Tiny, bare-bones joint serves up hearty Korean cooking, including housemade tofu.
Only managed to get take out since we got there late but oh man, is their tofu delicious. It's so creamy like cheese! I've never had tofu like that before. We ordered their tofu bibim bap, regular bibim bap, and toasted dumplings. Delicious!
Pure luck we stumbled into this restaurant. I love the concept here. Everything is about freshness and health, I was a little skeptical with the sign, but the soon tofu were delicious. I got the seafood one (spicy) and my partner got meat with seafood. I recommend the meat one, and spicy if you like them. Both were packed with plenty of fresh tofu. I've visited many Korean restaurants, and this by far has become a favorite - fresh ingredients, and traditional - 1000% will be back.
I came here with a group. The food was amazing but the service is so so. They had only 1 lady working on the floor so when it's busy, she was struggling in managing all the tables. I recommend the food, just don't expect too much in terms of service
Homemade tofu!! I don’t think people in Toronto understand how rare it is to find this. A true rare gem we’re lucky to have! Their homemade rice wine is so good and cheap, too.
I had been to this family run business a few times because of their food. Very traditional homemade food. The server is also the waitress, the owner, and the cleaner. Its a restaurant that’s run likely by a Korean mom and papa. I had never seen any other server. The sole server is a Korean lady, she knows limited english and when I tried to ask for more details for a dish, she would repeat the dish name. We typically cannot manage to finish a whole soon tofu bowl individually, so last time we went in a group of 4, we ordered their meal for 2 plus a few side dishes. She was not very happy and made a comment that slightly offended my guests Anyhow, its again a clear reminder that I am here for their traditional food and definitely not for service of atmosphere.
3 small appetizers and 2 fish appetizers are free. We got the combo tofu 3 mushroom soup, it comes with purple rice. It was a bit too spicy for me even though it is mild but that is because I don't eat spicy. Everything tasted very good and it was large portion. The classical music was a bit weird in a Korean restaurant haha, but we didn't mind it. Overall a good experience, will come back.
This a legit old school Korean spot with in-house made tofu which is featured heavily throughout the menu. First off, the tofu is absolutely top-class. Very fresh, subtle flavour, and delicious texture (medium to firm). If tofu is your thing, you should definitely give this place a try. They have a number of dishes that play off their tofu, but my favourite is the veggie dumplings. The dumplings are classic Korean style and steamed. I think I remember chives within the dumplings but because the tofu is so fresh it really brings out the adjacent flavours of the other ingredients within the dish. The Yaki-tofu is a Japanese style fried-tofu block with a sweet soy sauce marinade. This was ok for me. It wasn't super crispy and so I felt the textures didn't express the tofu flavour in the best way. The soon tofu dish is banging. At other soon tofu restaurants, there's a number of other ingredients within the dish (kimchi, bok choy, mushroom, etc..) I got the original pork and that's exactly what they delivered: ground pork, a clay pot full of homemade silken tofu and the deliciously spicy soup. I thought it would be boring with other veggies in the soup, didn't even miss it the tofu is so good. Classic side dishes are free (bean sprouts, kimchi, and also a nice taster of fresh firm tofu) with a very nice addition of two fried fish. That's different than most Korean places these days and very nostalgic as that's very old school Korean restaurant style. Finally, the best part of the tofu is that it tastes INFINITELY better the next day. We brought the dumplings and yaki-tofu home and left it in the fridge, I am not exaggerating, it tastes better the next day. I guess that in-house tofu recipe need a day to really let the flavours mellow into the dish. Big fan of this place, will be taking my wife there again.
Chodang Soon Tofu is such a treasure! In-house made tofu makes an incredible soon tofu dish and tofuyaki dish. It was a homey and comforting meal, and service was lovely. The woman serving us was endearing, cute, and made us feel welcomed. We had such a pleasant time! I would highly recommend. This is a hidden treasure of Etobicoke 👍
The taste is not the original Korean. Their food was too strongly spiced that we couldn t taste the tofu and biji. I don t recommend for Korean tasters as a Korean
Amazing service and great soon tofu. I recommend mixed with beef and seafood! Cant wait to come back and try the spicier option!
Consistently great!
Super authentic Korean restaurant. Owner is super kind and the food reminds me of home!
I really wish I didn t have to leave this review but I think it s important for fellow brown and black folks to be aware of a few things before coming to this spot. Sorry to say that as three Muslim girls (two of us being hijabis) coming in to dine, we were treated abhorrently. The restaurant was utterly empty and yet our waitress kept sneering and sucking her teeth at us when we were going over the menu with her. Clearly we were not welcome from the moment we walked in. We were so uncomfortable from waitress s attitude that we just left. Will never be back and would not recommend to other black or brown skinned folks or Muslims. So disappointing.
It is simply awesome. Fresh and tasty. Even the best Korean traditional rice wine. Two thumbs up Vegetarian options: Tofu Kid-friendliness: Quite and good Wheelchair accessibility: OK
Do not eat here. Very poor service, very rude and disrespectful. Food was difficult to eat and the restaurant was barely ventilated during a hot summer day. Soon tofu was like water mixed with salt. Mushrooms had gone bad, and a family member suffered from diarrhea for hours. Very sad and unfortunate that a restaurant aiming to serve such a great cuisine is ruined by rude service and almost inedible food. I wish this place had done better, had good expectations for this place. Thank you.
good taste
Its delicious.
The soon tofu soup was really good. Highly recommend
So delicious, we will definitely return!
Real soft tofu. The soft tofu here is the best in Toronto. Even the sticky rice is the best. May you prosper! If youd want to try real tofu without leaving Canada, here is the answer. So good. Everythings so legit, including perfectly cooked rice! They dont compromise the food. Recommend this place
If you want authentic Korean food, you should visit here. Food is amazing, portion is great, service was great, and the price was great as well!
Best Korean food ever. And I am a food snob. Home made tofu, authentic, with a clean taste. No junk food here, genuine earthen stone bowls and purple rice. Quaint decor but authentic, small but very warm. Light tempura not oily ... Just try it too much to like here. And I dont do many reviews. Vegetarian options: Tofu mushroom bowl, tempura, tofu teriyaki, golden rice bibimbap all excellent.
My family and I have been coming here for years. ChoDang soon tofu consistently delivers delicious food made with quality ingredients in a clean and cozy setting. Not to mention the prices are very reasonable. The made in-house tofu is second to none! As vegetarians, it is challenging to find Korean restaurants with so many options on the menu. The Tofu Yaki, Veggie Dumplings and Kimchi Or Mushroom Soon Tofu bowls are just some of the standout dishes. So so good!
Amazing Korean. Toronto Life raved about this place some years back, and rightfully so. Tofu made fresh in house everyday. All the soon tofu bowls are excellent. Lots of mushrooms and great kimchi if you opt for one of those two. The tofu yaki (fried tofu) is amazing, as are the dumplings. Homey, chill dine-in experience. The service is cool Korean mom and pop styles. Vegetarian options: Tofu, soon tofu bowls, dumplings Dietary restrictions: Loads of dairy and nut free, vegetarian, and vegan options. Parking: Plaza parking right in the front. Kid-friendliness: Baby seat and chill place without too much commotion for a child to be at.
Excellent soondubu!
Dining in is better than take out here. If you get take out they only give you 2/5 (sprouts, radish) appetizers that come with the tofu normally. This is also the only restaurant Ive been to that refuses to serve tap water and you must buy bottled water. Not sure if its a communication issue, but the lady can be a bit terse. Tofu is solid. The soya milk was good but stay away from the katsu, its mostly batter and drowned in sauce.
My favourite restaurant in the world! As a foodie and as someone who works in the industry, this is my favourite food ever. Highly recommend
The server was sooo kind to us. The food was delicious! Homemade Tofu was very tasty!
Delicious food. Place gives you a homely feeling.
This is a great find. I had never been through Islington Village before (a short stretch on Dundas West between Kipling and Islington). Hit the area around lunchtime and saw this place just as I was feeling hungry after a long walk. Small and cosy interior and a friendly if not effusive welcome. I have a light familiarity with Korean food but it doesnt really go much deeper than Kimchi, Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Japchae and Korean chicken, so I asked the owner for a recommendation and had the Soon Tofu, a mixed tofu soup with seafood. The tofu is cooked in front of you in a bubbling bowl with a kimchi stock and it was delicious, accompanied by rice and by the usual pickled sides and a small fried fish. It was a lot of food but I made good work of most of it. I have eaten at some pretty high end places a few times in my life but what I really like are hidden gems that serve simple, home-made, authentic food and this meets all of those criteria. Highly recommended and very inexpensive. The whole thing, with a can of pop was under $21 before tip. Vegetarian options: It is first and foremost a tofu place, albeit with lots of other options. The Soon Tofu, which I had is a bubbling tofu soup that can be had with kimchi or mushroom (and the stock is kimchi based). Dietary restrictions: Vegans and vegetarians will have lots of options here. Kid-friendliness: Family tables and a cosy setting
Chodang Soon Tofu is one of the few restaurants I know very well that prioritize preparing dishes as healthy as possible. The owners make the tofu from scratch in the restaurant and the overall quality of the final product really benefits from it. Chodang Soon Tofu has the best tasting soup I have ever had the pleasure of trying. I have been coming to Chodang Soon Tofu ever since my grandparents and parents took me here. This restaurant has fed three generations of my family because of its consistent quality, healthy options and delicious dishes. Vegetarian options: The mushroom soon tofu is a fantastic vegetarian option. I personally find it to be the most flavorful and delicious item on the menu.
This place has really excellent authentic Korean food. Its run by a lovely couple and they make the best tofu. Really awesome family business. Everyone there seems to be Korean so thats a really good sign
Great family owned place, food is good ans authentic
Great, traditional, authentic Korean food. Service was fast and friendly. Lots of food for what you pay for.
Their food is so good!!!
If youre looking for an authentic tofu soup this is the spot to hit up. I discovered this no-frills, hole in wall just over 5 years ago and I cant go more than 3 months without a bowl of extra spicy beef tofu soup and a cheeky smile from the owner. The tofu is made fresh on-site and literally melts in your mouth. The crispy dumplings are amazing the banchan is top notch.
Ive been here once before last winter and the food and service were okay. But I went again today and our two servings seafood soon Tofu soup smelled and tasted very funky. It did not taste like the dish I had the last time and it wasnt like other soon tofu soups Ive had. We told her it smelled weird and it tasted very salty. She said how can it be that way and that she will have to make the soups again so we should just have these ones. She was very rude, said it was our preference and we can probably not take the spice, which was not true. She didnt replace the soups and stood beside our table staring at us for five minutes. It was very uncomfortable and later she did not come to us when we were asking for our bill although she was being very nice and chatty with other Asian customers. Horrible service, food was not good because they probably used bad seafood, although it was good last time. Really sad as I love Korean food and was excited to have a go to spot in this neighbourhood. Will never go again especially because how badly we were treated.
Tofu related dishes are really good. But DONT ORDER dishes that are not related to tofu - bulgogi, donkatsu, teriyaki. Meat were not fresh (had a old meat smell) and very hard to chew.
I love the fresh taste and friendly service.
delicacy. A neat side dish. The best pure soft tofu stew!
Really authentic! Fresh and great quality food.
I am very disappointed at the Beef Tofu soup. The portion of beef is unbelievably small . What beef? It is like minced beef. We ordered two tofu soup and the portion of the side dishes is for one person only. The place was not busy, only one other customer. There was no response when I asked for a check. I ended up went up to the counter to pay. Never will I go back there.
good!!!
Tried the chodang soon tofu with beef ( maximum spicy), boiled dumplings, and tofuyaki. Thought it all tasted great! Tofu tasted silky and fresh in the spicy soup. Banchan also included a fried fish on the side which I don t normally see at other Korean restaurants.
Fresh and delicious food. Were vegetarian and found many options.
My favourite restaurant
If you go, the dish to order is the chodang soon tofu (beef or pork). It is authentic Korean and delicious. Ya the decor, service etc. Isnt michelin star but youre eating tofu, in a strip mall so check those expectations. Its super good, hommade food.
The tofu soups are always on point. Tofu yaki is a must.
This is an absolute gem for authentic Korean Soon Tofu. It is places and restaurants like Chodang Soon Tofu that makes us feel truly blessed and appreciative to be living in Toronto. They dont have a large menu (which I am sure Gordon would be pleased) with a list of dishes where tofu is the star. We have tried every single vegetarian item from their menu, all utterly delicious, flavourful, fresh, healthy and consistence. Most importantly, you feel the love and pride in every bite. Apart from their signature Kimchi Soon Tofu, which is an important staples of ours, their Vegetarian Bento box is to die for, and their Stone Bowl Bibimbap is healthy, hearty, tasty and satisfying. Been coming here for more than a decade, not once have we walked away feeling dissatisfied. Always feeling happy and loved with their food, like we came visit our adopted Korean parents, they just made us a beautiful home cooked meal.
Just ordered takeout and wow is this a hidden gem in the neighborhood!! I am not usually the biggest fan of tofu but this made me keep refilling my plate with more since it was so creamy and as fluffy as a cloud. I can t wait to go in person when the lockdown is over and experience their hearty hospitality and food again.
The tofu soup was not in any way authentic. The portion was big but there was very little meat/seafood, and the soup was quite bland so we had to add some salt to it. The lady who took the order was nice though. Overall, not worth the price.
We ordered the fresh tofu and the mushroom and seafood shareable stew. The portions were HUGE and the food was delicious. We were also served several side dishes (kimchi, radish, and a fried fish) as well as rice. All of which were also really good. Looking forward to our next meal here!
Too dark inside, not welcoming mood, not kindly serviced, all food is too salty
Hidden gem of Etobicoke! Tofu made fresh, in house. This restaurant humbly serves amazing Korean soups that are jam packed with flavour and quality ingredients. Side dishes were an absolute delight, especially the tasty mackerel that was served. Hope that more people discover what a great place this is!
Good food & hard working woman!
If you re looking for delicious Homemade high quality tofu and gourmet Korean food - please come to this gem in Etobicoke - Toronto s west end. Own and operated by a lovely Korean couple - they have a clean space and their menu offers a wide variety of Soon Tofu soup from vegetarian to meat - guaranteed to be excellent. I find this to be the best place!
Home made tofu and home style Korean food. All their tofu dishes are great especially the soon dobu ofc. Heads up tho.... the lady that works here (I think the owner) is hella mean and has a nasty attitude. if you dont mind that and like a little personality with your food like I do, then come on by! I always visit here when I have a chance!
Ordered the bulgogi bento box. Not recommended. Service is not satisfactory.
Tofu yaki is a must order
Feels like I am dining at my relatives house. The ahjuma that is serving us is very nice and sweet. would definitely go back in winter
The food here is simply delicious. Vegetarian options: Kimchi and tofu and seafood options Parking: Not to much parking but there are a few spots Wheelchair accessibility: The restaurant is one level but the washroom is downstairs like a lot of places in Toronto so not accessable.
The place is small. The foods are decent. However, it takes so long to serve. They didnt provide water for drink. Small cup of soy milk is $2.00 It seems that this Chodang Soon Tofu is run by two people, husband and wife only. Thats why the service was sooo slow. They are so busy, that we cannot even order or ask for drink. She didnt even tell us about drink. We thought she would serve water later, until we asked about the drink, and we were told, there is no water, and we should order for other drink, but she didnt tell us in the first place. They only provide one set of free side dishes for 6 people, and cant request more. I would prefer ONNURI in Mississauga, where they provide side dishes which we can request more, and free water or hot tea. Conclusion, we would not recommended this.
Chodang Soft Tofu makes a certain amount of fresh tofu every day, the ingredients are fresh, no seasoning is used, so it is easy to digest, it tastes good, and the price is very reasonable. Everything is delicious, but the combination of stone pot rice and seafood soft tofu is especially outstanding. Its also good because it doesnt use genetically modified soybeans. Spicy pork or chicken lunch boxes are also good. There are a wide variety of lunch boxes available. My family has been going to Chodang Soft Tofu since the beginning, and I, who has poor digestion, have never had any indigestion when eating here. I think its because of the good ingredients and sincerity. They say that chemical detergents are one of the biggest causes of cancer these days, but they also use natural detergents for dishwashing, so I feel comfortable eating here. In Chodang soon tofu, they make a certain amount of fresh tofu every day, the ingredients are fresh, and after eating without seasonings, it is digestible, the taste is good, and the price is perfect. Its all delicious, but especially the harmony of stone pot rice and seafood pure tofu is excellent. Also, its good not to use genetically modified beans. Spicy pork or chicken lunch boxes are also good. The type of lunch box is very rich. My family has been going to soft tofu from the beginning of the first time, but my digestive function is not very good, so Ive never been able to digest it when I eat it here. I think its because of good ingredients and sincerity. Its said that chemical detergents are one of the major causes of cancer these days, but its comfortable to eat here because it uses natural detergents for dishwashers.
I loved it here! My favourite dish would have to be the freshly made dumplings. Theres different ways in which they cook them, fried is the best! The couple that work here are super friendly. I highly recommend coming here!
in 2019, tofu soup price was $8.99. After the covid in 2021, she increased price to $12.99. in 2022, she increased the price again to $14.99. You have to buy a water in this resturant, side dishes are NOTrefilable in this resturant. other Korean resturant, side dishes are unlimited free. the lady here is very rude
Best soon tofu in town
They don t serve complementary water. They have bottled water available. Not sure you had to pay for it. They don t offer second round of banchan(sidedish) refill either. However I would still go back for their homemade tofu and makgeolli. Ordered Chodang best combo #1($65.95). Spicy soft tofu stew, bulgogi, tofuyaki they were all delicious. Panfried croaker fish to come with combo was really good. This combo was good enough to feed 4 people if you order extra stone pot rice. Freshly cooked stonepot rice is another bonus. They pour water in a stonepot after they serve you rice. Koreans enjoy brown crusted rice soaked in water with their meals.
The tofuyaki is amazing.
Authentic
The real deal! This place is very close to us and we have a new favorite. The Korean lady who works here is so hardworking and pleasant. I recommend the mushroom tofu soup the tofu is amazingly fresh and it has a mix of enoki and other mushrooms. Perfect tofu soup for a cold night. Can t stress how important it is to support local businesses right now!
Always consistent, always great service and best of all amazing food
Small little restaurant with great Korean food, have been there 4 times ... love it. Tofu fresh...love their Gold mix rice. Will make this my go-to for Korean. Filling and delicious.
I ordered takeout from Chodang on a whim while walking by, and boy was I amazed. The pork soon tofu was incredibly tasty. The tofu was silky and flavourful, the broth was perfectly salted and tangy, and the spice level was exactly as promised. I basically inhaled it. I loved it. Doesnt hurt that Chodang is also a local, family-run business! I cant wait to eat their food again!
Uber had Chodang Soft Tofu, so I ordered it according to the reservation time, but as the reservation time was approaching, they canceled it. When I called and asked, they got annoyed and said they dont do Uber. So shouldnt I call Uber and tell them Im no longer going to use Uber? They tell us to call Uber. Really unfriendly service
The lady was rude af. We ordered seafood soon tofu, one mussel and one shrimp. You call that seafood stew? Over priced for quality. Bs. Dont start yelling at customers becuase you know your food isnt great at all. Bs place never going there again
I think about was this hole in the wall with their perfect morsels of tofu yaki and steamed dumplings often. Their tofu is so good bc they make their tofu daily, so it s fresh. I wish I had more tofu yaki
One of my favourite hole in the wall restaurants. Even though they have recently raised the prices a bit its still great value for the amount of food you get. And this is the place youll want to visit once we can dine in again because its just not the same when its take out! Having the food served in a piping hot dolsot that just keeps everything nice and hot really does make quite a difference. Cant wait to go back once dine in is an option!
I ordered tofu bibimbap, and it came out like this: rice + tofu + egg + sesame + seaweed / soy sauce, red pepper paste, and raw radish. Since its called bibimbap, I thought there would be other vegetables, but isnt this just tofu rice and not just tofu rice? Its called hand tofu, but it tastes nothing like commercial tofu. I cant tell the difference. At $18 including tax, I think the owner is either very proud of his tofu or hes had a hard time with it due to COVID-19, but as a consumer, I think $8 is reasonable. It felt like I was eating after being released from prison. It was my first visit and I got soft tofu. I wonder if I made a mistake in what I ordered. The price went up a lot compared to a year ago when it appeared on Google. Anyway, tofu bibimbap? I dont recommend it. I feel like I was scammed. Imagine that I ordered curry rice and it came out with curry sauce without any ingredients on the rice. There were a lot of people in the store, but Im not sure Id go back to try something else. 18 dollars for the plain rice and the plain tofu? I think it s way too much overpriced. I don t recommend tofu bibimrbob
This restaurant was once promising but its really gone downhill fast. Beware, their entire menu is salty!! The soon tofu soup is so salty it makes you wonder if theyre trying to overcompensate for weak flavour. The side dishes/banchan are also salty and unappetizing. Dont be duped by their photos or complimentary side dishes. This is not authentic Korean (or good) food by any means. The owner/server is rude af and inattentive. We asked for water to drink and she brought us bottled water. When we asked if we could just get tap water, she said she doesnt serve tap water due to COVID. Uhh, last I checked, COVID isnt transmissible through water! And she still had the audacity to charge us for the bottled water we didnt even want! Completely inappropriate and dishonest. I do not recommend this place.
Dumplings and tofu were great, bulgogi and teriyaki beef was very bad. I wouldn t go back, except to try their veggie tofu bowls
We sat at a table for dine-in. The lady working there was attending to other tables but never came to ours to take our order. Every time we tried to call for her attention she either went to the back or was busy with other people. After waiting for 25 minutes we decided to leave and try another restaurant in the plaza beside. Such a shame as I was looking forward to trying their soon tofu. Too bad the lack of customer service would turn customers away seems like based on other reviews my experience is not uncommon.
I ordered today, and a few hair was inside the food.
Whenever I come to this place I feel welcomed and feel comfortable! I always come here with my parents whenever we feel like we want Korean food. Also, their food is amazing and I always get the spicy chicken bento sometimes the don katsu! Also, the salad is great as well! I love the fact they use non gmo and use fresh ingredients for thier wonderful food! Family friendly restaurant and great staff members treat them right so you can get your meets met. They do not use detergent when they wash their dishes for example, they use flour. If you are looking for a great Korean restaurant I highly recommend and their tofu is amazing! Go and get it now I give this place over 5 stars I also always appreciate the front lady who works there for the kind words which makes me so happy in order to come again ^-^ always makes food right and amazing. We use stone bowl and earthen pot draw breath. But come and enjoy the wonderful food they make when you can you will never feel disappointed once you try here but go knock until you try it!!! ^-^ I give them two thumbs up no matter what Enjoy your lunch or dinner~!!
A most delightful experience, healthy and scrumptious!!!
My Viet mom loves tofu and I wanted to bring her here. The service was excellent and the food came fresh, hot and fast! The owner is very nice and I appreciated getting to enjoy spending time with my mom here. Will definitely return!
Best soon tofu soup Ive had in Toronto
Had a great meal overall, but the tofu in particular was incredibly fresh and tasted amazing. Super cozy spot with great service. The definition of a hidden gem.
The service is not great but its hands down the best soondubu I have ever had! Very homey, tasty, and flavorful! Comes with free side dishes, which includes 1 deep fried fish.
While Toronto has quite a few great soon tofu soups, Chodang is the standard I judge them all by. The dumpling soon tofu soup is my favorite. The soups are served boiling, with a raw egg to crack in to them. As youre taking this step, and wondering how to start on this tasty bowl, a hot stone bowl with rice is brought, the rice extracted, and water poured in to the stone bowl, creating a toasted rice broth for later. One spoon at a time, the hot soup can be combined with the rice to reduce the heat. Personally, I save the dumplings for last, as I like them best. (Yes, I also save the frosting for last on a cake.) The bachan is really tasty, including a small fish thats a bit fiddly for me, but very tasty.
Oh my, such an OG!
I was introduced to this place by my neighbour. The restaurant itself is simple. The menu might seem intimidating but really is not The food and variety of food is amazing. The main feature is the tofu. They make their own everyday. The dishes they offer both vegan and non vegan dishes(aka meat dishes). The utensils they usually use is stainless steel chopsticks and spoons. If you need forks you can always ask. The food portion is very filling. The soup dishes are amazing especially on cold wet days. Every time I have gone here I ordered something different and have not been disappointed. Good food all around.
Amazing food. The lady is an older Korean woman working her butt off for God knows how many years, who knows what shes been through, and doesnt play to our expectations of superficial smiles. Big deal. Enjoy an amazing meal and carry on. The soon tofu soup is amazing! The rice is great. And shes happy to see you enjoying and eating all thats in your bowl.
Tastes great and even better service.
Fantastic spot. Fantastic food. Great value. Check it out!
This is some of the best korean food you can eat. I lived in Seoul for 3 years and this soft tofu soup is easily the best Ive had. Everything is freshly made including the tofu made with ontario soybeans. The woman working here may seem rude at first but I believe shes just uncomfortable speaking English. After coming here for a few times shes definitely opened up and is pleasant and smiley. The prices are great and with every soup order you get rice, side dishes and a small fried fish. Do yourself a favour and eat here.
A place where you can taste all kinds of tofu made on site.
Amazing food and very nice staff! Emphasis on the amazing food!
Awesome Tofu soup with proper balance of spices. Will definitely comeback
This place is BY FAR the best tofu based Korean restaurant in Toronto and this place is one of the very few spots I will regularly return to despite the commute! They have a lot of truly authentic dishes to choose from which not only are all very reasonably priced but also generous and delicious. The best part is that they make their tofu in house which allows maximum freshness and flavour. Their taste alone could make any tofu dislikers to actually like tofu. Its that GOOD! I had some doubts about this place prior to my initial visit due to some of the negative reviews but I seriously do not understand how can someone such bad things about this place. They have always been really friendly and consistent. I highly recommend this place! It will be worth the trip!
Love there freshly made tofu....lovely. Hope on unpacking more of their Korean dishes to comment on. Their kimchi bowls for those of you who love it......yummm
Very authentic, flavourful and great side dishes. Invited here with a friend otherwise, I would have never discovered this hidden gem. Very nice lady that works here. Shes shy but very helpful and we made her laugh at our attempt to speak Korean. The place is very clean, rustic and has a simple to understand menu. Highly recommended to try out if you are in the area.
The care they take in making everything is so obvious. The tofu is delicious. Space is tight come early
The owner has a bit of character and the back-stage man always makes sure you do not see him anytime. Maybe they have a secret tofu recipe. But as long as you keep polite and friendly, they serve you really well. Their specialties include house-made tofu dishes and rice wine. Etobicoke is a place of mystery. For every small restaurant striving to survive for years, there is a story behind it, and there is special food to back them up from those constantly refreshing downtown restaurants.
Good Local Korean restaurant that sells homemade tofu. Would return.
TLDR: A must-go in the GTA. The in-house Soon Tofu order cant be beat in price or taste. For one order of kinchi soon tofu, you get a fried fish, rice served out of a stone bowl, appetizers, and then your soon tofu. Its a perfect dish for the colder weather, and the indoor atmosphere makes it that much cozier. During COVID, their are also doing take-out which is a great option too :)
Best tofu Ive ever had
Best. Tofu. Ever. I m not exaggerating. I have taken so many friends here who don t like tofu and they have become tofu converts. This is nothing like the stuff you buy in the package. The closest thing I can compare it to is fresh ricotta and it is amazing on its own dipped in some soy sauce and sesame oil. I highly recommend the mushroom tofu soup and I always get an order of fresh tofu to go. Do yourself and these hardworking folks a favour and order takeout tonight. You ll have yourself a delicious, nutritious meal while supporting local businesses during these tough times.
The food was bad and service was worse. Just unbelievable. If anybody wants to experience authentic Korean tofu soup I recommend Bukchangdong Soontofu. I tasted chemical too in the tofu. Not sure what that was.
Very good
Food is decent but I can t deal with the rude service anymore. I thought the woman working there had gotten nicer until she told my friend and I to leave since we were talking for apparently too long after we finished our meal. There was nobody else in the restaurant.
Food is ok, and the service is prompt but the lady working there had ZERO personality and needs to hire someone to help her to deal with customers if they dont want to go out of business.... my boyfriend loves the free fish that comes with the soup but she makes you feel horrible for coming in to support the business...
Nice to eat tofu stew on a cold winter evening. A few options available for the tofu stews and i chose the kimchi. Solid taste and filling if you eat/drink everything including the classic appetizer dishes and the Rice crust bowl that is filled with water. The claim is they produce their own tofu. As well they do not use detergent to clean the hot stone rice bowl used to cook the rice. No way to verify this, but thats a bonus if they do. Picture does not include the rice bowl and the hot stone bowl with water.
ONE OF THE BEST Korean food I ve ever had. Incredibly fresh tofu, you can taste the beans. The lady was not as terrible as everyone else described, just a little quite. Many choices of free appetizer & the price is very fair. Definitely coming back.
Been going here for years. Very cozy and the food is always good
good quality korean cuisine
I had the Mixed (beef and seafood) Soon Tofu and it is the best tofu pot in the area. I ve tried Insadong and other Korean places in the area and this beats it by far. They hand make the tofu in house and they fill the bowl to the brim! The intensity of the flavour is also better. The extra items in the bowl are a little scarce with only 1 muscle, 1-2 shrimp, and almost invisible amounts of ground beef, but it still tastes great. It also comes with an egg, a dried fish, and the hot water in a bowl with the leftover rice situation (not sure what it s called but they give it to you!). Would deffs recommend. Just don t get offended by how angry the women who works there looks. She s sweet at heart :)
Food is always good
Small cozy place - I think there are only two people who operate the restaurant. It can get busy. Their specialty is fresh made tofu stew. I pretty much have only gone for the mushroom tofu stew and has always tasted great. The other option is their pork katsu cutlet - but always ask for sauce on the side instead of on top.
Went to their uptown location and missisauga location and after moving dt, went to this one. Quality all very excellent!
Bad customer service, rude behaviour. Did not allow me to sit and eat, eventhough for no reason.
Please dont come here! The lady is SO RUDE!!!! They advertise that they close at 10pm but really they close at 9pm because they dont accept any customers after 9pm!!! Me and my friend arrived at 9:10pm and the owner just shook her head. Didnt even speak! But they had open sign on!! Ha! Also we called at 9:20pm asking if we can come now and she said they are closed. So we asked to turn off the open sign but she didnt answer and hung up. The attitude ......... never going there
Worst soontofu ever
Don t go to this store!!! The lady is SO RUDE and should definitely not be in the service industry as confirmed by many. Be prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes before she actually tales your order. Most of the time, she just busy doing her own things without even look at the customers. And the food was toxic as well. I definitely felt Sick after eating that! When you enter the store it smells like food gone bad.
The best authentic Korean restaurant. More authentic than Korea to some degree. Many seem to have felt that the female server is rude. I know she is not rude at all. She is shy and very warm hearted inside. Also I prefer a place where they make their food with honesty making good flavor from good ingredients instead of MSG. This is the #1 place to recommend if anyone asks me where to get good korean food.
Great tofu
Great menu. Almost everything is freshly prepared be it Tofu, sauces, noodles
We always buy fresh tofu after dinner; its the best around i think. Theres a language barrier with server/owner? but she tries and has been nicer than when we first started coming
the best tofu soup.
Best tofu soup in town, with worst service ever.
Great food! Would recommend to anyone who likes eating good food.
Awesome Bento!!
Best soon tofu in GTA. Im from Mississauga but I travel all the way to this restaurant whenever Im craving soon tofu. People should also try their Fresh Tofu its soooo good. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.
Best tofu I have ever had. The best restaurant in Etobicoke! A hidden gem that I hope stays small and wonderful.
Best soft tofu soup in town.. Not a 5 star because of the terrible service from the old lady
Been living in the area the past 10 years and have tried most of the Korean options that have come and gone in this neighbourhood. Chodang has and continues to be always the go to when I have guests over that want something Korean. They specialize in homemade tofu which by far is the best in the city Ive had in any kind of tofu dish. From Soups, to BiBimBap (rice), or just a Bento Box the quality is amazing. For the price you are also given a really nice portion and guaranteed to be satisfied. The staff is also really friendly, only thing to keep in mind is side dishes are limited to mostly only for the soup orders.
Best kimchi soup in town. House made tofu is super silky and fresh!
Terrible service great food
Great fresh tofu. Really helpful with our daughter too!
Best experience ! Highly recommend.
Great friendly local joint. Tofu made fresh in house
The service is so bad but you dont even care because the food is so good.
Love this place! Their tofu is homemade and very tasty!
Family-run and affordable.
The food was excellent, plentiful, and more than a fair price, especially when you consider that the tofu is made in-house. It was an authentic experience and I can t wait to come back!
Last call is 9 pm .. I went here at 9 pm but we kicked out from restaurant :(
Best Korean food in town. Love the mom and pop style. Very tasty dishes.
The food is just as delicious as the rest of reviews say. Had the spicy Chodang Tofu Bowl; very tasty. However, the woman who was running the place was not very welcoming and was very difficult with us when we wanted a refill on the kimchi and other appetizers. She wasnt clear that we had to pay extra for the appetizers and she ended up charging us $3 per extra appetizer, wasnt listed on the menu. We typically get the appetizer refills for free at every other Korean restaurant.
The food was nice but the rest no....
Fantastic! Quaint, consistent, and delicious. House made tofu everyday!
Soon tofu is da s$@#?*!
Good not great. Old decor
Very good and healthy
Good Korean food; reasonable price.
The food is amazing and the service is unique.
A mom-n-pop place that serves very authentic Korean menu with complimentary fried whole small fish for certain dishes ordered. Tofu used in dishes is fresh made. The mixed grain purple rice is unique and delicious and healthy which you dont get from other korean restaurants. Lady owner might look serious but actually she is nice and do smiles when we chit chat with her by adding some of our not so fluent korean and she tries her best to communicate in her not so fluent English. A restaurant my whole family will certainly go back again for more authentic Korean food with their special purple mixed grain rice
Highly recommend their Chodang Tofu Yaki!
Food was pretty good but the woman was kinda rude. We had a group of 7 and we had to sit at different tables and she told us to eat not talk, talk after eating). Wont be back
Good tofu
Always a good choice for authentic Korean.
Tasteless food and rude service
