Bar Sofia in Halifax

Busy, loud, server could honestly care less about anything, We sat at the bar and watched the chefs touch all the food with their bare hands without washing them once throughout the two hours we were there. No regards for any allergies or anything. just unhygienic. We got Margaritas, I think that was the best part of the meal. The food is ok.. guacamole was lacking

Really nice atmosphere with nice drinks, but expensive drinks. Food is overpriced for the quality, as a latin american i didn t find the menu authentic. Service was amazing! I had the yuka fries and they were a little dry, while they should be soft inside and crispy outside. I also had the empanadas, that were ok but the meat shouldn t be seasoned with curry, totally different than what you d expect. Both dipping sauces were really good! The expresso martini was really good, the margarita too but very sweet for my taste.

A must visit when in halifax. Service with a smile. Amazing service, knowledgable staff who are also thoughtful, and attentive. Food and drinks were delicious. Compliments to the servers, bartenders and chefs. Great atmosphere. Interior and exterior are very aesthetically pleasing. Always a great fun time at bar sofia! Had an interview with a pretty manager or whoever, but she had nothing going on in her head, no questions to ask, most awkward and unprofessional 3 minute interview ever. Told some coworkers about it and we had a good laugh over it though. Strange way to conduct interviews though

I went over Saturday over the weekend with two of my friends and I can confidently say it will be our last time there. When we sat down at the bar, we had met a random group of people beside us and were making small talk, as anyone would. We had ordered our own drinks and I paid for my two friends and I. Once this random group beside us decided to leave the establishment, the waiter comes over 10 mins later asking which one of us will be paying for the OTHER groups bill. I explained to the bartender that we were not with them and he replied word for word Someone has to pay for this bill!. I couldnt believe it.. I used to be a bartender and to be told we HAVE to pay for drinks that are not ours! No common sense, had a very rude tone of voice... The service was horrible. Not to mention waiting 20 mins or more for a drink. I explained that we will not be held accountable for other peoples bills and when we asked to speak to the manager about this, the manager finally decided to see us and she still couldn t listen to us, constantly interrupting us. When she saw that we stood our grounds, and instead of trying to make a unhappy customer happy she threatened to grab security. We got up to leave without a causing any disturbance once they knew why we were upset. The only good part about the visit was the bouncer by the door. He greeted us with a warm smile. When we left, I was cold and the bouncer gave me a warm blanket to take with me. Overall, we felt very disappointed about the service and especially the management. They cannot resolve customers issues effectively. Save your time and money.

Bar Sofia is a great place on the Halifax waterfront to have a bite to eat. Lunch was very good so we returned for dinner and it was even better. Amazing options for vegans and vegetarians. Great drinks, food and atmosphere.

I arrived at 4:40 PM on a Thursday evening for the Queens Marque fashion show during Halifax Fashion Week. I was alone initially, with a friend on their way to join me. Upon arrival, I had to wait to be acknowledged as the staff were chatting among themselves. Eventually, I was seated on the front patio, given the day menu, and informed that dinner service wouldnt begin until 5:00 PM. I waited patiently, but as time passed, the situation worsened. A manager and a waitress came out to set up a table for another group who arrived after me. They were promptly given full menus, water, and drink options well before 5:00 PM. Despite this, I was still not acknowledged, so I flagged down the staff to inform them that I had been waiting for over 11 minutes without any service. The manager was very apologetic, brought me a beverage right away, and kindly comped it. I hoped this would mark an improvement in the service, which would have made for a satisfactory response to a frustrating start. Unfortunately, it didnt. However, 40 minutes after I initially arrived we still had no service. My friends had to go inside to inquire about our situation, only to be told by the waitress that she didnt know anyone was out there despite the fact that she was the one who had seated me and had spoken with me about the menu earlier. By this point, it was nearly 5:30 PM. We were starving, but it was too late to order and still make it to our event to grab our seats. Even after a different waiter took over, we had to repeatedly flag them down for bills, an additional chair (as yet another friend joined), and basic service. Overall: Food: 1 star (because I didn t get to order any) Service: 1 star (because we didn t receive any service in the end) Atmosphere: 3 stars (because the setting is pleasant) Unfortunately, my friends and I will be choosing other establishments in the area moving forward. I hope they work to improve their service.

Cute place but don t order the ribs 35$ and they were basic, not fall off the bone, over salted, flavour was just not there. Just pick something else save your money.

This tiny plate of tuna was $17 plus tax and tip. Service was great, but it doesn t make up for the price.

Bar Sofia did not disappoint. We sat on the deck (through the restaurant) on a warm summer evening. We had wine/cocktails and ordered the seafood tower, which was delicious and plentiful. There was a lot of flavour packed into the dish. We loved the swordfish ceviche! The cocktails were interesting and flavourful. The wine selection wasn t great and it would have been good to see more varietals. The service was ok. Staff were very friendly, however no one checked to see if we were enjoying our dish and we had to flag someone down to have the chips replenished (you do not get enough).

Just stopped in for a couple of drinks and ended having to wait 30-40 min for two margaritas. They gave the first set of our drinks to our neighbours. Service not really good, never tried the food and likely will not.

We loved the food and the mocktails. The spicy strawberry one was a great discovery. IPA and brown beer available. We were feeling a little peckish and the pequenos plates were perfect. We had the marinated tomato salad (possibility of adding shrimp or chicken) and the quail eggs on homemade sausage. Quality-price-service 10/10. In addition, beautiful view of the port.

My server Kayla was amazing, the entire staff were friendly, drinks were refreshing and delicious they had excellent food. Thank you to the chefs I would personally recommend the soft tacos and avocado and chips xoxo

First time visiting. Best margarita that I have ever had in my life. The mama coco was amazing. But the worst churros I have ever had. Greasy and tasted bad. Even the sauce couldnt make them better. Didnt finish them. I also ate the cheeseburger empanadas special. Very tasty.

We shared the Carnitas soft tacos and an order of rice & beans. Best carnitas I ve ever had. 2 for me and 1 for my wife with plenty of rice and beans. Delicious! If I lived here I d eat here often.

Margarita Calaveras is amazing, the Pisco Sour perfect, the food is really good, and ambiance is out of this world.

I was really excited to go to this restaurant given all the hype, but was really disappointed with the outcome. The food is not good and our server had her moments. She was very busy talking to one person the majority of the night and forgot to check in. She did notice that we weren t eating one of our items and ended up taking it off our bill, which I was thankful for that. If you want to go somewhere for a drink and some pretty instagram pictures, this place is great for that. But if you are looking for a good meal, I d suggest going somewhere else.

Disappointed since we expected more based on the reviews and atmosphere. Servers came to our table 5 separate times bringing us other tables orders, they then walked table to table to find who ordered what. We also found it a long wait to place an order for drinks and food. The tacos we also sadly wet - not something you want to describe tacos with. Considering the number of options in the area, I recommend somewhere else.

Firstly, gotta give credit where credit is due - gorgeous restaurant + great drinks! I m so sad to say our server was awful. He was abrasive and patronizing, ridiculed my friend for mispronouncing a menu item and made snarky comments like LOOK AT HER! The girl is looking at the menu like she s studying for an exam and that should be enough food before our table finished ordering. Maybe this would be cute banter if we had rapport but it just came off as bullying. Also had to audacity to ask our table what each of our backgrounds were doubt he d ask that to a group of white women. Felt so incredibly uncomfortable and out of place. Really wanted to like this place. disappointing.

The server Keith was top notch!!!!! He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable!! We didn t have a reservation everyone took good care of us .including Jessy and porter!! Thanks for making all 8 of us happy!!

Excellent food and great service. They worked with us to squeeze-in a same day reservation. Patio wasnt open which was too bad, restaurant is beautiful inside - just a little too loud for comfortable conversation. (Churros arent really churros if youve ever had the real thing, but everything else we had was great)

Pretty disappointing experience with some friends. Four of us were out for a birthday celebration and visited the patio. The host was excellent and enthusiastically welcomed us, making sure we were seated at a table with a working heater and even brought blankets. It was quite busy and Im fairly certain there wasnt anything available inside at the time. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience left us feeling like an inconvenience. My friend ordered a second margarita and after 25 minutes it still hadnt arrived. I had initially declined a second drink, but decided to order another at this point since the rest of our drinks were now empty. The server told me he wouldnt order me another drink because they didnt want to serve on the patio anymore. I questioned it, asking why active guests with an open tab on the patio in a full restaurant should be refused an order, especially as it was only around 10:30p with the bar staying open for another couple of hours. He told us we could go inside to be served, but he wasnt going to be ordering us anything else outside. We decided to cancel my friends very late margarita and requested the bills so we could find another spot. Not the hospitality we were looking for. I reached out to the restaurant directly to share our experience but didnt receive a reply from their managers.

Very good experience! Very welcoming, cozy patio, with blankets and heater, too great, as we were so cold. And most important for us, very pet friendly! Food was delicious! And stuff amazing!

Nice quaint place, we stopped by here for lunch to grab a bite before we headed off to the airport as the atmosphere looked nice. The server first misheard us and brought over nachos when we hadnt ordered them. She promptly took them back and apologized, ok no problem. Then when we were finished our bill came and the nachos was still listed on there in addition to what we actually ordered, we got a refund for that amount but it was a little frustrating as by the time we noticed we had paid, paid tax and tipped on that extra amount. We had to go and didnt want to spend our time arguing over a few dollars so we just let it go. A shame as I really wanted to like this place but the service just wasnt there.

Cute place. But outside of being on the waterfront and Instagrammable, unsure what it has going for it! Food is TERRIBLE, we got the mashed avocados, which was literally half a avocado very roughly mashed so we couldnt even pick it up with the chips, the swordfish ceviche was stinky and the worst ceviche I ever had and I honestly dont know how anyone can screw up marinated olives but they get the prize for that. We ordered a 38$ drink thinking it will be a big party drink, it was an awful and tiny drink and the server was confused as well, and found it its because it had a fancy tequila in it, which neither the description said nor did anyone know!

Ive been at Sofia with my husband and our adult son and daughter. Everyone loved it ! Great wall decor, with original paintings. Very professionnal and friendly service Very tasty food ! I recommend !

We went there for a birthday brunch a few weekends ago, and despite the restaurant not being very busy at the time, the service was terrible, the waitress was slow and the food took forever. I had the enchilada and it was like pizza Pop but worse - horribly bland. The place looks cool but the service was some if the worst Ive ever had and the food is not very good

Not a great experience. Dont recommend. Food wasnt as good as said to be(the and service was quite poor. (Waitress didnt seem into it). The Mushroom Birria Tacos were not good, but the Sofia s Choripán Burger was alright Glazed Pork Back Ribs were OK, but quality did not not match the price or atmostphere. Definitely wasnt worth $90+tax, but now we know at least. Will not be going back.

Great little spot, very cute and trendy. I had the tiger nuts cocktail. It s really unique, tastes like leftover milk in a cereal bowl that had Cinnamon Toast Crunch in it (in a great great way). Margaritas were also fire.

The food was tasty, but the portions were small and pricey. Their cod tacos were particularly tiny and expensive.

Drinks were subpar, appetizers were only ok and service was abysmal. So many better options on the Halifax Waterfront . Don t waste your money here.

I was disappointed that after finding a hair in my drink the drink was still on my bill. My girlfriend and I waited for what seemed like an extensive amount of time for our tacos but could sympathize with our server who seemed to be the only one on the patio. I would also recommend that they take more pride in cleaning the tile patio bench. It is outdoors so you can expect it to get dirty, but there was soil all over it and I had to sit on my jacket so that my white outfit did not get dirty. A quick wipe down would have solved that problem!

We had the adobo cauliflower and mussels. Really good and great portion sizes. The restaurant is so beautiful.

Bar Sofia is a feast for the eyes and the belly! The swordfish ceviche with taro chips was fabulous and their virgin mojito was delicious! Music was tasteful and upbeat Mexican/Spanish flare and the servers were timely and very pleasant. The decor is delightful and playful with so much color, it was like I went on a lunchtime vacation. LOVE it here. Cant wait to go back!

Drinks were outstanding the options of liquor was outstanding and like a proper Latin American experience the tequila options were outstanding I highly recommend going to bar Sophia if you re visiting or if you re a local all around an amazing spot to experience!

This bar surpassed all my expectations! The décor and atmosphere is so bright and welcoming, it really feels like youre in a restaurant down South! I opted for Mushroom Birria Tacos which were so fresh and delicious and the super tasty Pinagroni! I will definitely be back and am telling everyone to come try this cool new place! UPDATE: Still amazingly fresh Guac and went for the carnitas tacos when I went last week. Will continue eating at this awesome place for years to come!

Had lunch at Bar Sofia for the first time yesterday, and loved it all! The vibe, service and food were all amazing. Absolutely can t wait to return!

I ve been here twice and both times, I enjoyed myself! The service was good, food was tasty and the drinks were fab! I believe they are currently closed for renovations, but if you get the chance to go when the warm weather comes; go on the patio!

While the food was very flavourful the portions were small for the price youre paying. I ordered 2 halibut tacos, again the flavour was amazing but while I ordered from the larger plate part of the menu I would have thought it would have been more. Also really didnt like that my plate came and then 15 minutes went by before my boyfriends came .... not cool since we ordered together and were doing date night also the drinks were not quite right. Cant put a label on it but maybe the bartender was just off that night.

Second visit: We werent sure we were going to get our drinks-- it was def a would we just leave moment. And I wouldnt say our server was happy to work with us. First visit: Wasnt head over heels for the cocktail menu, but both of us found something we were cool with. Snack menu wasnt anything I wouldve sought out either, but what we did order was good. Service staff was friendly.

We loved our first visit and authentic Latin flavors. Not so consistent or special on a second try - but the tuna tiradito, yucca fries and carnitas are great.

I liked it enough. Our server Drew was amazing and patient and her and the kitchen took great care of my extravagant allergy list. Most of the food feedback from my group of 15 was positive. The cake fee police was a little much there. Chill a bit.

My sister had her bachelorette party here, everything was great and we had a really good time. I wanted to give our server a shoutout because she was so responsive and sweet. I think her name was melanie, it was roughly a week ago so I cant exactly remember but thanks for everything!

The food was good, but I was mostly impressed by their margaritas. The spicy mango margarita was so delicious, we had to come again next evening for another round. If youre in Halifax, you have to try their margaritas. So yummy!

Cute little restaurant by the water! Came here for a drink by the water and it was nice and enjoyable. We had the the classic Nova Scotia cider which was tasty. This restaurant does serve food but I didnt come here to eat.

I ve been a few times & each time gets better. Very nice and knowledgeable servers. Love the decor & vibe, for a fun meal with friends. My favourite tacos in HRM are the mushroom tacos, so much flavour! And the portion sizes are good. Love the outdoor patio. Only downside in the summer is that the inside doesn t have air conditioning & one time I was there, it was so hot inside that I actually felt as if I was going to pass out, which never happens to me personally. Otherwise, 5/5 for food, service & vibes!

I imagine this place is a party at night and more aimed at tourists during the day. Cocktails were good but not made with fresh squeezed juice, food was quite good, service was amiable. All in all, no complaints but not my first choice in Halifax.

Super cute place! Food and drinks are great, and the ambiance is even better!! Love the little touches such as being able to watch them cook live, the bar area, and the postcard souvenir! They were also very accommodating if you have dietary restrictions. It does get busy so it s best to reserve. Highly recommend!

We went there for drinks on a quiet monday night. Had to wait for our cocktails for 30 minutes and there were maybe 15 guests in total at that point. The vibe of the bar was cool but we were disappointed by the cocktails. The pina colada was the worst Ive ever had. It was basically just coconut milk and nothing else.

Service was bad, server was rude! Drinks were alright, $33 for a pineapple birthday drink is kind of expensive lol. Birria tacos were good but nothing crazy, they did not taste authentic at all. The consommé was literally beef broth and you can only choose the mushroom kind so you can t even get the tacos with meat on them The ambiance is killer! Love love love! Decor is absolutely stunning.

Were from pei , went last night,maybe bad luck or something but a fight between customers n staff happened beside us . Also watched food sit for a long under the heat lamps . Just alot of stuff gave us a bad vibe so we had to leave , I boxed my food n we left . But food was yummy just wish I could of enjoyed it there . Well try again another time n see how it goes

Fantastic brunch. We had a set menu drag brunch but would be back even without the show! Terrific chiquilladas and even the fruit salad was top notch. Lovely service.

Food was very good, service was okay. They were very friendly but forgot about our table a few times and the second round of our drinks just didn t come. They did make it right at the end so clearly they are committed to a good guest experience. Our favourite dish was the swordfish ceviche we got as a starter. The restaurant itself is sliiiightly lacking some care. The washrooms were pretty dirty and the sink didn t drain. Also there was a huge pile of dirty glasses on the side of the bar that s kinda of an eye sore. Fun place, just not quite a 5/5. Would still recommend going for sure.

Delicious and I love the decor. The food we had was very authentic and we loved it. The atmosphere on a Friday night was a bit clubby for us. If we had come earlier in the evening it was probably more chill.

you need more staff . we had $$$ to spend on a special celebration and you didn t deliver . tomato salad $17 ( too much dressing ) no bread sticks to absorb and 2oz piece of salmon add $11 . is not acceptable . salmon was dry and not the same thickness ( the tail maybe) salmon and salad served first and 15 mins later another , then 5 mins another . we didn t eat together and had no wine to drink while waiting. will not recommend or return. My husband ordered the mixed meat platter with chicken, sausage and steak. Chicken wing was over cooked, sausage was dry and hard and 3 oz steak was raw (they didn t ask how he wanted it). Absolutely terrible food and service. No manager, no apologies. This restaurant is a tourist trap. Stay away

Visited the Bar Sofia patio with our dog, and the servers were so great. They brought our pup a water bowl, and were super accommodating. Our server Alyssa was super kind and had great cocktail recommendations. Would definitely recommend to others

I was so excited to try this place because I love Latin food, but it was quite disappointing. The steak, ribs, chicken, and chorizo were REALLY dry. Like, I went through 4 glasses of water trying to eat my meal. I will say that the service is great and the decor is stunning. So if you re looking for a good instagram photo, definitely go there. But skip it if you re looking for good food.

The service is very good and servers are helpful and friendly. The food menu, quantity and quality of food leaves a lot to be desired, however the experience and service compensate. Overall a decent experience.

Great spot for date night. Lovely outdoor patio seating. Lots of great cocktails to choose from. We tried the mushroom empanadas, the beef empanadas and the carnita soft tacos. All the food was delicious with lots of true Latin American flavours.

From the moment we walked in the staff made us feel like we were not wanted there. We ordered the tartar that looked and tasted like cat food, and tacos which had no flavour at all. Also got a mojito pitcher which was lime juice that had at one point seen a mint leaf, and I am 100% sure there was no rum in at all. The music was so loud that we had to yell at each other to decide we were leaving after being there for 10 minutes.

This place is cute...very inviting and attractive from the outside. When youre walking around, this place seems so much better than it actually is. Its OK at best, but it could be outstanding. I did not eat here, so I cant speak about the quality of the food. The margarita selection was great, but presentation was terrible. This place has potential, but unfortunately felt very lackluster.

Very modern and chic spot. Great vibe for a girls day, even saw 2 groups host bridal shower dinners. Looks like a nice spot for drinks. The music was quite loud indoors so I don t know if you ll be able to make good conversation over the noise. The food was okay, I had to ask for sauce with my Cod tacos because it felt very plain.

Tried here on a nice Wednesday evening around 7pm in Aug 2023. I knew that reservations are normally required to get a table, but a friend and I lucked out just walking by and deciding to see. We stepped in and found the inside a bit too loud, so opted to be seated at one of the few outdoor tables on the front side (vs the rear patio which is bigger with a decorative, short wall fencing it in). Service was good, albeit felt a bit rushed. I tried the Rocket slushie, which I dont see on the online menu. It came in a Blue Lobster brand glass (the same as come with a case of beer) and was very refreshing, tasting yes, like rocket popsicles. It didnt have the pretty red, white & blue colors I was hoping for, just white, but the slushie consistency was smooth and stayed that way without melting, not too sweet. We decided to test a few small places vs getting entrees. The Avocado & chips ($17 - smashed avocado, taro + tortilla chips, pico de gallo) were very good, exactly as expected. The Elotes ($9 charcoal-grilled corn on the cob, citrus crema, sofia spice, queso fresco) was delicious. Its one small cob cut into two halves with lots of topping. The Shishito Peppers ($14 newfoundland sea salt, sofia spice) were good. I had to ask the server what to expect, and she described it as a bowl of several peppers with various levels of spice. There were Id say a dozen, which shrink upon cooking of course, and would describe each one to actually have a consistent heat of medium, which some people consider, spicy. Just right for me, nonetheless). Although I didnt plan to spend $70 after tax on snacks, each item was very good and I definitely will be back another time, perhaps to try indoors for lunch, etc.

Nice restaurant in a vey nice location in Halifax. Cocktails are excellent (a little pricy but no different than comparable places) Food was terrific and our server was excellent. I heard different experiences from others regarding the timeliness of the service but we had no issues plus were in no rush and happy to enjoy the ambiance. If you like cocktail s and want to try something interesting, I recommend the Naked + Famous. Smoky Mescal makes this one stand out. If you are not a fan of Brussels sprouts, their version might make you change your mind.

Beautifully decorated restaurant, light and bright atmosphere with Latin music. It was a perfect day to enjoy lunch on the patio. Attentive service and tasty food. The elote was nice. I had better / sweeter corn but the toppings were well balanced, bright and fresh. The Brussels sprouts were delicious. The presentation was vibrant and the flavors were popping. The churros were a great way to end the meal. Overall pleasant lunch with view on the Halifax Harbor.

Swordfish ceviche was to die for. Service was a little slow, but got better throughout dinner.

Fun times! We had a really great meal and some really interesting drinks here. The steak tartare, tiradito, and brussels sprouts were standouts. Fish tacos were a bit boring. But overall, food was very delicious and staff was very friendly. Ambiance was fun with comfortable seating. Churros werent available to order when we visited so cant wait to try them next time!

Spectacular spot for dinner and drinks. The bartender made a great bramble that was bang on what I d get in London. So happy I got to spend an evening here.

Terrible place. This restaurant pretends too hard to look complex and alluring. The food is honestly very bland. This place perfectly encapsulates the saying all style, no substance . I wish the food was the worst thing about this place, but their service takes the throne. We were ignored by their servers for a very long time. Even when we requested for a refill on our drinks, they kept forgetting and passing us up. I understand it was quite a busy time when we dined in, but it s no excuse when I had to bring up the fact that we wanted a refill on three separate occasions. We also ordered 2 servings of churros to go yet they seemingly forgot about it and made us wait even more. They got the quantity wrong and just gave us one portion. And it suuucked. Bland churros. Their dipping sauce was disgustingly sweet and unpalatable. Seriously, stay away from this place. Don t let the somewhat decent looking decor of the restaurant with its picturesque looking meals fool you into thinking this place is anything worthy of being called decent.

Hands down our favorite spot in Halifax, from the food to the vibes, music and service ! 10 out 10 ! We come here everytime we come down to Halifax. Im the General manager of Sophia&Spritz in Moncton NB, the bartenders Roz & Israel are amazing bartenders. So personable and fun to be around, I tend to always let them decide what I drink. I call it bartenders choice, they ask preference of spirit which I always seem to go for Mezcal since there selection is alway so good compared to Moncton. Last night they made us some of the best fun, flavorful cocktails that were off menu and created on the spot. Again cannot recommend this place enough. Me and my girlfriend always groove away with the music. Amazing job guys, the restaurant is lucky to have them be part of their team !! Till next time

Great atmosphere but service wasnt the greatest

This is the third time visiting Sofia s, both other experiences were fantastic! We sat for 10 minutes before anyone came to our table. Server was disconnected and seemed annoyed to be serving us. Drinks were ok. Do not order the cuttlefish cocktail. Black thick syrup, very intense flavour. Also do not order the Jambon. They do not know how to slice it, super thick bits and pieces, chewy and overpriced. Server never asked us about mains and we had to ask for water. Spent most of his time socializing with other servers. I do not recommend.

Perfect service in the bar

I ordered the mixed meat platter and it was not good. The steak was cold and the chicken was rubbery. Definitely not worth the price. The waitress was pleasant but the manager didn t seem to care that I was not satisfied with the meal.

Sat at the bar the 3 bartender didnt serve me fir over 10 minutes till I called them over. I would eat her again but atmosphere is great.

Although my food and service were great I witnessed two staff arguing and I believe they were both managers. It was embarrassing for the bar staff working and also not nice to hear as a customer. The argument went on for about 15 minutes and then after one person complained to more staff about what happened. I actually voiced my opinion to staff about how bad that was.
