30 S Main St, Hanover, NH 03755, United States
Casual, modern menu with a diner-inspired interior. Breakfast served all day. Locally sourced fare, made from scratch since 1947. Kitchen open until 3pm, bakery and custard until close!
It is right on the main street in town and blends in with all the other businesses along the vibrant downtown area. Inside at around 10AM on a Sunday, all the tables and counter seats were taken. We took our place in line and within 10 minutes or so we were at a table. It features a nice menu with a good variety of things to choose from. Dispite their somewhat high prices, the place was packed. The food was good and the staff hard working, efficient, and friendly. It's worth stopping into this little gem and trying it out. There is on street parking and although it is handicapped accessible, it could prove challenging trying to navigate a wheelchair inside. If you found this review helpful, please tap the thumbs up to let me know. Thanks!
Delicious breakfast and even better service! Everything was homemade and served hot, which made the meal feel extra special. I had the December Benedict (ham and asparagus), while Michelle opted for the Irish Benedict—both were excellent. Their homemade bread is a standout, so we couldn’t resist adding a side of sourdough and cruller French toast. It was absolutely worth it! The only recommendation I have is to toast the English muffins a bit more for the Benedicts to give them a perfect balance of texture. Highly recommend this place for a hearty, homemade breakfast experience!
I went in after not coming to Lou’s for a long time. It’s always been a home like spot for my family and I to meet up for brunch or whatever. The service was great. However the food was not good at all. The home fries tasted dirty and old. The egg had a strange taste to it and was overcooked, I only ate a couple bites and did not want to take it to go. My girlfriend was equally disappointed. I expected more from Lou’s.
What a treat! Fast, friendly service that’s worth the wait. The Smokehouse Bowl is unique & delicious. I wish I had gotten a slice of chocolate mousse cake To Go—it looked tantalizing.
Had an amazing breakfast at Lou’s Restaurant! Ordered the breakfast steak and egg quesadilla and the California breakfast sandwich. Both were packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The quesadilla had tender steak and perfectly scrambled eggs, while the California sandwich was fresh and hearty. The portion sizes were generous, and the service was friendly and quick. Definitely a go-to spot for a satisfying and delicious meal!
Outstanding local dining experience on the main drag in Hanover. This local establishment has been around since just after WW2, and is a mainstay of the Hanover scene. Although it’s moved on from its diner roots, there are plenty of old favorites that harken back to that era. I went with a breakfast burger - bacon and eggs on top of a huge patty served with a side of home fried potatoes. The baked goods also looked fantastic and the coffee was excellent. Very filling, simple, and done very well. There is inside and outside seating, good service, and great food.
Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery is one of the only diners in the area with a diverse menu. They have a lot of options and are known for their breakfast items. However, we went at lunch, which was extremely busy (around a 30 minute wait for our meals). When we got our food (primarily sandwiches and salads) it was pretty good, but we had higher expectations given the reviews. We also got a donut, which was very good. If you’re in the area and want to check it out, try out some breakfast items at a time that isn’t too busy.
This place is the cutest little diner in Hanover. It’s like a blast from the past with all the pics and booths and low bar seats. The food was delicious (chicken and waffles!!) and service was great (considering Sunday brunch rush). The pies that we came to pick up, unfortunately, were just average tasting. We’ll def be back to try the other things on the menu.
Great breakfast. Parking: Street parking in front of Food : 5/5 |
Really great omelets and the coffee keeps comin Vegetarian options: You can choose your own omelet toppings Food : 5/5 |
Apple cider donuts are great, many good options for brunch.
Best eatery in Hanover. I was consider when the Frieds sold to new owners but in terms of food quality nothing has changed. Meanwhile most eateries in town have been on a slow decline in terms of flavor and quality since the 2010 s.
So wonderful- food, people, vibe
Classic small diner setting in Downtown Hanover. Creative menu with All-Day Breakfast. Homemade hash and poached eggs was delicious. Home fries are nicely spiced tots. Eggs are cooked perfectly! Ask for the homemade strawberry preserves for your toast. Our waitress, Hannah, was a sweetheart, and was on top of her game. Great experience and really good food. Be prepared to wait for a table, and be prepared to be happy that you did.
Great food, friendly staff. Very accommodating for dietary needs. Vegetarian options: Good options Dietary restrictions: Vegan tofu pesto scramble
Classic Hanover establishment -- nothing outrageous, but everything executed with skill and pride.
I ve been eating at Lou s for decades, and while the menu has upgraded, the basics are still available. The service is always friendly and efficient.
Never had a bad experience, always great!
Quickly stopped in to pick up a mile high apple pie Id ordered for my boyfriends birthday- it was delicious! Parking: Good luck finding a spot nearby, Hanover sucks for parking!
Grateful food, amazing breakfast. Fast, friendly service. Cant wait to go back.
Absolutely wonderful
Wow! No wonder there s always a line here!
Great service, great food, a staple in the community.

anytime I go to Hanover I must go here. love the atmosphere
Anytime. Were in Hanover, he usually for a reunion for football game or both. We stop at Lous. My wife loves their key lime pie. I like the food, its down to earth. Comfort food, easy to digest and well done. We went there today , Friday, October 3rd at around 2:30 p.m. The advantage of arriving at this time is that that it is not crowded the slight weight while they cleaned the table and we got to sit down right away. Try this in the morning at 10:00 a.m. at 9:00 a.m. at noon, forget about it. Classic Diner/Restaurant in Hanover. Very good food, service and people.
Lovely old school dinner with great food and great service. The key lime pie here is undefeated!
Food was great. Service was quick and friendly. Restrooms are downstairs not accessible to everyone. Wheelchair accessibility: Cannot really get a wheelchair around this place and restrooms are downstairs
Best place to eat in Hanover, hands down.
Diner food shouldnt be expensive! Two eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee for one person: $20. Note for the kitchen: crispy bacon doesnt bend when you pick it up.
Ordered take out breakfast maple French toast biscuit with sausage, egg and home fries. It was really good I never had a biscuit cooked in French toast batter OMG it was so yummy I m still thinking about it as I write this review . The home fries were ok but too salty for my liking. I ordered 3 doughnuts to go for my coworkers at DHMC asked for 1 glaze, 1 cinnamon and 1 maple twist the cashier gave me all cinnamon and didn t notice until I got back to Dartmouth kinda sucks but they said the doughnuts were really good. Still 5 * service. Definitely will go back but I ll be sure to check order before I leave Parking: There are a lot of shops and limited street parking but there is parking in the back of the business.
Sat at the counter. Great muffins, breakfast burger and German Omelette. First come first serve at counter but worth the wait for a table.
Got the avocado toast- looks beautiful and tastes amazing! Parking: Parked a little bit away - would like to have been closer Food : 4/5 |
I got a burger - perfectly cooked with soft flaky bun. Perfection. Lou s knows how to make a burger Parking: Had to park far away at separate lot- wish I could park closer
Great breakfast!
Food is delicious
Love this place! The restaurant has an older feel to it and it made the experience just perfect! Lots of food options and everyone was very friendly!
Love this place. Best diner in the Upper Valley. Great atmosphere, great food, great service. Everything is BIG! We love their Bakery goods too. All muffins are delicious, and especially their cruller donuts are a must! We always buy donuts to bring home when we eat there. Weekend brunch hour line can get crazy long. One more thing - their Cruller French Toast is worth a try at least once!
The food is good but the service is highly variable. I have ordered take-out here a dozen times and havent received my complete order once. When I notify staff that some part of my order is missing, they tend to be unfriendly and more often than not and try to gaslight me into believing that I probably never ordered the missing items in the first place, so its good to always keep the receipts!
Great atmosphere and delicious food. Highly recommend
Love this place
Courteous staff, delicious food, nice place.
Perfect last delicious breakfast ! Amazing friendly fast service ! Their maple syrup was so good we all got our maple shot !
Great food and AMAZING customer service from the staff!!!
Amazing brekkie in the iconic Lous restaurant, where locals and tourists go for a breakfast that will sustain you all day. Delicious does not come close to describing
Iconic Hanover diner lear at the baked goods while you wait in line for a table; vast and varied breakfast menu with sweet and savory and healthy and unhealthy options; eclectic crowd of locals and Dartmouth students.
great place for breakfast! Vegetarian options: easily able to make things vegetarian even if they aren t listed as such on the menu Dietary restrictions: many options for allergy alerts in online ordering system
My wife and I took a last minute day trip to Hanover. Stopped at Lous for lunch and it was a pleasant surprise. The service, from the host to the wait staff were pleasant, prompt, and courteous. Food was excellent. And outdoor seating .ade it more enjoyable. We recommend Lous and will return when we take a ride to Hanover again.
Great location for breakfast and pastries. Diner like setting has not changed in decades. The EBAs chicken sandwich is worth a try especially for those of us who were around for the original! Fried rice at a diner! What will they think of next?!?!?
Small traditional family brunch spot. Large menu with anything that you could want. Very nice wait staff but service could be a bit faster.
I had biscuits and gravy. It was FANTASTIC!! Definitely recommend
Best chicken and waffles. I cannot order this anywhere else now that I have eaten it here
Every time I got to Hanover I always eat at Lous, best restaurant in Hanover. 100% recommended! Vegetarian options: So many vegetarian options, the menu is very well marked and easy to understand. Dietary restrictions: Lous is very good about making sure your needs are met, they check with the cooks to make sure everything is good and even offer to make your food on a different stove so that you dont get sick.
Lovely place
A must try in Hanover
Cute restaurant with a vintage feel, has good waffles and omlette but epic homefries
You can just tell the place has history. Already looking forward to going back. Really solid experience, food and all.
Atmosphere hasnt changed a bit. Food has gone downhill fast. I feel sorry to anyone that eats here. They must be really struggling
A school classmate living in the area highly recommended this place. We decided to try Lous and were very impressed with the extensive menu, tasty food, and courteous and attentive waiter! Would definitely return next time in the area! You should try it too!
Supposedly an institution - in reality very average food and completely disorganized. Waitress forgot parts of our order. Breakfast eggs came out luke cold. Toast was late and delivered to the table AFTER I had eaten half my plate. Cappuccino was completely forgotten about. Waitress tried to make up some excuse about it being delivered to the wrong table. Side order of bacon was ordered and acknowledged by the waitress - never delivered. So in summary - breakfast delivered without toast or cappuccino / coffee. For a breakfast place thats pretty sad. No adjustments to the bill, and half hearted apologies from the wait staff. I guess its good to have a diner monopoly in the town!
Lou s is a simple American classic dinner from the past serving top quality offerings in the present. Loved the homemade chicken salad, the homemade chicken soup and more. This is the place for a quality lunch in the perfect setting.
Googled best breakfast place in the area,Lou s came up as #1. Reviews say how great it is NOT SO MUCH! Over easy eggs came out over hard and broken, has browns were burned, and cold, homemade hash should be called homemade potato and onion hash Worst breakfast . Food
Been here forever, try any of the bakery items!
The food is 10, the place was super full but it was worth the wait. I loved it.
Very original, delicious food
Great food. Lots of variety.
Great authentic old time diner. Pie case on the counter, great food, quick service. Could overhear some staff were complaining about customers and them taking too long to eat. Vegetarian options: They have tofu scramble on the menu.
Great food and tea, sat outside in the parklet so atmosphere was limited to the street scene. Surely quieter than inside though. Good service too.
Hosted some folks from Dartmouth here in New Zealand and they treated us to the Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix. They were delicious, huge, fluffy, super easy to make and not too sweet. Will have to try instore next time we are in Hanover.
I kid you not, my three egg, cheese sausage spinach omelet was one of the best I ever had. No ingredient spared. Fluffy and stuffed. So good.
Fantastic food and friendly service at Lou s. There s some outdoor seating as well. It gets busy and they close in the mid afternoon so get here early.
Parking: It s a well known college town. So parking can be difficult at various times of year: Football games, start of school year, etc. So visit early in the day, and wear walking shoes. Lou s has great coffee! Food
Food was amazing
Always a good brunch experience. Worth the wait to be seated (and there usually is one)!!
I do not understand the good reviews about this place. The sandwich tasted like one of those you buy from a fridge at the airport. About the potatoes , it would have been better to get a package of crisps from a random supermarket.
Great food! I had the burger and it was cooked perfectly. My mom had the chicken and waffles and it was great too. The milkshake was good and huge! The service was fast and good too.
I highly recommend the hash.
Beautiful pastry platter for end of school year- the staff ate everything! Thank you
A must stop when near by.
Delicious food and excellent service!
Delicious breakfast in Hanover!
Very busy Sunday morning about 940am. Seated at the bar within ten minutes.
Lous is a great place for breakfast or lunch, or for a stop to get pastries, pies, cupcakes, donuts. Everything they make is delicious.
Decent diner. Above average tasting comfort food in a popular (sometimes boisterous) cozy setting. VERY popular for weekend breakfast (regardless of what Google Live states).
Amazing breakfast spot! The food was absolutely delicious, especially the pancakes and bacon. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience even better. Will definitely be back for more! #BreakfastGoals
One of the best diners out there! Great food, great service, and great atmosphere!
Diner in the center of Hanover featuring both counter seating and tables. We came as a party of four on Sunday at lunchtime. The place was full and there was a long line of people waiting. I don t believe they can take a party larger than five. There is street parking out front if you can get it, and parking lots nearby. Staff is friendly and helpful. Dietary restrictions: There are a couple gluten and dairy free options.
Delicious. Wonderful. Friendly staff and consistent food.
I love this place. The staff are great, the food was excellent and the atmosphere is charming. Lots of good options for dining in or taken out. Highly recommend.
Amazing restaurant, love this place. Great food and nice staff. Met the owner he was awesome.
Such a lovely restaurant and bakery. Delicious food - harvest bowl, chicken pesto salad, pancakes were a highlight. Family owned, met the owner who was incredibly nice. Attentive staff, great service.
Generous portions, and great atmosphere! Very friendly staff. Food
THE place in the upper valley to purchase cakes for your special occasion. The strawberries and whipped cream cake is our favorite. Their baked goods, breakfast (smoothie bowl!), and lunch items make it an easy choice when going out with the family.
We recently traveled for a week in the area, and went to Lous for breakfast every day. The service and food were great, and they were amazing with our toddler. 10/10 Parking: Street parking with meters Kid-friendliness: We brought our 1.5 year old here every day for a week. They have booster seats, high chairs, a kids menu, crayons and wiki Stix, and an amazing staff.
Dartmouth staple that never fails to deliver classic breakfast and the best crueler French toast I ve ever had. Fills up fast on weekends
Kid-friendliness: Wikki Stix! Food
As we walked in through the door the friendly host greeted us into the warm environment. All of the food was exceptionally excellent; particularly the pumpkin chocolate muffin. Service was quick and polite, and the old diner feel really put us at home. In review I highly recommend this diner, and hope you have a chance to partake in this work of art.
Great small town breakfast place.
Cozy and fun
The fresh ramp omelate was good, but beyond the aged cheddar, it lacked a bit of flavor.
Awesome experience and delicious food! Always a wait but always worth it.
I came here with a Group of 9 people two days in a row, thats how good this place is. We all came from different states and we all felt this place is amazing! The staff were really nice and friendly. You will love everything on the menu. I had biscuits n gravy the first visit and the 2nd visit. Four other people wanted to try it after I gave high praises and they all loved it too. And the Key Lime pie was the best I ever had!... This place deserves national TV recognition! A New England Top 10 break/lunch dive-in for sure!
Prices are high and students dont care about doing their job apparently their parents give them money so they dont have to work for it It seemed like a fun house which is great atmosphere the seating for 4+ is very tight also but at the end of the day gotta Do your job ... tust me life gets harder from here Parking: Pay to park? ...sure...
Great meal great staff Parking: Great options Food : 5/5 |
Best food from a restaurant and the service was amazing and the atmosphere was kinda of a blast in the past which I like personally so I recommend
Had a yummy Ruben
An iconic and classic staple in Hanover. Ive been visiting for years and Ive never had a bad experience. Ive always gone for breakfast or brunch; there can sometimes be a wait, but its worth it.
California breakfast sandwich is great. Very small. Always a wait when I ve been there. Mercifully three unisex restrooms.
I ordered the cruller breakfast sandwich and it was such a guilty pleasure. So delicious!
It s the best. I expected the diner food I remembered - which was there, but there were also a ton of other really delicious options like an Açaí bowl and the best turkey sandwich I d had in forever. The experience and ambiance is great, the staff are SO kind (even when I bring my kids in), and everything about Lou s these days is just awesome. Kid-friendliness: They give your kids WikiStix and make it so easy to dine in with them. Thanks for understanding, Lou s team!!
Great place for breakfast all day. It is always crowded, but short waiting times. Excellent ice tea.
Great food, great service! My new favorite place! Vegetarian options: Nice variety Food : 5/5 |
Online order is easy, fast, and the food is consistently perfect.
Great breakfast spot. Food is delicious and well prepared.
Great food and amazing servers. My 3 years old the whole glass of water. They were so busy yet didnt seema but annoyed. Will visit again when Im in the area. Visited again in November 2023, will stick to the same review.
EAT THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES!!! Citrus syrup is amazing.
1st visit was this Summer, sat outside, and ate the amazing chicken and waffles and hand a truly fantastic bakery muffin (grilled with butter!) So good we had to come back again this winter! Still just as tasty and the same great experience, sat at the bar to skip the brunch lineup.
Wonderful breakfast/brunch place which is famous with the Hanover locals. Amazing fare, great wait staff, and a cozy dining atmosphere. Didnt get any this time, but the pies looked to die for. Parking: Campus town location. Street parking spaces can be difficult to find during peak times.
Food is VERY good, but the line tends to be VERY long, but in terms of the food quality, the line it worth the wait
Good restaurant
Best restaurant in Hanover. Owners are super hot too. Kid-friendliness: Best restaurant in Hanover!!!! Food : 5/5 |
Awesome place. Always great food! Vegetarian options: Great veggie options Food : 5/5 |
Great breakfast.
Best diner in the upper valley
Great place!
This restaurant has a great 50s diner charm about it. Its definitely cozy. I had the lox and bagel, and it was fantastic. My SIL had the acai bowl and said it was very tasty. The only disappointment was my daughters biscuits and gravy, though it was more of not what shes used to rather than not good. Decent coffee, and they offered to-go lids. The restaurant is in the midst of renovations, so they didnt have a full menu, but they were as accommodating as possible. Vegetarian options: There were lots of vegetarian options, and the restaurant was willing to alter options to be vegetarian. They had oat milk available in place of half and half for my coffee. Parking: The only parking available was paid street parking.
Quite possibly the most amazing chicken noodle soup in all the land Dietary restrictions: Vegan and gluten-free options! Food : 5/5 |
Very friendly staff. Short wait time. Good Coffee. Good food. Fair-Good Price.
Stopped in for coffee and All good Parking: First time there in what ever town I was in ,street parking was tight for a truck , there was a lot around the corner , Just to stop for a coffee was not worth the effort.
Sweet little diner with very pleasant service and a generous selection.
Lovely little lunch counter in Hanover. Our meals were excellent, the service prompt and engaging, the pies heavenly. Would love to go back and try more of the menu.
Sad that its not the same Lous that I went to growing up. Hate that the hash browns are a mixture between McDonalds and Dunkin hash browns. Definitely overpriced for the food
Its a nice place but little pricey for breakfast.
Best corned beef hash ever. Wonderful service. Amazing ambience.
Dietary restrictions: Gluten free, vegan options Food
Lous is a fantastic experience. Because its so good and popular wait time was long on a togo sandwich. Kid-friendliness: Family oriented
Every meal at Lou s is one for the books. Excellent breakfast or lunch with friendly staff that make you feel like part of the family.
The food was phenomenal!! The apple cider was delicious and it was very easy access for pick up. The woman at the register was very nice and very helpful since I hadn t been there before. 10/10 highly highly recommend!!! Dietary restrictions: Gluten free French toast!!
Great coffee, Smokey Garden Special
Lous is very obviously THE place to go in Hanover, NH, for delicious breakfasts, pastries, and lunch. My dad and I came for lunch one day and had some delicious chicken soup...homemade, lots of chicken and noodles. Yum! We came for breakfast the next day. I got the corned beef hash breakfast which was delicious. My dad got eggs, toast, and hash browns which he enjoyed. The staff is on top of everything and very friendly. Their baked goods we learned are baked fresh in-house every day. They have a day and a night baker in fact. The donuts looked to-die-for. I should have gotten one but I was too full. There are huge lines always here, but the counter is first-come-first-served and you likely wont have much of a wait there.
Blueberry muffins are excellent. Service is slow at times so dont go in a hurry but overall it is a very nice establishment and food is great!
Small place but it gets very busy!! Great for a quick breakfast or lunch!
It s a popular diner with a storied history that has been covered in the Wall Street Journal. It has passed through multiple owners and they ve maintained a tradition of excellence while adapting to modern demands of mobile takeout orders. Quick service and turn around time. It is an amazing operation to prepare meals efficiently in the small space of this diner. It s pricey. It s diner food but with healthy and vegetarian options.
Great food Dessert is GREAT.
Visited for lunch. We both enjoyed our food, but the server wasnt super friendly, and it took some time to get the check when we finished dining. Got some baked goods to go and they were delicious! Would definitely come back again.
Morning time gets really busy, but its only about a 10 minute wait to be seated. Service is great and staff is friendly, large and diverse menu.
A lovely small town diner that was extremely busy. The food came out fresh and properly cooked considering. I ordered the Steakhouse bowl and everything tasted great. Fresh meat and quinoa hash base. The flavors all came together great. Would definitely recommend the bowl.
Decent drip coffee. I had the house blend, which is a medium roast. It wasnt bitter at all. They have plenty of baked goods to choose from.
Banger food especially after very little sleep
Its a classic! A Main Street diner with loads of history that also sources many of its ingredients locally. Ive never taken anyone--from the pickiest eater to work-traveler foodie--who hasnt lived Lous. And they ask want to come back on their next visit!!!
Was in town for 2 days at Dartmouth Hitchcock. Ate there on the first day, line was very long but waiting time was less than 10 minutes for a seat. Eggs Benedict was 5/5. Came back the next day. Will come back next time in town.
Lous is a special diner in Hanover. Sure they have the usual breakfast standards, but the quality here is way above average. Be prepared for a line unless you go after the morning rush!
Its an excellent breakfast and lunch restaurant! Service is very prompt and professional. The home cooked food is delicious! Youll be back once you eat here especially for the bakery items. The pastries are so good!
Always a great place to stop for coffee, pasties, and breakfast/lunch meals. Would highly recommend to anyone in the Hanover area for a great place to dine.
We will go out of our way to come to Lou s several times a year. Food, service & staff are always excellent. The atmosphere brings you back to simpler times where everyone is happy. All that really needs to be said is Lou is like you, he enjoys good food too. Parking: Sometimes it s a little difficult to find a parking spot but it sure is well worth the hunt. Kid-friendliness: Lou s is very family friendly.
zz
Our favorite spot in the Hanover area! Always delicious. Great service.
Best crullers
I came here recently and will preface by saying this place is currently going through a renovation process for their kitchen. It is noticeable as you walk in and see them cooking at (what once was) the counter seating and have all their supplies laid out as you are waiting in line to be seated. I really do believe they should be closed while these renovations are happening. The food feels rushed and it can t be sanitary with everything out in the open and relying heavily on the microwave. My waffle was raw and the eggs were just meh . The only redeeming item was the muffin, everything else got me sick. I would love to try this place again when they are fully operational as I hope this was just a one off.
Wonderful fresh and wholesome food! The team is friendly and welcoming. And the apple pie is outstanding!!! Tons of apples and a firm crust. Yum
Cute dinner with friendly staff. Even with their current kitchen renovations the food is still good and the atmosphere is still cozy. Plus they have great gluten free muffins from the bakery!
