2357 Whitesburg Dr, Huntsville, AL 35801, United States
Low-key restaurant for schnitzels, sausages & other German classics, along with imported beer.
I try to make a point to visit every time I'm passing through Huntsville! Staff has always been great as is the food. I've tried a variety of entrees and never found something I didn't enjoy. The beer is always cold and I love the selection.
My mother was in Germany for 9 years and loves German food. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was also amazing and so was our server! Loved everything about this place and it made my mother so happy!
We stopped in for a quick dinner and left wanting to have had quite a long dinner. The food is excellent! We had the asparagus wrapped in black forest ham, the goulash and cream of asparagus soups, and a sampler platter of sausages. You CAN'T get food or service of this quality at the many chains that dot the area. Hildegard's is unique, inviting, and knows how to take care of their clientele. We will definitely come back.
We out to dinner with our family of four on Tuesday night. The host was very accommodating to us with our young kids. We all had schnitzels and enough for left overs. The Chicken Berlin Schnitzel with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. 😋
Oh man, this place is super authentic. The food was quick to come out and was the perfect temperature. Our waiter was super nice. The cheesecake was absolutely freaking amazing. I could have eaten it until I went into a diabetic coma. Tasted like my grandmother was in the back cooking.
how do I rate a place 10/5??? I got bier brats and kasespatzel and mashed potatoes with gravy and everything was bursting with flavor. the brats were juicy but not overly greasy, and had been finished off over a fire grill. my gf got a mushroom schnitzel and pan fried potatoes with asparagus and it too was done up excellently. when you get a schnitzel here you can hear it from the kitchen as they pound it flat... authentic!
Wanted something different on a business trip so we selected Hildegard’s. We were all VERY impressed! The food was outstanding! We sampled several of the appetizers: Pretzel & Beer Cheese, Asparagus Rolls, Goulash, and Kabob. All of it was great! I got the Bavarian Schnitzel and simple wow! It was so good, tender, and flavorful! I had the fried potatoes and kaespaetzel (german pasta salad) which were both delicious. The food all of my other coworkers had was equally good. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for some German food or just something different!
This is a wonderful cozy German restaurant. Food was good and delicious. Beer was cold , tasty and inexpensive. Staff were super friendly and attentive. Parking is alittle confusing as they share spots with other stores. There is a kids menu and my children enjoyed it.
Six for dinner all german danish descent of which 4 are from out of state! Food was more than a big hit! Authentic ingredients and super service! The night was a big hit.
If I could rate this zero I would. As someone who grew up in Germany, I expected more from a restaurant that boasts authenticity. I ordered the Zigeuner schnitzel, and it was absolutely horrendous. The sauce was so salty it was in edible. The schnitzel that was ordered was as hard as a rock, cold, and lacked any type of moisture. The potato salad was not potato salad made the German way it was simply potatoes in a bowl with no sauce at all. There was not the familiar vinegar added at all to with only bits of bacon. When advising the waitstaff that my food was inedible, they advised that they could not comp the meal, but offered me a piece of cake. I ordered the Black Forest Cake. It was beyond moist. Soaking even.
Great little German restaurant. I love finishing off dinner with one of their delicious desserts.
What can I say other than this being a great restaurant? The dishes are delicious, and the service is always amazing.
Absolutely amazing and authentic schnitzel. The kase Spatzle was fabulous. Our server was able to explain an expert detail, the menu, as well as the wine list. Enjoyable evening at Hildegard s!
Good german beers, Chicken Schnitzel was OK, red cabbage was great, sausage kabob was great, pretzel was ok.
Amazing service
The first time to have German food in Alabama, it was wonderful
I learned to cook!
The loveliest food with the loveliest people. I cannot recommend this place enough.
Great local joint for authentic German fare and beer selections. Check out the Schlatteplatte and pork mushroom schnitzel.
Good bread. Food is worth the wait- schnitzel was crispy, mushroom sauce had depth, great on their spatzle! Loved sitting outside.
A true Huntsville institution. They accommodated my large, last minute group without so much as a raised eyebrow. Food took a bit long to come out, but given how many of us piled in, it was quite understandable and everyone enjoyed the dishes. Hildegards is definitely high on the recommended list for anyone who comes to Huntsville.
The Saltiest Jägerschnitzel Ever Made I recently had the unfortunate experience of trying what I can only describe as the saltiest Jägerschnitzel ever made. From the first bite, it was clear that something had gone terribly wrong in the kitchen. The tender pork cutlet, which should have been the highlight of the dish, was completely overshadowed by an overpowering amount of salt. The rich, creamy mushroom sauce a staple of this classic dish was rendered inedible, as it too seemed to have absorbed this absurd level of seasoning. The usual earthy flavors of the mushrooms and the tang of the sauce were nowhere to be found, lost in a sea of salt. I know it wasn t just me because another couple that had the same dish had the same complaints. In summary, if youre looking for a dish that will leave your taste buds craving water for days, this Jägerschnitzel is for you. Otherwise, Id suggest steering clear and hoping for a less aggressively seasoned version next time. I will add that service was exceptional.
The parking lot here is very small and this restaurant gets busy even on weeknights. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. I ordered takeout, my rahm phils was pretty good but came with no mushrooms. I saw in the pictures there are mushrooms so not sure why I didn t get any. Their cream sauce also tasted like jarred Alfredo. The red cabbage hit me in the face with way too much vinegar. Wasn t expecting it and didn t quite like it. The fried potatoes were pretty good but I prefer boiled. Overall, I didn t think this meal was worth the $30 I was charged. Quite frankly the math isn t math-ing when the menu lists this meal as under $20 so even with tax, seems I was overcharged for the one takeout order. I didn t really notice the discrepancy until I got home and don t care enough to call and complain Restaurant is cute but dated. Parking: One way parking lot. Very tight. Bring a small vehicle
Great food and service
We couldnt decide between two different appetizers and the waitress gave us a great recommendation (sausage kebobs). My husband couldnt decide on what he wanted and she gave great options. He had the schnitzel Bavarian and is looking forward to his leftovers. I had the chicken Berlin and absolutely loved it. It wasnt as big as his, but was wonderfully filling. We split a piece of Black Forest cake and it was amazing!
They were gracious enough to give us a table without a reservation. The desserts were wonderful. Our waiter was terrible. He was rude, questioned our food choices and brought flat beer and not what was ordered. He made the whole table feel very unwelcome. I had to ask another waiter for our desserts to go. We will choose different next time.
Food not quite as good as in the past.
It took over an hour to get our food. Other tables that arrived 30 minutes after us received their food before us, and they ordered the SAME entrees.
I couldn t imagine how this place has 4.6 stars without being extremely drunk on their beer. I came all the way from Nashville, only to waste two hours of my time. We waited an hour and 10 minute for subpar schnitzel and burnt potatoes. Our bierbrat was missing and the potato salad was just diced potaoes in a bowl of vinegar. Tables that arrived 30 minutes after us received their food, the same entres we had ordered, within 10-20 minutes. Our waitress continually told us that our food would be out soon without further explanation. One of the nearby tables had ordered desert before our food came out. We were offered a free slice of cake as compensation for our wasted time.
Not their best day Good over cooked and dry Food
Everything we tried was great.
Very good food! Reminds me of Germany.
Great place!!
It was terrible service and they kept giving excuses why the appetizer (sausage kabob) came out after 1 hour! She gave an excuse about the how the table behind of us had come in after us got dinner entrees before our appetizer. She said it was because they ordered as soon as they sat down. However we ordered appetizer same time we ordered our drinks! Plus my asparagus were burned! I didn t want her to fix it because that probably would ve taken another one or two hours!
This place is fantastic as a military member and brat I have lived all over the place and have rarely found good German food and to find great German food was an absolute blessing Parking: Small lot shared with other store each with restricted parking Wheelchair accessibility: Simple and easy ramped access
Great German restaurant. We really enjoyed it and will go again.
Best restaurant in town. Schnitzel is always a good choice, along with the cucumber salad, and a beer. If you love German food this is the place for you.
Absolutely amazing food it was like we were actually in Germany loved it.
Fabulous & authentic German food and bier!
Very great experience great food great choices of beer little girl named Jessica was a great waitress good timing not a long way
As a German, I can tell you that this does not taste like German food. The menu also did not offer many options. The schnitzel is first of all was way too thin and it has a really weird breading. It smelt very unpleasant as well. I had the mushroom schnitzel and it was very bland and barely tasted like anything other than being extremely dry. The mushrooms and onions did not compliment the dish without any sauce that originally comes with it. I also ordered German potato salad which did not end being German at all? German potato salad contains mayonnaise not vinegar and is also not served warm. The only side dish that was slightly accurate was the Rotkohl (red cabbage) but I am assuming that it came out of an already processed jar. I did not finish my food and I felt nauseous afterwards. I did not have any issues with my server or the host.
Classic German dishes- brats schnitzels, beers and wines.. Nice European cafe feel. Great service dining in. Tucked in parking lot next to purple peanut boutique. Food
Amazing, authentic german food. Katie is a great waitress, and they have great beers on tap. Can t go wrong here.
This place is great! The Jägerschnitzel is out of this world! Everyone should try this and I will definitely be back.
The food is absolutely delicious and has very generous portion sizes. The service is fantastic, Ive never had a problem during many visits. Fantastic schnitzel, kase spaetzle, and pan fried potatoes. Parking: Not many spots available usually.
Got cakes. They were good. Service was also good, although that may have been because they were amused that we came in for cakes Food : 5/5
The food was very good with great atmosphere. But it wasnt as good as the last time I was there a couple of years ago. Still, I give it 5 stars.
We ate here for an early Valentines. I really enjoyed the bread and pan fried potatoes. The Berlin and potato salad was good as well. Definitely recommend!!
The food tastes quite good and seems to be authentic. The entrees are filling, so we didnt get to try dessert. Service was great. Parking can be a challenge, but getting there early helps. Parking: The traffic flow is awkward and several businesses use the same parking lot. Entering via Whitesburg and exiting via California seems to work best.
Ordered 2 whole Black Forest cakes for my German Mother s 97 th birthday ! They were gorgeous and so delicious! Would order again!
The food was excellent, but I recommend making reservations. We arrived at peak hour, but the rest of the experience made the wait worthwhile.
I blame myself for ordering out and not eating in, but not exactly what I was expecting. Exceptional staff and great ambiance inside. Will definitely try again when in Huntsville, AL.
We hadn t been here in a long time. I m so glad we decided to visit again! The atmosphere is great, the service was great, and the food was delicious! Parking: There are plenty of parking spaces Wheelchair accessibility: There are no steps entering into the restaurant
2 of us went for dinner on a busy Fri evening. Charming restaurant with great service. They were out of spatzle. We both ordered the Weiner schnitzel with green beans, kraut, red cabbage, and german potato salad. The red cabbage and potato salad were good. The green beans seemed to be an afterthought as they were parsley cooked. The schnitzels were not as crisp as I am used to and were a little underwhelming. Will give the place another shot as the atmosphere and service are very good.
Great food, cold beer. Had the pork with cream mushroom gravy as entre. Spicy goulash soup and creamy cucumber salad appetizer . Yuuuum. Brought half of it home in to go box. Lemon cake desert also in go box. No way to eat it now have to wait several hours but I know it will be delicious. Only drawback is the parking if youre not familiar can be a pain.
As close to authentic as I have tasted since my time in Europe.
Love this place! Best German food in Huntsville. Aaron always provides great service! Always looking forward to when my wife says were going to Hildegards.
Great food, great atmosphere, and great service.
Didnt expect the wait later on a Saturday night. The food was all exceptional. Loved the pretzel, meatloaf, and stroganoff. If I lived closer I could see myself eating here semi-regularly.
What a GEM of a find! This is a super cute little German Restaurant that nails it. I am of German descent and my Oma would really enjoy this place. Great food! A wonderful staff! AND dessert to DIE for! Definitely a must if you are in the Huntsville area. Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair accessible
The variety bread basket was an unexpected treat at the beginning of the meal. The asparagus soup was wonderful. We sent it back as not initially served hot, but once thoroughly heated, it was the best soup I ve had in a long time. It s a thin cream soup versus thick-so good/fresh! The German combo dinner entree was so very tasty! We got to sample a bit of schnitzel, spatzal pasta, sausage and sauerkraut. It was a delightful dinner washed down with a stein of German tap beer! We shall return in the future to try more menu items! Great first visit!
This is a regular spot for us. I really like the chicken schnitzel. I get it with the brown gravy and mushrooms. Perfect! Don t forget the fried potatoes and of course a cold one! If you like liver and onions, I was told it is really good as well.
Elegant food in a casual ambience. I had the Chicken Berlin with the hot potato salad. Substantial without the over-full feeling one might expect after a rich meal. The wait staff make you feel at home. Excellent!
Great Food, small local place, will go back! Great service.
After moving to the midwest 10 years ago, I finally made it back to Huntsville and was able to revisit a lot of places. I can now confirm, once again, that Hildegards is the best German restaurant in Huntsville. As a German native I am happy to see that this is still the most authentic German restaurant. Everyone in my party thoroughly enjiyed their food. They had my favorite - the Rahm pils schnitzel, and it was a delicious and huge portion. The red cabbage had just the right sour bite and I really enjoyed the yogurt cucumber salad. I really dont think you can go wrong with any dish you order here. Im looking forward to many more visits now that I live down south once again.
Small establishment with reasonably priced German food. Good selection of beers and most of the traditional Schnitzels and sausages offered. Parking is a bit tight.
Good German restaurant.
Waitress was fantastic
Overall, It was ok for the price. The food came out quickly. The free bread that they bring is fantastic. The service was good and above average. Parking: Found a spot easily right next to the building. Kid-friendliness: No one minded that kids were present. There arent kids choices on the menu that I noticed. They dont offer kids activities like coloring crayons, etc. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy to get into the building with a wheelchair as ots on the ground level and there arent curbs or obstructions
Food great. Service not so.
The best Jägerschnitzel we have had in the US. We will definitely be back. The food was fresh, the service was great.
I have lived in nine countries. Visited Germany many times. Hildegards was at the top! The taste and quality of the food was absolutely excellent. The service was superior, as was the spirits and wine. I highly recommend this restaurant, and will certainly return next time were in Huntsville. Parking: Ample and easy access.
We had a large group. It was right before Thanksgiving. All of the dishes were well presented. The food was hot and flavorful. From brats to the schnitzels, not to mention the huge cake serving and great flavor and texture. Good selection of German brews, and decently priced. The dishes are moderately priced. Aaron provided great table service, and the hostess is friendly and helps the staff. Dietary restrictions: Gluten Free menu available. Parking: Parking spaces are tight, like for compact cars.
Really delicious food. Nice selection of German beer and wine. Friendly staff
The food was incredible, and the staff were friendly and hard working. The fact that the food was so good and the dining room is so small means there was a substantial wait. Without a reservation I expect to wait for good food. There were several parties with reservations that were waiting upwards of 30 minutes, and that is frustrating. The bathroom door kept getting stuck and the staff had to basically kick it down a few times. If youre in the area make reservations for an early dinner and you should have a good experience. Later in the evening is when the wait times start climbing.
We are a Mixed German Family living locally. We decided to try Hildegard s for the first time. It s the last German themed restaurant we ve yet to try in Huntsville. Wait staff was very friendly and running around everywhere but my fears turned into a reality when I realized they were under staffed. We waited over an hour for our food while many tables that came in after us had already gotten their food and left. The food was not too bad but nothing I would label as authentic. The German potato salad I believe is what the menu calls it was simply sliced thick sliced potatoes in a bath of vinegar with back and a few unions it was more of a vinaigrette soup with Potato. The Spatzle was very over cooked to where it lost it s shape and just looked like mush. The restaurant itself was cozy but it hasn t seen any updates in 20 years from the looks of it. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. I feel bad for the staff seems like Management was absent that day. The waitress was very nice and very apologetic for the over 1 hour wait. I would reevaluate the word Authentic.
I will give the five stars on the taste on the food. However, we ordered dessert to go, the german chocolate cake and the blueberry cheesecake. We did not check the order before we left and when we got home we discovered that the german chocolate cake was just chocolate cake and the blueberry cheesecake looked like they had scraped the dregs off the plate into a to-go box. They both tasted good, but not what we expected for what we paid
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. It is well lit and clean. The staff are amazing and the food we enjoyed, we really liked, the mushroom gravy for one. However, we are personally fans of Ole Heidelberg more. Their menu and recipes are more consistent with what I grew up with when German food was made or served.
We visited this restaurant for the first time with family tonight. Thursday, March 16. We had 5:30 reservations which we made on Tuesday for 8. The beets and potato salad were too vinegary, was not overly impressed with the Bavarian dish. The first thing I noticed on the menu was we had a 90 minute time! Had I known this, I would never have suggested we go here. We all were from out of town and met here. At 6:40, we were asked to leave so they could prepare the table for the next reservation. We were chatting and done with our main meal, contemplating to have desert and another beer. We spent approximately $30 per person as well. I guess our 70 minutes was up, tho, the menu said we had 90 minutes. I have never ever been to a restaurant where my time was limited. We were not loud or boisterous and we had to teens with us. I will not recommend this place or will I be back. Parking was terrible, twice someone almost hit us backing out of their spot.
when we got to the restaurant, we were seated right away. 3to 4 minutes later our waiter took our drink order, then after bringing our drinks he took our food order. about 20 minutes later we got our food. Everyone liked there food. we got there at 530 was done eat at 640 the water asked if we wanted dessert to which we said yes but we wanted it to go. He returned with our dessert then went and got our check and I paid it this was at 650 no sooner then he walked away a gentleman came to our table and asked us to leave because there was another group waiting for our table. So rude, it state that there is a 90 minutes limit so we still had at 10 minutes to go. Our Bill was over $265 you would think he would not have been so Rude and had given us our full 90 minutes. food was good waiter was good but eat and get out.
I was really looking forward to trying it and was added on the waitlist for 35 min. At the end of the wait I was basically informed that they werent going to seat us because they ran out of food. I arrived around 6:15ish and by 7 I had to look for another place to eat.
I went to your restaurant today with family. We ordered soup, salad and main course. Main course came first plates had each a knife in it to cut the meat. Had to wait for a waitress to come back and ask her if we could get forks. She brought 3 forks and layed them on the table. Ok, kinda strange. Our soup came late in between the main course. My cucumber salad came at almost the end of the meal. Didnt get any napkins, had to asked twice to get some. Finally got them with the carry out boxes. The family that came in after us received their meal with silverware and napkins wrap together. Was our service bad because my son and grandson are by-racial??? The food was absolutely wonderful. Ive been coming to your restaurant many times and never had that experience before. I still tipped the waitress $10,which she really didnt deserve, but I also know she makes most of her money on tips!
Delicious, authentic German food. The frosty mugs of cold draft German beer hit the spot!
Loved Date Night special!
Little quaint German restaurant. The service was awesome and the beer was great. I ordered Hildegards Sampler. The Geschnetzeltes and Spatzle was great. The Chicken Schnitzel was over cooked and dry. The Polish and Kraut was weisswurst that was grilled and canned sourkraut. The potato salad was made with thick slices of potatoes and was sweet. I am used to German potato salad with the potatoes sliced thin having a sour taste not sweet. Parking: Small parking spaces.
A unique dining experience in so many ways! The service and food was excellent. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting. The menu is filled with authentic cultural delights found so seldom that I almost forgot how delicious German food is! Our memories were reminded with every bight! Starting with complimentary freshly baked bread and ending with an ample slice of cake that my beautiful bride said was the best shes ever tasted. The entrees were cooked to perfection and were rich with flavor beyond our expectations. My only wish is that Hildegards was a member of Tradebank of Huntsville, so that we (and the 300 plus members of our business owner association) could afford to dine here more often. Vegetarian options: Two of our party enjoyed vegetarian choices and said their food was wonderful. Parking: Plenty of free, off-street parking.
Went back a second time. Would recommend them. Service was still slower than expected, but overall the food and prices make it worth it. Food was great, prices were good. Service was just a little slow to take orders.
We were visiting Huntsville and excited to have some authentic German food. On a Saturday night they were busy, but no excuse for bad service, asked for water... didnt get any, asked for salad before dinner and it was forgotten, asked for another round of drinks and only got one. The food was cool, especially the potatoes. The spätzle were soggy and the schnitzels overcooked. No sign of an owner/manager, just a very young staff that were not able to handle their tables. Definitely not the good German food we were hoping for.
Everything was excellent, great food and service. I was stationed in Germany when I was in the Army and the food here is as good as any that I had in Germany.
Best German food in Alabama
Fantastic flavorful authentic great service
Definitely a must try place. The food was awesome and the German beer was really good. Kid-friendliness: Family atmosphere Wheelchair accessibility: Handicap parking right at the front door. Plenty of room for wheelchair.
First time here...food was amazing. Waitress was so nice and helpful. The black forest cake was delicious.
Busy time after UAH graduation so service a bit slow but courteous. Food all rated delicious. Extensive German beers.
A true German restaurant with awesome food, beer and service. Tucked away in a corner but easy to get to, this little place serves wonderful authentic German cuisine. Highly recommend going here. Way better than the pretentious rude place I reviewed in KC, MO. This is the real deal.
Great German food I highly recommend!!!
We came to Hildegards based upon a Google listing and a recommendation from some friends who are familiar with the area. Wow what an experience!!! This was undoubtedly the most authentic and best German meal we have ever experienced!!! Every dish was prepared in an authentic and excellent preparation. The food, service and atmosphere are excellent. We will most assuredly dine here again the next time we are in town .
Jessica was a wonderful server. The soup was cold but she took care of it and made it right. First time there will go back
The food was great, but how it compares to the real deal, I cant say. We liked it. Its a quiet, clean place, and the staff are helpful and friendly.
The BEST German food that we have had since we left Germany (30+years ago). The Cucumber salad with the vinegrette was so genuine, and super delicious and refreshing. Portions are extremely generous. This is a MUST visit place, anytime we are in/near Huntsville.
Authentic German food. Just like I remember it when I was soldier there back in 1977-1980.
Kate was our waitress and she was amazing! They make everything from scratch and it s extremely fresh, which is the reason they probably ran out of food. We are from out of town and this was the best restaurant. We plan on eating our dinner here every night.
Food was great. I had the gypsy schnitzel spicy cream sauce with bell peppers over the chicken. So good! Coconut layer cake dessert.
Simply awesome!!! Will definitely go back. The food was fabulous and the service spectator.
Authentic German food. Perhaps the largest Jager schnitzel Ive ever had. A bit of a bummer that they were out of their German slaw because it is so good.
Enjoyed the pork schnitzeland red cabbage. Mmmmm. Not crowded. Had friends with us we hadnt seen for twenty years. All enjoyed the food.
Used to love this place. Food has slipped a little and prices have quadrupled. Used to get a good full 32oz beer glass for 8 dollars, now its 12 dollar for an 8oz warstiener. Cucumber salad is 8 pieces of cucumber... I guess things are too expensive for me these days. Less quality for more price all around. Edit: it was the right place. Maybe we caught you guys on a bad night, we also waited well over an hour for our food to come out. We arrived at 630 and left around 830.
Hildegard reminded me of sitting around my grandfathers dinner table. It was like that scene from ratatouille being transported to my childhood. The presentation was great. We ate asparagus soup, schnitzel, potato bacon salad vinaigrette, brats, spaetzle, and apple strudel. The service was top notch and the owner came out to greet us. I m in love.
The owner led us to our table and chatted with us for a min. She answered our questions about the menu. Then she introduced our server and told her about what we were looking for on the menu. The server was friendly while taking our order. The food was hot and absolutely delicious when it was served. It does take time for the cooks to prepare but its because the food is freshly prepared. Well worth the wait! The servings were very large. We plan to visit again when we return to Huntsville Al. PS: their noodles are made in house & very good.
The previous times we have been here the food has been great. Tonight it wasnt as good. We were served a very small portion of spaetzle, which was fine because it was cold and bland. The other items were just ok. Service was good and staff was friendly. Hoping this was just a one-off and still plan to go back again.
I love German food and had a great experience here
They have good schnitzel and I love their red cabbage! They have a good selection of draft beers.
Amazing food and incredible service! Will definitely come back next time I visit Huntsville!
Food was good overall, spaetzle and gravy was delicious as was the fried potatoes. Absolutely loved the bread and butter. Beer selection was good and fit the meal. Sausages were good overall, knackwurst was a little dry, oddly. Brat and Polish were solid. Waitress was extremely helpful and friendly. Prices were good overall.
Went for dinner while visiting extended family last week. The restaurant was fairly busy on a weekday. The food was good and tasty, but I had to wait for a whole hour before it was served. I can understand the kitchen gets busy, but at the same time, another basket of bread would have been much appreciated. When the food finally arrived, it was cold and a little salty, which killed the remaining appetite that was left after waiting for so long. Seemed like the food was sitting on the counter for a while before it was served. I noticed that customers who came in after us were served food and had left while we were still sitting there. Our server looked like she was in a hurry to get rid of us as she asked if she could bring the check while we were discussing for a dessert. We placed our order for dessert and we realized it was a mistake because that took almost another half hour before it was served and to make matters worse we were told that one of the dessert we ordered was not even available. It was almost closing time when we left the restaurant. The entire dinner experience was very lengthy and exhausting. Went to have a good time but left very disappointed. I might recommend it to someone but will make sure to let them know to have a light snack before going for dinner.
Ordered 2 different meals, but were the same thing only 1 had cheese. Bread and fried potatoes were good. Pork schnitzel etc was ok but lacked flavor
Absolutely FANTASTIC food, service and beer. Such a great experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking for authentic German food. Also a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation.
Great German food with many choices to choose from. Appetizers are excellent as well. Large wine selection with unique German wines.
I got the Bavarian Schnitzel. I had read that so many people liked it, but I was disappointed. Despite having gravy and mushrooms, it was quite bland. No amount of salt or pepper could bring any flavor to the dish.
Katie was our amazing waitress. Knowledge and very friendly.
We were from out of town and wanted something new. The food was great and service was top notch.
Having traveled around the world, German cuisine is always a challenge to find quality outside of Germany, However, this place brought back the flavors and perfectly cooked meals.
Food quality gone down hill. Worst meal since across from the Frankfurt Zoo.
I prefer Hildegards. The food is delicious!
Excellent food and relaxed atmosphere. Food was delicious and service was friendly. Unfortunately I was too full from the main course for dessert. The portions are hearty. Found a new favorite restaurant.
It s a great German restaurant. The food was delicious. The service was on point and staff was so accommodating. Support gems like this one.
I love German food, but they also have super great liver & onions! Portions are large so you definitely wont go hungry!
I didnt leave a real review when I posted before Amy! :) While we were visiting Huntsville we had heard and read about this great little German restaurant. We found it in a non descript older strip mall next to a photo shop that still does film! ( I digress). The wait wasnt too long and the food was well worth the wait. We got the combination platter that had chicken schnitzel, polish sausage, a different kind of spaetzl stroganoff called Hunter unlike anything we had before, with sides of red cabbage and German potato salad which were incredible!
Huge portions, good price, little bit of a wait for a table and a little wait for the food after ordering. But this is excellent an place to eat.
Service was amazing, and so was the food!
We would love to try this place but have never managed to catch them open. Have they opened up after repairs yet? I would love to know their hours.
I received a gift card for our wedding anniversary and we were pleasantly surprised by the food and service here. This is one of our new top spots to eat and have dessert/drinks. We ordered a huge platter to share which included chicken schnitzel, spatzel, polish sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and stroganoff. We also had wine and Black Forest cake. The chicken was deliciously thin and crispy, the sausage was juicy and flavorful, the potatoes were just the right amount of creamy. The atmosphere was friendly and casual, our server answered every question we had and even suggested his favorite dishes. We have nothing but great things to say. Definitely worth a try and we can t wait to come back!
Awesome little hole in the wall restaurant. Didnt look like much from the outside, but the food was tremendous. Service was outstanding. If I lived in this area, this would be a weekly destination.
As a born and raised German, I can attest that the food is definitely authentic. I felt right at home the first time I went there. Beer selection is very good, and you have to try the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. 10/10
This place is awesome if you want legit good German food. The beer is cold, the food is delicious.
food is always good here. and lots of food, almost always need a to-go bag. The closest thing to being back in the Bavarian state of Germany without having to buy a plane ticket.
Meh. Not terrible as I cant say anything bad but not the best German food in town. I wouldnt avoid this place if convenient.
The only saving grace here was the pan friend potatoes. They were actually really good. Otherwise, having just been to Germany and ordering Scnitzel there on 4 separate occasions and ALL of them were good this place s was disgusting. Gravy does NOT go on real Schnitzel. Also, it was rubbery and horribly seasoned with no lemons in sight. Also, German sauerkraut is sweet and theirs tasted like store bought from a can. Also, wayyy too many nuts in the apple strudel. Long story short, this isn t good German food an no idea why the rating is so high
Great food, service and beer. We didnt have dessert, but desserts are one thing they are known for. Huge cakes.
Amazing food, amazing service from our waitress Jessica. Schnitzel was perfect, very flavorful. Peanut butter cheese cake is a must try, it was delicious.
I cant speak highly enough about the food and service here. Its been awhile since my visit to Germany but the foods and smells reminded me of my visit years ago. The presentation and quality of food is authentic as you can get. The only downside is the number of tables so you will do well to make a reservation so you dont get disappointed by an hour wait.
This little German restaurant is worth the search. One of the best in Huntsville. Food : 5/5
The food was delicious! My husband and I wanted some German food because we both love bratwurst. That s exactly what we ordered and we were not disappointed. Everything tasted so homemade and so delicious! Some of the best beer we ve had as well. Customer service was awesome, I might add. I only wish we had a place like this where we live!
Had an amazing waiter and even better food. Note dont expect your brauts to cooler on a bun. That being said the fried potatoes, sauerkraut, bratwurst, spicy goulash soup, and the lemon cake were all amazing. Or lunch started with bread and beer. There was a sweet bread that was the greatest of the bunch but all tasted delicious. The beer although I dont remeber the name, I will always remember the flavor. It was light in feel but heavy in flavor. Everything was cooked well and traditionally, as far as I know. Oh and keep in mind the menu is short, so the pressure of a hundred options is not here. Definitely a place I will be suggesting to visit and will be returning to. Parking: The parking is shared between a few businesses. And it is an odd shaped parking lot. When we got there it was easy to park but on leaving we saw parking can fill quickly. Worse case may need to park on the street next to the resident.
Gem of Huntsville!
Hildegard s German Cuisine 2357 Whitesburg Drive SE C Huntsville, Alabama 35801 While visiting Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville, we decided to try one of the three German restaurants advertised - we picked the one with the best reviews so our expectations were high going in. Difficult to go against all the wonderful comments we read, but we gotta mention while the food was fair, the hospitality was exceptional. Our Servers and Hostesses were so friendly and attentive one could overlook the quality of the food and still have a pleasant dining experience at Hildegards . Granted, we came in on an off day - not the traditional Friday, Saturday crowd and the restaurant was about one-third full. Menu looked great with lots of German food options and the beer selection decent. We ended up ordering traditional German meals - the Jaeger Schnitzels and the Corden Bleu. The Jaeger Schnitzels were tender; however the thick brown gravy with mushrooms was super salty, our consensus was the mushrooms were probably canned and the gravy possibly some kind of pre-made package. You definitely couldn t complain about the portions - the schnitzels are about as big as the dinner plate. The Cucumber Salads was tasty and flavorful. On the other side of the table, the Veal Cordon Bleu - Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese, with Red Cabbage and Pan Fired Potatoes. The breaded veal tasted as though it had been sitting for awhile in the warmer - sides were soggy and the veal a bit chewy. I m not a cook, but my guess is it was pre-made earlier in the evening and sitting in a pan waiting for someone to order. In actuality, both schnitzels seemed pan fried, but had the texture and presentation as though they were not freshly made with our order and had been in chaffing dishes or sitting in a warmer. For dessert, we had the Black Forest Cake and without a doubt - this was the hit of the evening for us. That, and the Bitburger Radlers beers were awesome. Honestly, we d come back - possibly after we tried the other German restaurants in the Huntsville area. Atmosphere and the friendly people working in the front of the house were super. Food was alright - not the best we ve had at other German restaurants, but all things considered we enjoyed the visit.
Food is very good and very authentic, Sheetz about 30 people so you might want to get reservations
This was somehow my first time at a German restaurant and everything was incredible (Service, food, beer, etc.)
Bueno
This place is always great. As often as I can I stop in
This is a charming place if you dont look too hard. The food is good, unfortunately, they stopped serving sandwiches, which is what I wanted when I decided to go. They used to have great sandwiches. They also stopped serving fries, also a favorite. Theyve also stopped serving lunch. What they do serve is good though, just keep in mind the menu is limited.
Excellent German food. Any of the schnitzel choices are very good. Very generous servings. Very good service. Kind of tucked away near end of small strip of shops so you need to know where it is or youre liable to drive past it.
Great food! Great service, cozy cottage atmosphere, and they had the beer I liked! (Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel) Parking: Tiny shared parking lot
Always fantastic food and service.
First time here. Had the Hildegarde sampler, husband had the veal cordon bleu. Both meals were delicious. Very good selection of German beers. Service was very good will definitely be back.
Been here a few times. The food is almost always great. Theres usually a wait. Even after being seated, the servers are spread thin, so dont expect a lot of interaction before or after the order is taken. Your server might not even be the one bringing out your food. After that, getting your check seems to be something that happens on their schedule, not yours. I wonder if the reason theyre so busy is because there just arent enough servers to wait tables (hire more help). Theyre always nice, though, so that helps. Cakes are okay. The beer selections good, when they dont run out of your favorite.
Love the food and beer selections here!
Such a warm and welcoming staff!! Good food, service was perfect! We brought our German foreign exchange student and he enjoyed it!
Your 1000 Island Dressing was out of this world. Now Im craving it!! Also, loved the pan fried potatoes.
Wonderful food, very consistent, entree and sides are fabulous.
I wish I can give it less than one star. Ate there with my wife we both got food poisoning. Never going there. They should clean that place.
The food was really good, homemade desserts, and great service.
Weinerschnitzel was excellent as was the cordon bleu. German potato salad lukewarm and very vinegary to me, and mostly sauce with little potato. An extra side of sauerkraut was $4.79! (You can buy a jar of decent sauerkraut locally for less than 2.00) Cake slices (both the German chocolate and white chocolate raspberry) paper-thin and dry. Not worth the price. Parking: Not much space and difficult to maneuver.
Excellent food. The service was good. A great experience.
Was really looking forward to the liver and onions but they were out But the meatloaf didnt disappoint Food
I ve eaten here a couple times with friends that wanted German food, and I can t recommend. Food was dry and unappetizing both times.
Food was alright, service was great, and the atmosphere was nice. It is so overpriced for the quality of the food. I thought that maybe I didnt like German food. But other German places taste much better for less. Id only recommend this place for their dessert. The cheesecakes they have are absolutely amazing and worth going just for a slice. The rest of their food was meh.
Extremely well executed German food. Red cabbage and spaetzle were great! Everything was prepared just right and we all left with very full bellys!
What a quaint place and great German food. Nice experience!
Great beer and food options. Very reasonable prices. Definitely recommend.
Great food!
The food here was pretty good. Our group went during the lunch rush so getting our order out took a reasonably extended amount of time. The service was less friendly than expected, but not rude. Prices were ok. All in all a good experience and happy to return.
Yum. Try it!
I was in the mood for something different so why not real German food. Had a German beer on happy hour, schnitzel, red cabbage, Spätzle and a bread basket. Beer was delicious. Nice variety of breads. Schnitzel was well pounded thin and crisp. Red cabbage was vinegary to me but good. It s a cute place made up Of small rooms perfect for a date. Located in a small office area. I was there early otherwise you would need a reservation. Sylvia was a great wait staff! Check it out!
Very meh
The food doesnt taste like German food but was still very tasty. The restaurant could use a new ceiling, everything would look better Parking: There are few free seats in front of the restaurant
Love this place! Waitress was awesome! Food as always was great!
Hildegards does German right. Best schnitzel in the huntsville area. I recommend Hildegards over any other German restaurant for authenticity, price quality and service.
Great service, authentic, Im not a big German food person but its a great place for lunch. I recommend.
The meatloaf, German potato salad, and cucumber salad was amazing! Its a lot of food so bring your appetite. My kids had goulash and loved it! It was much like what they are when we visited Germany. Service was perfect as well. Grabbed a slice of coconut cake to have at home after some of this wonder meal digests.
We had a group of 9 for lunch. Our server Cody was excellent (and he has a great radio voice). We started with 3 pretzels with beer cheese and good mustard. It was perfect for 9 of us. Most of us got bratwurst or schnitzel. The warm potato salad was very yummy. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We finished with German chocolate cake (not worth the calories) and coconut cake (outstanding!)
