Restaurant Training Lab The Humber Room is our on-campus upscale casual restaurant training facility, that is open to the general public. Students in Humber's culinary and hospitality programs put their practical skills to use preparing lunches and dinners in a real world environment. The 120 seat restaurant offers world class cuisine, replicating a fine dining restaurant. The state-of-the-art teaching restaurant is the most modern environments for students to learn in.
The waiter didn't speak english. He couldn't communicate the prices for the drinks or any other information. We asked for 3 glasses of tap water instead we were charged 3 overpriced waters for $4.50 each. The entire 3 courses took an hour and a half. In the first hour, you only get soup. Not worth the time. Is english not in the curriculum?
Great food for the price.
Came in today and was underwhelmed. The bacon scallop appetizers were amazing except the squash mash sauce could’ve been warmer, I think the entree & dessert could’ve been more seasoned or had more richness since it tasted bland. The students were nice but wish they could have more enthusiasm since I had a hard time hearing what’s going on. This may sound harsh but I noticed that it was fairly chaotic and their manager/teacher seemed really mean towards the servers/students. The students/servers also seemed like they barely had an idea of what’s going on or their roles. The place was really disorganized and the music playing was too loud and the room started smelling like B.O. . Not a great atmosphere for a restaurant. I understand this is a learning experience for the students but I fear that they’re not having the greatest mentors or education. They really need to get it together.
Honestly overall, I was really pleasantly surprised by the experience here! The food was great and especially for the price. One thing is that the service is lacking and if there's one thing to be ironed out it's definitely that, but I also understand that it's a training restaurant so hiccups are to be expected. But I would actually come back here again!
If there was a choice to put negative stars, I would. This was the absolute pinnacle of terrible customer service and terrible food. None of the associates knew how to speak English, which caused many problems, and what we were looking for was not there at all. Never attend this establishment as it’s not worth it and these people I feel very sorry for them as their paying for this learning experience but they’re being moulded into the worst possible service and not very good. Chefs of the food was terrible as well. We got served raw duck, as well as a bland, cold TANDOORI burger, and the tacos were stale and raw as well. My tiramisu was OILY and my “cocktails” had no alcohol in them.
Food was excellent. Great way to showcase the Chef de Cuisine program and students’ cooking skills. Service was poor. Service teacher does not train them nor organize the floor and service in a cogent way for the students to take food orders and serve drinks in a coherent manner. There are many student servers on the dining floor just waiting and watching. I ordered a steak medium rare and the foreign student server didn’t know what I was talking about. The same happened to the next table in our group and the chef was called out to talk to the patrons just because their server did not understand medium rare. I don’t even know if mine was medium rare. When it was served to me I was told it was medium and the chef said it was my brother who only got a medium rare. I can hardly believe that these students are paying for their servers’ diploma. There should be one person serving water to know who was served and get it all done. It was 3 different people serving water at different times to 3 different individuals at my table. It wasn’t till much later that they decided to give us a karafe. Surely one can teach better than that, especially at the foreigners’ rate. The one giving instructions was doing so, loudly. It wouldn’t matter as much if the service was good but it wasn’t. You could tell that the good intentions were there but the training and proper instruction wasn’t. They should also be taught how to respond politely. My nephew was offered a cocktail or soft drink, so he asked if there was an extra charge for the cocktails because it wasn’t indicated on the menu. The server said “Of course, there’s a charge”. Rude! And she didn’t even know it. I don’t know how they can offer a diploma unless marking is based on theory and not practical experience which is not what service is.
Our group had a great experience here as we celebrated our final day of school! The students were so courteous and attentive. The food selections were delicious. I wish they served alcohol instead of mocktails though. I had the $5 grilled octopus, $12 smash burger, and the $4 mocktail. There’s a miami key lime pie in the photos I posted (didnt taste it as I was so full already). I’d love to come back again! It was just too bad that I only discovered this two days ago. Kudos to the students!
Great food, great taste…. All about ambience. They treat the guest on such a lovely way! Service service service!
often time the services could be suck, the waiters or waitresses could be ignorant of what they are doing.
Poor customer service dont go to this garbage place
I visited the Humber Room a few weeks ago with my classmates, we ordered a salad and the steak. I must say, it was probably one of the best steaks Ive had in a while. Needless to say there were some errands as the Room is ran by students. Regardless of the mistakes, the food was great. Would visit again and recommend to friends.
Awesome dining experience with super freshly cooked food
It is good experience to visit Humber room. The prices are very economical
Good if youd like a break from the ordinary cafeteria food if you go to Humber!
Worst customer service ever!!! I called to ask about the drink menu and an employee named Julianne or Joanne answered the phone her attitude was very abrupt and rude when I asked her a few questions about what red wines are available. She didnt even bother saying goodbye and hung up on me right away. Hire proper employees with proper customer service skills and business ediquette!!
Went today with my friends who live on res. Usually when visiting we have the cafeteria food which most who have had it know its not very good, poorly prepared and lacks variety. However our experience here made the cafeteria look like a 5 star restaurant. I ordered the pasta and it was so dry that I took one bite and couldnt eat anymore. I understand these are students and that they are still learning but it is not that hard to make pasta, I cannot understand how they managed to make it that dry in the first place unless the noodles were pre-cooked and left sitting out. A quality check was not done at our table and our waiter would just leave and not return, a waitress from a different section seemed to notice that we were being neglected and she kindly tended to us instead. On top of this when we were finally asked if we wanted the bill I politely said that I did not want to be rude but I was not happy with my order and wanted to send it back (you could clearly see I had not eaten any of it except the singular noodles we had plucked out to taste test, which my friends agreed it was ridiculously dry) our waiter left and then came back and asked if we needed the bill again and didnt mention the pasta so I mentioned it once more and he left again and never came back. Then a different waiter came and asked if we needed anything and I mentioned the pasta again and he left as well (might I add that I rarely send my order back because I feel guilty if I do but this was so bad I could not even eat any of it and my friends kindly shared their food with me instead so I didnt think I deserved to pay for that as a broke student myself). Finally the kind waitress who had been the only one filling our water all evening came and asked if we needed anything so I mentioned the pasta once more for the fourth time and finally she brought a manager over so I explained my issue to the manager and she seemed quite angry that I was not happy with my dish and spoke to me in a very condescending manner and then very rudely agreed to take the item off my bill. Overall its great if you enjoy soggy pizza and bone dry pasta as well as rude managers and poor customer service...
We had issues with our meals about the potatoes not being cooked and after attempting to resolve them with the manager the situation was not resolved nor was there really any attempt. The situation was handled very poorly and I would not recommend.
Its too bad that people posted poor reviews of the Humber Room and I would recommend that you ignore them. As a professor who has worked at Humber for 18 years and has eaten at the Humber Room dozens of times, there is no other place where you can get 4-star quality food at half the downtown restaurant prices and you can trust me on this because I have eaten at the top restaurants in Toronto. The food is always top-notch because nothing leaves the kitchen until the chef instructors have approved it. My daughter has tons of allergies which we inform the manager of every time before we arrive and they always make sure to prepare the best food to accommodate my daughters allergies. Yes, its true the wait staff are sometimes slow and dont fulfill all of the requests as needed but thats because they are learning because its a teaching restaurant and when they do make mistakes, the manager and their instructor corrects them right away. I would recommend all students to eat here instead of eating the poison that they are fed in their residence and student cafeteria for almost the same price. And I would recommend all professors and families to eat here, especially for special occasions.
Good food & service
I was there to see a friend who was a student of the gastronomy program doing a dinner as part of the final exam. I cant speak about the food since the chef at that special occasion was my friend, but the place is cozy and friendly which will make me back sometime to try something.
Great lunch
Good food
The cardamom ice cream was legitimately the best ice cream I have ever had. The PEI mussels were also delicious. And the staff were attentive and friendly. The prices are also very reasonable!
it was my worst experience ever, i wish i went to a fast food place instead, wast of time 30 min to take order 30 min bring the appetizer 1hr for the food and the food smells that all i can say
10$ lunches are good for on to go! Also everything is made from the Humber food students.
There were feathers on my chicken wing. When I went to tell one of the employees she laughed and said, What do you want me to do about this WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE.!!!!!!!!
Jennifer was great. She didnt even seem to mind that my jeans were accidentally tucked into my socks. Plus it seemed like she had worked in the service industry for a while (Having done so for 10 years, I judge EVERYONE). I had a beer. It was nice.
Good stuff
Dearest Friends and Strangers Alike, Today, I wish to take you on journey, not, however, of culinary excellence. As a well rounded traveler and a keen plate, eye for quality and attention; I present to you a whimsical horror story. As the song goes, from a distance the world looks blue and green. The very same can be said for the Humber Room. From the exterior of the restaurant, it looks well maintained and like a nice place to go. Upon descending the stairs, one is presented with a sea of young wait staff. They are all happy and very nice people. I should at this time note, they are students. Happy learning in the most hands on way as possible. So their nervousness is to be expected and met with nothing, but kindness and patience. Once seated, it was about a ten minute until our waitress introduced herself and took our beverage orders. About 10 minutes later, when the drinks arrived; the lack of menus was noted and brought over in five minute span. Upon reviewing the menu, it truly is very in line with theme of the place, however, the portion sizes arent anything to fill you up with. There were a few mishaps, chicken arriving as cold as the very floor wherein the poor poultry lost its life. The dish had to be returned a number of times to get the correct order and temperature, however, the plate was free. Another mishap was simply getting the bill, it was about an hour wait for our bill to arrive. Glass after glass of water refilled, the table lay empty and we were quite ready to depart. Overall, the student-staff are wonderful and friendly. They will truly do well in the future with more practice. I only ask that they try and have more confidence in themselves, because they did a good job in a tough profession. I would rate this place a two star location and suggest only going once to experience it for yourself. For students of humber; its far better then Chartwells.
The Humber Room is incredibly delicious, it was a wonderful experience eating here. It was especially so considering we were also being served by students.
Food was ok. But the waiting time was crazy. Took 50 minutes for just the appetizers. Wouldnt recommend.
The red curry seafood was excellent and very reasonably priced. ($10) It came so quickly that I was surprised.
