Smart French bistro in a mock-Tudor building, with classic cuisine and a set lunch deal.
Went for Christmas lunch yesterday- we were a group of 6. The set Christmas lunch was amazing quality and good value for money. Service was efficient and the atmosphere amazing.
I've been here a few times and every time it's been so lovely! Bright & cosy decor, 2 course lunch is such a great value and very tasty. I particularly enjoyed hake with lemongrass & coconut. Everything was cooked so well...fish was so moist, delightful sauce, not too light or heavy, just perfect. Plus veg with a nice crunch & buttery mash. We were so full after mains but couldn't resist creme brûlée... It was the perfect dessert to finish. The place was busy, but the service was very friendly and efficient. Highly recommend ✨
We were a little early for our restaurant booking so had an aperitif downstairs in the wine bar, which was a fantastic start to our lunch. Excellent staff and choice of wines. The room is big with benches and tables plus a mezzanine. The restaurant, despite some comments is very rustic french. Great atmosphere and the food is of a very high standard for the price. I've been a few times and it's always consistent and the service friendly and efficient. It's always busy with a great buzz of conversation. No piped music either, hoorah🤓.
Very good french experience - prices are relatively high, however. - food is really tasty - great variety of wines. They have a sommelier in place for suggestions - suitable for a first date (table with candles and everything), or to come with friends - toilets available - only public parking available
Had a delicious 2 course lunch - mussels followed by duck. Sat in the downstairs window with the sun beaming through and enjoyed - in the lovely atmosphere. Waitress was very welcoming and attentive.
Amazing food, very high quality and delicious. Quite pricey, but the portion sizes are huge and the ingredients are fresh so it’s worth it!
Managed to walk in yesterday and get a table which was great as the restaurant upstairs was getting busy. We ate from the 2 course set lunch menu at £19.50 each and had a starter of Bruschetta, followed by one main of Lamb stew with veg, mash and greens and a Roast chicken breast with mushrooms, potatoes and greens. Dessert followed with one Lemon sorbet and one Panna Cotta. ( one dessert was extra to fixed cost). All this washed down with a bottle of red. Food was great , served by friendly efficient staff , we will definitely be making this one of our regular places to go in Edinburgh, thanks.
Excellent French cuisine with a modern twist. They do a delicious Christmas menu of 3 dishes for a little over 20 pounds and it is so worth it. The building itself is lovely, so definitely a place to come back on a special occasion
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh. Lovely spot to sit outside for hours on a sunny day with a fantastic wine and cheese selection.
Excellent lunch.
Very disappointed with our experience. We took an Australian visitor as we have had good meals in the past. My hake had half a piece of asparagus and half a piece of samphire and the rest was green beans that aren t mentioned in the menu listing. Not nearly as tasty or as well presented as it should have been. Lemon posset was smothered in red fruit sauce and unable to taste lemon until half way through. The decoration is dull and shabby and not as stylish as described in some reviews. Embarrassing that this was all we could show our visitor, especially as he insisted on paying. The staff were charming however.
£14 for some dried up beef stew! Nae carrots with the dish. I mean come on, I am a chef, dont over cooked it! Good wine tho, I shall admit!
Serves nice food but on the pricey side (around £50 / head). Booking recommended. Waitress was friendly
Great service and excellent food. The venison was very tender and the creme Brule excellent. Nice building and the staff allowed us to stay till closing. Awesome!
Awesome little restaurant. Great food, wine and service. Really nice view too.
Always get a lovely, authentic lunch here.
Just has the most wonderful vegan lunch here again. Not a vegan restaurant but every time I have brought my mum to meet her friends here they have bent over backward to give omnivores and fussy folks the best possible experience. Thank you again!
We had a lovely lunch, great food and service. Lovely atmosphere and comfortable surroundings. We will definitely be back.
Main meal was excellent and house wine good. Had venison. Was quiet for a Thursday night. Decor upstairs could do with a revamp.
Not really French fine cuisine and not as good as expected according to the reviews. Certainly overpriced for the quality.
Wonderful French restaurant in an old converted church.
Visited today on the suggestion of a friend who has history of eating around Edinburgh. Absolutely fantastic food with a brilliant atmosphere, my fiancée speaks French and our waitress conversed with her fluently and made her feel very welcome. We had a brilliant beef bourguignon and enjoyed our time here. Would absolutely visit again if we ever find ourselves in Edinburgh.
Excellent meal for 8 of us. Service was great too. Highly recommend.
Had a lovely meal and service.
Had a birthday dinner with 18 people. All was good, staff friendly, and had great food with various dishes selected for sampling. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and wine.
Another lunch, another joy.
Fantastic french cuisine. The Shetland mussels were a little on the small size, but delicious. The beef main just fell apart. Highly recommended!
Superb meal especially the slow cooked beef
Ive been meaning to visit this place for years, just because the building is so unique. Im very glad that I did! The upstairs restaurant has a slightly old-fashioned feel, but is charming. the food and service was absolutely fantastic. Theres a bit of a draught by the door, but otherwise top marks.
Fixed price menu with adequate choice. 2 courses £18.95. Atmosphere not very French, tho and food not really french enough. Tasty though. Service matched the atmosphere.
Really good, well cooked food made with great produce. Lovely, friendly staff and superb wine.
Had evening meal, lovely atmosphere with lovely food Vegetarian options: The options change but this particular day it was Gnocchi and goats chees Food : 5/5 |
I felt like I was in France, beautiful service, delicious food, lovely surroundings. Im wary of saying how good it is because I want to go back and not have to wait months for a table. It was a perfect lunch. Been back since this review and it was still wonderful. Vegetarian options: There were vegetarian options but I was there as a carnivore.
Great French Restaurant, excellent food quality and superb wines
Lovely food. Slight snafu with the reservation so if you book online check they have confirmed it.
Bestest
Very good restaurant. We go before the rugby. Lovely food. I would highly recommended it. Fantastic lunch menu.
Tasty food in a nice environment and great wine selection. Service was also very quick and friendly, would definitely go back.
Fantastic restaurant very good front of house. Food Fantastic...Nice bar .Well worth a visit you will not be disappointed book in advance on game day.
A great place for meeting friends and so convenient for public transport with some coming from out of town. Good service and food. Food
Nice good great service.
Visited for lunch after a recommendation from a taxi driver. This place is awesome. The staff are so informative, friendly and helpful. The food (we had a cheeseboard accompanied with fries) was delicious. The wine (recommended by a member of staff) matched the cheeses to perfection. Can t wait to return (aug 23)
Great meal, lunch menu great choice and value
A fabulous evening spent here with 4 of my good friends. Gorgeous meal, thoroughly enjoyed The French girl serving us was a joy great service & great sense of humour totally recommend. Thank you for a lovely experience
Back today for another visit and the food this time was possibly the best ever - just oozing with quality & flavour!
Lovely French restaurant with brilliantly priced food.
Great service and great food.
Very good restaurant
Good food
Consistently good and great value. An excellent menu reflecting France, which changes frequently Parking: The street outside has been in the process of being relaid for an extraordinary long time causing considerable frustration for residents and businesses Wheelchair accessibility: Part of the restaurant is at ground level
We had dinner with friends & the meal was very good.
Great place! Very friendly staff
Fantastic meal.....probably stayed longer than we should have but staff very kindly just let us sit all night and chat. Thank you for such great service!
We had a fabulous meal for 3 on 22 July. Great central location. Restaurant was very busy, but had a great atmosphere and vibe and the service was excellent! The food was also excellent and was a very good price too. We will definitely return.
Excellent service and top end food.
Excellent restaurant. Very reliable quality and great service.
Great food, great service would highly recommend
Fabulous food beautifully presented with outstanding service. The most delicious sea bass I have ever had. My partner had the best duck ever. Simple but nice dining room in an historic building. Had a table by a big window. Arrive early if you are infirm to get one of the few tables downstairs-the upper dining area is up many stairs. Our charming, professional, kind & beautiful 20 something French server in an amazing short jumpsuit added the perfect garnish to our lovely evening. There s a huge construction project on the road in front, but it didn t bother us. They need to ditch the dried grass placements which add nothing and can t be washed. Fair prices. Dinner only. A very popular wine bar is adjacent.
Excellent fine dining. Great choice of food and wines. Staff were all friendly abd helpful. Lovely relaxed atmosphere.
Very cozy French style restaurant. Great staff and the best mussels in town.
I always have a nice time. The food is delicious and you never leave disappointed.
The highlight of my trip to Edinburgh. Amazing food
I went with a friend for lunch yesterday. We have both been a few times & it is always excellent.
Excellent most wonderful place ..
We had a meat and cheese played earlier in the day at the bar and decided to come back for dinner. We had steak and it was very good.
Excellent service- lovely food - great Diamond Wedding celebration! Vegetarian options: Large Portions Food : 5/5 |
Lunch date with a friend. Restayrant was veey busy and we were told 2 hours for table, we over ran but this wasnt a problem. Two course lunch deal was good value and qualiry was very good, all washed down with a nice bottle of red. Staff friendly and polite. A lovely buzzy Saturday afternoon.
Good food. Efficient and friendly service, lovely relaxed atmosphere
Food was very good. 1 very large group (should have been in a private room) arrived and the volume increased substantially, making it impossible to talk at the table. Food
Lovely meal and wine. Staff very helpful and very prompt service. A bit noisy but it was very busy so not surprising Dietary restrictions: Staff were helpful and knowledgeable about Gluten free options
We were there for dinner. The staff is very friendly and professional. The kitchen uses good, fresh products and the game we had as the main course was excellent. I would have liked to give it five stars, but the sauce was completely missing from the game - it was only served in a brat broth. When its full it can get a little louder. Conclusion: A visit is worth it...but please dont expect French cuisine .
Great food and a lovely atmosphere. Always feels like a treat to visit.
So good
Lovely Christmas lunch. Starter not fantastic but main blade beef in peppercorn sauce and cheese course were amazing. Service great also. I would go back.
Love it here. Love the bar, the food, the drinks, the ambiance, the staff - all good.
Great food in a lovely restaurant.
Fantastic food and nice atmosphere
Very cosy atmosphere and friendly staff.
Authentic French Bistro 2 minutes away from Princes Street. Never dissapointed, good quality food and cook to perfection. Affordable prices. If you arive early you can get a cozy corner table. If you arive even earlier, there is a wine bar downstairs.
We had steak and it was delicious, very friendly staff
Beautiful French restaurant, cozy atmosphere & food was excellent
A little gem on a side street with some real French vibe.
Classic menu, lovely food. We will definitely be back!
The food was divine, the service exceptional. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting fine dining at a reasonable price.
Very lovely French restaurant with tasty food and excellent service. We had a starter and then the meat, that was tender and perfectly cooked. The Crème Brulée is delicious. A place to come back to.
The food was absolutely amazing! Reasonable price and great service. I would highly recommend to anyone. Will definitely visit again in the future. :)
I recommend this place, really good service and food. Do not loose the opportunity to have a lunch on la p tite folie and book à table !
Always love lunch here - the food is always delicious and the place has a real buzz about it.
Excellent lunch, lovely staff and good price. First time l have been here but it wont be my last
Very cozy place and the girl from the northwest of France is a charm. We had a VERY good dinner, the dishes were delicious and everyones attention was very good. It is less expensive than it seems. We will return.
Good.
I got a piece of glass in my meal. A weak apology, no explanation offered and the only gesture was to reduce the price of my meal (one of four) by 50% from £28 to £14. Any decent restaurant would have at least taken the cost of my meal, which I was unable to finish, off the bill.
Good fun and excellent service -enjoyable
Excellent food as always, beautifully presented and reasonable cost even from the a la carte menu. Good deals at lunchtime. Friendly service
Tremendous food and really great service.
A lovely French restaurant serving up delicious food! Friendly service from the staff too
Relax french Restaurant with a small but good menu Lovely atmosphere
Spectacular food and service. We hadnt booked and was accommodated without any hassle. The moules were the best I have tasted for years ( including France). The wine list could do with extending to compliment the truly great food they cook up here. We will become regulars for sure...thankyou for a great afternoon, really made our weekend.
Good food and service.
We went to the buzzy wine bar: excellent and filling charcuterie & cheese platters (chambéd to perfection) and a nice glass of reasonable Cote du Rhone. We were off to a concert or we would have lingered for a bottle or so
Always a good time and excellent food.
It was my wife that was there food excellent staff excellent
Great atmosphere, delicious food, fantastic service from lovely staff and impressive art in the bar!
Delicious meal. The blade of beef was amazing. So tender. Sticky toffee pudding... Best puddy ever.
Fantastic! Really delicious food and very friendly service. We had boeuf bourginon Vegetarian options: Were on the menu Dietary restrictions: Gluten free available
Great food and lovely service
Great Atmosphere. Friendly staff. Just a small menu but really worth the visit
We had mussels and scallops for starters and beef and lamb for mains. All very nice, so would definitely recommend.
Food was great, service was also good, friendly staff.
Stunning food and I dont say that lightly, I have been in the trade at a decent level and it was our anniversary so we expected a lot ...and got it... my wifes scallops were perfectly cooked and seasons her seabass was exceptional..and then theres the lamb...which has to have been some of the nicest lamb I have ever had and as I am 61 and been in the trade for 25 years thats saying something... the only little moan would be the pureed potatoes, I dont like that consistency but thats my own taste...the lamb was cooked to perfection as were the Asparagus tips... the Bulgarian gentleman in charge came over a few times fir a chat, which I like, always at appropriate times too so service was good . The wine we ordered was not what was delivered but they offered to change immediately but the wine was great so happy days excellent place and decent atmosphere too for midweek..but the food is divine..so well done to them and best if luck in the future.
The best choice of restaurant. Great staff, cozy atmosphere, delicious food.
This would have been 5 stars but ... My wife and I enjoyed a very pleasant lunch today in the restaurant upstairs. The waiting staff were excellent: attentive and very pleasant. The food and wine was very good. We tipped accordingly. However ... I had arrived a little early and went into the downstairs bar to have a drink while I waited for my wife. I ordered a pint of Paolozzi. When I was served, the pint was a little short of the full measure, so I asked the server to top it up. He refused and tried to argue with me. I told him that in 50 years of drinking in Scottish pubs, I had never been refused when I asked bar staff to top up a short measure. He then reluctantly and with bad grace topped it up. When my wife arrived, I spoke to the server again. He had been chatting behind the bar to a woman who I assume was a member of staff, off shift. I told him that arguing with a customer was never a good idea and that a full measure was to the brim of the glass. He began to argue with me again, saying that he would not decrease his bar profits by doing so. For the sake of a few mls of beer and a pleasant response to a very reasonable request, youve lost a bar customer although I will happily use the restaurant upstairs again.
Fabulous dinner on Wednesday night, we opted for the vegetarian option, lovely.
Everything perfect!
I was there for a Christmas lunch. Unfortunately, it was very rushed, we were constantly told how long we had left and that we would have to leave on time. I understand its a very busy time of year but it was quite off putting and we felt pressure to eat fast. It was also very noisy as lots of people had been crammed into the dinning room for Christmas lunches. The food was ok, nothing special. As this was a Christmas lunch, I cannot comment on their service on a typical day and or on their regular menu which may be a very different experience. I dont think Id visit again for food.
Expensive and the service was pleasant but not excellent: we were kept in a corner, ages between dish and dish.... and just left aside. Food was good, but small portions, never asked if we wanted more bread or else. Id say good, without extremes, hence the 3 stars.
Had a wonderful Christmas lunch with my best mates - everything we ordered was utterly delicious. The staff looked after us really well and were lovely funny friendly - was the perfect - thanks guys Xx
Exceptional service. You can feel the warm welcome in French style. Fantastic food!
One of my favourite restaurants anywhere!
One of our favourite places. Lovely food and ambience. Great, attentive team.
Always a warm and friendly welcome. Great menu, delicious food, presented beautifully.
Even though we could only have a drink outside, made welcome and comfortable...
Consistent, high quality, reasonably priced seasonal menu of delicious fish, meat and vegetarian delights. Great wine list, friendly service in a beautiful setting. Highly recommend.
Nice restaurant with food served in an upstairs cozy environment. I would have scored higher but having been a couple of times the quality of food and service has fluctuated between superb and mediocre.
Great cheese Board. Very varied. And a fantastic range of wine.
Excellent service. Food amazing. What more can we say. Favourite place in Edinburgh.
The best French restaurant in Edinburgh and has been for 20 years
I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions and have always found the food, atmosphere and service to be first class! However, not on this occasion!.....The lunchtime starter (Pan-seared King Prawns, Light Soya, Lime and Sweet Thai Sauce) was fine, albeit a little small portion wise The main course (Lamb Tajine with Butternut and Lemon, Coriander, Mint Yoghurt and Roast Potatoes) was lukewarm, lacking in meat and pretty tasteless. Very disappointing! I opted for the cheeseboard at +£4....The grapes were mouldy, and the cheese and crackers were sparingly put on the plate. Not good value for money. Overall, it was a bad day at the office for the chefs at La Ptite Folie
Wonderful staff and food wss first class
Great to be able to return to La Ptite Folie - service, food, ambiance and wine range still superb. Having enjoyed a leisurely a couple of days ago I already look forward to my next visit. It also merits mention that a follow on drink in front of the Le Di-Vin, downstairs, rounded off a most enjoyable visit.
Lovely location and food is amazing - great atmosphere.
Nice French place, good products and fairly priced. Will come back for sure.
Pure charm and a very nice atmosphere.. we had a meat a cheese board.. gosh yummy.. washed down with some.fine wine.. life is good x
Nice restaurant, with friendly staff. Mussels for starters were large and delish. Ordered rare steak and it was medium... not to be expected in a French restaurant. Otherwise 5 stars.
Excellent food and service. Mussels as a starter to die for. I loved the sirloin whilst others in party had the lamb described by them as wonderful. Top marks Chef.
Whole experience excellent
Had a great meal with friends..mussels were fab staff were friendly whats not to like
Amazing!! Definitely recommend
Lovely little french restaurant, beautiful old building. Friendly staff, and very tasty food. Good selection of wine. Very enjoyable and would return again. Recommended.
One of our favourite places. Food excellent staff wonderful and would happily recomend.

Lovely French ambience. Food is always delicious.
Super.
Very reliable neighborhood bistro type place. Good value set lunch and good wine bar downstairs.
Delightful town centre bistro with a fine menu.....mussel starter excellent and pork just right...5 star
Lovely food. Friendly service. A bit noisy
Superb service and food
Food out of this world. Amazing xx
Good service
Excellent restaurant
Good menu. Tasty food and good service
Staff were very friendly and professional. Meal was very nice
Very good meal. Wonderful mussels and pigs cheeks followed by a ribeye and lamb shank. It s all fresh, with great quality food cooked to perfection. Good wine list. Best meal out this year.
Atmosphere great. Food very good as is the service. We love this place!
Good food and a cosy family atmosphere
I went on a date here, it was really romantic, very Parisian and not pretentious. The food was out of this world, we both loved it. The only thing I would say is the floors had a bit if litter on them. Other than that fabulous!
Beautiful meal.
Great plate of mussels and tasty sea bream.Always excellent food and good to see them open again.
Great coffee and able to sit outside in the sun. The best bit was the company I had.
Very cool and relaxing, interesting menu will be back soon
Great food. Great service. Definitely will come back again
Decent fixed price menu and selection of wine.
Great informal atmosphere, good place to meet a friend.
Fabulous food and service
Very friendly staff, good food, could be a bit more covid sorted, ie. Clean tables outside inbetween customers.
Had lunch today, my friend and I had steak frites, good but I was there for lunch on 21st August and the steak frites was excellent!!Today, disappointed as the steak was very pale as were the frites, the pepper sauce was also too thin!Still a lovely place to eat and Im returning tomorrow evening with my sister!
Splendid, unpretentious French cuisine and service..
Superb. Sat outside on a cool September day in bright warm sunshine with stunning wines, mussels and fish (hake). Highly recommended. (Please ignore the dog treats- they keep him calm!)
The outdoor tables catch the sun all afternoon so if youre looking for a social drink without being indoors this is a great location for fresh air in the heart of Edinburghs West End. A perfectly sunny autumn day today made it the ideal spot. (indoors is quite nice too ) Friendly staff and a good wine list. Delighted that they have Frost Pocket Sauvignon Blanc.
Great food and high standard of customer service. Following good covid-safety regimes so felt comfortable and wouldnt hesitate in booking return visit.
