1707 Grafton St, Halifax, NS B3J 2C6, Canada
Warm, rustic spot for organic & seasonal New American fare, plus local craft beer & cocktails.
As a visiting Primatologist, the name of this restaurant already warrants a visit. Then tipped by a friend that they offer a vegan Donair in their menu makes this place an irresistible stop for lunch. We ordered the vegan Donair and Haddocks & Roasties. Both dishes were delicious. I actually liked the vegan Donair more. Though, I'm not a fan of the potatoes but that's probably just my weird taste buds wanting more of a crispy potato wedges than roasted ones. Our server was attentive and friendly. If the owner is reading this, some of the primates in your restaurants are apes not monkeys (sorry for being a pedantic primatologist).
We love this chain restaurant located the cross street to our hotel. They have kids Manuel and cranes and painting , kids are concentrated on painting. The kids manual is price friendly, food tastes good. We sat in the first floor, there is second floor as well. Very friendly to the family who has a little kids. Will recommend to friends and my clients here. Location is convenient, easy to access waterfront or other places in the downtown.
My husband and I ate here for dinner. I had the rice bowl with added tofu and it was pretty good! We also had the tofu chocolate pie which was delicious. Such a cozy vibe as well, really liked the atmosphere they’ve created. Would definitely eat here again!
Came here and got their scallop pasta dish. The bread was tasty and nicely charred. The scallops were sweet and tender. However, the scallops and pasta were both underseasoned, which kind of made the whole dish feel lackluster. The pasta sauce was also not anything special. I also usually expect when a dish like this comes with bread, it's to be used to soak up the extra sauce, but there wasn't really any sauce left at the end.
We recently ate at this place for the first time and tried their Daily Vegetarian entree. It was some kind of pasta with a tasty Rose sauce and lots of fresh veggies like peppers. Honestly, it was one of the best pastas I've ever had, even better than the Bicycle Thief's! The flavors were spot on, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. You can tell they use high-quality, local ingredients, and the chef knows what they're doing. If you're looking for a great meal, I highly recommend checking out the wooden monkey especially if you're Vegan/Vegetarian. Their Daily Vegetarian entree is a must-try!!
A very nice spot close to Halifax's waterfront. The service is amazing here, the person who was waiting at our table was simply amazing, she gave us pointers on what to visit in the city and what are some interesting spots to check out further away. The food and drinks are nice and nothing short of what you expect from similar places. The 5 stars for us was the service and the friendly staff. Honestly it's worth a visit more than once. Highly recommended if you're in the area and want a place with good food, delicious drinks, a friendly face and a cozy comfortable atmosphere.
The restaurant has a great location near the Citadel. We enjoyed our food but it took a long time to receive our meals. If you have more time to spend and aren’t in a hurry, it is a solid choice. They also have outdoor seating.
I just finished eating, I’m literally still at my table, I couldn’t wait to let others know about this place. Food is amazing, you can taste the difference of local products. Scallop pasta is one of the best things I’ve eaten in a number of months. The mushrooms are very mushroomy, so if you like mushrooms, great choice. The blueberry pie is crust, 1032 blueberries with (I’m assuming) a bit of sugar, and then crust. It’s just chock full of blueberries. And the crust tastes like a sugar cone, which is something I’ve never said about pie crust but now I want all my pie crusts to taste like that. Definitely a great choice! So happy I came! And, of course, the shop local initiative just makes everything better 😊
What a great place I will absolutely be back. Both our server Hanna and the young man who s name I unfortunately didn t get could not have been any more friendly and welcoming. The quiet atmosphere of that winters evening was perfect and it gave us the opportunity to ask some questions about the local vendors used for the restaurant. The fresh local product is obviously something that is important to both our server, the chef and the owners as she spoke with such passion about it also able to list the ingredients in a dish an asked about. I wish I had more than 5 stars to award on this review. Thank you.
We were there a bit early, so not many patrons. The ambiance was good, though. The staff was polite and accommodating. Our foods were healthy and refreshing. Overall, it was a great experience.
Went here with a group of 8 table was ready and service was fast and efficient. Didn t feel rushed at all. Drinks and food was awesome and decent GF options on menu.
This is a very cozy restaurant that specializes in healthy scratch cooking- no additives . Vegetarian options: Yes, there are vegetarian options.
We were not treated well at all.It was supposed to be a family dinner with my kids, the waiter came and spoke to me in a loud and Sarcastic tone about keeping my kids confined,(not like they were running around the entire place, again even if they were, there is always a better way to speak to customers. I actually regret not walking out of there! .I will personally not recommend it to a family with younger kids, maybe a young professional couple or grown up teenagers. The location is great and that will always ensure customers/tourist visit but never eating there or taking anyone there.I will rather go to Swiss chalet better to eat where am treated well than where Im tolerated! I only wanted somewhere different and was willing to try out wooden . I still blame myself for not walking away that moment! Kid-friendliness: The waiter, came to speak to me in a very loud voice about my kids.I had to immediately remind him,it is my first time Herr and I only came because of the review that it is kids friendly. It was supposed to be a birthday dinner for the family but we were not rewated well at all.
The manager at the Wooden Monkey is excellent - she gets it. I hope I dont get this wrong, but I recall her name to be Hanna. There were six of us and we needed a meeting place in the afternoon. Hanna must have sensed our desperation, because she gladly helped us out. We racked up a decent bill for the afternoon, so it was a good business decision, but she was so friendly and accommodating along the way. I will always associate a good feeling with The Wooden Monkey, all because of Hanna and her intuition. Well done and thank you!
Yum. Great food and service here.
This place was recommended to us by a local in Mahone Bay so we thought wed try it out. It was quite busy on a Wednesday evening, yet felt relaxed with a nice, cosy atmosphere. We liked the choices on the menu and both had a good meals.
Myself and three friends had dinner here on a business trip one Sunday night. The food was good but the service was terrible. We all liked our meals, but had to wait forever to be served. Some people arrived after us, were finished and their tables cleared before we even got served. An hour after ordering the manager comes to tell one of our party their order was not available. We then had to wait even longer so his meal was ready at the same time as the rest of us. We would not come back knowing it would take two hours for dinner.
Farm to table restaurant. Perfect sized menu that let the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves.
Feel like I m back in England in a traditional pub with not a million tv s everywhere! Food options for gluten and dairy free make me feel welcomed as well .wow!!!
Dude I asked for a sangria and mans came out with a can of blue lobster. Was looking forward to a sangria.
A must dine in Halifax!
Excellent welcome and service in a warm atmosphere. The coconut milk chowder with extra scallops was delicious. The waitress was really attentive.
Great food, decent service, atmosphere could be a bit elevated.
Stopped in mid-day and the scallops and red pepper dip were delicious. Good service too!
This spot is a gem. Cozy, warm atmosphere. Great, personable service. Amazing drink/beer selection. Food was fresh and flavourful. Doing their part to support local. Do yourself a favour and drop by.
We dropped into WM recently and it was a great experience. We managed to sneak in a beautiful lunch this week with some family that were visiting and it was a hit. The service was responsive and staff knowledgeable. The food specials were perfect and the rotating tap was Tanner & Co s West Coast IPA. The brews from this brewery are always exceptional but not super visible in Halifax. Really nice to see an establishment supporting both local farmers and NS breweries. Kid-friendliness: The servers had a placemat activity, crayons and lunch specials ready to go. They were also patient! Our twins are practicing ordering their own meals. Thank you!
I was just going to say ditto to Eli who wrote a review 2 months before me. This is a great place for people with celiacs. I just like the food and atmosphere. Comfy cozy place, good food, great for vegetarians and vegans as well. Can t tell if ou price. We are still eating.
It was a bit disappointing. The donair plate was ok tasting and small. But the braised beef looked very good.
It was literally so good I ate every single part left on the plate. As a vegetarian this was my favorite meal in Halifax. Vegetarian options: I had the vegetarian rice bowl with tofu. Literally the best meal I had in 1-2 weeks in Halifax.
Its a nice place, and the servers are wonderful. But in all honesty food isnt the best. I had the beef dish with sweet potatoes. Some of the beef pieces were so chewy and hard that I couldnt even finish it. Portion sizes are very small. My 4 year old needed another snack after he had the kids pizza dinner. Not worth the price charged.
Im vegetarian and the seitan donair was great!
The food was fabulous, the flavor made me want to order a second helping . I had their Scallop pasta. The service was second to none. Quick friendly and informative all in the confines of a big Smile. Enjoyed our first of many visits to come . Thank you for the memory of great food service and taste.
Very friendly atmosphere, very friendly staff, excellent food! Can highly recommend the wonderful cajun haddock! Especially, with the crispy baked sweet potatoes. Food
We dropped in and some of us had coffee and some had beer. Both were great. The staff was attentive and friendly.
Service was quick, we were in and out in under an hour (we had a show to go to). The food was great just wished there was a little bit more of a helping of pasta.
Here for beer the other day. Decent place, good ambience and service.
Delicious food and our server Ella was lovely - excellent gluten free/vegan options :)
Dietary restrictions: Tree nut and peanut accommodating Kid-friendliness: Good menu for kids Food : 5/5 |
Our server was very nice! The food was quite good and well cooked. The mashed potatoes were marvellous. The portion sizes were small, but this is the only place I know to purchase a vegan donair. It was also accommodating to peanut and sesame allergies.
Sarah was delightful & the vegan Donair was excellent! We will be back!
With the standard in Halifax, the food quality in this restaurant is very poor.
The food is so delicious, with lots of options and gluten-free options . Beautiful rustic dining and lovely service
My family of four thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The Wooden Monkey. I am GF so our options are often limited. There were many options for me on this menu. Everything is so fresh and delicious. You can tell that everything is selected and prepared with care. We all had something different from the menu and each meal was SO good. We were all so full but all ordered dessert to go. When we did get to eat them they were also all so delicious as well as prepared from scratch. We had also arrived shortly before their closing time without realizing it, but you wouldnt have known it. They took great care of us even at the end of what Im sure would have been a busy day for them. Thank you again E.for looking out for me :) And for anyone considering eating here, dont wait, go, youll be happy you did!
The best mushroom ravioli-
Food was amazing with great options for vegetarians, picky kids, and lovers of seafood and other meats. 3 generations are together for a meal that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Kids polished up every scrap and wanted more (this is very rare for us). Wait staff was super personable and attentive. Atmosphere was welcoming and casual but still very nice and quality. Love this place and well be back next time were in Halifax for sure.
Overall, good experience. Ordered mushroom soup, fish and wedges. The potatoes were a bit dry but rest was alright!
Spent a lovely evening here enjoying superb service and wonderful hospitality. Had the Digby scallops appetizer, the burger and the chicken pita. Delish!! Accompanied the meal with the Founders red wine which surprised me, it was so delicious. Capped the meal off with a Cabot Trail coffee which you absolutely must order. Service was friendly and timely a lovely young server who was helpful and knowledgeable about their local sources. For sure, you must try the Wooden Monkey most def one of the best mid-priced restaurants in downtown Halifax.
This was one of the best meals weve had in Halifax, every single thing was so so good! The highlights were the Days Special Sweet Potato Goat Cheese Lasagna and the Caramelized Onion Dip. So much flavor and the portions were just right. Lily was our server and she was fantastic, making the whole experience exponentially better.
Ate here 3 weeks ago I m still so shocked at what happened that I decided to leave a review. Had the soup of the day (mushroom soup) was decent bill was $10 I paid with a $20 note and the waiter asked me if I wanted the change. Now this was one of the most shocking things someone has said to me while on a restaurant. I know it s normal to tip 10-20% in North America but this dude was expecting me to pay double (100% tip) which felt like q robbery attempt. Now I don t know why anyone would do that unless 1. Service very outstanding (which it wasn t) or 2. I m so rich that I have unlimited money to throw away. I m so glad I m from Europe and we don t behave this weird. I always have this problem in Canada expecting tips in a very forcing way. Ofc I got my $10 change and left the restaurant very shocked at how they could try to rob me like that. Other things to note. The mushroom cream as it was advertised wasn t a mushroom cream it was a mushroom soup with visible pieces of mushroom. The kitchen lacks a blender or the cook don t know what a cream is so misleading advertising. The restaurant was super cold like being in the Antarctic. It s a sales technique employed by many restaurants to keep ac super cold Because when people are cold they tend to eat more, hence more money for the restaurant
My husband and I had great vegan donair here! Highly recommend for anyone who is vegan and would like to try the dish. They use seitan as the protein and coconut milk for the sauce - super tasty! Would definitely come back again. Our only issue was that it got super noisy in the restaurant and it was hard to hear each other talk at one point, but there was a large party behind us who were just naturally loud but didn t take away from how good the food was. Dietary restrictions: Great vegan options here!
Update 2024: We were lucky enough to visit this wonderful location again. And no surprise - we had a complete revival of last years experience :-) So once again, many, many thanks for your hospitality, the absolutely delicious food and the great drinks! We just enjoyed a wonderful evening at this absolutely special spot and want to thank the entire team and especially Hannah, who took care of us and made the time an unforgettable event! The delicious food - we had the Nova Scotia salmon and the cajun haddock followed by the maple cinnamon creme brulee and a piece of a blueberry tarte - was accompanied by a tasty local pino grigio. And an incredible margarita made the start to all of this! So thanks again, Hannah, and all the other wonderful people for your hospitality! And thanks to Lil and Christine, we do like your idea and philosophy behind the Wooden Monkey and wish you satisfied guests all the time! And: for the first time in my life I was asked about possible food allergies during taking the order - incredible!
You got to love these people, this is probably among the more friendlier staff. I have experienced in Halifax. Great service great food and absolute lovely place to come with your friends for a chill evening or a rainy day ha ha
Waiting outside in the heat and no service so I left before I had heat stroke plus the guy sitting next to me was so loud I went on the hunt for a different patio to spend my money.
If your looking for great local food made 100% from local products and from local farms this is the location. Great music friendly staff and great prices
Food is generally quite good here and this time was no exception, however it wasnt 5 star food - just good food
My family and I came for dinner and enjoyed everything! My dad has celiac, and they have so many options that are GF or could be made GF. We had bacon wrapped scallops, jerk chicken risotto, seafood pasta and braised beef with the vegan chocolate cake for desert and it was fabulous! Our server Sarah was so attentive, kind and really seemed to care about our experience. Overall, 10/10.
The food, the service and the area were fantastic. I have a anaphylactic allergy to seafood and they went out of their way to accommodate me. Highly recommend this restaurant. Dietary restrictions: I have a seafood allergy and they were able to accommodate me.
Amazing food. Great service and atmosphere. Delicious .
Ended up here for dinner with my family. They have great kids options, inclusive of a placemat to colour on, which kept my 4 year old happy. The service was quick and friendly. I had the scallop pasta was which very tasty! The scallops were cooked perfectly. I appreciated that the kids food came with some apple slices as well. Only complaint was that I ordered an Arnold Palmer to drink and for the amount I paid, I got very little volume of liquid. I could have drunk the whole thing in a couple of gulps.
We had guests in from out of town and they loved this place so much we came twice in three days. We absolutely devoured everything on our plates both times! Theyre also very accommodating to those with dietary restrictions. I cant recommend this place highly enough!
Had a great quick lunch here, some haddock and roasties. Service was great and the sun was shining on the patio!
Blah blah blah Liberal food ideas Nah, this was a life changing experience, and the most delicious meal Ive had in a while. The food conscious approach is beyond sophisticated and the food itself is to die for. Food
The bacon wrapped scallops were perfectly cooked and the reduction sauce is amazing. The Monkey Club and Fish plates were delish and to finish, the cheesecake was divine. Great service and awesome food! Parking: Immediately across the street there is paid parking that is east to access.
This was a nice meal and setting for 7 of us. I went with the pasta of the day, linguine and haddock, and it was tasty and seasoned great. Service was great too.
Ive been a big fan of The Wooden Monkey ever since moving to NS a few years ago, and my favourite has always been the Korean Tacos. Tonight I had my family from the Toronto area visiting and my mom really wanted to go to the one in Halifax, so we booked a reservation for 1930hrs, arrived a few minutes early and were given the option of two very different tables upstairs, which I loved. The service we got from Makenna was exactly how I used to serve, which I had high standards for, so it appreciates a shout out! She got to us to ask for drinks in an appropriate time given how packed the place was, drinks were fast, samples of the Galaxy and Deception Bay were given for the IPA lover, food came appropriately quickly, food runners were working together seemingly seamlessly. Really, really fantastic to see! It gave me a sense that even in a stressful time, the team had eachothers backs and really made the most of the experience of dining in a restaurant, if that makes sense. I really want to stress that the team did a fantastic job at working together. It was visibly noticeable to someone who has previously worked in the industry for over 10+ years. Managers, please give Makenna, the bussers and food runners, the chefs, the bartenders, and the hostess a big thank you from us. Really fantastic work, and honestly it makes me miss waitressing when I see a group come together like yours did tonight. Oh, and the food was so good I was full and still wanted to finish my lamb ravioli! Vegetarian options: A very good variety! Dietary restrictions: TONS of options. And, if something doesnt seem viable, they seem to care and try to accommodate when appropriate and capable.
I had blueberry pie ice cream and lamb risotto lovely. 2 craft beer from propeller #Galaxy she had the black and paddock also lovely and a crème brûlée and numerous glasses of white wine. Alex waited on us. He s a professional. Thank you for the Whole Foods Food
Parking: With its location being right downtown, parking is whatever & wherever you can find it Kid-friendliness: While not gear towards families, it does have a warm atmosphere. The menu is great, but may not appeal to children. They may not be able to serve minors after 9pm depending on their licensing. Wheelchair accessibility: Entrance at ground level, with some seating on main floor
Food and service was excellent! Had the scallops pasta and the cheese cake for dessert, both at the recommendation of our waitress Lili Food : 5/5
Scallop Pasta was the best. Supports local farms and suppliers and was a wonderful experience. Our server was top notch!
The food tasted like frozen meals, which was disappointing. On the upside, the drinks were good. The service was okay.
I had the lamb burger with goat cheese and wedges on the side (they call em by another name, but I cant remember). That was the second best burger Ive ever had in my life! The wedges were so uniquely seasoned, too. Portion sizes are sufficient as well! I left comfortably full. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well! Next time I come to Halifax Ill be visiting here again!
Too bad we don t have time to eat dinner here, but the nachos are good and i love how they ask if we have food allergies,
Yummy fish cakes and great atmosphere. Vegetarian options: Lots of options. They pride themselves on this. Dietary restrictions: Los of options. They pride themselves on this, too! Parking: Parade nearby.
Served a raw hamburger to my child aa takeout. The club is old dry turkey on a hamburger bun. Maybe its good when you eat in, take out is total garbage
The service was good but the beer was flat and the nachos were skimpy and cheese was a little burnt the nachos are definitely not worth $20
Family and I had a lovely time.
The best restaurant Ive ever been to! It was a few years ago but I still have great memories of it, especially of their hamburger and apple pie.
Great environment and food. Their locally sourced ingredients indeed escalate the taste and flavours. One of the best vegan restaurants I have tried so far in Canada. I visited it almost everyday for lunch on my trip there, but never did it get boring. Highly recommend this place for vegans and vegetarians.
Great vegan options, appetizers, mains, and desserts. Comfortable atmosphere, recommend it.
Excellent food! Well priced for the area. I would recommend the glazed salmon, and also the scallop fettucine is an excellent choice aswell! Food : 5/5
Cute place, great service, delicious food, good alcohol selection
Great place to relax, and enjoy the great food.
The Wooden Monkey was recommended by my friends living here, they certainly cater to a number of dietary restrictions which are very helpful and they have great food. I cant describe each dish, but there were no cons, everything was well seasoned, the crust on scallops and salmon were to perfection, mussels were delicious not the best we had but very good, and starches had good flavours. I cant say anything was too special or unique but for a farm to table experience that catered to some restrictions, it was tasty.
Wonderful service and great food!
The food was average though catering to a lot of dietary requirements but bland...had the lamb ravioli and scallop pasta the mussels and breshetta were OK though and the chickpea salad was nice, I would have complained about the portions but to be honest I was glad to finish my food early, what I dint like about the service is that there was alot of room in the restaurant and the server kept coming and asking if wed want the bill that was irksome, it would have been OK if there were lines of customers waiting to be served but that was just...plus the atmosphere was too loud...
Always great food and service here. My first time at the Halifax location. Same great variety of field to table options and for different dietary restrictions.
My wife and I were in Halifax to celebrate our birthdays and had supper here. The young man that waited on us was very attentive and gave us a great review of the menu. we both went with he Hamburger and roasted potatoes, It was very good and and we will come back to try another entree at a later date.
Went there for linch on a weekend with friends. The food was served quickly the service was friendly and the tacos delicious.
Always a positive experience - great morals and great food. Doesnt get any better.
I got the lamb burger with goat cheese and chickpea salad. It was so delicious! The others in my party also enjoyed their food. Salmon with roasties and braised beef. Dessert was also delicious. I had the creme Brule.
Had great service, great beer and great food. Everything was perfect even during a packed new years eve. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian special for new years was a cheese tortellini and was fantastic.
Cosy atmosphere, delicious food, excellent service - a favourite!
Honestly not a great experience. Our server was either stoned or just bad at his job. I had the salmon, she had the chicken bacon penne. The salmon was okay but i was honestly more pleased by the potatoes which is sad. The penne was about as bland as it gets. I expected much better for the price. Really nice atmosphere for a date, but not somewheres id ever go back to or recommend.
Excellent
High quality food, delectable dishes. Good service. Lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Might even be the restaurant with the most number of vegan options in the city. Locally sourced ingredients and small business owner. Love their story. One of my favorite places in Halifax to eat out. Vegetarian options: Lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Might even be the restaurant with the most number of vegan options in the city.
Our server was very nice, but the overall experience wasn t great. The food was very bland (all three meals we ordered) and our order took beyond what I feel is acceptable to be served.
Fantastic service. Very allergy/intolerance-aware. Lots of locally sourced products. Highly recommend. Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free, onion allergy, garlic allergy, list of ingredients, list of option for each allergy.
Atmosphere and Friendliness-5/5 Service-5/5 Food Taste-4/5 Cost-4/5
I love the Woden Monkey. Ive tried different food there but the last time I was there I had the seafood chowder and it was very different from the seafood chowder Ive had anywhere else. It was tomato based and even though thats usually not my thing I really enjoyed it. The focaccia bread that came with the chowder was sooooo good. I wanted to ask for more I also tried their famous chocolate tofu cake and it was creamy and delicious. The only downside was that the service was a bit slow but for a Saturday evening I guess that is expected.
Mutz nuts off a pub
Amazing food! Our server Andrea was so nice and polite!! Highly recommended!
Attended here for a work lunch gathering a few weeks back. This was my first and likely my last visit. Our server was very friendly and attentive, the bright spot to my experience. I ordered the Monkey Club with roasties as the side. The sandwich was underwhelming for taste and the bun it was served on was dry and crumbled in your hands. The roasties, which are their oven baked potato wedges, were nothing to write home about. This wasnt the worst dining experience Ive had, but it was far from memorable in a positive way. The product did not match up with the price and therefore I could not recommend it. I imagine it does well based on its convenient location and its accommodation to different dietary needs. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free and vegetarian options available
Quaint, vibrant, friendly. Attentive staff. My meal selection was tasty but not as hot as Id expect my pasta to be when it arrives at my table. I should have told the server, but didnt. Ill try again
Dietary restrictions: Gave details of ingredients. Recommended dishes
Never been disappointed by a meal here. They take there time and you can tell by the taste.
One of my all-time favorite restaurants! Finding great vegetarian options is difficult, but I adore every single thing Ive tried here (including pre-vegetarian). Has been a fave for a good 8 years now!
The food was not very seasoned, the food was still good tho. The staff was really nice and the place was cleaned.
awesome staff and food
My friend worked their (Lokesh)he suggested me to have food their and i went with my friends food was really delicious , awesome staff and quick service.
Its a normal bar at best! And the staff was not well behaved the time we were there.
Good place to spend time
Service and food were great! I love that they source most of their ingredients locally. I had the chickpea salad and lamb ravioli. Both were amazing and will definitely be coming back for more.
I have not dined @ Wooden Monkey since recent renovations. But, what I can tell you, is that I am still perplexed by how AMAZING their tofu chocolate cheesecake is. I dined based on my waitresses recommendations. The front of house staff know the menu well. As a tofu hater, I was doubtful I would enjoy this particular recommendation. Years later, I still think about it.
Teetering on 3.5 and 4 stars. The service was exceptional! Our server was timely, attentive, helpful and very friendly. The food was tasty but not justified for the total cost. I appreciated the clearly marked vegan options and having an option between a few of them. Yet for 2/3 of a price we ve had a more filling and flavourful meal at the nearby Harvest. We ordered the lentil burger, Korean tacos with tofu and the seitan donair + drinks and the tofu chocolate pie. I think Wooden Monkey nailed it with the service and the ambiance, those are 5/5. But for the cost/flavour ration it feels a bit overpriced, I m sorry to say. I might come back for a drink in the evening to take in the atmosphere, as opposed to another meal.
I love that all of their suppliers are local, theyre even listed on a board in the dining room. Food was delicious and service was quick
Servers were great, food was ok. Its a bit run down, with broken dishwasher parts and other clutter all over the place upstairs.
Had the jerk chicken risotto, I don t normally get risotto when I eat out but this one was quite good. Solid beer list and the blueberry martini was one of the better cocktails I ve had in my life. Nice location too.
Cool interior The korean tacos (sub tofu) were good. Flavor was great. Could use more greens on top to fill them out. Seitan donair was decent. Meat could have a bit more spice. Chicken sandwhich on pita was really dry.
4.5, good spot. Friendly staff. Working hard. Food was pretty good. Wouldn t order the jerk chicken again.
I got chickpea salad and I asked for chicken.... salad tested amazing but, chicken was plain not flavor when I mixed with the salad got little better. On the other hand my partner had fish tacos and that was AMAZING!!!! we order more lol. Local drinks and nice neighborhood atmosphere;they supportlocal farmers which is nice. The server was very nice and professional
We enjoyed our dinner. We didnt have a reservation but they accommodated us. The food and service was very good.
Amazing food. Everything was delicious. Locally sourced ethical foods. Highly recommend
The food is great! And the drink menu is expansive. The price for their supper menu is a bit higher but not too bad for downtown halifax. They have good gluten free options as well. Their nachos (which I have several pictures of) are fantastic! I tried the lamb burger and it was good but I feel like the goat cheese overpowered the taste of the lamb burger. Their roasties are phenomenal however Dietary restrictions: Good gluten free options
Amazing and incredible. Best food in the city.
Amazing food! I love the Philosophy. Would go again.
Excellent food, excellent service, fun atmosphere, so appreciate the variety of gluten and dairy free options. Will definitely have one last meal here before heading home. Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten free, dairy free and vegan options
Lovely building and atmosphere. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. Tasty vegan donair and garlic fingers!
an OK place for meeting your friends
Had a small large salad. Was tasty, but the quantity for a large salad was not there. Food
Went with a friend and her family to have a shared birthday dinner.
Love this spot - great food and great vibes! Also bonus they are very gluten conscious Food : 5/5
Warm and friendly service. Excellent food too
Great food, service, location, atmosphere. Was recommended by a local and lived up to expectations.
The food we had here was top notch. We originally chose to come here because of the wide variety gluten free options. They went above and beyond our expectations. We were even more impressed when we discovered all the dessert items were gluten free. Im convinced no matter what you choose on the menu, you wont be disappointed. Dietary restrictions: Many items on the menu are naturally gluten free or can easily be made gluten free. They know what theyre doing and I was confident everything I ate was gluten free.
Disappointed, again. This is the second and last time I ll eat here, The food does not ring true to their mission statement of being locally sourced. It was bland and uninteresting, the ingredients were clearly not in house made and tasted like it came from a can. I had the eggplant parmigiana which was basically a piece grocery store eggplant roasted with cheese on top.. I don t feel good about this review, and the food also made me feel sick. The staff was delightful and I found that made the experience better. Thanks Vegetarian options: I m glad this restaurant offers veg options and it s why I gave it a second try.
I was hungry after work and there were lots of people around because of the NAIG happening. I ate inside but there was a table next to me that was very loud and noisy. There was also a table of kids. I had to wear my earbuds and play music and eat but it still was noisy. The Korean pork tacos were excellent but a little messy. The cocktails Id had before and were refreshing. Loved the chocolate tofu pie and was pretty full after.
Tofu cake dessert was amazing
This was a memorable and exceptional dining experience during our stay in Halifax. The food is incredibly delicious and fresh, each dish was presented so appetizingly. I do not have food allergies, but my son does, and he has never been able to eat in a restaurant due to his multiple and severe life threatening allergies, however this restaurant changed all that! The assistant manager Emily went out of her way to accommodate the menu so my son could enjoy many of the meals. She printed out his own personal menu where she circled and highlighted the dishes he could eat, I was so touched by her kindness. Anyone who has severe food restrictions knows that safety is the most important thing, and the servers and chef went above and beyond to make everything safe for him. My family had dinner there every night right up to the last night we departed for Toronto. My son turned sixteen that week, and he told me that this was the best present ever, to feel so included and taken care of, and he loved the food. The servers are so friendly, but most importantly, very educated when it comes to food allergies and restrictions. Their communication skills were excellent when it came to understanding my sons specific dietary needs and relaying this back to the chef. I highly recommend The Wooden Monkey on Grafton Street! You truly are the best!
Tne food was excellent and the service even better.
Great food, easy to choose gluten free options. Nice to be able to see where the local food comes from
The best place in Halifax to est salmon! Dietary restrictions: Vegan and vegetarian friendly Food : 5/5 |
Vegan and vegetarian options in downtown Halifax!
A Halifax tradition that has slipped a bit in the last decade. Prices go up, quality goes down. That being said it is still a quality restaurant with lots of good menu options for a variety of tastes. Service is always slow (not enough servers for the busy times). Worth a visit.
We had a very nice experience here! The waitress was very accommodating with my order, as I wanted a salad and salmon, and she offered me the combo so I could have both. The salmon was delicious and perfectly cooked. The caser kale salad was tasty and well dressed. Prices were good as well.
The food was very tasty and the service was great too. It was a bit loud, but otherwise great!
Absolutely delicious food. We had the bacon wrapped scallops, bruschetta bread. Followed by the chicken club and lamb ravioli. The service was exceptional even though the place was busy as could be. Both front of the house and back of the house staff rocked it. They absolutely worked together as a team and killed it! Love how its all locally sourced food and many different dietary options for various types of food issues.
The concept of the restaurant is original, the dishes are varied, the service is fast
I had an excellent seitan donair and split the chocolate tofu pie. Yum. Dietary restrictions: They asked about dietary requirements and allergies. Food : 5/5 |
The Wooden Monkey is a staple in downtown Halifax. Centrally located with delicious food. Today I had the rice bowl which was better than expected. Wooden Monkey is also quite affordable. Vegetarian options: There were a lot of vegetarian options and every option is marked clearly regarding gluten, vegetarian, dairy, etc. One of the easier menus Ive read to understand ingredients, etc.
i didnt go but i love name
Nice and see spacious
The bruschetta was very generous and extremely tasty as the appetizer. For the lunch entree the chicken club variation was extremely tasteful, with the bacon being particularly noteworthy. Great atmosphere with friendly and knowledgeable wait staff.
This is our favourite restaurant in Halifax! We came here for lunch and dinner, the pizza is the best the family has ever had and they ve had a lot of pizza just saying. Drinks are unique and delicious (Curious George for kids).
Lovely restaurant in downtown Halifax that supports local Nova Scotia farms with an emphasis on sustainability. Plenty of vegan options, which are clearly marked on the menu. The seitan donair is delicious and filling.
Excellent experience. The menu is well varied and very suitable for all types of dietary restrictions (in our case we were looking for gluten-free and dairy-free options). The service is cordial and fast in an enchanting setting. I recommend and keep this address for my future visits to Halifax. Dietary restrictions: Gluten and dairy free
The menu was promising. The actual dishes left a bit to be desired. Most of my salmon plate was unseasoned. Some of the potato roasties werent cooked all the way through. Service was a bit slow and patio tables werent clean.
Thank you especially to Jean-Mari for her knowledgeable suggestions! A wonderful experience all-around! Do try the Grand Pre Tidal Bay! It is surprising, refreshing, bold, and unique! Vegetarian options: There are salads and a daily vegetarian creation.
Excellent Restaurant with Gluten Free Menu Options
Super friendly staff, great service! We ordered the lamb burgers and they were delicious. We were lucky enough to watch a firework show on the water while eating on the patio which made our dinner out that much more special!
Wonderful spot for lunch. There werent a tonne of vegan options but there was enough to satisfy and the taste was amazing! I had the veggie pizza with vegan cheese and donair seitan and I couldnt stop until it was gone. Then the chocolate tofu dessert was just as good. Highly recommend! Vegetarian options: A few vegan options but what they lack in selection, they make up for in quality. So good!
More than a third of the menu suits vegan eating and they are happy to make changes. Delightful atmosphere, though a little challenging for accessibility if you are eating inside, there are three small steps you must traverse. Service was excellent and knowledgeable, and the food delicious. I had the bruschetta and the beet salad, and my wife had the veggie pizza with the seitan donair. Portions are good sized, flavour on point and so fresh. We finished with the tofu chocolate torte which was simply divine. Add to all of that the focus on supporting local farmers and you cant go wrong. Highly, highly recommend. Vegetarian options: All dishes are clearly marked vegan or vegan option, if they contain dairy, gluten or nuts. Excellent for specific dietary needs and they actively ask if there are needs they should accommodate for you. Dietary restrictions: All dishes are clearly marked vegan or vegan option, if they contain dairy, gluten or nuts. Such a wonderful place and cause to support. I really like their ethos of supporting local farmers. Their vegan options are great - especially the vegan tacos and the tofu chocolate pie! Our server was really friendly and overall was a great vibe.
Great spot with good food options. The service was really quick and it was exceptional. I heard that it wasn t overrated at first but I did not feel that at all. Only thing I would say is that it is a bit on the over priced side but aside from that, it was great. I ordered the scallops with fettuccine and it was real big scallops seared perfectly.
This was the second worst food experience Ive had in HMR. I visited the Dartmouth location once previously and loved the nachos and bruchetta. I ordered the bruchetta again today and still loved it (5/5!!!). Today, I ordered the chickpea salad and my partner had the bacon cheese burger. The burger was dry, and the chickpea salad was just awful. It didnt come with some of the ingredients that it said it would on the menu, and the rice was cold (not clear from the menu), dry and bland. I feel like it would have been so much better if the chickpeas and rice would have been hot and served on lettuce. Im super disappointed because our previous experience in Dartmouth was awesome and this one was such a let down. Also, the waiter (male), asked my partner (male) if he was ready for the bill. Ive never had that experience before - servers usually ask the TABLE if theyre ready for the bill, not assume the man will pay... It was weird (I was holding my wallet too). It was so expensive (spent over $60 for the burger, salad and bruchetta). Will be back to the Dartmouth location for the bruchetta but not down to try anything else.
Really good if you are big into buying local foods. Always has a couple vegan options but its big thing seems to be local.
We had a very pleasant time here. I had the bacon cheeseburger (didn t take a photo) and my mom had the haddock. We both loved the food. I could taste the caramelised onions, smoky bacon, and mushrooms in the burger - such good flavour. The restaurant was so cozy and we had a nice view of the ferry, water and sunset. Although we very much enjoyed our food, we loved how friendly and attentive our server was. She was absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much.
2.5 star, 4 of us and all hungry and we needed to eat. 2 out of 4 meals were great. But my meal was jerk chicken on balsamic rice for $27. It comes out a pill of balsamic rice, with a small chicken drumstick and this was $27 bucks. I should have just sent it back, but I needed to eat. The wait staff were good, and the restaurant has a good atmosphere. And I would go back and try the place again.
the best veggie burger Ive ever had - the lentil burger is both full and crispy, sweet and flavourful Id recommend getting some starters if youre very hungry, since we waited quite a bit, but it was totally worth it :) Vegetarian options: there were a few good options - very focused and great quality, we had both the lentil burger and the daily veggie special
Delicious locally sourced food at a reasonable price.
The food at the Wooden Monkey is always amazing. I highly recommend the lamb ravioli. So good but very rich.
Just a great place to eat, yummy food. Had my first donair ever (vegan) and the best chickpea salad ever.
What a perfect find during our visit to Halifax. The menu had a broad range of choices that satisfied all in our party. Dietary restrictions: Excellent options for the gluten free member of our party
Ahhhhmazing!
Steamed mussels were exactly what you want them to be. The bacon wrapped scallops we also very good. They have a good selection of gluten-free option as well.
Why does this have to be in Halifax and I live in the state. Such a great restaurant with a great story and mission. So many beers, so many local options, so many delicious food choices.
Everything was delicious! And what a joy to have several vegetarian options!! Really a great address Vegetarian options: Many vegetarian dishes and vegan options
I was recommended to try your restaurant by a fellow co-worker, and you did not disappoint! The food was amazing, and your story and beliefs of supporting local growers could not ring more true. You are truly living by your beliefs. I strongly recommend the bacon wrapped scallops and the Salmon dinner! I will be back and recommend you restaurant to anyone visiting Halifax!
I had the Chocolate Tofu pie 13 years ago the first time I came to Halifax and its still just as amazing as I remembered!!! (Actually I forgot just how good it was!!!) I love that its gluten and dairy free! Its so good people without intolerances will love it just as much, finally a dessert that doesnt comprise on taste to be DF/GF!!! Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options available. Dietary restrictions: Good options for Gluten Free and Dairy Free dining. Something for everyone!
I love restaurants that focus on local foods and community. The atmosphere inside was really warm and welcoming, perfect for chatting with friends. The food portions are perfectly sized, didnt feel hungry but wasnt overstuffed. I really liked the vegetarian special, which was a curry. The blueberry pie dessert was my favourite dish!
First time visiting the Halifax location and took my mom for her birthday after a Broadway Show. We both really loved the atmosphere, service and food. Defiantly going back soon!
Only problem is the way
