The Oak Taphouse in Duncan

Starting with the good, its beautiful space, both inside and out. What takes away from that is the terrible acoustics. No sound baffling means that with just a handful of people inside, it sounds like a football crowd amplified through a stack of Marshall amps. The food could also be better. Ive eaten here three times, and tried multiple dishes. Id rate it as on par with fast food, or one notch below pub food. I strongly dislike giving a negative review but in this case I feel with minimal effort, they can really turn this into a fantastic spot. Ill look to update my review in a few months if theyve improved things. Oh, and please turn down the lights and throw in some warmer bulbs or something. It feels like a hospital operating room, or an FBI interrogation chamber.

Ordered the mussels on Thursday Oct 24/24. - tasted mushy, not good - was attending birthday party. 2 hours later was violently sick. - food poisoning. tried to contact management - did not respond

Dropped in there for a total disappointing order of fish and chips One would ve been better off to go across the street to the supermarket and buy a box of Captain Highliner s Fish and Chips and that would ve made a better meal. Was served by Kenzie a 5 star server .. but there has to be a shake up in the kitchen with the head cook .. and work on getting those fish and chips right!!!!

I am a regular at the Oak. The service and the staff are wonderful. Especially Kennedy, Kenzy and Kayla. They always put a smile on my face. Katlyn is amazing and very welcoming.

Food was good, and the service was slow but polite and courteous. They couldve probably used a little more staff, double check your bill, ours had a few mistakes.

Stopped by Friday afternoon for a cold beer and a bite to eat. Our server Katlyn was the best, she made us feel like family, and was so kind and helpful. The chicken strips are the best Ive ever had especially with their honey bbq sauce. The Craig Street Brewing Shawnigan Irish Ale was a treat, definitely will be back Thank you again

We ordered the prime rib beef dip with a beet salad/ blackened cod and Beef brisket. All were amazing, service was excellent. Will definitely be back! Oh, and a dog friendly patio !

I was recently there on May 20th . I had the absolute worst service. My family and I were were treated poorly by the waitress kaylie, I believe her name was . It took so long to order our food let alone enjoy it. Then when our food came it wasnt what I ordered , she apologized and said I would be compensated , I was not . Definitely will not be going back. This isnt the first time this has happened here , with the same waitress.

We like this place as we also like the other restaurants owned By same people,jakes,jakes at the lake, and Craig s street brew house,come a lot ,on New Year s Eve with a large group, I ordered the cob salad for 18 dollars ,nothing more than a bit of lettuce,one egg,and a bit of chicken , told the server some of the ingredients were missing and she said she d let them know ,nothing further was done or said about it and bill was in full, our party spent many dollars here and in the other places and have come to expect better,went back for lunch had the Mac and cheese excellent, was very tasty

Kenzy, Claire and Kennedy gave great service. They were very friendly and personable. Kenzy and Kennedy was knowledgeable about the beer on tap for the questions I had. The food came out fast and was awesome.

I had another great experience. Came in a little before a Canucks playoff game started. Not too busy, but go busier over time. Beef dip was fantastic, as usual. Server was friendly and efficient. Very nice evening.

Feta bacon dip was fantastic. Arabella pizza was good. Great service until server went off duty. No one checked on meal or if we wanted anything else. Took several minutes to track down our bill. We could have easily left without paying. It was great until it wasnt. Very poor finish to our dinner.

I had the black bean burger it was a little dry, everyone elses meals looked good, I would go back again and try something different

Was such a pleasant surprise! Wanted to watch the women s NCAA basketball semifinals and searched out a location with TV s. They put in on right away. The food surprised me. I ordered the Buddha Bowl with Salmon. It was delicious and the salmon cooked perfectly.

I used to love coming here but the last few times service has been shockingly bad. So I m posting this as a warning to people who might not be aware of the new ownership (a couple of years now). This place is not like how it used to be. It used to be a really fun and welcoming environment. The people who work there now act like the customers are getting in their way and annoying them. Service takes forever. Last time I was there I waited 15 minutes just to order a beer.. No apology when someone finally arrived to take the order and she was sour to boot. Good food and it s still a beautiful pub, but for the money you re better off going somewhere where the service is decent.

I was pretty excited to be going out on the island to a local pub, especially hearing about how friendly people are on the island. Sadly, I was majorly disappointed. From the moment we walked in, the women at the front gave us attitude when we were looking for our friends to sit down. The entire night, we felt like we were an inconvenience for being there and you could feel the judgement from the staff if you dare ask them a question or want to have a friendly chat. I never once got asked for a refill and the staff were very rude about clearing our table. Not asking how anything was, just giving attitude while clearing our spot. I will never be back. The vibe of it all completely threw us off.

Went for lunch with my partner. After being served drinks we waited around 15 minutes before the waitress came to take our orders. The food was alright, but fairly plain. At one point my partner asked for ice water, and was given a glass of lukewarm water without any ice (which would not be a huge deal on its own). After asking for the bill, it took nearly twenty minutes for her to come around to bring it to us, the whole time she spent chatting with other people. Its not terrible but not particularly good, Id recommend spending your time and money elsewhere.

I must admit, my recent dining experience left me feeling rather disheartened. Initially excited to try the fish and chips, my enthusiasm quickly waned when presented with an unexpectedly scant portion of chips a disappointing start, indeed. Moreover, the accompanying ketchup was provided in the smallest ramekin imaginable. Sadly, the main component, the fish, did not redeem the situation; it was encased in an overly thick and overcooked beer batter, resulting in a rather unpleasant aftertaste. Regrettably, I found myself unable to finish more than half of the exceedingly dry and flavorless fillet. On a brighter note, the coleslaw, albeit a minor part of the meal, was delightfully refreshing. Thankfully, the Arrow Lager I chose to drink was exceptionally good, and the service provided by our server was nothing short of excellent attentive, kind, and efficient, ensuring our glasses were never empty. I do understand that rising food costs present a challenge, yet it appears this situation may be indicative of a broader issue with shrinkflation and a lapse in quality control over the dishes served to customers. I earnestly hope for improvement, as I believe you have the potential to offer a far better dining experience.

Worst service I ve ever had. We listened to 3 teenage girls who worked there talking about the guys who just did a dine and dash on them. Swearing and acting like their parents own the place. There should be a manager around to supervise these gossip girls. We never did get a drink, waited 15 minutes while watching this drama go on.

Came here for a company lunch with about 20 people and everyone was very happy with the food and the service. The mussels, Cajun chicken burger, riblets, pizza and Mac and cheese were some highlights. They serve you wedges( which were yummy) not fries with the burgers if you care about that. Cobb salad had no bacon on it.

Me and my gf went for dinner at your place had a horrible experience. The hostis was rude to us . My gf felt very put off and disrespected then we had to wait 25 min for our drinks and 1 hr for our food . And people that orders after us got all there drinks and food before us . The food was so Gross the burger patty was very bland no flavour and her fish was very bland and coleslaw was warm. Wasnt worth the 93 $ would rather have had McDonalds big Mac.

Had the worst experience ever and is extremely disappointed in my local pub! Me and my boyfriend went for dinner and felt very unwelcomed and disrespected (not friendly, rude and dirty looks with attitudes) the wait time on drinks was long. And people who ordered food after us received there order before ours (substantial amount of time) Gross bland food, no flavor. The experience and food was not worth the $$$ and the fact I had to ask for refills on my drinks when I have an empty glass on the table when she brings my bf a drink is unacceptable. Terrible food and terrible vibes. Wont be going back and a shame for I live down the street. You lost customers this evening.

This place has a great location and an amazing patio. The only reason I knocked a star off for service is because I showed up on a Sunday when nobody was there and I cant fairly judge their service when its not at peak capacity. Aside from that everyone was lovely with care and attention to detail the one server even ensured I had everything I needed while I did my work. The food I was really surprised with, they dont just use frozen patties! These were real handmade burgers at a reasonable price! I got the dirty burger and it was cooked perfectly the burger was marvelously juicy with a slight pinkness to it as a good burger should have.(100% not undercooked, cooked to perfection) my kudos to the chef. They also have a really large variety of beers on tap. Lastly the atmosphere, as mentioned earlier the patio is amazing, though aside from that upon arrival the exterior almost had an old germanic feeling to the design and architecture. When you come in the door your met with a well organized entry way with clear instructions to wait to be seated. The inside decor is modern in all the right ways with a perfect touch of nostalgia and wooden accents. The lighting is also something I really appreciated they have a really nice chandelier that illuminates the main dining area that is just beautiful in my opinion. I would recommend this to anyone coming through town for a nice friendly environment. Ive also been here when some folks brought their kids in so its a really nice setting for a mom and dad who want to get out and still be the cool parents. All together a really well run business from my impression as well as care and attention to detail.

braised beef for the win

We recently held a retirement party for one of our staff at the Oak. We reserved the outside patio. The food and drinks were delicious. The staff we phenomenal. They managed to keep all the drink orders straight with over 60 guests. They had no problem adding food to our order as we had some hungry guests. The organization by management before hand and after was second to none. I highly recommend the Oak for your next event or just dinner out with friends and family.

A nice peppered halibut fillet on mashed spuds, with a (very) small mixed veg accompaniment. Everything was lovely, and the beers were lovelier still!

Food was good. Had the halibut burger which was done well. Little pricy though. $8.50 for a pint of beer is high for a pub.

Food was excellent. Service was friendly but suuuuper slow. Once our order was taken, the food came out fast and was delicious. But then getting the bill or a refill was a long time again. Friendly, delicious, slow. Three servers and five tables with 2-4 people at each. Not sure why so slow!

Stopped in for a late lunch yesterday, unfortunately didn t get to experience any food as it took an incredibly long time for any of the servers acknowledge we were there after being seated. Eventually we decided to leave and go elsewhere, but not before noticing while walking from the patio through the restaurant to leave, that all 3 servers working were standing together talking and laughing. I m much less confused now as to why it took 20 minutes of sitting there being ignored before getting fed up and walking out.

The food and service were good but the hard surfaces and high ceilings make it a noisy place. Some sound conditioning would make this a truly enjoyable place to eat.

Fantastic place and great teamwork amongst the staff. One of the more vertically challneged works (think her name was Tammy) wasnt able to reach the liquor i ordered but her slightly taller co worker (Katie i think her name is the one with long finger nails) gave her a boost and I was able to get my drink in satisfactory time. Great team cohesion i will deffinitly be back every day beacause of this (and i dont have a life)

had my first visit to the oak on Friday and it will NOT be my last! I was greeted with a warm smile seconds from walking inside, menu is amazing, I ordered the beef dip - fantastic bun, thin sliced meat and the jus, omg the jus - not overpowered with rosemary like most other places - the jus was spot on! service was fantastic, alcohol selection is what youd expect from a pub. All and all a fantastic experience, hats off to the kitchen - thank you for a great meal and also a shout out to all the front of house staff and bartenders - i truly enjoyed my visit as mentioned will be back!

Pubish experience in a restaurant atmosphere. With kids running around, gave me a memory of Ireland. Kid-friendliness: there they were, but I did check the menu for them.

Had the bruschetta for appies and then the seafood linguine for the meal. They were both horrible; ate a couple bites and left the rest. Had to hit a fast food drive thru on the way house. Very disappointed. Will never go back there.

Had lunch with hubby today, our first visit here. Our waitress Kirsten was so sweet, helpful and such a delight! Very , very good at her job. Our food came swiftly and was exceptional! Onion rings were crispy as well as the battered fish. Hubby s burger was Impressive and very much to his liking. and trust me, he is particular about his burgers! The place may need a little updating but I do believe the present owners have not had it long. Definitely going back!

Good food fair prices

We brought my Mom to the Oak Tapp house for lunch on April 3, right after the 3rd wave shut all indoor dining down. She is 92, and was skeptical of sitting outside. Once were served, all worries were forgotten. Everything was delicious, and we happily took our generous leftovers home.

Great patios - 3 of them! The food, drinks and service were amazing! Cant wait to return!

Love the new look great food

I was pleasantly surprised by this spot! We sat on the patio and although they were doing some work there to expand it, the entire ambiance felt a lot like a proper British country pub. I had the pizza and my partner had a quinoa salad, both which were amazingly done. The beer selection was curated very well with a lot of great options. Will definitely be back again soon!

Th service is excellent but my meal was okay (veggie burger) - soggy and tasteless, but may simply have been that what I ordered didnt suit me. Really liked that the manager (owner) came by to see how we were doing. It was World Cup Football final so the place was full of beer drinking fans (some Italians tucked away in the corners) so the place was hopping.

These nachos are a one of a kind experience. Thinly sliced to perfection, home made chips served nacho style. plus AC inside! Big patio outside under trees. Whats not to love.

First time here in years, new owners have done wonderful things with the place. Me and my father had the seafood chowder and both agreed it was perfect. I had the feature pizza (chipotle chicken) and it was very fresh and light. My father had the prime rib hoagie and loved it aswell. I also had a whisky sour and a margarita and both were made with quality ingredients professionally. The staff was friendly and prices were reasonable. Overall it was just a very enjoyable experience. If you havent been here in awhile I would highly recommend giving them another chance!

Decent burger.

Went here, waited 5 minutes to be seated (there was no please wait to be seated sign but its a custom of the times) no one to seat us. So we sat ourselves on the patio. Waitress came out looked at us, then ignored us, came back and sat another group, no service, someone else came out and saw us. Again ignored. We saw the waitress 3 more times, still no service (over 15 minutes and it was dead inside) wont be going back for some time and will encourage friends to avoid it too!

The Oak has gone through a few new owners and renovations. Most recently, bought by the same owner as Just Jakes and Jakes at the Lake. With the reputation of those two places , it is going to be a great place to go. The staff was very friendly. The food was good.
