A disappointing meal. For the last 3 years we have wanted to eat here. We finally justified it for my 50th birthday. What a waste of time The atmosphere was awful. There were 3 tables including us. The music was Whitney Houston and Tina turner. The food was distinctly mediocre. The wine pairing was definitely lacking inspiration . £420 for 2 people. Its utterly ridiculous. Get a Michelin star before you change Michelin star prices. It was overall pretty poor for the money

Last night we enjoyed the full acre tasting menu at The Small Holding, what an amazing experience we had! The whole operation, from beginning to end was magnificent. We felt looked after, but still had our own space to enjoy the food. Snacks on the terrace were delicious, moving into the restaurant streamlined, drinks fantastic and service; thoughtfully and craft-fully done. Each course and mouthful was well balanced in a way we hadn t enjoyed before - modern techniques used, without losing the intrinsic flavours of the earth. This was perfectly paired with sustainable wine. You are able to enjoy both the food, and the efforts the team has gone to source it or grow it. Each staff member was passionate about The Small Holding and its ethos, and this was contagious in its enjoyment for us! It really showed in everything from the welcome, the waiting, the wine, the decor, the farm and the food. Little tidbits where we got to learn new flavours, as well as enjoying the fermented glass jars of produce that made its way onto our plate. It really was a special evening. The menu changes every month so considering a subscription to this rather than Netflix! If the price point is too high, we visited birchwood (in the same ACRE family group) and was equally wowed by our cinnamon roll pancakes!

A second visit for a special occasion to celebrate a wedding anniversary. 10 years as MR and MRS Johnson. The whole evening was amazing; the food incredible and delicious and all the staff without exception were attentive and welcoming. Would recommend to everyone. Looking forward to going again.

First of all, I would not let this put you off visiting - the food was absolutely divine- well thought through, creative and presented beautifully. We did however have some mixed feelings on the service. We had a voucher purchased from some friends and on booking were asked if we had any dietary requirements - having not looked up the restaurant in any great amount of detail assuming it was a standard menu I replied no which in hindsight was an error. When we arrived and realised it was a set menu we politely told the waitress neither of us ate seafood (which was present in two of the dishes on the set menu). We were more than happy to take any kind of vegetarian equivalent for those dishes and I apologised profusely for not mentioning it on booking. The waitress was lovely and said she was sure something could be sorted out however where we were sat I was able to see when this information was relayed to the lady who I assume was the manager and subsequently the kitchen staff. I watched as she visibly rolled her eyes and they started muttering, I instantly felt incredibly uncomfortable and unfortunately this for us tainted the otherwise lovely experience we might have had. I would therefore urge when asking for dietary requirements to assume the customer is not aware of the format, and relay that this is indeed a set menu for which swaps are not catered for, likewise please manage any opinions slightly more privately to avoid making customers uncomfortable.

What a wonderful experience we had, finding about what veg are being cultivated for the year. How things are not wasted through being preserved. A perfect place to spend your anniversary. Dietary restrictions: Happy to change the menu depending on your requirements

Went here last night for father-in-law s 60th birthday. Food was fantastic. Service you couldn t ask anything better. Head chef/owner came out with some of the courses and everything was explained extremely well. I don t like mushrooms but was willing to try everything and omg my mind was blown away. Sorry if we was bit loud but being a chef myself don t get out often especially Friday night. 100% will be back to try another tester menu. Well done Will and the team ( I hope I remembered the name correctly)

A great intimate experience, great tasting food sourced as locally as possible and a seasonal menu that changes constantly, with some exciting flavours you wont find elsewhere. Served to you by an infectiously enthusiastic team. All round great experience.

Visited The Small Holding for Mothers Day lunch, and were absolutely blown away by the food and the service. The tasting menu approach is a great treat, and some of the things these guys pull off are incredible (the pumpkin sorbet was amazing). Very informative and friendly service, and child friendly. What a lovely meal & day we had. We booked for 12 as we wanted a tour yo their farm. The gardener was so nice and kind yo answer any Qs we had. Our lunch was delicious and super filing . Service was outstanding lit details were nice. We will defo go back in summer. Thank you everyone!

We decided to treat ourselves to a midweek meal out. Our choice of venue was perfect as the new Head Chef James Chatfield was introducing his new and very exciting menu, and what a menu! We loved every course, all perfectly prepared and we just had the most amazing evening being looked after by Gabby, Front of House trust us on a grey evening Gabby brings sunshine to your table. We came away thoroughly spoiled and would highly recommend that you ensure you get a reservation soon before the word gets out because if was a truly lovely special meal. A trip to The Small Holding is an adventure, an exciting experience and a huge treat! The food is always completely delicious, beautiful to look at and almost everything comes either directly from the farm there or from as close as possible. Sustainability and zero waste is really important to them. Even the no-dig way they farm helps reduce greenhouse gas release. The best part of the experience is the staff - both front of house and the chefs who come to the table to explain all the details of the food and wines. They are so welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate. You can taste the love and hard work that goes into every dish!

The attention to detail is outstanding. Every part of the experience from the tour of the small holding, the knowledgable staff, exquisite and beautifully prepared courses to the ambience was just joyful. We even had our family name printed & on the table. Its the little touches. We were down visiting my son & fiancé over the festive period and this was an extra Christmas present. My husband doesnt eat meat so Decembers menu was perfect & why my son wanted to take us. The 2 brothers who own this restaurant are living the dream. Everything I love. Nature, living off the land, sustainability, supporting small businesses and rustic. We absolutely loved it.

This was our second visit to The Small Holding and it was just as good as we remembered. The food is exceptional- inventive, interesting and really delicious. It has the finesse of a fine dining restaurant, in a relaxed and friendly setting.. All of the staff are great - very knowledgeable and professional, but also relaxed and welcoming. Definitely well worth a visit - an ideal choice for a special occasion.

Chuckling all the way through the meal, kept surprising me, wine pairings were simply brilliant. The only other time I have had a meal this good with service this warm and personal was back in June - the last time I came to The Smallholding...

I could not rate this enough, genuinely 10/10! The price/quality ratio is on point, the food is amazing and the staff is super nice without giving you any fake smiles. Absolutely deserving of their Michelin star, and I cant wait to tell everyone about this place.

Special with a capital S. A very unique experience with some exceptional dishes with some very clever execution. I could be a happy man with the pulled venison on a cube of potato with a home made tomato sauce. We are very lucky to have such a great and innovative chef (and team) on our doorstep. Stopped by during a trip to a Kent winery. Genuinely gobsmacked, this place is fantastic. The chefs are amazing, the food is on another level, definitely deserve a Michelin star. Book a tasting menu here and you wont be disappointed!

Such a treat!! I kidnapped my hubby and brought him here for our wedding anniversary. Every serving was well-planned, thought-through and full of flavour. It isn t cheap, but we whole-heartedly recommend it if you want to have an unforgettable experience. A special thanks to the chef and cooking staff, as I personally have a lot of food allergies and intolerances and they made me feel very welcome and not different from anyone else.

British destination dining at its best, The Small Holding offers passionately prepared produce straight from the garden, mixed with low-mileage sustainably sourced produce. There is something really special about looking up from your plate and seeing the same veggies grow just beyond the patio, but that magic only lasts as long as the food enchants you and the Devlin brothers have that down to a tee. The food is memorable, with a tasting menu where each of the courses offers something new and refreshing, and you find yourself continuously wondering what the next invention will be. Distinctly modern European usually means there is no clear identity at all, but this beautiful gastronomic journey clearly takes you on a merry meander across the British and French countrysides, whole still feeling inventive and fresh. The wild garlic and potato soup/velouté/broth was inspired, the petit-fours much more than just an afterthought, meat perfectly cooked and seasoned, and even the dessert delighted me despite not having any propensity to ordering the sweet stuff. Our wine list was pricy at £60 per person, but we ll worth it for wine aficionados. Each glass felt like the grand finale of a long evening of wine tasting, and I came out adding each of them to my mental favourites list. In conclusion, The Small Holding is neither cheap nor convenient, but it is a dining experience that you will remember for far longer than the size of the bill or the travel time.

We have just come away from one of the best meals we have ever had. We booked the farm tour before our meal and were shown around by Will who was so passionate and interesting to listen to. We then sat down for the amazing 8 course tasting menu of such wonderful local produce turned into unique and tasty dishes. Service was absolutely amazing, food and wines explained for each course and attention to detail spot on! We will definitely be back for next months menu and think its worth every penny!!

An absolute gem in the heart of the Kent countryside. Sustainable food grown from their on site farm, the most delicious flavours paired with wine. Choice of 6 course or 8 course tasting menu. The staff are attentive, knowledgable and friendly, including the chefs who come out with the food from time to time. They catered for my fish allergy really well and the alternatives were divine :)

My husband and I visited today for our 7th Wedding Anniversary and were completely blown away by the experience. The food is exceptional, nothing was too much trouble and we had the most wonderful afternoon. Vegetarian options: As long as you let them know in advance they will change the meat dishes for vegetarian. Dietary restrictions: They are so flexible and accommodating to all restrictions. There were people with all kinds of allergies and intolerances and they catered for all.

Simply amazing. Perhaps better than anywhere else, they combine fine dining with an atmosphere that s actually lovely and relaxed. That s not to say that the service isn t as good as any fine dining restaurant I ve eaten in. Love the use of produce grown on site. As for the wine list always lots of new things to discover on there. Can t recommend highly enough.

A Michelin Style Quality Dinner with a fresh organic countryside concept. The Small Holding promotes their produce and dishes on fresh local ingredients to create great tasting and delicious dishes. Choosing the 5 course meal which includes a wonderful selection of well balanced and developed dishes with seasonal produce , the Mushroom dish was the showstopper , with fresh and vibrant flavours it was robust. However, the homemade brown rustic House Bread was tough and flavourless, would have liked to see more flare on the butter, maybe a garlic and herb salted butter with sourdough. It is definitely somewhere worth the visit , and a great eat in Kent.

OMG! I have always been a bit reluctant/sceptical about high/fine dining. However, this was my first experience and I was seriously, blown away. The most amazing food, quality, service, friendly meal which for us turned in to a lifetime event! Well done to ALL staff involved. We em had such a lovely, amazing time! Fantastic little farm tour with the Chef and owner (Will) before the meal (you have to be on a 12:00 lunch), staff were all trained and worked to and an exceptional standard whilst conveying the relaxed atmosphere (demonstrating their quality), the food was excellent with the amuse-bouche being my highlight. Can t comment on the wine as we didn t drink, £85pp for the full tasting menu felt like really good value for money (you get more than you pay for at that price I d argue). Will definitely return. Dietary restrictions: I have a peanut allergy and no issue at all

Incredible Food experience from start to finish. The staff were brilliant and extremely attentive which made the whole service flow. The food was thoughtful and tasty. Complex flavors delivered with top notch wines to match. Would highly recommend for any special occasion or jut if you feel like a treat.

If only I could choose more than five stars. I lived in London for 8 years and have eaten in some of its most favoured/emerging stars, and can still say this was one of my best ever meals. Everything about the restaurant is exquisite. The rustic elegance of the decor, the warmth of the staff, the unusual yet delicious and layered flavours, there is attention to and intention in every detail. I also have food intolerances that make eating a set menu challenging, but they sourced only the best alternatives to create a twin for every dish that was as stunning as the original. Thank you to the team for such a gorgeous evening, we can t wait to return Dietary restrictions: I am intolerant to gluten, dairy, potato and corn (I know!) and they accommodated everything without me missing out on anything. Truly exceptional

Well what can you say, just superb.

Will and his team are doing something very special at this little gem of a restaurant - my Husband and I experienced the Tasting Menu and it is fantastic coupled up with a fine choice of wines. The game was particularly delicious and tasty! Very deserving of their award. We are going to visit the latest addition to his family of restaurants, now 3, at The Birchwood, Flimwell Park which we are excited about next month. The Curlew, Bodium has a fantastic atmosphere and sharing plates always adds to the fun. Delicious too. Highly recommend!!

The restaurant itself feels warm and welcoming. The atmosphere was friendly and calm; not frantic or loud. The tables are well spaced so you don t feel like you re sitting on top of each other. Staff were friendly and helpful. The service was quick. There is a set menu based on the season which you have no input in, but that just meant we didn t have to faff around deciding from a menu. It consisted of 10 courses and you will be sufficiently full by the end. It s great that the food is all seasonal and locally sourced. The food itself was creative, tasted great and was well presented.

The small holding was recommended to us by locals we met at a wine tasting event. It s a little pricey but it is 100% worth it. The quality and freshness of the ingredients, the friendliness of the staff (they wrote me a happy birthday card!!) and the innovation in the food is just incredible. I am so happy we went and I d definitely go back if I had a chance.

Have never been to the establishment but have attended one of their pop up events in Tunbridge Wells a while back and the food was absolutely amazing... So therefore looking forward to popping over to their restaurant over in Cranbrook and try their main menu!

Good food, stylish setting incl. cutlery, interior design and outside area. I did feel rushed though. Neither waiters nor chefs had any time to explain the dishes.

This was a 10/10 culinary experience but without the stiffness you sometimes get from similar places. We arrived and took a few minutes to look at the vegetables growing on the on-site farm which gave us a real feel for the local and sustainable approach of the resturant. Once in the interior and the staff set the tone, warm, friendly and relax. You are encouraged to eat and drink at your own pace and enjoy the experience. On to the food it s amazing! Each course is presented by one of the chefs alongside a quick introduction to what the dish is and where it came from. I won t go into every course but hopefully the images paint a picture! On the booze I had a local craft beer on arrival which I will certainly be buying again, a glass of white with the fish and red with the meat. Perfectly recommended and complementary to the dishes.

What an experience ! If ever you want to dine out and feel you have gone to food heaven book this restaurant. Totally unique as there is no set menu but a huge number of tastings of the most exquisite tasty food combinations. Excellent restaurant based on growing ingredients to cook and serve. 11 courses of small plates just enough, good wine list. Second visit as so enjoyed the first. Confirmed consistently great food in a warm welcome atmosphere with a carefully selected wine list.

A very nice country restaurant. We stumbled across it on a long walk and were not disappointed. Sophie and the team took excellent care of us with wine recommendations and perfect service. Lovely setting on the edge of the woods but the interior decor is a little simplistic and they should do better! The food was really delicious; small courses but plenty of them and all locally sourced. Good value for money. The petit fours with coffee at the end of the meal were a nice touch. Well done team we will spread the word!

Absolutely incredible experience. They served us a 10 course tasting menu, we had no idea what it was going to be, but that was part of the fun. Each course was so delicious, the chefs brought them out and explained them to us, so it was a great chance to meet the chefs too! The waiting staff are amazing as well, so polite, friendly, professional, and super on it without being overbearing. The ambiance and decor was also really welcoming. Its not a cheap meal, but for those very special occasions, it is utterly perfect.

Very much enjoyed every dish served on the tasting menu, and really loved the whole concept as well. Loved the fact you did not know what was coming next, it adds an element to the experience which I really enjoyed. Didnt have the wine pairing on this occasion, but the two wines I did have (a French chardonnay and a Gamay) were both delicious! Will definitely be returning as soon as possible for another wonderful culinary experience!

Dining here two nights after lockdown ended was exactly what the doctor ordered. It was hard to tell who was more excited - us or the staff. The food was excellent but really the whole experience was what made eating here a special night. From the imaginative food, to the perfectly matched wines to the enthusiasm of everyone we encountered here, everything was on point. If I had one suggestion it would be to have been given a record of the dishes we ate at the end of the meal. Recreating the menu the next day felt like a memory test and I am sure we forgot some dishes, but this is a minor quibble. Book,anticipate, visit, enjoy and tell your friends. The Small Holding is a great dinner and a wonderful treat.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first visit for dinner. The tasting menu was both delicious and creative. A good wine list from which we chose an English Pinot Gris from nearby Bodiam. Expensive but matched all the courses. Looking forward to returning and sampling with a wine flight.

Definitely worth a visit, the food was amazing and the wine pairing exquisitely well chosen and presented. It s also impossible to not leave happy after a fantastic dinner and about 6 glasses of wine. The ingredients sourced from the local garden are also fabulous and the staff is lovely.

Exceptional! We had the 11 course tasting menu at lunch and it was beautiful in taste and presentation. All the staff are welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu and its provenance and obviously love what they do. Highly recommended.

We love experiencing different places and fine food. The small holding did not let us down. I have read some of the previous reviews and the very small amount of negative ones. Trust me you will not be hungry when you leave. The taster menu had 9 courses. Every course beautifully presented and tasty. But be prepared to try food that you may have not in the past. You will be extremely impressed. If you are looking for fillet steak and chips this is not for you. If you want to experience a new culinary experience. This is a place to visit. The food is locally sourced, some from their holding. The staff are attentive and polite and extremely friendly. It is not overpriced. The bill was what I expected. A lovely gem that I shall certainly be returning to and recommend to others. Thank you for a wonderful experience

Second time here for lunch - this time with our two teenage daughters - and it was as fantastic as our first visit last Autumn. At £60 the nine course tasting menu (plus appetisers) is great value with a huge variety of flavours and textures at work. Service incredibly friendly and unpretentious; smallish dining room but doesnt feel crowded. Menu changes regularly. Highly recommended.

Underwhelming experience whilst visiting the beautiful countryside of Kent. We stayed near The Small Holding with some lovely hosts, stumbling upon it completely by accident, booking in for what we thought would be a fantastic tasting menu. The waitress serving our table seemed super anxious about her role, tried to make her feel more relaxed and at ease but didn t seem to help. It felt more like we had to provide the hospitality, no smiles or general chit chat. Enjoyed the general aesthetic of the place, especially with a lot of produce coming directly from their holding. Felt like most of the dishes we had came in too small, still left feeling hungry at the end of the tasting menu! Especially as this is such an expensive treat for a lot of people, leaving feeling like we still needed to eat something was deflating. Interesting dishes that seemed to fall short of quantity, the dish containing ants felt like somewhat of a unnecessary gimmick. The thing that bothered me the most was not feeling like staff wanted to make a genuine connection with customers, hospitality is a fine art and we would ve felt so good if we felt truly welcomed into this restaurant. I wouldn t recommend going here, beautiful location with some creative ideas which ultimately falls short with uninterested/inexperienced waiting staff.

Our first visit to the Small Holding was amazing. Unfortunately not so great this time. The staff were not nearly so attentive and the food not as wow!

I highly recommend the hamper from the Small Holding! Beautiful meats and local cheeses, freshly cooked bread and great portions of pesto and chutney to last all week. We loved the Lebanese red too. Matts email contact and flexibility with my requests was more than I could ask for and I cant wait to sample their offerings on site once restrictions are eased-an outdoor bar sounds wonderful too! Thank you once again Matt for making my partners Birthday a more special occasion whilst in lockdown.

Great food, very tentative

Amazing evening at The Small Holding this evening, all social distancing rules adhered to, lots of gel and hand sanitizer available. Of course the food was excellent in particular the mushroom dish and the duck, hopefully be back soon

What a culinary experience! No menu, every dish a surprise and 11+ courses later (we lost count as there were so many) we didnt feel like our stomachs would explode! The final, final, final, FINAL dessert board was sensational! We will definitely revisit the small holding.

Excellent food with local ingredients. We had a great time here, beautiful place and staff is very friendly and accommodating.

Wonderful food but, by fitting in two sittings before the 10 pm finish, courses came very quickly and we felt a little rushed. Appreciate the food changes daily but we would have liked a printed menu as it was sometimes hard to hear the description when staff wearing masks.

Fantastic restaurant, locally sourced produce. Excellent service. Highly recommend. COVID measures were above and beyond.

The food was creative and different in a good way. Probably one of our better meals for 2020 but there is a price to pay. Somewhere to go for a special evening. The downside is the 2 sittings and things were rushed. Perhaps one less course may work better?

Fabulous food, beautifully cooked.

I thought it was great, but my friends who have been before thought it just missed the mark compared to previous visits. It was a lovely day, so sitting outside with a drink after the meal was lovely.

It was an experience. My wife and I ordered 2 set menus which we ate over 2.5 hours. Every item was delicious, ethically sourced and novel. We are still talking about the experience.

The best all round dining experience weve had. Genuinely lovely staff who know there stuff and are happy to help and share their knowledge, fantastic chefs who cook up a delight and use as much seasonal produce from the onsite farm as possible with everything else being local. We had the best lunch here, loved everything about it, and got to meet the animals and see where the produce had come from that wed just eaten. A true gem of a find.

Stopped here while walking through Kilndown wood. Only had a beer but we got a very warm welcome. Sat on the terrace overlooking the garden. Interesting food options to explore on another occasion.

A beautiful place in the countryside for an evening celebratory meal for 4. We had the tasting menu with paired wines. A quirky menu with some interesting food combinations and wines, each explained by the chef as they were delivered to our table. Will definately be back!

My new favourite restaurant. Encompasses all my favourite things about small, local food production coupled with amazing service, phenomenal wine and impeccable service. So pleased that my family brought me here for my birthday. Well done all at the small holding.

One word describes the experience of eating here - exceptional. Every item of food is sourced locally where possible, much coming from the small farm attached to the property. The menu items are thus seasonal. Presentation is exquisite with great attention to detail. One of the chefs or a member of the serving staff will explain each dish and where all the ingredients come from. The tastes of the Half Acre menu in July 2019 were beautifully balanced. The service was discrete but friendly and professional. A new addition to the Kent dining scene not to be missed.

From the moment we arrived the staff were welcoming and friendly, they also have good knowledge about the dishes being served. Most importantly though the food is absolutely amazing, a true example of what can be achieved while sourcing the produce locally. A very nice little place. It has it all. Great service, food and drink. You can even have a bit of a wander around the small holding. I had the 1/2 tasting menu and mutton was worth the money on its own. However, I havent started the cheese yet so that might change. Edit. OMG, the cheese!!! I want to live here.

Did not let us in with children

We decided on this restaurant for our 15 year wedding anniversary based on reading the reviews and its safe to say we were not disappointed. Its a small setting in a rustic room. We had the full acre menu consisting of 10 courses. All 10 courses full of flavour. The best course for myself being the cauliflower soup followed closely by the mutton which was also my husbands favourite.we even sampled ants which accompanied the scallop dish. All in all a wonderful and memorable evening.

Outstanding. My partner and I had a wonderful evening here a few weeks ago. We opted for the the 10 course Full Acre with generous 4-glass wine pairing; my courses has been thoughtfully adapted to suit veggie/vegan dietary requirements which was a lovely touch. The atmosphere was super relaxed, and service was attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend!
