Modern Orchid Southeast Asian Cuisine in Dartmouth

Let me down tonight.....horrible service, not busy at all and server head down behind cash half hour....had to get my own napkins, and moments later again to go up to ask for more water. Food was tasteless, the rice was definitely 100% reheated/microwaved...OMG!! thats so bad Modern Orchid. Never dining in this place again, DONE!

For our Holiday Party, our non-profit organization chose to get together at an activity center in Dartmouth Crossing. We also wanted to book a restaurant, reasonably priced, that could accommodate 30 of us in such a way as to make us feel like a team and together. Modern Orchid fit the bill. They not only fit the bill but exceeded our expectations. They accommodated us when we needed to split the group into two over two different dates. They welcomed us with smiles and warmth as we poured in to take our seats. The food was amazing - fresh ingredients and lovely presentation. I highly recommend it and many of us will be returning with our families. Mannat and Xing (my apologies if I have spelled your names incorrectly) made sure that we were enjoying ourselves and we had everything we may need. If you havent considered Modern Orchid Dartmouth in the past, try then try it out. Bring your family. Bring your co-workers. Plan a party. You wont be disappointed.

Great place to eat super food

Big attitude from one of the staff not from all but one and don t even smile or don t even let us finish our meal and food was amazing and when ever we come all the staff are nice but this girl need customer experience training treat everyone equally I find that too only to us she did that and I am a traveller food explorer so this was a bad experience for us only by 1 staff I say not from all

They will humiliate you if you dont give TIPS even if there is kids in the table .. i will never comeback in this restaurant although food is great..

I avoided this place for years after eating it right after a traumatic experience but boy, has it been a treat to return. The food is amazing and they have a special place in my heart for providing comfort in what was such a hard time. Thank you modern orchid!

Mandat was an amazing server. The food was delicious with 0 complaints. Came out hot and fresh. Definitely recommend. Kid-friendliness: So nice, gave us a complementary ice cream for the kids.

Ive never had better chinese food than here. Weve been trying a few local places we used to like back in the day but the quality just hasnt been the greatest lately. The modern orchid is a refreshing exception to this trend and I couldnt have been more satisfied I dont think. We got the combination c9 I believe which has sweet n sour chicken balls, beef and broccoli, chicken fried rice and egg roll, and everything was fresh, crispy, hot and delicious. They also have Thai food from what I could see and Im definitely looking forward to trying some more items on the menu.

The best southeast Asian food we have had in a long time! The coconut veg curry was outstanding, and the singapore noodles were incredible!! The hot and sour soup is the best! The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this restaurant!!

The utensils and dishware were ice cold. My coffee went cold right away, and so did my food.

We went to Modern Orchid for my daughter s birthday and the food was very good, plentiful and hot. The staff was excellent, prompt and very helpful. They made our supper very special. Our waitress Mannatt was exceptional! She went the extra mile to make our dinner very enjoyable. Dietary restrictions: Two of our group are celiac. They were very helpful with explaining the menu and suggesting dishes that would accommodate their food restrictions.

I sat down when I walked in at the first table I saw. The waitress asked how many people I had in my party. I said it was only me. I sat down already and then she asked me to move to another table because it was only me. Then another customer came in and sat in the same exact spot I was in and the waitress accommodated him by moving the tables around. I went to the restroom and when I came back the door dash guy threw his bag on my seat right in front of me so I couldnt sit down and the waitress didnt care. The food was okay but the service was poor. I really dont want to come back. You have to accommodate your customers better.

The food is always great, however I was a little disappointed with the lack of information on meals. I ordered a Cashew Nut Chicken dish with a spring roll. I was charged $15.95 for the dish plus $1.95 for the spring roll. Didnt realize until looking back at the menu afterwards that they have a combo for a dish which includes a springroll and rice for just $16.95. A little let down that the combo was not suggested as the regular dish didnt include rice, and why wouldnt you want the combo with rice for practically the same price as ordering a fish and spring roll separate!

The walls were dirty, the tables were stained. The food wasn t up to par of the star rating that it was saying. THE only good thing was the egg rolls. Save your money when coming here. The server didn t offer us drinks till we asked for them, didn t bring out the food all out at once, kept us waiting till we all had our food. She didn t offer us the specials that were posted. Just wanted to take out order then leave.

Im a Delivery Driver and their service is so unacceptably slow! Ive had to wait over 20 minutes PAST the latest time and they STILL have not prepared an order that I was Told was ready, 20 minutes ago. Ive now Lost half an hour of income and lost new income earnings for my wait. This merchant has cost me considerable amount of money today and dont seem at all to care.

BEDFORD LOCATION: After trying SO many Chinese restaurants in & around the HRM, we finally found our spot!! Incredible value, amazing portion sizes, and just so incredibly delicious. Dinner for 3B, and we couldn t believe how much came with the order!

I like this restaurant very much The biggest surprise for me are they do have vege spring rolls and meat one. I order them every time I come here. Hope the restaurant gets better and better!!

Order one thing got another called to see if they would fix it. She told me I order wrong and hung up on me. Went up with receipts and she said oh I got disconnected. Said they remade my food but they just through it back in the pan, came out burnt and dry.. used to be the best place in Dartmouth Crossing now they have poor service and worse food

we went here on a Friday night a 7pm and we were the only ones here which should have been our first hint. we ordered shrimp tempura, ginger beef, chow main noodles, salt and pepper crispy squid.and steamed rice. The shrimp tempura came with a sirracha mayo dip, there was 10 of them they were ok but a bit greasy. The chowmein noodles were over cooked and a bit nasty, the veggies and meat on top were ok but also way over cooked, veggies should have a bit of crunch and not be mushy I got a feeling the veggies maybe have been cooked already and fried again for this dish. The salt and pepper crispy squid was soft and mushy, you could tell it was coated in way to.much corn starch before the batter was applied as it left a nasty raw starch taste in your mouth. This has some type of veggie salsa on top which was actually extremely good. The ginger beef made me cry as its my favorite dish this was like eating an old boot, tough and gross, it sat in my stomach like a rock. if you use cheap meat marinade it in some baking soda first so the meat will relax when cooked and nit tighten up. The steamed rice never came. The staff was nice enough, but they stood there watching us but never once asked if we wanted drink refills. my glass was empty for 15 mins till I asked for more water. again we were the only ones there so it should not have happen we did not take the leftovers and we both felt gross after we left. I would not go back

This is the best restaurant I tried in Dartmouth Crossing! Will also be my first choice whenever I shopping there. The Thai food is so yummy and serving fast! The service is warm hearted and is a kids friendly restaurant. Highly recommend the Sweet and Sour soup and the Singapore Noodles which are my favourite!

Overall a great, fresh-tasting meal! I ordered through skip the dishes and got the chicken lettuce wraps, a veggie spring roll, and a pork spring roll to try. The lettuce wraps were absolutely delicious and made a perfect lunch, but the filling was really liquidy so they were definitely messy to eat. The spring rolls were great as well- I would recommend the meat spring roll! The veggie spring roll was a little lacking in crunch and flavour but still nice. The sweet and sour sauce is yummy as well. I will definitely eat here again!

I went to Modern Orchid because my friend recommended it, and Im so glad she did! The cashew nut chicken was amazing, and it came with a perfect little spring roll and perfectly cooked rice. There was a bit of zip to the chicken and vegetables, but not too much that I couldnt enjoy the flavours. After my meal, they brought me a nice little bowl of chocolate ice cream, free of charge. 5/5 recommend.

Best Asian food Ive had in a long time. Ordered the Dinner for Two (B) and every dish was amazing. The flavors were wonderful, it was much better than any other Asian restaurant Ive been to recently. Wonton soup alone is worth coming back for. Servings were huge too. The service was great, staff were very friendly and quick to refill waters. Doesnt look like much from the outside, but once inside it has lots of traditional Asian art and decor. The fish tank was clean and not overstocked, which is great to see. The music was in Chinese (I think) which is another nice atmospheric touch. Parking: Lots of free parking right outside the door. Wheelchair accessibility: Second door is not automatic, and the entrance may be difficult to maneuver. Once inside the restaurant there is plenty of space between tables for wheelchairs.

Must say again that this is the Absolute Best Chinese place in Nova Scotia. Food is great. Service is great

I waited an hour and a half for my food that was promised in 45 mins. We received mush filled curry rolls instead of egg rolls. I was then told that thats what eggrolls are. With curry. But all of their food has curry listed when its a curry food. Egg rolls are eggrolls. Theres no curry in them. I was digusted by eating something that had curry in it when I didnt order it. What if I had an allergy to curry? I wouldve been screwed. Dont order here. They said the only thing they would do is refund me the four rolls next time I was in the restaurant. Well, for someone who doesnt drive, thatll be impossible. This is called theft. I paid for something and it was something else entirely. EGG ROLLS DO NOT HAVE CURRY inside of them. They are not mush on the inside either. Egg rolls are spring rolls with a bit of meat inside, crunchy cabbage, etc. Gross.

Chow mein was great, chicken balls were great, ribs were great. Service sucks ....dont ask for the double happiness (shrimp stirfry) it smells like urine. When we told her it smelled bad and tasted the same she said its cause you dont like. I said it dont specify what you use for broth, it smells like urine. We cant eat it or even smell it. She charged for it anyway. Asked for a pop at beginning of order, no pop was brought and still charged for it. I wont be back. Too bad all because she refused to offer a replacement.

Three of us dined in, 2 had the Red Chicken Curry and the other Yellow Chicken Curry. Worst curry I have ever eaten, all 3 of us had a whole bowl of mostly ONIONS. Hay, I don t mind some onions but our bowls were ridiculously filled with onions. We couldn t find the chicken, hardly any in our dishes. I was so disappointed. When the bill came we told the waitress, she said she will mention this to the chef and wanted a mandatory 15% tip because there were 6 at our table. What a nutty place, never go there, not worth the disappointment. Terrible food.

The service was excellent! The food was just ok. We didn t find the authentic taste and ingredients of Asian dishes we re accustomed to or seeking for when going to Asian restaurants.

High quality Chinese food. Friendly staff. Simple atmosphere with many tables and seating for maybe 70? Competitive prices. I ate in here for a weekday lunch in probably 2021 one day and didnt review it at the time, so am going on vague memories. Today, Sept 2023: ordered via Skip the Dishes and am very happy with my order. The won tons are a bit softer than Im used to, which comes across as fresher or not in the fryer as long? Buy still crispy enough, with a noticeable chunk of pork, decent sweet & sour sauce on the side. The combo meal with fried rice and sweet & sour chicken balls is very good for flavor, portion, quality. The Lo Mein noodles (veg) I requested as extra spicy, and it is spicy, but not as hot as it could be. Bits of broccoli, cabbage, onion, overall good flavor. I definitely want to try many more items on this menu!

New owners or new cook, or both. If you are expecting the same quality and taste you will be disappointed. This was our favorite Chinese restaurant but wont be back.

We were craving some Chinese takeout today and Modern Orchid popped up on my google search. I was surprised - I used to work in their neighborhood and only remember enjoying their delicious southeast Asian food. But after today s experience they ll be the first place I think of for Chinese! The order was ready fast, the service was excellent, and clear COVID protocols greeted me at the door. The food really satisfied! We enjoyed piping hot Chinese takeout without a hint of greasiness. The portions were generous and the price was great. Modern Orchid is our new go-to place for Chinese takeout. :)

This is another great chinese restaurant in Dartmouth. staff is warm welcoming and friendly. cuisine tastes nicely, dishes are value money. Highly recommend the Singapore fried noodle and beef rice noodle.

Ive been here numerous times and it is by far the best Asian restaurant I have ever been to in Nova Scotia. The surroundings are modern, elegant, service was fast, waitresses pleasant, food beautifully presented and tastes divine! I had the crispy spicy beef combo which came with soup, a spring roll, rice and beef with crispy noodles and vegetables. It was the perfect amount of food and I literally wanted to lick my plate it was so tasty. Dining in is slightly better than take out. Wish Id taken some photos.

I tried the takeout, the portions are small compared to other similar restaurants in the area. Try Jean s Chinese in Halifax, same price for double the food.

Pleasant atmosphere. Service was a little slow, however we were a group of 10. Food didnt arrive at the same time. Some of the flavours were unusual, such as curry in the egg rolls, and a few other spices I didnt recognize. Vegetables were fresh and crisp, maybe a bit heavy on the use of onion. Cost compared to portion size was excellent. For groups of 6 or more, be prepared for automatic gratuity on the bill.

Ive eaten at Modern Orchid a good number of times now, service is always quick, and all of the options I have tried have been delicious, well cooked, and very flavorful. Very reasonable prices for the amount of food and quality.

I ordered the Mu Shu Pork Crepes as take out. The meat in this dish is so little, one needs a magnifying glass or a microscope to find it. I bet it was maximum 3-5% meat content. I could have given 0 star if I could. Extremely rude staff. She became rude for asking the content in the egg rolls. Everything in the menu mentioned the contents except the egg roll and I was allergic to meat. She just started being rude as I mentioned I am allergic and took a bite accidentally. I did not even change the tone of my voice when she started arguing and asking us to stop talking. My friends were dumbstruck as she just kept raising her voice on us. This my first time I am seeing a Karen being a server. Now we know the reason why this restaurant is always empty. All the three of us used to work in restaurants and we would never disrespect a customer for no reason. All on the top of the fact that it is complete trashy food. We did not even complained that they forgot one of our orders. So please dont go to this place if you are hungry and looking for a nice place to eat out with your loved ones.

Mango salad had wonderful ingredients but was drowned in a pinkish dressing and too much sugar. My Ginger Chicken was delicious. My son found his stirfry soaked in reddish pink sugary sauce. We spoke to the wacit staff about Our concerns but she dic not appear to understand. Place was clean and pleadant.

Please be advised I have not eaten pork in over 15yrs, I ordered a spring roll with my meal, ate half if it before I saw meat in it! I was so sick at the sight of it, I was informed by my waitress I had to specify a vegetable spring roll ! Like what ! Most assume a spring roll is all veg esp when my husband ordered an egg roll which was meat! Will not return

Recently ordered takeout and ordered a few dishes (lemon chicken, ginger beef, chicken fried rice and cashew vegetable). The ginger beef was dry and sawdust like texture and flavor. We didnt eat it. The chicken fried rice was good. Lemon chicken was also old and dry texture. The service was very friendly, but overall the food was not worth eating unfortunately. I would not recommend ordering food from here unless they change their quality.

The Modern Orchid is the chienese food that is actually prepared fresh . Highly recommend this place for those whom wish to set the bar for what great chienese food should be . Thank you Mordern Orchid I can now enjoy chienese food again .

The food is really bland and flavorless, the rice is super dry, and the sweet and sour sauce or whatever you want to call it doesnt taste right. Have you ever heard of salt? Will not eat their food again

Food was good, however on our second visit the appetizers and mains were pushed on us straight away leaving no room at the table. Also my main was the wrong dish, it was supposed to be on a bed of puffed rice, however sadly lacking, took a good few minutes to get sorted by which time my food was cooling down a little too much. Disappointing.

Likely one of the worst chinese meals weve ever had. The order came with sauce dripping from the paper bag. Egg roll was curry. Yuk! Sweet and sour chicken was 90 %batter. The chicken fried rice tasted like I walked into a barn of pigs. I m sorry but I don t recommend this place for the rice at all.

I have been going here for years. The Thai food is usually very good but the last few times no so much. I dont know what has changed but the sauces lack flavor. We got the spicy crispy beef and there was hardly any sauce and the dish was more undercooked onions than it was beef.

Ordered pick up via Uber as I wanted to try some of their appetizers/dessert, and I was near the neighbourhood picking up pizza for dinner. Placed my order at 5:10pm, the app told me an estimated pick up time of 6:22pm.... When the app changed and said it was ready, I walked in, and other customers were being told to wait 15 mins as no food was ready yet, I was told the same, so I waited in the car for another 15 mins.. I go back in, and Im told another 10 mins... Considering I had ordered more simple items so I figured my uber order may have been missed, I didnt think it would take this long. They seemed overwhelmed in the back, so they mustve been super behind, and if I had know it would take almost 2 hrs to get my items, I probably wouldnt have ordered in the first place... Finally got my food, and it was still warm once I got home, the egg roll does have some curry in it as others reviewers noted, but we enjoyed it.The spring roll was okay - not overly exciting, but the sesame balls and fried coconut milk was very tasty. Wasnt a huge fan of the mango salad, not a lot of seasoning, and the tomatoes kind of threw me off, I have tasted better mango salad at other places within HRM. Overall, not my first choice, but havent tried any main dishes yet so cant really judge.

Best Asian food Ive had in the HRM, and they have absolutely wonderful service. Unfortunately only discovered this place during COVID, but I cant wait to dine in and enjoy their atmosphere sometime!

Delicious meal, quick service, friendly staff and excellent prices. Their ginger beef combo was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavorful without being overwhelming, above-average meat to veggie ratio, very generous portions, and for only a couple extra dollars over the fast food joints nearby. I placed a takeout order in the parking lot and it was ready in 5 minutes. Staff were friendly and quick, and they have tap, which made life very easy. Nothing to complain about and lots of dishes to enjoy.

Old mushy rice, sauce spilled and leaking from the soggy paper bag, egg roll was not only cold but just tasted old. Probably the worst chinese food I have eaten. On the plus size the portions were generous. Just a shame it was overcooked and cold.

Modern Orchid is a nice little restaurant tucked in the Village shopping area at Dartmouth Crossing. The food is very good, as is the service, and the quiet atmosphere. If youre looking for a low-key, relaxing meal of Asian cuisine, this place is perfect.

It had been over a year since I was able to get back and eat here. My favorite dish is the spicy crispy beef. They did not disappoint! It was just as I remembered. So good! The entire family enjoyed the meal. Thank you and keep making delicious food.

Remember how Chinese food tasted when you were a kid? It tastes like that again when you come here Edit: was a 5 star. New chef or ownership or something unfortunate. Quality had nosedived. Extremely disappointed that my original review is simply inaccurate now.

I feel like since the pandemic, this place isnt as good as it used to be. We got food from here a year ago and it wasnt the best. I figured it was a one off. We got it again today and it was the same. Rice is different from a few years ago, used to have this smokey kinda flavour. Now just kinda meh. Rice was a bit under cooked. Chicken balls had batter that was not fully fried and they were very greasy. My wife and I got different egg rolls even though they should have been the same. Still the same curry flavouring, but the filling in mine was kinda like a spring roll and hers was the normal mushy filling. Both were really greasy as well. They have new take out containers that seperate the items. The rice portion is about half of what it used to be. Im bummed out because this used to be our go-to, but sadly not any more

I am not sure what changed but food was awful...thry brought me my food it was barley warm...my husbands food came later...instead of together ..we were out for dinner together ...i have been there lots of times...not sure why this time was so bad

Well no restaurant is always good but we tried takeout here yesterday (Sunday) and the 3 meals we left with were so dry and they missed the gravy for 1meal. Not something I could eat and since they knowingly let it be served to us tells me they dont care enough to even own this business. Money is hard earned and when spent on food I expect reasonable value, I was ripped off and still hungry

I have travelled through thailand, japan, and South Korea, not only is the food quality amazing the presentation is traditional as well. I highly recommend this place for authentic southeast Asian cuisine.

Modern Orchid has its pros and cons. Prices were good, taste wise was okay, but can definitely improve. Understandable considering the demographic of Dartmouth, but a little disappointing. Still good tasting however. Authenticity wise, food was subpar. You can tell what curry paste the chef used, many places use it. Growing up south East Asian, I ate curry every other week. Not to compare with homecooked meals, but compared to the food made in Thailand, you can tell the difference right away. Mango salad wasnt close to the real thing, and spring roll was like a spring roll you get at Manchu wok. Atmosphere was nice, clean, but also feels like its trying to be too fancy for its prices. It feels less welcoming, despite the great prices. Service wise was great, Amanda was helping and not pushy. She knew when to approach and when to let you eat. It was a short wait for our meal, it was delicious, with kind and friendly service, the Restaurant was very clean.

Waited an hour for our order, 3 other tables left as well. VERY poor service today

Highly recommend. Service is efficient and friendly and they re always willing to make substitutions/ follow any special requests. Experience is consistently awesome. Food tastes great and is well priced! Their curry egg rolls are my favourite!

Modern Orchid is Amazing!!! I tried their mango salad and BBQ pork for lunch and it was some of the freshest and tastiest food I have ever had. Highly recommend. Server was very nice and I didnt have to wait long to be served.

First visit great sweet and sour chicken balls and sauce. Good chicken chow mein cooked properly not soggy. Almond guy ding very garlicky but not on each bite not the best Ive had . Reduced stars as the chicken fried rice, very dry almost not fresh and it had peas, corn, carrots and green beans, a frozen vegetable mix i believe. No shallots or egg that I could see. The pairing of the curry eggroll does not in my opinion go with the dishes. The taste is not right, however I will give credit it was crispy and cooked proper. Decent amount of food for price point but frozen additions rice takes away authenticity.
