At the Broken English Bistro we provide delicious, quality meals just like grandma used to make. Our dishes originate from European recipes sure to please even the pickiest eaters. Our offerings change daily so grab the family and try something different today.
Love this little gem! Ordered cabbage rolls, chicken schnitzel, coleslaw, mashed potato with gravy, hot Earl Grey tea! Everything was just like gramma used to make! The sauce for the cabbage rolls was perfectly balanced. Yes! We will be back!
We were excited to try this little gem after reading the reviews so we drove from Hamilton. One of the worst experiences I have ever had . We didn't know whether we just grab a table or had to order at counter and then grab a table so we asked and the one lady took us to a table and wiped it off but did not give us a menu nor even take a drink order just complained about how busy it had been since opening that day. We sat there 10 minutes unnoticed so we asked for a menu. She gave us menus but still never asked if she could get us a drink. Another party of four came in and sat down. Five more minutes and another 5 people came in. After 20 minutes of being ignored she served the people that came in 10 minutes after us once again ignoring us. We got up and walked out the door and they didn't even notice. For all they knew we could have been leaving without paying or something. (We didn't even get so much as a glass of water.). So ignored again on our way out the door we will never go back! We took our business elsewhere! It is too bad because if it was good we would have come back another time with friends but I would not even recommend this place after their terrible service, or should I say lack of service that we received .
I drive by this place everyday on my way to work and always wondered about it. Well we went there last week and LOVED our experience. Definitely recommend the pierogis and cucumber/dill salad together! So delicious we went back this week (I also recommend the schnitzel on a bun) Beautiful patio and wonderful staff.
This place is definitely worth driving from the other side of town for. I absolutely LOVED the pierogies, and was pleasantly surprised by how well the cucumber salad went with it (it was recommended). The interior is so bright and beautifully decorated. The woman who served us was so kind. I was tempted to buy some frozen pierogies to bring home but I think idrrather just come back and have it made proper for me again! I cannot recommend this place enough!
Wonderful home cooked Polish food. Excellent for dine in or home made goods to take home. A lovely bistro that deserves to be your next stop.
Oh how we love this Bistro so much! All the food we had was so delicious and they really made us feel at home! The perogies were so yummy and just the right texture, the schnitzel was very well seasoned, the desserts were out of this world! And the beautiful server and owners were so sweet to us, they even gave our son 2 yummy chocolate cakes which he swallowed up whole! This is definitely our new favourite spot just close to home and we plan on coming often to support their business!!! Oh yes also please try the import beer, it was very light and delicious 🤤 and paired well with our perogies!
Very cute place with a home-y atmosphere. The menu contains Eastern European classics like pierogies, schnitzel and cabbage rolls. It's also nice that there are a variety of sides you can choose from. I especially loved the pierogies! Super flavorful and you can tell that it's homemade. Staff is friendly and the timing is decent considering it's made fresh. Surely coming back to try other items on the menu.
Delightful spot in town which deserves to be much better known. Authentic home cooked Polish cuisine. Pierogies and more frozen and available to take home. Great, focused menu. Welcoming staff, lovely atmosphere for a casual meal with friends and family. Don't miss this great local, family restaurant!
Nice quaint family run bistro with excellent food and service
6 out of five. This is truly a lost art in our culinary diversirty and needs to be supported. An incredible experience in service and quality.
We just bought coffee but the service and the people were very nice. Our Latte and Cappuccino tasted very nice and aromatic. Must visit place in Guelph.
Delicious home-cooked style food. Very friendly staff. Very cosy!
The BEST place in Guelph for incredibly delicious European food. We ordered Cabbage rolls, white borsch (INCREDIBLE) pierogies and chicken shnitzel and everything was TOP notch. Prices are on the low side which is great. Service and patio where perfect. ABSOLUTELY recommend Food
Called broken English but all the food is Polish/German. Very disappointed as an English man in Canada
Excellent.
Stopped here for a coffee and stayed for lunch. Wow food was amazing!! We will definitely be back.
Showed up an hour before close to grab dinner while Im in town after hearing about how good the food was. They were completely sold out for the day with plenty of time before they closed. What a shame. I have had very few experiences with restaurants turning away customers for having nothing to feed them like that.
Great food Great people Food
We have been here many times. Always great food and the nicest staff. Goulash is fantastic!
First time dining at Broken English. Have driven by so many times and wondered what type of food they serve. Googled and found out is Polish food. My wife and I drove over and a parking spot easily enough. We started with Caesar salad and beet salads. I had the White Borscht soup which had potato dollops and sausage with a sprinkle of fresh dill. It was satisfying and delicious. I had the Gypsy Schnitzel which comes with a rich mushroom gravy and mashed potato. My wife ordered the regular Schnitzel also with mashed potato and a fresh lemon wedge. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We took home a frozen split pea soup and cheese and potato pierogies. They also have Tripe soup which I am looking forward to trying. I can confidently recommend this restaurant. Cheers
I Had the pork schnitzel on a bun....tender and breaded perfectly...I had to indulge with a Napoleon pastry....left full and happy...
Great authentic Polish food..Delicious.
My wife and I had a late lunch here ( first visit ). She had the 9 piece pierogi meal and I the hunters schnitzel. Both were very tasty. Service was warm and friendly. All and all a lovely meal and definitely will return.
Nice food & service
Everything on the menu is not always available
Have had Hunter Schnitzel with fries and beet salad. Super fresh and high quality as well as big size of portion. Congrats to Chef, he is doing great job. Will come back soon. Please say hello to friendly blond lady who is serving the food. Parking: located in small plaza.
Best Perogies
Family style restaurant, small but cozy, decent food
The food is good quality. I ordered the schnitzel sandwich. The size of the pork was very thin and small. Please add more meat. The sandwich was 75% bread.
Amazing local spot! Incredible food made by wonderful people! Beautiful patio and the best pierogies Ive ever had. Hidden Gem in Guelph, cant wait to go back!
The pierogies are so good.
Homemade food. Clean and quiet place. Good, friendly service. Try the desserts!
Great and friendly owners. Delicious schnitzel. Will be back again :) Food
We drove past this place many times before finally trying it while our kitchen was out of commission during renovations. It has become one of our favourites! The food is always delicious and the service friendly.
They have a small menu. The food is average. Ordered sausage meal. The sausage was very dry, the Caesar salad was not good. Won t recommend it.
Goulash is served over frozen deep fried hashbrowns ( THE KIND YOU BUY AT THE GROCERY STORE) cucumber salad is not fresh. Woman who takes your order is curt. Nice garden area but food is mediocre and over priced Parking: Limited spaces small lot
What a great find! So sweet! What a patio! And we agree that the pierogies are incredible.
Classic Mom & pop bistro with outstanding dishes and great pricing. Looks all staff are family members, super friendly people but can be a bit overwhelmed by the work load. Please bear with them, the food worth it. Definitely a hidden gem in Guelph. Parking: Small plaza with about 20 parking spots
The food was delicious! Will absolutely come back again. The pierogies were incredible.
Very tasty food. Staff was friendly.
Absolute gem. Would give more than 5 stars if I could.
Such a cute place, with amazing food and friendly service. And I got to practice my Polish! Try the jurek (white borscht), served in a round loaf of bread. So delicious!
If youre looking for a tasty heart warming meal of quality eastern European food this is it. Highly recommend to anyone looking for the best soup in town!!
Im not sure how I have never heard of this place. Today was my moms birthday so I wanted to take her out, we are Croatian and mom loves the Slavic food. So my wife looked up european restaurants in Guelph and this place came up. Just around the corner from our home, we took mom for lunch. Wow! What a great experience! The restaurant is small but very quaint and VERY clean. I ordered pierogies, my wife had the goulash and mom had the schnitzel. Everything was delicious and the presentation was immaculate. Plus they have nice Polish beer!!! We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back. They have a large patio that we can just imagine is beautiful in the summer. We will definitely be back soon!!! Nazdravlje!
Excellent Food Very friendly
Lovely little place, great schnitzel, and really nice owners
I had an aunt who would spend an entire weekend making a massive batch of perogies from scratch when she finally finished like 18 hours later and would serve them to us with bacon and sauteed onions and a gigantic dollop of sour cream, OMG they were the best perogies I had ever had; I never tried to make them personally, but I have also never found a restaurant or place to buy them, that could compare to my aunts... Until I had the perogies at Broken English Bistro! They are the best perogies Ive ever had since my aunts! I definitely recommend Broken English Bistro.
My husband brought some perogis home from here and they were incredible delicious. Will be purchasing again next time we are in the area. Excellent customer service as well
Delicious food lovingly prepared with care like home made. Great customer service. Desserts that melt in your mouth. Cant wait for fair weather to eat on the patio. Local hidden gem!!
SO GOOD!! If you LOVE garlic, try the Caesar salad! My faveeeee
Food is delicious! We love this restaurant
The food was just excellent and very tasty. Friendly service. At this time they accept cash or debit only. No credit cards.
Went for lunch today with my wife and sister in law and what a lunch it was. we tried several different dishes and they were all delicious. Friendly family run restaurant serving traditional fresh homemade polish food. A gem of a place we found in Guelph. Highly recommended for real foodies.
Great Polish schnitzel and friendly service!
Good food and service
Good food, very nice grandma
Progress are excellent, schnitzel meal dry and plain, cucumber salad goòd. Very disappointed having to buy bottled water, not told in advance.
Literally THE BEST Pirogies Ive ever had. Such a sweet family owned business!
The way the staff treat you is amazing an I try to go always this food is amazing.
Since the onset of COVID , I havent been doing much of the restaurant circuit. Tonight on good advice we ordered Polish food from a little Bistro very close to home. Ive been hankering for schnitzel for months and Guelph no longer has any German or related dining spots. So last we had a great schnitzel meal it was in the Conestogo area. Now the Polish make schnitzel with pork evidently that was a surprise. Not that it was any less delicious. Served up with choice of salads and mashed taters! Everything made from scratch. I love that dont you? They sell Polish beers if youre so inclined and have a few deserts to mull over. Dont skip them if you have room. So yummy. I had Apple crumble cake. Next time Ill snap a photo before I scarf it down.
What a lovely place. The food was great and the people were lovely. The patio was comfortable, save the beer was very good.
Excellent little east European bistro! Highly recommend the pierogies. Friendly service.
Best perogies I have ever had, quick service, kind staff, and a true at home feel. Highly recommend.
Amazing food,so fresh.
Amazing schnitzel and pierogies. Truly homemade with very flavourful ingredients at a great price. Do yourself a favour and support this small business by eating here!!
Delicious Schnitzel and side dishes. Love the Beet Salad. Oh! And that Mushroom Gravy, delicious.
Classic European polish spot. Perogies were great, service was friendly. House sausage were good too. Only thing their potato pancakes are just hash browns haha but everything tasted great. They re takeout items are good too. While we were there lots of people were coming in for takeout.
Very nice little location and the food had lots of flavour! The schnitzel sandwich I was impressed with because it had good seasoning on the meat! The perogies were delicious as well (maybe a little more salt was needed but delicious overall) great service and place was clean!
The food was great and the staff super friendly. We will be back soon
Good Home Made European dishes. If you love shnitzel, pierogies, or Ghoulash you will want to visit Broken English Bistro That is exactly what we ordered and everything looked and tasted like your grandmother made it. Hand made with love, and full of the flavour you expect from a great home made meal. The Schnitzel comes with mashed potatoes and gravy, and a side salad. The Ghoulash also comes with a salad. The Options we chose are beet salad, cole slaw, and cucumber salads. Prices are Very affordable, and the portions are fantastic. You will not go hungry. This is a place that needs to be on your radar for regular take out orders. The people are very friendly and were very appreciative of our business.
Part of the Friday night routine now. Friendly staff and great food.
Lovely food
March 2021: Takeout, schnitzel and a dessert; delicious!! July 2, 2020: Had dinner here again; we love their outdoor patio! Not too close to the road. Enjoyed the food. Spring 2019: Five of us (friends, seniors) had lunch here and all loved the food. it was a nice day so we sat on the patio in shade. Reminds me of Europe in many ways. Friendly service. Not a big menu but enough options. The cabbage rolls and perrogies especially are superb. The schnitzel (thin fried pork or chicken) was very good too. Aug, 4: Had dinner here with my wife and friends, on the patio. A hot evening but plenty of shade here, plus umbrellas. She also loved the schnitzel, beet salad and desert. This place deserves to be discovered by more people. Aug. 31: had dinner here again with a group of four on the patio and enjoyed it. The schnitzel and the ywiec beer were delicious.
Great food thank you! Will be back
Food was very good. Looking forward to going again when we can eat in.
Schnitzel is amazing, you wont want to miss out on a meal here
Tried to support a local business yesterday. Stood in front of the til for over 20 minutes waiting to order. Never once looked up at the three people waiting in line to even say we are busy please wait a moment. I would have happily ordered and came back an hour later to pick up, had I been given the chance. Rude.
Great European meals
The food is amazing, love every bite but tonight when we asked to buy extra ceaser dressing got hassled that we got enough and then when we asked for extra sour cream got told no we dont do that and refused to sell extra sour cream. Also while trying to buy the condiments we bought 2 deserts and and extra salad. Spending $55.00 plus tip and refused condiments doesnt make sense.
The food is exelent ....!!!
Great food, great people, lovely patio thats not on the street
Loved it, the homemade pierogies were fantastic.
Friendly service and great food at reasonable prices
Great customer service
Does not endorse segregation. What a place!
Amazing! Couldnt believe we had never gone before.
Great food and very friendly owners
The absolute best. I get cravings every little while for their pierogie dinner and cabbage rolls. Anytime I ve gone in person the owners are so friendly and warm. You will love it!!
Amazing Polish comfort food in the north end of Guelph with a wide selection of Polish staples. It wasnt busy from a Saturday which was a shame because this family run restaurant deserves more love from the community! The owners were very friendly and despite the patio being closed for the season they let us sit there. The restaurant feels very cozy and is decorated with traditional Polish patterns and clothing. The menu has a mix of salads, schnitzel and pierogies. We ordered a little bit of everything (e.g. goulash, schnitzel, cabbage rolls and pierogies). All good comes as a combo where you get a two small sides. For the schnitzel you have a choice of pork or chicken. I got the pork and found it to be very tender and lightly breaded. They ran out of cucumber salad which I wish I got to try so I opted for the ceasar salad instead. Pierogies were delicious with the bacon bits sprinkled on top. And the star was the coleslaw! It was nice and creamy and well balanced. They have great outdoor seating and a very cute patio. Staff is friendly and service is quick.
Such a lovely little bistro. The perogies were fresh and hot with bacon and onion. I highly recommend the beet salad but the cucumber and dill was good too as a side. They offer take out and frozen items too. I took some frozen cabbage rolls with me! I will be back to try more dishes.
Finally had a chance to try out Broken English. We ordered takeout, which was ready right on schedule. I had the pork schnitzel, potatoes and cucumber salad, with a side of pierogi. Everything was fresh and tasty. Schnitzel was perfect and with a slice of lemon as I like it. The cucumber salad was unique and perfect. Pierogi we re right on! We also took home a frozen order of cabbage rolls, which no doubt will be great. Thank you!!
Very cute small business with AMAZING polish food, decor and people! You can get food for sit down or take out, or even purchase premade meals to cook later. Definitely try the pierogies!!
Great pork schnitzel and pierogies and friendly service
Very pleased with this restaurant. I have eaten here about five times now and tried most menu items. The food quality is very good and the owners are friendly and professional. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. Limited menu, but I dont consider that a bad thing.
Great tasting authentic food. Will return soon.
Really nice place with great food, drinks and desserts! The waitress was fantastic and the folks running the kitchen were incredibly kind. Some of the best Polish food Ive had in Ontario. I would highly recommend this place.
It was fantastic!
On of the the best places I have eaten at in a while. Small with good service friendly staff and really good food !
Came down for dinner from Kitchener. The food was great and worth the wait! The service was incredible and the actual restaurant was cosy and clean. I would definitely recommend eating here.
Great food! Lovely owners.
Home cooked and delicious
It was my first time ordering and the staff was friendly and helpful. The food is homemade and delicious. I ordered the Schnitzel on a bun and Pierogies and both were absolutely delicious. If you are looking to support a local mom and pop shop I recommend Broken English Bistro!
A very homey touch and wonderful meals. A traditional And unique Bistro. I like!
Amazing Food! Love the awesome patio! Super chill vibe!
DELICIOUS pierogies. Best Ive ever had
Yummy. Only 4 stars cause it was our first time. Will bump it up after another great meal.
Good food, nice people.
Tucked away in Guelphs North end, a European flavour & a beautiful patio & good homemade food
Great food! Good home cooking! Owners are very nice, you can feel the love in the food! Pierogies and the hunters schnitzel was fantastic!
I had a big craving for perogies last night. My local search led me to takeout from Broken English Bistro. These homemade perogies were delicious. The beet salad was also top notch!
The pierogies are incredible! The owners are very friendly as well!
Lovely homemade food, very authentic Polish cuisine. Service was great, and the atmosphere was also really nice. Ill be back.
Delicious handmade perogies, sausage and schnitzel. Clean open servery. Casual sit down diner. Friendly, polite service and a great European style Napoleon for dessert. The custard was divine and made locally and brought in from a bakery. I would visit this place for another home cooked meal anytime!
Amazing perogies, schnitzel, and perogies.
Great spot, good value, DELICIOUS food
Great food
We just had Broken English for dinner with the entire family! My two kids loved it. Hubby had the beef goulash, I had cabbage rolls, kids had schnitzel and pierogies. Everyone was ecstatic with their food. Hubby even asked for a beet salad to go!!
Wonderful ethnic food done right! A little pricey but very tasty.
Great place with authentic polish bistro!
Very good staff polite and attentive...clean atmosphere great meals..always very friendly and inviting faces
Goulash beef with potatoes had good potatoes and their cucumber salad was refreshing.
Excellent food!
Excellent. Service and better food. Pierogies and cabbage rolls rocked. Will return over and over. Loved it
Amazing little spot. Very friendly staff and food was very authentic. Must try the Pierogies and Apple Cake!!!
Great food tiny place
Love this place! Very lovely atmosphere and the food is excellent. Had the pierogies and they did not disappoint.
Great German and polish food
The food here was exceptional and authentic.
Took a Polish friend to lunch! The food! The beer! The Deserts! He was impressed !! He should know! Can t wait for warmer weather to eat outside!
Consistently good authentic polish food served by friendly people
Quite nice, nice outdoor patio
Great food. A simple but delicious menu and service that was attentive without being stifling.
Great Patio, People and Pierogies!
My husband and I decided to give the Broken English Bistro a try on a recent Friday evening. Weve both driven by the small restaurant, located in a small plaza, numerous times and were curious. The patio, unfortunately, wasnt open yet despite the beautiful weather so we had a seat in the small dining area. The menu is on a chalkboard along the back wall, and parts of it change daily. I opted to get the cabbage rolls meal with the side of cucumber salad and mashed potatoes (that days side). My husband opted for the potato and cheese pierogies with a very garlicky Caesar salad. I had a clementine San Pellegrino (very nice!) and my husband had a Corona (we recognized only 2 of the imported beers - there were 4 we hadnt heard of). My husband wasnt blown away by his pierogies but I thought they presented well! There were 9 pierogies on the plate, topped with sour cream, bacon and chives. My cabbage rolls were to die for! Each bite just melted in my mouth and I wished I had more than the two rolls that came! The cucumber salad was nice, similar to one I make for myself at home. The mashed potatoes werent fancy by any means but that wasnt why I ordered what I did! We will definitely be back - Im wanting more of those cabbage rolls and Im very curious about the beef goulash as well!
Meaty cabbage rolls. Always delicious
Really good authentic Polish cuisine. Should have arrived sooner then just before closing in order to taste all that they offer, as there was a limited selection because it was so close to closing. What we had was delicious. Pork schnitzel, mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, beet and ceasar salad and pierogies were awesome. Next time we will arrive earlier to taste what was sold out.
Food was great
One of the best places to eat in Guelph, truly a hidden gem! Amazing staff, comforting atmosphere and the schnitzel is out of this world.
Amazing service, food and decor. Beautiful patio too.
Excellent food and service!
Really good food. Well go back for sure
This is a great little Bistro in the city of Guelph. I got a pork schnitzel sandwich. The pork has a very light batter and the bun is very fresh and good bread so the sandwich is delicious. The place is clean, the service was fast and the food is very tasty at a low price. One of the best places around for a casual meal.
Excellent food, quick and simple
One of the best polish restaurants in the area. Although the menu for this place is relatively small they always have a variety of delicious polish dishes. So far I have tried the schnitzel sandwich which was delicious and filling, The cottage cheese pierogies which were perfectly fried and topped with crispy bacon, I also tried two of Thier soups which were of course delicious. Another great thing about the resturant is the modern and upscale decor, complete with a spacious outdoor patio. Overall a great resturant if youre looking to try polish food.
Good food
This was quite good place ladies working inside were really awesome and respectful
This little bistro is wonderful!
Nice polish restaurant. Good perogies and sausage. Excellent service very clean and a nice patio.
Somehow Ive never been here- today was our first visit and it wont be our last. Welcoming place-friendly staff Fast service and delicious food. Spotlessly clean and perfect record on check before you choose!!
Amazing food & and awesome service.
Great food, great staff, great experience! Definitely coming back
Small family run. Limited menu but good food.
Taste like homemade but better cause you didnt have to make it.
Excellent Schnitzel here. Way better food than the common pub you see downtown. Food is fresh and high quality. Cozy atmosphere.
Delicious and great value! Well be back.
Went here for a family function and the food was great. I wish there was a change table though in the washroom, and more than 2 highchairs. Otherwise it was a great place to go .
food is delicious but the last couple times the service has been terrible. last time we waiting 20 minutes before someone came and spoke to us. the table beside us walked out because the server went to the table that sat down third before us and another table that had already been waiting ten minutes.... the worst part is since its small you can see the servers for whatever reason ignoring that you its fine well come back for the food just dont expect a tip if youre not going to provide a service, lol from server-server your table should be greeted with-in the first 2 minutes.
Casual and small. Good food in a relaxed atmosphere. Exceptionally clean
The most expensive frozen pierogies I have ever bought
A wonderful afternoon with friends. Great food!
Tasty good good eats
Great food and lovely people! The pierogies are awesome!
Good food, clean & updated location. It was smokey inside, but tolerable. The coleslaw was great. Schnitzel on a bun was a hearty size. (You should expect to pay more than grocery-store prices for the take-home frozen food because its made in-house and not a massive factory with heaps of sodium.)
