This eatery serves traditional Indian fare such as tandoori & biryani in comfy, easygoing surrounds.
Give them a chance. New owner. Try the veggie samosa. Those are amazing and big. I buy 10 pieces and freeze.
The food is fantastic. But don’t order for delivery before 6pm. We ordered for a 5:20pm delivery. When I called at 5:50pm asking where our order was, I was told that they opened at 5 and we needed to give them an hour. Not sure why their website gives you the option to have it delivered before 6 if it physically isn’t possible.
I ordered chicken biriyani from them and its was the worst Indian rice I ever tasted. Food tasted like it been sitting there for 2 days and microwaved. Don’t look or taste anything like biriyani rice, more of like curry or oil rice. If they had an option for zero star. I would have. Definitely do not recommend. Such a waste of money..😡
"The butter chicken was disappointingly watery and overly sweet, lacking the expected flavour profile and resembling more of a chicken in dal gravy. The garlic naan also fell short, with barely any garlic taste; it seemed more like plain pita bread with chunks of garlic on top. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone."
I ordered four orders of chicken curry via delivery. The orders came in smaller styrofoam containers providing less quantity than you usually get from other Indian establishments. The curry was also very runny like soup and unlike any Curry you would typically get. The taste was very watery and bland.
The inside of the restaurant is designed great and reflected India was surprised by the fact it was opened on the 1980's. The food is priced so affordable irrespective of the location. The food tastes average, but for 10$ they are serving special lunch which includes a non veg dish along with rice, snacks and sweet based on the day. which is a fantastic thing for the price. Ordered bhatura for trying but it was not the authentic bhatura which i was expecting though tastes decent. The restaurant is good for giving it a try.
A Cozy little Indian restaurant. Serving authentic Indian cuisine. From appetizers to desert. Even Indian pale ales and lagers. Lol.. had to say that. Clean, very friendly . Great food! First time for me in an Indian restaurant. Not a serving I didn't like. Spicy and fresh.
I started coming here over 30 years ago. The owner said they have been opened for 35 years so I guess I’ve been coming here since it opened. It’s a staple of Hamilton. They have a traditional tandoor oven and the tandoori chicken and vindaloo is to die for! We didn’t have it today but chose to do a meal combo for two. It was delicious!! I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone craving real authentic Indian food made in a traditional tandoor oven that we brought her from India.
Do not order the biryani, its a joke, basically cheap chinese fried rice but with tumeric. if you dont know how to make it take it off your menu.
Best Indian food ever, such a hidden gem!! My favourite place to get takeout.
Ordered from the Too good to go app for $7. All I got was 1 naan slightly bigger than my hand and a small cup of rice (165g) and half of it was from the bottom of the pot which was burnt.
Gujarati thali the best
This was exquisite Indian food and a beautiful, quiet place to eat. Really nice experience.
To be honest it been couple times already that I order there and it s all good. The food is excellent I have nothing to say and I m about to try everything on the menu thanks a lot !!
My first time having Indian food I don t know anything about it it was art crawl and they had special chicken biryani so i try it for the first time and it s like a party in my mouth it was so good I Will going back for more
Ordered food from Too good to go app, food quality and quantity was good for $7
Great service and the food is amazing. This place is a hidden gem. Vegetarian options: Many options Food : 5/5 |
Excellent food great service. Vegan and gluten free options.
Lots of Indian restaurants in downtown Hamilton these days, but Sagarmatha and Gate of India are the two long-time enduring ones. Sagarmatha is Nepalese-style Indian food while Gate of India is Bangladeshi-style. Gate of India is slightly older and has a nicer dine-in environment, but Sagarmatha has superior food quality and quantity for similar prices. Would not recommend online ordering for Gate of India as ordering through their website sometimes does not get processed on the restaurants end. The pekoras were very tasty!
So we ordered off of too good to go app and I have to say this is probably the worst place to order food. The service was excellent, but the food was absolutely horrid. The rice had the weirdest flavour, it was bland and incredibly dry. The sauce was watery and the spring rolls were small. I m not sure about their other food, but I wouldn t recommend it if you re planning on using too good to go.
Went there for dinner with large group of friends. Very friendly and efficient service, good food. Unfortunately, we were the only guests there.
I love Indian food. I had a bunch of Indian and fusion Hakka style living in Scarborough for years. This place s lamb dhansak dish is one of my favourite dishes ever. Friends recommended this dish and I ve had it 10x from this place without an issue. Garlic naan, rice and the dhansak 10/10. Best Indian in the city 100%
I order Bhuna Gost and Pulao rice. The rice was half way cooked. I called them and the guy who answered said I am faking. Just for 2dollar rice lol. Never ordering here and recommending Uber to take this place off their list.
Worst experience ever ! Ordered Egg rice and Mushroom pulav, I still couldnt differentiate between the two. You will get turmeric and rice thats all. I could even smell the turmeric its not even cooked properly. Uber has to take this shop out from their list. Ended up wasting money.
Politely, this can t be called Indian food. If this is your first time trying Indian food, trust me it s not supposed to taste like this. They put mushrooms in the biryani, let me not say anything else.
Ordered through Good to go app. It was just dried rice with 2-3 tiniest pieces of chicken with 2 spring rolls. It can never be worth 21$. Never going back. They used to be so good on the app. No idea how they became this bad.
This is amazing food and they always have excellent customer service skills. However last night I ordered and their new packaging for food exploded all over me and left blisters on my leg and red marks still today on my wrist. It was very painful. I will keep ordering from here, however I am advising you to go back to your old packaging. Only due to how fresh and hot the food is. It was a very painful experience.
Food was excellent and fairly priced
I ordered from here through the to good to go app. I ended up finding some reviews from another site in specific regards to the too good to go orders and then I also came on here and check the reviews.. and Im glad I did not check them until after I ordered the food or I may have been thrown off a little bit. Im not sure what this is it looks like it could be the butter chicken or tikka masala.. they both taste super similar to me and sometimes I have problems telling them apart... but unlike the reviews here there is a ton of chicken inside of the sauce and Im not sure if other people are aware but consistency of curry chicken or butter chicken tikka masala.... all those things... Really depends on the culture thats making them.. as they slightly vary in thickness and ingredients... Honestly this food is amazing. The spices are just right its not too salty not too spicy perfect amount of kick not sure why people are complaining about tomatoes.. youre not going to die if theyre not fully cooked.. and you dont want mushy tomatoes inside of recipes like this or you might as well just blend it in the sauce... On top of all of that the people working there were nothing but smiles and cheer... Atmosphere was very calm and relaxed and it was just great vibes..... I would love to dine in soon and because I ordered through this app I will definitely be spending my money here when I have cravings for Indian food .. 5 stars
TERRIBLE! We ordered on Too good to go app and recieved two containers of rice with two tiny rolls of some type. Lousy for $14 of food. The rice was bland. Huge dissapointment. Wont be going back. Not honest business practice.
We came from Toronto and were looking for best food in city. This restaurant is best in taste , hospitality and food quantity. You can t find better food than this location.
Best Indian food I ever had . The meat is perfectly tender , the chai tea is not overly sweet and well blended ( not just full of nuts like other places) . The sause was perfect and not overly spiced ( perfect blend) . The dessert was the rose sause syrup ball ( Gulab Jamun). Was so different and tasty from the ones I had before . I ordered alot of food .... And only paid $33 dollars ( a chai tea, appitizer, main meal of goat , naan, and dessert). Great price , great service ( was always taken care of , and food was timed well) , nice decor ( real table cloths ) , and a wow experience! Dietary restrictions: They change the slice level for you
Excellent customer service, ambience, and food! Reasonably priced too
Restaurant closed
After reading other reviews, a lot of them negative, I decided to try Gate of India with a friend and make up my own mind. Glad that I did! The food was plentiful, hot, and very good. The service was excellent. There was enough food that the leftovers did me two more lunches! I will definitely be back. Thank you. Fast forward a year and we visited again. When the food arrived the fragrant aroma made my mouth water. It looked, smelled, and tasted fabulous! Again we have left over that will be a couple more lunches. When you start figuring out what youll eat next time, you know that youve found yourself a Winner!
Their Tandoori chicken breast was so dry and overcooked it felt like trying to eat drywall. It had probably been sitting cooked in the fridge for a few days, if it hadnt been cooked from frozen. Other than that, we had a dish that bravely tried to reinvent butter chicken using a new recipe that substituted a pitcher of pureed onions in place of the cream.
The food was delicious. However, the washrooms are downstairs inside this restaurant. It was really smelly. I felt disgusted due to the lack of hygiene and cleanliness where the washrooms are located. Dietary restrictions: Halal food available. However, haraam alcohol also served.
Friendly staff. Tasty food.
Always an authentic and delicious experience! Great restaurant that is a staple of the downtown Hamilton community.
I recently visited Gate of India restaurant with high hopes of enjoying an authentic Indian culinary experience. Unfortunately, my visit left me deeply disappointed, primarily due to the poor quality and insufficient quantity of the food. One of the dishes I ordered was the Chicken Do Pyaza, which is known for its rich flavors and succulent meat. However, I was shocked to find that the chicken seemed as if it had been prepared several days ago. The meat was tough and lacked the freshness one expects from a well-cooked dish. It was disheartening to receive a plate of food that fell so far short of its reputation. To complement my meal, I opted for the Garlic Naan. Sadly, the naan served to me was pre-cooked, lacking the authentic taste and texture of a freshly prepared naan. It felt as though a shortcut had been taken in the kitchen, resulting in a subpar accompaniment to the main dish. Adding to the disappointment was the meager quantity of food served. The portions were noticeably small, leaving me feeling unsatisfied and questioning the value for money. The lack of generous servings further contributed to the overall disappointment of the dining experience. Beyond the culinary aspect, the ambiance of the restaurant failed to create an immersive Indian dining experience. The decor and atmosphere were lackluster, lacking the warmth and authenticity one would expect from an establishment claiming to offer Indian cuisine. While I understand that restaurant experiences can vary, my visit to Gate of India fell significantly short of the expectations set by its name and its purported commitment to authentic Indian flavors. It is crucial for a restaurant to consistently deliver quality food, adequate portions, and an inviting atmosphere, especially when representing a specific cuisine. I sincerely hope that Gate of India takes customer feedback seriously and endeavors to improve their food quality, portion sizes, and overall dining experience. As it stands, based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend Gate of India restaurant to others seeking an authentic Indian culinary journey.
Food is incredible, staff is so gracious and kind, great music played inside, fabulous atmosphere.
Very unpleasant experience, I heard a lot about this place so went to try as I was planning to take my group of 25 people for dinner to celebrate special occasion. To start with we went to try food for lunch and do reservations for the dinner, the quantity was very small for the price !when we asked them to please do reservations for the that evening they informed us that they need 3-4 hour notice to we did that then they asked us ( we are the customers) to call owner to get permission if we can do that , they can t call the owner to find out themselves. After all that is done they said actually we can do reservations as the chef will leave soon so it won t be possible to serve us. What a lose of customer forever, first they lost sale for over $600 for that evening and rest of the sake and customer forever. I won t recommend this place
Great food, very good prices, amazing staff. Really cute atmosphere and good hours. This place is consistently great. So glad theres a really good Indian restaurant nearby. I bring friends here and get takeout. Food
I tried this restaurant without reading any reviews first and am surprised now to see so many negative comments as I logged on to write this. Maybe the quality varies by time of day or which chef or I dont know, but I can say that I really enjoyed my experience. The waitress was kind. The owner even asked us how our food was and made friendly conversation. I got matar paneer and my friend got the tandoori platter. Both of us really enjoyed our food. I also very much appreciated that the atmosphere was quiet enough for good conversation. There was music playing but it was not too loud - so rare these days. The prices are some of the best Ive seen in Hamilton! Two of us ate well for $35. And there will be at least one more meal from the leftovers. I would recommend this restaurant.
Been coming to this place for years and as always the food, service and atmosphere are excellent. Best Indian food in the GTA in our opinion.
Food was bland, vegetables tasted horrible, service took way too long, and I will not come back.
Food was delicious! Meat samosas, onion bhajis, chicken dopiaza, potatoes and garlic naan.
Amazing food!
One of my favorite places to eat in the city. Always genuinely welcoming, and the food is fantastic and affordable. Vegetarian options: Great selection of vegetarian dishes.
Love this place. By far my favorite Indian restaurant. Food is fantastic and authentic. Prices are reasonable. Great place for a date night as it has good ambiance. Interior could use some updating but overall I cant complain. Will definitely continue to eat here.
Im conflicted at writing this review. The location is great, the staff are attentive, but the food... I dont think Ive ever had food this bland. Totally unexpected really when you walk in and the restaurant smells so enticing. The curry if you can call it that, was a watery mess that barely held itself together. When eaten with rice, you tasted the rice more than the curry. And it was white rice. The curry was so watery that when eating the rice it tasted like rice and water. We didnt even bother with the naan since it would have been sopping up water... I dont know who was cooking that night, if the restaurant was trying to stretch their food, or if Gate of India truly wanted to gate off all of the flavour that India has to offer. One can only hope that they review the amount of water added to their curry and wont be so heavy handed with it. Food: 0 Staff: 3 Atmosphere: 3
Ordered chicken curry via delivery last night ..it was a buy 1 get 1 free offer..but they give you curry in 2 small Styrofoam containers..the qty was literally lesser than any large container qty we usually get from any other good Indian restaurant. The quality of food was terrible..it was runny watery gravy with absolutely no flavour and barely any chicken pieces..and yes paid $24 for this..strongly Do Not recommend this place..
The worst chicken curry i have eaten It s waterly and no test Food
Authentic freshly made to order India food and a 3 course lunch special that cant be beat!
I ve been coming here for years it s the best
Delicious food quick service
Hands down worst Indian food ever tasted, if you like bland water with chicken or beef you would love this place, if your looking for flavourful curry steer away
This is our favorite Indian in the city. Had dinner with friends last night. A table full of delicious choices. So much flavor. The Chicken Madras and Chicken Tika Masala was incredible. As was a lamb dish my wife ordered. Came in a little sizzling bowl. The flavor was outstanding along with a delicious vegetable Biryani. Come dine in for the best experience.
Worst restaurant. Worst food quality. The chicken curry was full of water and uncooked tomatoes were popping out . Never go to this place. Food
I just ordered a Garlic naan from this restaurant. I got the dried maan and it was all black burnt from one side. It was almost burnt. It seems like they are serving ash on bread. Their food quality is so worse. Dont order food from this place, its too worst...
Best meat samosa!!!!!
Ordered from uber eats. The butter chicken sauce was yellow, had absolutely no spices. We actually ended up adding our own spices lol. It was super sweet for some reason, like they poured a ton of white sugar into it and no other spices. The samosas are okay, nothing to call home about. Same with the naan. The only actual decent food we ordered was the saag paneer.
food test good and fresh
Awesome takeout!
Mulligatawny soup is literally just a broth, no vegetables or anything else.Rest of meal was about a 6 out of 10z Not bad, but I probably wouldn t order from there again.
Just delicious. Service was nice and attentive, dishes were great, and price was reasonable. Its a fairly traditional setting decor-wise, but I think that adds to charm.
This restaurant is the worst restaurant in town. The staff is super rude and does not deserve even star.
We just ordered from Uber eats. The food was actually horrible. I ve never had such bad Indian food in my life. The butter chicken, chicken tikka masala and lamb tikka masala was so runny and no flavour at all! I m so disappointed.
I had chicken biryani, beef seekh kabab and gulab jaman. Food was tasty in a gora style. You can request for spices if you want. Biryani was more likely a Pulao with boneless chicken in it but tasty. Seekh kabab were so yummy and gulab jaman were super tasty and fresh. Will visit/order again esp for gulab jaman and beef seekh kabab. Prices are quite reasonable with appropriate quantity.
We ordered on uberests. SUPER SWEET, sugary taste. Absolutely no spices and the chicken was old with only a few pieces. No vegetables, no spices and a sauce that has seen better days (it was separating). I called the restaurant and they told me it s very mild and sweet, and they use a bunch of sugar! A bunch of sugar. If I could give no stars I would.
Terrible. Too sweet, the sauce was separating and everything was luke-warm, the naan was dry and cold, and there was absolutely no spice or anything. The chicken was rubbery and we only got 3 tiny pieces. This isn t Indian food at all. I don t know what it is. Never going back again. Wish I could leave half a star.
Fantastic food
Food was VERY DISAPPOINTING! Very sweet no spices all the dishes had the same sauce, Chicken and beef tasted and looked like some dried up processed meat, Told the waitress her remark was she didnt know she is a vegetarian but she would take care of it, She didnt. In a way I cant blame her the two men working back were yelling at her to serve another customer while so was serving us. We wont be back!!!!!!!!
Bad behaviour with the customers, very poor customer services
Bad behaviour with customers and bad customer service.
Nastiest butter chicken Ive ever had, threw it right out.
The food was absolutely fantastic and so was the service ..we will be going back
Always delicious and excellent service!!! My favorite indian restaurant in Ontario!!! Thanks for the lovely food and service!!!I i super recommend this place!!!
Worst ever Indian Restaurant in last 35 years of all I have been visited in USA & Canada. We order Chicken Tikka which was tasteless , chicken Makhani which was very sweet, that We don t even need to order any sweet dish. Only thing we enjoy was beer. Our server was nice. Don t visit
I order here a lot but tonight our delivery was 45 min late and the food wasn t as good as usual. Different chef I am guessing but I am hoping the old chef is just on vacation and will be back soon or I ll have to go somewhere else.
Good yummy indian food
Great place for Indian food. Food is amazing and very reasonably priced. The value you get with the lunch special cant be beat
New fav!
Wonderful food. Not spicy, but lots of flavour. Clean washroom.
Good food and friendly staff . Dated interior but authentic Indian food.
Very bad tasting food.
Fantastic food!
Her demeanor changed when we asked for takeout, gave her the benefit of doubt because people have off-days.We went back because the food is good & asked to order takeout, she gave us the menu and charged us double what was listed. Her excuse was that was the old price. We immediately canceled our order and left. The extra star was because the food is good. She is incredibly rude. Disappointing.
Nice..
Great value for the lunch special that includes the curry with a choice of beef, chicken, lamb, and veggie, rice, and dessert.
Brought my 2 young kids here tonight and had a wonderful time. Dad, we have to come back here again! and we most certainly will. Lovely restaurant.
The butter chicken is so bad tasted like watered down broth not authentic at all !
Great place to eat the prices are good and food is excellent
Worst butter chicken in town!
Worth food worst owner nice staff,, dont come for indian food it just has name india but they are completely faking it ,,
The service is poor, we ordered 2 chicken dishes and they tasted really bad. Complete misrepresentation of Indian food! The chicken was so tough, i could make winter tires out of it! I am so disappointed!
It was a nice experience. The food was bland in my opinion. I had the daal and the mushroom dish... those were super bland... mushroom dish was like an Italian dish. I then had the egg curry... that was better but extremely small portions! For close to $10 each.
Really Good Food! A wide variety of spices in the dishes! For sure feels like a unique Indian Experience!
Excellent food, great service and low price !
Not recommended at all. I wish i could give them negative rating. This is not authentic Indian food. I ordered veg korma with naan, samosa and tea. None of them was good. Tea was totally tasteless and for samosa I think I just paid for oil. $2.25 for 2 samosas filled with oil. Korma just had cabbage and peas soaked in sugar syrup and they call it gravy. Naan were not freshly made, looks like they warmed up the frozen naan. The only good thing about the restaurant was the customer service. The girl working there (wear glasses) was very good, patient and polite with a big smile on her face and this one star belongs only to her. Except that there was nothing appreciable. Go to Himalaya restaurant in hamilton or go to #Doabasweetsandresturant in brampton or #Rajdhani restaurant for reasonable prices and good quality food.
By far the grossest butter chicken i have ever had. watery flavorless and chicken i spit out. I just placed an order for the same thing from another place 2 minutes after i received this poor excuse for Indian food. Very disappointed and will never eat here again. 1st pictures are from Shehnai Restaurant!! So good! 2nd pics from Gate of India! So gross!! Chicken from Shehnai was tender and amazing! Gates was rubber and just bad!! Not to mention the portion size! Never eat here. Order from Shehnai Restaurant you will have a much better experience I promise.
We have dined in before and it was one of the best Indian meals we have had but last night we decided take out was the better option and were very disappointed by the quality and how our food was cold even though we showed up 10 minutes before our pick up time.
I wont recommend this place at all, specially when you know what Indian food is!!! First of all, few basics were missing - no daal makhani, shahi paneer, etc. Second off all, whatever we managed to order was not worth it at all. We ordered: Chicken rogan josh - floating tomatoes, some random gravy and far away from what name suggests. Chicken was not tender at all. Matar Paneer - Super sweet peas completely shadowing paneers taste which was more or less cottage cheese - wont recommend. Garlic naan - It was like a tandoor roti topped with some sort of garlic spread, again didnt like it at all. Samosa - The only star I am giving is because of samosa. PS: One of us is not feeling since morning, not sure what or who is accountable.
Very poor quality of food. I won t recommend this place at all. It just ruined the mood. There was no taste at all. Very bad experience.
One word: never again. No spice, No salt, No pepper, kind of boiled meet. Funny food, I ever had
My last visit is the last visit
Worst experience ever. I think the chef added sugar instead of salt in it and the chicken had weird black holes in it. Flavorless, tasteless gravy and chicken.
I ordered chicken biriyani for my sister through uber eats. I want them to be happy and surprised. But the chicken biriyani was not good and it was full of turmeric taste. It looked like white rice mixed with turmeric powder with few chicken breasts to it. I am so disappointed with the food. Chicken biriyani was of CA$ 13.96. Its not worthy at all. Waste of money Wont recommend to anyone
Great owner and great food. Very friendly!
Good food!!!
Amazing food and kind people!
Nice food
Failed at making a basic salad....please use fresh lettuce and cucumbers next time, I used real money.
Seriously terrible I didnt think an indian restaurant could get Indian food that wrong. Tasted and looked like blended leftovers.
Below average food. Very watered down. Will not go back. Trust the Indians. They arent lying
Worst food..we spent 65$ not worth even a single penny
nice place to dine in and great customer service!
Absolutely amazing authentic Indian food. Best samosas I have ever had. Very impressed.
Ive tried a couple of times and really, its not good.
Good hospitality and customer service. Environment is too welcoming and royal appearance and acquaintances. Food is also good. I ordered a tandoorii today with my biriyani but it was not up to the quality or taste. Expect much better food from your heritage restaurant. Thank you, just thought to give a feedback
Good basic Indian food, lots of takeout orders being picked up.Dining in was good, not busy on a Wednesday night. Didnt feel rushed, licensed...good Indian beer! Would go there again.
I took two friends from out of town friendly staff excellent service fast and amazing dishes order,Rogan Josh Beef,Chicken Curry, samosa must try,Naan bread, rice and Shrimp vinaloo for dinner great prices plenty of food.on top of that two orders of butter chicken for meals over the weekend will be back again and many more times.
My family and I have been going to The Gate of India for decades. It is a craving I have quite often. The food is always delicious, and portions are great. So much so, that there are always multiple meals for days afterwards. I recently tried an Indian restaurant down the street from me and was terribly disappointed. The Gate of India has spoiled me with amazing tastes and flavours. Will continue to support.
Pakoras are burnt Appetizers are not worthy the price
The attitude of the male staff was very good. Equally bad was the attitude of the female staff. Their behavior was only that we should settle down after eating food quickly and that woman stood there as long as we were having food. Which we got very wrong. And if I talk about the food, then the restaurant was very clean formula and good. We went in search of Indian food only in the name of Gate and Off India but the food was not far away Indian. The staff said that the food is Bangladeshi Taste. If you want to go according to Indian test please dont go
Amazing Indian/Bangladeshi food. They take some time cook it but the food is fresh! We ordered a lamb biryani, the sharer platter and mughlai goshth beef). Omg the mughlai gosht is probably the best beef Ive ever tasted. I got it twice. I also got the Mango lassi which they put roohafza in and this makes it taste even better. The owner was serving us and hes super nice. The service was really great. The decor is beautiful as well. Would definitely recommend!
I generally like Gate of India. The service is pretty attentive, but sometimes too much so. A server tried to clear a dish *while* I was eating out of it. The owner checked to see if everything was okay and is always cordial. We ordered the CC combo for 2 (+ 2 samosas and 2 extra naan) and it easily fed 2 adults and 2 kids - though we werent starving when we showed up. The curries were short on meat and heavy on sauce, which I guess is typical for most Indian fare, but Id like something else in my curry - potatoes or peppers or cauliflower. Tip options for a card start at 15%, with no dollar amount option, which I prefer. Take home is in styrofoam, which for me these days means I wont likely go back. Sometimes I take my own take home containers, but not this time, so I sadly took home in styrofoam (and which is why we ordered small, to avoid take home and to make a long story longer: we avoid food waste so it had to come home). Ill go back, but its not a spot we *frequent*.
Really awful food
Small portions, terrible customer service and bland and tasteless food. Go to sagarmathas this place is a waste of time. Never again.
Enjoyed the food. Staff was really helpful and friendly.
Not great, not bad. The food is fresh, but the Indian flavour is lacking. It is quite mild; if you find Indian food too aggressive, try this place, you will probably like it.
This is the best Indian Restaurant in Hamilton .I Tried so many places but the food here is great .its looks like an Old vintage kinda restaurant but the Food is really delicious .Prices are reasonable .Worth every penny . Didnt wanted to go at first tried on Groupon coupon and love the food it will be my regular restaurant if I waana dine in .The food service is 10/10 and the Food too is 10/10. Much better then other flashy Restaurant out there .
Decent really small portions tho
They served dishes which were sweet when we asked for chilli and the special platter quantity was less than expected
Quick take out. Decent quality
The food is terrible. The butter chicken tasted like watered down chicken broth. All 3 curries didnt taste how they are supposed to taste...at all. Very disappointed with how much I just spent for this. I will be following up for a refund.
The food is absolutely DELICIOUS. I loved the staff and the service was excellent. Lunch specials are great and not expensive at all. The menu options are amazingly wonderful. I highly recommend the Gate of India for a lovely experience.
Worst experience ever...we ordered delivery. Food was an hour and a half late, it was over priced and didnt taste very good at all. Will never eat here nor recommend.
Take out review: just had our first of what will be many meals from this place! After hearing from others how this was their favorite Indian restaurant, I can tell you, they were not wrong. I cant believe the rating on here so I had to leave a review. Everything was extremely delicious. He did warn us about how spicy the vindaloo was, and he wasnt wrong, but it was still tasty! Lamb Korma and Tika Masala were absolutely amazing, and samosas and onion bahjis we could not get enough of. Naan much to say about the naan other than daam, it was great too! See what I did there! Anyways, great spot. Definitely will repeat again and again!
Good food. This is my first time and Im happy with the order.
Always enjoy the food. Great value lunch specials.
Least like as far as the food type in hamilton
This was the worst takeout of our lives. We are new to Hamilton, and placed an order for ourselves and some guests. One of the items was not in our delivery, but after calling the restaurant, we asked for a refund and they obliged. This was a sign we think...After opening and tasting the remaining dishes, we can honestly say we wished the entire delivery was misplaced....It was the most tasteless food. We ordered Butter Chicken (tasted as sweet as a Coke), Chicken Tikka (bright orange and absolutely tasteless), garlic Naans (soggy and tasteless, but better then anything else we ordered), plain Naans, Aloo Gobi(terrible...)...they were all terrible. I have never eaten worse takeout of any kind. And our guests agreed....Most of the food is going in the garbage, which is such a terrible and expensive waste.
Honestly just kind of disappointed in my experience here. Went in for iftaar dinner with some friends, food took a long time which is understandable since it s made to order, but the portions were abysmal and the flavour just wasn t there in the tandoori chicken or the rice. I said I probably wasn t coming back in the original review, but I can say I am definitively not now that I ve had good Indian and Pakistani food in Hamilton.
Good service
I am so frustrated with this restaurant! The owners have spoiled me for every other Indian Cuisine restaurant. 23 years ago my wife and I entered the doors of The Gate and our hearts have never left even though we have not lived in Hamilton for 20 years now. On our first visit we were Noobs. We had no idea what we were doing. One of the owners made it his mission to educate us. I dont remember his name but he changed us for ever. In all the other Indian restaurants that we have been in, we have never had the quality of food that The Gate creates. I fell in love with the Lamb Vindaloo! Last night we had second rate Indian for the last time! The last straw was a so-called Naan. It was nothing more than pizza dough cooked in a tandoor. Their next door business just happened to be a pizza joint. We need to plan a meal at the Gate of India. We will drive past hundreds of other Indian restaurants on our way from Barrie. I dont expect to be disappointed.
Great service, great value. This is our go to for indian take out.
You will NOT get better Saag Chicken than this... I guarantee you that! Stopped by Gate Of India for a quick lunch and as expected, wasnt disappointed. While the Chai tea does need some work, the quality of service (what a pleasant man) and the tasty dishes made this one of the better lunches weve had out in quite some time. Do try the garlic naan and the Paratha, as they are great vessels to hold the saucy goodness of their curries. The onion Bhaji (excellent) and mixed vegetables with chicken (curry) (Thursday Special) is a very cost effective and tasty combo. Comes with rice and a dessert. Thank You Gate Of India.
It sa very good place.. tasty food.. hospitality is awesome... highly recommended @ Rahul the chef here makes amazing food
I ordered lamb biryani and it turned out to be the something else, i dont even know what to call it. There was nothing in it which make it biryani. Rice, lamb and gravy with it, nothing seems like biryani. I have added a picture as well you can see with yellow rice.
Worst indian mix veg (contains gravy) and curry chicken i have every tasted yesterday... garlic naan with no sign of garlic over that naan... worst experience ever... never wanted to waste food but i have to leave
Food was tasteless Ordered matar paneer but there was no paneer in it And ice-cream tastes really bad Mango slices in it were like from few days ago Very disappointed Worst experience ever
Although I am not a fan of this type of cuisine, I have many friends that really enjoy the food here.
Great prices for quite a lot of food. The service is also magnificent. Never had to ask for a refill on drinks or the bill, as they came at the perfect time. Quality of food was not skimped on when ordering lunch specials.
Really great service and fresh delish food
Love the food and great prices.
bland and way overly sweet. Very disappointing.. Only good thing were the samosas
Always reliably good. Best veggie korma around
My husband and I arrived a half hour before closing to be met by a man who with his hands on his hips said, You have fifteen minutes to eat your food and leave because I am locking the door then. We were stunned by his manner and tone. We had eaten there just a few weeks before and come at the same time to have a very different welcome from a different man. He waited on us promptly and he assured us that though he would lock the door we could take our time to eat. This last occasion it was obvious this fellow did not want us there and I turned to leave. My husband had a word with him about how poorly done our reception had been. It is likely not a big loss to us for a destination because the food was good but not great. Too many items look and taste similar so we were reduced to the same order each time. The portions are not large and rather disappointing in presentation. Since we had pumped a lot of coin in the parking meter I wandered a few doors North on James Street and encouraged my husband to take a chance on a restaurant called Mesa. It more than made up for our nasty experience at Gate of India. The atmosphere is clean and fresh. The staff were prompt and the food was beautifully plated. We loved it and will return.
very delicious and authentic
Quality food, romantically lit, reliable, attentive, old school napkin and tablecloth service and respectful to your wallet. I highly recommend this place if Indian food is your desire in Hamilton, ON. Its charming!
Best Indian restaurant in Hamilton. Great selection of curries and onion bajis are fantastic. The decor and atmosphere is like real authentic Indian restaurant you would find in United Kingdom.
Very nice people the best food ever we had been eating at this restaurant for 20 years
Always fresh and authentic! Great staff.
ABSOLUTELY NOT AUTHENTIC INDIAN FOOD....!! All dishes were sweet. Tandoori platter was just plain and not even little bit spicy. We left the food after eating one or two bites Moreover when complained then the staff refused to admit their mistake and insisted on full payment of ordered food.
Food is fantastic, staff is very friendly, truly one of downtowns hidden gems!
Well worst customer service i must say i ordered some food from which one of the worst thing is Raita i ordered it was too sour its like they are serving stale food i must stay although the worst part is when i called them a Ms said here people like this way only as if i came from Mars. They should learn how to deal with customer instead of telling them we know how Indian food taste like. At this if you will order Butter chicken or Chicken Tikka Masala both have same gravy it doesnt seem to be an Indian touch. The owner is nice person but staff is not good.
Great experience here with my friends. It was late in the day (on a holiday) and there was some food not available but the staff ensured we still had options we could enjoy. Food was delicious!
Best Indian food in the city and the staff is the best. So friendly. A definite must try
Always great for and service when we go
The real taste from the great ppl
100% The best Indian food Ive had ever. Hands down.
[UPDATE] First, I read through some of the most recent reviews and I see a theme going on here. FOOD TOO SWEET!!!! DANGEROUS FOR DIABETICS!!! Well, yesterday, during the Super Crawl, we thought wed give it a try. They has a so-called special. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE!!! It was not very busy there, so theres no excuse. But they took a good 10 minutes before even getting to us. At first, that didnt bother us, because at least the owner passed by and said that someone would be with us soon. So finally someone came. We ordered the special. THAT was difficult enough! The person taking the order, as we realized later on, really didnt understand English so well. We had to repeat ourselves 3 times before she got it. Not knowing the place, I asked if this special for 2 came on 2 plates as shown on the sign. I had to repeat that twice as well, but then she said it did. HERES THE 1ST PART THAT WAS HORRIBLE! They took almost 45 MINUTES to get the food to us! It was NOT busy in there! So why such a long time for a special!?? Most places, when offering a special, have the specials ready to go as those will move the fastest. First, they brought Samosas. I will say, the Samosas where about the best weve ever tasted. So we had high hopes for the rest of the food. After another 10 minutes, the food finally came. It was NOT impressive at all. First for $38, the amount of food is something like youd get in a food court for $10! It gets worse. One dish was Butter Chicken. Thats one of our favorite dishes that we order almost always whenever we go do to an Indian restaurant. This was THE WORST butter chicken weve EVER tasted!!! The sauce was so sweet we thought that they must be putting tons of sugar into it. THIS IS NOT HOW BUTTER CHICKEN IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!! The so-called, vegetables were just a few tiny pieces of WHO KNOWS WHAT, mostly POTATO!!! in a sauce that covered everything. In other words, lots more sauce than any veggie. There was the beef dish, it wasnt too bad. But not fantastic either. So far, weve not been able to find a REALLY GOOD Indian restaurant here in Hamilton. So when we really need a good treat of Indian food, we travel to Toronto where there are several really good places to choose from. There was one very close to work where the food is just amazing and the prices are very reasonable. And the service at this Toronto location is superb! WE WILL NOT GO THERE EVER AGAIN! We will also warn everyone we know to not waste their hard-earned money! ________vvvv___ previous review below ___vvvv__________ We have not been and will not go after reading all these reviews. Some of the so-called 5-star reviews seem suspiciously faked. ??? The negative reviews are very consistent, making note of bad food, not prepared right or not tasting right, to the poor service and some bad attitude by wait staff. I dont know what the hell these business people think they are doing, quite frankly (not just this place). They spend money to run a business, then treat their customers like garbage and some seem to serve garbage. Why Hamilton Health board doesnt close some of these places down, I dont know.. hmmm... one must wonder why. However, for THIS place, we will not be going. Too many reviews that warn of whats going on. Thanks for the reviews, everyone.
They should change the name to Bangladeshi Restaurant. Don t expect Indian taste there.
Worst experience.....their food are not indian. Its their own horrible recipes..
Everything I ve eaten here has been amazing. The chicken vindaloo is so hot it will make you cry. Great value for your money as well!
Been going here for years. Always an excellent meal with service to match. Their lunch special is particularly fantastic: a full meal on a pre-warmed plate at a table with real linens for less than a combo at McDonalds.
Enjoy it everytime
This is an insult to Indian food. I know what Indian food should taste like from travelling (to India) and also eating food in other parts of the GTA. Ordered Lamb Korma and Saag Paneer with Naan. The Korma was watery, sugary and flavorless. The Saag Paneer was terrible, it was mashed tiny bits of Paneer. Naan was thin and didnt have the right texture. I think this place is on its way out (of business) and the owners are trying to penny-pinch and cut corners. My server was polite. Will never step into this place again. Disappointed.
We just order a small takeout and we waited for a hour ..no one bothers about the order after getting paid..feel bad about the way they treat their customers.
Very small portions, watered down. Not coming back
The food was fantastic. The atmosphere was warm. Love the retro decor with an Indian flare. The service was prompt, accommodating and very friendly.
This was a very comfortable dining experience! The staff at Gate of India are so friendly and prompt. I had the best biriyani that I have had in a long time!
