5236 Blowers St, Halifax, NS B3J 1J7, Canada
It is a hit or miss in this location when it comes to maintaining the taste. I get to see a new person every once in a while when I go there. Very few are able to maintain the taste. Recently, met an Indian working there and she made a poutine that was nothing but a runny soup. Too much gravy and everything combined. This location went from 50/50 to more like 30/70, where 7 out of 10 times the taste and consistency is jeopardized. I am a big fan of smokes poutinerie but because of the continous bad experience at this location, I am going to avoid it.
Im from Quebec i know alot about poutine i payed for a WOW size and the poutine was dry barely any sauce and cheese .. you must put a fair amount of sauce and cheese for a good poutine without paying extra money.. i think its unfair
Our fries were made fresh to order. Small space to eat indoors was a plus. A medium traditional poutine served two of us. Lots of gravy. Plenty of squeaky cheese.
On a recent visit to Halifax, this was my first experience with poutine. I actually found it quite tasty. The fries were a bit on the mushy side, but what can you expect after topping them with delicious brown gravy? I did find the gravy absolutely delicious and there was a generous amount of squeaky cheese curds and ultimately topped with bacon. I can feel my left ventricle slamming shut right now!
My least favorite Poutine in Halifax. The fries and gravy taste stale and cheap. The price is a bit high for the lack of quality. I have been a few times and won't be back. Staff are always very friendly and quick, the restaurant is always clean which is great!
Huge portion, very tasty, fast prepared, affordable and in a good location. They are open almost all day long and you can expect the same quality every time you come. I had Buffalo chicken poutine and it was very good. There were not so many people and I could comfortably eat my meal in the restaurant.
I get that places have promotions, which is great....but when you don't have anything for them/run them anymore, stop promoting them. Asked for 4 different types of poutine before saying screw this and went with their basic menu. Their spicy chicken poutine was horrible, no flavor at all...had just ask much pickled jalapeño as canned roasted red peppers, almost nothing for Sriracha and flavorless gravy...it'll I was still there when eating it i would've asked for 3 salt packs and maybe 3 or 4 pepper packs with side Sriracha. The other kicker was not only did I end up paying $12 for this garbage bit I bought a snack pack of fries for my girl's, they actually had a hell of a lot more fries then what I had. The customer service wasn't pleasant what so ever. They use to be fantastic, now I wouldn't recommend to anyone and even explains why they stopped being best of halifax as of 2018.
I ordered a traditional poutine and a boneless wings, the poutine was tasted as good as usual, even I’m not a big fan of poutine I’ll still go back sometimes. Today was my first time trying their boneless wings, unfortunately it was super cold inside. I got six or seven wings but they were all cold, so maybe not gonna go back for the boneless wings in the future... (Forgot to take a pic of the wings tho)
I only went because Willies was closed. They want a lot of money for some potatoes. Pulled pork was still cold. Weak
Great and uniquely varied takes on poutine. Nice atmosphere.
One of the worst poutine I ever had in Halifax taste and quality is cheap,in stead of this try Willys poutine which is much better in taste and quality for lesser price
Costco poutine better. For real though, this place has poutine in the name and you can get better poutines for half the price at Costco. Terrible fries and lacklustre amount of cheese curds. Do better.
Best poutine this side of Québec. Classic, always good, you can make it flashy with other ingredients. Which is nice, but not necessary for the traditionalists who have Québecois blood (like me). The only drawback is that the seating area is small. But I understand it, this is truly a walking food.
ayush best employee so considerate very helpful kind and caring thank u ayush
The bacon cheeseburger poutine is delicious. The prices are affordable and the service is fast and courteous. I ate it on Halifax Harbour. The atmosphere is just great. Vegetarian options: There were vegetarian poutine choices.
Loved it a takeaway on the boardwalk in Halifax Nova Scotia which is a lively vibrant place
Extremely expensive and not coming back
It is edible, but far from delicious.
Bad taste food
Very dirty. Multiple hairs in poutine. Bathroom is extremely dirty and sketchy.
I guess when you eat here sober, you realize the taste that the poutines lack nowadays. I asked about baked potatoes, Was told they take too long to cook, So basically don t order it. I got a bacon Poutine, Fries were mushy, None of it had taste. It was like salt was eliminated from everything. The gravy was almost nonexistent. This place used to be the go to, But I made the mistake of coming here And not Rocky s.
sad to say that i really didn t enjoy the food. the grilled chicken breast was just some white bland chicken cubes .. nothing grilled. the jalapeños where mushy and tasteless. i had ordered the spicy chicken poutine. and the whole thing - fries included - was drenched in artificial tasting gravy. i get that the gravy mix is actually part of the dish (and it s my personal taste that doesn t enjoy it) but the ingredients were just sad and not tasty at all
Smokes is awesome. Great service and amazing food!!
Ordered a poutine with pickles. It arrived covered in jalapeños. I called them because I thought they maybe were confused and was told that no, they were out of pickles so for everyone who orders pickles they are putting jalapeños instead. I told them that s not a good idea as jalapeños are spicy and the employee did not care. I told her the poutine is ruined now since I can t eat spicy food and she said maybe call back and talk to the manager. Not only is this moronic, but it s dangerous as people have allergies.
I wish I could rate one star. I had a paid purchase, and they would not allow me to use the washroom that was visible. North America is a subpar continent compared to the rest of the planet. I am pregnant and was attempting to apply the courtesy of at least purchasing food from this restaurant. Halifax has no rules at this point. It is completely lawless. This city should be condemned.
While visiting the Halifax waterfront, I was excited to try my first poutine. I ordered the traditional version, which was served with freshly prepared fries and a generous serving of gravy and cheese curds. However, I must say I was a bit put off by the flavor of rosemary in the gravy. I felt sure that was not authentic, and I looked at the Smokes website and saw that the rosemary is indeed a special addition of theirs. I dont recommend it, unless you really love rosemary.
Came in to buy a poutine and they wouldn t let me use the washroom!? And no explanation just no. Rude and poor customer service
Flavorful gravy plus cheese curds and hot fries! It s a great Canadian snack to share on a chilly day. Fast service and yummy!
Friendly staff!
We havent tasted worse food in the last many years... Wasted $22! I can t imagine what you need to do with potatoes to ruin them like that!!
Both times I ve been there they gave me the wrong order and tried charging me twice (the first time they actually did). Their night crew is horrible. GO TO WILLYS INSTEAD! The lineup is bigger there for a reason. *they steal money from the drunk people who go there at night
Overpriced and low quality. It was about $17 for a single poutine. It didn t taste bad but it didn t taste good either - definitely not worth $17. If you re looking to get a plain poutine get one at Costco for $6.99 - it s a bigger portion size, better quality, and it tastes better. If you re looking for add-ons like meat etc. this would be a good place for you. It has lots of customizing options. I had the bacon poutine, the fries weren t great tasted almost stale and the gravy was meh, the bacon was pretty low quality, think McDonald s bacon quality. It said double smoke bacon, however, it was very cheap, thin slices that weren t even crispy. Definitely not worth the price. If you re drunk or high or just craving poutine this ll probably hit the spot at least somewhat. I ve had better for cheaper, but never one this expensive.
Bland gravy. Soggy fries. Small portions for the money.
Food is great, lots of topping choices. Service is great and food comes fast.
If you want bland poutine soup, this might be for you.
I ll never come back again. Don t know which one s hfx s best poutine but here s definitely the worst ever. Ordered a chickens shawarma poutine and a poutine without cheese but got two same traditional poutine. Btw if the owner ever see this then can I get my tips back???
When paying $19 for a poutine, and the medium to small poutine at that. I expect more meat and possibly better quality gravy instead of just from a can / bag. With that much of a meet selection on the menu you should be able to have at least a 50/50 mix of homemade gravy versus canned / baked.
For some reason Google Lonnie says theres one or two one stars but theres more than that
Its because of places like this that i now only buy poutine in qc. Curds arent that fresh, gravy is too thick and fries are meh.
If you eat in they tend to pile it on because they dont have to close the cover . Very yummy.
There isnt much to say, the cheese and fries were pretty good but the gravy tasted pretty flat and flavorless so i didnt enjoy it.
Underwhelming, dry and overpriced; I believe this is the standard and not an anomaly based on multiple visits. They need to change their packaging so it s easier to mix up, improve the fries, and increase the cheese portion (I honestly didn t taste it/ remember it) to justify the $17 price point
Not time punctual
walk across the street much better!!
If you want poutine then this is your place. What makes Smokes so good is the various amount of poutines that you could buy comparied to other places. Parking: Parking availability depends on the time of day since its street side parking.
The cashier was very polite and efficient, but $13 for a small poutine that is tiny, is crazy and i would not go back. Instead, go to Willies across the street where a large is $15 and will taste so much better.
The poutine was good but the staff were very loud between the front and the back, they were kicking around containers. My partner and I couldnt even have a conversation. This was a Saturday night between 9-10pm
Understandable its busy but their gravy is bland and cheese is not melted
The poutine was good but almost broke my tooth when I bit into it and found a rock in my food!!!
Went in at 10 and it was just one guy by himself doing it all and he nailed it. Food came out really quick, only thing holding it from 5 stars is the price.
This was the worst poutine I ve had in my life. If you want a poutine that doesn t have soft fries, cold gravy, raw peas, and cold chicken, go across the street to willies. I ll never go back again.
Such tasty, more quantity :)
It was just ok and only because the donair sauce super chilled the poutine on me which made it lesser. Really wish they had bigger sizes for that price point comparing to others
I went in and got myself the Avalanche Poutine for lunch one day. The cashier was attentive and helpful, and the food was good. I recommend visiting if you have a poutine craving that needs fixing.
I got a boneless chicken wing poutine and a junkyard dog poutine; The poutines they delivered were smaller than they look in the photo, about 4 1/2 by 3, they were both cold and soggy, unedible to eat. they forgot our pops as well, so gotta credit for that through Doordash not worth $50.00. And Doordash wouldnt give a full refund. Decided to try something new with this place and came back disappointed. If you want great poutine, try charger burger. Bigger, tastier and cheaper.
Went here for the first time... was not happy... for 40$ received 2 poutines with toppings and 1 small poutine ... once getting back to our place we noticed that there was little sauce , black potatoes (multiple), raw bacon, dried edges on the chicken cubes and was very salty. The pork was good. But the bacon and quality of the potatoes used for their fries were disgusting. I ended up throwing away over half our food because we were put off with the black fries and raw bacon, and by the time this was all coming into focus they hqd already closed. Honestly it was not at all worth the money and i dont recommend this place. Youre better off going somewhere else.
In the attached picture you can see their butter chicken sauce which was sort of like a crispy spicy burnt leather sort of thing. Just a really disappointing and frankly disgusting excuse for food. The sole employee seemed way over worked trying to get delivery orders ready and serve everyone there. It was not good. It was also like $20 which is excessive for what I got.
Service was good but the chicken is cubed and rubbery, not what i remember from a few years ago. Was ok.
Horribly overpriced fries and gravy.
Very good poutine. Sadly the cheese curds are refrigerated, when they should be room temperature. Thank you government regulations.
Very long wait and the staff clearly couldnt care less about speeding that up. Food was okay but prices are way too high for the amount youre getting.
Good and quick
It wasn t great experience the guy who works in the shop was really awesome. He was well spoken and hard-working the food was great I tried the boneless wing chicken poutine Talking about money, the large box was a good value.
Poutine Portion was small for $10.99... ridiculous price. I did not like the gravy, the fries were just okay, the cheese curds were good. $2.79 for a Dasani Water? What a joke. I was very excited to come back here for the first time in a long time, entered this tiny building, no music playing, dead atmosphere. Guy didnt know how to void the water off the order. Will not be seeing me ever again. I am beyond disappointed.
Love it...
Great one
Not bad, quite expensive. Willys is by far the best poutine in this city Food : 4/5
Ordered a ringmaster on Uber eats and received a poutine with no onion ring I called the restaurant they told me they were out of onion ring and there s nothing they can do about it. The poutine is called Ringmaster the main ingredient was missing! They should at least have call to let me know. Worst customer service ever.
Absolutely horrible. The place is dingy and dirty. The person manning the counter has zero customer service skills. Ordered pulled pork poutine and Ive never tasted worse poutine in my life. The potatoes were all black,, hardly any cheese curds and the pulled pork was like chicken. Avoid at all costs. $16 wasted.
Stopped by to try some traditional and alternative poutine. Huge portions. Good flavor. I d go back for sure.
Tiny shop but great poutine. I didn t know that there were so many varieties of poutine but there is a flavor to satisfy whatever craving you have. I just went with the bacon poutine and it was good albeit a bit on the salty side (but what do you expect?)
Karan and breet are awesome! They made the beat pouting!
Greatest service ever
Soooo good. Meaty amd awesome
Order on here cause my normal poutine place was closed after work. The wait and the price of this place wasn t bad but when you only have the option to order a meal and when that word is used you think you ll be getting the thing you order plus a side and a drink well that didn t happen so that definitely has to be fixed. The size of the poutine was small and resulted in me still being hungry. Wouldn t recommend
They gave us the wrong order. I ordered 4 items and they mixed them up with the other guy who had 3 items
IF YOU RE VEGETARIAN DON T ORDER THERE: They mix the gravy sauces. My roommate ordered for us today and ask me to taste it because it didn t taste like her typical gravy. I called them and this woman full on say they mixed both sauces because there wasn t enough. She also said that I was rude and abusive over the phone which I wasn t. She didn t feel any remorse. Whoever was on shift the 20th of September 2022 at 6:30pm needs to be fired. Vegetarian options: They mixed typical gravy with the vegetarian one FOR MY VEGETARIAN FRIEND. Literally unacceptable
Decent portion size but didn t bother eating it all because the veggie gravy was incredibly bland. They also really skimp on the cheese curds.
The way I was given my order was FOODS READY with the lid open, no effort to close the lid for me or put the gravy on the side as I asked... i had to struggle with the lid for them to cave in & do it for me ... didnt ask if I wanted a to-go bag when it was raining... the two workers were fighting and wrestling over a phone.... will not be back
Crazy custom selection, I personally do caramelized onion with maple and its AMAZING! My only complaint is Im not the biggest fan of their potatoes they use, but still worth purchasing for a late night drunken snack downtown
I bought a regular Buffalo chicken and I had NO chicken in the poutine I paid $17 for. I will not tip before I pay again.
The food is great but my first time going in person rather than ordering delivery they got the order wrong. There was only one other person there, and they got her order wrong as well.
Decided to treat myself to a butter chicken poutine on my birthday, didnt think a $12 poutine would come with cut up chicken nugget filling and cheap curry paste mixed with raw tomato sauce. Nasty. Was my favorite poutine spot, not anymore.. Edit: Dec 2023 Poutine has been worse and worse, staff have no idea what they are doing, change menu items and way of doing sauces now ao you cant choose sauce on the side, the gov has been notifying businesses for years about the change in plastics, no side sauce, but youll give me 4 unrequested plastic forks. Called aboit soggy food, told to pay for another order. Officially lost a customer since you guys opened. Thanks for the memories guys
Had the Buffalo chicken and it was amazing. Definitely go back for more. Just the right sized portion i didnt need to nap after either
I would literally marry this place if the bureaucrats let me. God bless poutine.
Friendly employee, but my poutine was horrendous. Fries were hard, the poutine was dry and way too crunchy. I had to throw it out after a few bites, which is unfortunate as it put me down 12$.
I ve had some decent poutine in the past here but this week I got the pulled pork poutine and the pork was ice cold. It was really gross and I m not very picky at all. It was one of the grossest take out experiences I ve ever had.
I have eaten poutine all over Canada and this by far has been the worst I have ever had! The fries were cold and not fully cooked, the chicken was terrible, the gravy was probably something they found on the street. We couldnt eat it is was so bad.
Very good!
Not a great poutine, I did not like it at all.
Not too bad but you can do better in this city.
I ordered a veggie deluxe and was even asked again what I ordered, the Fries arnt cooked and I didnt get any vegies let alone hardly any cheese, very disappointed after payment near 15$
Friends and I went here for the first time. my poutine was okay, but my bf got the perogy poutine and there were barely any ingredients on there and the perogys were completely raw. could not eat. really disappointed :(
Wrong order and so arrogant front desk cashier
This place offers a great overall poutine experience. I havent had a poutine I didnt enjoy, and Ive had numerous. Once in a while Ill splurge and get the Wow size and never regret it.
Probably the only good thing is that the place opens until late, besides that, pretty small portions. Ordered buffalo wings as side, well, it was just three small pieces of crusty chicken. No toppings, no sauces. I feel lucky I got forks.
I love this place. Amazing poutines. Great selection. Something for everyone
Delicious, friendly and fast service as always!
Cold fries not worth near no chiken or cheese in so called Buffalo chiken Poutine
Not too great. Friendly employees though
I really loved how cozy the place is! The service was fast and friendly and the food was wonderful.
It was good, kind of cold a quiet there, not sure if this is there slow time
Unusual meal, very tasty and great value, recommend a try
Had the hot chick poutine today, not impressed really. Fries aren t cooked enough, gravy is sub par. Honestly poutine needs three things. Good fries, good gravy and squeaky cheese curds. If you re going to be a poutinerie why not make your poutine the best. I ve come here many times simply due to lack of options with low expectations and they are met every time. You think being as dead as it was here on a Sunday afternoon a little more effort would be put in.
Great service, and portions are generous! Service was fast too.
My favorite poutine fix
First time trying Smokes. The staff were friendly but fries were undercooked and mushy. Neither my friend or I could eat it. Not what I would expect from a poutine place.
Ordered the pulled pork poutine that had very little pork and gravy had no flavour/was way too salty and fries were undercooked and soggy. Never again !! Go across street to Willys for the best poutine in town. See my review for Willys.
It has a great tasting poutine
Not from Halifax but I always stop here everytime I pass through.
I love smoke and his poutinerie <3
Full of fries only in Poutine
First of all. If you ve never been, you need to. Right of passage. Secondly. Not only is the poutine amazing and you have like 100 choices to choose from the staff is hilarious, sooooo friendly, and if willing to do custom orders as well. Love going here for the poutine as well as the amazing service.
It was tasty!
My cheeseburger poutine was ok but not as good as Ive had before. My wife said the same about her butter chicken poutine. We love poutines but this time was just meh. =/
Ordered four poutines from here and was extremely dissapointed when one of the poutines didnt arrive and the portion sizes were tiny. For 13+ dollars for a poutine. I am not impressed at all. McDonalds makes a better poutine personally. The fries tasted old and had no flavor. Would not recommend ordering from here again or ever.
It was 10:47 PM and the closing time is 11:00 PM. Employees had closed doors. and I was told that they are closed already. This is ridiculous and goes against franchise policy. Specifically frustrating if youre having to drive 20 mins to come there on time to be told that theyve closed 13 mins early.
Had the wow size poutine with pulled pork and bacon. Enjoyed it, but more cheese curds would have been nice. It was pretty skimpy on the curds.
I may had a bad batch
Quantity of poutine is good but it tastes bland(less salt) and fries are browned, so doesnt feel fresh.
Best place to eat. Always find something to satisfy my cravings
Pretty good poutine.
Most of the time if you order on skipthedishes or doordash they will entirely ignore the extras you order, the most recent order I had was a pulled pork with extra pulled pork and extra gravy and curds(the double double they call it) all additional ingredients were not accounted for on the receipt or even in the poutine. I dont recommend ordering from here. The cheery on top is that there were no utensils or even a single pepper or salt packet in my bag. So if you dont have utensils then good luck eating it!!
Absolutely the best poutine I have ever had. These guys are geniuses.
Poutine was amazing but we also got some sides that I wont buy again. (Boneless chicken wings and deep fried pepperoni)
One of the best poutine places I have ever had. They serve so much variety to the basic poutine recipe.
Great poutine at reasonable price.
I ve never been there sober but it s still preeeety good!
Food is always great, freshly made, and super filling, and the staff are always super nice and cool as well
A different take on poutine. Lots of different varieties to try. Not the best bang for your buck.
Very tasty here the poutine and large selection
Simply awesome
Such a great twist on a classic Canadian dish also has some awesome vegetarian (and possibly vegan) options!
I like Willies more.
This place is fast and terrific food!!!!
Always good food and friendly service!
Not the best poutine. The gravy is lacking. It tasted canned. Reminded me of Burger King poutine.
If you are a poutine lover, definitely for you. Several different arrangements meant to entice the customer.
Salty
When I asked about a potential allergen the staff actually pulled out their book in front of me to make sure there was no risk for me. That really meant a lot. And the poutine was absolutely fantastic.
Very good but a little pricey
If youre from Nova Scotia and have never had Smokes poutine, are you really from Nova Scotia?...
I remember the poutines were top notch there and still are. Please franchise a location in Bridgewater!
Dude was super-helpful to explain the menu and the food did NOT disappoint!! I have to go back till Ive tried everything on the menu!!
Usually pretty good but I find it all depends on when you go to this establishment. Sometimes its nice an fresh an fries are cooked perfect , then times like today the fries were over cooked, dark an very hard
Perfect food for the inebriated and the sober. A little pricey but for the amount of cheese curds they put in I think it works out as a pretty good deal!
I had a Korean poutine. Nothing Korean about a bunch of roast beef doused in sambal olek sauce. Feels a bit like a tourist trap and/or late night after drinking place...
I got an overcooked one. I hope they can have a try.
Special cheese and potato is great, but little bit salty for me.
I really like all the options for toppings but the fries are always mushy. Could be cooked slightly longer so they still have a crunch. Was more like mashed potatoes. Price s make no sense, basically the same amount of toppings for each size but just more fries, which are very cheap. 21$ with a drink is borderline insane. It s poutine, should be affordable. Don t go here sober.
By far the best poutine around! Huge servings and delicious food
As a vegetarian I SUPER appreciate that this place has options for me (most poutine places wouldnt) and loved the creativity of the menu, but unfortunately the fries were not my favourite (kinda metallic tasting? and not the right consistency/cooking technique) but that could just be me! I wish I could just get an order of the fried cauliflower on top, that was 10/10. On the other end of things, though, starting probably 3 hours or so after I had this poutine and continuing through the next day, I got really sick to my stomach and ended up throwing up like 5 times. It could totally have been something else, Im not necessarily blaming this place, but, I mean, fair warning.
Poison but yummy.
I got about 1/3 of the toppings I would normally receive. In my case I get a pulled pork. Usually there is a nice layer of toppings( pulled pork). Today, not the case. I would say I got 1/4 the normal amount.
