Area stalwart with country-cozy decor & a menu of traditional German entrees, sandwiches & sides.
We visited today for our Anniversary and Cindy made our visit amazing. She was pleasant to be around and seemed like she actually enjoyed her work, hard to find d these days. She went above the call of her duties. Aside from that, the food was amazing. Portions were large - could barely finish… and the flavors were oh so satisfying. Thanks for a great experience!
This place is a bit unassuming, tucked away among numerous dining options with big signs and bright lights. But amidst all that, it stands as a hidden gem. The entrance greets you with an enticing display of cakes and treats, and the staff, dressed in charming German attire, adds a quaint touch. The interior is a little dated, and the tablecloths feel unnecessary, as they don’t even fully cover the tables and mostly just get in the way. To start, I had the warm bread — simple, but comforting. Then came the King Ludwig chicken, and wow, I was blown away. It was absolutely delicious! The dish is drenched in sauce — so much that you can barely see the food — but it’s incredible. I used the warm bread to soak up every drop. I also tried the pork schnitzel, a more basic dish, but equally impressive. And the chocolate cake? Easily one of the best I’ve ever had
Reasonably priced, old style German restaurant in Huntsville. Food was spot on and super tasty. We went late for lunch while traveling back from Chattanooga to Memphis so I'm not deducting for the less than enthusiastic service.... he was likely overworked. Place was nice, food was really good and other than it was in a strip center (would have been cool to have an authentic stand alone German architecture building) I'm giving this 4+ stars restaurant a big ol YES! GO! ENJOY. Beer menu was a bit of a disappointment so that's why I took off half a star. Since Google won't let us give 1/2 star, you'll have to use your imagination.
One of the Best German meals I’ve ever had. Cucumber salad was very authentic. The Black Forest Schnitzel with fried potatoes was extremely flavorful. It was had to choose from all the delicious desserts but the chocolate cake was excellent. Service very attentive and recommendations spot on. We will definitely return.
Oh my goodness, this is the cutest restaurant in Huntsville! Each bit of the restaurant is decorated and cozy. The food was very delicious and seemed fairly priced. This is my first time visiting and heard that it would be very slow to get our food. It was not, though I wouldn't have minded because they brought out some bread to munch and I enjoyed the ambiance so much I was content to just sit there for a while. I'll certainly visit again and I'm excited to try something new on the menu!
Quaint little German restaurant off Highway 72 in Huntsville. I had the Weiner Schnitzel that came with potato salad and a house salad. It was pretty good and the ambience was pretty German. Prices run a little high, around $30 a plate. They will ask if you want bread with the meal. The bread is not complimentary. There is a charge with it. The beer is also on the high side. I paid $13 for a 24 ounce Hefeweizen on tap.
Stopped in Huntsville as part of our vacation trek. Saw this place on our way to the Space center. So glad we stopped! A nice selection of German biers. Menu had several selections. I had the Chicken Berlin, Hubby had the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu. We also enjoyed the dark chocolate layer cake. This was one of the best German meals I've had!
Some of the best German food in HSV. The potato crusted tilapia with fried potatoes is my go to order from here. It can get pretty crowded at dinner time. However if you can get seated immediately the service is super quick and friendly. I highly recommend trying the assorted sausage platter for an appetizer! All around an amazing restaurant that I will definitely be visiting again soon.
The food here was all really well cooked, but some dishes like the Schnitzel and dumplings were pretty bland. The atmosphere was nice, and while there was nothing spectacular about the service, there was nothing notably bad about it either. The desserts were delicious and pretty much a reason by themselves to come back just to try more.
Great food, great service and the manager 12/14/24 7pm was top notch! Thats the kind of manager you want running your restaurant. He was helping everyone with everything. A+ for Gordon(think that was his name)
No wait, even though we were there at peak lunch time. The staff was super friendly, service was excellent, and the German cuisine was on point! Ive been here twice when I was in town, and it definitely didnt disappoint.
If you want to sit down and feel like youre getting an authentic experience this is the place!! Instead of a watered down Americanized loose interpretation of an imported cultural experience, this place will satisfy your imagination.
Try the black forest cake. You won t regret it
Im definitely coming back here! Some great German food. Had the goulash. The service was great!
I went for a solo supper to try out this place. I love German food and was excited to try it. I got their Jaeger Schnitzel and a sweet tea. For sides I got fried potatoes and a cucumber side salad. The side salad was sliced cucumber with a few diced tomatoes on top covered in a watery dill white dressing. It wasn t bad, but a bit odd for my taste. The schnitzel was good, but the size was a bit small given the price. The fried potatoes were ok, but at least one was undercooked. The waitress was nice, but the food took forever to come out. I was lucky as one family was there before I got there and still was waiting after I finished. For a shade over $30, including tip and sweet tea, I expect more from the service and the food. Parking: This is in a large strip mall, next to a locally popular restaurant. There is plenty of parking, but you may have to walk a bit to get into the restaurant depending on when you arrive.
Excellent honey pecan chicken, pan fried taters, and sauerkraut. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access at front door. Food : 5/5 |
Schnitzels are one of my favorites. I orders a Jager (hunter) schnitzel was simply gravy instead of being breaded. My companion had a breaded schnitzel, it was twice the size as Jager schnitzel? I had a piece of cheesecake which was half the size that I expected small portions and overpriced.
Food was demure service was SLOW
What a wonderful experience! We dont have German food where we live, so were hoping this would be good. They did not disappoint! Food was fantastic, service was fantastic, everything was wonderful. Cant wait to go again!
Very good food. We will be back.
Great experience with amazing food..usually super busy but definitely worth the wait.
I was in Huntsville for the week on a work trip, decided to check this place out after seeing the good reviews online. Food was terrible, portions were small, and everything was too expensive for such disappointing food. Bland, bland, bland.
Great food and great atmosphere! Get there early, it fills up fast. Service can be a little slow, especially at peak times. The food is fantastic. Visiting from out of town where I dont have any German options. Really loved the honey pecan chicken schnitzel!
I love German food, and this place doesnt disappoint.
Great Food!
I ordered the schnitzel and was very disappointed with the size of the portion I was served. It was half of the size of the portion served to my dinner guest. Additionally, it was a very tough piece of meat indicating that it must have been pork loin instead of tenderloin (the traditional cut of meat and what you would expect for the price they charged). I expressed my disappointment to the waitress and the management refused to make it right. I will never go back and highly recommend you do not waste your time or money at Ol Heidelberg.
Ms. Karen, our server, was friendly and attentive. The food was good, schnitzel the best. And the desserts looked wonderful; we had the Lemon Rum and the Lemon Creme cakes. However, upon noticing the dessert case when I first walked in, I commented that I thought they wouldnt have any dessert because its not listed on the online site or menus posted, and so I was happy to see some, and the front door greeter was very testy, saying Thats because we dont have a dessert menu. And she proceeded to tell us to follow her and threw down our menus on the table and left us. Then came back and banged down our silverware and left in a Huff, irritated to have us, it seemed. If Ms. Karen didnt show up to be our server, and it was the cranky door greeter, we were going to request a different server. Just been around long enough not to want a server that doesnt seem like she wants us there for dinner. Karen redeemed the place for us. I believe the door greeter was ending her shift before the big dinner crowd came in, since we were early, because I didnt see her again. And she certainly seemed ready to go and not happy to have customers. I will say the younger lady leaving her shift as we came in, in a red German uniform dress, was also super friendly, holding the door open for us and smiling, even though she was on her way out. Those two sweethearts were dolls. Were here for a work conference, our third visit, coming every two years, and Ive always wanted to visit this place. However, with all the other Huntsville options, we wont be back to Ol Heidelberg. Well try Hildegards German Cuisine next time. We did love the wooden booths and side boards, the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant pre-dinner time, and the 24oz biers.
We were quite surprised that the quality of the sausages. We just went in there on a lark and we decided we will definitely go back the next time were hitting the Orion amphitheater.
I had not been in years. The food was amazing and the service and staff were awesome!!
We always have a great meal here. The honey pecan chicken is a great choice. Wrap up the meal with a piece of German chocolate cake or a slice of limoncello pie.
The food was edible, but having lived in Germany and cooking German food myself, this missed the mark. I don t think I have ever had an unbreaded schnitzel that was also not fried. It was just a beaten piece of pork with bland sauce. Limited menu and tiny sides. The texture of the cake felt like it was old. Even the casing of the sausages were comparable to hotdogs.
Felt i was in a restaurant in Germany.
I frequent this restaurant often and Ive always had great service and amazing food.
Used to be great food. Every time we visit it gets worse each time. Think this will be last visit. Usually red cabbage is favorite dish. This time was all the vinegar couldnt taste anything else. Sad to see such a staple fall off.
10/10 So good. Everything tasted super fresh. Straight up comfort food. Ophelia is our favorite and always so kind. Food
Food was magnificent I hadnt had such good German food in a long time My friend and I enjoyed it thoroughly, they need help with their wait staff though.
It feels and tastes like an authentic German restaurant.
Yummy find. We will go there again!
Food was good but a bit over priced.
Very overpriced, and not very good. The entire restaurant needs renovating/updating badly, and deep cleaning from top to bottom you feel like you are eating in a dungeon, it s so dark I almost couldn t read the menu sorry, but the outfits that the employees are wearing are almost offensive. As for the food: the chicken schnitzel was fried well and cucumber salad was good. However, the cucumber salad should just be complimentary or the serving size needs to be bigger for the price. The fried potatoes were soggy and overloaded with bacon, it was all I could taste. The bread that is brought to the table was just a sliced loaf like it was bought at the grocery store down the street. Not fresh. Not appetizing. Not really sure what to do with it. Gravy and sausages were kinda sad to look at. It s a German restaurant, and when we asked for the beer menu it was almost like they didn t want to provide it? Said they only have 3 beers on tap or something? Something tasted off with the beer. Also, kitchen clearly exposed to the public dining area is not a wise move. Could be a great spot if these things are considered and changed.
Delicious!!! The Reuben was outstanding, and the veal cordon bleu was amazing. Dont forget the black forest cake for dessert. Thank you, Bridget & Heather, for great service and wonderful food!
Dont bother. Showed up. Asked for a table for 3. Was told 20 minutes wait. Said ok. 45 minutes inquired and was told they didnt make the reservation and not its an hour wait. Bennett was the host name so when you see him just leave. He will seat others that come after you without reservations and just look at you like youre not supposed to be there.
This place is overpriced for the quality. The schnitzel was alright, a bit dry and the bratwurst was underwhelming. It just tasted like it was boiled and served with packaged sauerkraut. The bread is a dollar extra per person which was not ok, but fine except that it was just sandwich bread cut in half. Finally, the cheese plate was slices of German cheese like the ones that come in the lunchables and some grapes, but honestly I tasted cheddar. I would recommend only getting an entree and a beer and calling it a day. Just that will be pricey enough.
We really enjoyed it here. The food was good and great service. But the prices are on the high side. We were a bit surprised that we were charged $5 more for a salad on top of the entree price. The chicken with a side of potatoes was $15.
Front desk woman was extremely rude. Left without trying food because they werent willing to clean a table to seat us. They werent busy and said it would take a really long time to clean one table so we just left.
I love the old world decorations. The food was delicious and our server, Bennett, was excellent and friendly. This was my boyfriend s first German food experience and he said he d come back to try other things. We had the German Meatballs as an appetizer (we needed a dose of spaetzle) with a cucumber salad. Then we each ordered schnitzel entrees: King Ludwig, Jaeger, and Black Forest. They all came with big, fresh salads. The Roquefort bleu cheese dressing is different and delicious. They were all exceptionally delicious entrees and came out promptly. We took a slice of apple cake home, it looks delicious! Love the look and feel of the restaurant. Please make sure the side plates have been wiped before they come to the table. I didn t like having to dry it with my cloth napkin.
Absolutely worth the wait! After five years of anticipation, I finally had the chance to dine at Ol Heidelberg, and I m thrilled to say it exceeded every expectation. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting, with its charming German décor and cozy vibe that immediately transported me to a quaint European town. The food? Simply phenomenal! Every dish was bursting with authentic German flavor. I started with the Jägerschnitzel, and it was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, paired with a rich, savory mushroom gravy that was to die for. The warm German potato salad was the best potato salad Ive ever had, while the red cabbage was tangy and sweet the perfect complement. I also sampled the sausages on my second visit, and each one had a distinct, perfectly seasoned taste. And dont even get me started on the desserts which are fresh made daily. Youd think they came straight from the set of a Food Network dessert show. What really stood out was the impeccable service. The staff were friendly, attentive, and passionate about the menu, making excellent recommendations and ensuring the experience was top-notch from start to finish. Even though I waited years to visit, I now see why Ol Heidelberg has such a loyal following. It has easily become one of my favorite spots in Huntsville, and I can t wait to go back and explore more of their delicious menu! If you haven t been, it s a must-visit!
One of the best meals weve had since we moved to Huntsville a few months ago. Bread on the table, perfectly cooked food, constantly full drinks, and massive dessert portions made this place an instant win.
Tip notch, food was hot and tasty, service was excellent
Food ranged from OK to completely tasteless. If youre German, you will be disappointed. This is not your grandmas cooking.
Good food with great atmosphere. No complaints
We make special trips to Huntsville centered around eating here. The food is always delicious. There was an odd thing in that they have started charging for the bread basket that comes to the table. Not insurmountable, just puzzling....I think it was around 2 or 3 bucks.
Very good German food.
Very polite staff, but the food quality is lacking. Also, I was charged for bread even though I did not ask for bread nor eat bread.
Amazing experience, great food and excellent service.
Went last week, first time in awhile. Not as good as it has been. 7 of us seated with 3 children. After ordering, our salads came out fairly soon. Then we waited almost 45 minutes for the rest of the meal to arrive piecemeal. Most items were room temperature. One request we made for bin for my grandsons brat did not come. Waitress checked back with us 20 minutes later. Hopefully, it was just one bad experience.
Have always loved eating here. The food is always great. And as always the best service and love the low lighting and calm atmosphere.
We returned after a bit of a break. They have really cleaned up the decorations which were getting a bit concerning. The food has always been great.
Its not a very fast paced restaurant but then again, most German places Ive been too have not been. They do serve some great good though. Will definitely return!
Its been years since we had eaten here, but we were in town and wanted German food. Location had changed. Had to wait a bit for a table, but it was so worth it. Food was delicious. Highly recommend. Vegetarian options: Cheese ravioli with pesto was good. Several other options as well.
If I could give zero stars I would. The food was awful. None of the servers seemed like they wanted to be there. The energy of the place was not welcoming at all. I am not sure how they have 4.6 stars. Our meal was 50$ and it s apparently 1$ per person if you want bread.
I understand that prices have gone up but $10 for a piece of small cake and $10 for a half a glass of wine is ridiculous, and the prices for these items should have been on the menu like the prices of the courses because we would have passed on them.
Celebrator beers were great! Our food was very good once we FINALLY got it! We arrived at 7:00pm only to watch people that arrived AFTER us dine and leave, until we were served at 8:37pm and they close at 9pm.
Food was great!
Service was nice, and attentive. But if you cook German food this isn t the place for you. The jägerschnitzel sauce tasted like jar of au jus brown gravy that they just threw fresh onion and mushrooms in. It had little to no flavor. The breading was more like country fired chicken or steak than schnitzel and the meat was cut too thick. The crust wasn t crispy, it was moist and smothered in gravy. Best way to describe this place is southern fried food resembling German food. The only thing we liked was the cabbage and the service. For the price and taste it s not a place we will be visiting again.
The Jaeger Schnizel was deep fried instead of pan-fried, and it wasnt very good. The pan-fried potatoes were more like steak fries, and I was expecting German pan-fried potatoes. The red cabbage was excellent, and the lemon Italian cake was excellent.
Good choice for German cuisine. A staple of Huntsville restaurants for decades. Classic German decor.
Ive been eating here for over 20 years. I can always count on great service and delicious food. With a large menu to choose from. The liver berliner is my favorite. The bread is to die for, always fresh and warm
Great food as always.
This was a great stop on my business trip to Huntsville! I loved the atmosphere and German decor, the German music, and the ladies dresses were even German! My waiter was quite helpful and served me a very cold beer. The Chicken Berlin that I got was very tasty. Would definitely come here again if I return to Huntsville.
We have been coming here for 20 years. We drive over from Atlanta. Met up with friends. The cordon blue my husband had was good but the sides were not up to par this time. The cucumber salad which was 7.95 had absolutely no flavor! The fried potatoes (usually a favorite as well) seemed like they had bacon bits instead of real bacon. Will give it one more try (it could always be a bad day).
I love this place. I normally order the Black Forest Schnitzel and it s great but today I ordered the Cordon Bleu Schnitzel and it was amazing. You can t beat the beer either.
Almost felt like I was in Germany! Great authentic food, service was good, but a bit too slow. They were very busy though, we had a 15 minute wait to get a table. Fantastic deserts and definitely recommend the draft beers. Tried the cucumber salad, and the Tilapia with German fried potatoes. And the German goulash with spatzle. Overall a great dining experience tonight. Kid-friendliness: A special kids menu that included fried fish, chicken nuggets, and a personal pizza.
Way to expensive and very noisy
Food was excellent.
Gypsy schnitzel was great!
We had a lack of knowledge of German foods but server was help and knew the dishes and was a big help, and the foods we picked was good! Vegetarian options: Portobello mushroom schnitzel Parking: Large parking lot may have to walk
Food is so good. Air conditioner not working or else would be five stars
Our waitress Christie K was not friendly. She had an attitude and made us feel unwelcome. We went on Father s Day and they raised the prices a significant amount so be aware of paying more than regular price on holidays. They charged $1 per person for bread which was unusual in my opinion. Overall, our experience was not great.
Well worth the two hour drive. Heather was an amazing sweet server. My wife had the pork schnitzel and I had the veal schnitzel, both were awesome. The potato salad and fried potatoes were also really good. Sauerkraut was some of the best Ive ever had. We also shared a bratwurst, fresh and mild with amazing mustard. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area. My only complaint was the dining room was super warm when it was in the 90s outside.
Dietary restrictions: The Jaeger Schnitzel is gluten-friendly and very good. Food
One of the best places to eat in Huntsville.
Food
My favorite restaurant in Huntsville! Great service and food!
Wonderful.
Wow! What a place?! Step into this restaurant is like stepping into a restaurant in Germany. They even have vegetarian options! Outstanding in every way!
We have been here several times and the food has been exceptionally GREAT. The food is savory and melts on your mouth making you want more.... But for Mothers Day is was just ok. The selected Mothers Day menu was a selection of limited items and not the regular menu and the food was not quite as good as other days but we still enjoyed it. If you happen to go, and I do recommend that you go, get dessert....the Carrot Cake it simply the best I have ever eaten!!
Food was okay. We were refused by a waitress in front of us and got seated by another waitress. We don t mind the price and happy to support local business but be aware that some of the staff can be unprofessional and disrespectful in their interaction with you. We won t be back again.
Fried schnitzel was very good. Portion was kinda thin, but very good Good service Not cheap for lunch, but good food and service made it worthwhile Food : 5/5
My first visit and the food was very good texture wise. I cant really taste food because of my medications but my family said they really enjoyed it. Service was great. I appreciated not being hounded while I ate. Id come back again if Im in the area.
Food was good, not wow but good. Great service and atmosphere.
The only place we go for great German Food and a pleasant atmosphere.
Ol Heidelberg Cafe is a wonderful place to get German food. Our server, Karen, was amazing and made fantastic recommendations. The Weinerschnitzel was great, as was the sausage sampler and potatoes. There were several desserts to choose from but we got the red velvet parfait, which was super tasty! We were just visiting but if we lived in Huntsville, wed eat here regularly.
Vegetarian options: The portobello mushroom schnitzel was delicious Food
Our go-to spot for authentic German food. ORDER THE CAKE!!! Best cakes in town! The staff is excellent and we love the vibe. 2x a month regular customers for life!
Outstanding food. Cindi did an amazing job serving us.
I had pan-fried grouper and it was delicious.
All the food was excellent and Cindys service was amazing. Next time in this area will stop again
09 APRIL 2024 TUESDAY MORNING MEMO ( TRAVEL EDITION ) THE OL HEIDELBERG HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA Being a lover of German food I try to search out German restaurants wherever I can. While in Huntsville Alabama to hear the American Brass Band Competition I visited and dined at the ol Heidelberg. One of the best German restaurants I have ever done, including the ones I dined at in Frankfurt Germany. Serving traditional German dishes the bratwurst was wonderful, and the sauerkraut was to die for. The black German Lager was a great accompaniment, I gave this 5 out of 5 tomatoes on my rating chart. A very enjoyable meal and a very enjoyable location with great service. Ol Heidelberg is a Family owned and operated restaurant since 1972. It moved to its current location in 1989. Ol Heidelberg was the sister restaurant of Bavaria Delicatessen which opened in 1963 and operated for twenty years. Ol Heidelberg has been serving the best and most authentic German Food since 1972, it is one of the oldest and most recognized restaurants in Huntsville. The Schrader Family with the help of their loyal employees give their customers full attention along with good food at reasonable prices, with friendly and courteous service. Should you find yourself in Huntsville Alabama be sure to look up this place. The ol Heidelberg restaurant. Rated
Good German cuisine at a good price! Just what I wanted!
The atmosphere and service were stellar. The food lacked inspiration and was basic. I ordered the Jeager Schnitzel. It was lack luster. The schnitzel was covered in what tasted like either pre packaged or canned gravy. The gravy lacked flavor. The salad was the highlight of the meal. Their ranch dressing had a surprising zing of deal and you could tell it was made fresh. Better than Cheddar s. Ultimately a real let down.
Great food. Acknowledge and friendly staff. Kinda dark and old feeling decor. Bavaria wasnt evolved much on Alabama German restaurants...
German food was excellent, service was spot on and very friendly server. Kid-friendliness: Not much for kids to eat Wheelchair accessibility: Available
Solid German food and solid German beer selection.
Our server Alysa was terrific. We always ask for her. She is always very pleasant and attentive. The food as always Excellent ..hats off to the cooks! The authentic feeling and atmosphere set it apart from other restaurants. We have been coming to Old Heidelberg for well over 20 years and have never been disappointed. We come every weekend and always look forward to traditional German food. One word Excellent Parking: Parking lot is large and no issues with finding a space right across from the front door. Wheelchair accessibility: Ramp directly in front of door and has in/out with plant of space inside for seating.
Best food in town and stellar service. All schnitzels are delicious. Warm German potato salad with bacon is my favorite! Great pumpernickel bread too.
Great meal.
Food was good, nothing amazing. My chicken sandwich was on the greasy side but my husband enjoyed the pork schnitzel. Service was great. Vegetarian options: Very limited vegetarian options Dietary restrictions: Menu doesnt cater to dietary restrictions
Food is delicious, sometimes the service is a little variable. Definitely want to verify the items on your check before you pay.
The food was great. My husband and I like German food and the place had been recommended. It was a special treat to visit. Much pricier than I had anticipated, but still worth the experience.
So good. Just dive in. Give it a try I loved it.
This place is a great place to get a taste of Germany. The recipes, the service and the atmosphere were all reminiscent of Germany. So glad we found it!
Decent food. Expensive for what it is.
Great food, great service, and nice relaxing environment
Great German food. I had the smoked sausage with warm potato salad and kraut. The food is fresh and high quality and friendly service. I look forward to going again.
A great experience. Exceeded our expectations. The food was amazing. Our server, Cindy, was on top of everything and super nice. We had the mushroom appetizer, a sausage platter, chicken entree, and of course the chocolate cake. The carrot cake was also awesome. Thanks for an excellent Tuesday evening dinner experience.
I would not recommend this place. It does not reflect German atmosphere. It is an American version of what used to be a German Rural restaurant. Not Lovingly and thoughtfully put together. Disappointing.
Good food, nice atmosphere. If you re looking for a good German meal this hits the spot.
Food and beer were very good. The food did take over an hour to come out though.
Chicken Berlin Schnitzel was fantastic. Highly recommend
My wife and I loved this place. Definitely worth the drive up from Birmingham.
Great German food
Honestly the food had no flavor. Had to ad lots of salt and pepper and then ask for ketchup. The beer was cold though and the waitress was great.
I m astonished at the amount of people commenting about the lighting. Clearly, y all don t understand German culture. Low dim lighting is normal in Germany to save energy costs, protect you during war times, and many other reasons. Before commenting about a restaurant and you have no understanding about the culture look into it first. This place is one of the most authentic German restaurants I have ever been to. Food is amazing, service is always great.
After having lived in Germany for several years, we returned to Huntsville and were excited to find a restaurant advertising authentic German food. This is not that place! We went for lunch, and even though the prices are high, would have been happy to pay that if the food had been good. It was not. I ordered the schnitzel and fried potatoes. The food was not hot when it arrived and was barely even warm. It tasted like it had been made earlier in the day and just sat in a warming tray until I ordered it. I did not even eat the green beans I ordered as they tasted terrible. We had read about the dollar charge for bread so when our server asked if we wanted bread we said no. Later, he brought a basket anyway. When we opened it and saw that all it was was sliced loaf bread we figured that must be complementary. Obviously, if they were charging a $1.00 we expected it would be some type of fresh baked German bread. We were wrong. We were each charged a dollar for that basket of loaf bread. My husband had a similar experience with his food, and was not even given what he had ordered. This was a very disappointing experience. We will not return to this restaurant. The food is not authentic German food, and it is not even tasty. And it is way overpriced!
Vegetarian options: Portobello Mushroom Schnitzel Food
What a wonderful place. I wish we could get food like this in Birmingham. We visit every time were in the area.
Best schnitzel Ive ever had. The staff is wonderful.
I am truly disappointed in my experience here. The food did not taste authentic and the portions are very small. I would not recommend.
Wonderful dining experience at lunch!
The four people in my party were seated by the kitchen door, which was constantly being open and closed, however ample open seating was available elsewhere. Bread was molded and had to be replaced, schnitzel was dry, potato dumpling was disgusting and cucumber salad was tasteless. Waiter apologized for the long wait (over an hour) for food. Have been going there for over 25 years. The experience was most disappointing. Appears that this restaurant is going downhill. Sorry, but I had to write this review.
Great food, amazing service and a wonderful atmosphere!!
Service was very slow. Food is ok but way overpriced. Food
Very busy with no help keeping tables cleaned and customers served. Waited over an hour and finally left without being seated. Family went next door to Mexican restaurant seated with no problem. Food Awesome.
Old country European charm with great German food
Vegetarian options: Excellent vegetarian options! The portobello schnitzel is fantastic! Food
Authentic and great food/service.
The Best and Most Popular German restaurant in town. Great Variety of German Foods/Menu. I love the various Sausage Platters and the King Ludwig Chicken. Also extensive German beers on tap and Imported bottles and German Wines. Large always-changing Pie /Cake Cooler in Front. Unique, Warm, Cozy, Intimate Interior complete with The Most Loveliest Servers and Workers. Busy Hotspot place to go especially on the weekends. Love this place!
Loved everything about this place!! Our server was awesome! I wish I had her name! Pretty, long blonde hair, tall. Nice ink. AMAZING! Chose the perfect beer for me, then introduced me to beer and .. 7up? It was great food, fun, atmosphere and the desserts where awesome! Definitely going back. I took this pic., just cuz
Went at 5 on New Years eve,the salad with blue cheese dres(I like blue cheese) looked like someone dumped as much as they could on top,big inedible chunks!. The food arrived cold and the sauce was congealed. No potatoes and the red cabbage was tasteless! Very disappointed. Server was preoccupied by everything. Took an hour to get our main course, just not a good experience!
Great, authentic German food. Best weve had since being in Germany. Billy was a great server, and its a cute little restaurant.
Absolutely fantastic experience and fantastic food, and atmosphere was cool.
The food was excellent. I ordered the Berling chicken, which was cooked to perfection. Our server was very good and kept checking on us. Loved this place. Will definitely visit again if I am in Alabama.
This is by far the best German food in the USA. I have been to Germany many times as well.
I have been going to Ol Heidelberg for well over a decade now. It is the best German food Huntsville has to offer. The service is always good and friendly. My one complaint about my most recent visit was the chef could have hit the food with a bit more salt, but it is not like I cannot do it myself. I can tell Ol Heidelberg is getting older and may be do for a renovation in the coming years, but right now the restaurant has really solid German vibes. I recommend if you are looking for good German food. Also, I almost forgot, their desert cakes are absolutely amazing.
Great food and wonderful staff. Perfect.
This place is awful do not waste your time coming here. If it s possible for a Jager Schnitzel to look sad it was sad. Took one of my friends here and it was 100$. For a sad schnitzel
Great German food. One of my favorite places to eat in Huntsville.
Delicious.
Great food every time!
Had an absolutely AWESOME meal here tonight. Everything was just great! The Chicken Berlin was Very good as were the sausages. Try the house salad with the house special blue cheese dressing. You won t be sorry.
Brought my mother for her birthday dinner and food was amazing along with service she has been there 30 years and did amazing will definitely be back!!!!!
Amazing food, fantastic service! Absolute gem
Tasty traditional German food and some surprise menu items such as a cordon Bleu and ravioli! The King Ludwig was a cordon Bleu with a creamy sauce, and was excellent. The server, Billy, was helpful and attentive. despite being pretty busy around 1PM, the food came out very quickly!
A little stuffy when we walked in, no greeting or acknowledgement. But when we finally got seated, it was all great from there. Great, helpful server who helped recommend the right dish and took pride in his job. Delicious, excellent food. The Gypsy Schnitzel was fantastic and unique. Would definitely go back. Quaint, relaxing atmosphere. Just work on a warmer welcome upon entering restaurant so people feel like you want them there.
Delicious! Authentic! Friendly staff! Reasonably priced!
Ive been coming to this place for years and it never changes! The food is out of this world and the staff are always warm and friendly. Best German food by far in the state of Alabama! We live over 200 miles away and make a point to get there as much as possible. Authentic dishes served with a smile from people who really take pride in their restaurant. Highly recommend.....11/10 Kid-friendliness: They were really helpful and playful with the grandkids!
Overall the restaurant was very good and had dog friendly covered seating outside. It was obvious that our server was anxious around our dogs, but we just found her body language humorous and we were not offended. To balance this out, a young man who worked there came out, and very politely asked if it was OK to put our dogs. He was obviously a dog lover, and he was as nice as could be. The outside looks like a typical strip mall, but the inside is low-lit with a lot of character. It s like you stepped into Narnia. I got the schnitzel cordon bleu, and my wife got the honey pecan chicken. Mine came with fried potatoes and slaw, and she had the fried potatoes and red cabbage as her sides. A salad is an additional $5 and bread is $1 per person. The bread came out, fresh and warm and was well worth the extra cost. We both were surprised to like the red cabbage as much as we did, and the entrées and potatoes were so delicious. We ordered a Reuben to take home with us, and it was one of the best I ve had. When we told our waitress, we might want to get a couple desserts to go, she seemed a little frantic and was pressing about which ones we wanted. I told her I d need to go inside and see what they had. They have a very nice display case with a large variety of cakes and cheese cakes. I selected a caramel cheesecake and a slice of carrot cake. They were $10 per slice and their size didn t match their price, but were very tasty. When it was time to pay our waitress advised us that their credit card machine had just gone down and was rebooting. I said that s no problem, we will just hang out for a few minutes. Her reply was that the last time it happened it was well over an hour before it came back online. I went out to the car in the rain to see if I had enough cash to cover our bill, and luckily I did. I would think that some patrons in the restaurant would not be so fortunate, and I wondered how the restaurant would handle that. This restaurant has lots of character and great food, but be forewarned that some of the staff can be a little sharp edged in their interaction with you and their desserts are good but a bit pricey. I would still return. Parking: Strip mall
First and foremost; our service was outstanding! The restaurant appeared clean and well maintained! The food unfortunately was not as great. The Jäger sauce tasted like a mushroom grave out the jar, the spaetzle were dry and not edible, my Schnitzel was ok the crust was not very good but overall in taste ok.
One of the best places to eat we love it and have been coming back for 30 years
Went back twice in the last 5 month. The hostess was unfriendly both times . The waitress that I had the last time was downright rude . There was some kind of tension going on amongst the staff that was definitely passed on to customers that day . So , going forward when I want German food I will visit the other German restaurant in town . It might not matter to Heidelberg restaurant but it matters to me where I spend my money .
Oh my goodness! The best..
Excellent service! Wonderful food and a free dessert on your birthday.. what could be better? You will not leave here hungry.
Wonderful German food - always enjoy the food and great service. Traditional German fare - consistently hot and fresh.
Foods great. Only negative is I hope you like eating in the dark.
Vegetarian options: The Portabella Schnitzel was very good. Food
Great dinner in Huntsvikle
Went for lunch. Was it a schnitzel or soup? Ordered the Gypsy schnitzel. It was floating in a moat of cream sauce. No exaggeration there. Accompanied by few sautéed veg, and mostly raw onion. Maybe that s how they serve it. I don t know. The pork was tender and cooked well however. It tasted good, I was just thrown off by the volume of the sauce. Slaw was good. Potato salad was good. As for the atmosphere . There s that old restaurant smell when you walk in the door. The wall next to the booth was adorned with the sprinkling of previous guests meals. I think a good cleaning of the whole place would do it good. I d eat it again but I d ask to be sat at a proper table, and order a fried schnitzel with sauce on the side next time.
Service wa absolutely amazing and the food was over the top. We enjoyed our visit and hope to visit again.
It wasn t handicapped accessible enough for our wheelchair, so we can t give it another try. The waitress was excellent. The wines were great. The food meh. My jaeger schnitzel was ok. I know the mushroom sauce wasn t canned gravy but it was very similar. The broccolini was inedible: discolored, limp, cold. Moms cherry cake was fantastic!!
Still the best around. Quick service and excellent food.
Food is just as good as the very first time over 20 something years ago. Every chance I get I go.
Highly recommend the honey pecan tilapia. But all the food is done very well. The cheese plate used to be spectacular and now is only mediocre.
I grew up in Germany. Considering we are in Madison Alabama. The most wonderful atmosphere. Its great shout out to all the staff. The front desk guy welcomed us with the most wonderful accent that made me feel at home and he just felt like he owned the place pacing to make sure guests were happy. And the manager Tamara * sorry about spelling* was born to deal with difficult customers* class act.
Pretty tasty, respectable dessert display, fun atmosphere, Great service.
Under staffed. Someone took our cucumbers in the kitchen and the KITCHEN REFUSED to make more. Waiter kept forgetting stuff. Potato salad wasnt good. They charge $1 per person for bread!! Food
