Haven’t been in a while and had such a great lunch on Sunday! Tried something that I wouldn’t normally pick- the scallop plate. Scallops were small but delicious and plentiful. Fries are always great here and they do a lovely side salad with house mango dressing- so gooood! The portions were very generous
This is a great location, it’s nice to be able to come by boat. We unfortunately arrived during a power issue so it took a bit longer to get our meals but our server Aura, was excellent. She always smiled, checked in with us constantly and let us know what was going on. The calamari was really good and the chicken wings as well. The fish and chips and burgers were excellent and I would recommend the cod it was very good. They have a bit of a challenge with the wine options and they look like they are short staffed but they were all friendly and helpful. You can only make reservations for the inside of the restaurant because the patio is first come first serve.
Interesting building and setting, fun to visit this bay and glad we saw it. Nice decor, cool looking bar. Staff was pleasant and service okay. Cocktails were not so great, 1980’s style weak drinks. I was not paying attention and ordered a mai tai which as the menu accurately stated, was made with blue curaçao (wrong) and did not have two rums including dark, and could not taste the orgeat (almond) flavor. Luckily it was not expensive. The margarita did not have fresh lime juice or at least was overpowered with a bad bottled mixer. Anyways this bar is not for cocktails, should have stuck to beer. Fish and chips (halibut) were just average or a bit below. Mussels were puny and overcooked. The cream sauce on the mussels and on the seafood Alfredo was pretty good tasting. The seafood Alfredo had skimpy quantities of smallish seafood like tiny prawns/shrimp and tiny scallops. The seafood was again kind of 1980’s style just barely seafood that is passable but not great. We did get good portions, very filling, and our total bill was reasonable. Nice to try but food was a bit disappointing and cocktails poor, so will try something else next time.
Fairly mediocre experience here overall, and don't think I would go back. Atmosphere was nice and the ship style decor / structure was fun and unique. Staff didn't give me the nice inviting feeling. I ordered a halibut burger and they sent chicken bacon instead, given it was late i didnt want to send it back and I like chicken so I ate it no hassle. Server didn't really seem to care about the mix-up and only offered to charge me for a chicken burger and not the halibut. I don't know in my experience for cases like this you offer a free pop or SOMETHING as a sorry and thank you for not being a hassle. Chicken burger was actually quite bad as well, bottom bun was soggy and chicken tasted old/ reheated. I won't be going back
Cool atmosphere, nice views. Staff was super friendly. Food was great. Got the nachos which were a pretty darn big plate of nachos with onions, peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos and olives. For a vegetarian dish it was delicious. Every one else enjoyed their fish. They are fish people so it must've been good. Halibut good, cod good, salmon burger good. Almost the only people in there early on a Monday night so that was great for us hermits. Would definately go again.
Went for an afternoon lunch. Very busy place with locals and tourists. A bit understaffed in the kitchen and serving but they managed to get our food out to us quickly. Highly recommend the fish and chips. Light batter and flaky fish with lots of flavor. Good views of the marina sitting outside on the patio. Definite recommend if you are in the Maple Bay area.
What a fabulous, nautical themed restaurant on the ocean in a dreamy tucked away location. Lovely windy roads surrounded by lush forests lead to this marina area. So many interesting things to see both outside of and inside the restaurant. Lots of details help to create this unique dining experience. We ordered 3 items to share and were blown away by the freshness and flavorful choices. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices were fair. A definite perfect addition to any outing. Sigh.....loved it!
Rode our Motorcycles down from Courtenay. What a great pub, food was good, staff was great. Will be on my list for future trip. The surrounding area is nice to. Also a floating home community. The best pubs are always a little off the beaten path.
Besides the need for minor reservations, it was a fine experience.
Lovely spot to enjoy a pint and fish n chippies after a hike or bike adventure.
One of a kind Pub. Great food and incredible setting.
Highly recommended. The food was fantastic and the staff was amazing.
Excellent service, great food, perfect quantities, and down to earth, friendly staff.
Excellent burger and fries.
Really good hamburgers and fries. Pleasant staff. Food : 5/5
Excellent location and views , I had the burger and it hit the spot . Definitely recommend . The waitress was friendly and nice .
Love taking the boat here and visitors. Great location! Halibut Fish and Chips, and Thai noodle salad have been my top choices.
We liked the food and the atmosphere but the wait staff were so rude it took away from everything else.
Not very friendly, were rushed out even though it was not full. Waiter was not inviting at all.
Awesome fish and chips
My wife and I went last night. Nice drive to get there, it wasnt very busy for dinner time. The food was good, prices were decent and the service was good, nice atmosphere. Will probably go again.
Awesome
Disappointing. The seafood chowder was mostly heavy cream and very little seafood. The wings, normally a sure win in a local pub, left us hungry for more as it was not a pound for the price! Over priced! Service, she seemed flustered, and even the beer, which would have drowned our sorrows; was just ok.. not coming back and we are suckers for a great pub especially with a view .
Quite possibly the worst clam chowder Ive ever had, and for $20, you get a 1/2 lb of wings at most!!! Another place living purely off their location. A real shame.
Had the fish and chips, crab cakes and desert.Nice and fresh. Coleslaw was great too. Table next to us had the seafood chowder. Looked excellent. I will be trying it next time for sure.
Been there twice, food is good and atmosphere is good. Leaving this review because the waitress was very professional and on it while it was busy. Was there today, she was the younger blonde waitress with tattoos.
We loved this place. It is in a lovely spot. The restaurant is very nice. Halibut fish and chips was amazing - thick pice of fish in a light, crunchy flavorful batter that not overly thick. The mussels in a cream sauce were so good, one of the best I had on the island this visit. Great service. Food
The food was very good with generous portions, and our waitress was amazing. The seafood chowder and the curry chicken were outstanding. My wife and I plan on returning for lunch very soon.
The food was delicious and enjoyed universally by my whole family. What stood out even more was the service. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, very timely, and thoroughly welcoming. We enjoyed an A+ experience.
What an awesome location for drinks and a meal!! Gluten-free options are available! Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free options available!
Had the sea food chowder. Its awesome .. such a cool spot
Pretty good place, loved the windows, didnt get to sit in that area...
Always great food and service. Their wings are the best from any other weve had.
First visit, food was good (Seafood chowder, wings). Looking forward to going back during patio weather.
Soup was a bit salty and got Chipotle seasoned coleslaw despite specifically declining the Chipotle flavored mayonnaise.
Cozy and intimate to share a meal with your S/O the staff are very nice and the food is amazing
Great fish and chips, and Jackie was the friendliest of servers!
The food has always been great when we have been here and this visit was no exception. Reasonable prices on well portioned meals make this a nice option for lunch.
Cozy Place, friendly staff and great food
Wonderful meal and superb presentation. Chicken stuffed with Brie and Apple on a bed of rice with vegetables and Rosemary Cream Sauce. Dessert: Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Torte also NY Cheesecake and Chocolate Sunday. The Shipyard is on the Pacific in Birds Eye Cove in Maple Bay on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Duncan closest major centre. Desserts pictured.
Great spot to eat and watch what is happening on the water.
Food and service was excellent. I asked for lightly battered fish and I got it. Sticky toffee was so yummy.
Had a delicious lunch today and was impressed with the selection, portions, and tastiness of the food. The service was excellent.
Really nice meals and stellar server
A lovely little gem in the middle of nowhere. The food was super fresh and tasty. Decent portion sizes. We had a bit of everything and the highlight was the seafood chowder, calamari and the fish and chips.
Cold beer, but overcooked wings. The atmosphere was nice, and you get to see some cool artifacts on the wall.
The food was amazing as always
Great spot right on the water. Beautiful views! Our service was outstanding! Delicious clam chowder and cold beer.
Excellent food and service
Delicious food, friendly people all in a lovely spot!
Great food good atmosphere and excellent service.
Came in by boat and got takeout to eat back on board. We were quite disappointed. The seafood fettuccine was SO rich and almost sugary we only made it though half. The lemon pepper chicken wings were drowned in lemon. We asked for a small bit of hot sauce for dipping but never received it. Don t think we ll stop in there again.
We met with group of friends for lunch, we called ahead to reserve and the restaurant welcomed us to get in ahead of the lunch crowd. Everything was excellent including the Fish and Chips! The setting is tranquil and very unique, well worth the scenic drive in from Duncan.
Nice pub but food a bit pricey
If youre ever in Maple Bay on the island a great place for lunch and a walk-about.
The seafood chowder is to die for! The drive out there from Duncan is very relaxing, and the marina location is wonderful. I really liked the nautical theme, too.
This place rocks. The Shipyard maintains a consistent nautical theme outside and inside the restaurant that is fun and welcoming. The menu is simple but effective. Some of the best crab cakes I ve had in a very long time. Never had salmon fish and chips before but I decided it was time to lose my fried salmon virginity. Pleasantly surprised as I m not the hugest fish and chips guy but these smacked! Fries were crisp to perfection. I look forward to visiting again.
Down in Maple Bay Marina.... good burger for lunch on Patio ..... busy !
Friendly service and delicious clam chowder. Been here for the third time.
Great seafood for lunch or dinner. We tried the halibut and chips and seafood platter. Wonderful breading and tender fish. Would get it again!
For some reason, we had not been to the shipyard in years. Went today and everything was great. Excellent food, great staff, views to die for. Will go back on our list for places to go.
Ordered the Taco Salad, highly recommended, then had the Salmon Fish and Chips. Good portion of food, but was so hungry that day. Staff are nice and friendly, sat outside and admired the view.
friendly pub @ times, not always , seems like one server has a bit of an attitude
Good food
Steak was so plain and tasteless, potatoes and veggies were great.
Beautiful location in the Harbour, fish was great, server outstanding
Lovely place, first visit there, delicious food, staff seemed quite busy so took awhile to get my water.
Good food and service
Great spot for lunch after hiking at Stoney Hill park. 2nd time going here. We were a big group and they served everything together and we were all happy.
Food was ok, seemed like one heavy set waitress was a quite grumpy about something
Great food
After we finally got onto the patio it was great. Drinks were good, seafood chowder was so so and I would pass on the crab cakes
I only had the poutine which was good. But not fantastic. 5 year old had a grilled cheese. Cheese wasnt that melty. Meh. But cute old place by the water. Beautiful view. Waitresses were all very nice! Food
Nice to be seated outside on the patio by the water and see different boats at their berths. Very pleasant day with our friends. Parking: Parking is limited on the driveway and on a grade. The lot on the level was full. The older people have a difficult time.
Nice place to have something to eat
We went as a family for the first time and the food was so tasty and fresh. The dish and chips were delicious. Batter was light and chips were crispy on the outside but tender. My daughter in law had the chowder and said it was worth every penny.
Best fries In the cowichan valley! The chicken burger was also delicious. Food : 5/5
We stopped here with hopes of dining on the deck with our 12-year old Doodle. Unfortunately, a no-go. But we did takeout and group of umbrella-covered picnic tables right next to the restaurant. Perfect! For the record, the seafood chowder is THE BEST Ive ever had. Scrumptious!
Nice spot for dinner or lunch. It was very busy when we ate here in August.
Were out of most things on menu, no seafood sauce for prawns, not very busy but slow service, fish was soggy
Such a wonderful location and service was great. The food portions were not very big but were very tasty!
Parking: Multiple parking spots Wheelchair accessibility: Real easy in and out Food : 5/5 |
1st rate lunch
Husband & wife out for dinner: Thought we couldnt go wrong at a place like this when it comes too seafood but were we wrong! Everything tasted like deep-fried frozen food. Nothing fresh but maybe the soup. The crabcakes were the absolute worst Ive ever had in my life. *Food was served before cutlery. Just not a good overall experience for us. Left knowing, never again!
Sat at the bar with a bunch of welcoming locals
Food was mediocre. Service was good. Its a fun atmosphere.
The view of the marina and seaplanes is great. The food is delicious and the service was very accommodating.
A comfortable restaurant in a scenic location with tasty food and friendly service. I had the tempura prawns and they were delicious as was the side salad with mango dressing. We were a large group but the servers were attentive and smiling despite the 15 hungry customers who arrived all at once. The prices were fair and the menu offered a nice variety. Ill be back!
Good, I was expecting more seafood choices
The poutine is great! Coming from a Quebecois Also great place for scenery and atmosphere. Food
One of a few great restaurants in Cowichan. Beautiful views and great service. Been here a couple times now and both times the food was outstanding. Had the halibut fish and chips and I recommend it. Best to book ahead especially in the summer. Also in the summer there is outside dining.
Great westcoast pub experience. Really enjoyed ourselves.
Originally a ship building shed this building houses a cosy restaurant with great food and service. Worth a visit for a drink or food. Situated in a beautiful spot in Maple Bay. Stop and enjoy the views and the history of the area.
Great location with beautiful views and the best French Fries in the Valley!
Food was good for the price and portions! Could have been a bit cleaner. Otherwise good experiance
The Thai noodle salad is unmatched , also the Seafood Fettuccine Alfredo is amazing ! The Shipyard pub / Restaurant steps on the other bars menus. Actually the Shipyard pub / Restaurant in my opinion is Duncans best kept secret. A prime location on oceans edge , Great pub atmosphere , outdoor patio has a fresh salt air breeze. Reasonable prices that locals cannot overlook or pass up. Menu choices that have been well thought out with a skillful kitchen staff that obviously takes pride in every single order that goes to a customer. Yet the pub atmosphere here thrives , just want a cold beer , no problem, no pressure to eat , feel free to grab any table or sit up around the bar if your on your own , every person feels welcome here. Live in Victoria or Nanaimo ? Take the time , make the drive , find Duncans best kept secret ( The Shipyard Pub / Restaurant ) you will be glad you did !! Im a lucky duck , I live near by . The photo is of a full pour draft, plus Seafood Fettuccine Alfredo, Yes a most delicious dinner !! Hit the thumbs up icon if you liked my review
Great food, great service, and super cute restaurant. This is our new date night go-to.
Nice place to enjoy winter dinner specials
Wow! Really Good!!
Great food!
The setting is gorgeous, set in a classic island marina the resterant has a marine themed dining room and bar area as well as a nice patio for the warmer days with relaxing marine views. The burgers are huge and tasty and they have a great seafood chowder. Top that with pleasant staff and reasonable prices.
Excellent burgers
Great food and friendly service.
Loved the food and friendly atmosphere.
These guys serve the BEST CHICKEN WINGS ON VANCOUVER ISLAND!
Excellent!!!
Great seafood
So good, I ll be back.
If you are in the area, you gotta check it out, very unique, good service and local beers.
Really love the patio here with its wonderful views of the marina and houseboats. Always really friendly service and good food and drink. The inside is a cool nautical theme so it feels like youre in a ship. Always feel comfortable and relaxed here! The furnishings in the pub are a bit tired but thats the only thing that could be improved.
After visiting Hand of the Man we as a group from Ysag had supper there. Very nice set up. The halibut burger was delicious. A friend had seafood chowder..sooo good.
Good food & great views
Awesome!
First time ordering take out , service wasnt good rude women, husband wasnt asked at door ,lady took people behind him instead .
The crab cakes and pot stickers are incredible!
Great atmosphere, good service, great drinks !
Our high expectations were based on reviews and word of mouth. We definitely did not have any delectable food here. The soup of the day was chicken vegetable chorizo. It tasted like watered down chicken broth with the vegetables (cabbage, celery, onion and carrots) boiled until they were limp and nearly indistinguishable in taste. There was no evidence of any chicken pieces and only one quarter slice of chorizo in the cup. The potstickers were made with a thick wonton wrappers. The first one I ate I got a chunk of gristle or tendon-either way, an unappetizing beginning to our meal. The sauce was thick and somewhat sweet, nothing like you would experience in a decent Chinese restaurant. The crab cakes were tasteless, the shrimp skewers that came with seafood platter were cold (pre-prepared) and the fried scallops were lacking any taste. None of the desserts are made in house or locally. I suspect that most of the food here originates from Sysco or some similar type of supplier. The good news? Our waitress was cheerful and attentive.
Nice restaurant. Waitress was great, food was good.
Beautiful spot for a drink. Server was friendly and our orders were put through quickly. Pub style food.
The patio is lovely, view superb, and the food is passable but needs improving. The mussels were tastless and some didnt open, the pot stickers were good, and the tempura shrimp needed more teriyaki sauce for flavour. The BLT wrap wad good.
Great serving of shrimp and chips
Little gem...fish n chips was awesome. Love the area! The cleanliness shows though with fruit flies a plenty.
Good food and beer after a nice kayak adventure. Watched the local shuttle plane land and take off at the nearby dock. There is a laundromat and outdoor washrooms nearby. I had a Strongbow cider for lunch, and a fish burger. The crab cakes were delicious! Enjoyed on their patio, in some needed unbralle-shade on a scorcher day
Good food but slow service
Nice location and good food and staff
We were four people at the table and we all ate very well. We ordered the calamari, crab cakes, prawn tempura and halibut fish and chips. We dont leave anything on the plate! The desserts looked delicious but they all had some dairy product in them so we had to pass. The place is very nice, the service was precise and friendly. Excellent option when you walk around Vancouver Island.
Called in advance to verify their menu. Get there and we are told the kitchen isnt fully open....wouldve been good to know when I called. Will not go be going back.
Nice patio deck with view of the boats on the marina. Food was good, the waitstaff was attentive.
Awesome food service isnt the best but all in all pretty good
Very mediocre pub grub that was over priced based on location, not the food.
The shipyard is a resuraunt my family likes to go to when we have gatherings with friends and we come back a majority of the time, especially when its not busy (Mondays are the busiest) Walking inside, the aroma is a mix of seafood which is good since its right on the bay, but its also got the smell of must, like a museum. Some may be off put by it, however I think it adds to the charm. I went with my dad and his parents where we sat on the patio. Thats the spot I definitely recommend as it has the beautiful view of the Cowichan Bay. We ordered our food and I got the scallop plate (as seen below). The fries werent 100% crispy, but crispy enough to where I didnt mind it. The scallops were a but smaller than I expected but size =/= quality. They were pretty nice. The service, even for a busy day like Monday was pretty good. Not super fast like Boston pizza, but not slow like just Jakes. Its a perfect in-between where you can Saveur the drink you got. The waiter was also really nice. There was one that took our order and one that went to check in on our food (Im assuming the manager) who were both really nice Overall, I give this a 4/5
Phenomenal chowder. Beautiful spot. I cant wait to go back!
Delicious food!!
Always a nice place to drop in for a beverage and a meal.
The building has been here for over 50 years and has changed hands a few times. The food is delicious and has a restaurant and bar with liquor license. The Shipyard restaurant has an outdoor patio overlooking Maple Bay views of beautiful scenery. A lot to see walking around the Marina.
Food was great, prices were reasonable and the service was awesome. Went there on a ride with friends. Definitely would go back and definitely would recommend.
Stop for a drink. Nice setting. Good service.
Convenient location, friendly efficient service and a beautiful view. We recommend.
Very busy with only 2 servers but our service was as excellent as the food. Definitely a comebacker!
Fun atmosphere, Good food cheerful servers.
Great food and excellent service.
Always outstanding
Lovely ambience and good food. Superb Service by friendly staff
Beautiful location, it was a gorgeous day made even nice by the views. Fish chips were good, not great. Batter to thick so it wasnt crunchy. The salmon had panko so it was very crunchy, would get that next time. Great waitress. Attentive and fun.
Tired a few fried foods and it was not good at all unfortunately. But the people are nice.
Fantastic food. Will come back
It was great as was the service and the food
Non-pretentious restaurant in the marina. Had the best crab cakes there, and the fish and ships was very good
Awesome place! Little older inside but the vibe is very cute. This was easily the best seafood we had on the island. It s on a cute little marina!
Had a delicious lunch and even being short staffed the waitress gave great service. Enjoyed experience.
Hadnt been here in a long while. Food as good as ever. Suffering from lack of staff though and had some long line ups. Love the blue buck ale on tap!
Great service and friendly. Food was great as well. Really enjoyed it.
Nice stock
Excellent service and excellent food with a great view of the marina
Amazing calamari and the fish and chips was delicious! Not greasy and perfectly crispy. Laid back atmosphere, most enjoyable pub experience in a long time.
Peaceful, quiet and great food!
We had the seafood fettucine and her friends had a big plate of nachos. The nachos were fantastic and huge although no guacamole. We enjoyed the alfredo sauce and it was a large portion.
Super friendly staff, food is good too. Great location in the marina. Patio is awesome kn a warm summer day! The seafood chowder is fantastic, be sure to get some!
Enjoyed sitting on the patio having a drink with a friend while we ate one of the best chicken ceasar wraps and yam fries. first time here and wont be my last.
Great food and service
Excellent
Always great food. Wonderful views
Try the shrimp plate! We had the best service today even though they were short staffed. Lovely location!
The food was quite awful. We ordered an assortment, and not a single thing was good. We sent back the overcooked/salty mussels. There were a TON of flies inside. It should be called the Shipwreck.
Wouldnt go back, atmosphere is nice, service was quick, staff was great but the sauce for the mussels, clam chowder & seafood pasta was the same tasting cream sauce with a slight vsristion for each dish
First time at the Shipyard and we were very impressed with the friendly staff and the warm setting with plenty of nautical memorabilia. The menu was broad, but how a place does fish and chips tells alot about the kitchen. Excellent was the result, fresh cut potatoes for fries and the halibut was cooked perfectly with a light beer batter crispy and flavourful. We will definitely be back.
Friendly staff and good food. Reasonable prices.
Great view of the harbour, good food and terrific wait staff
Great fish and chips the staff are amazing the views are spectacular!!
Love this place. Great bowl of soup on a rainy winter day.
Great experience good food
Visited here in November 2021 for dinner with family. It was mid week and the restaurant wasnt very busy so we were pampered by our server with friendly conversation and frequent drink refills. Its a well preserved two storey restaurant right on the water. Unfortunately, we were there in the darkness so werent able to enjoy the view but Im certain its beautiful in the daylight. Calamari with dip was deep-fried and tasted good. Halibut and chips were cooked perfectly and lightly battered (not overly greasy), the coleslaw was very bland. Overall, pleasant experience and would recommend a visit.
