Le plus vieux restaurant du vieux hull Oldest restaurant in hull
Been going there once or twice a year for 8 or 9 years now and Barbe has sadly taken a steep nosedive in terms of food quality and service. The waitress was a mess, kept forgetting everything we asked of her. 2 of our group of 8 had already finished eating their breakfast by the time the last 2 breakfasts showed up. Steak n Eggs was advertised as $19 at the door and $18 on the menu. We mentioned it and the waitress said it would be $18. Ordered it, my steak was hard as a rock and smelled of fish. Colleagues steak was blue rare. When the bill came she charged us $19.95 for each. No apologies. I lined up to pay but had to rush to the toilet because I got diarrhea... To top it all off the washroom was filthy from top to bottom. Won't be going there again.
The owner is very friendly to people who can’t really speak French. The food is also impeccable. This place truly takes care of their customers.
This is a cozy and delicious restaurant. My family loves it. We will be back again and again. The home made meat pie is simply delicious. A hidden gem in Gatineau.
Great classic breakfast, done well. good selection of egg dishes. Down to earth and quality food, quiet low key environment.
It’s one of my favourite place for the breakfast. It’s really cozy and the staff is a really nice lady who makes this place even better! Their breakfast is perfect , quality is phenomenal, they are serving one of the best fried potatoes with onions and different spices, the smoked ham and sausages are delicious too! We are always enjoying to start our days there!
A quaint and relaxing spot for breakfast. Service was very friendly and helpful. Was a great little find while out and about. Everything was cooked to the correct temps, seasoned well, tasted great!
This is my favorite breakfast place in my life. You can’t believe the price are like old price. The home made jam is so real so good. I have steak with egg . So tasty . Old antique restaurant.Old price. Good quality food. Good to go We went there when my kids was baby . Now they are professional we are very happy to go there for our memories. Thank you so much to give us so many . 🥰🥰🥰
Surprisingly good spot. For the price and location I was expecting lower quality but it turned out yummier than expected. The prices are all cheap and the food was tasty. Or hi g high quality but still good. Food was somewhat warm not hot. Lots of seating and plenty of street parking. Good spot for breakfast
Great place!
Super beautiful the girl is nice too thank you
Super good lunch restaurant in a good location. Ultra affordable prices, and 3 eggs for the price of 2 I recommend to everyone
Parking: Love the old style of the house still there since 1938 same things decir etc clean great service and nice food also like the taco omelet and the steak and eggs.!! Food
Best breakfast I ve ever had !! Love the place. Food
First time today. Great food and service. Will definitely come back.
Excellent lunch! I recommend this place, the owner is very kind and the bacon is excellent!
It s really cozy and the staff is a really nice lady who makes this place even better! And food is homemade and is really good
Great old school breakfast and lunch dinner. Dont miss the home made jam!
Very good, very nice and warm waitress, good little restaurant
great breakfast and great service
I was part of the breakfast/lunch meal that the kind man from Vancouver island paid our bill for. It was an unexpected and very touching gesture and we appreciated it more than you will ever know that day. As for the food, we all totally enjoyed our choices, the 2 teen girls loved their burger combo and club sandwich with poutine and that is high praise Our Eggs Benny special on French toast was wonderful. Lovely waitress.
The tortiere is not as good as it used to be. It was dry, overcooked, and stale. Everything else on the plate was delicious. Food
First of all - to the gentleman from Vancouver who secretly paid for our meal for our family 6, thank you so much for your kindness. It was an unexpected bit of light for us on a very difficult day. Bless you if you ever see this. The meal itself was delicious and the waitress was lovely. Everyone was very happy.
Nope last time
Lovely little diner, but not impressed by food consistency. Most of the breakfast order had issues with it: creton was frozen, soft poached eggs were rock hard, potatoes were underwhelming. Food
The place is amazing. The food was good. especially the homemade jam. Dont forget to ask for it. The price is very reasonable. There are plenty of parking spots. Its better to reserve in advance.
I didnt really like the food: baked beans with a taste of old fat, lettuce with old pieces, shriveled eggs, barely buttered bread. But kind and efficient service.
I have never ever been served by such a rude ignorant waitress Im 63 years young & was certainly raised better then that young woman I cant say lady as she is far from that so really cant say how good there food was as it completely ruined my and my guests appetite I will never ever go back to this restaurant again and if the manager or owner reads this that woman needs anger management and really isnt doing your business any favors therecwere other customers that were just as appaled as we all were its to bad as I enjoyed going there but I think they might own the Alpine on Mountain Road and Vanier and there good is just as good thank you
When entering the place there is a very bad smell of natural gas For me the service is bad. My partner, who is of Asian origin, was only served in English. Even though she ordered in French, spoke in French to the waitress... the waitress only spoke to her in English. As for the food, the other comments give a good idea of the meal.
It was cold to eat, the potatoes were half cooked and frankly not great.
If you are missing the feel of a hometown breakfast/Lunch Restaurant that Chez Barbe is the place to eat. Fantastic food, excellent service, and friendly staff. The atmosphere is relaxing, clean, and comfortable. The food is excellent, the price is very reasonable.
Went to Chez Barbe for the first time today and ordered their basic two egg breakfast for myself and the eggs Benedict for my daughter. The basis two egg breakfast was not that great. Eggs were OK, (hard to screw up fried eggs), but the potatoes were bland and the baked beans were tasteless. The eggs Benedict were just awful. The hollandaise sauce tasted horrible and the ham tasted like cheap sandwich meat. My daughter and i each tried it and neither of us could eat it. My daughter always orders this when we go out for breakfast and has never ever complained before. When I let the server know when she asked me how my meal was, she said that the other table had the same thing and thought it was fine. So much for the customer is always right! Not impressed and will not go back. My brother told me a similar story when he had steak and eggs there, or like he called it, shoe-sole and eggs. On a positive note, service was good and even though they seemed very busy, the server was pleasant and efficient.
Found an amazing spot for breakfast Easter Sunday in old Gatineau. Chez Barbe is an experience. This 85 yr old store front does not disappoint. Cannot say enough about the staff person Diane she was everything one could want. The menu is extensive and varied and the food extremely tasty. Just love this place.]
This place is dirty.
Waitress is nice and coffee isn t bad.
The service was too slow and not up to the standards. The food was average (not much can go wrong with eggs!). The waitress added the tip herself before I could (I guess she knew her service wasn t good enough). And the food wasn t cheap.
Its the perfect old school breakfast diner. With no health options and the simple menu it brings you back.
Great coffee
Good food, reasonable price and great service. No complaints here.
The food wasnt bad but I didnt like the service very much, I dont know if it was because I dont speak French (and English isnt my first language either) but from the start the waitress treated me in a dry and not very friendly way... when I paid I was waiting my change (which would have been a little more than $2) to leave a tip of $3 but simply in a somewhat mocking tone he told me that the tip would complete the $20 that I gave him... We all have our good and bad days, but working in service (something I also do) means leaving problems aside and giving the best of ourselves to the customer.
Quaint little dinner full of old fashion character. But on a hot summer day you will roast along with the old-cooked-in-advance home fries. The potential is there, but the food doesn t speak to the same home pride of the location. The bacon was bland, the home fries were stale. The french toast was soggy and undercooked in the middle. The pancake was made with biscuick, not incorporated, leaving baking powder laced pockets of bitter unpleasantness. May have once been the place, to be, but not from what my family experienced.
Very good, neighborhood restaurant.
It wasnt very good. Asked for sunny-side-up eggs, we received them well cooked, the ham was white, no fruit with lunch, salad and cucumber . The waitress also made no effort to change us after the mistake. The bacon tasted like oil. The included baked beans were not there.
Was out doing work and stopped in here with a buddy. Food was beyond great and the portion sizes compared to costs was excellent. Only downside is the area as it needs to be patrolled by police constantly. Parking: Parking is around back. Wheelchair accessibility: No
Great breakfast spot!
The best waitress!
Great food awesome service!
Great food, good portions, wonderful service! Fresh jam and a great diner vibe!
Very clean and the food is good but the welcome is not warm. The waitress seems to be nicer to English speakers, not strong, considering the neighborhood. I wont go back there.
For a neighborhood restaurant it was very good. Fast service, friendly staff and interesting atmosphere. Were going to say it to ourselves, we have a shortage of labor, were going to have to change our criteria before bitching about the service or the speed of taking out the plates. For my part, for the number of employees we dont have to fill ourselves up. As for the food, we wont hide it, its not great gastronomy like Jean Soulard, but its good and inexpensive.
Larger than it first appears. There was plenty of space for our group of six. Food was very good with homemade beans and Jam included in the meal.
It was really not good, we left really quickly to the point that the waitress made a comment to us wow are you leaving already?. The eggs were very oily, the bacon smelled like dog food and had a weird texture, the ham wasnt great, honestly we wondered if it was food from 2 days ago, no fruit, but lettuce and cucumber that didnt look fresh and the potatoes were dancing in their oil. On top of that, the coffee tasted bitter. The waitress seemed lost and asked us the same question more than once. Then seeing how the owner responds to other reviews, I kind of understand the kind of way this restaurant is run.
Very disappointed with the food. There were shells in my eggs and they were overcooked, the potatoes and bacon tasted like they had not been washed for a long time. There was a piece of beetroot with the tail on the plate. The plates gave the impression that the cook was sick of his work and was doing it to get rid of them. However, the table service was excellent. The waitress was welcoming, smiling, efficient and on task. Unfortunately, I dont think we will return unless we are informed that the cook has been replaced.
Amazing breakfast great server happy vibes here this place is a must go for breakfast if your around hull
Great little place for breakfast in the neighborhood. Solid flavors for a fabulous price.
This is one of my favorite breakfast restaurants ever. It reminds me of the small town restaurants I grew up with. I havent been here since 2018 but one of my favorite things was the insane value Id get when ordering. Trying my best to find some time visit again.
very discussing breakfast, eggs werent cooked good, bacon was very greasey, toast was really small and crunchy, not worth going there to eat, i will never go again till they change the cook, very disappointment
Delicious food. An unexpected delight.
I really enjoyed it. Lots of food for $18. Coffee was great, beans were surprisingly good. Not the biggest fan of the jam. Loved the local maple syrup with the pancake. The weird salad was fine lol. will definitely be back. The waitress was very pleasant too. Thanks for the newspaper
Phenomenal diner experience. Food was fantastic, beautiful atmosphere and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.
Great breakfasts both in quantity & quality! Awesome menu, staff, location. I couldnt recommend this place more if your in the area and are hungry or just want a coffee (wich is surprisingly good ) also Chrétien has eaten here and liked it so I figure it must be good.
Probably a bad day for this restaurant, full capacity, the staff did not provide. One of the cooks came out of the kitchen to shout to stop taking orders otherwise he would leave the place, major discomfort. The waitresses did not provide, one of the cooks constantly shouted to stop taking orders. An hour before we received our plates, quite an entertaining experience. There are not enough sugar bowls and ketchup bottles for all the customers, we have to exchange them. We receive our plates, the Hollandaise sauce is not, it is white mush with lumps which tastes like onion dip, a real stuffing. Everything was still good, but really basic. We are on vacation, so we took it all with a laugh, but a funny experience.
Loved this place! Cute little diner, super nice staff, food came out exceptionally quickly, and was fresh and delicious. Would go again if ever in Ottawa/Gatineau.
For lunches that arent too fancy and in a local atmosphere, this is the place. Decent meal, but a little expensive.
Excellent lunch!! The service is impeccable. The prices are really good.
Very good breakfast cant wait to go back very friendly staff
Great local restaurant and good value!
Not edible. Flee this restaurant.
These good
My husband and I were visiting Ottawa-Gatineau this past week and went to Chez Barbe multiple times because it was so good! Their Western omelette was particularly delicious. I ve already told friends and family, I just know I ll think about that omelette when back home and miss it!! Thanks for the great food during our visit!
Great family diner vibes. Id recommend going here as much as you can.
Food was great, our server Diane was amazing. They have a really nice homemade jam!
Chez Barbe s is a hidden gem. Huge plates of delicious food, excellent prices, fast and efficient service, and a real down home diner ambience. Had to go back the next day. Lots of locals but also tourist friendly. I highly recommend it.
Best breakfast in Gatineau
Such a great place! Went for brunch, and was not disappointed. We had the Brunch Barbe with the French toast and homemade jam. Great meal and great portions. Prices are very reasonable as well. Highly recommended!
Edit: The service was fine, had no issues with how I was served. The cook needs to be looked at however as the food is inconsistent and bland. Example the homemade hollandaise sauce taste nothing like it should. Also if youre going to reply to reviews you should stop accusing those who are being honest of being too judgmental. Introspection helps improve business.
Very cozy place, delicious breakfasts, I had breakfast there 3 days in a row, a wonderful waitress, a woman who speaks two languages fluently: English and French, if I m in Gatineau, I ll definitely visit again!
Service was great. Food was very disappointing. I took a egg Benedict on french toast and its like it was done two days before and just warmed up.
Super menu! Staff were very helpful with my friends service dog.
Generic breakfast diner but it has a pretty large menu. Can get pretty much water want for breakfast or brunch just dont expect any crazy specialty dishes. Food was good but I suspect they pre-cook their bacon in large batches and have it in bin warming, as they should to accommodate large amounts of orders, but be forewarned its cooked to black crisp ... Im sure if you asked you could get some cooked to your desire I just wasnt prepared and too lazy to reorder... Plus anytime you get your plate and ask for something redone youre pretty much asking for the spit special
I give 5 Stars to the waitress and the cook for wonderful food everything was flavorful. The diner its self was comfortable friendly.
Great breakfast diner. Authentic and nice. Prices are ok. Thank you.
Excellent service and excellent food
Such an unassuming place, both inside and out, but good breakfast and the lady at the front is pleasant. French toast benedict special for the win.
Best little hole in the wall, cheap and quick. The server is insane covering the whole place solo and she does a great job. Great English and french also
Really delicious. Nice little restaurant. I recommend.
Typical restaurant, the services are very pleasant and the dishes are very good. Brunch formula and egg specialty that I recommend.
Good food
Our favorite breakfast joint in the area. Quick service, easy parking, and the food is always good!
Food not fresh and burnt toast. They have gone down hill. Will not go back.
Cozy, comfortable place. Great prices, make sure youre hungry. Lots of food. A great place. Good prices. Make sure youre hungry. Large portions at a good price.
The breakfasts are delicious and at a good price, the place is large and its decoration makes you feel comfortable. The service is fast and friendly. They have a very delicious breakfast of La poutine with omelette.
Best lunch with memories of my father. Yes, he brought us there 40 years ago. Now Im bringing my daughter. Still delicious with great service. Congratulations to you.
The absolute best eggs benny Ive ever had! Friendly staff, casual & cozy diner. If you want real home-made food, this is it!
Good prices, large quantities, and a cosy atmosphere.
Everything about this place was off... Never again...
food is delicious, staff is very friendly . We recommend it to everyone we know. Best feels like home cooking in town !
Completely blown away by the amazing food. At first I thought it was just basic breakfast stuff but it was so much better than anywhere I ever tried. Had to order extra home fries for the kids they were that good. The decor was meh but at least it is clean and easy to get to from Ottawa.
Nice original Canadian restaurant. The waitress was amazing, but unfortunately the food is ordinary.
I have ordered online twice and was not disappointed. The Florentine eggs benedict are divine, the ham is succulent, and the homemade strawberry jam too! I also had the chance to taste their Poutine, yum! In short, for the price, the quantity of food and the delicious taste of the dishes, I recommend.
Delicious and great price. I recommend
Comfort food!!!
I love this place so many different kinds of breakfasts, extremely reasonable prices, friendly service, its exactly what would be classified as a greasy spoon. Its exactly what you pay for none less, and always a little different. I wish they would scrub the windows clean of all the paint in the windows. They should give it a rest for a while and let the sunlight come in then get them repainted with something fresh on them. The paint honestly looks awful currently.
Social distancing and use of hand sanitizer enforced which made me feel safe. Food was good and I like that it comes with coffee.
Best eggs Benedict I think Ive ever had. Super cozy place, really friendly staff. Locally owned and operated. Little gem in Old Hull
Great menu!
The food was delicious and the place was nice. The woman that serving us was super friendly. First time there and satisfy.
Great friendly service and hime cooked meals. Love it!
messy. MISLEADING IMAGES. Rotten vegetables, horribly unsanitary kitchen. Hair in the cup.
Sausage, bacon, meat pie, cretons... absolutely incredible. Couldnt choose just one item, I ordered them all. As a result, this review is being written from a washroom stall - Ill be here all day. This is my cross to bear. 5 stars.
It was a slice of nostalgia, an old fashioned diner with friendly service and good food at reasonable prices.
Great breakfast and amazing value
Cozy place just a 5 minute walk from the dentist office. Took my grandson for breakfast after his checkup. Lots of menu items to choose from. Service with a smile.
Very good, the lunches are great and the service is excellent.
Greasy spoon. Always a pleasure going here. Lots of food, fair price.
I found this restaurant while randomly walking down this street and well I wasnt disappointed at all :) The owner welcomed me warmly, had a good conversation and as for the cuisine, the pea soup is killer! (Thank you Raymond!). I also had a burger with a little poutine and a little coleslaw. No frills but good food, what more could you ask for when its -20 outside and you want to warm up :-) and on the bill side, its great too :) If I go back to Ottawa, I would come back without a problem!
Small Canadian restaurant, classic menu. Warm place. Discreet and polite service, nothing more. Food ok.
Small restaurant but very welcoming. Have a chat with our waitress Manon. Really enjoyed my meal and the visit to this restaurant.
Just cross that bridge from Ottawa and taste some french goodness.
Avoid SImply gross and greasy . And I like grease usually
Very good and delicious generous portions
We go almost once a week. Good homemade food, service is great on French and English. Prices are great and the menu has something for everyone.
Historic Spot with Good food at a great price very impressed, me and some friends came from Toronto and got excellent service.
It was ok. Food was ok and the place could use a cleaning. On the other hand very friendly staff.
Good place, ugly raisin pie
well not everyone has the same taste, but for me, food was oily, pancakes looks crunchy but full of oil.
Good services and good attention!
Bread was moldy. Fruit stale.
Was disappointed by their hollandaise (white cheese sauce that was lumpy and bland) their soggy potatoes and limp veg sides. Good coffee.
Very friendly atmosphere, and good service. The food was delicieux!!!
Excellent food with a cozy atmosphere to have a large affordable breakfast. Staff is friendly and welcoming.
Good food. Good service. No air conditioning which would be nice.
When we came here it was rather warm inside, so made it a little uncomfortable. However, we had a great breakfast for a great price! Would come back again
Its a great place, with large portions, fabulous and friendly service. Good value.
Really good food that is affordable. I recommend any of the eggs bennies.
This place is infested with ants and the service is super slow. We waited about an hour to get our food and my plate was still missing items. The menu is overpriced for what you get.
The bacon was rancid. Toast was burnt.we both left with tummy aches. Told server who was nice but said no one complained ..n gave me sausages which were greasy and gross. I hate leaving bad reviews. But I feel ill now and thought I should
Good food .. great for its price
I do not recommend this place. Very very bad experience. Very very slow service. Terrible food. The eggs were cold. Tomato, cucumber, melon, pineapple not fresh. Burnt toast. Im going to stop on this but clearly we threw away money.
Nice place, I recommend the great eggs benedict which was delicious!
This kind of places should be rewieved properly. We choose this place because of the rating in tripadvisor. Its dirty, and smelling bad food and dish. It wasnt full all the tables still you have to wait ca 7 minutes to get the menus, another 10 minutes to order and more thanl 30 minutes for an omelette and egg. There is a serious stress and hectic among the waiters , you feel really bad while seating. Its a terrible place!
Amazing and very friendly owner. Canadian breakfasts.
I wouldnt recommend this place at all
Very very good old rest but very good. Come visit like at home ok
Great service with a good breakfast too good job guys
This building is very old. As in it was built when people were much shorter on average, so watch your head if youre tall. Im average height, so i had a great time. The tortiere wasnt as good as my moms, but how many breakfast places have tortiere anyways? Their homemade jam is way better than any jam my mom has made though, and you can even buy jars of it to take home!
Wow.. what a place.. waited for 20 min in a VERY hot dining room with babies, and decided to leave as no one had even bothered to say hi... They werent even busy! We were one of may be 4 tables. Aweful experience
Solid breakfast and a great value! Friendly staff as well. Potatoes under seasoned is the only flaw here.
If you are looking for a place to have lunch in the old town try Chez Barbe. Good and not expensive
Excellent meal very fast very good price and very good service XXXXX are PRO there
Yummy and good service. I ordered the vegetarian eggs Benedict
Seems like a strange place at first but it s really nice! Highly recommend the Eggs Benedict. The waitress was really nice too.
Very good portions at low prices and good quality. Lovely staff
Ordinary, greasy. Not bad, but the kids didnt like it.
Friendly service and delicious food
Everything is excellent
My favourite weekend breakfast place.
Food came quickly. Service was efficient. Good value.
Great place for a variety of cooked eggs
Price is good. The food is ok though. Dont be surprised if something on your order is off either. Its never anything big, usually just a minor detail. Its definitely worth what you pay. Ill likely go back.
Absolutely delicious
Very welcoming and cozy. The food was very good and the quantity is certainly very generous. I was pleasantly surprised.
Cozy and cute atmosphere. Great food.
Excellent lunches and service, good prices, great!
