136 Portland St, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1H9, Canada
My first week in Dartmouth, went out to eat with two of my friends. Food was horrible, we ordered chicken Chowmein but they brought beans sprout a few pieces of dried and stale chicken stuffed in soy sauce. Other foods like egg rolls, fried rice were stale too. We asked server (server was nice) to change it but instead Chinese lady came and said she can't do anything. Food was horrible at its best. The worst restaurant experience in my life. At this point they should realise how bad their food is and close down the restaurant. We ordered: Dinner for 3: $65 Drinks - 2 diet coke: $7 We asked hot sauce but they charged for that as well: $1 Total bill was $80 but we barely ate anything. We are outgoing and we don't mind paying for food , but this is absolutely scam. I urge everyone reading this review, please please stay away from this restaurant and save your money. If I have to rate, food is absolutely 0/5. Please close down.
Was not a fan. Chicken balls were mostly soggy dough, sauce was flavorless. The rest of the food wasn't much better.
Ordered takeout for my nephew to pick up and I put his name as the pick up person for the order. He arrived to pick up the order and was told that there wasn’t an order for him. He waited one hour for the restaurant to figure out that they did in fact have his order. I had sent him the text confirmation and he had the phone number of the order but it still took the restaurant one hour to determine that they did in fact have the order which by then had been sitting for one hour and was therefore stone cold when it was finally given to him. Update. Nephew ate his General Guy Chicken and let me know it was not at all like the chicken on the website and that the sauce was not good at all. Probably tasted worse due to the fact it was cold. I haven’t received feedback for the 2 combo plates that the others ate. Restaurant food is expensive. I am not happy when I feel like I have wasted my money. I always add a tip on take out orders, but I wished I had not rewarded this negative experience with a tip. We have ordered take out from Modern Orchid Dartmouth Crossing for pickup by another party and have never encountered any problem.Their food has always been hot and delicious and very reasonably priced.
Terrible. I think my ginger beef was cooked last week. So soggy and pale in colour.
Stopped by briefly for a quick bite. Egg roll was good I enjoyed the plum sauce but I have no idea what the filling inside was. Atmosphere reminds me of an authentic Chinese restaurant. Waitstaff was extremely quick but we were also the only ones in the restaurant.
Honestly not bad. The ordered a few dishes, egg rolls, hot and sour soup and a black bean beef dish. The egg roll was good, well filled and reasonably priced. The roll was crispy but not hard. The hot and sour soup was excellent. Had BBQ pork slices in it and lots of wood ear. It had a good tang! The black bean beef stir fry. This was ok, the ratio of peppers and onion to beef was a bit much. The portion size was good but really could use more beef and less peppers. The black bean sauce was excellent though, salty good blackbean! Service was top notch! They were quick and courteous, and exceptionally thoughtful. They brought us spare soup bowels to share and seperate plates for us to share the dishes. Interior was very good, felt like an older chinese restaurant, but otherwise clean and well spaced. The fish tank at the centre of the restaurant was also a nice touch. Parking, it's all street parking in the area but that is par for the course as it's downtown.
Better to go order somewhere else they are extremely cheap. I ordered beef with vegetables and specially asked for less vegetables instead they loaded my order with extra vegetables and 4 pieces of beef.
Friendly service. Decor is crossover Chinese and western. They do have this well-known Chinese painting QingMing ShangHe Tu embossed from the wall. It's rather nice to sit and dine "beside the river". Their egg rolls are one of the best. Stir fry rice goes great with veggie or pork rib. Wanton soup gives my little one a great appetite and a full stomach. Overall it's a place you would want to visit once or twice a month.
I like the almond guy ding.
Excellent customer service excellent communication
Food
The food was delicious, the service was also great. We were the only table there but the take out was very busy!! I would go back for sure (or order from there)!!
I went to eat here a lot during the earlier hours of the day. It was very quiet and pleasant, and the food was fantastic. The waiters were very chatty and interested in learning a little about us. Although I do not live in the area, this restaurant and the food are one of the major things I miss and will revisit when I am back in the area.
Jst came for a quick meal with family. Randomly tried the bean veg sprout chowmein, then fried rice with veggies. It was best ever tasty veg meal for us. Spring roll though bit expensive for the quantity but was worth trying.Service was awesome. Great homely place with such positive and inquisitive environment. We ended up ordering 3 more dishes from menu . They were all so delectable neither very spicy nor mild.
My spouse and I, came for a quick bite . Took out combo 8, fairly expensive for the amount u get. More rice than anything else for the price . Ribs were dry and looked 2 days old. Chicken balls were fluffy but felt like not enough meat. Sweet and sour didn t really taste like sweet and sour sauce. Tasted as if it was watered down. Bland. Didn t know this place was known for explosive diarrhea. Staying at home for the rest of the evening as a precaution. Wouldn t recommend to my worst enemy. Service was great and fast tho. Personal shoutout with guy with black nail polish. Excellent customer service .
Hello my partner & I visited the Dartmouth location for lunch just to be extremely disappointed when we came home. First of all, for almost $30, we received more rice than anything else. The ribs looked sad and lacked flavour. Resembling the texture of carpet. Chicken balls were mostly dough not chicken, watered down sweet & sour sauce. Fried rice was decent though I only noticed that there was approximately 3 pieces of chicken in the entire entree. Rice was the only thing cooked well After eating our very sad lunch, my partner felt a little uneasy so we decided to look at reviews. Was very surprised to see that this place was well known for the explosive diarrhea & food poisoning. Now we are praying we survive this evening. Should ve noticed the 2 caucasian males working service as the first red flag. Considering that I am half Chinese, my chinese mother wouldve cried if I brought her here. Sorry but never coming back, pls do better.
Poor timing not respect the customers. I am waiting from 40 minutes and still not getting my order
Ive ordered from here a few times, partly because I forgot about the last experience. This is not a good Chinese food restaurant. Its really cheap quality but not super cheap pricing, kind of flavourless. Just really not great. Not trying to be malicious, just have had the food here enough and been disappointed everytime. Youre better off going to the Chinese food place at a mall food court.
Staff was great, and friendly food was pretty good overall, great for takeout or leftover! Definitely worth the quick visit
Really gone downhill, place had a smell and atmosphere comes of dark and dingy.
Took the food home to eat it.
great staff
Food was not as good as said by others. Food was cooked well but bland and not much flavour, beef in rice dish was very tough. Likes texture of meat egg roll but again very bland; not much flavour
Very poor quality food. Had a special. The SS chicken balls had almost no chicken. The sauce had no flavour. Chicken fried rice was basically rice. Almost. I need in beef n broccoli. Very disappointed.
Worst place ever, dont go here. After eating my friend got stomach ache.
Worst place to eat food. A place well know for instant explosive diarrhea ( Food Poising). I hope the relevant authorities take some action on it. Not recommended at all.
I ve been to this restaurant several times and had fairly good experiences, but got incredibly sick last weekend after eating here, and am still ill. After reading similar reviews I felt compelled to post. Obviously something is going wrong in the kitchen.
Went for dinner, food was cold and when I asked for another plate that was hot the server was denied by kitchen staff. The young gentleman who was serving us tried his best.
Great food.
Just ordered from here for the first time - food was fantastic!!!
I will not return just not very good......my opinion based on my take out experience. If you want good Chinese house of lamb in Moncton nb is great. Halifax is just a lot of hype.
I love their egg rolls best in the city but not as good as the double Dragon in New Minas. Fried rice was way overpriced but acceptable in flavour.
Very nice staff
May Garden has always had great service and the food is delicious. They give decent portions and always fresh. This is always my go to place when I m in the mood for Chinese food.
Worst service Ive ever had. Ther is no cutlery and I am eating out at a hotel. They gave me an incorrect order and didnt provide anything I asked for. I would never recommend anyone get this chinese.
Do not order from here I ordered a meal and waited 2 hours and no delivery I called and asks to speak to a manager and thier employee sara told me theres nothing they can do they use a delivery service. She did not care that I never received my food so basically paid them $25 for nothing
Delicious and good sized portions. Great service.
We are sooooo disappointed that you do not have your very delicious May Garden Special Egg Rolls on the menu. It has always been the hilite of many a meal, as well as the family & friends. Not the same anymore. Please bring them back
Food was good and wait staff very helpful. Completely different experience then the one we had in lower sackville location.
Surprised at the number of negative reviews. Any time Ive ordered the food was great. The only complaint I would have is they are a bit pricey. But its always been good!
Love the food and they have the absolute best meat egg rolls anywhere!
Food is good here
Ordered, order was cancelled because they were out of something (let me know after waiting 20 minutes) . Reordered, then called in to confirm everything was ok with the 2nd order, and then NEVER EVER SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO WORK IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY AGAIN TOUGH LADY ON THE PHONE told me First of all we dont have any doordash orders, so you need to lose the attitude (I said doordash instead of uber eats). I just hung up from there. Ordered 07/13 830pm, hope you fire this pathetic excuse for a customer service rep for your business!!! Food was average for May Gardens
I try to eat at May Garden at least twice to three times a month. We absolutely love the friendly staff and vary clean. And to be honest I am greatly appreciative of their policy...No Mask= No service ,
Very good food and fast
Not sure why theres so many negative reviews but I found the food and customer interactions are good.
Always fast, hot, and delicious. Great value too.
Ordered Beef and Broccoli, 6 Egg Rolls, Fried Rice and Chop Suey, received no fortune cookies. The Beef and Broccoli was 5% Beef, 70% broccoli and 25% onion, all very soggy, all very tasteless and extremely dry. The rice tasted like Oven cleaner. Egg Rolls were cold. Chop Suey wasn t all that bad but not enough to save a $55 meal. The worst part is that I have ordered from here before and really liked it, now I ll never take my business here again. You cannot seriously expect me to pay an arm and a leg, get fed worse than my dog (who ALSO didn t enjoy any of it), and not even throw in any fortune cookies. To circle back to that, how is that even possible? Literally everywhere else you pay that price they would throw them in. We re talking like a .50 cent bit of sugar here. Really not asking for much. Needless to say, the whole experience was awful and I will not be ordering ever again. Would give 0 stars if possible. Tempted to try and get a refund. EDIT: Forgot to mention there was no cutlery either. Not a problem since I had some obviously, but worth mentioning.
Just the right place for North America Chinese cuisine been at this location for over 60 years, great people! Always fresh and tasty and great portions and reasonable prices.
Omg we loved this place and it was the best Chinese food I had in a long , long time . The staff was amazing. Keep up the amazing job guys .
Food is good. The servings are large. Nice quiet restaurant. It is great for groups. After each meal is 10 to $15. They also offer takeout.
Terrible customer service, terrible website to order from. Does not show proper options for combos or explain the ingredients, and after a misunderstanding THEY WOULD NOT EVEN REPLACE RICE on a $60 order, with a tip. Didnt include requested chopsticks or even napkins. This place is trash, will not order from here again.
I would give no stars if I could. I ordered 70$ worth of food, with a tip, and accidentally ordered mai garden rice on the mobile app thinking it was the chicken fried rice(It had no description - the only other option was shrimp rice). When I called to get the order figured out(I literally CANT eat shrimp) I found out what happened, but they wouldnt help me out at all - the only option I had was to BUY more rice. Horrible customer service, very unprofessional. I didnt even ask for everything to be replaced even though shrimp touched everything - JUST the rice. Super unreasonable and cheap of them to not help out a loyal customer(Was going here for years before but will be switching to exclusively Heng Fung now - They have better prices, customer service and quality anyways) Sometimes its nice to switch it up but this place will no longer be on my roster of choices thanks to tonights unprofessionalism and cheapness.
At first I was told I could substitute two dishes into the family of four special but come to find out they added six dollars to do that. After tax and tip this was a $90 take out meal. Too expensive in my opinion for standard Chinese food
Picked up for dear old mom on her birthday and she was not disappointed. Reliably good food.
Good bang for buck Chinese food. Foods consistently good
Quality wasnt like I remembered.
I like my Chinese food and have eaten at almost all the Chinese restaurants in metro Halifax. Saying that May Garden on Portland St is a little retro in its appearance... however the food is excellent, reasonably price and the service has always been excellent.
Very good food
Love everything here
Giving 1 start is to high as far as im concernd. The winch that answered the phone was very rude, had to much attitude when I asked a question so rude that I lost my appetite and canceled my order. I do not appreciate having to deal with ignorant ppl. I was nice to them. Ill never ever order from them again
Standard Canadian Chinese fair.
I like asian food. Unfortunately the food here is not properly cooked and they add bad quality oil to rice. It is also overpriced
Good Chinese restaurant
I ordered: #9 with veg rice, extra eggroll. I got: #9 with chicken rice, 1 spring roll. Called and they reluctantly offered for me to come pick up the missing items, and even reiterated back to me 1 veg rice and 2 egg rolls. I rushed back because it was closing time. When I arrived a lady came to the door and passed me a paper bag so I accepted it, thanked her and left. In the bag was just 2 egg rolls, no veg rice. At that point they were closed so I just accepted I would be having chicken rice. Not a very good experience.
It s just terrible. I ordered hot&sour soup, beef fried rice with a kind of fried chicken and egg roll. Non of them are normal, soup is overcooked and bitty. And my stomach hurts RN. Never, never, never go to this place!
Walked in with my wife shortly after 8. We were told very unapologetically that we couldnt be seated because they close at 9. We told her that it was about 8:10 but she still would not seat us. She said we could order takeout if we wanted so we placed an order and went for a short walk outside while we waited. I walked back in about 15 min later. She was at the back of the restaurant. Instead of walking out to great me she pointed to a bag on the counter and told me it was my order. After about a 20 min drive home, realized we were given someone elses order.
We placed an order the other day and when no one showed up the lil *B* who answered the phone told us the driver called our number twice(which he didnt) and that he rang our door bell(which he didnt) as I was home literally all day! We then called down to see what was going on and that *B* put us on hold and never came back! And when we hot through again, she got someone else to answer as she was too much of a pxssy bxtch to talk to us! We DONT recommend this place and we will never order from them again.
Awesome food !!
The food here is grossly over priced for what you get and its extremely bland and disappointing. We got the Cantonese chowmein which barely had any noodles and was basically all celery and broccoli, the salt and pepper shrimp (which looked nothing like the photo on their website) was gross and soggy, the ginger beef was just a mushy mess and the chefs special pork was mostly onions and pineapple. Its one of the worst meals Ive had in the city and highly recommend going somewhere else for Chinese food. Even if your craving Chinese save your money and go somewhere else. Definitely not worth it.
Exceptional service and fresh hot food as always
May garden Chinese restaurant has been around forever on Portland Street, or so it seems to me since I was a kid I can remember this place. The food is wonderful the staff is friendly helpful and it has an old world charm.
The food here was good but slightly more expensive than I would ve expected
Food was really good
Worst experience ever. Do not try and order on line. They will not acknowledge your order, decline your credit card and then try to deliver to you! Crooks.
Not the best overall experience. My almond soo Gai was soft and mushy, not crunchy like youd expect. Seemed that it wasnt cooked enough for the amount of batter on it. The rice was dry, even though it clearly comes with quite a bit of soy sauce on it, indicated by the color. The meat paté egg rolls are something I just cant get behind. Thats more of a personal choice, but I wish there was a different version instead of just meat paste. Overall, not the worst, but also not great. Could definitely use with some better quality control. Will search elsewhere for Chinese next time around.
I have always enjoyed fresh food and great service here. They can do Cantonese or Canadian style Chinese tfood. My only complaint is that they aren t serving dim sum, which I hope they can fit I to their business model. Fans is great, but it isn t downtown! We need dim sum on Portland!! My only fear is I would have to wait 39 minutes for a table. You can do this!!
The quality of food has gone downhill. When I first started ordering from here a couple of years ago, the food was always tasty, but the last couple of times, it has been overdone. With my last order, the rice tasted burnt and the egg roll and wontons were overdone almost to the point of being burnt. When I called to complain, I was told the best that they could do was offer me a free order of wontons with my next order. Like I will ever order from here again. Ever since the Garden View restaurant closed a few years ago, it has been difficult to find a replacement. I thought I had found one, now I guess I will begin searching again.
Friendly and courteous
Food is great - but location needs updating last time we were there, there mice running around.
The special egg roll is so good!
Food was not great Slow service
Great service and lovely Canadian Chinese food. Good sized portions that were hot and fresh!
Good food, not the best looking inside but always great service.
If I could give them no stars I would. After making a 114 dollar order the food was brought cold and you could tell it was reheated and not cooked fresh. I get trying to save money with whats going on but come on. Half our food was inedible and rancid. When I took it back in the counter staff argued with me that thats the way its madecomplete waste of my time and money trying to order my daughter a meal for her 14thbirthday in all this craziness. Will never order there again and will let my military friends know to avoid this place.
HRM generally has mediocure chinese food compared to other places. Of the chinese food places I have been to here, this ranks as one of the better Ive had. My only real concern was that my egg rolls were heavily dripping in grease and the plum sauce was very runny. We also ordered chicken fried rice which had large chunks of chicken in it (well worth the price). The chicken balls, Cantonese chow mein and egg foo young were really tasty and were well made in the sense of proportions and flavour. All in all, I would definitely order from here again and recommend it to others. You can tell they are a experienced Chinese restaurant and give you good value. (this review comes from a chinese guy who comes from a restaurant family)
Very nice and good
Portland street.
Put me on hold for 30mins then told me to late to place an order.
Ive been going to this establishment before it was named Gardenview and havent had any bad experiences. Great food.
BEST Chinese food in Dartmouth
Great food, always good service too!
The food is good here. This time the egg rollls were over done.
Great food!
After standing there waiting for 3 hours they come out and tell me that my meal wasnt ready not too happy will never step foot in this place again
Really busy for new years eve, I had a big order and they were quick, food was hot and delicious. A definite must try!
Good food, a little bit pricy compared to other places I go. Plenty of variety!!
I love this place so much. They have an amazing vegetarian dish and it fills me right up. AMAZING!
We like the food and service has always been pleasant.
Consistently delicious
I love the food here. The portions are generous and the place is always kept clean. The service is fast and friendly.
Good but expensive
I had a poor service issue with the Mill Cove location about a month ago and emailed them with this information. This was never responded to so I spoke with one of the family members of the restaurant at the casino location who assured me I would be contact and again no response so I spoke to him again he brushed me off. They are very disrespectful of their staff and customers.
This place is a North American style Chinese at a fair price with friendly service. There egg rolls were excellent, definitely the best in town. Their ginger beef was satisfactory. Their chicken products were great. Their decor was dated. Overall their food was great.
Very nice place if u like Chinese food
Friendly service & good food
Good food
I made the foolish mistake of taking my girlfriend to this location. Knowing that she was a fan of Chinese and Korean cuisine I thought Id be in the safe zone. Bland generic uninspired food Not recommended at all.
Bland food, we were the only people in there to start and there was still a dirty table when we got there. Food was mostly tasteless and the waitress was so overwhelmed with all of nobody else so she couldnt come back and refill our water.
Pricey
Highly recommended spot for generous portions and great service
Always enjoy my meals
This place surprises me a bit especially for the quantity and quality of the food. North American style cooking of Chinese dish but taste good and the amount of food is overwhelming that you can bring to your work next morning. The only downside Ive received is the service. Greet the customer in a professional manner is the best way to have first impression, changing it will make your customers come back for more. Thanks
always like the beef fried rice
First time in, and was not disappointed. Food was delicious. I got a wonton soup and #9 [chicken balls, fried rice, egg roll & beef & broccoli] for take out. The lady who took our order was delightful. Very friendly, genuine and seemed to truly enjoy working there. Would definitely recommend. :)
Its a decent spot, its definitely not great but definitely not bad. Just decent, serviceable food!
Their food is usually good. Today the honey garluc ribs were chewy and the Almond chicken Soo Guy the chicken was overcooked. Disappointed this time. I will go back again as this is not quality they usually provide.
Omg one person waiting and one cook. Couldnt remember to put cutlery on the table. Wait staff was flustered and confused. My table was the only one however I think they had takeout orders. Either way. I think I could get a meal faster if I drove to Windsor, that includes driving time.
Great service. Reasonable prices. Nostalgic feel of classic Canadian Chinese restaurant.
Love their food. Interior is a little on the dark side. I usually get take out.
Great food.
Live it here
Great food. Friendly people.
I ordered take out yesterday. The egg rolls were burnt , the chop suey was terrible, the chicken dish was terrible and the beef fried rice was as dry as a bone. It was an insult t our taste buds. I will never order anything from them again. It was hood up until now...so insulted!
Yum!
Really great quantities for the price you pay and great food flavors as well
Cozy and very friendly staff.
Good food. Friendly atmosphere. Fast service.
Food was good but I was charged $2.40 for 1 can of pop which is a little outrageous ...
Best Chinese food Ive had since moving to Dartmouth. Great friendly staff awesome delivery times and the food is constantly great. Love this place.
North American style Chinese at a fair price, friendly service. They have the largest wonton soup Ive ever encountered.
Very attentive service. The staff made sure to check in several times to make sure everything was satisfactory. Portions were great, the food was delicious - and the Shirley Temple was perfect !!
Did not enjoy the food at all. The eggrolls were dry and short ribs were tough. The rest was a soggy mess.
Rebecca, our waitress, was very friendly and knowledgable. Prices were fair and food was very tasty.
Great food!
No curry in curry dish dried out food first and last time
Great food, best egg rolls in town, the decor is dated. Booths are a tight fit for some.
Good food and service.
Food is hot and well displayed when it arrives at your table. Prices are comparable. Friendly staff
the service was really good and they kept frequently checking to make sure we were still good and didnt want anything else. the prices are probably mid tier as far as Chinese food restaurants go in the region. there are cheaper, but those places are also lesser in quality. the food was very good. we had the meal for 5 off the menu. the fault I would say was the ribs, they were incredibly dry and the flavour wasnt great.
Food is just ok. The smallest soup is quite big!
Wasn t the best got beef instead of chicken in chicken fried rice wongtong soup has weird noodles and are not cooked enough and taste gross
Best Chinese food in Dartmouth! Plus the service is amazing! Definitely a must visit.
While the service was good, the food was lacking. I ordered the Singapore noodles and they were heavy on salt and light on essential flavors.
May garden never disappoints. Great everytime.
This is our go to spot for Chinese food. Always delicious and amazing eggrolls. However this time the service was horrible. We were told 15 minutes when we called in our takeout order, but we showed up and waited, and waited. Finally receiving our order 50 minutes after we called it in. The employee made multiple excuses and did not even apologize. The employee also continues to tell any wall in traffic or phone orders it would be a 15 minute turnaround. Disappointed this time, but good was still delicious.
Egg rolls were awesome and the combination plates had a ton of food for like $13. One of the better Canadian Chinese food places around.
Good food
Typical Canadian Chinese food
Okay service, didn t ask how the food was before bringing me my bill halfway through my meal. Drink was gone and didn t ask if I wanted another. Food was better than expected actually besides the eggrolls. I haven t had a good one since being in Nova Scotia. I m beginning to think they re just different here. Over all not the greatest being as I was the only one in the restaurant.
Time and time again I have enjoyed the friendly service and great food at May Garden on Portland street.
Great place
Odd discovery, thanks to eating with a picky 2 year old: possibly the best fries in town.
Awesome
Great tastey food and wonderful service.
I have been going to this restaurant for many years. It is by far the best Chinese food in Dartmouth, actually the best I have found in all of HRM. The staff are always friendly and very efficient. I highly recommend giving it a try...you will go back again and again
Really nice fresh vegetables cooked perfectly. Great service
The food is great but not sure why they use egg roll skins instead of wonton wrappers for their wonton soup...they would be more cost effective too
