16 Portland St #101, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1G9, Canada
Me and my friends been there for the first time and place was really nice, cozy and great service. We reached on kitchen closing time and chef was already left , but still another member from the bar( may be was the owner) initiative and made Delicious nachos for us. It was great service.
What a great spot, dispute the HFX traffic. Good atmosphere, tunes and service. Brews will please all palates and food meets the mark.
Best pub in Dartmouth! The food menu is carefully crafted and the brews are diverse and very well made. Grab a seat at the outdoor patio with a view of the harbour.
A perfect score! 10 out of 10! (my wife shares my opinion). 💯🔥 We had the Beef Jerker (burger week entry) with fries. It pairs perfectly with the Slowburn Chocolate Chilli Porter! For dessert we had the Gingerbread. OMG!!!! All were perfection. The wait staff, Elliyah and Erin - forgive me if the spelling is off, we’re an absolute delight. A perfect example of how the right atmosphere can lift a meal to new heights. They gave me and my wife one of the best pub experiences of my life and I’m no spring chicken. Also my compliments to the chef. I don’t think they could have made it any better unless they came up with some sort of spicy ketchup for the fries.
Great clothing shop which reflects their brewery and New Scotland clothing and merchandise. Very friendly and informed staff service in the store. The Tap which is the adjoining restaurant is very cozy. Live music in the evening. Nice deck and patio overlooking the Halifax Harbor. Service is fantastic, very friendly and informative. A small jewel and small business in the center of downtown Dartmouth.
Great atmosphere, really great drink options! The Alderney Dry Lager is for sure worth a try! The fries starter is amazing and delicious! They have amazing live music concerts which really brought the place alive! Will go again!
My spouse and I had dinner at New Scotland Brewing Company last night. They have just opened their new location about 2 months in. There are some growing pains. We did not have reservations and we, like everyone else wanted patio seating, but it was full. We waited a little long to get seated and we’re offered a great selection of beers but a bunch of the taps were not working. We ordered our food and it arrived within minutes, almost too fast. My wife ordered a glass of wine but it got behind a bunch of flight orders so I had to ask for it. The response was that” I put the order in” Food was really good, much better than pub I had shrimp pasta dish and she had exceptional good gnocchi with Brussels sprouts. We look forward to going again when they get the front of house / back of house better coordinated.
What a great spot in downtown Dartmouth! We popped in for a quick drink to check the place out and ended up chatting with the most pleasant employee... and ended up ordering pizza from their neighbouring pizza shop, Stone's Pizza. Such a fun spot - we will be back!
After a false start with a billing error, I did a tasting and I must say that I really liked their beers. They are excellent. The place is also very nice with a bar and restaurant side. I will come back to see you on my next trip to Halifax. Ps: congratulations to the responsiveness of the establishment which immediately reimbursed me for an excess bill. Thank you
Rude staff
Quality and generosity! Could we ask for better? Thank you for this beautiful moment of peace and joy!
OK on nights when there s events or music you need to have more staff on because waiting an hour for a drink is a bit much.
Great venue. Cozy Atmosphere. Friendly staff. Yummy beverages (beers and seltzers).
Always delicious food.
Garrett Mason was unreal. Great food and vibes.
The food and service were great. The seating is uncomfortable, though.
I was there after the Christmas holiday and before New Years, with my parents who were visiting. The food we had was good but it wasnt setting the world on fire. I cant say the menu is designed to attract any demographic over 40. My biggest issue was the beer. We had two flights of eight different kinds of beer. Six of them were warmish to cool and four them were just plain flat. On their side, they did have four tables walk in right away and they seem to be a little understaffed. When I mentioned it to the server they kind of addressed it half-heartedly and then shrugged and walked away. I understand things happen but they could have at least pretended to care.
They are not ready to serve all their tables... Terrible date night. The beer is ok but the service is just bad. We were excited to try the food and we told our server that well be ordering food and she never came back. We left the table and paid our bill at the entrance cause nobody came to us. Just not okay!
The food was amazing, the beers were even better. The only downfall that there wasn t any changing tables. Our server realized quickly our need for a changing table, and brought myself and my baby to a side room so I could change him. Hopefully they get some changing tables soon because this is a great restaurant for families with strollers. Lots of space and relaxing atmosphere.
Oh yes!
Friendly service and tasty fries.
Great night!! Amazing music!! Food was fabulous!! Staff was so fun and welcoming!! The perfect location to see Horsbath as part of the ECMA concert series Dietary restrictions: I need to eat gluten free and had fish and chips with no issues at all. All batter is gluten free!!
This place was loud! But the food was great. I wish we had seen the patio out back it may have been quieter out there. Excellent selection of wines and beers and this was the first time Id seen multiple dark beers, stouts and porters on a menu. I hope I can find this brand the next time Im at the LC.
great service, awesome fried chicken and fries, stout was on point, cheers!
Great service, friendly staff
When I first got posted to NS, I looked for a phenomenal beer. I wasnt used to the people, let alone thr windy roads, but I found kindness and great beer here. FFW I got used to thing that were closer by, but then I saw this place on Doordash. Honestly, the quality of the food reminded me of the feeling the entire company gave me when I first moved here. Amazing food, amazing staff. To J,
Really cozy looking place in Dartmouth. Would definitely recommend the food. It was served quite fast and well prepared. Would love some more options for food. Huge collection of drinks to choose from. The server was really nice as well and offered us discount on the drinks for the slight delay.
Good music, good beer, good service. This is a nice spot for a meal or to see some excellent live music. I ve tried a dozen or so of their beers and haven t had a bad one yet.
A great find.Great service from Selena.A great view while on the patio ,and the food was awesome. The best Fish n Chips on our trip so far!!!!
Drinks were okay, never had the chance to get food, our server made a small mix-up with our order but she was overall sweet and friendly. We DID however overhear the bartender making some comments about our party on the way in, she gave some noticeable attitude towards us too when asking any questions. Somewhat soured the experience.
A HUGE thank you to Mike and the crew for customizing and delivering our Wedding Day drinks!!! I didn t even know someone could customized labels for us!! What a keepsake from our special day!!! THANK YOU from the Newlyweds
Friendly and attentive. Delicious food. Nice view and breeze off the water.
Lovely patio area, server was very nice. Sadly there were no cocktails available and only tap drinks. Should have looked closer before going in. Food was just ok.
Cool spot with a great vibe. Love the new outdoor patio. Lots of great beer choices on tap. Check it out!
Been a customer since opening day a few years ago on Alderney dr,great craft brews and amazing service.
Enjoyed drinks and apps here while listening to the live music. Their local wine (tidal bay) was very good! The nachos were also quite tasty interesting mix of hot and sweet flavour. However, a few people at our table found the nacho chips to be a bit too salty. We had a great time here, and glad we chose it to celebrate our last night in Dartmouth with family.
Great food menu and lots of beer options for all tastes. Nice patio space and live music offerings. Wide variety in the gift shop ($$$)
Poor atmosphere, poor service, okay food. The lighting in the venue is horrible. After sunset its dark enough that any seat not directly under one of the dimly lit overhead lights will have trouble reading the menu. I had no idea if the nachos I had received had the pulled pork on them or not unless I pulled out a flashlight. Service was slow. Was it busy? Yes. Was it known that it was going to be busy? Yes, this was a planned event. We arrived before it was busy, it still took nearly ten minutes to get an initial drink order in. By the time we did multiple soft drinks and beers listed on the menu werent available. Flights took so long to arrive from the bar that everything was room temperature by the time it was on the table. Soft drinks were consistently flat. Despite asking three times for more water to be brought to the table to help combat the uncomfortably warm venue, the server never brought any. Food orders were submitted and, despite appetizers being ordered as appetizers, everything was submitted to the kitchen to come out at the same time. The deep fried cheese curds were flavourless mush. The nachos, while listed as coming with hot sauce and sour cream, certainly dont indicate that the hot sauce and sour cream will be poured all over the pile of nachos and not served on the side. Not a fun surprise. As noted above, I wouldnt have known there was pulled pork on them had I not pulled out a light to check. The event was meant to be a ceilidh, and while the band which was brought in were top notch, they were practically inaudible in the small venue. When asked to split the bills, the server disregard the instruction and combined bills which shouldnt have been combined. Overall, an entirely disappointing evening and I see no reason to return to the venue in the future.
Great taste. Refreshing.
Unfriendly staff. Horrible communication skills. I walked in at 6:15pm with a group of 8. The hostess sat us and let us know there was live music at 8pm and we would need to pay $10 cover. The music started at 7pm which I thought was them warming up and the staff would let us know at 8pm that we would need to pay cover or we d have to finish up and leave. A few of us ordered food around 7:15pm which took a while to get there, so by the time we received it it was close to 8pm. No one came over so I thought they were being polite and letting us finish the food and drinks we ordered. At that point the band was sitting with their friends/family at a table close to the stage and not even playing anymore. I asked for my bill and when the waiter hands the machine over says hes added the 20% gratuity to the machine already. And the $10 cover was added to the bill. When leaving I questioned the amount that was charged for gratuity and cover and he said its normal practice to add for groups of 8 or more, which I would have been fine with if it was told to us prior to sitting down and ordering. And said the hostess told us the incorrect time. During the conversation he also tried to tell me we were informed about the 20% gratuity which none of us were so essentially calling me a liar.
Did some mid-afternoon drinks here for my bday! Had an amazing time! The staff were super friendly and attentive. Joel was great, he definitely helped make it a wonderful bday! He also put up with my grandfathers shenanigans, and that takes a lot of patience. :) we shopped in the gift shop too and it was the same amazing service. Everyone was just very pleasant overall.
Decent beer. The food was not all that great and the ambience was pedestrian. Friendly service though.
This place wouldn t stamp our good cheer passport. And the guy was kind of a douche about it.
Dirty bathroom and staff were rude.
The four of us stopped in to try the beer and a meal. Ended up having excellent Oysters and music from 4 talented ladies. Disappointed to find out there was a cover charge added to the bill. We had no idea. On the way out we noticed in small letters the cover charge. No complaints about the show, you just shouldnt be surprised when you look at your bill.
Great, complex beers. This brewery tasting room just screams tasting flight. Many spectacular offerings from the entire beer spectrum. Some very serious IPAs for the IPA Uber nerds.
Great beer, fantastic staff and the best, chilling atmosphere.
Pretty sure this was the first Nova Scotia craft beer I taste-tested on vacation 2018. Fast forward a few years and we live here. Handcrafted beer is one of the best things going in Dartmouth-Halifax. Hop on the ferry and visit New Scotland for fresh brew and branded gear.
Been meaning to check this place out for a couple years. Was not disappointed, they have a large selection of beers on tap and one mead, and was treated to some unexpected live music
Fast friendly service. Their Bonnie (German Style Beer) is delicious.
Such a kind staff and of course, AMAZING beer!
Visiting from out of town and finally found a Dog friendly patio! Great spot to grab a quick pint on a hot day and amazing selection of beers and super friendly service.
Visiting from Ontario. Stopped in and grabbed a variety pack. We loved every single kind. This a really really good beer.
All the food we tried was absolutely fantastic and service was really great too. Muscles and Frites, Birria Quesotacos, and 4 cheese Gnocchi were all must haves. Cant wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.
Wide selection of hand-crafted brews, spot on hazy and hoppy selection too.
Checked out there new location for the first time and what a disappointment. We made a reservation for the patio but when we got there we were told that there was a Boat Cruise coming and they patio was booked for them. We were there for a few hours and still no boat cruise. Our server was very rude and slow. One person wasn t drinking and the server seemed very offended about this. Food was a bit over priced for what it was. Especially since side hustle is just across the street. Just a all around bad experience. Will not return even though we live 5 mins away.
Great new location.
Great beers and food, nicely spiced. We had two different flights and really enjoyed ourselves.
Great space, great staff and great food! We did a tasting of 8 beers and all were really good. Loved the roman fried artichoke and halibut cheeks and chips. Their menu is well balanced and we would have loved to try a few more dishes...but so full!
Fantastic food and fantastic service.
Interesting product lineup, but one is made to feel like a criminal reprobate for wanting to taste it before buying. Thanks. FREE MARKETING ADVICE: Get TF over yourselves. Whats the point of having a retail space if youre gonna treat customers like that?
I miss the old spot :(
really good beer and food at a correct price, the fish and chips are goods but could be less salt on the fries
Stopped by the new retail location today to grab a few cold ones to go. I went in for my usual, St. Andrews Cross and something caught my eye - a #Brightwood and #newscotlandbrewing collaboration!! And I am not disappointed. Wallonia - Cranberry Farmhouse Ale. I am in love! Thank you both for your contributions to the city of Dartmouth!
Great food, great service, great drinks and great ambiance music
They canceled a 16 person reservation on me to accommodate a private party. A reservation I had for over a month. The beer is terrible.
So heres the deal: this is probably the best Sunday brunch spot in HRM. Because its seemingly undiscovered, theres no wait for a table and food is fired immediately- weve always gotten our courses within 10 minutes max. And THE FOOD. The scrambled egg tacos are literally one of the best brunch dishes Ive had in HRM (the others are next door at Canteen). Everything weve tried has been delicious. The staff are wonderful, and the vibe is friendly and unpretentious. Bonus points for excellent music every time weve visited. Weve pretty much decided that Sunday brunch at Root Down is a new household tradition.
Really friendly staff! The NEIPA and Aldernay Dry Session Lager were tasty beverages that I would order and drink again. I understand why Best of Halifax would recognize this place!
Good food, locally brewed signature beer, nice location and good customer service.
Great tipple and nibble!
Amazing service, amazing beer! 10/10 would recommend
Great place to relax and have some good beer
Great place. I enjoyed my past two visits. Kilted IPA is awesome. The waitress did assume my gender to be male which was ultimately correct, so no problems there.
Great staff. Great beers. Can you ask for much more from a craft tap room?
Mike is THE BEST
The service here was delightful and I had a great time chatting with the brewmaster and staff about their beers. The selection covered much of the spectrum of beer styles from light to dark, sweet to dry, and fruity to more savory tastes. The staff were very knowledgeable and fun to talk with - they even let me do some office work here and accomodated an outlet for my laptop! I would highly recommend checking out this place! P.S. They also gave me a fresh baked cookie made from the spent grains of a recent brew batch. Very yummy
The service was excellent and the beer was really great!
Good beer, well located
Great selection of beers, also warm and friendly staff. The Beachcomber and Light At The End Of The Tunnel are my two favourites, both excellent beers with amazing flavours. Also, check out their new outdoor terrace, which has superb views over the water of downtown Halifax. Definitely my favourite bar / brewery in Nova Scotia.
We visited New Scotland Brewing for an evening out. Terra Spenser intertained us with wonderful songs and guitar playing. The BBQ pizza from Stones Pizza across the street was delicious and warm and we enjoyed several beer and ciders. The venue is small but intimate. New Scotland Brewing is commended for hosting live music and giving us the chance to hear great musicians from the local area.
Always a good rotation of new beers and older favourites, constantly improving.
They have really good beer. A great space in Dartmouth. now maybe a rooftop patio #IPA kilted
The place was so nice from a food and beverage standpoint, but then we had the added bonus of the inestimable Megan singing and playing the guitar. Janice Joplin has nothing on this girl and it was an amazing experience!
5 people in the shop in a Sunday afternoon and we couldnt get served.
How do I know Im home?!? When I can pop in for a pint and see the friendliest staff and enjoy my favourite pint with friends
Chill, down to earth atmosphere, unpretentious and friendly. Had some great cider and snacks, and will definitely be coming back to try some of the beers and check out the live music.
Great beer, great service, great atmosphere, and they even have great live music! New favorite brewery
Great beer, live music and a community feel
Great spot, great beer and cider, and the staff are fantastic, friendly and fun to talk with. Will definitely be back many times
Mike and Dylan need a bartenders Pod cast!
A great neighbourhood brew pub! A fun place to kick back and enjoy some tunes! We enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the patio. Great beer. Social distancing appropriate! Will be back!!!
Awesome pub to hang out at and have a few beers with friends and the service is excellent!
The big guy at the door was rude. We left. First impression sucked.
Great variety of craft brews. You can order personal or large sized pizzas thorough their partnership with a place down the street that are equally awesome.
Awesome place to spend a beautiful afternoon and enjoy nice cold beer!!! Great tasting beer for every preference!!
Absolutely Delightful!
Pretty solid place. Good beer, and no nonsense. Try a flight and get a growler if you can. Live music and a small venue make for a cozy little spot to grab a beer or two on a summer night.
Love this place. Simple brewery style, but really cozy feel. Beer was amazing, and lots of variety.
Great beer, friendly staff and they run it wonderfully infused with NS culture.
Yummy beer
Today was my second time here. Both times the staff were amazing. Super chill vibe, great place to hang out. Would love to be a regular here.
Hosted an amazing Christmas party!
Great beer and atmosphere!
Great beer and the partnership with Stone Pizza is great. They will deliver pizza to the brewery.
I came here for my first time today. Their beer is delicious, and the atmosphere is great. As an added bonus, the bartender was absolutely hilarious and very knowledgable about their beers. While they dont make their food on site, this is actually a great thing because they work with Stone Pizza to have both delicious pizza and beer!
LIAM AND DYLAN, coolest cats, craft-tenders around. Great Beer/Mead. Always a treat when Im down there.
Cozy, comfortable and the beer was very tasty. Also like that they order in pizza from a local pizza shop (should give a big SO for that pizza shop, Stone Pizza, as well- like the beer it was very tasty too!)
Great beer, great sevice and a neet venue.
No complaints about this place! The staff have all been extremely knowledgeable and friendly each time Ive gone in and best of all they have stone pizza! YUM! I didnt realize this until my last visit but you can order off the stone pizza menu and they will go over and bring it to you. I think its great to see local businesses working together and it doesnt hurt that the beer tastes great too!
Cozy spot with a great view of the harbour. Tons of options on tap. There is usually something interesting happening on their small stage from music, trivia, comedy or just a couple of dudes spinning vinyl. The staff is great and the bar is a great place to grab a stool and insert yourself into interesting conversations. Very inclusive and welcoming. The food is outsourced at this time, but they have picked a great supplier in Stone Pizza next door. I have only ever had their pizza and nachos but both are fantastic.
A little spot right to the left as you hop off the Alderney ferry, it s the perfect local gem. Excellently crafted beer, the most wonderful welcome (we re from Toronto), not to mention that the pizza place next store delivers into the tap room until 6pm. Also, great live music!
Best kept secret in HRM. With the number of brew pubs growing this one is a gem with lots of live music. Oh and the beer is amazing too
If you like the Hip, Arcade Fire, great food(wood-fired pizza) delicious beer, friendly staff, free board and card games and proximity to the ferry and waterfront this place is for you! They have an IPA with an IBU of 100 but it is so good you have a hard time to appreciate its hoppy quality. This place is a gem of Dartmouth, I loved it!!
Friendly service and delicious beer!
I first found this little gem on the first day I moved to Nova Scotia from BC. The incredible selection of fresh brewed beer and hospitality from bartender Carsten was welcoming and approachable which kept me coming back regularly. They have regular entertainment and if not the crowd is always friendly and willing to strike up a conversation! True East Coast hospitality!
Various options on tap, friendly staff and great outdoor seating!
Super casual atmosphere. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and I hadnt been before. The waitress invited us to sit anywhere wed like and I said, we were looking for a bite to eat so we might not stay. Oh, were partnered up with Stone Pizza, she said. And I had not yet tried Stone Pizza either so we decided to stay. I am a fan of fruity beers and ciders so i tried their Bush Berry Cider that had Haskap berry in. I loved the tartness of it. One of the best ciders I have ever had. So refreshing. We opted to order up a small nachos and a small pizza. It was more than enough for the two of us. They just brought the pizza boxes and some napkins to the table. No plates or cutlery. Like I said, casual. We didnt mind that at all. I liked the chill vibe. The owner was there milling about. The place has a neighbourhood vibe that is exactly what I love about Dartmouth. Its not a huge space, but modern and cozy. Theres a small stage for live music.
New Scotland is a hidden gem. The beer is great and the owners take a lot of pride in creating an authentic east coast experience. I have played fiddle at a lot of pubs and this is one of the few that truly cares about their musicians and patrons. I just wish that the pub was larger so that it could hold more people but it is also great just as it is!
New Scotland Brewing is located just above the ferry landing and is a great place to go in and enjoy a great bear. We got two flights of beers here because the selection was extensive. We really enjoyed the beer, and the people watching. The staff was very nice and helped us pick some great beer from their selection.
The beer was great and the bartender Mike was so kind, funny and knowledgable. The bar was cozy but had some larger tables groups of 8. I highly recommend spending your next rainy night here :-)
Great beer and service
Very clean beer! I really enjoyed their beers! I also enjoyed the pizza that they ordered for us. If you have the chance you should stop in! Be careful when parking, there is a private lot next to brewery. We got a ticket... that was the only downside, but that is not the breweries fault.
Great staff and good beer! We were there just a few days after opening and it was great! Only downside is they don t have cans so we were not able to take any home (they do have growlers, however we don t live in the province so we would prefer cans)
This place is a great addition to Dartmouth and gives an alternative to Celtic Corner (which is good but the bands get WAY too loud). Friendly bar staff/brewer/owners, great beer and a chill environment. Perfect for chatting with friends over a pint.
Awesome little brewery with lighter fare food options.
New favourite brewery and bar in general, service is amazing. The variety and quality of the various beers/Meads/ciders is bar none in the city, in my opinion. I love going in and trying all the new brews they have to offer, it is a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere!
Nice beer... friendly staff
Great beer, great staff, great hook up on the pizza!
All though I am not a beer fan I have gone in and tried their ciders on tap. The owner was so helpful at trying to find something I would like. :) a must go!! Beer lover or not!
Now this place has the right idea. Great service and atmosphere. A really fun vibe, the beer is cold and the selection will only get better according to the staff. A place I can definitely see myself frequenting as often as I frequent Battery Park. An excellent addition to Dartmouth right from the get go. And they have live music to boot. Looking forward to my next visit.
Great addition to downtown Dartmouth. Friendly staff and tasty drinks!
Good selection nice staff
Quit good beers, locally-speaking and a social, casual atmosphere. Excellent stout, globally speaking.
Good beer, really nice atmosphere
Small and inviting space, with a great selection of delicious craft beer
Fantastic venue, beer and service. Absolutely recommended
Awesome atmosphere and the beer is great. Definitely recommend their XPA or any of the meads. Staff are great too.
The beers are fantastic and the service is awesome!
