Disappointing Service Experience I recently visited this restaurant for the first time with a friend, and unfortunately, our experience was not what we had hoped for. Upon being seated, we informed our waiter that it was our first visit, but he seemed disinterested and simply handed us the menu without taking our drink orders. After receiving our appetizers, he returned only to refill our water. He then took our main dish order without clearing the table of our appetizer plates. It wasn't until our main courses arrived that he finally cleaned up the table and took our drink order. Throughout the meal, the waiter displayed a lack of enthusiasm and only did the bare minimum to attend to us. My friend and I both noticed this and agreed that the service left much to be desired. While the food might have been enjoyable, the overall dining experience was marred by the inattentive service. I hope the management takes note of these details to improve their customer experience in the future.

Made a quick reso after a Christmas party. The food is very basic but done really well with great flavor. I had low expectations for the tater tot onion dip but it was delicious! The chicken bites were so crispy with a great buffalo sauce. The pizza was solid, but the star was the pineapple cake. Reliably a great place on the waterfront with wonderful vibes and great service. I do recommend a reservation.

Amazing atmosphere and service - cozy, friendly, helpful! Now, was it the best meal of my life, no… but I absolutely would go again! I had the fish and chips, the fish was salty and the batter didn’t have a lot of flavour, but the fries were yummy and our shareables (a tater tot one and a chicken one) that we started with were really good too.

Had an amazing dinner here. I feel like the food was very tasty which was surprising as I'm very picky. We were at quite a small round table for five people though and it was a little bit difficult to fit all the food under the table. Put the serving staff was nice and let my friends keep their luggage at the restaurant so they can run to the airport right after.

We had dinner at this restaurant and were overall satisfied! The place impressed us with its stylish design and cozy atmosphere — it’s a lovely spot to spend time. We ordered the smoked salmon pizza and tacos. The pizza was tasty, though the tacos weren’t quite to our taste, but that’s, of course, a matter of personal preference. We plan to come back again to try something new. A great place for an enjoyable evening!

The atmosphere was quite nice, and it was really crowded. Unfortunately, I got there late, so there wasn't much left to order. I ended up getting a burger, fried chicken, and a salad, along with three desserts. The strawberry one was pretty good, but the coconut one tasted a bit strange—I didn't really like it. There was also an ice cream dessert that I found way too sweet.

During my recent visit to Halifax, I had the pleasure of dining at Salt & Ash, a charming spot that stands out for its warm atmosphere and decor, which strikes a perfect balance between modern and rustic. The welcoming vibe immediately put me at ease, and the attentive staff added to the overall positive experience. What particularly caught my attention was the presence of vegetarian options on the menu. The vegetarian option I chose, the Pesto + White Bean Spag-O, was very good. The Margherita pizza was also one of the best I’ve had in the area. We couldn’t make a reservation as the restaurant was fully booked, but the patio operates on a walk-in basis, and we were seated within 10 minutes of our arrival, which was quite convenient. Salt & Ash is a recommendable place in Halifax, especially for those looking for a cozy setting and straightforward but well-executed dishes. The vegetarian options, though not extensive, are varied enough to satisfy those who appreciate this type of cuisine.

We came on a Sunday to play bingo and had such a good time! What a great way to get people to come out and also enjoy happy hour that started at 9. Happy hour special is $10 cocktails six dollar wines and they had a few other things on the menu for drink specials. The atmosphere is super cute and there’s an indoor fireplace. The food is also really tasty. We had the tater tot appetizer and the kale Caesar salad and the pizza of the week. The cocktails are really good but a bit too sweet so I would stick to the wine or bar rail if you prefer not sweet drinks.

Food was delicious, everything was awesome. Service was great, our servers were really nice and thoughtful. I would eat here again for sure. Ambiance was just cozy. Parking: Street Parking is not the greatest, just a few spots. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy to access from Lower Water Street. No issue to access the restaurant.

My girlfriend and I went for Sunday brunch. The service was great and the waitress was very nice. My girlfriend got the breakfast skillet which was amazing. I got the tomato soup and steak sandwich. The sandwich was very good but the soup was so small i couldnt even dip the sandwich in the bowl, I had about 2 spoonfuls and was left wanting. Overall would recommend just dont get the tomato soup.

We didnt make it past the door. There was a private event, and we were treated with a disrespectful attitude and pushed out in the pouring rain. We have tried to communicate with them, and there no response. Very disappointed!

December 15, 2024

We had a reservation at 9 for 10 pm which was the only time they had available and that was fine however they did not inform us when we called and took a late reservation that anyone under 19 is not allowed to stay past 10. It is not on the website and it is hard to find when looking up NS liquor regulations. They workers were incredibly rude when asking the one person at our party of 10 to leave saying your time is expiring and you are expected to know NS liquor rules when it was our first time there and most restaurants in halifax allow underage guests in at least one area past 10 pm. Service was very poor. Do not recommend.

Here at the restaurant now at 2:40pm on the Saturday. Server has the personality to match the cold weather outside. Was hoping to enjoy the fish and chips but was coldly told only what s on the menu . Which was the brunch menu ..that miraculously becomes a midday menu at 3pm which includes fish and chips. Ordered anyways. Maybe I can bump this up to 3 stars if the food is exceptional. But so far not holding up much hope. For the manager ..it was 4 of us. 3 asians and a Jamaican. Update: at 3:01PM. The table beside us (a Caucasian couple), miraculously received an order of Fish and Chips. I brought this to the attention of another server and spoke to the manager. I expressed our displeasure at being treated differently than the table beside us. She apologized for not communicating the (flexibility of the menu availability) to our server ..which I responded with your server knew what to do and he did what he wanted . The food we ordered and received was excellent quality. We paid the bill (received a discount for my meal) and I tipped an adjusted amount because I know the server will have to tip out at the end of his shift. My opinion is very simple. Great restaurant, great food and atmosphere if you look like a local. But if you re not from around here ..just make sure your server isn t named Gabe.

The food was great, got the pizza of the week and my girlfriend got the salmon pizza. The pizza was amazing, crust was great because I think they use a wood stove oven. The atmosphere was great and the layout and scenery was absolutely beautiful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, easily the best

The food didn t meet our expectations either my pizza was burnt and lacked flavor. For the price , we definitely expected better.

I ve been to Salt n Ash before, but this visit was incredibly disappointing. The pizza was burnt to a crisp literally charred. I m baffled that the server even served it without addressing the issue. For a place with such a strong reputation, I expected much better. It seems the service standards have really declined.

I was clearly unlucky with the choice of dish. A very modest plate of escalopes with bacon, and the escalope a la grill is burnt bitter and baked, so to speak, lard. Fsyo. And no side dish. Only green onions. Cool. Hello pancreatitis and cancer. Its a shame, we had high hopes for this place.

Food ,Service ,Atmosphere was very good .BUT next day all 5 of us had DIRRHEA. We contacted the restaurant to tell what happened and what could be the cause to avoid this happening again and to others. Its a nice place to eat out. Crowded on Fri afternoon but still spacious, tables are not too close to each other. Lovely fireplace in the middle, feels cozy and the view is great. Food was good, also enjoyed Martini Espresso. They book places for two on the phone which is awesome, it matters to me. The service was great and fast but I didnt like a big metal box of napkins and some cutlery right on the table, forks and knives were minor scratched all over, they were different and doesnt match the place itself. Menu is also a mix between fast food and fine dine, like someone hasnt decided yet whats the place like. Water tasted tap. I wouldnt go again at least I knew they changed cutlery. The place looks great outside and inside so it makes fine dining impression until you try it.

November 22, 2024

I used to love this place like literally every Friday night or Saturday night. I went so many times to sit at the bar facing the kitchen and watch them cook my food with my partner. I did not go back since after summer this year, after being refused for a table for me my partner and kids this time. They said they had no tables available but a friend and his group who came to watch the boat race were offered the table for 4 just few minutes later. I thought maybe they refused us this time because we were with our young children. I won t go back there again.

First of all, the service was incredible! The staff was super nice and helpful. All the food was presented beautifully and the atmosphere was worth the price. Everyone at our table that order fish, pizza, pasta were super happy with their choices. Their food was delicious and well-portioned. As vegans, it seemed our food portions and quality were very lacking considering our bill was the same as the other guests. Vegetarian options: Not plentiful or extremely tasty

I brought my mother to this waterfront restaurant for brunch, eager to share a lovely experience with her. It was her first visit, and we were both excited. However, upon arrival, we were told by the hostess that the restaurant was fully booked. We were surprised, as the website made no mention of needing a reservation for brunch. The hostess cited a large group that had reserved the space, which should have been communicated more clearly. When my mom gently pointed out that the website should indicate the need to book in advance, we were met with hostility. A staff member, who identified herself as the manager, confronted us as we were leaving. She raised her voice and accused my mother of being rude to the hostess. When I asked for clarification, the only explanation she offered was criticism of my mom s voice. It felt as though she was targeting my mother s foreign accent rather than addressing any actual rudeness. I am extremely disappointed in the treatment we received at this restaurant. The bias displayed by the so-called manager was unacceptable, and such behavior reflects poorly on the establishment. We left feeling unwelcome and disrespected, and I can t recommend this place based on our experience.

Friends who live in Halifax brought us here for a special dinner together. It was busy, decor is very nice, however very noisy. Two of us ordered the lobster chowder which was good but nothing special. We were shocked that at $25 each, the medium sized bowls were barely half full! The piece of cornbread that accompanied it was the best part. No complaints about the cod dinner, but we really felt ripped off with the cost of the chowder. Ridiculous! The next evening we went to a restaurant in Lunenburg and had a delicious FULL bowl of cowder, full of seafood, for $15 in a very touristy area. Our friends were very disappointed with your restaurant and will not be returning.

October 22, 2024

I recently celebrated my birthday at this venue, and while the food did not impress, it was the service that truly detracted from the overall experience. Here s a brief summary: * We waited 25 minutes just for water and eventually had to flag down a passing waitress. * Although the ambiance was pleasant, the atmosphere is quite open and noisy. Many at our table struggled just to hear the person across from them. * I ordered the lamb for two with a friend. Our waitress brought it out on a board with no plates, so we ended up sharing from the appetizer plates. * The mac and cheese side was simply macaroni with butter and cheese broiled on top lacking in flavor. The most unsettling part of the evening occurred when we saw a waiter sweeping the floor (where a glass had shattered) and, to our dismay, using the same broom to then sweep off the table and reset it. While this was quite unappetizing, it did lead to some shocked laughs at our table! To conclude the evening, it took our waitress about 45 minutes to finalize our bill, during which at least half of our tables orders were incorrect. Although this mishap didn t completely spoil our night, it was quite disappointing, particularly since we were celebrating a 40th birthday. I strongly suggest considering one of the other nearby establishments instead of this one.

Visited on a Sunday at noon. No reservation. We sat on the patio and they had the heaters on which was nice. My brother and I ordered from the brunch menu. The smoked meat skillet. It sounded good and maybe would have been if you were horribly hungover. Eggs on top were fine but underneath was the greasiest most disgusting dish ever sitting in a crapload of grease. I have no idea where the Gruyère cheese was. Waste of money. Service was pretty attentive. Server asked how the dish was as she cleared our plates which were full except for the eggs on top. I told her bluntly, nicely and honestly. She didn t even blink and said ok thanks!

Service and taste wise Salt + Ash Beach House was pretty standard for the price, at least among restaurants in halifax. The atmosphere, on the other hand, was amazing and definitely among the best for restaurants I have visited. Food wise, we tried the beach house cheeseburger and the pizza of the week (cheeseburger pizza). My partner got a cocktail, which we noticed all seemed to be named after beaches in Nova Scotia. For dessert, we tried their german chocolate cake and pinapple cake and were both extremely satisfied with our choices. Overall, this is a great place to eat, with amazing desserts and atmosphere.

The cod was excellent, and the Reuben was damn near perfect. (I prefer a Reuben without mustard!) The tuna crudo was a 10/10, the sauce and garnishes were perfectly matched, and didnt overpower the fresh tuna. The French fries were sooooo good! Must be double or triple cooked because they were amazing. Would go just for the fries honestly. Topped it off with some nice port! A fantastic evening, well definitely be back!

Update 2: came for dinner during happy hours and had the meat pizza and a cocktail (The Cove). Pizza crust was great, meat was good (a bit spicy) but the best pizza I tasted was the mushroom. It had a really creamy garlicky white sauce and lots of mushroom varieties. My cocktail was delicious (very sweet and too easy to drink). Wait staff was friendly. Great night Update 1: decided to give this place a second try and went to brunch Well I feel more disappointed to be honest. I feel like this place is definitely a burger and fries kind of place. Location and atmosphere is great. Presentation is great. Deep fried things are the only things that do well, and everything else is just disappointing. We had the Dutch baby, shaka shuka and the chicken and maple popovers. FYI Dutch baby and popover is the same thing and they re not very good. Very tough - I could barely cut it, it was very tough and thick and chewy like a failed pancake what made it worse was our round table was not stable, as we were hacking at it the table threatened to spill all of our drinks. Maybe it needs a steak knife or scissors. Fresh blueberries and raspberries were nice, real whipped cream was also great. The cinnamon sugar along the crust (the only edible part) was good-it tasted like a donut. 3/5 The fried chciken and maple popovers had barely any sauce. So plain chicken (to be fair this batter was good) plain taters and a plain popover/dutchbaby. We asked for more syrup which made it better but by then we already ate 3 of 4 tiny chicken pieces. 3/5 The shaka shuka was a nice flavor but the eggs were overcooked by the time it arrived. 4/5 I m just glad I didn t spend a fortune eating here. But maybe just order deep fried food (fried items come out perfectly fried: crispy but not greasy) , normal pizza and burgers here, anything that requires more skill will be a letdown. Beautiful restaurant, nice views would have been a great place to relax and drink during the summer. We had 2 holiday cocktails that were okay. A friend had the tot-cho which was underwhelming in flavours but it was at least nice and crunchy. 4/5 I had the holiday pork, Brussel sprout white sauce pizza and it was too tart. I winced with every bite. 2/5 My friend had the fish taco, it was quite good, very fresh and crunchy. 5/5 Another friend had the benedict on the pizza which was cool. Benedict was normal, pizza was normal. But to have those two flavors at once was fun. 4/5 The corn bread was very oily and not great at all. 0/5 We came during the holidays so there were only 2 waitstaff for the 10 tables. Not extremely busy yet the waitress barely glanced at the table and blamed the lack of staffing for the wait. But she was friendly so that was nice 3/5 The vibes here are great but I wouldn t come here expecting amazing food Id only recommend the fish taco.

The food was great but the service was poor. Waitresses and waiters had poor service to us, we weren t dressed in suits so they assumed they could slack I suppose. My thing is, if you re gonna slack don t make it so obvious. Caught them whispering and pointing at us, snickering, I m not one to assume but it was obvious. One waiter (who was quite rude) came and saw us once, forgot about us and then we suddenly had a new waitress, her service was slightly better but still felt like we were inconveniences. I d describe their employees as snotty. Some were great but that s the vibe we took from that experience. Amazing food, great service, a beautiful view off the patio onto the Atlantic waters and Georges Island, and all at a reasonable price point. I highly recommend coming here, as the Shrimp Puttanesca pizza was scrumptious and the Haddock Tacos that my wife ordered were arguably better than even the pizza I was craving. I ended up getting the berry Cider, while my Wife got a virgin Mojito (customized with less simple syrup as she simply wasnt in the mood for overly sweet). Service was very slow for food and general table maintenance. Food was good when it finally came. Kids food was quick and good. Server was friendly but management were rude and unapologetic. Mistakes on bill. Scallop appetizer sauce was bitter and unappealing

The waiter/waitress can make or break your dining experience, it our case he ruined our experience. He was clearly in a foul mood and not an ounce of personality so it went downhill right away. Drinks and appy came right away then 45 minutes later still no dinner and he was clearly avoiding us. I get it is the kitchens fault but stop by the table and touch base, maybe get us another drink . Atmosphere seems nice and food was ok when it finally did arrive.

We are from the prairies and wanted to dine overlooking the harbour so we booked ahead for 6. We were told they couldnt book the patio specifically but we could ask when we arrived which we did. The host told us no, our table had ben set aside for us and that was it, there was no tables for 6 available on the patio. There were empty round tables so I asked if we could slide 2 together. No, we werent allowed to move tables. I asked if at least we could sit at the tables at the window as the table they had for us was in the centre of the room and the reason we came was for the view. No, we were told that table was reserved! So the logic escapes me, you cant ask to be moved until you arrive, and when you arrive its too late to ask. The host was intent on our taking the table set for us. She seemed so determined. We said this was unacceptable to us so she went for the manager. When she arrived I said maybe we could wait for a patio table to become available? She said no, the table they set was the only table available to us, or we could cancel. We cancelled, the restauraunt was only about 40% full. The manager said I had caused her host stress, And we all just looked at each other in bewilderment. We were just trying to create a solution so we could get the harbourview we came for. This was not their strength apparently. We had a fine harbour view mea at a stress free restaraunt elswhere!

Really good food, well prepared. But the noise level in the dining room was way too loud, its not an appropriate place for a couple to enjoy, because most of the tables were used by groups and the talks went so loud!

The atmosphere is absolutely lively here! I love the beach themed interior decorations and the fireplace is extremely cozy to be seated next to. The service was fantastic and all of the waiters were kind and often checked up on you to make sure everything was good. However, the food was very disappointing. The pizza was so thin it was unable to hold itself up when you went to go pick it up to eat it and the taste was mediocre. The only yummy thing was the donair sauce that is made from scratch in the restaurant. I was excited to try the coconut cream pie since it was my favourite pie that my mother would make when I was a kid, however, the taste was not fantastic and the crust was super hard like a cracker. Overall, I had a good time here because of the lovely atmosphere and service, but the food is not worth coming back for and is extremely expensive to be such low quality. I would not recommend coming here for the best food that Halifax offers, but it is a nice place to relax by the waterfront if you re willing to put up with the low quality of the food.

Food and drinks were below average we had the seafood boil which was padded with a ton of mussels some of which were not fresh / inedible. It was expensive for what it was. Also had a gin cocktail which was also not balanced/bland. But the atmosphere is nice on the patio - get a great view of the harbour. Service was also good.

Posting the email sent to Salt + Ash from our organization as their team barely had a response to us: -- We had our event at Salt + Ash on Thursday July 11. The event was planned and booked back in November 2023. I want to bring up a couple things that happened. We arrived a little early for our 6:30PM reservation so we were told we could sit on the outdoor patio and have a drink. The server we had outside was amazing, he deserves a 10 star review. We went to our table at 6:45PM, we understand we were a little late to sit but we were instructed we could not pay for our drinks inside and so it took time for us to all pay. Once inside the server we had, (I believe her name was Deb) was extremely rude. She was slamming drinks on tables and didnt come in very often. We had to get up to get our own water at one point. A few people at the table only had their glass filled once. We did not receive our appetizers until 7:35PM and our main course until 8:25PM. One of our people is gluten free and was given a salad with croutons. I guess when the server remembered she came and ripped the salad from her mid bite. Didnt even say why just put a new one in front of her. Rochelle our event planner and our executive director went to speak with the manager (Maggie) about why we had to wait so long for food to arrive. Maggie blamed everything on the kitchen and stated that fish and chips are hard to cook because there is only one pot. I would like to know why this was even on our menu then if it is so difficult to prepare? Maggie completely dismissed what Rochelle and ED were saying and replied with I have never got that feedback about Deb and that our bill was being closed. After realizing that conversation with Maggie was going nowhere Rochelle and ED sat down to eat the food that finally came out. People were clearly still eating and the server came and started clearing plates at 8:40PM, she ripped the drink menus off the table so fast, it was clear she was not happy we were there. At 9:04PM we were asked if we wanted coffee. At 9:15PM dessert was brought out and at 9:35PM maggie came over to figure out the final bill and provided us with what we already had. This took her 10 minutes. This was the worst experience we have ever had. To plan something like this for our Indigenous Physicians and have the service we had is not ok. We were 15 minutes late to our reservation because we were not allowed to pay for drinks inside, this is no excuse for poor service and extremely long wait times. Being that we had a preplanned menu this should not have happened, if we had a reservation like everyone else and was ordering off the regular menu then I could understand a longer wait, not the time we had to wait for food though. This was unacceptable. This experience was not something I would wish on anyone, it was embarrassing to our staff that planned this night at your location and it was traumatic to our Indigenous Physician members to be treated so poorly. ------- After having sent this email our event coordinator replied I have spent some time with the Leadership team discussing your event. We are very sorry that you had such a negative experience with us for your dinner on July 11th! We have decided to promo any additional costs for your event, and will not be invoicing you for the outstanding amount. Thank you again for choosing Freehand Hospitality, and I m sorry that we did not meet your expectations. ------ We had already spent $750, and paid in cash for aclohol. We owed $200 on our invoice, which we were not charged for. Read the reviews and know what may happen to you.

I gave this restaurant three tries and really wanted to love it. The atmosphere is fantastic, but the food just isn t to the same level at all. On one occasion, I had the fried chicken, which was really over cooked and dry and stringy, and it had next to no seasoning. Despite telling the staff this at the first check in, nothing was done to remedy this (although I didn t push it further). On another occasion, I had the cod, which was very fresh, but again, very little seasoning. My third visit to Salt and Ash, I had the lobster mac and cheese, which was quite good. Finally! Anyway, overall, this place is good for cocktails and ambiance, but it is underwhelming for the price and quality of food. There are other restaurants on the boardwalk that are comparable but have food to the same level of their ambiance!

We went to Salt and Ash for a friends bday dinner. It felt like we were at a bar. It was extremely loud. Not an ideal conversation atmosphere, but not horrible. We absolutely loved our dinner at Salt and Ash! We were seated quickly but offered a spot at the bar while we waited for a table. Very aesthetic interior and patio right on the water. We were amazed by the pizza and cheeseburger. The sauces on everything were flavourful, the smashburger beef melted in our mouth, and the pizza crust was phenomenal. Very fair prices for the quality and service. Shoutout to our friendly and attentive waiter Michael! We d absolutely return!

We went to Salt and Ash as a last resort, having just arrived in Halifax around 10pm and most other sit down restaurants being closed. I am very glad this was our situation because Salt and Ash was INCREDIBLE. The atmosphere was fun and energetic, with people all around playing bingo and and having a great time. something I think happens every Sunday night? The servers were great and the food came out quick, we showed up 15 minutes before the kitchen closed for the night. Now onto the food. Oh my god. We got the maple roasted cod, fish and chips, and the cheeseburger meals and all 3 were to die for. If you also come from a place where fresh seafood isn t accessible, you need to try some when you come here. We also didn t have any dietary restrictions but they seem like they re on top of it if you do have some as the made sure to ask us! I m not sure when I ll be in Halifax again but I will definitely make it a point to come again

Service was amazing as was the ambiance. The pizzas we ordered were embarrassing. Thinner than flatbread...soggy. worst Ive had. $25 for lobster corn chowder was very poor quality. Menu was very lean in offerings so you would think they mastered a short menu but no. As a Chef, you really dropped the ball. I was very direct on complimenting server and as direct on the quality of food to the manager. He did offer an alternative but we opted to pay our bill and leave. He removed the 2 pizzas from the bill which was appreciated. Wont visit again as there are many many other restaurants within 20 feet.

Terrible experience. Seating outside is so uncomfortable. Chairs too low and lean back. A number of people complained. We sat for over 15 min. Our server never brought water and did not take a drink order. Menu is pedestrian and uninventive. With the prices this restaurant is commanding, it has some serious competition on the Harbourfront. Not prepared to suffer any longer with absent service; we walked out. I have never had to take this action before. We walked over to The Bicycle Thief where we were greeted, seated and beautifully served. The reader needs to know it gives me no pleasure to write such a negative review.

My family decided to get our lunch here after walking the boardwalk since the patio space looked nice, and it was a beautiful day. The good: The Jerk Haddock tacos I got were pretty decent, although the jerk is a bit misleading as I didnt really feel any spice, the seasoning it did have was tasty though. The margarita pizza that was also ordered at the table was really tasty. The bad: Having a full pop spilled on me by our server at the beginning of the visit was rather tragic. Especially when my supposedly comped meal and drink was not properly placed on the bill. It was sent back to be fixed, and still came back wrong again. A manager not directly interveening seems wild to me at that point. Plus the service was slow and not great overall.

I m new to Canada and trying to find my feet, my places and my people! It was my first time at Salt and Ash and it was not a disappointment. Lunch was beautiful due to many factors including the ambience, the fact that I could see the water from my vantage point, the food, and the company I went to lunch with. I had the deer burger with smoked pork belly, Beemster cheese sauce, lingonberry mostarda (except this as I m not a fan of mustard) and arugula, with other things; I can t recollect. The burger was good and juicy without being messy but personally the star of the occasion were the fries (or chips depending on where you re from). I ll go back again and again just for the fries! So good, crispy and a good size. None of that limp, skinny mess they serve at other places. Salt and Ash know their fries. Did I mention that the burger was great? Haha.

Loved this place! The drinks are amazing and the atmosphere is relaxed. One thing I liked was the layout, not cramped with people sitting on top of you. Food was great, we got the Caesar salad, scallops and tot chos. The service was great too! Would absolutely recommend Food

Overall experience was underwhelming. Our service person as polite but seemed very rushed. Didn t really engage, We had to ask for desert menus, coffee, tea wasn t offered. Brussel sprouts were mushy. Seems like they just wanted to turn the table asap. Cooks were playing in appropriate music in the kitchen. Just wasn t a welcoming atmosphere overall. Food was ok. Won t hurry back, too many other places to try in this city.

So Ive been wanting to go here for breakfast for some time now, but it always seemed so busy. Finally got a chance to go and was super excited. During burger week last year, I had seen something going by our table quite often for breakfast. I had to stop one of the waiters and ask what it was. I have never had a Dutch baby before so I knew I had to come back for it. I did have to ask our waiter what the fried chicken and maple popovers were, it was tempting to get both. But I stuck to what I wanted and got tater tots and hollandaise for a side. The Dutch baby on the menu gave this description: Baked sweet vanilla popover pancake, chantilly cream, blueberries, cinnamon. I didnt notice cinnamon but there was also raspberries which was a bonus. This was so good. The juice from the berries helped with the puffy crisper sides of the popover. The cream may have been where the cinnamon was but tasted more vanilla. It was so good all together. Tater tots were also good, they had an onion flavor to them. The hollandaise was not good if thats what I got served. It tasted like mayo. It was thick like mayo. The waiter thought I might have gotten the wrong thing and offered replacement, but the taters were half gone. He did take that charge off my bill which was nice and appreciated. It wasnt too busy but seemed like only a few working the tables. Our waiter was pretty quick with us. Took hardly any time to get our food. We even got served before the table of 5 beside us even though they ordered first. I also asked for a seat beside the window which they were able to do. You can see why it gets busy here in the nicer months. Nice view and great staff.

Great atmosphere with lots of natural light coming in the windows on three walls. A cozy fire in one side of the dining area would make this place very nice at night as well. Seating for at least 100 I would guess, with about half of the tables being stand-alone two seaters, some are half cushioned wall bench/half chair, and at least one six seater that I noticed, but there are probably a few of those for bigger groups. Nice, simple, modern vibe with neutral colors. Great service. 1st visit: Feb 2024. My friend and I split several dishes to maximize what we could try. The Fire Roasted Scallops were amazing - our favorite. Not cheap at $24 for four scallops, but worth the indulgence of the perfect combination of flavors & textures. The roasted squash (puree at the bottom), smoked butter, bacon (lardons, in my opinion), pumpkin & fennel brittle (pepitas with sesame seeds). The Shrimp & Grits ($17 - onion relish, lobster bay butter, everything spice) were also very good, although we found the grits themselves to be more standard, the shrimp were excellent. The Fire-roasted brussel sprouts ($14 - honey glaze, mezcal, lemon aioli) were very good as well, as a 3rd shareable item, starting to not be as hungry, but definitely satisfied. If you wanted a light lunch, Id stop here after sharing these three items. For dinner as we were, we added also the Grilled Maitake Mushrooms ($23 - black truffle, potato confit, cashew cream, pumpkin seeds - were also delicious to mix the tastes & feel, and a gorgeous presentation. We opted to add yet a 5th item to our order after finishing off these, the Jalapeno Cornbread ($8 - tequila lime butter) - which was incredibly moist, almost greasy, but very bursting with flavor and weight, for the size of the piece served. Although not sweet, this adequately filled the place of a dessert for us. 2nd visit: for my birthday in Mar 2024. Another friend and I came because I liked it enough to come back the next month, and he was curious to try it as well. Cocktails: He tried the Warm & Fuzzy ($12 jim beam bourbon, apple cinnamon syrup, lemon juice, cinnamon sugar rim, dehydrated apple spice and it tasted exactly as it sounds, yummy). He then asked for a Eight O Five cocktail, but they ran out of the chocolate & peppermint syrup for the rim, which woudl make this drink what it is, so he passed on that and tried the Backyards ($12 lunazul blanco tequila, grapefruit & lime juice, citric acid, soda, grapefruit salt rim) the rim was a bit too salty & over-powering, but the drink still good and balanced. I tried the Crystal Crescent #3 ($12 - blue lobster vodka soda, benjamin bridge piquette, charred citrus, grendadine, soda, drunken cherry - which was refreshing and seemed flat, but that was ok). Food: We got the scallops again and he was just as impressed. Then we tried the Tater Tot-Chos ($14 - sour cream, salsa, avocado, cheddar, jalapeno) - which come in a mini cast iron pan. Deep fried little cylindric tater tots were very tasty, with the sour cream drizzled all over, dollops of the avocado cream as Id call it on the side. We inhaled these. As a main, he tried the Fish & Chips ($25 - salt & vinegar fries, slaw, tartar sauce) where I tasted a bit of it all. The piece of fish is quite large, dominating the place, cooked to perfect where you basically dont have to chew the fish, only the batter, but a good balance of each. The fries were salty but the salt & vinegar powder on them, or whatever it was, was great. Then we decided to try the pizza of the week - Hawaiian. It is probably equivalent to your average medium sized at a normal pizzeria, maybe a touch under at what looked like 12 inches. Very good thin crust with a proper bubbled crust on the edges, a few large pieces of bacon that looked a bit under cooked, but were fine, some small slices of pineapple, jalapeno, excellent pepperoni (perhaps Brothers?), sauce & cheese to make an overall well-rounded pie. We each ate a slice and I took the rest home. I look forward to returning here!

More like Salt + Trash. Food was basic - so obvious they re just trying to flip tables quickly. Great space but they rely on their donair-adjacent beach house sauce which isn t that great at all. No need to return. This city doesn t need another wood fired oven pizza

I was pleased with the roasted Brussels sprouts, jalapeño corn bread and tater tots. The lobster pizza however was disappointing, soaked in cheese and tiny pieces of lobster which I couldn t taste. Overpriced, underdelivered.

Wonderful service! Great location! Nice and cozy interior, comfortable sitting areas with ocean view and fireplace. Love it! Good food! But could be better and not so standard as everywhere else. And again, deserts could be more tasty and more than five (dm me, if you need more info about it). Fine dining should be here! But... not yet... And please, black coffee (Americano) could be done the same way as espresso, just with add more water! Believe, this place will be the best fine dine kitchen in Halifax.

From the incredibly warm and cozy atmosphere to the top notch service, everything about this brunch was magic. Our server was incredibly and attentive. However, the star of the show was the incredible breakfast I had. The Bonfire Breakfast is definitely a top 3 breakfast plate in the city. If you re looking for a full home style breakfast with a modern twist then run to Salt and Ash. Can t wait to come back for the other incredible menus. Vegetarian options: A decent number of veggie specific or vegetarian friendly dishes across all menus. My friend had the avocado eggs Benedict and said it was incredible! Plus the tater tots are a must and definitely vegetarian friendly! Dietary restrictions: Straight away we were asked about any dietary restrictions and while we didn t have any, I ve never had someone be so prompt about it. Shows that they care a lot about customer safety and preference Wheelchair accessibility: Power doors and quite open setting seem to allow for easy maneuverability for a wheelchair user. However, as I don t use one I can t say for certain if it would meet a persons needs.

Got burned Scallops starter. I thought it maybe just one mistake. But the Strip loin sides were also fully black and burned. Example potatoes were fully black, turnips were burned too. We ordered Medium done Strip loin and got few raw pieces and end were burned. It was too noisy inside, as the music was too lound. Nobody can hear you well and you need to scream. The only thing that was tasty and good was the fries we ordered as sides.

As a business owner myself I never EVER want to leave a bad review but after such an awful birthday experience it got even worse after I opened my packed up meal to eat it the next afternoon. Last night I came in for my birthday with friends . My husband booked this event in advance and I was so disappointed to be seated at a bench and table directly beside the cold entrance . Sitting on a wooden hard bench . No back . All of us were cold and uncomfortable . I heard such great things so decided to stick it out. Before being a business owner I was a waitress for all my youth years and I know service can be a little slow when it s busy but we waited an hour where my husband became upset and grabbed a waiter when we finally got to order food. Between the six or seven of us there not a single one of us enjoyed our meals . I got fish and chips and the batter was so citrusy and sour plus the salt and vinegar fries . I had two bites and I couldn t eat anymore of it . Of all my food the best was the pull apart bread I ordered before my meal. My husbands burger was burnt and tasted so charred he struggled to enjoy a single bite of it . I was so upset with this experience and when my sister got me chocolate cake it was so sweet and I was feeling so special only to be totally disappointed at how overpowering bitter chocolate it was . The slice was huge which a girl can t complain over but it was extremely overpowering. The chocolate sauce overtop was very bitter - I hate dark chocolate . Def an acquired taste . Some love it so I didn t complain and simply didn t eat it. Not for me. I was sad that everyone was complaining and none of us enjoyed our meals but I let it go to just be grateful for a good night of laughs . Until today when I decided to give the fish and chips a go and stomach eating it . I dumped it onto my plate and was disgusted and horrified that I could have choked on this close pin in my food ! Our server was wonderful but I m extremely disappointed in our experience after hearing such good things

I ordered a pepperoni pizza there. The meal wasnt bad, but the server was annoying, coming to us every five minutes and not letting us have a conversation. It seemed like she was trying to finish her shift and waiting for us to leave. Its better for the restaurant to address its servers behavior with customers. People pay to be treated well and spend a nice time, not to struggle with the server.
