We've been eating here for years, mostly take out, but we occasionally eat in. Love the Monkey Brains and finally tried the Volcano Roll and it was amazing!! Nehayla and Hannah are the best servers!
The service was decent. The food was average, but not amazing. The sushi rice was not fresh so had a dry taste to it. I was charged $1.50 for 1.5 tablespoons of tempura sauce, which was irritating. That seems petty for a restaurant that charges a higher price for food. The men’s bathroom needed attention. When I said the toilet was broken and would not flush, the staff said that they had told the owner about this and it had not been fixed. It’s a bit hard to rate this location as there were elements of the experience that had polar rating stars. Overall, it was ok, but might not be my first choice.
You can never go wrong ordering from Sushi House. My favourite roll is the Las Vegas roll - highly recommend! We haven’t dined-in in quite a long time, however takeout never disappointments. They even took our order 10 minutes before closing.
Love their food, this is my go-to for Sushi in Duncan. However not the best experience lastnight. I always get the Las Vegas Roll, Yellowtown Roll, and Giant Caterpillar Roll, then get a new one to try each time. Last night I got 2 new ones (total of 5 rolls for over $100), when I got home I realized my Las Vegas Roll wasn't there and I had been given a Volcano Roll instead. I did notice when I was making my order that they didn't repeat it back to me, I almost asked but they had never screwed up before so I left it. I immediately called, spoke to the waitress who took my order, her name was Hazel and she was fantastic to speak to. Halfway through her helping me though some guy grabs the phone from her (I assume manager or owner) mid-sentence and starts telling me that he "heard me say volcano roll" and that if I want to come down for my Las Vegas Roll I'd have to pay... He was adamant that I had not ordered a Las Vegas Roll, even though that's what I get EVERY time as it's my favourite roll they sell... I said to him "I just spent over $100 there and I didn't get what I ordered, so what do we do now?" He hums and haws and groans for about 10 seconds then gives me a "I give you Las Vegas Roll, talk to my server" and hands the phone back to the lady. The server took my info, but I didn't feel good about the humming and hawing and crappy attitude from the guy. I called back 5 minutes later and told them it wasn't worth the conflict, and to keep my Las Vegas Roll. Hazel was doing great, this guy did NOT handle the situation well. He made me feel guilty for not getting what I ordered! Then I felt like he had this chip on his shoulder for me and feels negative about me over the experience, and it's not worth it to have a place I like going dislike me or treat me like a criminal because I got the wrong food once... I've eaten there 100 times and this was my first time complaining. I didn't like the Volcano Roll they gave me and I also didn't like one of the new ones I tried (Fantastic Roll - but that's on me for trying it), so I ended up throwing 2 rolls ($40 worth) of it in the garbage. I didn't like paying $100 for $60 of food I'll eat and to have someone treat me like I'm trying to rip them off after they screwed up. I'll likely go back, but not for awhile, they've lost my business for a bit after this experience. You gotta be good to your customers, especially the ones that go there a lot (I ordered from there 2-4 times per month, minimum of $70 every time).
I has salmon Sashimi and beef Pho. The Pho was very disappointing. The broth tasted like simple chicken broth. There were no definable traditional pho aromatics to the broth. Not a lot of meat either. Plus... they serve cilantro instead of Thai basil. Cilantro offers far too light of flavor to be detectable here even with the bland broth. They should get Thai basil If you want to know the best place for pho bar none on the island go to Langford to the "original pho eatery". Try sushi house pho first of course. Then go to langford. I've literally driven the hour just for their soup. Just for reference I eat pho usually 3 or 4 times a month, every month, for the last 10 years. I've visited a lot of places. Anyone claiming this pho broth is good you can ignore them. Go to langford, try their pho... before you consider dismissing my review. The salmon Sashimi slices were are bit small. The establishment is clean but is uninspired in opinion. The servers here look young but they also look like they're hustling so that's a plus. Also forgot my $250 earbuds there and the staff was diligent in keeping them safe for me to return to collect them. They probably make ok or better sushi but I'd recommend they drop the pho from the menu or bring its price down to $11.95... one or the other would be the move.
I am torn with this rating. Ordered some rolls, Gyoza, and miso soup. Food was ready quick for takeout. All the food was delicious, but there were some issues. We were staying in a hotel. When I got back to the room I noticed no chopsticks, no soya sauce, and no spoon or napkins. I guess I’ve taken for granted that these things would be in the bag as they have been from every other sushi place I’ve ordered from ever. Not this time! Did they forget? Do they just not include this stuff? Made for a messy dinner with chopsticks or napkins. Missed the soya, and drank the soup like an animal!! The gyoza also seemed overcooked which was unfortunate. But overall the food was quite good. Would have been a 5 star rating had they remembered the other stuff!
Came here with my family, ordered the love boat, sockeye salmon nigiri and mango special roll. First off the sushi was great, presentation was nice, the fish was tasty and nicely cut. The customer service however... was lacking. It was a busy Friday evening, only 2 chefs pumping out orders as fast as possible, kudos to them. The servers were a bit lost and we were basically seated in a corner and forgotten about... While we waited about an hour we saw pickup order after pickup order go out the door. Aside from taking our order, no one came by, no water refill, no one came with our bill, no one looked our way. Kinda felt like we were a nuisance being there. This place is in a good spot and has great potential. 4-5 stars are within reach!

Went here before, went today and the service was horrible. Server was not friendly sat down ane waited like 10 minutes before finally checked on me.Ordered tempura and it wasnt fully cooked. My beef teriyaki was cold.

Strip mall sushi place, unassuming from the outside but absolutely a big step up from a fast food joint (Edo, etc)! We stopped here on our way to Malahat Skywalk. HUGE (I would argue, unnecessarily so) menu. We got salmon sashimi, 5 pieces of maki, and two rolls definitely recommend the Volcano roll. Everything came out in quick order and tasted fresh. Prices were appropriate for the quality and the staff was very friendly.

Sushi House in Duncan BC offers a cozy atmosphere with a limited yet manageable menu, which was a refreshing change. The staff were friendly, and we enjoyed the quiet ambiance upon arrival, although it did get busier during the dinner rush, surprising for a Tuesday night. The Salmon Don was delicious, but a veggie garnish would have elevated it further. The Dynamite roll was a standout. However, the prices are on the higher side, which may deter frequent visits.

I have been patronizing this establishment for years. First off, its decent enough, for Duncan. However, i feel like quality has dropped off in the last few years. Im sure like all businesses they are struggling with inflation (prices have risen as well - understandably). I just wish that flavour was keeping pace.
My meal was completely missed and had to sit and wait as my family finished their meal before anyone even noticed I had no food. First time going there with my family and definitely last time.

I ve been here a few times now, and I don t know that I ll be going back unfortunately. I was just there last night and ordered miso soup, a half order of spicy tuna sashimi, a California roll and a couple pieces of nigiri. The miso soup was honestly probably the best part of the meal; it was delicious. However, my sashimi was freezing cold and a couple pieces actually tasted still partially frozen. Not good. The other sushi was fine but nothing amazing. The sashimi was honestly super off putting. Also, the service was pretty horrible. I ll admit it was busy, but we probably waited a good 45 minutes after getting our food before a server came over to see how we were doing. Pretty disappointing.

This is one of our favourite places to eat in Duncan. So delicious! Highly recommend the Tuna-Attack (not on the menu) but order it and it will soon become your favourite!

It s fine sushi for bing in Duncan but the quality has gone down my unagi donburi was $20 and had very little rice for paying $20 for it I expected it to be as much as the bulgogi. You can even see how small the portion is compared to my computer mouse. forgot one of my rolls completely and when I asked for separate containers they put everything into one container. Family is now very hesitant to order from here again and we probably won t for a while.

Ive eaten at every single sushi restaurant in Duncan many times and theyre all pretty darn good but I recently tried sushi House for the first time. Big mistake, I ordered some sushi and it was okay I also ordered a tuna salad. I asked for non spicy, I received a pathetic small bowl of lettuce with a small bit of raw tuna but no dressing at all. When I asked they confirmed that they had not put any dressing on my salad at all. You would think for $15.95 a non spicy dressing like their pannko plater dressing, oil, anything would have been included or offered, not! So very disappointing. Again NaTrangs is still the best. Vegetarian options: I ordered a non spicy tuna salad for $15.95. small amount, no dressing and maybe 3oz tuna, would of been better off buying a case of salad at farm market

Sushi House has been putting in their A game lately. Everything we had was super fresh and tasty. The mango nigiri rules. Even the edamame was steaming hot and super salty, which is just how it should be.

The food is really good from Sushi house. The problem my family has is that we have have our orders wrong the last three times. When my wife and I come to visit, we are excited for our sushi night with the family, but it s been disappointing when we have to drive back multiple times or just accept that we did not get everything we wanted or ordered. There was also nothing really offered to make it better when we address the mistakes, feeling like you have to gamble with this place when you make takeout orders. Again, good sushi - just lacking a little in the service area.
I get the Teriyaki tofu entree every time I visit and it is delivered quickly and sizzling hot. It is always delicious. It is the best that Ive had in any restaurant. Vegetarian options: The Teriyaki tofu is vegan. They are aware of whats applicable and very accommodating. Dietary restrictions: They have gluten-free soya sauce which I will try next time.

Service problems all around were told to sit anywhere as the 2nd people into the shop, then soon after asked to move, uh no, I you said anywhere! My spot!!! Then, as attempting to leave blocked by this little witch of a wraithstaff, not nice. Asked to move again, frack, really that is not service! NO TIP for you!!! Of course, there shouldnt be tip culture anyway, but frack right off! Purple rice for the brown rice. Oh gosh, it is a good real crab California roll, mmm Meh, when in store September 19th, paid ahead then got yollered at to wait you have to pay! Ph dears, come on, look at your information before you make a fool of yourself
If you want great sushi but poor service around 7:30pm. Go to sushi house. We were told that they would be closing at 8pm. We ordered quickly food looked and tasted great. No offer for more tea, just wanted to know if we were finished just as I as was down to my last piece of roll. Didnt seem to be rushing the 2 other tables that were also occupied. Will never go back.

One waitress was attentive the other was eating sushi while behind counter and seating guests. Picking her teeth with her fingers and then handling menus and grabbing ice for drinks. Beef from the teriyaki tasted and smelt heavily like charcoal. Not once did they try to rectify the situation or provide a solution which meant I paid for a meal I barely even ate. Won t be coming back for awhile.

Sushi house in a strip mall so no problem with dinner parking. We had a group of 7 and they were able to accommodate us The service was great. They have very large menu selection. All the food they brought produced o complaints we were in awe at the size of our order as we eat out at sushi restaurants when we get together as a family. Been going here for years. Service has been more consistent over the last couple of years. The owners have always been friendly and welcoming. My go to is the Korean Ramen. My husband loves the Chicken Katsu. Always consistently great. Their sushi and tempura is also excellent!

Just came here for dine in sushi. We were ignored over all the take out orders. Our little one was really hungry. We would have just left but she was fussing so we ended up just ordering her one roll. Very poor customer service. She had a avocado roll and it was warm. One thing i can t stand is warm sushi. We won t be back.

Do yourself a favour and try the Monkey Brains ( imitation crab ) so glad I did. Literally the best thing to have come across my plate.

Slow service which could be forgiven if they didnt have BAD food. We couldnt even eat just tasted off not to mention the tiniest amount if avocado in my kids cali rolls they even questioned it. Charged $1.50 for some chilli sauce to go with my meal? I mentioned my kids wont eat their sushi and its their favorite. All she said was maybe theyre tired its all very fresh we were charged for everything but left it on the table. We will not be back. Sorry not sorry.

Me and my friend went for take out they said 25 minutes we waited half an hour then went and were told another 10 we got a beer while we waited it took 15 minutes for the beer, then another 15 for the food which okay I can deal with it. I got the deluxe sashimi 22 piece it was 18 pieces, which consisted of tako, salmon, surf clam, and sweet prawn. Hardly deluxe and it still cost 65 with tip for that and a simple house roll. Will not recommend and will never be going back!

second review i am making on this place, first time the server was being rude over the phone (not the first time this has happened, friends have experienced this too from the same server.) and now they have had me waiting at the door for 10 minutes without acknowledgment other than being asked if i wanted a menu to look at. Phone calls prioritized despite there being a fair amount of time between the next call and a family came in whilst i was waiting and they were seated, AGAIN, no acknowledgement to me. regret tipping them after that. on top of all of this, i hear the workers complaining about how much work they are doing, i work in food service and i understand how stressful it can be but that is not something you should be saying where people can hear you. if you do not like the stress of the job then find another one rather than complaining.
This a Friday when a restaurant should be in their top game. Service: Great we were seated at table by young lad, and were occasionally checked on. Food arrived a second after ordering which is miraculous, as if it was already made a day ago... Food: They dropped the ball here when I saw them pulling out premade rolls and cutting them on the tray. I did not eat but my girlfriend said it was definitely not the freshest she had ( if not the worst weve ever had). So sad. Do not expect to eat freshly made sushi here Atmosphere: Yuck yuck yuck, dead silence in a highly lit hall, I can hear the table across the room breathing. Then suddenly they start playing radio music, as if Im in a shopping plaza. Definitely not a place to leave impressions or set the mood for any type of Oriental experience (expected at a said sushi restaurant.) Ps: The menus posted here are outdated and youll be surprised with their new menu. Prices much higher, for a bit less food All in all I was disappointed to say the least, even without eating those premade rolls.
We were beyond disappointed by what we witnesses tonight at Sushi House. As we sat eating our dinner we witnessed the woman boss verbally abuse the incredible waitress multiple times. Threatening to send her home with no pay if she chats to the customers other than taking their order. She told the young waitress she no longer gets a break. Keep in mind she was shouting this to her in front of customers. I did say something so the boss came over and asked if I had a problem. I expressed that I had an issue with her abusing the young woman. She tried to justify it by saying that she gave her notice and leaves in January and she has to train the new person. Unacceptable!!!! You can not abuse people! Interpersonal skills are a HUGE asset, instead of abusing your fantastic waitress you should have had your new staff member watch and see how its done. I will never eat here again. 1 satisfied customer tells 10 friends, 1 unsatisfied customer tell 1000! My reply: Although your response is very well worded, I know the abusive woman last night was NOT the head waitress but indeed an owner. I have heard from many in the community including ex-employees, that this is not the first time your establishment has mistreated their employees. Abusing others is not ok. I seriously hope the female owner takes some communication classes going forward. As well, she needs to learn more about Canadian labor laws. I encourage those who still work for you to exercise their rights.

Always great food here. Prices are fair and the tea is the best. The server had this really long painted nails which is always a turn off for me and she seemed overwhelmed with the three tables that were in there. I thought it was odd that she brought me a soy sauce dish but no soy sauce.

Went for lunch after a hike in January. Hot tea when we first arrived was most welcome. Lots of choices and everything we ordered was good. Pho, some specialty rolls, some maki and some nigiri...all good.

This is my favourite Japanese food restaurant outside of Victoria!! Excellent food, service and prices. So glad to see John is still in business. Ive been going there since they opened, but now that Im back in Victoria I only get to stop n when Im driving through Duncan.
Order is wrong every time we phone for pick up. The waitress spoke perfect English, but didnt repeat the order back. Not sure we will go again. We go here when Japan Town is closed but problems every time.

We called for pickup for a later time, order was ready as soon as we walked in and the sushi was fresh and delicious. Great amount of wasabi and ginger to boot, which we find is often not enough for our preferences. A nice added touch.
We have always found the sushi to be fresh and of high quality. Sometimes they run out of tuna for nigiri, so if you want that, order early. The rice for sushi is nicely done. At some places the rice is too soft; not here. I do find that often the maki doesn t hold together. The nori seems to be too small. The result is that the nori doesn t overlap, so the roll starts to open up. Be cautious about their hours. Their takeout menus and the information on the front door say they are open on Sunday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. I have found that to be hit-and-miss. To make matters more difficult, when I phone to check, the outgoing message on the answering machine doesn t say whether they are closed or whether they are just busy. I think better communication with customers could bring that aspect up to the level of the sushi.

Terrible service, rude staff, and bad sushi .. I would not recommend this place. The staff was very rude, completely ignored our table and refused to address our complaints. The food was also very off-putting the spicy tuna roll was warm and the fish was very clearly not fresh.
I like this restaurant, in my opinion its by far the best sushi restaurant in Duncan. My fav. Is the tuna and salmon sushi , the seaweed salad is also awesome ! I eat here frequently and am consistently served , great , fresh , high quality food. I have found everyone here , pleasant and easy to deal with . The staff is great , always have a smile and are very attentive to the needs of every table.

New to the area having moved from California, so first time visitors. Absolutely NO complaints... the tuna & toro sashimi was superb; the crunch roll top class and the service super friendly and attentive. Got an Udon to go and that was perfect too. In fact, everything we ordered was top notch. They also happily adjusted things on the menu to our tastes. 5/5 without a doubt.

Good but they got my order wrong instead of chicken roll they gave me some smelly salmon skin roll... dunno how they got that mixed up as those are very different rolls.
Food is always touch & go 9/10 the hot food is L luke warm at best, when you bring it to staff attention they blame you for being late to pick up even when your early. The staff seem to not be overly personable & do come accross rude, it always feels like they more interested in getting you in & out in a hurry than giving great service & earning gratuities & return customers. We use to frequent here 1-2x a week & now it s more like 1x every 3 months. There s other sushi restaurants in town with much better service. Sad really for such great potential to be lost.
Although we didnt get to sit and enjoy, I was very happy with the to go service. Food was tasty and nice. Definitely a great place in Duncan.
Went there for a first time and the staff were friendly but the quality of the sushi was poor. I ordered the spicy tuna and realized after a few rolls that it was spicy sausage and not tuna!

This sushi restaurant has to be one of the best Ive ever visited outside of Vancouver. Always delicious. And the Wasabi is spot on not too mild yet not too hot. Goldilocks eat your heart out. And no Im not being paid or fed for this review. Man! My mouth is watering just thinking of the place. Im definitely heading over for lunch today.
Great food! Try the volcano roll if you love spicy tuna. It s amazing!!
I used to love this place. I had a weird experience where they refused to send two extra bowls for my kids to share in a large soup. We had ordered a ton of other food too. Was their dishwasher broken or did I offend some sensibility that I am not aware of. I asked the very apologetic waitress to send out the person who wouldnt allow any extra bowls with our meal. She came out again an apologized and said that they would like to take it back to the kitchen so that they could put it in different bowls. This wasnt a gracious offer of fine etiquette, it seemed a weird an inappropriate offer to take our food back to the kitchen. Im not sure what they were planning, but at that point I wasnt thinking it would be good. Just give two extra bowls! Why not? I left without paying and I will never go back. A customer lost to other great Sushi restaurants in the area.
Even with times difficult these guys have figured out to provide excellent service and great food. By far the best sushi in Duncan
Food is good and well priced but points off because everything is served in plastic and styrofoam, even for dine in, and they wont provide tap water.
We went there a few times before. The food was good but the service was not very good. The last time we went, the service was horrible. The waiter was in a rush and then no service at all.

Ordered our food. Which was delicious. Yet was denied free drinking water. Legally in canada. Any business that serves alchohol must also provide free tap water. Ehich was also denied
OK food, absolutely horrific service experience. I have been coming here for years and the service has always been a bit hit or miss, but tonight I left so frustrated I was almost crying - and paid $20 for the privilege! Had to move tables multiple times to accommodate larger groups that came in after me, and eventually had no table and had to wait outside (I had already been waiting inside for 20+ minutes). I was agreeable for the first 2 moves but unhappy by the end. Would have just asked for a refund but by then my food was ready, so I just ate in the car. Worst restaurant experience of my life. Note: the young wait staff were very nice - clearly just doing what they were told.
Good enough to go back there again. If your vegan, you should know they put mayo in their rolls. And the tempera has egg in it.
Service was poor, they were extremely busy, got our order wrong and overpriced for what we received. Don t plan on ever going back
Best sushi in Duncan or chemainus
Food was disappointing covid measures were non existent. Everyone had to order at the front putting everyone with in 6 foot of each other and no one wore masks staff included. Food came for some reason in take out containers.
I had a dynamite roll, california roll and gyoza...yum!! Have been quite afew times at Sushi House and they have always been consistently good.
Times have changed but still a regular. Pretty consistant food, sashimi, pho and cooked dishes are great! Read the menu some rolls have a lot of sauce on them now. Cant complain, as I say consistant and a decent meal. Covid is hard on everything
It felt like we were eating at a hospital cafeteria. Service was brutal 2 packets of soy sauce each and when you ask for more you get attitude. Everything is in to go containers and you to order and pay before you sit and eat. Food was ok. Nothing to brag about. For all the people who said this is the best sushi.I feel you have been missing out.
Food was not good, service was nice. The tuna was sketchy but the salmon was good.
