pieces of seafood in it, which I paid extra for. Lettuce rolls was a disappointing mixture of tiny cubes containing peppers, tofu but mostly onions in a watery tasteless broth. A quarter of iceberg lettuce still attached to its stem was tossed in. And they forgot my rice. I was so unsatisfied I had to order an additional meal at another establishment. Will not be ordering from here again. Price too high with skimpy portions. Very disappointed and felt like I wasted my money.

The food and people are wonderful, but the take out portions are SUPER small (they are same price as dine in) - I have felt this way twice now :(

First off the food was good. The problem was the portion size and the poor service from whoever answered the phone. We ordered a chicken pad Thai and and a bbq chicken dish, the guy called us back and said they couldnt do the chicken so we got a green Chicken curry instead. The guy we spoke to couldnt even tell us if a side of rice was enough for two people, he seemed unimpressed we even asked. The pad Thai split between the two of us was barely enough and the curry had almost no chicken and few vegetables. We also got a sticky rice and mango desert which wasnt bad at all ( a little skimpy for 5 bucks ) It cost 35 dollars for our meal and we were not impressed. Im hungry and there isnt even leftovers. Its a shame because the food was good but the price we paid was not worth it. The kitchen did an excellent job tho.

Last night we had dinner at this restaurant for the first time. Service was great. Our server was super friendly, knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor. We were a little bit nervous going to this restaurant as i have a peanut allergy. They were super accommodating and made sure i did not come in contact with peanuts at all. The food was delicious and the menu was quite big. Lots to choose from for sure. I will be going again :)

Miniscule portions, the spring rolls tasted funny (and were tiny), sub-par salad rolls, the panang curry was tasty but the entire $12.70 curry fit in a coffee mug, even the rice was dry and tiny. Never in life will I eat there again.

My first time here and it was fantastic. I was initially skeptical when I walked in as it was supper time and we were the only ones there. That always gets me thinking that everyone knows something I dont. We got sat down and compounding my fear was the clear plastic covers protecting the table clothes. I dont why it bothers me, I guess it smacks of cheap diner but what do I know. So with all that aside, we ordered some items from across the menu and BAM! Absolutely delicious food! The curry was so flavourful and just the right amount of heat. Pad Thai, spot on. Dont let the looks deceive you, this place will be an instant favourite! Great food, good service, will come again.

The Pineapple Fried Rice is excellent

I dont care for seafood so when we ordered spring rolls and found shrimp in them, that ruined my meal. Host excuse was they were busy but to me thats a poor excuse.

Stickered on the door to Kinaree Thai Cuisine is the word Sawatdee a Thai greeting following by the phrase, Thai It. You ll Like It , which is both adorable and also probably the catch phrase for various Southeast Asian pornography sites. I m surprised the owner stopped there with the puns. Don t let regular food Thai you down, har har! That aside, Kinaree is a fantastic jewel in the heart of a town you d not usually associate with good Thai food, most likely due to the charming owner that greeted and served us, sporting an untucked dress shirt lacking a Thai (get it, Thai/Tie <cough>, moving on). I do appreciate Thai restaurants for their flare. Call it garish, but they always seem to make it work in my opinion, from the cellophane-topped tables to the red walls and regalia acknowledging the fact that Thailand is still a kingdom. Even the utensils are from Thailand, and they each weighed around 100 grams for some reason. They looked forged from solid brass. Like any good Thai meal, I started with the prawn salad rolls, a pair with peanut sauce for $7.95, a bit more expensive for my taste. They were good, and you do get two generous rolls justifying the value, but I d prefer a smaller order at a cheaper price. This was followed by a traditional curry. Rice was spooned from a gigantic bowl, the likes of which you d see serving royalty from the 17th century (serving to royalty, I mean because the other makes no sense). Not kidding, some of these dishes look pulled from an epic feast within the walls of a medieval great hall, where cooks had to stand naked inside ovens while they turned the suckling pig, and men with weathered teeth, huge beards and draped in furs tore beef directly from the bone while jesters entertained always on guard of committing some offense that would get them demoted to unich. But this is Thai, so I had curry with rice. There were also carrots cut to resemble flowers, because I don t know, Asia. All this eventually led to dessert, which I ll dedicate at least a generous 130 words to (or would you rather one-hundred thir-thai words), because I seriously don t know if they were meant to be a joke. Five of the dessert options all involved ice cream. I ordered the deep-fried banana with ice cream while my friend ordered the deep fried ice cream with banana I m not kidding; those were the options, the same ingredients with different parts deep-fried. It makes me wonder why they didn t offer two more, with both ice cream and banana deep-fried and another where neither are. Our orders were served on identical plates with caramel and chocolate drizzle, presented with a tiny wooden shovel for a spoon. A tiny wooden shovel, I assume also from Thailand. It was odd each plate tasted different, with the deep fried ice cream edging the deep fried banana by a hair. But even as I ordered the dish, I felt someone was playing a joke. Then I remembered the Thai it sign outside and realized I should have expected it. This owner was obviously a wise-Thai . Oh god, these are getting worse. Despite the charisma of our host and server, there was a substantial delay in the delivery of food, but it didn t cross the threshold of being too long. Personally, given the size of the town of Courtenay, I was surprised they had a Thai place at all. My home town of Prince George is triple the size and it also only has one. Given that, Kinaree could have surfed its ethnic distinction into lackluster food (which my local spot has been guilty of on occasion), so I am pleasantly impressed Kinaree is refusing to settle. This is the best Thai food I have ever had. The food was hot and delicious. All the dishes had their own distinct flavour. Fabulous.

My favorite restaurant in Courtenay. The pad Thai, awesome.

Good food but surprised at the price. The soup was 10.50 and was only just a bowl - nothing substantial. Two bowls of soup and two small appetizers cost $40.00! Again - it was very good though.
