Saint James in Hamilton

I want to start off by saying the food there is delicious. This is our second time going...however I noticed something quite peculiar. The last time my husband and I went there to have brunch as per usual you order your food at the front and then you go akd sit down. Except we ordered our food and paid at the front. We noticed 2 couples that ordered their food at the front, got their order and ate and then paid at the end. So I asked who I thought was their manager what their policy was in terms of paying for your food and she said typically you pay after order. Does their policy only apply to certain people? Idk it didnt sit well with me..but its their establishment and they can operate however they want even if their patrons are excluded from fair treatment.

Was our breakfast stop on Monday morning and it was a great choice. Friendly atmosphere, good food, portions were bigger than we expected and it was a good surprise. Coffe is great. Wish they had more tables and space. Also better to ask them about the dish, as some descriptions doesnt say that it is spicy, which would be frustrating for someone who can not tolerate peppers. Overall great experience.

Stopped in for breakfast after missing my train. Ive never been so grateful to be late. The home fries can only be described as life changing. Honestly one of the very best breakfasts I have had at any price. I recommend you walk 10 minutes from West Harbour. Therell be other trains.

There is something about their breakfast sandwiches that tastes so much better than any fast food restaurant and the coffee is great! Love this little place. $20 for a very nice breakfast.

Located in a rough area of Hamilton. They have codes on bathrooms due to non-customers coming in to use. Tables, front doors, etc. were all sticky. While food was tasty and great deals, leaves you wondering due to cleanliness.

Love the cool laid back vibe at St James and the owner and staff are so kind. I had the features seasonal short stack with apple and an excellent cortado. Recommended!

This place has great food and coffee, but it is very tiny. If you are meeting more than two people and don t get the one big table it can be very squishy. They do a great job of managing their guests, and the food is wonderful, it is just tiny.

Unreal breakfast! Potatoes, crepes, eggs, bread....I just wish I had enough room for the baking!!! Just go and see

Fantastic breakfast - we were a group of three, we had the old fashioned, the mushroom toast, and the peachy stack. All the food was fantastic, the coffee was strong and well made. Mushroom toast was a stand out, the bread overall is very good - not too crisp, not too soft, toasted perfectly. The pancakes were amazing and the sausage and hashbrowns were excellent. The hashbrowns might be the best Ive ever had - smashed, crispy and well seasoned. The service was pretty fast but just really nice. Lots of uber orders coming and going, super friendly staff and they knew what they were doing. Washrooms were spectacularly clean. The only suggestion I have is for the staff to check if the coffee is for inside or to go, as they defaulted to to go cups when we were in the restaurant. Otherwise, a fantastic spot for Tgiving breakfast on a rainy Sunday morning.

We went in for breakfast on Aug 25. We ordered and paid and sat at a table inside. We waited about 15mins and a table opened up on the patio. We asked one of the servers if we could switch spots and they accommodated us. After about 35mins I went inside to mention that we didn t get a number for our table and the server at the counter confirmed that we were the 2 ppl that moved tables. After 45mins we had to leave to catch a train. The counter person was apologetic and said they essentially lost our order. I said that s too bad but would need a refund. They did confirm that I received my coffee at least but I was surprised that they didn t refund my full amount and decided to keep my tip that I had to pay for prior to getting service. Overall it wasn t a good experience which is disappointing as the food that was being served around us looked fantastic.

Saint James is one of those places where the menu is small but it is perfected! We ordered English muffins and The Golden Oldie with Matcha and Mocha. The food and the drinks were delicious and the service was great. I especially loved how crispy the home fries and hash browns were.

30 minutes for salad?! When we got there the staff members were friendly. We ordered at the counter like we were supposed to and had to put in a tip before we even got our food. I put 15% tip thinking I could put cash down at the end of our meal (typically I tip 18-20). We waited 30 minutes for our food (I only know this becauseo we were checking our parking metre). When we got our food I had to go back to the counter to ask for cutlery and water (since we finished our coffees). We eventually got both with no oops or apology. Food was ok. Definitely not worth the wait. We got a burger and a salad so I m not sure why we had to wait so long (and it wasn t rammed or anything). I don t know if the 15% tip is why it took so long or if this was typical. I will not come here again since the food was not worth the inattentive service .

Ive been going to Saint James for many years, and its only gotten better with time! Cozy spot, big windows and bright atmosphere. Great for meeting up with a friend or a solo date. Tasty food and coffee! They also have a nice patio in the summer. Definitely would recommend!

We had the Gatsby breakfast and a smoked salmon and egg sandwich. It was the most delicious breakfast we have had in a while. Very refreshing!

Walked in as the kitchen was closing on Civic Holiday Monday, the patio was hopping and the tunes were thumping. Great espresso pulled on a La Marzocco machine, the beans looked like a fresh lot of Phil & Sebastian from Alberta. Iced Americano was made with chipped ice, leading to a bit more dilution than ideal, but overall a great experience. Will return!

I thought this place would be a fun place to dine out, but I found the staff to lack smiles and to generally be unfriendly. The service and food was fine but the cold reception was unwelcoming.

Food and coffee are good. But the fried potatoes are too salty. Ideally, it should be very light salt, and customer can add whatever they want. Price is not expensive. The restaurant is clear and cozy.

My salmon toast and matcha latte were delicious! I don t know if maybe I missed some part of the menu but I wasn t able to order pancakes (maybe the item was removed?) overall the service was good and the only negative feedback I would give is that the table was not clean and someone from next table dropped half a water bottle in my shoes (perhaps the tables are too close to each other).

The coffee is one of the best around. The food is simple but delicious and well executed. Its refreshing to see a place that knows how to scramble and not overcook eggs. Ingredients seem fresh. Service is courteous and to the point. Small place so seating can be a challenge. Highly recommended after trying several times myself.

Not welcoming environment

Unfortunately never got to sit in and eat any of their food despite repeat attempts. It seems to be the only place in Hamilton that does not understand the basic concept of holding tables/reservations/taking a name down to ring them back. I was told that if I need a table either I wait 20 mins right there, or go away for 10 mins and come back and then go away again if there s no table. But nobody could guarantee me that since I came first could come back in 20 for said table and probably do something productive in the meantime. Get with the times folks. Yes this is a 5 star review because I can t rate the food without eating it and I m not an a$$h0le.

Food was simple, but tasty. Great place to stop in for breakfast or a simple lunch. We had the brirnand bacon frittata, the burger, matcha latte and caramel latte. Parking can be a challenge, and seating might be difficult since its small space. They dont do reservations. Coffee was so good, we got some to go! Also glad they were open on family day!

I didn t expect the inside from looking at the outside. This is a great breakfast place for business, friends or family. I had the clean poutine and it was excellent.

St James Dîner was absolutely fantastic. Whilst away on a work trip, I noticed this highly rated place near my hotel and had to give it a go. On my first try, which was a weekend, it was absolutely full. I decided to try again on a weekday near opening hours, and it was quite empty. After walking in and self seating, I ordered the Golden Oldie and a cortado. The food was absolutely delicious - soft poached eggs, and the chillies added a nice but light kick. It was enough to fill but not too much to stuff. I would definitely recommend visiting this local restaurant to try their food!

I came on a Fri morn @ 9:15ish and by the time I left the place was already packed. I ordered the Goldie Oldie breakfast and it was delicious, except I unfortunately found a hair in my food I get this happens and doesn t represent the sanitation level of this cafe, however it s still an upset to experience Leaving this post on a positive note - My flat white was one of the best I ve ever had and my server was super friendly and kind

We have visited this restaurant in the past and had positive experience in terms of food and service. But today we had an interesting encounter. We were waiting to be seated and there were around 4 people waiting in front of us. A lady in a green sweater approached us looked at my wife and I blankly and asked if we really want to wait 30mins. We said we don t mind waiting and she didn t seem happy about it. We felt unwelcome and uneasy. Minutes later a Caucasian couple entered the restaurant and her approach with them was 180. We no longer wanted to wait after being treated like that! This is 2023 for god s sake!

The staff was friendly and warm. Best eggs ever! This hands down the best breakfast I have ever had out. To the chef, I sincerely hope that you plan on cooking forever because you are the best, and your cooking actually made my day. The price point is very reasonable, we also took baked goods home with us and they were delicious. The space itself is small, but the vibe is calm and enjoyable.

This just might be my new favourite restaurant. The decor, patio, service, prices, and food are ALL 5 stars! I got the Avocado toast, fries, and salted chocolate chip cookie. I want to go every single day! The Homefries were okay. Theyre a little overcooked and underseasoned.

My first time. What a find! Breakfast was delicious. I had the Malibu. A customer highly recommended the pancake stack served with lemon curd and blueberries. I ate that, too. I will definitely be back. My new breakfast spot. Parking: Limited parking if all the other shops are open.

I ordered a sausage breakfast with smashed taters and an omelette. It was delicious and every one of the proteins was treated beautifully. I found the sausage to be a bit spicy for the morning but I know others enjoy a kick in the AM. Omelette was tender and so were the tots. I noticed that it got very busy toward the end of our meal and service slowed for other customers. Maybe it would be a worthy decision to delegate a little more evenly, I know it s not easy! People want it there and then. Overall a wonderful meal and would return again.

Popped in with my boyfriend this AM for the first time and we are so glad we did! Seriously one of the best breakfasts and americanos I have ever had. Boyfriend had a chai late and it was also A+ (with a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie to go). Great value for excellent quality food. Only thing we regretted was not taking a photo of the amazing food presentation. Stellar service, and welcoming/cozy vibe. We can t wait to be back soon. Quality brunch - I love The Malibu breakfast sandwich. Service is friendly and your food is ready quickly. The only thing I wish was different is that they had a bigger building - it s always packed and hard to get a table. Thankfully during patio season there s a few more tables to go around.

We had pancakes and home fries and a coffee. Food was good, but the plating style made it harder to eat the food. Everything was served in a bowl and thr home fries were such large pieces that you had to cut them but the bowl it was served in made that hard. The staff seemed friendly. The place is smaller and we walked in at the right time to get a table but a line queued up for a little bit. I would definitely recommend getting here early or being prepared to wait for a table.

Looks Goth outside but indoor ambience is airy high ceiling Yuppie vibe. Coffee blend was fruity with slight acrid profile. I prefer dark, nutty or full bodied blends. Limited seating and noisy. No GF options with no apologies forthcoming. Casual DGaF attitude.

First stop on my first day in Hamilton, its a very small restaurant also offering a few tables outside. There isnt much choice on their menu and the dishes are rather light, but its a departure from the traditional lunch menu. Super good and fresh croissant, I really liked my lunch!

I returned to Hamilton after a couple of years away and it was great to find one of our favorite restaurants still serving up great food with great service. Couldnt eat on the patio but we were lucky enough to get a seat inside. This establishment has not only kept their great food quality but it also kept their great prices. I had the breakfast sandwich and my wife had the daily shortstack. Keep up the great work!

This is definitely the best breakfast sandwich in Hamilton. Probably the best in Ontario... maybe the best in Canada? Quick service, quality food, fantastic coffee.

Pleasant vegetarian breakfast including some lentils which was a nice surprise. Now (June 2023) also has outdoor seating as well.

I WISH THERE IS A BONUS STAR OPTION FOR a place that got my heart. This is a small place with amazing food and great coffee. I had the Avocado toast which had the best pesto sauce topping . I absolutely enjoyed me experience here. Only thing is it s a small cafe with limited seating available. Vegetarian options: They have Avocado toast and Mushroom toast . You can opt out of eggs if you may.

A Symphony of Flavors at Saint James! Saint James Cafe served up an excellent array of drinks and dishes. The vanilla latte and iced matcha latte were comforting and refreshing, while the mocha ice tea was a pleasant surprise. The mushroom toast, strawberry orange glaze pancakes, and falafel wrap were each flavorful and beautifully prepared. The café offered a delightful experience in a warm atmosphere. Unfortunately a bad experience, not worth the hype, come if you have 1-2 hours to spare for a breakfast which is basically just an aesthetic sandwich at best ohh btw and after waiting for you food for like 45 min then they will run out of ingredients and replace it for something you might not want but they just gonna let you know and not give u the option if you still want that or not no I will not recommend

A nice set of brunch options and flavours. The stand outs are the featured shortstack for its inventiveness (as they rotate flavours and do a great job of not being too sweet so the flavour can be tasted in each bite). The in house baking is good, the eggs are extremely well done, made light and a joy to eat whether mixed with cheese or a collection of spices and peppers. Nice people, good food, and a place I recommend trying for a brunch if your in the mood. Atmosphere is what it is since its just a chill cafe atmosphere and a nice street side patio but quite utilitarian (only a plant or two).

A very small and inconspicuous shop on the edge of the big street. Super nice service and the toast with avocado was lovingly prepared and delicious. The coffee was also very tasty (with a lot of acidity, if you like that). Very happy to come back when I am in Hamilton again.

Amazing restaurant with incredible food. I watched one guy the kitchen alone put out dozens of plates consistently making some of the best looking breakfast Ive ever seen. My food was incredible. The guy on the other side was alone making the best cappuccino Ive ever had. The ladies up front serving were very nice and helpful. Do not leave Hamilton without eating breakfast here!

I gotta admit! I had the time of my life sitting with my daughter and delightful falafel salad. The food is delicious, fresh and so yummy that its nice when you find a spot that does it right. You can tell there is a love of good food shared by the staff of this small breakfast place on James St. in Hamilton! Raving reviews and Ill definitely be back, time and time again to try everything on the menu !

First off, the breakfast is one of the best i had in a long time, very few restaurants are on my list to eat in Hamilton. Had BBQ Bandits smokehouse yesterday and it was amazing, today me and the wife had breakfast here and were greeted with smiles and amazing food. Cant pick a favorite, but if i had to, it would be the buttrrmilk blueberry pancakes Good Lawd. Thank You as always for making amazing food. Another True Gem of Hamilton.

The vibes were nice and it smelled amazing in there, I ordered the smoked salmon dish and felt that the eggs were under seasoned as it tasted a bit bland. The bread was lovely, as were the pickled onions and the actual smoked salmon! I think if they replaced their sauce with a dill option, the dish would be elevated. Taos Google Restaurant Reviews I came for brunch over the weekend after a long overnight shift and was craving good brunch food. Thankfully, that is exactly what I found at Saint James. We had ordered the blueberry pancakes and the classic breakfast and both were top notch quality. The blueberry pancakes had a very nice sweetness and the sweet cream cheese topping just blew my mind. It was just so good. The classic breakfast sausages were also excellent, had the right amount of saltiness and savoury that hit the right spot. Highly recommend this place. Food: 5/5. Service: 5/5. Saint James is aptly named, located right along James street in the heart of downtown. The interior has a smokey breakfast haze around it, with some limited seating in the front. We dined in, but could ve easily had take out as there was a steady stream of people for both options. The service was excellent, as was the atmosphere (if you re looking for a small urban cafe). But the food, the food was phenomenal. I had the Golden Oldie which featured a fluffy flavourful omelet, smashed potatoes, sausage, and toasted sourdough. Partner had the Malibu sandwich, and both were simply excellent. The price was on par with some other brunch spots, but the food quality certainly sets it apart from the rest.

Cant believe I never wrote a review! Ive been coming here since they first opened. Incredible breakfast food (and back when they had their dinners, omg it was insanely good!!!) and great coffee. My favorite cafe in Hamilton by far.

The breakfast menus is limited but all the items are quite unique and not the typical breakfast menu. The restaurant had limited seating area and it was tight in space. But besides the small space we really enjoyed the unique twist on breakfast.

I had the best blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs. Will go again.

The food at Saint James is always good and the ingredients are always fresh. The menu has decent variety, including some vegetarian options. The price point is on the higher side for what is a typical breakfast/brunch item. The downside to the cafe is the customer service. The few employees I ve interacted with/observed are curt and seem disinterested in their customers.

This quaint little spot has some of the best breakfast Ive had in a while. Its a little spot thats easy to miss. Though the inside is a bit small, its well worth the wait. Great service with amazing food ensures that this is a must try if you find yourself in the Hamilton area.

We spent 50$ on a breakfast that was tiny.. we just left and looking for more food! Definitely not what we were expecting! Nothing special at all We tried to go to motel restaurant but they were fully booked. Tiny spot not worth money on food at all! Food : 2/5

Their croissants sandwich is definitely the best! I didn t like their cooked oatmeal though. I was not worth what I paid for. Their drink menu is good and so their baked goodies. The servers and are friendly. The one thing I didn t appreciate is that it didn t have enough ventilation and the inside was so smoky.

SPEECHLESS!! The best brunch dish I have ever tried worldwide and in all Ontario. The food was SPECTACULAR! It s hard to describe the texture and mix of flavours on this dish. I will call this dish nobody can t miss to try! Well done Saint James team!

A cute and homey cafe to grab some brunch. They are pretty busy but luckily some tables had just left when we arrived. They are a bit understaffed, especially during peak brunch times, so the service was a bit slow (the food took a long time and the table wasnt cleaned from the previous diners). Despite this, the prices are very reasonable and I especially enjoyed the pancakes.

The place has a cute & bright atmosphere. Ive been here several times and have really only ever ordered breakfast sandwich+coffee, but the people Ive visited with have ordered a variety of other items and all enjoyed. All around good food and environment.

The Gatsby is a must have for all breakfast enthusiasts, as is the oatmeal.

Had brunch, we both ordered wrong! Food was hot and fresh but we chose without really understand what we were ordering. The menu was confusing but just because it was our first time we will do a better job of ordering next time

Amazing coffee, delicious food and great price. Friends and I stopped by here because our original plans had changed and we were highly impressed. Will definitely be back soon.

This was one of the best breakfasts I ve ever had. The eggs were fluffy and soft, the potatoes, THE POTATOES!! So crunchy and the perfect amount of salt.

We had very good and Tasty breakfast ! Only thing we didnt like They didint bring all the food in once .

Theres 2 signs by the register, order here and wait to be seated. The person at the register was clueless and almost gave away our table. Need better ventilation. Food was ok, rather go to The French, pay a bit more but my table is booked and I dont have to eat on the street.

Ordered a smash burger, it wasnt smashed. One of the driest burgers I have ever eaten. Bathrooms were nice and clean.

It wasn t a traditional bacon, eggs and toast breakfast. However it was so incredibly flavourful, and original that it has become my favourite breakfast spot. Also noteworthy: best cappuccino ever!

We came in, saw a very short menu on the wall, and thought geez this is not what we thought. Asked the lady working if there was somewhere to have a good sit down breakfast, she said here! Exlained because of hours their menu on wal i shortned. Breakfast was fantastic, as well as service!

Really cute spot to grab a quick breakfast, coffee and or pastries. The drive thru sandwhich was really good - perfect combo of all your favourite breakfast foods into one perfectly sized dish. They have a roadside patio set up for the summer. The inside dining set up is cute and cozy.

Unique setting with lovely food, coffee and atmosphere. Friendly service.

Snug spot for more refined versions of classic brunch food. I liked the addition of salsa verde to the avocado toast for a unique herbaceous component. I also enjoyed the smoked salmon and egg toast, but I feel like it could ve also used a little something more to cut the richness of the scrambled eggs. There is limited indoor seating; likely would need to wait for large groups when it s busy.

A James North must visit. I love eating here! Beautiful space, welcoming atmosphere. The avocado toast and the drive thru breakfast sandwich are incredibly delicious! The chefs certainly know what theyre doing. The Servers are very on the ball and tnoughtful. The owners are absolutely lovely.

The quality of the food here is delicious and wonderful. So if you re looking for good breakfast food this is the place to go! (I have yet to try their lunch menu but I don t doubt it s also delicious). I was reluctant to not give 5/5 but I gave 4/5 stars because of how small the place is and chances are you re going to have to wait for a bit to be seated especially weekends, parking is limited since it s off a busy street, also it s a bit on the pricey side for some of the portions you get, however the quality of the food makes up for it. Excellent breakfast place! I absolutely loved the pancakes, the eggs, the coffee, everything was perfect! We also came with our toddler and they were very accomodating The only big negative for me is that they are located in Hamilton and I live in Toronto which means I wont be able to come back very often!

Small cafe, seating approx. 12 people with direct view of the kitchen. The Malibu and Great Gatsby breakfast sandwiches were fantastic and the caramelized banana shortstack was divine. The growing population of homelessness in downtown Hamilton is apparent now more than ever. The manager was gracious and kind, offering coffee, food and a warm place to eat inside for a gentleman that had entered and was asking customers for money for a coffee. As the cafe filled with customers waiting for a table, the manager waited 45 mins to pass before asking the gentleman for a word outside. He gave the gentleman another coffee and money before parting ways. The gentleness and respect shown was admirable to witness and I commend the business for their professionalism.
