Wonderful atmosphere, service, cocktails and food; I highly recommend

Field Guide is one of my top restaurants in Nova Scotia. The Mushroom Bao and Pork Tacos are a MUST TRY. and the new beef tartare they ve recently added is wicked. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a top tier dining experience in Halifax

Best cocktails and hospitality I have had in a while.

Has the oysters, shrimp Bao, and peri peri squid. Particularly liked the mignonette and hot sauces with the oysters. The shrimp Bao was delicious, wouldnt have thought to pair harissa and dill but it worked well, and the shrimp were very tender. The squid was great, the scallion oil with it was an absolute show-stopper. On the pricey side, but everything was very tasty.

This place is outstanding. Go with friends. Order lots of things and share. Dont miss the salmon, and get the green beans. I know it sounds strange, but sublime green beans. Eat your vegetables. Second time to Field Guide. It remains a charming and outstanding restaurant. The menu changes frequently. Every plating is beautiful and delicious, very special. Do get the green beans! It was a different preparation, savory and spiced!

The cocktail list is inspired; possibly divinely. Delicious food in perfect portion sizes. You definitely wont walk away hungry or uncomfortable. Service was somehow both attentive and relaxed, and always extremely friendly. Vibes were perfect; prices, more than fair. If anyone I know says theyre going to Halifax, I am recommending Field Guide without question. Please try the Milk Punch!!!

Well crafted dishes and cocktails. The asparagus is worth the detour! The dishes are small, allow at least 2 per person.

Nice cheescouterie and very tasty carnitas taco. Cauliflower taco was very good. Shrimp bao way too salty.

We came to try their milk punch after having a delicious one at Dear Friend in Dartmouth. The drink itself was fine, but it almost seemed like they split one cocktail between the two of us. The drink barely made it halfway up the glass which was overfilled with ice. The milk punch at Dear Friend was double the size for $3 less. Disappointing when you pay $16 for a drink and it s the equivalent of a tall shot.

Finally getting around to writing a review as I still havent stopped thinking about the gnocchi I had here last June... it was so delicious.

Food is amazing!

The pork tacos changed my life, and superb cocktails.

Really overpriced for the quality, compared to other restaurants in this price point. Small portions. Some good flavors (Mushroom Bao) but other dishes kind of muddled and confused. Miso squash chintzy portion despite being a main swimming in oil or butter with crispy shallots (despite saying I didn t want onion in whatever I ordered), a cashew cream and pepoers, but with no discernible taste of miso and the squash undercooked and tough on the edges. Good mocktail. Good service. But 50$ for dinner that was underwhelming vs a magnificent meal I just had at Bar Kismet for the same price. Try elsewhere.

Fantastic cocktails and small plates. Bit of an experimental edge to traditional offerings was refreshing and tasty. Full, with two cocktails each and desert for a couple, for $140.

Dinner was fantastic! Loved the seasonal menu and great atmosphere.

Always thought this place was lovely for cocktails and snacks, however, the Let us decide for you option was 5+ stars! We loved every bite and discovered new favs. Our favorites (in order of most favorite): 1) seared scallops with cannellini beans 2) rhubarb upside down cake 3) tuna and turnips 4) fresh oysters with house made strawberry? Mignonette and hot sauces 5) the prettiest potato salad on earth P.S. All the cocktails we had were perfection. I loved the nonino fresco (incredibly refreshing) and my partner enjoyed the campensino old fashioned.

We had an incredible meal! Dont miss out on the tuna & radishes and the mushroom bao! Loved every morsel! The service was great and the cocktails were creative and delicious!

Amazing food and cocktails!

Our Field Guide experience was really good. I like how they blended the small dinning room with the bar, it gathers everyone inside. Its hard to understand the restaurant pattern between all the meals, but we definitely enjoyed the food. Mushroom bao and cauliflower taco are both a must (we also really liked the gnocchi). Good place to bring a date!

My partner and I ventured here to check out the cocktails as it came up in a best Halifax cocktails google search. The search result did not disappoint! We were blown away. We sat at the bar and it was clear the staff are experts at their craft as they put intention into their creations, including making their own liquors. We also got oysters which were some of the best oysters Ive ever had. We also had the olives and were mind blown. The staff are friendly and take pride in what they do. We loved it! We will be back next time we are in Halifax and will recommend it to everyone.

We came in in the early evening on a weekday just after they opened, and the staff seemed scandalized that we didnt have a reservation. They sat us *right* next to the only other table in the place. By the time we left no other table had shown up, so it was a weird experience overall. On the plus side the food was great and the prices were decent.

Let me begin with saying we love love love the food and cocktails at Field Guide! Everything we tasted so far are bursting with flavor and are very unique combinations. However last night the way we were treated quite upset me and my friends because we made a reservation for 8 pm and when we got there they told us our table is not ready , people were sitting in our table just ordered their desserts. We were seated at the bar and told to wait for that table to finish, even though they take your credit card info to make the reservation ! We had to wait 43 minutes to be able to sit at the table we made reservations and our server did not say anything like oh we are sorry, apologies nothing, as if this is okay for this restaurant to do this to their patrons. I worked in hospitality and we always either let people know that they need to leave by certain time because that table is reserved or we didn t seat people there close to the reservation time. Worse case scenario sincere apology or an offer of a dessert would have been nice after making us wait 43 mins for a table we reserved.

The staff is very indifferent, you will not be satisfied if you go.

Best cocktails in town

The atmosphere was electric and had a good vibe. Food was excellent for the price.

Ordered the butternut squash gnocchi and it was delicious! The portions are smaller for the price/cost but for what youre getting is a thoughtful take which reminded me of an italian dish, asian fusion flavours kick. Which i have not had a lot of until now. The gnocchi with the almost curry-like creamy sweet savoury sauce with the butternut squash gnocci paired so well with the stracciatella cheese with Seasame seeds. The harmony of the two was well composed. I also heard great things about the baos, trout and beef tar tar (also having a nice asian touch to it). What was more impressive was the kitchen/cooks were cooking for everyone in a very small section in the front beside the bar, using a electric stove top to prepare the food they did. As a cook myself, i really find this impressive for the quality and quantity they are serving at. Of course, keep in mind the food from kitchen to table, but trust me it s worth the wait! Would definitely come back, but next time would love a seat by the kitchen/bar area to observe cooking processes. Compliments to the chefs

Great cocktails

Been here a couple times. Good cocktails, amazing bao buns and mussels. Pls get freshly grated horseradish for the oysters next time.

Mushroom Bao is delicious along with everything else!

Field Guide is an example of a bar that takes cocktails to a high level, without being pretentious or snooty. We sat at the bar and Pat took wonderful care of us, explaining the food and beverage menus to us as we meandered through them. Splendid bites of food, great for sharing available. Not inexpensive, but its also important for hospitality workers to earn a wage that they deserve. If you want value, find a Boston Pizza and stick to pints of Canadian. If you want to be thrilled by food and drinks that have been crafted with care and precision, eat here.

Incredible cocktail service by talented bartenders. Food made with the utmost care and precision by passionate chefs. High level service and comfortable atmosphere. A must try when in Halifax.

Fantastic! Great food, lovely staff, and great drinks.

I was expecting Gnocchi they had put on their menu (one with sweet potato cream with fermented red pepper). They gave something else with mushrooms and asparagus and didnt inform. This is not what one expects, especially when I went there based on their staff recommendation last time just two days ago. Taco was good the first time, but not what you expect when you are paying that much and expecting a good quality meal.

We were visiting from out of town and went here on a whim. Without hesitation, would recommend to everyone. Delicious beyond expectation and great local dishes to share. Our server was so wonderful. Effusive, kind, unpretentious, knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations of places to visit and things to see while we were visiting. People of the world: if youre in Halifax, you have to go here.

Unbelievable food, atmosphere, and such fun service!

Great service, always there when needed without hovering, Food always arrived in a timely manner. Every dish tasted as good as it looked. Will definitely visit again. Happy hour drinks and snacks were a treat. Dietary restrictions: Very accommodating for food issues, knew exactly what was in everything without making it feel like an imposition.

Fantastic experience... we did they let us decide option with the wine pairings and were blown away by the quality, creativity and depth of flavors, as well as the excellent selection of accompanying local wines and beverages. Excellent cocktails as well! Service was excellent with a low key eclectic vibe that keeps it fun. Wish I lived closer - I would be a regular! Please keep doing what you are doing.

Everything was amazing. We expected good food, but we were just blown away by each plate and cocktail.

Delicious! We were late to try this place but the food is absolutely phenomenal. How they make all the food in that small space and it comes out tasting divine i have no clue! The gnocchi was delicious, the toast and burrata, the shrimp bao as well as the mushroom bao. I would highly recommend them all. Drinks were also great i had a margarita and an el diablo which were very good. Great atmosphere and pricing was good too. They have a chefs choice plus drink pairing option that i will definitely try the next time we drop by. Staff was great to everyone last night was kind, and you could tell they worked rrally well as a team especially the kitchen staff!

This was hands down the best meal we have ever eaten.We travel around the world often and make eating our primary focus. Nowhere in Europe, Asia or America have we stumbled upon so many bites that just shut down the conversation and required us to close our eyes and quietly enjoy the meal. The pork belly was the favorite of the night. It is astounding to see the whole restaurant cooked for on just one small stove! Incredible.

Visited for the first time on a Saturday night with friends, and we were not disappointed! Food was amazing, especially the spinach gnocchi. I enjoyed the Invisible Gin cocktail. Also, shoutout to our amazing and knowledgeable server Cody! He was attentive and on the ball. Thanks Field Guide, we ll be back!

Small and intimate, yet very welcoming. The bartenders and staff are great at making sure youre not left too long without your drink or wanting to place an order, while also not being in your face too often. The cocktails themselves are really something else, especially the bartenders choice where the bartender probes you with questions and creates a unique cocktail for you. Its really amazing. But if you want one thats always on their menu the T.K.O. Tokyo is absolutely incredible!

Popped in to grab a drink before a dinner reso downtown. The Field Guide had an amazing selection of drinks, and small bites. The service we received was awesome! A small cute cocktail bar, it offers a fun intimate experience. The drink selection was crazy, a cocktail for every single occasion imaginable. Awesome spot, cant wait to go back.

Such a great place! Came for dinner and we really enjoyed ourselves. The food is delicious and flavourful. The menu is creative and cohesive with the options all working well together. The staff were super helpful and an absolute pleasure, and the atmosphere was spot on!

After a 9 hour drive and very stressful day of moving our son into his university apartment we wanted a small bar that wasnt in the middle of the tourist area. A quick Google search led us to Field Guide. What a great spot!!!! Small and intimate with a very laid back, chic decor. The space and staff are very welcoming. Field Guide is a proper cocktail bar that serves superb drinks and food. If youre into mescal, I highly recommend ordering a 6 Figures which was not on the cocktail menu and suggested by Stefan who ran the bar. It is my new favourite cocktail. A gem of a spot with excellent service, food and drinks. It was exactly what we were looking for.

A bit out of the way but worth the 30-minute walk. You HAVE to try all the tacos (and bao) and the cocktails are fantastic. I also had a great time chatting with the chef as I used to work in a restaurant back during school.

Though the atmosphere is relatively impressive and relaxed the food and drink quality leaves a lot to be desired especially at a high price point. Seating is rather limited and even with the smaller number of patrons it can be quite loud. I had the cured meat board and beef tartare both felt like they contained lunch meat quality meats

Great cocktails. The bartender will make you something off the menu if you request it. Their food options are decent but small portions. I think one taco was 6 dollars or something like that. Interestingly they have what appears to be a home oven in plain view, which kind of adds to its quirky charm.

Love this place, small and intimate just what you want for any nice meal. It is great food with even better drinks.

Great spot. Extensive cocktail list, with some good options for wine and beer (local taps and bottles). Menu is light on selection, but theres something for everyone. Its small plates, and it was suggested that each person order two. There was three of us, and we shared four items - the charcuterie board, seared tuna, gnocchi, and one taco per person. We were nicely topped off, but not stuffed, and it was perfect. Didnt catch our servers name, but she kept the plates coming, switching out used plates, and keeping the drinks fresh. Great service. We didnt have a reservation and seemed to arrive between waves of people, so would recommend one. Its pricey, but treat yourself - you wont be disappointed.

One of the best little bars in the city. Their mushroom baos are to die for and the newly added scallop ceviche is truly fantastic. If you add to this a good variety of quality and creative coctails you will understand why this place is always full of trendy local clientele.

Had the most amazing experience at Field Guide a few weeks ago! We sat at the bar and had the best service and food I ve had in a long time!

Amazing service! Takeout was prompt, everything was super fresh & just as delicious as dining in. The owners are also the sweetest human beings. Highly recommend!

This was our first stop in Halifax, and it was incredibly good! It will be difficult to top as we spend the week here. The fare is pricey but exquisite. I especially liked the Asparagus and Cucumber salad. The service was over the top excellent. We went with beer rather than cocktails, but well probably be back for them sometime. Great place!

Beer was good. Atmosphere was pretty chill. The staff was super friendly and helpful in suggesting places to drink and eat.

Food was decent but incredibly overpriced for the quality/quantity you get. The $32 charcuterie board left lots to desire. There should be an alternative to how you make your charred bread because there was negative audible reaction from others (including our table) to the smell every time it was made. The woman who served us looked like she needed either a drink, a date, or some food because she was NOT friendly.

Cheese and meat platter was nice with a good selection and cocktail and wine was very good. Service was also good. The pitfalls included: too noisy +++; cured salmon dish had too many textures going on but not enough flavour; Beans dish was way too salty, thereby blotting out the taste of the beans themselves as well as the other flavours in that dish. Lastly, the cost was too high for the quality of the last 2 dishes and the uncomfortably noisy atmosphere. Perhaps we turned up on the wrong night.

Full of love and inspiration, this bar has innovative yet inviting offers. Their cocktails are crafted with care and the food is unrivalled in the creative spins on classic fares. If youre from Halifax there is no doubt that youll run into a pal, and if youre new to the city the inviting atmosphere will have you fast friends with a neighbour. The service is personal and impeccable all at the same time - I would highly recommend this place to all.

We ( our group of 4) are cocktail snobs! Field guide nailed it with delicious, refreshing cocktails - they served the best cocktails we had in our 4 day trip to Halifax. Felt abit apprehensive at first when checking out menu but we ordered pork carnitas tacos, donair baos and mushroom baos. The food was exquisite, we all loved it. Ate at other upscale restaurants in Halifax but none came close to Field guide. Staff were great - waitress was very knowledgeable about food and cocktails. Service was fast and efficient. Definitely recommend this as a place to visit in Halifax. Cant wait to return.

Coming from NYC and this makes it into my top 5. The food is amazing, creative, flavorful, and cooked with love. The staff are so nice and its just a charming, cozy place to have dinner. Next time Im in Halifax, Ill definitely have to stop by again.

Food and drinks were ALL EXCELLENT!

Amazing food, the pork tacos and donair steam roll are constants on the menu and will knock your socks off. Everything else kind of transitions over the years there but those things along with the awesome staff stay a constant.

First time visit resulted in a pleasant surprise with soft shell clams, fiddleheads in cream with rhubarb OH so delicious, and a few other tasty creations. GREAT place if you like to eat small bits and talk, eat some more and talk, eat some more... Great place to meet a friend after work have a cool tall one, some interesting menu creations with excellent personalized service.

Interesting and imaginative cocktails

Great food, in small portions meant to be shared, with a good selection of local beers and great cocktails. We sat at the bar and followed the barmans recommendations and we had great food and great drinks. I highly recommend it.

Ideal place for interesting cocktails

We found this place on Google while searching for a good place for cocktails. We were not let down! They were great. We also got the Cheesecuterie - an assortment of meat and cheeses as well as two porkbelly bao (amazing) and some oysters. It was my first time having blue cheese and I was blown away. The atmosphere is nice, its a fairly small place, the music was quiet enough to have a conversation without shouting and there was some cool art on the walls. Also, the staff were very nice and had the patience to thoroughly answer our questions.

Awesome spot for a casual date night! Food was fresh and tasty. Cocktails were creative and fun.
