I'm very familiar with Salty's Fish and Chips on the Mainland. This location in Duncan didn't disappoint. The food and service was excellent! I had 1 piece cod and chips, it was quickly ready not long after we ordered. The fish and chips were piping hot! Once it cool down was so tasty as I remembered it! Highly recommend this place. Parking out front of the restaurant. Take out available as well.
Worth every penny. Had the Alaskan Habilbut. 10 on 10. I'm not a big fan of fries, but these were real potatoes and delicious. Will go again. Great service and cozy atmosphere.
I am sitting here by the till, listening to the crew working. I already knew I would love the food, but I was always served by older people when I would come here I thought. It's all very young people so I was surprised but more than willing to give then a fair shake. Well, this crew is so good that I'm posting a review. They are so friendly and informative with every elderly costumer that comes in. I'm so impressed with this service. 6 stars out of 5. Looking forward to next year's visit.
Great food. The chips are made here. Soft fresh. And the halibut is light fluffy and not dry. I had 2 piece halibut fries and an Iced tea. Stop by for a great halibut lunch
Was craving for a good piece of fish. This place is great. I didn’t expect the clam chowder to be so good and the fish sure satisfied my cravings.
Best decision I made trying to find a place for lunch. The guys working there were amazing, great service. The halibut was flaky, soft, lightly buttered, delicious. The shrimp and prawns perfectly cooked. 5 starts every single time.
We passed by Ducan in our trip and stay here for lunch. We had the lunch specials of cod and fried shrimps which are awesomely prepared. The cod are juicy and fresh to a right degree . With the Piper's Pale Ale, the combination was just wonderful. And good priced as well. Recommend ;)
Update: Since the original review. We ate here a few times since as our food stop to and from Victoria. The prices has gone up since but not surprising with the inflation issues of 2022. However it's still great fish and chips even without the ayce Tuesday. I recommend going for the halibut it's worth the extra money. The tarter sauce issue I had with them on my original review is not an issue now. It seems like it might of been that day but since I like the tarter sauce. Original review: We came on Tuesday for the all you can eat for $16, but due to Covid-19 it's not offered. We decided to still give them a try. My wife ordered the West Coast Bisque (Mix seafood thick soup) $4.5 and British Traditional (2 Hadcod, Panko Shrimp, slaw and chips) $22.75. I ordered the 2 pieces Cod, slaw and chips $17.75. The Bisque was pack full of seafood and flavor in a small bowl. It came out piping hot and we really enjoyed it. The British Traditional is basically 2 pieces Hadcod, slaw and chips plus $4 for Panko Shrimp. Definitely worth the extra $4 if you are hungry because they give a good amount of it. Panko Shrimp is was good along with the slaw. Both fish had great meat size, lightly batter and oil was fresh. The two thing we didn't like much was the chips and tartar sauce. The fries lacked a bit of flavor. However I believe you can substitute for onion rings or more slaw as the other tables did that. The tartar sauce was not the best I had. The sauce is the 2nd most important thing! Which is what kept me from giving it 5 stars. If you are undecided between the two fish. Me and my wife think it's worth the extra $1 for the Hadcod. It had a lighter and less fishy taste vs Cod. Halibut the best, but also comes with a high price, but Hadcod is a nice balance of quality and value. Stay away from Pollock if you see it offered. Service was quick and friendly. I am glad we tried them out and hope they bring back the Tuesday all you can eat for $16, but I doubt I can eat more than 2-3 pieces of Cod!
Excellent food and staff.
Stopped in for the first time. I think this will be a new fav stop on our drive from mid-island to Victoria.
The food was absolutely wonderful, filling and I want to go back for one more meal before I leave this week.
Quite possibly the best halibut Ive ever had. Very, very good!
Delightful local family-run shop, perfect every time!
Stopped in en route to parksville..Take out! Superb in every way . Portion, freshness ,staff, I was born and raised in West London England,so I know of which I speak. Pls open a Saltys In Parksville
Best halibut and chips I have ever had!!
I thought I would check out Saltys as I m visiting from Toronto. I thought my neighbourhood fish and chip place was good..but Saltys blew it out of the water. WOW so much better. Amazing food and great customer service.
This place was simple and delivered as promised. Fresh, hot, perfectly fried fish and chips. Prices are excellent for portion and quality! Would definitely go back. (Note to management: when the cooks yell at the servers, the entire tiny restaurant hears it. Not a great practice.)
Ordered takeout tonight and maybe they were having an off night but they forgot our coleslaw. The portion of the fries was half of what we normally receive and the halibut was tough and chewy. Very disappointing.
Beautiful halibut loved every bite. Well cooked and so tasty. Wish we had this fish in Australia
The food is consistently excellent. No other restaurant can compete.
Friendly service and great food
I had the Halibut and chips and they were superb! They server was very friendly. I will be going back soon. (Been back numerous times since this review and they never disappoint.)
Fish batter is light and tasty. Tartar sauce was on point. Coleslaw was perfect. Service was quick and excellent! Id go out of my way to come here again.
The fish was nice and crispy and the service was very good. I would definitely recommend going here for your fish and chips.
WARNING- do not expect to be served in order of arrival. We left prior to ordering food after getting drinks. The server took order from table that arrived some time after us. Plus a general bad atmosphere of employees that serve the regulars first . Recommend avoiding this place
Great food. Awesome service!
Friendly fast and delish.
Excellent in every way. If you are looking for fish and chips on the island - this is the place.
It was alright I got a big stomach storm from the food yuck Kid-friendliness: Good Wheelchair accessibility: Great
Delicious fish and chips!
Always a good stop for seafood
Yummy Fish and Chips. The girls were so nice. Busy place.
Awesome Halibut fish and chips!!!
Always delicious food! Friendly staff and lovely decor for a fish and chips place. If any drawback its the size and sometimes lack of tables. But thats minor compared to the food. And always have some little deal going on so it feels like an affordable place.
We want this to be our favourite fish and chips place, but unfortunately our experience has been mixed. On too many occasions the French fries have been soggy and obviously refried. This would be a simple and cheap fix, and would serve to make us faithful customers.
We had the cod and chips - the chips were fantastic and the fish was hot and crispy.
The halibut was cut thick but the lieces were small, so the fish was perfectly done, moist, but the price was high fkr a 4 oz piece of fish and a hamdful of fries. Food
Best fish and chips i ve ever had and it s not close.
Fish is great, crispy and the pieces are perfect sized. One of our favourite places to get battered fish. But the fries. They are the worst around. They look old and look to be refried, but not refried in a crispy way. They are definitely not fresh how ever they are done.
While passing through town we were on the hunt for a lunch of fish and chips. We spotted Saltys while on the highway going through Duncan and decided to stop for lunch. My partner and I ordered the jumbo tiger prawns, the chowder bisque, and the 8 OZ halibut from the captains table dish. First after initially only ordering one chowder we immediately ordered a second, what a treat the tomato based broth and heaping amount of seafood was a great treat, next the tiger prawns arrived, not to bad the light batter and cocktail sauce went well together, finally the main entrée arrived, the basket of shrimp scallops and oysters went well with the chowder, the halibut was nicely battered definitely not over done and paired incredibly well with the house made tartar sauce, definitely glad we stopped here for lunch, would for sure stop here again just for the chowder
Brilliant food. Quite expensive but quite nice. $50 for halibut lunch for two. Nice crisp and light batter. Staff is pleasant. Their takeout and Doordash service is also solid. Food Quality: 5/5 Cleanliness/Ambience: 4/5 Value: 3/5 Speed: 4/5
We found the Duncan location last year and Im soooo happy we did. All the food we order is terrific, always hot and fresh and the staff are great. Highly recommend. We even drive from Ladysmith!!. The only thing I am missing is the buttered bread for a chip butty lol.
Oh wow Salty s was great, I ll be back. We had the 10 piece group meal and it was perfect (there were 8 people) Not too oily, not too much batter and the tater sauce is perfect. (wish we got more!)
Staff excellent. Friendly atmosphere. Food was great and was plentiful.
Got the halibut and chips. Price was actually really good. Batter on the fish was excellent only lacking some seasoning but otherwise was excellent. Fries were fries. Poutine was good. Place was full so thats a good sign. Got take out and it was ready on time and hot. Id definitely go back to check out the rest of the menu.
Great good. Best music you could ask for. Friendly staff. We re so glad we stopped in for a bite. You should too.
Best fish and chips any where This place is legit
Best fish and chips ever!
Fast & friendly, shared the 2 piece cod fish & chips. Portions are large. Will definitely be back
Halibut Fish n Chips. Just sayin.
Fish & chips
Light crispy batter, Very fresh!
The food was basic but nevertheless good and the people were kind. The atmosphere was comfortable and the space was well decorated. A great place to stop by and have lunch.
Despite not having anything gluten friendly, I happily eat there when I can. So good.
Stopped on a road trip up from Victoria. Everything was quite good but the chips were a bit of a letdown. Still would recommend overall for a road trip as it is right next to the highway.
Good Fish and chips Mom and Pop restaurant.
Great, UK style fish and chips. Yes, Im speaking from personal experience traveling in the UK. We tried Halibut and Cod - both were fresh, tasty, and not too greasy (the common failing of sub-par Fish and Chips). Mushy peas! Chip portions were generous. Recommended, on the hwy in Duncan, good parking.
Nothing fancy, just good hot food served quickly by friendly staff.
Great food
Yum, best halibut and chips in town, super consistent quality!
Absolutely the best fish and chips in B.C. I ordered the Northener and my hubby order 2 pieces of Cod and chips. Wowser, we love their food. And our waitress was so nice and helpful and upbeat/cheery.
Excellent, authentic English Fish and Chips. The service was very good and fast. Decent prices
I didn t eat in, the food was great, service good to. Parking: Parking is easy Food : 5/5 |
Good fish and chips.
I had the two piece cod with sweet potato fries. The portions were massive and it was delicious. The fish had the perfect amount of batter and was cooked perfectly. I would definitely recommend.
Great
great value for food. Sumptuous and delicious. A little bit of branding through cutlery and food boxes will not hurt, though. Great service
Made me feel comfortable, thanks guys !
GREAT SERVICE GREAT TASTE
Missing lemons w/ the fish n chips other then that, it was delicious
Top notch place for fish and chips. All of the meal was delicious, fair pricing and great service. Best on the island.
Great fish and chips
Great fries, great price.
Great food. Good prices. Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Never a disappointment.
This was some of the BEST halibut I ve had. We all raved it! Will definitely keep ordering from them.
I was delighted and surprised by the excellent order of fish& chips I had here. The batter was light and crisp accompanied with an ample serving of fries! Perfectly cooked Halibut was tender and moist. The the service was quick, fast and efficient. Absolutely nothing to complain about. I would certainly come back in a flash! It was a tad expensive, but you get you pay for!...thumbs up
Can never get enough
Was amazing great fish and chips
Really really busy Both eating in eating out The gal who was working at the front counter was very friendly and treated everybody as an individual Efficient chips really good fish the chips were rather soggy On the takeout but everything else was top notch a busy little Treasure here in Duncan
Fish and chips were excellent
Great fish and chips. Great staff. Great specials. Small place but people move in and out fast.
Stopped in for lunch two days ago. Had the cod and chips as well as the shrimp, scallops and oysters from the captains table menu. Very impressed. Best fish and chips I ve had on the island. Light batter, tasty fish, not greasy. Seem to care about there customers, asked you if you enjoyed your meal. What a concept! Staff were happy . Keep it up!
Stopped in to get a couple orders of scallops and appetizers for my steaks and I was doing at home was fantastic
Excellent fish dinners.. have had halibut and cod and both great. Lots of fries done perfect. A little pricey but thats everything now.
Great food. Great prices. always great service. A must stop on your way up or down island. PS best fries/ chips on the island. Pro tip* ask for the curry gravy on the side. Youll never want plain fish and chips again... Worth the drive.
Amazing place great service awesome waitress food is excellent..
Best fish and chips on the Island!
Halibut was a touch on the dry side.
Best fish n chips in the area.
Always good always perfectly cooked.
Definitely not what the Brits would eat. Overcooked tasteless fish a fries as bad as they could be. Im sure the fried jumped out if the fryer hoping to escape. Someone should teach them how to cook.
I was passing through on my way to Victoria and pulled a hard U-turn when I saw the sign for authentic English style fish and chips. Omgoodness. So so so good. I had the mushy peas and 2 piece cod and chips. So fresh it tasted like they caught it from the ocean and put it on my plate. Great serving. I took half home and will have another full meal. I highly recommend and the girls were so friendly!!! My ONLY complaint is that the ketchup wasn t Heinz. I wouldn t lose a single star over it though.
Simple restaurant with great food and service
Omg the best fish and chippie joint in the area, the food and service will blow you away.
We are from the Atlantic Coast and this place has very good fish and chips. We had haddock, scallops and prawns, all perfectly done and very tasty. The fries are great, which is honestly a rare find together with great seafood. Vegetarian options: Pescatarian or
Waited 45 minutes for food. Finally asked the girl at the counter where it was and not a single member of the staff had any idea. Got my money back and left. What a waste of time and barely an apology from them.
The waiter who served our table was probably new to the job. There were only 2 tables and he got our orders mixed up. The fries and oysters were a bit overdone. Fish was alright.
Quality fish and chips.
Took some guys from our crew there for supper, the service was great, the food was awesome, nothing to say other than go and enjoy. VERY friendly staff, great atmosphere and will definitely return for more!!!!
Yummy yummy to my tummy
Good fish and chips but not great. A bit overdone on our most recent visit.
Never disappointed - food always good and served hot, generous portions. Friendly staff.
Great energetic smiling staff taking time to chat and make you feel at home. Just right proportions of fish, chips, great coleslaw all fresh and hot.
All Saltys are great!
Clean environment, fast friendly service and great (Manhatten!) fish chowder and excellant fish and chips (we had halibut which was perfectly lightly battered). And, all this at a reasonable price.
Always good! Great staff
Fish and chips were delicious and a good size portion. Strongly recommend
Best place to get fish and chips in duncan
Parking: Great location and awesome staff along with tasty fish
Excellent food, the fish and panko shrimp are great. Friendly staff. Chicken tenders are excellent too
We had cod, halibut and chips and coleslaw. Sadly all of it was very bland and oily. I mean there was no seasoning at all not even salt. The only possible way to enjoy it was smothering everything in ketchup, even then you could feel the overwhelming taste of oil. Fish itself was ok but again, no seasoning at all. On the bright side service was very nice, the girl at the counter was very pleasant. Overall I would say not worth it for the money you spend, this kind of quality would be acceptable at half of the price. Parking: Parking right next to the place
Epic food. End of story
Delicious and fresh everytime
Amazing fish, chips a bit bland but when dipping in house made tartar it is amazing. Good prices and 3 types of fish to choose from. Light crispy batter and great tartar sauce again
Drove for 20 minutes in driving rain and wind last night to pick up an order of Haddock & Chips at Saltys in Duncan last night. Have always wanted to try them so last night was the night. The Haddock was delicious, so much like the much pricier Halibut, dense white flesh, different from Cod, which is what we usually get. The portions (we got 3) were generous and the order of large fries was huge. Crispy batter on the fish. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was the tartar sauce. They use a pre-packaged tarter sauce, in little packets, that was thick and bland and sweet. Really disappointing. So if you provide your own tartar sauce then a Saltys Fish & Chips meal is a winner. The staff was friendly, upbeat and very helpful.
They have the best fries!
Delicious
Crispy
Great service and product
The same great crispy halibut every time! And love the fresh coleslaw! Safety protocols in place and open for dining in at the time of our visit. Yummy...as usual!
Delicious fish & chips!
Fresh, delicious and authentic British-style fish and chips - AMAZING!
Was hoping for some traditional crispy tender British fish and chips.. Instead we got rubbery fish and softy mushy batter. Dont waste your hard earned money here.
Best piece of fried halibut fish Ive ever had
After the young girl got my order wrong They basically blamed me Wow Horrible customer service Talked to owner He offered no compensation Won t be back You guys need to do better
I loved it..and the prices are great the only thing Id change is to not give packaged tartar sauce when you have homemade, also I dont think you should get charged extra for coleslaw..but the fries are amazing and so is the fish..
The best fish & chips on the island. Always delicious...I have never been disappointed.
Always a great meal , never go wrong with 2 pieces of fish and fries.
Great fish....fries not so good.
Delicious!
Great food. friendly staff. Yuum im soo full and still have some for a snack later

Excellent fish fast service for a good price. Large portions. The décor is very plain, comma but thats made up for or with the good pricing and fast service.
Huge portions for the price and friendly staff
I ordered the 2 PC haddock and chips with curry gravy. Absolutely LOVED it! It tasted as good as the chippies in the UK. It was greasy, deep fried heaven. The servers were super nice too!
Excellent fish all year long!!!
Very good fish and chips. The service was good, I didnt get the servers name but she was food. Worth a stop by to eat.
Both pre-Covid and now, this is a great place for fish and chips. The service is friendly, and the portions are filling.
Loved the fish n chips meal
Service was good Food was not so great
Best fish and chips on town for sure
The best fish & chips on the island. We drive from Victoria just to eat here. The staff are amazing.
Hot and greasy! Yum!!
Had the cod and panko shrimp special! Great taste. Fish was freshly and lightly battered.
Great food, friendly staff.
Worth the drive down from Nanaimo! I used to frequent the one in Langford when I lived south island. Hands down best fish and chips!
Good sized plates and there fish isnt greasy I approve personally
Great food and the fish is not greasy
Stopped in to grab a bite before heading home ftom a hike on Tzouhalem. Halibut is the best we have found on the Island. Fries are home-made, and the prawns made a super appy. Service was top-notch.
Excellent service great food!!
Tried it in Victoria and happy it is the same quality here. Cooked perfect and decent prices.
Got takeout. Great fish and chips.
Great place
Awesome fish and chips. I highly recommend this yummy spot in Duncan.
Always delicious food, my daughters and mine favorite place
Great halibut and chips. Nice waitresses.
Long time since we last visited their fish and chips still great
Fresh hot and yummy
Delicious seafood and yam fries, and generous portions. Phone ahead and pick up was convenient and very fresh!
Had 2pc halibut and fries, was awesome
Good food.
Chicken poutine is the bomb there
Ty for your food, was as i expected, was what i thought i would receive in every way, However, i saw the Owners or the staff or whoever works there, treat a few street kids and i mean 2 very young men and a girl no more than 13 years of age, just as they treated me, with dignity and helpful caring way, just as they should. I let them order before me so i could see for myself if they were going to shun them or mistreat them to get them out of the way of the rich high paying tourists!!! They again were treated with dignity and the same respect as anyone else would expect, I had just ate and because i saw what i did, i ordered more than i could eat. This place is decent. good food but more importantly, i saw their hearts are good!!! TY second most important high light of a 3 week holiday discovering Vancouver Island on my Bike!!!
We ordered shrimp as an appetizer and then both cod and haddock and chips. The fish and shrimp were excellent. The fries were a little disappointing and seemed they had hung around a while as not as hot as they should have been and a little tough. Not bad enough to take back but a little disappointing. White spot fried across the road are same style and consistently good. We were able to sit in one of the spaced out tables which was nice. Good Covid precautions. The young girl serving us was good.
The best in town.
Had Great Food
Absolutely delicious
Excellent customer service. Great food! Love the welcoming atmosphere and cleanliness.
Tried others and this one was really good, will go back
Best oysters around because I can eat 100 of those. Its a must go to place to eat at.
