About

Open: Wed-Sun Two slots: 6pm-8pm | 8:15pm-close Closed: Mon & Tue At Sushi Kaji, we are particular about authenticity. Kaji handpicks fish imported from Japan daily for the freshest and the best quality. Garnishes and condiments are exclusively imported from Japan. Although we do not serve "popular Japanese food" like "California roll" and "Teriyaki,” we will be pleased to introduce you to the authentic Japanese food culture. Our dine-in menu is chef Kaji's Sushi Omakase course ($160pp and up) only and there is no a la carte menu. To maintain the highest quality of food and service, only a limited number of seats are available each evening. Reservations are highly recommended in advance.

We've been coming to Sushi Kaji for 17 years. Always an extraordinary experience. The staff is professional, they remember your name and face even if you've been away for a while. Mr Kaji is a one-of-a-kind character. Master of his craft, and very funny even though he can seem serious/stoic behind the counter. We had the full Omakase course last night but I stopped taking photos once the sushi started coming. You need to concentrate and eat quickly to do the food justice!!

Dining at Kaji Japanese Cuisine was an absolute culinary delight that left us in awe. The sushi was simply incredible, with each dish presented so beautifully that you could truly feel the years of dedication and passion that every team member brings to their craft. The space itself is quite unassuming, with limited seating, but this only adds to the charm. The staff-to-client ratio is something I’ve rarely seen, ensuring every guest receives an exceptional level of attention and care. We were fortunate to have a table this time, but we’ll definitely be back with the hope of experiencing the magic up close at the sushi bar. The entire staff was professional and focused, exuding a seriousness that spoke to their commitment to excellence. However, as the night drew to a close, we asked to take a photo with the main chef, who we suspect may also be the owner. This was the perfect finishing touch to our evening—just as we settled into position, he surprised us with a hilarious move that we are all still laughing about. It was a memorable moment that added a layer of warmth and personality to the experience. Kaji is an unforgettable experience in both flavor and ambiance, and we can’t wait to return! Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic Japanese cuisine delivered with heart and artistry.

Wow, what an amazing meal. Intimate atmosphere, with some of the most fresh raw fish we have ever tasted. The presentation was a show on its own. Great place to celebrate a special occasion… however, the price is certainly a shocker. Once might be enough, and glad we experienced it, price just left me unable to give full 5 stars, rather 4.5 if I could!

I came here for my birthday dinner and I wasn't impressed. The service was very bland with no emotions from the waiter and very business like and robotic. The restaurant looked liked a well oiled machine with everyone working in and about each other without missing a beat. Where it truly disappoints is the feeling I get that I am in a fast food restaurant and the lack of impersonal service. It looked and felt like an assembly line of food, with everyone doing 10+ dishes of each item and then a waiter takes them out for the guests. Kaji only came out to do the sushi courses quickly and left. No interactions with his guests, the sushi was just shoveled one after another. The food was great but nothing outstanding compared to other authentic Japanese restaurants out there. Its sad to see that a once beloved and personal restaurant going this way.

I recently visited Sushi Kaji for my birthday with high expectations, but unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. Here’s a breakdown of my visit: Ambiance and Service: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt more like a fast food joint than an authentic sushi restaurant. The environment was rushed and impersonal, lacking the intimate, one-on-one chef experience that makes sushi dining special. Instead of a personalized touch, the whole process felt like a factory assembly line, with little attention to detail or customer interaction. Sushi Quality: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ The sushi itself was decent, but not outstanding. While the ingredients seemed fresh, the preparation lacked the finesse and care you expect from a high-end sushi place. The pieces were quickly assembled and lacked the delicate artistry that should accompany such cuisine. Overall Experience: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ The overall experience at Sushi Kaji was underwhelming. The hurried service and impersonal atmosphere significantly detracted from the meal. Dining at a sushi restaurant should be an engaging and refined experience, but this felt more like grabbing a quick bite at a fast food outlet. There was no sense of connection with the chef or appreciation for the culinary craft, which was quite disappointing. In summary, Sushi Kaji did not live up to its reputation. If you’re looking for a quick sushi fix, it might suffice, but if you’re seeking an authentic and immersive sushi experience, this place falls short. Overall Rating: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5)

This unassuming place on Queensway is an absolute monster of an eatery inside. The cities best sushi is here. I ve been here for the first time just last night. All of these people (very few of them) review bomb it by giving this place a 3 or a 4 that s mind boggling. This place is a 6 out of 5. This place ruined casual sushi restaurants for me. Incredible food. Please

The food is flawless and stunning. Its like eating art. We went for my sons birthday last night and had such a memorable time. The last time we were there was likely 10 years ago ( we did do some take out during the pandemic) and its still of the best if not the best Omakase experience in the city. Cant wait to go back.

To celebrate my girlfriends birthday, I took her to Sushi Kaji for the Waza omakase menu. It did not disappoint at all! Several special requests were made and all were followed without any hiccups. Staff were professional, polite and very attentive. I am simply amazed by the freshness of each and every nigiri being served, especially the Ika. That was the best Ika I have ever had. The chefs behind the counter, were professional, efficient. Each and everyone of them had a specific role and they nailed it. I was super amazed. You definitely see the years of experience they had together. No one had a moment where they forgot what their role/duty was. They had their assigned role, performed it and exceled in it. Others may have felt a rush sensation but the way I see it is that they kept the flow of nigiris being served in a good pace to maintain freshness. I am extremely satisfied and definitely will recommend to anyone that are debating to visit Kaji for an amazing Omakase experience. Thank you Kaji team for making this dinner a memorable one for me and my girlfriend.

4.8/5 Fantastic dining experience provided by an authentically Japanese sushi restaurant. The Omakase menu consisted of 4 appetizers, 8-10 pieces of sushi, and a desert. One can upgrade to include Sukiyaki or any number of premium sushi pieces. We opted for Uni as part of our meal. The food was delicious and fresh. Their dishware and plating was beautiful and each bite was a unique combination of flavours and textures. It was the most authentic sushi experience I ve had thus far in Toronto. Wonderful place to visit if you re looking for a treat! Side note: Street parking only. Dining is limited to around 90 mins so it was a relatively short experience.

Kaji is the best sushi in Toronto. Yes, that is a bold statement. Youll see. Always the best fish, fresh from the market every day having been flown in fresh from Japan, and prepared by a group of artists led by the master himself, Mitsuhiro Kaji. I truly enjoy sitting at the sushi bar and watching the preparation and the care that goes into meal. And all of that is reflected in the food that you will receive. And I truly appreciate the omakase experience which means that you dont need to worry about what to choose for your meal, the chef has arranged all of that. You simply need to relax and enjoy and experience things you probably never would have thought to try. The food, the presentation, the staff and of course Kaji himself. Always a treat. Would recommend and have and will repeat.

Definitely the best sushi restaurant experience Ive ever had in Toronto. Ive never experienced so many different types of fishes and sashimi before. This restaurant only has two options on their menu, both the pre-fixe menu, we took the smaller one. I wish I could explain each dish in detail, but that would take me hours to write. Bottom line, it was worth every penny. And they have a great selection of saki.

I had come here more than 10 years ago for a friends birthday and found this recent experience to be similar. It wasnt anything too special. Some pieces were better than others. I really enjoyed the mackerel from Japan but cant remember some other pieces. They have a good variety of fish. The Green tea cupcake at the end was sooo good! My critical points: - Some pieces werent cut very well with some dangling pieces off the sushi. - The negitoro at the end had a fish scale in there. - The cooked dishes were good but each element in the dish felt separate. E.g. Gindara with sweet tomago and beans with some sort of molasses sweet sauce. The egg is already sweet so why add the sauce and why serve with savory. Overall, service was fine. Not sure if Id come back since this is the same experience I had ten years ago! A liiiittle disappointing.

Visited Kaji recently and ordered their Waza Sushi Omakase. ($160). All courses are more or less at the chefs discretion and ingredients are sourced globally. So, you will only know whats being served upon arrival. They also offer the Takumi Omakase which features a wagyu sukiyaki ($200) replacing a noodle/soup course in the Waza. All other courses are the same. The Omakase included: 1. Tamago/Grilled black cod 2. Lotus root fried tiger shrimp 3. Sea bream, O-Toro, Chu-toro sashimi 4. Soup with red crab and tamago custard (wagyu sukiyaki for the Takumi Omakase) 5. Crab cake 6. Pressed Unagi sushi 7. Bluefin Tuna, Chu-toro, squid sushi 8. Scottish oceanic trout, Nagasaki Flounder, Amberjack, golden eye Snapper sushi 9. Tuna tartare with spicy mayo 10. Seared Scallop, prawn, Moroccan octopus sushi 11. Matcha gateau chocolate cake Service was exceptional. Each dish was explained and guidance was provided on how to enjoy optimally (if there was wasabi, soy sauce/no-soy sauce etc.) My only gripe was around the dessert. I found the cake to be overly dense, but I came here for their sushi and all the other amazing dishes they served. Parking: Paid street parking, free on Sundays

Sushi Kaji is a top quality experience for those who want a less formal/friendlier omakase experience with a sushi master working his craft with top quality ingredients. A small restaurant with two seating times, reservations are a must. Counter seating is where the action is. Ingredients, dishware, and garnishes are chosen to reflect the time of year and whats in season. Ingredients are flown in from Japan and other domestic and international coastal regions. Some cooked dishes served hot and cold, but the main focus is the sashimi and sushi (nigiri-type) bites. By the end of the meal, youll wonder if you have room for anymore bites, but of course, youll want that extra order of uni, toro, and/or Wagyu. No drink pairing, but theres a small curated menu of sake, small selection of beer, wine, and non-alc options. They were able to accomodate a baby and stroller (notified in advance during reservation), and had no issues with a lactose-sensitivity. Theres a step to the door, and a flight of stairs to the washroom, so not accessible. A special occasion restaurant that delivers. Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible. One step to get inside, and flight of stairs downstairs to washroom.

Sushi Kaji is tucked away in an unassuming commercial strip on The Queensway in Etobicoke. Tbh, we ve had people say to us that they ve passed by and wondered what sort of sushi restaurant would locate in such an unusual location. Well, the truth is that Sushi Kaji is at the top of the IYKYK heap, and discerning fans of top-of-the-line sushi make the pilgrimage to Kaji s eponymous resto to enjoy what is arguably the best Omakase in Canada. Kaji himself is one of Toronto s OG sushi masters, moving here as a young man in the 1980s and establishing his own brand not long after he arrived in Canada. He offers two Omakase options, with the distinction being that one features a wagyu beef addition. All the ingredients are fresh, carefully selected and (mostly) imported - often daily - to ensure the best quality and experience. And yes, it s not inexpensive so for most of us mortals this is very much a special occasion event. Recently, we celebrated our wedding anniversary there, and believe us when we say the evening was very special and worth every penny (and more).

It was an honor to dine with one of Torontos OG itamae and his team. Every part of the ~16 course omakase was fantastic, from the outstanding opener (a summery twist on hiyayakko using sweet corn tofu) to the understated and elegant finish (coconut ice cream with jasmine crumble and peach compote). Its impossible to pick a single favorite bite of sushi (hirame gave me a rush of nostalgia, o-toro is always decadent, aji remains a favorite fish, how can you not enjoy Hokkaido uni, and let us not forget the beauty of a torched scallop with a little sansho sauce), except maybe to say that being lucky enough to get some engawa here was a real treat. Thank you, Kaji-san!

Got to finally try this place!! I was so excited my partner booked this place and it met my every longing expectation. Food was great for omakase at this price point. Decent portion and a unique beverage selection. My partner enjoyed the non alcoholic option very much. This omakase counter feels very spacious which gives more privacy than other omakase bars. There wasn t much interaction with the chefs but they were attentive and great service overall. I leave 4 stars review as I feel like sushis were of similar palette (creamy, fatty side of things and a repeated garnish) than more variety. Can t wait to go back!

My honest review after eating at many different Omakase restaurant. After seeing 4.8 out 5 with many reviews I expected it to be WoW. Our seatings was at 6pm at the bar where you can see the chef make the food for you. If seatings are at 6pm always usually arrives 10 mins early so dinner can start right away, but doors didnt open till 6pm. The whole dinner felt like we were looking at the back of the chefs not an Omakase experience. Fish werent as fresh for the price and the Uni color was definitely not right especially coming from Japan. Fish were chewy and felt like it was in the fridge for a few days. For a set price between 160 to 200 and no uni included felt quite expensive. Also repeated of fish during the course. The service staff were great though, always refilling tea and taking plates away.

This restaurant offer two choices of omakase courses the difference is the Wagyu sukiyaki. The fish is great but toro and uni are extra charges. The experience is a positive one but with two minor complaints. I picked the sushi bar seating but the way they operate, pretty much not much difference in dining table seating where different sushi chef made different portion of the sushi course about 5-10 min ahead of time and I felt no connection with any sushi chef when sitting at sushi counter. I also found the sushi has too much rice in it in my opinion. It s still a good experience all in all the service staff are super friendly and attentive!

Ive had omakase at a few places in Toronto, and this place is the best! The food is sublime - worth every penny, and you will be full at the end. Watching Chef Kaji make sushi is a real treat. He also took the time to ask all the dining patrons during and after our meals if we were enjoying them, and was very charming in his responses. He is very funny! He and the rest of his staff are also very kind and friendly. At the bar you can also watch the other staff prepare the food, which is a fascinating process. Service was great - respectful and attentive, but not intrusive. Dishes come at a good pace, and empty dishes are whisked away. Tea is refilled without having to ask. Requests for water and other beverages are acted on promptly. The wagyu upgrade is worth it. The ambiance is intimate, but low key and unstuffy. Its perfect for a special date or anniversary with someone you want to impress with the food and service, rather than flashy surroundings. The noise level is low - you are able to talk to your dining companions in low voices. This was my second time dining at Sushi Kaji - the first time was during the pandemic. During my first time there, I spoke to a couple who has been going for over 20 years, twice per year. Another couple had also been there before. I can understand why Sushi Kaji has repeat customers! Im already planning my return. Side note: Do NOT park at the lot next door - its not allowed (its another property) and you might get towed. Street parking in front of the restaurant is plentiful and free usually at or after 6 p.m.

Kaji-san and the team are masters of their respective crafts. The fish quality is second to none as is the preparation and plating. The atmosphere combined with the service results in a zen like vibe that reverberates throughout the restaurant. While their is ample food given one does not leave feeling stuffed. Rather, it is feelings of satisfaction and tranquility that overcomes you. Prior to the pandemic I was a frequent visitor to Japan. Food was good but kinda overrated after being hyped as the best omakase in Toronto. Ive had omakase everywhere in the world (including Japan) and this was by far the most impersonal experience. The only time the chefs speak to you is when theyre explaining the ingredients to you. It was off-putting because the omakase experience is supposed to be intimate and personal, but I did not feel that at all - they could have gotten servers to serve the dishes instead and it wouldnt have made a difference. Anyway... The fish was fresh and some of the dishes were pretty interesting. They were generous with the toro which was great, especially since there wasnt any uni. The tofu appetizer was delightful as well. However one of the biggest duds was the soba - I thought the noodles were way too soft and chewy, like instant noodles. The broth was also nothing special. Overall, good food but I wouldnt travel all the way here again. Especially since the service was so impersonal and didnt feel special.

I find their take-out Omakase box at $140 to be of very good value for portion and quality. I have dined-in at Sushi Kaji 11 years ago and loved it. Having had take-out today, brought me back to when I had loved this place and the quality still stands. Mind you back then, Kaji was considered one of the most priciest places to have Omakase in Toronto. It is no longer, but I still believe it is a very good place to have a decent Omakase without breaking your wallet in Toronto. Their rice was so well balanced, although a bit much. After eating 7 pieces of the nigiri, I had to start removing some rice, but I am a small eater. The fish was fresh and it melts in your mouth. The uni was the sweetest I have ever had in Toronto. You can see in the photo, it was just the prettiest orange colour and that s so rare to see. Super fresh! And I don t usually like uni either. I wanted more actually this time. For take-out, I gotta say, this exceeded my expectations.
