True To Roots in Hamilton

Ordered online and got eschovitch fish and soup. The soup was a lil bit too salt and I couldn t drink it. The fish was ok.

I do not recommend this place. The man who serves the customers treats people badly. For more details, he is the one who serves at 10 pm.

Owner was very rude.

Horrible experience. The owner was disrespectful, not giving a proper greeting, and instead giving you a disgusting glare. The rice was tough and stale as if it was out all day, and tasted of freezerburn. The owner leaves open bottles in the shelves, then serves it to customers with fruit flies laying in the bottle. The cups were dirty, with stains on the outside and inside. This place smelt disgusting, and the chairs were sticky and unwashed. Horrible establishment.

Got a plate of food here today. I VOMITED all of the food I bought. First, I ate a little in the car - and threw up a little shortly after. I thought it was just acid reflux or something, So I drank water and waited, then ate some nuts and snacks and felt fine. Felt better after a while. Then I decided to eat the rest of the food, but threw it all back up in short order. No mistaking the cause. I dont feel terrible - my body just knew the food was rotten. Gotta keep food fresh! Not sure what kind of operation this is. NO street awning or sign AND an empty dead atmosphere. Cant recommend this place, unfortunately.

I ordered oxtail off Uber Eats and found a piece of plastic in my meal.

We got take out there today. Nothing we got was good. We waited a long time for the food. When we got it. The meat was obviously reheated and the soup was so burn you could smell it as we got into the car to drive away before opening it. Total waste of money for un-edible food.

Had the Curry chicken meal w/ coleslaw, rice & peas, and festival. Curry Chicken was well-made, lots of flavour and came right off the bone. Mixed in the coleslaw with the rice & peas and my, was that a great idea! Festival was tasty also!

A ton of food for a great price, flavourful, worth it.

Food Presentation was good. Wish I had taken a photo. I had Ox tail. It was hard as a rock. Dont order that if you ever come. Everything else was great rice an pea an coleslaw.

One of the best Jamaican food (chicken) I have eaten in Canada. My friend and I grew up in the Caribbean and that chicken really brought us back in time. We arrived quite late but the staff was very nice and the food portions were very generous. I had the strew chicken and my friend the jerk chicken and we were both very happy with our choice. Not only was the chicken really good but the rice and salad were also full of flavour. I honestly strongly recommend you this place especially if you are on a budget.

Are you guys even open till 11..? I tried to order twice on skip and it got canceled but you answered the phone once then never again

Everytime I try to order on skip or any app the delivery gets cancelled. Try to call, no answer and voicemail is full. Went in two sundays in a row, when the site says they re open 12 to 8. closed

I ordered delivery, so take my service/atmo ratings with a grain of salt. Anyway, its so refreshing to find a restaurant that isnt trying to sell you anything. They just feed you. Thats it. Thats what they do? Youre hungry? You wanna eat? Okay, GET HERE! You can get a meal of chicken, rice, and veggies plus coleslaw, the size of your head, for like a reasonable price. Thats reasonable! Thats more than reasonable. AND they throw in cutlery, which a lot of places wont do anymore even if you specifically ask them to. Wild.

$14.99 for large curry goat with some coleslaw. The meat was tender, the rice tasted good with the beans and the coleslaw wasnt bad! Either way you cant argue for the price and portion. Its a fair deal for $14.99

Drove by and decided to try it out. Service was horrible and food taste very plain. Ordered the jerk chicken special and had no flavour.

Disappointed with the food and service. Food lacked flavour and the jerk chicken was burnt. Hopefully the next dish I try is better.

I couldn t find festivals anywhere in Hamilton. Then I found True To Roots. And let me just say these are the best festivals I have ever had. The service is great and the food is great. 10/10 recommend. :)

Very good food and excellent service.

Jerk chicken was burnt and it was all we could smell and taste. Fried chicken was fairly bland - just ok. They cut it into pieces with a dull knife with shattered the bones in it all through out making it annoying to eat. Coleslaw was different. Didnt like it. Rice and peaaw was dry. Probably wouldnt order again after this first experience.

Was expecting better taste, jerk chicken was dry was dissatisfying.

Don t know why this place only has 3.5 stars definitely under rated. High quality food, big portions, nutritious, no nonsense. My kind of joint. The owner is a humble and hardworking dude. Hope this place gets the recognition it deserves !

First time my boyfriend and I were walking by and decided to try this place out. I got the jerk chicken and he got the ox tail, both were really good. The ox tail meat is so tender and delicious a must try! Not to mention the owner was very friendly. portions are good sized and food is super good, would recommend forsure! great spot to go :)

Bought a jerk chicken and a oxtail today. The rice was dry like chalk. The chicken taste like it was cooked on a dirty grill last week. The oxtail was black like tar, I think it was also cooked last week. I wasted $40 and I m still hungry. I do not recommend this place.

Best chicken I ve ever had!

Save your time and your money! Just ordered two chicken soups and they are horrible. Soup tastes as though they burned the bottom of the pot and then threw in extra salt to try and cover the taste of the burnt. Not one piece of chicken in both of the soups we purchased. No yam, no potatoes, no dumplings just couple of pieces of little carrots. Will definitely never be coming back here!!

Avoid this place. By far the worst food I have ever had. I have tried three Jamaican food in Hamilton and all were disappointing but this one takes the cake. The festival and dumpling were chewy and stale. The oxtail had no flavor just really salty. The jerk chicken was too spicy to enjoy on some of the pieces and one piece was pink all over so it couldnt be eaten. The coleslaw is not even coleslaw. It is steamed vegetables. Save your money (I am Jamaican btw and this is not how it is suppose to taste).

Found this spot while driving downtown. Decided to give it a try as my spouse only eats fish and so far has not been pleased with any of the Hamilton offerings so far. No complaints! Hands down the best food Ive had so far in this city. The food was excellent. The value was excellent and the size of the portions were larger then expected (we ordered small meals). The food was hot and tasty and the customer service was great. He asked appropriate questions to be clear on what we wanted and delivered as requested. We will definitely be back on a regular basis!!!!

I bought food from here yesterday and all I can say is I wasted my money!!! I bought fried chicken with rice & peas and a side of plantains.The plantains werent edible, they were rock solid and had no taste!! The chicken was black, creasy and tasted horrible!! Will not buy from here again!! Do not recommend!!!

I remember my daughter and son-in-law mention this place. Today I went there to grab some dinner for myself (ox tail dish) and it was the best ox tail I had in a very long time. The gentleman who took my order and cooked the food was awesome. I will be back there again...

The food is always hot and tasty and the service is always quick and friendly. The jerk chicken or the BBQ chicken, both on rice & beans are my go to orders. Servings are so large that I often ask him to put less in because it s too much for lunch. Lol.

What an amazing surprise. I was in Hamilton for the day and found this jewel of international cuisine. The Jerk Chicken is a masterpiece: full of flavor and juicy. And the best of all: at a price you wouldnt believe. The staff was also very kind. Take out or dine in? Doesnt matter. You have to try this place to give your taste buds an experience they will not forget (Certainly mine wont)

Im still waiting for my refund, my credit card was charged and they denied it, saying I need to pay again, I spent over $40 for 2 meals that cost $22.00, I still havent heard anything back from them.

I just bought the soup of the day & it was stale. More like , the soup of the day three days ago I have never tasted such sour soup in my life. I almost through up.

Fast and friendly service. I ate the chicken roti and had a guava juice. It was a bit more expensive than I had previously thought but it was delicious and definitely not microwaved like Ive had at other places in the past. I would absolutely go again and fully recommend it for others too.

Pathetic food. The chicken was burnt, dry, all bones and flavorless. Hearing a microwave being pressed in the back was a red flag. Save yourself the dignity.

Terrible food and service. Avoid at all cost unless you are on the brink of death but honestly death is a better option.

Driving by on James and decided to support this Restaurant. First impression of a good restaurant is the smell of the cooking when you walk in.. Nothing like that.. Ordered the Jerk Pork and The Ox Tail on Rice to go. Both dishes were pretty tasteless..not even a hint of jerk seasoning.. both meats were a bit tuff. For a Caribbean Restaurant the cooking here certainly fail..Nothing to lick your fingers about.. l can put down a better pot than that anytime..

Owner provided the best customer service experience we could ask for. The food was the bomb! Big portions, great price, and most of all tasty. True to Roots really lives up to its name and provides excellent Jamaican food. We almost gave up on Carribean in Hamilton, but True to Roots is a real gem for the city. Will definitely be visiting again.

Large ox tail is only 5 pieces.. you pay $14.00 for rice and the smallest coleslaw Ive ever seen. Food came in a container that leaked all over the bag .. no care in packing my order not even a napkin .. You can get better Jamaican food at 7 eleven.. dont waste your money

One of the best value / quality ratio in Hamilton right now. Good portions. Healthy feeling - none of that take out gut rut. Just the right amount of heat for Canadian palete - you wont burn your face off. We loved it!

Beef patties!!!!! I actually ordered through Skip The Dishes and I got a call from the restaurant telling me that the driver cancelled my order and never bothered to pick it up. Im extremely grateful the restaurant informed me of this and I re-ordered directly and my husband went to pick up the order. Great food, AMAZING SERVICE!!! If you want Caribbean order here!

Ok so I drove for 30mins n ordered goat. Pure Bones!! TERRIBLE! and I called to asked what was on the menu n was told various things that were not really there at all. Not Impressed wont be going back

This place is amazing. Hole in the wall right downtown. Its on my roster of quality food at a low price. Cant say enough good things. The owner even showed me his kitchen at the end of the day. The fridge and freezer were virtually empty! His new shipment came in that evening so you know everything is fresh made the day of. Plus their lunch special is great value.

Whenever I miss home I come here. The food is always hot, fresh and delicious.
