The Butternut Tree is just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Alberta Legislature Grounds close to Edmonton’s majestic river valley. Chef Downey’s first restaurant pays homage to the places he’s lived, worked and explored, while showcasing seasonal ingredients from Canada’s diverse landscape. A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen. The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.
I had the pleasure of dining at The Butternut Tree in December 2024, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The service was absolutely exceptional—our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic evening. The food was equally impressive, with beautifully plated dishes that highlighted the best of local and seasonal ingredients. Each course was perfectly balanced, and the flavors were remarkable. The ambiance of the restaurant is elegant yet welcoming, offering stunning views that enhance the overall dining experience. I highly recommend The Butternut Tree for anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Edmonton.
I had an unforgettable dining experience at The Butternut Tree in Edmonton. From start to finish, everything was top-notch! We had the Beef Wellington, which was cooked to perfection — tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The Winter Cabbage was a delightful side, offering just the right balance of texture and flavor. The Whipped Ricotta was light and creamy, adding a lovely richness to the meal. However, the true star of the evening was the Cauliflower Soup. It was absolutely divine — velvety, perfectly seasoned, and surprisingly complex. It’s the kind of dish that lingers in your memory long after the meal is over. The ambiance was equally impressive. The restaurant offers stunning views of the river valley and the Legislature building, adding a scenic touch that complements the exceptional food. Highly recommend The Butternut Tree for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience in Edmonton. We’ll definitely be back!
Came for the tasting menu $105 per person and it was so worthwhile! There is parking behind the building a little hidden but super close. And I did see a baby change table in the bathroom too… but this is definitely an upper class dining experience. To start with we decided to order some drinks instead of doing the wine pairing. Tried the non-alcoholic Bees Knees $10 and this ginger tumeric mocktail of healthy goodness was right up my alley. I ordered the signature London Fog $16- earl grey vodka, vanilla cordial, lemon, egg white. And this drink was amazing! Creamy and smooth and so tasty. Our servers were amazing, my water cup was always full and they checked in on us often but not too much. They were friendly and did a great job presenting the courses as they came out. The tasting menu changes so I’d be game to come back and check it out another time for sure: Ahi Tuna - Shishito: so refreshing and I loved the spicy pepper salsa medley Bison - cured egg: I’ve never had bison tartar but dang this was such a unique and delightful dish. It also had some mushrooms on it that were so delicately tasty. Winter cabbage - caramelized whey: the best dish in the house! I’m a big cabbage fan already but this dish was just delightfully rich and full of flavour. Lingcod - Fennel Velouté: probably the least outstanding dish. Still good and served with lots of root vegetables which I enjoyed. Typically if I order from a menu I lean towards the fish dishes so I’m glad they served one in this tasting menu. Alberta AAA ribeye: very fitting for an Alberta/ local food forward restaurant. You can’t go wrong with a good cut of meat cooked right. Posset - raspberry: this was more of a mint forward dish, the brig strips of mint were alright. I enjoyed the flavour of the posset- it was light and fresh with a nice lemony flavour. And to finish it off in case you weren’t full enough we got a small order of the cheese board. Lovely presentation and the jams/jellies/honeys so good! Overall a memorable and delightfully tasty first tasting experience I would recommend to anyone.
Disappointed and honestly embarrassed with their high tea. What should have been an elevated and sophisticated experience it fell flat in both taste and presentation. To have a dry tasteless Oreo cupcake as a course in a fine dining restaurant was laughable and what's more it looked like my toddler decorated it. And to present a green dyed corndog with tacky sprinkles shoved into it was so cringey. I bought this high tea as a present to my sister in law as her first experience here and it was a genuine fail. We were embarrassed at the quality of the food and won't be recommending this restaurant anymore. Either the chef has changed or they are majorly cutting corners but don't waste your money!
This birthday experience was a disappointment!I came in with high expectations for fine dining, but it was far from it. The restaurant has a nice location and the atmosphere was decent. We chose the tasting menu, which was $125 per person, not including tax. However, dish after dish was simple and lacked creativity. I was utterly disappointed with both the taste and the quality. Is this what we get for a $125+ meal? Their à la carte menu is much cheaper, around $70 per person. The biggest letdown came with the last two courses, which were desserts. I was expecting a surprise, but they were a total disaster. The final dish was a cheap lemon pastry, something I wouldn’t even want to eat if it were given to me for free. What’s worse, the table next to us had a birthday candle arranged for them, yet our server forgot about mine? We had mentioned it was my birthday both when making the reservation and when we were seated. When I gave feedback about the service and food while paying, the server was indifferent and even suggested we leave a review on Google! I won’t be coming back. The 8-course meal took us 2.5 hours, and none of the dishes were surprising or exciting. The price was way too high, and the service was terrible. Avoid this place if you’re thinking of getting the tasting menu – it’s a complete disappointment.
Absolutely fantastic dinner experience. The cocktails are very unique, the duck and salmon were phenomenal. The service was amazing from start to finish, with a description of every dish as it came out. Loved this and will definitely be back!
The Butternut Tree was our venue for our wedding and I cannot say enough amazing things! From the planning, to the day of everything was so seamless! The staff went above and beyond making our day so special! The food was absolutely amazing, the location is perfect with stunning views of the river valley and the Legislature building! Thank you to The Butternut Tree for making our day that much more amazing!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE BRUNCH! I always wanted to visit and finally here I was. Straight out the best brunch I had in a long time. I had a quiche with extra mushrooms, avocado and potatoes. Everything was fresh and warm. Copious amount of fresh arugula salad! I am always happy to find a place that doesn't skimp on good veggies :) Clean and minimalistic decor with open kitchen concept. Friendly service and their cocktails weren't too bad either. I would like to come back and try other brunch menu. It was such a treat!
Beautiful as always. Beef Wellington was magnificent. Parking: The Parkade isnt open to public on Sundays, but there was plenty street parking Food : 5/5 |
The food is delicious and the view of the legislature building is beautiful.
They ll be closed by March. Just returned from a pre paid high tea . Fatty cold food. Really???? All the savoury was cold. How dare you serve such garbage.
The drinks were good. It was a nice view of the leg grounds. The food portions were not that big however they were tasty.
Was here for the tasting menu Nov 8 2024. Was very happy with the pacing of the courses as well as the food and excellent service. Highly recommend
The service was impeccable. Food was beyond amazing. The view was excellent.
Very nice location & view! Is on the more expensive side, but it is a higher end restaurant so that is expected. The Gnocchi was very good, as well as the whipped Ricotta. Our sever Andy (?) was very knowledgeable and friendly. He explained the dishes & drinks very well, and was very attentive!
We had my daughters wedding there on the weekend. It was perfect. The restaurant was on top of all the details and Samantha was great to deal with through the entire planning process. We never once had an issue with anything. Samantha also had suggestion for cake and other vendors that knew the venue and that made things a lot easier as well. Staff at the restaurant were great; casual and fun to talk with and they make an awesome Old Fashioned. :)
Went for my partners birthday and we really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Lovely place to celebrate with great service.
As a past wedding couple, I d steer clear of this venuez
Food was meh, but looked so good
The smallest portions with lack lustre taste and a HUGE price tag. It was actually kind of comical. I m surprised to see so many great reviews. The view is beautiful but I definitely won t go back.
Nice setting, comfy chairs, great service. The food (brunch) was, however, only so-so. The pork belly on the Benedict was overcooked and dry. Perhaps the dinners are of higher quality? Food : 3/5 |
Loved the food and service, beautiful location. Thank you Denise!
This is the 2nd time that Ive had the pleasure of dining at the butternut tree, my first time was 5 years ago. The food is still as excellent as memory serves, we went for a birthday celebration and ordered the tasting menu. Just wow, every course was beautifully prepared, our server recommended that we add the bread basket with the soup dish; she knew her stuff. From the appetizers to the mains the food did not disappoint and was perfectly timed, just enough of a wait to drum up excitement for the next dish and plenty to savour the one already completed. Thank you for the wonderful experience. Parking: Not sure if the parking garage was paid or not as I parked on the street, but it is easily accessible on the front side of the building.
I recently visited The butternut Tree Restaurant for brunch and was deeply disappointed. The menu offered limited choices for those who do not eat pork, and the pre-made items left no room for modifications. When we requested a cheese board, they refused to accommodate us. The food was terrible, with small portions and poor quality. The beef short rib was stale and dry, clearly pre-cooked and poorly reheated, as nothing was served thoroughly heated. The only fresh item was the poached eggs, but even that couldn t redeem the meal. The chef was inflexible and lacked customer service skills. The servers were also uninformed about the menu and did not understand diverse customer needs, often taking orders only to return and inform us that items were unavailable. Overall, it was my worst brunch experience in Edmonton so far. I do not recommend The butternut Tree Restaurant. Dietary restrictions: Not many options
Its fantastic and expensive!
Had a great time with friends and great service from Denise! The perfectly toasted creme brulee was one of my favorites! Oh and thanks for the coke
finally got a chance to come and dine and was not disappointed. although the servings LOOK small they are not and are quite filling. staff are extremely friendly and atmosphere is nice and quiet. parking was a but difficult but manageable
They sell in-house made jams and jelly. DELICIOUS! The sauce for our breakfasts was salty, which was surprisingly good. Food
Our first time dining here in town from Calgary, table of 5, amazing Canadian sourced ingredients, top notch service, beautiful view. The ribeye, gnocchi, duck and halibut were incredible. Thank you!
Wheelchair accessibility: Accessible ramps in front (west side) of building
On the Facebook page Edmonton, You ve got to eat here!! I always read the reviews of the restaurants that pique my interest and jot them down into my phone. My sister-in-law s birthday was the next day, so I suggested to my wife that we take her sister for a birthday breakfast. After several minutes of looking through my list of places to go, I decided that The Butternut Tree would fit the occasion. I then used their online reservation service to book a table for the next day, which was a Saturday Brunch. In their process, it asked if there was a special occasion and I stated it was a birthday, believing the staff or management would possibly mention it to my guest, which would have been a great touch to her special day. When we arrived the next morning, we noticed only 2 tables had customers so I guess reservations were not necessary. Before we even looked at the menu, our waitress suggested the mimosas and because it was a special day, I said we d take 3. There were several flavors, so I ordered the apple, my wife had orange and our guest had pineapple. We also ordered 3 Americano coffees. After looking over the menu, our guest decided on the Beef Wellington and I chose the same. My wife being the vegetarian of the group, unfortunately had few options available. She wanted The Fjord Toast with salmon, but it wasn t available. With limited options, my wife picked Mushroom Toast. When the Americanos came to the table, they didn t have cream or half-and-half but only milk. As soon as I tasted the Americano, I looked at my wife and said quietly This is horrible . My wife s comment was a whisper It s not even hot . When you have a guest, you want to keep your complaints to yourself so I just told the waitress I think I would rather have tea instead . At that same moment, our guest pushed her coffee to the waitress and said I ll have tea as well . My wife said, Make that 3 . Our guest commented quietly I think there is something wrong with the coffee . Anyway, while we were waiting for our tea, I tasted my apple mimosa, but it had no apple flavor. And what made it worse was that for $8 each, all of our small Champagne glasses were only half full. For goodness sake why not give your guests at least a ¾ glass, but again I said nothing. We then got our tea and chatted for a while before our food came to the table. When she put the plate down, I asked the waitress, Is the Beef Wellington a Filet? She didn t know the answer, so she went to the kitchen to ask. She came back and stated it wasn t. Beef Wellington is always made with Beef Tenderloin, but they had no problem charging $30 for (literally) a 4 oz steak wrapped in puff pastry (see picture). The main part of the dinner was very small too small for my liking. The plate had a small amount of Arugula salad with 4 cherry tomatoes and one poached egg with Hollandaise sauce. I have to say that the Hollandaise sauce was some of the best I ve ever had, but it shouldn t have been my highlight of the brunch. My wife liked her Mushroom Toast but remarked it should have been called Eggs Benny with Mushrooms. During the last part of our dinner, the manager finally came to our table. I was expecting her to ask if someone was celebrating a birthday today, or to ask us how our brunch was, but instead, she just took our plates and walked off. What is the use of asking Is there a celebration when reserving a table then? It was a wonderful opportunity lost. Managers should always get a consensus from each group that comes in to spend their hard-earned money. If you don t, you ll never know what they liked or didnt like. Our guest liked her brunch but only gave it 7 out of 10. The reason the portion was too small. There are too many places that would love for the 3 of us to be seated at their establishment instead. I always wish restaurants well for their future because I know how hard it is to run one, but after our conversation in the car, we won t be coming back any time soon. A disappointment, that won t be forgotten.
My family and I went to the butternut tree for Mother s Day dinner. The food, service and atmosphere was phenomenal. The dishes were well curated and their philosophy behind using local produce and ingredients is truly inspiring. Our server Adam went above and beyond to make sure our experience was as perfect as it could be.Thank you Adam I could not recommend this restaurant enough, it is a must see in Edmonton. It s a great choice for your next special occasion!
Absolutely great experience we had here at Butternut Tree! I highly recommend the ahi tuna appetizer and the gnocchi was the best Ive ever had. Expertly made and delicious, will definitely be back
Gorgeous location with windows everywhere. However the food is lack luster and very small portions for the price. Also despite being mostly empty the staff seemed overwhelmed & disorganized. Another weird aspect was they only serve a limited brunch menu on Sunday s but hand out a full menu when you re seated.
I really enjoyed Butternut Tree but I have to put 4 stars, here is why: 1. I ordered a Beef Wellington with a poached egg for brunch. Wellington came out cut in half and it was raw, as you can see on a picture and one of the videos. I ordered it medium rare. I understand if they served it not cut that would be different story, but if you cut it and see that it is undercooked, you should not serve it. There were just 3 tables occupied at that time, so it was not cooked in a rush. It is hard to tell why it was served like that. 2. After bringing it to servers attention, they apologized and warmed it up (i suppose). You can see it in video where i cut an egg. 3. In terms of taste it was delicious and poached egg was cooked to a perfection (not many places can cook pached egg soft from first attempt). 4. Service was great deapite an error in Wellington itself. Menu looks really good and i would definitely come back to try the rest on the menu.
Lovely place, enjoyed the tasting menu and the view
Hours say till close, but we were turned away for drinks?
While the food was exceptional and the large windows provided a picturesque view, what set our experience apart was the extraordinary service we received. Our server was friendly, polite, and went above and beyond to accommodate members of our group with dietary and mobility restrictions. Thank you Zoe and the rest of the staff at the Butternut Tree for the experience, we had a wonderful time and I look forward to many more visits in the future.
I really wanted to like this place but the food wasnt great. We ordered 4 shareable dishes and were told that it would be enough but we both left the restaurant hungry and unsatisfied after paying a bill for more than $100 (no drinks, just food). The service was fine and the views are lovely but they didnt make up for the food.
We visited this restaurant for a special occasion and opted for the tasting menu. The ambiance was pleasant, and we were seated in a private room. However, the fireplace was not working, making the room uncomfortably cold. Additionally, several of the drinks we requested were unavailable. We chose the tasting menu with wine pairings to enhance our group experience. Our server, although lacking knowledge about the menu items and pairings, provided ample time for tasting all items. Unfortunately, a few dishes required the same wine pairings, which were not adequately explained. The serving style was inconsistent, with some items served individually and others family-style. Despite the service hiccups, most of the dishes were well-prepared and tasted good. Regrettably, some members of our group missed out on tasting certain dishes due to inaccurate portion information provided by the server. Furthermore, our server missed some of our orders, leading to a disjointed dining experience. Overall, our group was disappointed with the tasting menu experience. On a positive note, the restaurant accommodated us by informing about a price increase on the day of our booking. In addition, we were pleased they accommodated one of our friends gluten-free allergy within the tasting menu.
The worst fine dining I ever take. The restaurant declares their steak is ribeye, however it looks and tastes like striploin. I feel being cheated.
Our recent brunch experience was a stark departure from the outstanding dinners weve enjoyed in the past. Opting for this upscale venue for a special occasion, we were hopeful for a delightful meal and the stellar service we had grown accustomed to. Unfortunately, reality fell far short of our expectations. The food, once a highlight, was lackluster this time around. Dry cornbread and a disappointingly thin salmon toast left much to be desired, showcasing a significant drop in the overall quality we had come to expect. To add to this, we encountered a parking dilemma. Seeking guidance from a staff member who identified herself as the manager, we were assured that we need not worry about a parking meter issue. However, this advice led to a hefty parking ticket - $100. Despite acknowledging the error, the manager was quick to defer responsibility for this. This overall experience, marked by subpar food, indifferent service, and a frustrating encounter with the management regarding the parking issue, has left us disheartened. Its regrettable to witness a decline in the standards of a restaurant we once held in high regard. Unfortunately, we wont be considering a return in the future.
Everything about this place speaks quality. Service is excellent. Food is even better. Highly recommend.
First the good. The service was great as was the atmosphere. So were the cocktails. First course of ahi tuna was amazing. Great combination of flavours and well presented. As was the soup course. Then it went downhill. The bread basket cost an extra $10. The cornbread was dried out and the sourdough was heavy with a poor crumb. The pasta dish was tortellini that I suspect started out well enough. It appeared to have been left to dry out and was tough and cold. It was in a pesto that had the constituency of water. The rib eye was fine though one was blue rare & not medium rare. The starch was a potato strata that was so bitter it was inedible. I regret not informing the cooking staff but at this point did not have any confidence in their abilities. This would of been a poor meal at $20 but for $100 was unacceptable. I support fine dining and respect chefs but will never return to the Butternut Tree.
If youre looking for the next place you want to host an event/wedding I would 110% recommend The Butternut Tree. You will walk away with amazing memories, surrounded by incredible staff that treat you as family with the professionalism youre wanting. The food and beverages are Top Notch, planning was simple, enjoyable and well supported if I had any questions. This is the place you will truly want to relive the experience over and over again.
Always been a fan of what chef Downey was doing here. Love the use of Canadian ingredients, making them shine and sourcing from various regions. The space lends itself well to special events like weddings.
I wasnt surprised by the meal. It was good for the taste. I got diarrhea after eating. The service was impeccable and very nice and friendly. Sad that this was my experience. The cocktails were good though. Food
The food is lovely. Its always creative and something new to try. Weve been here a few times and regularly go for special date nights.
Enjoyed High tea! It was a wonderful experience! Unfortunately did not get our servers name, but he was excellent! Food
Wow! Excellent meal! Our friends are vegan, so we ordered the vegan tasting menu for 4. Enjoyed nine exquisitely presented, tasty plates! The flavors and variety were just amazing. Our server Mallory was knowledgeable, attentive and professional. All around it was one of the nicest restaurant meals weve ever had.
Awesome experience, not for all, delicious food, excellent service, nice viewing especially on nights.
Great food, great service. The dishes are pricey but you get what you pay for, the quality is excellent. Unfortunately this place is a hidden gem, that most people dont know about. They deserve to be a lot busier than they are. If I didnt live nearby I would have never heard of the butternut tree.
Quite enjoyed the food and experience. It s an evening out to relax.
Had a perfect valentines meal here, would highly recommend. The staff are very helpful and extremely friendly!
I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem with the best views of the legislature building and the river valley. My friend and I had brunch and it was a relaxing and pleasant experience. Mallory our server was so attentive and lovely. I had the mushroom toast and my friend had the quiche. Our lattes were well made. We wanted something sweet so they allowed us to check their dessert menu. The panna cotta looked like a work of art and tasted decadent as well. More people need to know about this restaurant. The ambiance, service and food quality are worth it.
Booked this high tea one month in advance. Total for this was $80 per person, so for the 2 of us, it was $160 (18% mandatory gratuity added). The server was nice, but I feel like he was overdoing it and over compensating for the disappointment coming next. We decided on the tea of both, which just tasted like grass (we chose the raspberryleaf and lemon herb). So we thought well hopefully the rest will be better. WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT that followed. The picture doesnt show the top layer, which was the hotcross buns and a carrot scone and there was a cheese cake cup as well. You can get better hotcross buns at cobbs, the carrot scone of mediocre, the cheese cake cup just tasted like cream cheese icing. The lavender marshmallow didnt taste like lavender. The speckled egg short bread cookie was the same quality as grocery store cookies. The profiterole was okay. The quail egg falafel was regrettable as was the burnt prosciutto pastry. The quiche was the size of a toonie and the cucumber(which was clearly made 2 days early as it was dry and wrinkly)with the smoked salmon and was miniscule. The only saving grace was the berry pavlova, but it can not compensate the $80 price tag. Also the server did not come check at all once he left the 3 tiered blah because Im sure he felt the disappointment. My first time here and definitely the last, I dont think Id ever been as disappointed as I was here at ANY other hightea/afternoon tea ever. If you are looking for mediocre service, okay venue and subpar food this place is for you!
Great food and service.
Locally sourced. Crazy ideas and an ever changing menu keeps things fresh. Vegetarian options: The vegetarian tasting menu is well balanced and still pairs well. Dietary restrictions: Always open to making your dining experience the best. Willing to work with restrictions as needed. Parking: Free parking underground.
I had the best brunch of my life here when they first opened, and had always wanted to go back. The menu changes often (perhaps seasonally), and I was very happy to see they finally added their prices to the online menu. They also stopped charging a $10 fee for reservations. If that s prevented you from visiting, as it has for me, now is the time! The dinner is incredible. I savoured every bite. The beef was cooked to perfection and just melted in my mouth. The dessert was equally as incredible. One shareable, two mains, two desserts, and two non alcoholic bevies was $145 before tip. Highly recommend, and of course it s a stunning view of the legislature and river valley.
I cannot say enough good things about The Butternut Tree! My partner and I went here for our anniversary and had a wonderful experience. Once we arrived the waiter greeted us with complimentary bubbles to celebrate our anniversary, which was a lovely way to start the evening. Prior to arriving we had booked the seasonal tasting menu (one vegetarian and one regular) and noted that there was a severe nut allergy. Each of the six courses that they served was incredibly flavourful and innovative. Our waiter was also fantastic and made sure to explain the intricacies of each dish and helped us find a wine that would pair nicely with numerous meals, as we chose not to have the optional wine pairing with our menu, as it was too much alcohol for us in one sitting. Overall, I would absolutely recommend the Butternut Tree to anyone whether youre celebrating a special occasion or just going out for a nice dinner. We hope to be back soon! Vegetarian options: The vegetarian options were so delicious and unlike anything Ive ever had before Dietary restrictions: Very willing and able to accommodate nut allergies Parking: Free underground parking after 6:00 pm
Looking for a tasting menu to celebrate a 40th birthday? Dont hesitate, just go.
Our group of 12 came in for a birthday dinner April 28th. Our server was Matt and we was an absolute beauty. Very knowledgeable, friendly and patient with our group. Servers like Matt leave a lasting impression on the restaurant. His passion for his job was not unnoticed. Lastly, the meals we received were amazing and we will be back very soon.
Just had brunch there for first time, have had dinner several times. Honestly one of the best restaurants in the city, execution was on point, best local ingredients, and some of the most pleasent serving staff you can find. Brought our 8 month old with us and went great.
We did the tasting menu, and it was a unique experience to be sure. Some of the dishes were out of the world good (the beef tartar, the bacon infused friend brussel sprouts, and especially the panna cotta were absolute stand outs). The cocktails are great. And the service was friendly and enjoyable, and they were very knowledgeable. The ambience is excellent. And I liked the concept of Canadian sourced food. The cost for the food was comparable to other fine-dining experiences. However, there were some nit-pick things: 1) We had reservations, and the couple in front of us didnt. When the place opened, they were seated at the nicer view seats of the leg, and we got the not as nice view near the bar. Like I wasnt going in expecting to get a nice view of the legislature, but a couple without a reservation shouldnt get it above someone who did make one, especially for a special celebration stated ahead of time. Since there was only two of us who had reservations, that should have been factored in. 2) The appetizers and dessert part of the tasting menu was incredible. But the mains were good but not great. Sometimes I felt like the four main dishes were a bit too forward with the use of salt. The duo of beef course was borderline inedible because of the heavy use of salt, but it was tender. And while some veggies were great charred, I didnt need every veggie to be. Some non-charred veg would have been nice for balance for the salmon and beef dishes. 3) Some of the tasting menu options were just too large. A bit less would have been preferred because I could barely make it to dessert. 4) It would have been nice for the waiter to ask if we wanted another bottle of sparkling water. He kept refilling our glass without asking, which was great. So we assumed it was complimentary (even though we were prepared to pay for a bottle). But then we got charged for three bottles at $20. It was still a great experience. But just a bit more deft of hand with regards to the salt and vegetable situation, and a bit more consideration given to those who made reservations, then this would have been a top-tier experience. I plan to try it again someday, but just order a la carte.
Thoroughly enjoyed their tasting menu with the wine pairing. Excellent food with friendly and helpful staff. Tip: get a window seat because along with an great dining experience, you can enjoy the view, people and trolley watch at the same time.. except in the winter.
Had an amazing chef s menu with wine pairing! Stunning food and great service! And they easily made accommodation for vegans! So wonderful, highly recommend for a nice night out!
Wow
The food here isnt anything special, I didnt taste it and say wow. Tiniest portions ever!! For how much I paid and how small amount of food I got, it should have been at least better than I can make at home. I never order dessert, but I did at this place because I was still hungry after eating 2 strips of steak and 4 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. The dessert was straight up bad. Mousse on top of a brownie hockey puck. Sprinkled with a heinous amount of hard caramel pieces. The mojito was good, the service not bad. Dont waste your time or money if you are considering this place to eat out.
Food was good
We were treated very special for our anniversary dinner! Our server, Matt, knew when and when not to come by our table. They locally source most of their menu items! Beef tartare on sourdough and ahi tuna to start. Flavour explosions. They accommodated us by putting the avocado on the side for allergy reasons. We had the caviar plate next. Wow! Sustainably sourced and so delicious! Main courses were lamb and salmon with a side of pork belly. The salmon with the dill sauce paired perfectly and the rice side was such a great combo of citrus, tomato and leek. The lamb with meatballs was so tender with an incredible tomato jam that I have never tasted before! I need to buy that! The pork belly was cooked so well. Crisp and tender at the same time. For dessert, the vanilla panna cotta was a nice light finish. The chocolate cake was a bit harder than we expected while the mousse on top was a delicious crusted caramel. And we took home two macaroons! We had wines to go with every course and were not disappointed in choices recommended by Matt. Chef Scott came at the end to say hello and congratulate us on our anniversary. We had a nice chat learning about the restaurant. What a great fine dining experience! Highly recommended!
Vegetarian options: Good Atmosphere
Went for our anniversary dinner and food & service was 10/10. Our server Adam was fantastic. Order the panna cotta for dessert-it s incredible!
Snobbish. For the price you would expect the food to taste incredible but it was just okay. Definitely dont go on an empty stomach since its typical small portions for high prices. Thats not a huge deal, but I did order a side of seasonal vegetables to round my meal out and 70% of it was onion ... We also brought a birthday cake and they wouldnt allow us to eat it there - something I have never experienced at any restaurant before in my life! Service was good. Drinks were tasty. But none of us felt like we would go back a second time.
A lovely venue overlooking the river valley. Unique food that is delicious and satisfying. The menu is small, but its still hard to choose as everything is so appealing. Fortunately, our party of three was large enough we could order one of each entry and share tastes. There was no entrée envy, just a desire to come back soon!
Spectacular service and excellent food. The rodigio salad was a bit on the acidic side but the salmon was wonderful. Our server was very kind and personable and gave us free champagne as we were celebrating our anniversary. Capped off the night with a walk on the high level which it is right next to
Update: Weve had brunch again at the Butternut Tree and it did not live up to our previous experience. Items were missed and not cooked properly (over-easy eggs were not in fact over-easy etc.). Despite the restaurant not being busy, there was a long wait for our dishes to arrive. The brunch menu doesnt offer dessert or a sweet option. We had previously gotten the cheese board but that was unavailable this last time. Ive revised my rating as a result. ----- Great location overlooking the Constable Ezio Faraone Park with views of the Alberta Legislature Building. Brunch is excellent! Highly recommend the Fjord Toast and the cheese board (if available as this is an item from the dinner menu). We have yet to stop by for dinner but Ill provide an updated review once we do.
This is one of our favorite places to go for Dinner / Date Night. We love it so much that we had our wedding in July at this venue. The food is incredible, the service is outstanding. I could not be happier with their Wedding Packages / Event coordination. I am so thankful that we found this place based on a recommendation from a friend. Thank you Samantha for making our Wedding Day smooth and being so thoughtful throughout the process. I truly appreciate all the details and coordinating that you did!
My wife and I were excited to be able to attend my nieces wedding and dinner at The Butternut tree this past September long weekend. From the minute that we entered the restaurant I knew that we were in for a treat of an evening and something to remember from the beautiful views in the dining room to the set up for the wedding ceremony I was impressed. Post ceremony we did the wedding photos in the park across the street and then headed back to the restaurant for an amazing dinner . We started with a shaved pear salad then a butternut squash soup (Amazing) , the main was a choice from a Duo of Alberta beef , braised beef short rib and beef strip loin with potato pave and oyster mushroom , or roasted halibut wild rice confit shallots pistou. The dessert obviously was wedding cake but with a twist it was banana Nutella pretzel , and it was also lavender lemon blueberry on 2 separate levels Phenomenal. We ended the night with dancing and a late night snack . I would like to say that the whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and was made so by the Butternut Tree management and staff . Completely professional and should be commended for the way they do things and I would fully recommend them for any function . To Chef Scott I like your style and the way that all of your recipes compliment each other fantastic job I tip my hat to you . Vegetarian options: I would like to say that I didn t partake in the vegan options but someone at my table did and it had me wanting to try it even though I had no idea what it was lol. They looked amazing and had me wanting to try them
We had the tasting menu and the food was fantastic. Wonderful servers, with a great view.
Decent place. I thought it would be a nicer venue, it had a little bit of a lower rent feel than you expect. Food was tasty, but as others have highlighted very small portions. The servers also for some reason try to present as polished, but still have a bit too casual of a vibe.
Went for a birthday dinner. The associate who was serving us was Rachel. As well we were greeted from a gentleman to seat us at our table. The food, where to start? We did the full tasting menu and its truly a great experience from start to finish. Once you start the dinner you can t get enough of each item. All the elements were very well presented, and the portion size was spot on. All elements of our meals had something special as for flavor and was balanced between one and another. What was a great touch as well, prior to starting the dinner, the associate asks you if you have any special diary restrictions. If so, what they are and goes to talk to the culinary team and comes back promptly with answers with a full description of what is being offered. A great touch. As a customer, you are aware what will be coming. The ambiance is fantastic as well, the view is great overlooking part of the city. If you wish to treat yourself to some preserves, they sell some on the way out of the restaurant. Truly recommend coming here for a meal. Vegetarian options: a solid menu for vegetarian options
We had a great experience at the Butternut Tree for our anniversary. I called ahead to ensure we had the best table in the house and we were also welcomed with some bubbles to celebrate. All of the food we had was great and our server was very knowledgeable about where the ingredients were sourced. We had a great experience and we would definitely come back!
Highly recommend The Butternut Tree Restaurant for business & personal meetings. Impeccable service standards and attention to every indelible detail. Outstanding presentation of each course, timed with perfection, in an unpretentious manner, and melded beautifully together to create an experiential masterpiece, with the rustic/contemporary design features of the space. Excellence throughout every facet. Look forward to the afternoon tea service on the next visit.
This is a special place. The food is presented like art. Very tasty. Nice view.
Was a nice place to try. Nice staff food was food but pricey
New years wedding hosted by the amazing staff at The Butternut Tree!! Chef provided a fantastic menu that was more creative than we could have expected! Service was exceptional by all staff! Wedding planning was a breeze and the team was there for us every step of the way!! The Butternut Tree entire team went above and beyond to make this the best day we could have dreamt of!!
Love the concept of the Canadian and local sourced ingredients. Service was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food was beautifully presented. Appetizers and shareables were excellent. The entrees were also very good but the portions were disappointing for the price. I understand that everything costs more but the portions were definitely underwhelming for dishes that were $36-44. Our table had a lovely view and it was a nice atmosphere until a noisy group joined the restaurant. The environment was instantly transformed to a noisy, cafeteria feeling which felt less high-end.
Had a dinner meeting. Food was fabulous. Service was great - attentive & responsive. Nice decor. Small meeting room.
The steak was too tough to eat. The crème brûlée was excellent. Appetizers were excellent. Food : 3/5
This has become our top special occasion restaurant. You get an excellent view of the legislature building in a comfortable modern restaurant. The food is expertly chosen and prepared and the quality of the ingredients is notable. The staff are always incredibly kind and informative. They have the ability to know exactly when to come by the table without intruding/interrupting your conversation.
I have a small real estate team in Edmonton and we decided to host our holiday party at the Butternut Tree this year. The private room was perfect. The view was amazing. The food perfect! And the service was spectacular. We laughed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you for the amazing experience. Parking: Easy to find parking.
We had our company Christmas party here and it was amazing! The food was tasty, server was very knowledgeable, and the overall experience was great. Food
Finally amazing service in YEG! Chef killed it as well but the service A+
Our go to restaurant for special events, anniversary, birthdays, etc fine dining that s unpretentious, focuses on local ingredients, menu that s updated seasonally to keep things fresh, with creative items that we haven t seen anywhere else. Hats off to Chef Scott for his creativity, innovation, attention to detail and quality. We ve never been disappointed. Highly recommend the chefs tasting menu for an unforgettable experience. Service is always impeccable. Great suggestions, prompt, and we feel well taken care of. Finally, the ambience, the view, very romantic. They re underrated for brunch as well, also amazing and can t go wrong. Parking: Heated underground parking, street meter parking. Wheelchair accessibility: Elevators and wide aisles, no steps.
Good food, good service and nice settings. They have free underground parking too, very convenient, especially in winter time.
Horrible service
Anyone looking to host an event here please rethink. As others have said, they are not accommodating, very difficult to work with and rigid. Because I questioned them on the extra rentals and hidden costs and policies that came out of nowhere I received an email response 5 days later with an excuse about Covid that they wouldn t allow us to book our 80 person private event unless we lowered to 50 guests and therefor wouldn t require rentals. I had said we owned banquet tables so didn t need the rentals of tables and would prefer a different style chair and that was the response 5 days later. Not happy they couldn t nickel and dime us I guess. So buyout cost still the same but limited our guest list which they knew was to be 80 guests. Their wedding brochure and contract clearly states that the guest can choose to coordinate rentals on their own and when I pointed that out they glazed over without accepting any responsibility for their oversight. They did not acknowledge that the contract or wedding brochure should be more clear and were perfectly happy allowing that miscommunication to leave potential clients unhappy. In fact they chose to double down on the issue. They do not let you choose the style of table or chairs or table cloths but they make sure to charge you the more expensive delivery and pickup rate of 99$ each way instead of 79$. Then they charge you their own 15% service fee for coordinating the rentals (as if you even have a choice) when you already pay 1750$ for their private event services off the top and automatic gratuity on the whole bill. So let me tell you upfront that they will charge you almost 900$ to add rentals to accommodate 22 additional guests. They initially agreed to a grazing table and although no restrictions changed to allow buffet style service they refused in subsequent meetings. We dodged a bullet by not booking with this venue. I imagine they would have not allowed the bride and groom to even toast each table or dance without a mask on. Would have been horrendous experience and photos. If you think any sort of practicality and rationality should be used in this current world, you should avoid this place more than the plague itself. Would give zero if I could. I agree with others that the staff come across as pretentious.
We visited for my partners birthday and could not have been more pleased. The view is amazing and the restaurant is well appointed to highlight the food. I had the tasting menu, and they had the vegetarian tasting menu an drink pairing. The wine pairings were not just amazingly well matched to the food, but also wonderful wines on their own. The service was quick, friendly, and very knowledgeable. The management checked in and was friendly and helpful. Not once did I feel imposed upon for pandemic rules, they were very friendly and helpful. The food was unbelievable, without a doubt the best meal Ive had in Edmonton. Everything was prepared perfectly and the food put in amazing flavor, texture and temperature combinations in an order that reminds me of an iconic musical arrangement. The chef has worked at world-renowned Michelin 3-star restaurants, and it shows. The ingredients were fresh, bright, beautifully arranged and prepared while also being seasonal and regional. We will definitely be back, and recommend if you are considering it, that you go as well! I dont say it often, but I wouldnt change a thing if I could have! All of these people in the reviews whining about not being able to walk around and talk to people while standing without masks on are completely callous and narcissistic. Have some compassion for the people forced to work in public during these hard times instead of being selfish and condemning them for trying to protect themselves and other guests.
One of the best meals Ive ever had. The tasting menu with wine pairings is very worth it
The food was incredible, the service was outstanding, and atmosphere was on point. 100% going back to try the next seasonal menu.
During my time at the butternut tree the food was incredible and left me wanting more. I did a five course meal myself but I should have gotten the ten. While the food was excellent the service was extraordinary, our server Malorie was terrific she was timely with our orders, kind to us as new comers to fine dining and very considerate.
Perfect.
I wish I couldve got the chance to try the food first and then come to the review section. But the truth is our reservation was cancelled twice in the past 3 months due to water tank issue. The first time we received a call on the way to the restaurant notifying us the reservation was cancelled, and today is around noon time. Both are on Friday night and it is hard for us to find a substitution plan. I dont really understand why the water tank always have issue on Friday but truly hope the restaurant could find a way to prevent it from happening again.
This restaurant has gone above and beyond in helping me book a private event at their venue. Samantha A. , in particular has been so lovely to work with and so helpful! Highly recommend!
Had the 5 course tasting menu and it ws incredible. Enjoyed the wine pairing as it introduced wines we had not had before. Love that it is all Canadian ingredients. Great food great service. Will definitely be back.
Absolutely blown away! To set the stage a bit, a friend and I were having post work drinks and trying to decide where to go for dinner I throughout Butternut Tree having seen their food on Instagram where it looked good, but also not having an understanding of the concept. So we pop-in and start getting vibes like this is not a normal place it did feel a wee bit judgey but anyhow got seated and our actual server could not have been better, really top notch! This is cooking on a whole different level I could not do justice to the quality to attempt to describe it; I will say that eating this food reminds me how technically good food can be amazing it s a tour de force of exquisitely thought out and prepared dishes. The way they are presented and explained to you is something I see lots of places that try and be fancy do, but really it only works when *this* much thought and care has been incorporated into the dish. We had the Tuna app, swordfish and beef in the main and bread pudding to finish the night off it was all of the highest quality and the best preparation. All in I am kinda happy that I didn t know what I was getting into when we walked in it made the experience all the more amazing.
Absolutely amazing!! We got the 5 course chef tasting menu. All of the dishes were well composed and everything on the plate complimented each other. The team (back of house and front of house) are very talented and know exactly how to make you feel special. The miniature printed menu at the end to take home was an extra little detail that is so appreciated. Always nice to take a keepsake home. Everything was reasonably priced considering the work and effort that goes into sourcing local ingredients and producing such elegant dishes. I am so excited to come back again soon and try the menu out some more!
What a view! The food, service + hospitality is world class, what a memorable experience, thank you!
Had very high hopes after some friends recommend butternut tree to us, unfortunately our experience was quite disappointing. We ordered the 7 item tasting menu plus one dish. The first two courses where the AMUSE BOUCHE a tiny little cheese puff pastry and the Gougère MOUSSE which was a cracker with chicken liver both dishes very tiny and disappointing. Dish three was BRUSSEL SPROUTS which where ok at best. Followed by GNOCCHI which in my opinion was over cooked and a little mushy. The SABLE FISH with a type of Canadian wild rice was excellent and the only dish that kept me from giving this place one star, The pallet cleanser had popcorn in it which was a first for me. The Beef was a tiny strip of sirloin which was underwhelming and came with a barley and red pepper side which was honestly unpleasant and I only finished it because I was still very hungry at this point of the meal. the LE CHEVRONNÉ wasn t noteworthy enough to bother reviewing and the dessert was a tiny brownie type dessert which was alright. Our meal took 4 1/2 hours for 8 dishes, the chairs are incredibly uncomfortable. tiny unimpressive portions and just an overall the most disappointing dinning experience I have ever had. And I left hungry.
Michelin Chef Scott Downey and Chef de Parte made this one of the most memorable dining experiences imaginable. It was exactly what I envisioned and can not wait for the next time for them to create our meals!!
High tea honestly pretty mediocre. Focus seems to be more on things that SOUND fancy and local, but without enough concern about if flavors work together or are good. Everything was either sweet or greasy, with not enough savory/salty flavors. The scones were basically like pie crust, too fatty, and then the clotted/whipped cream on the side turned out to actually just be butter. Like, those scones dont need more fat.
Barely edible. The finger sandwiches bread was hard and stale. The scones were dense and oily, and the cream for the scones did not taste like cream. The crust on the tarts was burnt. The rest of the dessert items were pure sugar and zero taste. $65+ for each person. It felt like I was being scammed. If you want high tea, please go to the Fairmont. Comparable pricing but you actually get food there. The people giving five-star reviews here are either too generous or fake reviewers.
We held a business function here and it was wonderful. The food was exceptional. Thank you!
Really enjoy this restaurant. The view of the legislative building and the river valley is amazing. Service is great and the food is amazing. Every visit is never the same and each dish served is unique and well thought of.
From start to finish, a great experience. Friendly and genuine staff with Adam, our waiter, being knowledgeable about all aspects of the dishes. The Sablefish and Beef entrees were 5 star. Great views in this restaurant from any seating area. Excellent- Well definitely be back.
Went for Mothers Day high tea (my first Mothers Day) with my husband and our 9 month old. They do not have high chairs or changing tables in the bathroom. This is 2022, disappointed that a restaurant can not accomodate mothers, especially on Mothers Day.
The Butternut Tree staff, service and food are amazing! They went above and beyond to make our wedding day easy and the attention to detail is unmatched. The Butternut Tree stuck with us through multiple postponed wedding dates due to COVID-19 and were accommodating and gracious through it all. I can t recommend them enough; if you re thinking of having your wedding or event there, don t hesitate! Thank you Chef Scott and team!
The best place for a fine dining. I had a wonderful experience and got a extraordinary service. Love the oysters and beefs!
Service was impeccable! I loved the view, tables offer a great way to people watch. The food is fantastic, the level of detail put in by the chefs is amazing. I will definitely come back. I can t believe I ve been sleeping on this for the last 5 years.
We chose The Butternut Tree for our small, intimate brunch wedding, and we could not be happier with our choice. The venue itself is stunning, and the team at The Butternut Tree is experienced at hosting weddings. Samantha, the wedding coordinator, was responsive and easy to work with, and helped to make sure all the details were looked after and everything was executed flawlessly on our wedding day. Chef Scott and team were happy to accommodate our brunch theme, and the service was impeccable. The staff are warm and attentive, and really made sure that our guests were well taken care of. I don t have enough good things to say; we were so pleased with how everything came together and grateful to Chef Scott, Samantha and the whole team at The Butternut Tree for playing such a big part in our day.
Amazing experience at the Butternut Tree. Our table did the 7 course tasting menu and each course was better than the last. An amazing variety of Canadian fare combined with excellent service and tasty cocktails. Everything is sourced from somewhere within Canada down to the spices used. There was a little bit of everything in the tasting menu, from smoked asparagus, east coast fried oysters, halibut with ancient grains, duo of beef and everything adorned with little local gems like edible flowers, spruce tips, morel mushrooms, the list was endless. Worth every penny and definitely a fun evening out.
We attended a wedding here and it was amazing. The staff was top notch and the food was so delicious! If I could give them ten stars I would.
My wife and I were here for our anniversary. Friendly service, delicious food with unique ingredients. Tickled our palates with cucumber jalapeno juice, well be back.
We recently celebrated our wedding at The Butternut Tree and could not be happier with our choice to do so. The entire team made the wedding planning process so easy from our first meeting, to custom designing a menu for us, to taking care of us throughout our wedding day, to picking up our decorations the day after - everything was taken care of. Our guests raved afterwards about the food, the drinks, the space, and the service. We would highly recommend The Butternut Tree for anyone planning an event or just a special evening out. We cant wait for many delicious returns!
Proudly exceptional. The Butternut Tree is an incredible display of elevated Canadian cuisine. We decided to order everything all at once and share. We left it up to the server and kitchen to send the dishes out as they saw fit which pleased them and benefited us immensely. The service was above and beyond. Our server, Adam, was knowledgeable, friendly, kind, comforting, and overall made the experience more than exceptional. He was patient, genuine and far from pretentious. To start we had oysters and caviar which was a perfect appetizer. The oysters were balanced with salt from the ocean and a white wine sauce, that was on the side, bringing the beautiful flavours together. There was a selection of three different caviar types. They ranged from creamy to salty and each worked perfectly with the shredded egg white and yolk. Then came the bison tartare which was topped with a raw egg yolk, cured egg yolk, greens, and cabbage that couldn t have been more balanced with the meat and crackers. Our main to share was the beef duo and both were, of course, cooked perfectly. The shaved and fried garlic was a new experience and one we ll be craving for a while. To end the night we had the cheese board which had two gorgeous Canadian cheeses, one soft and one semi soft / hard. Both were incredible in their own way and went wonderfully with everything on the plate. Along with the cheese we decided to get the ice wine fleet which was incredible and impressive. Adam explained the process of ice wine and was excited to be able to teach us about the specific glasses. In conclusion we could never possibly recommend this place more. It makes one proud to be a Canadian and experience such an elevated menu right from our own backyard.
Cleverly hiding behind the pretentious remark of using only locally-sourced ingredients, The Butternut Tree offers nothing but abysmally substandard dishes. If one had to decompose the price they pay here, it would simply be for the location, heavily contrived fancy atmosphere to boast preposterous luxury on ones social media, and the restaurants delusional sense of pride and confidence in the services and food provided. First and foremost, the appetizers were stale, bread with a texture of a soggy cardboard box, left to dry for several days. The main dishes were drenched in salt to add flavour. Every inch of the steak was soaked with salt, I felt as though the dish was marinated under the ocean for months. Their self-imposed limitations on the available ingredients are acting as a double-edged sword, simultaneously deteriorating the quality of the dishes and luring customers susceptible to such marketing gimmick. Perhaps The Butternut Tree is the manifestation of our concurrent luxury-driven society, where the actual quality of the service for which the customer had paid, is no longer relevant, as long as ones self-gratification is achieved through social media attention. My visit to the Butternut Tree was not only disappointing, it was a wake-up call to reflect on our decisions made under irrational self-justification. Not entirely sure what makes any of the food served here Canadian. Let us not deceive ourselves with some false sense of patriotism; it is just as embarrassing as calling poutine an original Canadian food. Yes, french fries with gravy and cheese on top. 1/5.
Recently attended a wedding at Butternut Tree and from the start to finish it was amazing! Staff were so nice and accommodating! Food was excellent! Appetizers were phenomenal and entrees were so flavourful and well balanced! Everything from the decorations to the food and drinks were excellent! Hats off to the chef and staff it was a night to remember. I hope to return soon . RK Lake Country, BC
Very disappointed. We ordered the pork and duck as main dishes. The strong stink smells make me wonder whether they prepared the meat properly. Without the local and long explanation, I wouldn t believe this is from a really expensive restaurant.
Entirely unpleasant experience. Im fine with paying for a very expensive dinner but left soured when the food is completely underwhelming for $50 a plate. The drinks were bad, and the service was on paper good, but we felt uneasy around our server. I usually dont bother to review a place but I would strongly encourage others to try somewhere else instead.
Well first the serving staff are a delight. Then the duck was fabulous, and weirdly enough the corn was delicious. Better than corn has any right to be. Quite happy with the dessert as well.
Great place! Loved it! Great servers, very caring! Unique place, with incredible food! This is the place where you will enjoy the atmosphere, the food and have a wonderful time!
Outstanding dining experience in Edmonton. Great menu with dedication to all Canadian food and wine. Very high quality meals. Fresh ingredients and food portion size.....not too big. Menu is short and focussed. So is the wine list. Food and wine choices provide the opportunity to try something toy havent tried before. Duck was great. So was the lobster. So was the pannacotta dessert. Servers were cheerful, professional and knowledgeable. Meals for all diners at our table arrived simultaneously. Thats a sign of thoughfulness about the dining experience desired by customers. Good value for money. Highly recommend and will return when next in Edmonton.
We got married at The Butternut Tree earlier this year, and could not have asked for a better experience. From the first tour of the venue (stunning), to the menu tasting (possibly the second best day of my year), to the wedding itself (so incredible and stress free), the team took care of us. Samantha was extremely responsive to any emails, and she and the rest of the team handled all set up and take down, following exactly what I had asked for. Booking the Butternut Tree for our wedding was easily the best decision we made, and everything else fell into place after that. Our friends still talk about the food and drinks we had, and how wonderful the evening was. We also had stopped in for dinner around 2 months after booking the venue, just to see if we were happy with our choice before it was too late. We didnt actually tell them we were coming, or that we had our wedding booked at the restaurant, as we wanted a true unbiased experience. Our dinner was fabulous, and we still talk about it to this day.
Great food. Pricy, but you get what youre paying for. The 7 course meal was fantastic.
The tasting menu is fantastic
My partner and I had absolutely great experience at Butternut tree from the start to finish. Phenomenal dining experience from service to the food. The tasting menu is seasonal and changes based upon the availability of local produce/protein. Definitely will be coming back to enjoy another tasting menu. Also on a side note, you can order regular tasting menu and vegetable tasting menu together (not one over the other). I also appreciated the attention to detail on the presentation of the food. They also use local ceramic dinnerware, which looked amazing.
I recently went here for date night. Really cool restaurant. The food and service is amazing... a cut above one might even say. I had the pear salad and Bison steak with a BC sourced Pinot Noir. Like many fine dining experiences the portions are a bit smaller so if you are hungry a buffet might be a better option. I hadnt eaten all day and have been known for having a large appetite and I was satisfied having an entree, a main, and sharing a bottle of wine. The servers are knowledgeable and can tell you all sorts of stories about the food and wine offerings. An overall pleasant experience. Likely to spend around $100+ per person with food and drink but well worth the experience. Vegetarian options: They offer a vegetarian tasting menu that is sometimes better than the regular tasting menu. Parking: Free heated underground parking just let the host or server know your license plate number and its taken care of.
Food was mediocre and the prices were high.
Malerie was an adorable fantastic server. She really knew her stuff! Came here for a birthday dinner and had the omnivore and vegetarian seven course meal (more like 10 course though with the amuse bouche and palette cleanser). Delicious, 10/10
The food is really goood and the location is great. However the service isn t great. We were offer a corner table with no view inspite of empty table. She also missed on taking the tea order which was a part of high team menu. I felt a bit of racism feeling in here :/
I had a really bad experience with the owner of The Butternut Tree. I had paid for a High Tea event on December 20th 2020 which I was excited to go to. Unfortunately the government of Alberta put everything back on lockdown just before the event was to take place so it was cancelled. I reached out to the owner to see if i could re-schedule or receive a refund. The owner indicated 2 additional dates I could re-schedule for, both of which I would be out of town for as I work a rotational schedule up north. He also indicated that i could receive curbside pickup which just didnt make much sense as I was charged an automatic 18% gratuity with my ticket confirmation. Also, to be honest it was the experience of High Tea that I wanted to attend in person. After politely indicating that I couldnt make any of those subsequent events and declining curbside pickup, I asked if they could process a refund. The owner adamantly refused, and in my subsequent back-and-forth emails kept indicating that all ticket sales were final and non-refundable. I was more than aware of their cancellation policy which indicated that there would not be refunds for cancellations (on the part of the buyer), but I couldnt understand how he could withhold my money if the event hadnt taken place. No amount of reasoning with him worked and in the end I had to go to my credit card company to initiate a charge-back. Even then, he made the process so difficult as he fought the charge-back. Thankfully I kept my email transactions as well as copies of the cancellation policy indicated on the ticket. The money was eventually returned by the CC company. If you happen to visit the restaurant, the food is good and presented very well. However buyer beware about paying for any event prior to receiving the service with the Owner (Scott Downy). His inability to be reasonable given the circumstances and withholding of my money while not providing the service indicated was very close to theft in my opinion. I unfortunately wont be back to his restaurant as it was quite un-called for.
Had delicious gluten free high tea and I already cant wait to go back again. Food was great and staff were very friendly
Excellent tasting menu during the weeknight. An early reservation gets you a table beside the windows. The Constable Ezio Faraone Park lights up in the evening, makes a great view. If youre not having the tasting menu, the braised maitake mushrooms was excellent. Good value for the money.
Blew my wifes mind with a wonderful mothers day high tea. Presentation was amazing, food was amazing, and the mother of my daughter is amazing!
Wanted to treat my mom to a nice high tea for Mother s Day and had heard wonderful things about the restaurant but had never been. The presentation of the boxes were nice, but the savoury sandwiches were really salty, the sweet items that had pastry/crusts were soggy and the fruit she received was a bunch of grapes with some missing. I was really excited for mom to have a delicious Mother s Day meal, but sadly this was a disappointment especially at $65/person, plus tax, service fee & tip. An email the next day to fill out a survey about the high tea experience wasn t even followed up on given the disappointment of the meals. This was definitely not worth the money or time.
First restaurant weve got to sit down for this year and, I have to say, it was it was a great experience. The chefs tasting menu was out of this world with authentic Canadian ingredients only, but what thoroughly blew my mind was the service. Our waitress was the most attentive and personable employee Ive ever had the pleasure to deal with. Plus the view from our table couldnt be beat.
You will always have surprises here!
Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience yesterday! We felt very welcomed the moment we stepped inside. The receptionists smile comforted us as it was our first time. We were ushered to our seats with a beautiful view. The staff were attentive. We had an a la carte menu. We really enjoyed everything, especially the handmade crisps on a cheese board; sauce with our main course; freshness of the vegetables; cocktail drinks; and the heavenly desserts! Also, special compliments to Chef Scott Downey. Thank you for a pleasant evening!
My wife and I had an absolutely outstanding experience here tonight. In fact not only did we come with high expectations, based on reviews and write-ups, but those expectations were easily exceeded. We will definitely be back soon, and will be bring people back with us for sure. We definitely look forward to trying the Chefs gourmand tasting menu with our next experience.
We love The Butternut Tree! We had our wedding here because of the view and the food. We will be coming back for our anniversaries because we had an amazing experience for our wedding. All of our guests were raving about our choice of venue and food.
Wow. What a fabulous evening. I took my fiancé here for her Birthday, she was grinning from ear to ear. The dining room is GORGEOUS, with almost floor to ceiling windows throughout, we had a great view of the Legislature building and the sunset over the river valley. They aim to provide food that is only cultivated in Canada. The dishes were very beautifully presented, and the flavor combinations were unique, surprising and delicious. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. So pretty much everything you would expect from high end culinary experience. The prices were also very reasonable. Would highly recommend this restaurant to any foodie or for anyone looking to wow their significant other. Enjoy!
Before The Butternut Restaurant arrived. It was still the Copperpot Restaurant. One afternoon while working. A Semi Truck got stuck under the 97th Ave Bridge. And it was during afternoon peak hour service. Where everyone was rushing home from work.
Went here for my anniversary and got a free glass of bubbles and it happened to be the first time my fiancé has been in Canada, so why not take him to an all Canadian restaurant. We had the chef s tasting menu and let me just say- WOW! This menu wowed us, opened us up to new foods and try amazing dishes. Our personal favourite was the bison tartare- it was delicious. We were very full by the end as well. We also tried two of their non alcoholic drinks and they were both different and delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant to any couples! The customer service was amazing too.
Easily one of the best dinners Ive had in Edmonton. Spent 3 wonderful hours enjoying a fantastic 10-course curated meal with matching wine. Expensive, but so delicious and memorable. Wonderful service and great memories
Had a Good time
What a wonderful restaurant! We had such an amazing experience, our server Malorie was amazing and so knowledgeable. The 10 course and wine pairing was an incredible culinary experience.
Amazing experience! We had the 6 course and it was great! The bison was my favorite! Great service and beautiful view. Highly recommended!
Lovely culinary experience, top notch fine dining and service with a local perspective.
We had the chefs 10 course tasting menu. It was very good.
A very good tasting menu, in it were two perfect bites with the mussel on a potato shell. Service was very good.
DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR A PRIVATE EVENT. Had a awful experience with this restaurant. We had booked a corporate event and rented out the whole venue. The staff and owner were unaccomodating and difficult to plan the event with. The general manager Jillian seemed to hold some sort of bias against our group and the staff as a whole was highly pretentious. Beware of hidden fees and exaggerated rental costs. This restaurant charges a premium but does not operate in that way. The staff were passive aggressive in dealing with our guests mostly due to masking rules. We were all aware of masking rules and not opposed to them. But what I didnt know was how aggressive and militant they were about enforcement. The staff would pester guests if they stood up to greet someone or pulled down there mask for a sip of their drink or to eat. It became very abrasive and ruined our event. It felt as though the staff was prepped by their manager or owner to act in this manner towards us. Majority of the guests consisted of health professionals that were happy to wear a mask when appropriate. We also felt like we were spoken to in a condescending manner many times throughout the evening. When I approached the owner Scott Downey he seemed uninterested in resolving any issues. As soon as the final invoice was paid they terminated all communications which tells me they dont really care about customer satisfaction. While the venue is beautiful and the food was good.. I would never book an event here again nor recommend to anyone else.
Great service, atmosphere and experience - if you can get over the small amount and relatively subpar quality of food given the price you pay ($65-80/person and you get 1 unique item on the picture you see). The bacon muffin was very dry and crumbly and you definitely need the butter they provide. The cinnamon bun had good flavor but the texture of the dough was borderline cooked. While I liked the savory treats I wish there was more of it. I think you need to eat lunch first before coming for high tea. Ive only been to art of cake for high tea so thats my bar. To be honest I would just go to Ernest at NAIT and try their Tiffin menu for $20. Yeah its not high tea but at least you wont get to feel how I feel right now. Bummed out. :/
Went to a Christmas party at this venue. For industry trying to get back on its feet , I couldnt believe the lack of professionalism from some of the staff. There were several times I basically stood up to greet friends and was instantly told to put on my mask. I had the head bartender staring at me while I greeted friends or had conversation while I was standing mask less which was in the same spot I was sitting. I saw the same bartender watching people like a hawk who were doing shots and instantly on them about masks before the drink even left their mouths. This was also the general consensus from most of the guests. I understand the use of masks but this was over the top and ruined the night. I think there needs to be some common sense used and not have hostility towards your guests. I would not recommend this venue.
We attended a private event at the Butternut Tree this past weekend and the experience was extremely disappointing. Understanding that the restaurant had to adhere to safety measures and masking requirements, the treatment from the staff and management was quite frankly, atrocious. This was a private party - we all showed proof of vaccination upon entry, prepared to follow the restaurants rules but also, dare I say, we were excited to have a great evening with friends and colleagues in a beautiful, high-class restaurant. Unfortunately, our party was NOT met with the same high-class standard or service that Im sure it strives to be. We literally felt tied to our seats, unable to simply stand up to talk to a friend or have a drink without immediately being asked to put on our mask when it was only pulled down momentarily! This is an unprecedented and difficult time for all of us, living in a time with restrictions yet trying to adjust to a new normal. But at the end of the day, we are reasonable people and guests at this restaurant. Many of us are business owners ourselves and faced with the same challenges of running a business during a pandemic while upholding our customer service standards. There is a way to balance the two with the utmost professionalism and tact, which WAS NOT displayed by the staff and management at the Butternut Tree. Extremely disappointed. Such an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided. I would not recommend this restaurant at all.
Attended an event here over the weekend and will not return due to lack of hospitality.
We joined the High Tea last Sunday and were really impressed with the whole experience. The family was hesitant to still make the outing because of the pandemic but the cleanliness of the restaurant and vigilance of the staff eased our worries immediately. The baked goods and the winter themed cocktails were exceptional; the only issue we had was finding the restaurant as there is no clear sign outside. All in all a great experience
Bad food and very rude staff with lack of respect for the patrons
Absolutely a fantastic experience! My girlfriend and me went there for an anniversary dinner, the atmosphere and service is the top of the line!
I recommend this restaurant to everyone. The entire dining experience was fantastic. The flavours of food and drinks were outstanding. Best meal Ive ever had. Did the vegetarian tasting menu, with wine pairings. They said they can make it vegan if desired as well. Loved thats its all Canadian sourced, including the dishes. I will need to go back as the menu changes often and cant wait to see what else the chef is inspired to create (even though I would hate to not have the amazing dishes I did last night again).
Excellent food, awesome front of house staff and great ambiance.
Had dinner for the first and last time at this restaurant. Upon arrivival my gf and I were sat at a 4 person table while there were several tables for 2 that were available, so that didnt make much sense. We decided to each order the angus steak. When the entrees arrived we noticed how small the portions were but didnt let it bother us as we expected the flavors to be the focal point. The steaks were both very tough to cut into and mine had a thick vein of gristle running through the middle of the cut that made almost a third of the steak inedible. The side dishes were also not very flavourful so the whole meal was extremely disappointing. If I pay $52 for a steak it could at least be of decent quality. When I brought it to the waiters attention he seemed offended and rolled his eyes as he took off to the kitchen. He came back and said the chef is very temperamental(as if thats an excuse) and cant be responsible with how the meat is butchered. He then left my table and did his best to avoid us until he brought dessert menus and said they would comp us a dessert. I made the mistake of ordering dessert which again was tiny, a coffee cake that didnt taste like coffee at all with a tablespoon of ice cream that didnt really go well with the cake. We actually had a laugh at how poor the food was and the excuses the waiter had given us. My biggest regret other than making the reservation in the first place was giving any tip at all to that waiter. Oh well, lesson learned. I would honestly not eat here for free.
My boyfriend and I stopped in tonight for a cocktail after a show. We sat at the bar and had an amazing time chatting with our bartender & server. We appreciated the opportunity to speak to the staff about their love of drinks and food, their culinary experience, and dedication to their craft. I had the Autumn Fizz and absolutely loved it. Fresh, bubbly, and just the right amount of sweet, this cocktail only left me with the desire of a second round. We ordered the cheese plate and the chef was able to accommodate our late order. Everything was fresh and delicious and paired well with our drinks. All food and drink are Canadian grown/made. We appreciate the local-focused approach and dedication to fresh, delicious food & beverage. Until next time!
Great location and view
We went for our anniversary and were brought a complimentary glass of bubbly right after we sat down. The food was beautifully prepared and every dish had something that surprised us a bit, such as finding out how much a big slice of cabbage could the best part of your meal. It was a great experience both with the food and the service and we really look forward to going back.
Delicious food - uses ONLY ingredients found in Canada! A bit pricey but worth it!
Beautiful photographic dishes but i wouldnt recommend eating this at all.
Went to the Butternut Tree for the second time yesterday (July 2020), and everything was stellar. The focus on Canadian sourced ingredients means a few unique items youve probably never tried, but they manage to really make the ingredients shine. Service was excellent, the staff really knew the menu and provided good suggestions and the food was spectacular. Cant wait to come back for a third try.
AMAZING food and AMAZING service. Staff was great at explaining all the plates and where the ingredients came from
Great food service and ambiance would 10/10 reccomend
A beautiful night out...tasting menu with wine pairing is a special trip through Canadian ingredients and is of fantastic value when you consider that youll have the opportunity to enjoy 6 courses and 6 wines. Fancy but not fussy. Excellent service. Ambience is lovely with the legislature building in the foreground. In Edmonton, youll be hard pressed to find a more intellectual and inspired menu. We are lucky to have Chef Downey choose Edmonton as the background for his celebration of all things Canadian.
Interesting place. Definitely worth a visit because of the restrictions they place on themselves. If youre a foodie that likes contemplating aspects of a dish while eating its a must go. If you just want a tasty meal, thats a hard one. Plated nicely and if you havent dabbled in meals that take into account molecular gastronomy its worth going to. Ive gone a few times because its an experience worth having with certain people, but personally not a place Id take everyone. Service is excellent, space is sparse but interesting. Havent been a fan of their brunch(to be fair Im not really a brunch guy though)to me dinner is where the magic happens.
Had takeout from here for the first time tonight. Truly magical food, the chef cooks with a deliberate, whimsical touch. The celeriac noodles were otherworldly and the carrot pureé thats served with the bison short rib made me question my existence. Thanks so much!
The Butternut Tree is my absolute favorite for fine dining in Edmonton! Ive only been here twice, but was equally impressed both times. On my most recent visit, my boyfriend and I ordered the 6-course tasting menu to celebrate a special occasion. Our servers explained what was in each dish as they set them down on our table. Great attention to detail was given to harmonizing the flavors and plating the dishes. Not only did the food look appealing, but it tasted amazing as well. The edible flowers were unreal! The halibut was cooked to perfection - I would order it as an entree next time. Five stars for food and service!
Attended a wedding reception here and the food and service were fantastic! Our server Tim was exceptional and lovely to talk to. Well be back!
Been here 2x..service is good.. best views of the ledge building..very expensive restaurant.. i dont really care about the prices if the food is good.. first bill was 280ish for 2 people. with cocktails.. no wine.. food wasnt very good.. portions are very small.. decided to try it again on canada day.. was a set menu with wine pairings.. 13 course.. bill was 1100$ for 4 people.. the best thing on the menu was the soup.. i felt bad for the other couple who had to split this bill as you could tell they were not impressed at all.. will not be going back..
Amazing food! Beautiful restaurant! Love the staff!
Fantastic venue with beautiful river valley views. The food is also wonderful.
Tasty food, great staff and great vibe. It has a nice view
From the time we were greeted at the door, server was introduced to us, concept / vision of the chef was explained, menu options described and then to eating, everything was exceptional, what a fantastic evening. A very big thankyou to the entire staff for making our first visit awesome, definitely will return
My second visit and the food and service were as brilliant as the first, adding a notable improvement to the hostess and coatcheck service.
The wine night pairing with Dirty Laundry was amazing! The dishes matched with the 5 wines were unique and delicious. They all paired very nice with the wine selected for that course. Highly recommend trying this restaurant.
Phenomenal meal! Every ingredient is from Canada and flavors are paired for a true culinary experience.
Great canadian food experience.
Great service and of course great food. Very recommended.
everything was delicious
Excellent food and service
