Delicious dishes you dont see elsewhere. Went with friends and ordered a mix. Recommend the corn kernel pancake (slightly sweet from cork kernels, very crispy and airy) and the potato-eggplant-sauce dish (perfectly cooked potato, soft delicious eggplant in a delicious sauce). All was yummy!

Such a lovely experience! The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly!

The customers are really being taken advantage of. The prices have been increased and the portions have been reduced. The rice in the picture is 2.79 which is not even as big as a cup. I will not order from this restaurant again.

I have been looking for new restaurants, and I just heard about this restaurant recently. I chose to go there on a Monday to avoid the weekend rush hour. There were not many customers, and the food was served quickly. I ordered three dishes, pickled fish, tofu pot, and flavored meat. The portion of the dish was large and the pot was so hot that two people couldnt finish it. The pickled fish is delicious and a big bowl. Friends who like spicy food are in luck. The meat is fried and has a little bit of firewood. The tofu is quite tasty. The conclusion is that the taste is pretty good, I will try other dishes next time.

The portions are too small to be called Northeastern cuisine. The taste generally feels like the chef is at the level of a cook.

The pork and eggplant is straight heat.

Im a regular customer here and no questions, these guys serve authentic chinese food. However I noticed a massive cost cutting trend. I pretty much buy the same meals and the cost of the food has gone up and the portion reduced tremendously. I did mention this concern to them over the phone but I dont think it mattered at all. Its clear that things have gone up and restaurants need to some how pass the cost but I think there are better ways to do this than what these guys are doing.

Food portion is sadly small for Dongbei food. As a Chinese I was shocked when the dishes came in. The eggplant was half raw. There were bones in dishes that weren t supposed to have them.

The food is very inconsistent. We come here often and the same dish tastes different every time. Especially the Guobao Pork, it s a new experience every time.

1. There was an unknown object in the mutton stir-fried with green onions. It should be a rag (hopefully not a mop cloth). The waiter was hesitant and refused to tell us what it was that we ate. 2. The chicken crispy bones in the spicy chicken crispy bones are sour. 3. Replaced the spicy chicken crispy bones with mapo tofu. The tofu was sour. 4. They obviously know that their food is defective, but they still choose to feed customers such garbage. 5. All the vegetables are very salty. If they are not salty, they cannot cover up the sour taste of the vegetables. 6. A restaurant s poor cooking is its most inconspicuous shortcoming. Everything you order will be different from what you imagined. 7. Please close down quickly and stop harming others.

It doesn t matter whether the food tastes good or not, the mutton stir-fried with green onions, there wasn t much of the mutton, and there was red stuff in the meat, and what looked like a black rag strip came out. The most disgusting thing was that the clerk just said it was a side dish, and he accidentally added it. I didnt know what it was, but I didnt say anything, so I took the initiative to return the dish. And this dish you stir-fry with onions? Please dont insult this dish, please? Moreover, the menu picture clearly shows green onions, but when served, it is made with onions. Also, this dish is basically made of onions, and it s really brave to sell it for 23 knives.

It is a terrible experience, way worse than 2 yrs ago when I first went there. Wont give another trial.

It s getting worse and worse. The casserole is too salty, and the braised pork ribs with potatoes and green beans are really unpalatable. I put the three things in the pot and stir-fried them until they were thick enough.

I came from China and have been to this restaurant a few times. The plus is the flavor is overall ok. However, cost saving practice from them is something not impressive to me. I ordered same dish every time just to see what could be different. It proved to me that they seemed to have tried to practice cost saving further more. I saw their price has been gone up and I truly understand their cost has also increased. I just wish what they offer is adequate and as advertised as their menu photos. Today, I just could not help to write this advice to the owner of the restaurant. It is overall disappointing.

Average food, Ive had better in Ottawa. Prices are expensive - 2-3 bucks more per dish than other local chinese spots in the city. They also charge you a fee for takeout containers - which is written in Mandarin only on the receipt so those who dont speak the language wont even know what the fee is for. The servers also wont tell you that theres a fee for those containers until you pay; its weird since the whole point of chinese food is to order a bunch of dishes and take the rest home.

Took my kids for lunch and they loved the food. Portions are great for sharing and delicious. Definately will be back!!

Ive been wanting to write a review the first time I went here with my mom and sister but I am finally getting to it This has been my favourite Chinese restaurant in Ottawa ever since I tried it, my family is Chinese and the flavours are so authentic and delicious! Come here for great tasting Chinese food and especially if you like spicy food you should order the spicy fish in chilli oil its amazing

Best Chinese restaurant on the west end of the city. Lots of authentic dishes here. No canadianized stuff here. Great for those that like lots of heat in their food. Staff are nice and friendly.

Slow service communication difgiculty with the servers

The boiled meat slices were very unpalatable. The taste was very bland and only dry and spicy. The meat slices also had a strong smell of rice wine, and the cooking wine had not evaporated completely. The Guobao Pork is all batter. Yangzhou fried rice with diced vegetables is particularly large. There was almost no service during the whole process, and we poured water by ourselves. The waiter only served the dishes and took orders. In the end, the tip was mandatory 15%. Without informing us, he added the tip amount by us and asked us to swipe our card. We originally wanted to tip. But it would be really unpleasant to force it to be collected like this. Moreover, the food was not very fresh and I got diarrhea after eating it. Anyway, I will not go there again.

Onions are not fresh

My first meal here was a good experience. The reason for the 4 stars is that the man in the apron of the milk tea shop has a somewhat laid-back attitude, and the taste of the milk tea really disappointed me. Eggplant I think it s delicious, the others are not authentic but I think they are quite fragrant, maybe it s because of traveling all the way here

Delish chinese food, the best that I eat.

Although I heard that the quality control is a bit unstable, I always thought it was fine because I always eat there. Until the most recent time First, the waiter at the front desk brought the bowl with his finger against the inner wall of the bowl. Secondly, the casserole with sauerkraut was not sour after washing and had no taste at all. The shredded potatoes also had a slight smell. I was very disappointed.

Got to try some new dishes and the quality of the food was really good. A little expensive but thats the price of feeling good after leaving instead of an upset stomach

Ordered four dishes and picked them up by myself: 1. Sauerkraut and meat. I ordered a large portion, but there wasnt much besides soup, and the few pieces of meat were almost cooked to pieces. The sour soup tastes very average. 2. Old-fashioned pot-wrapped pork. The portion was small and the cut was too thick, resulting in sweet and sour pork chops. 3. Cashew nut shrimp and fish-flavored eggplant. The thickening sauce almost turned into jelly, and the taste was too strong. A plate of thickening sauce felt like a chop suey meal. 4. Spicy hotpot. The ingredients are terrible, there is not much else except eggplant and potatoes. I have never been to Northeast China so I don t know whether it is authentic or not, but the portion size is definitely not authentic. As for the price and taste, its not worth traveling so far to pick up. Basically, I wont patronize it a second time when I pass by.

Northern Chinese food and Sichuan chinese food

This is a great restaurant that serves food from the north of China. Its not the same as the Cantonese food that you usually get in Canada. If youre open to a different style of Chinese food, youll love it.

We come here often to eat. It is the most authentic Chinese restaurant in the area. It specializes in northern Chinese food which is a different style. Dont expect to come here and order chicken balls (which is a very western dish- not authentic at all). We really enjoy their specialities such as the fish and sauerkraut stew. Their sweet and sour pork is delicious too (the meat was lean and not fatty which I prefer). My children love their corn pancakes. The restaurant is clean, spacious, and staff are friendly. Our food was hot when served and portions are good. We had plenty of leftovers. I am originally from Toronto so have high expectations when it comes to eating at a chinese restaurant and this place ticks my boxes. Highly recommend. Vegetarian options: Many tofu dishes or vegetable options Parking: Plenty of parking. Plaza isnt busy. Kid-friendliness: They have high chairs. I recommend bringing your own cutlery and plates for kids

It was my first time here and had an exceptional experience. The food was very good and the service was good as well. It s very easy to get Chinese food but let me tell you, not this good. We ordered like 10 dishes for 5 people to share. I felt like it was slightly more expensive but the portions are bigger and tasty.

Had pepper salt pork sirloin, very disappointed on the food quality. The pork was very tough, hard to chew and swallow, also the celery tasted bitter. This is what $18 food looks like. Waste of time and money.

Went here to eat with friends. The environment was very nice and clean. The staff were also very kind. We ordered fish fillets, local three delicacies, boiled pork slices, and farm-style stir-fried pork. The portions were very generous and went well with rice. It was delicious!

Taste of the food is good. Facilities could be a little more looked after. Examples, boxes are all in plain sight from dining area, lfalling door knob at front entrance, mop and bucket in the way of the hand dryer in mens bathroom. A bunch of easy fixes can make the atmosphere better but the food and menu are great.

Is the chef Chinese? Which chef school taught you how to thicken griddle potato slices? Then the spiciness was so salty and the potato slices were so soft that I couldnt pick them up with chopsticks. The Kung Pao Chicken is even funnier, with only the sour taste of vinegar. There were less than ten diced meats in the entire plate, and the rest was all onions and frozen carrots. If you don t know how to do it, don t open a store. Isn t that disgusting?

As a northerner, I finally ate northern food in Ottawa. The fish-flavored shredded pork tasted weird. Maybe it s because it s not Sichuan food? It would be nice if the cauliflower for dry pot cauliflower could be made into smaller pieces. The stir-fried chicken was delicious, and the sauerkraut was also good. I ordered too many dishes and didn t order the casserole. I ll try it next time.

Truly authentic Chinese food! Highly recommend the chicken fried rice, General Taos chicken, chicken curry, and crispy pork with cumin. Really everything on their menu is delicious. Great service too, very polite and helpful staff.

They don t show the bill before swiping the card, and tipping is mandatory . I strongly demanded to see the bill before giving it to me. As expected, there was something wrong with the bill. There was no rice and I still had to pay for it. The attitude was very bad when I asked for a refund of 2 yuan for rice, and no tax refund was given. Never again! ! !

Service is bad. Soup is super sour as well. They charged me 15% tips without letting me know. I only find out when I checked the receipt. I would say this restaurant is getting much worse than before.

I went there for lunch yesterday and When I asked the server for the bill, she brought the terminal with the amount already entered. The amount seemed high and when I asked for clarification, she kept insisting for me to just tap the card. I asked for the details and after great reluctance she told me that she had already added about 25% tip. I find this totally unacceptable for her to add the tip without telling me.

Worrying food hygiene! I ordered a delivery today, and I almost swallowed this wire and it cut my throat.

Went and ordered cantonese chow mein. And there was maybe 2 small shrimp and less than my pinky s worth of meat. I kept looking for the meat thinking it was somewhere but it wasn t. It cost like $17 I think for basically just noodles.

Really depends on when you go. When the servers sit down for dinner or lunch dont expect good food or service.

It was awful. We threw it all out after a couple of bites. Spring rolls and rice was unbelievably bad, and the other pork dishes had a ton of sauce and just not edible. We had to make dinner instead. $65 all went in the garbage.

New favourite restaurant in the area. Food was delicious, and felt authentic. If you are looking for a Chinese restaurant beyond typical westernized Chinese food, this is the place! It had really good portion sizes in person. We previously got take out and were a bit disappointed by the sizes - in person the sizes seemed much larger and great value. Will definitely be coming back again.

Food is great, the Szechuan fish in hot oil, and wood ear and Bok Choy in black vinegar are really good in particular, just the right amount of spice for us. Couldnt resist getting the kung pao chicken, its sweet and a tiny bit spicy, not like other places in town, I liked it personally. Dishes are great for sharing. Weve also had the Shanghai noodles and beef tenderloin as takeout and they are also good. Will definitely eat here again, nice change from the other more Americanized Chinese style restaurants.

Quality Chinese food. Clean restaurant. We came here for dinner as it is a short walk from Brookstreet Hotel where we are staying. Ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp and Eggplant (good), Stir Fried Beef with Oyster Sauce (very good), Sichuan Pork Intestine (good), and Sauerkraut Stewed Pork Belly and Tofu (very good). With 2 additional servings of plain rice, the bill came to ~$97 before tips (including taxes). Portions are not huge but taste matters more to us.

Pros: Large portions, good prices, fast and attentive service, decent ambiance, connected physically to Presotea, great printed menu with clear pictures and descriptions. I can understand why this is Peter Hums favourite Chinese in Ottawa. Cons: Many of the stir fried dishes we chose tended to have the same base sauce. We were a party of 5 and ordered Chinese tea plus a refill. We were charged for the tea and for the refill at $10+! Tea is standard complimentary or nominally priced, so this was sticker shock for sure.

Best way to save some money is to order takeout on their website. Pick up is around 20 mins after you place your order. Authentic northern food but also offers southern dishes. Polite staff. I use their website for pick up and they package their dishes with tin foil lining the containers to avoid spillage. Lovely restaurant interior. First time to try here... excellent taste. Real Chinese food! I heard about this place from many friends and passed by this place number of time. With doubts, i came and tried number of dishes, wow, better than expected. I heard that chef is class one chef from China.... wow!

The meat-and-eggplant and casserole radish balls are both delicious. I personally think they are the best Northeastern dishes in Ontario. The boss and his wife are also super nice. I hope the business will be prosperous.

Chinese cuisine is not usually my go to, but I was converted by the food at Harbin. I am working my way through the menu, but so far I can tell you that the Mapu tofu is divine, as is anything with eggplant. The genmaisha tea is good too. I will be going back there regularly! The staff are friendly and the place is clean. A bit out of the way but very much worth the effort.

The meat dishes I ordered tasted pretty good, but they were a bit oily. The taste of the vegetarian dishes I ordered was different from what I expected. The service was not very good. When ordering, I noted on the order book that I did not want green onions. I emphasized this to the waiter, but they still added green onions. The cups provided for drinking water have many signs of use, and there are cracks on the bottom. Some cups will leak if they are broken into pieces. They should be replaced.

It s awful. I ll never go there again. It s the worst restaurant in Kanata. I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food was not good, water cup was very dirty, and services were bad.

The first place I went to eat after landing in Ottawa was Harbin. Thats how much my family and I like the food here. Im from New York City, and there is plenty of delicious Sichuan food there (e.g., Szechuan Mountain House), but Harbin captivates my mind like no other restaurant in Ottawa. In particular, were fond of the Mao Xue Wang ( ), Sichuan Mala Chicken Cartilage ( ), Szechuan Cabbage and Fish ( ), Stir-Fried Chinese Cabbage and Wood Ear with Black Vinegar, and many many more. The chili oil they use has a great balance of ma (numbness) and la (spiciness). Everything tastes authentic, including those dishes that do not rely on spicy flavors. Last, but not least, the prices at Harbin are more economical compared to similar quality restaurants elsewhere. On the one hand, it would be in my best interest if this restaurant continues to remain the hidden gem that it has been so far (i.e., shorter wait times for me, less crowding, etc.). On the other hand, the owners and chefs are such amazing people that I hope more food enthusiasts in the area come to know of this restaurant and try it out; I have no doubt that when they do, they will also agree that this is one of the most delicious and authentic Chinese restaurants in the region. Maybe this store is okay for foreigners/CBC, but it is really unauthentic for Northeasterners. The portion is very small, not to mention compared to Northeastern cuisine, but even compared to Cantonese cuisine. Let s talk about the Guobao Pork - it s actually brown, not crispy at all, it s very difficult to bite, and it was served 1 minute after ordering, so it s obviously not freshly made! There is everything from Northeastern cuisine to Cantonese cuisine, but nothing is truly authentic.

We had our lunch today. The food were quite oily. Price were high but food wasnt worth it. There were only 4 pcs of pork belly in the soup and over 90% of them were merely fat. The seafood vegetable meal had only fake crab meat, few tiny shrimps and squids.

Absolutely delicious food every time we order take away or eat in the restaurant. Weve tried many new dishes and loved each one.

Fantastic! Ive been looking for Sichuan sliced beef since I had it in Dongguan years ago. It was really well seasoned and just enough numbing to keep going back in for more. I also ordered the Shanghai fried noodles which were also great. Definitely not for everyone but 100% worth it. Ill definitely order again.

First time trying the food at Harbin and I was pleasantly surprised that the food was really good. I had low expectations because I have been disappointed with all the Chinese restaurants in Kanata. All 3 dishes I tried were really well seasoned, not too salty and not too sweet, very well balanced flavors. The best dish was definitely the General Tsos chicken - seriously the best Ive had in Kanata and even all of Ottawa. The chicken was crispy on the outside, very tender meat and amazing flavour. Only giving 4 stars because the dishes were very oily and the prices quite steep, but the generous portions kind of make up for the high price. Fast service and the staff were very friendly. Will definitely eat here again.

Variety of northern Chinese cuisine. Quite different from the usual Chinese fare at restaurants geared towards western palate. Different and very good. Bubble tea place attached.

I was literally shocked when I saw the receipt. They charged 2.50 for chili oil and 0.8 for take out containers? The story is I was asking if they can give me something spicy because the food was lack of flavours, he was nice and he brought me a small bowl of chilli sauce without telling me it worth 2.50 plus tax :) I don t have the receipt with me because they told me if you pay by cash then no receipt for customers. Not the first time but will be the last time. Not worth driving half an hour one way to go and dine in if there s hidden charges.

Ordered delivery couple of weeks ago, Spicy Blood Tofu, Beef Food, Beef Trip, Pig Intestine and Vegetable in Chili Sauce , the dish was out of portion spicy and some ingredients tasted questionable. As you might wonder whats going on, I got food poisoned the next day... now I understand the reason why it was that spicy. This is the first time in the past 10 years that I got food poisoned from a restaurant in Canada. And during Covid? good for you guys. I wish I can give negative stars. I need to make it clear, I know what the dish is made of and how spicy its supposed to be. I enjoy spicy food and can handle spicy pretty well. I GOT FOOD POISONED. (and I sincerely hope you are not gonna leave another comment to educate me the differences between food poisoning and upset stomach, if you went through the pain I had that night, you will know I am not ignorant nor exaggerating)

We got a take out of their popular item from the menu and they didn t disappoint us. Quantity was way too much for 2. Will definitely order from them again

I ve tried 4 different Chinese restaurants in Ottawa, mostly in the Kanata area. I ve never been so upset after trying 1. Mandarin 2. Chez lam 3. phu Yen 4. Jade Yi It was disgusting. Raw pork, cheese-like odor to the tofu, soggy deep-fried food, and the list could go on for pages. Harbin is now my go-to for delicious Chinese food. I ve ordered three times and I ve never been disappointed with any of the dishes. Recommend: deep fried beef (chef recommendation) Mapotofu(it s the real deal, so if you don t like MA spice, stay away) Rice noodles with beef Thank you Harbin for being so consistent with your food

Hands down the best authentic Chinese in Kanata! Makes me miss Toronto a little less when I eat here.

This restaurant is only few minutes from where we work and this is on our top list for lunch and dinner. I think we been here over 30 times and counting. Very authentic northern Chinese cuisine and you can find anywhere between kids friendly menus to burning hot inferno. Be sure to check the spicy level before ordering.

Some of the best restaurant Chinese food Ive had. Weve gone to places recommended by food critics like Suresh Doss in Toronto and this was easily as good or better. We had the chicken fried rice, the kung pao chicken and the beef with peanuts, I would easily recommend all three again.

Just had some food here, and loved it. Authentic Northern Chinese food, just like mom makes. Very friendly owners and staff. Excellent, and will go back. Ordered the Grandmother s pork belly with egg, kung pao chicken, crispy pork ribs, and mapo tofu.

Went to this spacious and bright restaurant for the second time today. I ordered seaweed meatball casserole, pot-roasted pork and ground three delicacies. The taste is authentic, delicious and satisfying. The waiters were enthusiastic and attentive, and asked many times during the meal about our needs. King of Han Jian Jiang Yi

One of the few Chinese places that are true to real Chinese food

First and last time. Very disappointed. Ordered the Szechuan chicken from this restaurant but I felt cheated. They gave me spicy chicken joints instead of Szechuan chicken. They guy who takes the order doesnt know English. Order through uber, not the phone. I called back and they offered to give me a free dish next time so changing the stars to 2 but it still doesnt make up for ruining my lunch. I will not take the free dish nor order from here again.

The fish with black bean was amazing. However, the spicy chicken wings needs a lot to be desired. The dish was loaded with chili peppers, onions, and whatever else spices in there but the chicken wings were just the bony parts and was overcooked.

The sauerkraut and mutton were very spicy, and the Kung Pao chicken had almost no diced chicken.

We really like the food from this restaurant. My only complaint is that their hours are too limited.

We had a very pleasant experience here. Restaurant was quiet (we went ~5pm on a Friday) and clean. The food came out promptly and the gentleman topped up our water regularly. We ordered: Grandma Pork Belly with Eggs, Corn Pancake, Potato Eggplant Green Pepper, and Sliced beef Louver in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil. Ample portion sizes and great flavours, the standout dishes for us were the pork belly and eggplant. Beef louver was surprisingly spicy as the tripe held the chili oil very well and the corn pancakes were slightly bland but make for great leftovers when warmed up in the oven till crisp and served with whatever condiment you desire. 10/10 would return and try some of their other dishes!

Food is good, big portions and not quite traditional but closer than many other places. The staff are very respectful and efficient. Definitely worth checking out.

First time ordering from Harbin. Ordered take out last night, did not disappoint! Portions were great size and the flavours were amazing. Food was ready when promised and staff was friendly! Will be back for sure, highly recommended!

I ve been dining there many times since they were open in Kanata. It s a great place for authentic northern Chinese food! All of guests I brought to the restaurant were very impressed with their food too, one of our favourites is stir-fried potato green pepper and eggplant (it s a bit spicy but as a person who does not consume spicy food, I feel the spicy level is acceptable). Casseroles are their signatures, which are amazing for those not consuming spicy food! For those who love spicy, their Sichuan dishes are must-tries! They can adjust the spicy level as your request, so you don t need to worry about too much spicy!

Ordered take out today for the first time and food was ready very quickly. It was absolutely delicious and plentiful. Highly recommend.
