137 Martin Grove Rd, Etobicoke, ON M9B 4K8, Canada
the old adage “don’t judge a book by looking at the cover” guaranteed 98% of those who walked up would keep walking.. DON’t !!! as someone else posted be prepared to wait but it’s defo worth it …order early went back 2 days in a row :)
I've lived here all my life they haven't renovated since the 70s or even before that it's all cash money so I'm sure they don't report it to the CRA lousy food lousy customer service they should close down or at least give someone else a chance
I really wanted to like this and there were some successes. Overall kinda mediocre. Food was hit and miss with some dishes tasteless. Customer service was horrendous. Value for money was good overall and vegetables were super fresh. If I went again we’ll avoid certain dishes and recommend you do too but there are some wins. - Spring rolls: $1 each: these are terrible. Small. Tasteless. Clearly frozen and bought in. 1/10 - Vegetable Lo Mein: actually really nice! Best part of the meal. 9/10 - Tofu in black bean sauce: completely tasteless and watery: 1/10. - Chicken fried rice: a little light on the amount of chicken and the rice was a bit sticky, but it was a hit overall with our family: 7/10 - Bok Choy: great texture but completely tasteless even though it is fried with garlic. Can’t hate it though as it was cooked well. 7/10. - Beef with vegetables: Very watery but, tasted nice. 8/10. Now, let’s talk about customer service. It’s horrendous! I got yelled at down the phone and then yelled at again when I came to pick up the order. I actually don’t care but, it’s not professional. 2/10. Forget all of the above… the restaurant is absolutely filthy. There is dirt everywhere. If the front is so gross, who knows what’s in the back. 1/10. Advice for management: put someone polite on order taking. Improve the quality of your frozen fried foods that you bring in. And give the front of house a wipe down.
They use to be good, now the food is not even good for my pets (I love them and I wouldn’t do this to them); my daughter literally took a bite and immediately spit it out, tried to fix it with some soy sauce but it didn’t work. I order 2 chicken balls combos, the rice was tasteless and the chicken balls smell funny and were soggy. When my husband went back to ask for the money back, the rude lady said what other restaurant gives money back if the food is not good? Perhaps owners that cares for their clients and their business? I been living in Etobicoke for over 20 years and this is the worst experience I ever had in local restaurants. I really believe that a supermarkets that prepares Chinese dishes are way better than this.
Really really disappointed. Ordered the lunch special. It’s absolutely horrible, absolutely no flavor. 20 bucks wasted for two orders for some flavourless rice and soggy chicken balls. I returned and politely asked for a refund since the quality wasn’t up to par and was told she didn’t understand what a refund was and that she didn’t know of any other place that gave refunds when the customer wasn’t happy. Beware poor quality and poor service to boot. It’s too bad you can’t give 0 stars.
Terrible service. Husband grew up eating here, it was great two years ago but i dont know whats going on but the lady that works there was extremely disrespectful. They ripped me off with the sizing of the fried rice. Even if you changed your portions, out of decency you would try to explain things respectfully to your customer and apologize for the dissatisfaction, Not get yelled at and then hung up on because i am questioning why the portion changed. I paid close to 100 dollars for basically a meal that could feed only 2 people when i ordered enough for a family of 6. Save your money there are better Chinese restaurants for your buck BELIEVE ME. I know inflation, but this order i straight up got robbed!!!!! PS. Ive worked in customer service for over 10 years. I just want to say that the gentleman working there is probably even more busy then that lady answering the phone because he has to cook and clean and answer the phone, and he was respectful. All these reviews that sympathize with the lady and say shes busy… shes truly not, the owner has to literally do her job for her cause she doesn’t have even basic manners to answer a phone and represent the restaurant. Its truly a shame.
Grew up eating from this place. Canadianized Chinese food is hit and miss and different for everyone. Me and my family and friends really like Far East. The lo mein is more pasta-y with a mild flavour. The deep fried wontons are the best in the GTA. I suspect there is some lard in the oil they fry them in. Yum!
Know what you want, ignore the deteriorating sign, ignore the decor, and you will enjoy the food. Depending on who is taking the order niceties may be a little off. I have never seen insects or droppings and the food is always good. But sometimes stingy on the meat. I'm not a regular but I've been going for years. It's also very affordable. Single meal is $6 at lunch and $7 after. I'll take this over chain fast food any day.
The ONLY place I will order Chinese take out.
Food was bad Never again there
Just ate a delicious meal of chicken balls, mushroom fried rice, and chicken chop suey. Other Chinese food restaurants closer to my house, but I make the trip for the chicken balls.
Fantastic!! Great friendly service, great tasting food, portions are a perfect size !10+
I wish if I could rate 0. The lady in front ended up saying me go elsewhere while I was deciding what to get. Don t ever visit this place Service
No chicken in the chicken fried rice and tasteless and tiny piece of chicken in the chicken balls. It s gone downhill and more expensive for less!
Decent food. Chicken balls have a weird oily taste now, and no more chicken wings boo. Been going on and off for 30+ years, same decor!
Portions are smaller, and no pick up discount anymore. Ive eaten here for 40 years. No more. Food is not good, small portions, lady up front disrespectful. I was offered no refund when I returned uneaten bad tasting food. What a shame it was so good for so many years
If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I placed an order, with one of the rudest people Ive ever spoken to on the phone, and the total came to around $85 dollars. I was told cash only at least three times and that was fine. When I was adding up the cost it was coming out to more than $10 more than what I expected. I called back, to double check the cost, she raises her voice at me and tells me to cancel the order. I tried to say I was just checking the prices and I still wanted the food but after trying to talk to her I realized this wasnt going to happen. I was hoping to find a new place for local Chinese but Ill be looking elsewhere.
Legendary in Etobicoke. Been eating from them since 90
The person answered the phone rudely without saying the company name. I was confused if I had the correct number. The lady was so rude and kept yelling cash only. This was fine but she kept giving me a total that was more than the bill. When I tried to dispute the amount she continually yelled cash only. I ended up cancelling my order because of how rude she was and took my business elsewhere.
Great food for years
I have been ordering from this restaurant for about 40 years now and i must say the service is definitely not what it used to be. The owner who is very kind and RESPECTFUL has made the mistake of handing the business down to his animal of a daughter......sad I cant even order from there anymore........cant afford criminal charges just to enjoy my favorite chicken balls
I have been eating from this restaurant for 35 years! I live in Aurora and whenever I am out this way I always get take out!!! Very polite on the phone. Fast easy ordering. Love this place!!!
The service attitude is too bad!!! the tone of the lady who receives us is very bad!!!Like I owe her a million dollars
This place absolutely slaps, some of the best american style chinese food ive had
Pretty good. Fresh and hot. Cash only.
One hell of a dive but the food is amazing! Best takeout Chinese food in the city!!
Best Chinese food around. We have been going here for over 10 years. Such amazing food. Glad theyre back open!
Just tried this place for the first time. Wasnt expecting much, but the rule with most Chinese places is that if it looks like a dump they probably put a lot of effort into the food instead. That definitely stands true here. We ordered the house fried rice and chicken balls and both are pretty fantastic. The chicken balls looked a little light, but were very crispy and cooked through. My wife, who is a chef, suggested they probably added rice flour to the batter. All I know is that her claim was these are the most chickeny chicken balls Ive ever had. This is definitely a neighborhood secret and Ill be coming back here more often.
Always amazing food. I am so glad they were able to open up again. Worth supporting this take out Chinese restaurant!!
After they reopened from being closed during covid, the food has changed quality slightly.
Fresh food, good portions, good variety.
Grew up eating from this place so maybe thats why I like it so much
Rude and unfriendly woman taking orders at the counter and over the phone. I will not return.
Ive been going here for over 25 years. Im glad they reopened after Covid. They have awesome food. Definitely a hole in the wall place, theres no sit down. Take out only.
The portions of protein in dishes has reduced, very little meat and shrimp in Cantonese Chow, Moo Goo more vegetables then chicken, spring rolls very small, all dishes are very bland.
After reopening only takes cash, and rude on phone.
Cheap and best
The lady answering the phone kind of threw me... HELLO WHAT YOU WANT?!... I asked twice if I had reached Far East Chinese Food but she kept repeating WHAT YOU WANT-- I didnt even know if I had called the right number. Kind of abrupt. Cash only was a tad inconvenient as well, I wish I had known that. The food was subpar compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Dont think Ill order from here again.
Delicious noodles and ribs.
The food was ok, could have been a little more tasty, prices ok.
Easily the best Chinese food in Toronto hands down old school style hope to see them again when things settle down from the pandemic but A+
So good. Been eating here for almost 20 years and have yet to find something comparable!
Horrible customer service. The lady on the phone was very rude. When I asked for the total of my bill she said she didnt know about 3 times and then hung up the phone on me. I would suggest going to another chineese food restaurant
Worst place to eat. They are rude and dont know how to talk to customers food is terrible dont know how there still in business. If I could give zero rating I would. Hong Kong gardens is by far the best Chinese in etobicoke.
Food is generally quite good for the money spent. Better to order ahead. Staff could work on being a bit more friendly...though food and value outweighs.
Short review: The best Canadian style Chinese food Ive tasted and for very little money. An absolute gem. For better or worse, Ive been trying all the Chinese places that will deliver to me. I wont lie, I was nervous about this one. They dont have a proper website with a menu and the person that took my order didnt seem interested in details like my full address or how I was going to pay. Regardless, the order went through and just twenty minutes later (quite possibly a record) my food arrived. Thats when my skepticism went away. The food was incredible! Their Shanghai noodles were cooked perfectly and werent the slightest bit greasy (a problem I encounter in most places) and their General Tsos chicken was the best I have ever tasted. The chicken was lightly battered, so lightly in fact I wasnt sure at first if it was battered, and like the noodles, not a hit of grease. Better yet, rather than a generic sauce of corn starch and red dye, it was smothered in the most subtly delicious sauce I have ever had. There was a hint of heat and it was the perfect consistency. Im basically ruined for eating General Tsos chicken anywhere else. Everything else was great too. I dont get it. A small restaurant on an quiet intersection in the middle of Etobicoke is serving up some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. Who would have thought? I am so impressed. Next time Im driving over to check it out in person and thank them for tonights dinner. I cant wait to try everything else on the menu.
Some of the best Chinese food you can get in the GTA. My wife and I live in Oshawa and well travel to Etobicoke for this because its that good.
Me and my dad went their about a week ago and I was meaning to write this 5 star review then! Anyway My family has went here for years and there food is always AMAZING! This is my number one Chinese spot and will stay that way as the food is always prepared hot and super delicious! Love this place if I could give 10 stars I would
Worst food ever. Bland and boring. Ginger beef should be called onions and beef.
I have been coming here for over 40 years...absolutely LOVE this place...the owner can be Quite Brief over the phone when she is taking your order; but, that is merely because She is always Soooo Busy behind the counter, gathering and filling orders....on Special Occasions, (Mothers Day, Fathers Day, etc.), DO call ahead to place your order...the battered shrimp and sweet n sour chicken balls are a MUST; pork fried rice, pork ends, and honey garlic spare ribs are also long time favourites...I have been here when it is busy; and have overheard people coming from as far away as Oakville, Brampton, and Woodbridge...for the Taste of the Far East...remember to bring Ca$h and enjoy a 10% discount...Always a Treat...!!!
Best Chinese food in Etobicoke
Best take out only.
Most items are pretty good like Chop suey and the Cantonese chow mein and fried rice. But some things are peculiar like anything deep fried looks undercooked by the colour. For example breaded chicken or shrimp comes out white instead of golden brown. They do not tenderize their beef and so it is as chewy as leather no exaggeration there, it is tougher than jerky. Avoid the beef here at all costs. Overall not bad place if you order the stuff they are good at.
Food is great but if you re closed at least have someone manage online so it doesn t say open. And also, open back up!!!
Best Chinese food place around... the women who runs the front is a bit on the rude side and needs to learn how to talk to her customers.... besides that I really enjoy the food.
I have been eating here for over 35 years. Best Chinese Food in the city!
Good food
Bought Hot and sour soup and Singapore noodles. Threw out the soup disgusting I I could I would give it a negative. The noodles were awful Go somewhere else
I love the hot and sour soup it is the best Ive ever had
Good
Good food, good pricing.
Meet was tuff and salty
Food a bit sweet. Not much meat and tonnes of veggies compared to other places of similar cost.
We periodically get food here (twice a year). The food is usually pretty good, and contrary to many reviews, the staff arent rude, weve never been yelled at before. The General Tao is saucy bliss, and I mean it!! We usually get 2. Overall, its a dive but very good!!
I have lived in Etobicoke for over 40 years and THIS place is the best in town. Their food is always fresh and tastes amazing. They are always busy which indicates how popular they are. Its take out only. Great service, great food, great place.
My family has been ordering frome here for the last 25+ years. Its my favourite Chinese food ever. Cant say enough good things about them.
I would give this a zero as customer service is non existent. When i asked for info on a dish i wasnt familiar with, the polite response i received was if you dont know, dont order. Ok, can someone else tell me about the dish? Answer: you dont have to order and then hung up! If you dont know what your own product why are you there? In addition we are all immigrants who have to speak a common language to communicate efficiently. If you cant hack that, then why station yourself in that position?
The food is okay. The lady that works there has always been rude. She doesnt speak English very well and shes always yelling. The General Tao chicken is really good though.
General Tao is my favorite, a little on the salty side but I never minded that with food personally, just a heads up for others.
I would give this place a zero if i could. Just call and try to place an order and youll see what I mean. Lady taking orders is the rudest person I have ever come across in my entire life! When I POLITELY called back to ask them if they accepted debit for delivery she literally yelled back WE NEVER TAKE DEBIT! I asked her why she was yelling and her response was DO YOU WANT IT OR NOT?! I have no clue this place is still in business.
The most amazing Canadian Chinese Food in all of Canada!
Food is greasy but damn is it delicious!!!
Not bad
Good food.
Ordered 2 single dinners for 1. The portions were tiny, the lemon chicken tasted weird, rubbery and covered in some nasty sauce that was not lemon. In other words do not stop here for dinner on your way home from work :(
Extremely rude. They hung up on me cause they dont know what chicken chow mein is. Never go there. Worst customer service ever I dont know how you this place is in business.
I love this place. My family has been getting Chinese food here since before I was born. Its a tradition. Wouldnt get Chinese food anywhere else
I have been ordering from here for over 20 years and I have never found anything strange or had a disappointed meal. They are local and fast and convenient.
Worst food Ive ever eaten in my life,I hope they go out of business so somthing good can open
RUDE, RUDE, RUDE...I cant say enough how disgustingly RUDE the lady is on the phone. They need to close shop!!!!!!
Terrible service. Lady who answers very rude doesnt know she own menu and hangs up when she cant understand your perfect English. Go figure. Food OK not great.
Good place. They use fresh vegetables. The best dish is spicy chicken (comes with vegetables) and its under $6. I would recommend trying this place.
This, place is dirty. Once found magget in my chicken ball. Place closed for six mnths because of it. So i figured should be clean now. Had guests bought from them and had fruit flies in my sauce. I called there she says what do u want me to do? Im not giving you money back or discount she said. If i complained about every restaurant had insects. Half Toronto would be closed!!!!!! NICE!! NEVER AGAIN. PURE NASTY!!!!
its cheap...its terrible...dishes are soooo greasy and lack texture...my buddy told me to try this place...never going to take his suggestions anymore...awful...
