Portinscale, Keswick CA12 5RF, United Kingdom
Warm, informal cafe with wooden walls & furniture serving deli boards, pizzas & flatbreads.
Lovely place with great food. Slight disappointment for me was that the menu on Facebook said the veggie brekkie comes with halloumi and that signed the deal for my visit. It didn’t ☹️
Dropped in for a light lunch after a morning walk and was very impressed, good menu choices and specials. Excellent food, friendly service. We were there on a Monday and it was still pretty busy.
Very good menu and service. Great food too
A great little local venue on the walk around the water in Keswick It’s quite close to the Keswick Centre and there is plenty of seating inside and out They have a great variety of hot chocolates, coffees, teas, cakes, and mini sandwiches and much much more definite recommendation of a place to visit whilst you spend some time in Keswick
Lovely chalet style restaurant with tasty food and drink options. Several cake options too. All choices we made were plentiful and delicious. Great service, clean and spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas.
Really great spot for a bite to eat after hiking in the area. Large cafe/restaurant with outdoor seating. Sandwiches, soup, jacket potatoes, pizzas and more. Also cakes and scones. The service was great and the food was wholesome and tasty. Highly recommend.
Lovely lunch after a walk from Cat Bells. Friendly and helpful staff. Good selection on the menu. Child and dog friendly. Good Covid controls. Large selection of delicious cakes.
The reason it may be the best tea room in the village is because it is the only tea room in the village. Reasonably priced food for the quality. Don't expect anything special, standard sandwiches and cakes, however have to agree with other reviews, the cake I had was dry. Only one gluten free option which was ginger cake, not the most popular flavour out there! Few things to watch out for especially if you are coeliac. We ordered gluten free sandwich and soup of the day. Sandwich was fine with gluten free bread, however the soup had normal croutons in it. If someone had ordered gluten free bread why would you then put croutons in the soup. I asked the waitress to check which she did and got us a new one straight away. We also had to ask for a clean tea spoon as one looked like it had been used to eat something sticky and missed being washed after. Has a good ordering system where you put a flower in a vase when you are ready to order. One member of staff however not as welcoming as the flower, felt like we were an inconvenience for them just being there, quite rude staff who took our order which at first we took personally but then we witnessed her speaking to someone else rudely. Other staff were very welcoming and accommodating.
Great brunch. Prompt service.
Great food well presented and excellent service
We only stopped for a snack, and while the food was lovely, we were bit shocked at the price over £30 for 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees
Good food at a reasonable price
Great place for teas, snacks, afternoon teas, and meals. A range of alcoholic drinks, including local ales, is available. Great service and atmosphere.
Lovely tearoom. Didnt have food but will do in future
Went for breakfast . Great sausage sandwich. Bread was best bread Ive eaten for a long time . Wheelchair accessibility: Yes wheelchair accessible.
A really lovely place with a tasty menu and great service. Well be back!
Delicious food and kind staff helped me out when I was caught short during that time of the month!
Lovely smoked bacon sandwich before doing the 10 mile walk around the lake.
Great food and efficient service, thank you!
Hidden gem in the small Lakes village of Portinscale. Food fantastic and staff couldnt be nicer.
Very nice food and staff
Lovely Cafe/Restaurant with a good selection, service was incredibly speedy. Highly recommend the Chalet Grostl!
Ideal location for end of walk tea/ coffee and cake. Friendly staff and good service. 2nd visit Oct 2024. Great service again and the sausage baps were excellent.
Came across this on the way to Keswick. Really tasty lunch and friendly service and the best egg Benedict that my wife has had
Excellent venue with superb food, usually. I had the Grostel for breakfast, having had it before, but this time it was like a dogs dinner and and slimey. Should have stuck to the full English, which looked brilliant. Food
Love this cafe. Good selection of food. Free WiFi good service and friendly atmosphere.
Had the pancakes with bacon& maple syrup
Lovely little cafe
Great food, friendly staff, were really helpful when a sudden rain shower moves everyone inside.
Nice
Love this relaxed value for money roadside eatery. There is a buzz to the location and despite limited parking I always seem to find some. The smashed avocado and poached eggs on toast was excellent and the tea plentiful. Portinscale has 2 excellent lunch time eateries with Lingholm equally good too.
Great place to eat .
Great little so of when either in you motorbike or car.
Lovely meal after walking catbells. Catered for my fussy son aswell. Enjoyed Food : 5/5
Fast service and good food.
Brilliantly located as you descend from Cat Bells walking back to Keswick a most welcome pot of tea and an early tea from their varied menu.
Lovely lunch in a pleasant atmosphere
Superb food, best breakfast snack in a while nicely set out and very clean with biker friendly parking
I always thought it was avocado on toast not bread. Plus Ive never seen eggs Benedict served on a whole muffin that wasnt split in half and then toasted. Maybe the toaster was broken.
Visited here Sunday 26th May with my husband and dog. Initially, I was impressed with the cleanliness of the place. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience following this. I had poached eggs on toast and both eggs were undercooked. I took it back to the front till and explained to a member of staff and I did not get acknowledged they simply took the plate and did not say a word, no apology and left me standing there. Another member of staff said they would bring a fresh one over to me. The fresh plate was brought over and no apology was made. They simply said there you go and walked away. No one came to check if our food was ok and nobody cleared the plates. When paying on exit they also didn t ask how our food was. Poor customer service for an expensive breakfast. Will not be going back.
Came for breakfast at 11.15am, wasnt very busy, ordered pancakes with the berries and they were amazing, Highly recommend. Others ordered eggs on toast and ciabatta dishes. All the food was good and the service was friendly and fast.
Lovely food and very quick service! The halloumi, red pepper, and hummus sandwich was AMAZING!
I had the bacon hash and it was very poor, very greasy. One of the eggs was popped and over cooked and hidden under the better one. I will not go there again, waist of money
Poor quality food, a bit of a greasy spoon.
Excellent fresh food, quick friendly service. We made the right choice stopping here.
Eggs Benedict spot on
We had drinks after a walk along the lake. Very nice and has parking outside the front of it. Wheelchair accessibility: It has disabled access and toilets
Excellent food and service!!
Cute place!
Very good
Lovely breakfast, good service and dog friendly too (sadly we are dog less now) but always worth noting. Much better price and quality breakfast than Lingholm Cafe.
Very welcoming staff, wonderful coffee and delicious cakes, spotlessly clean, can highly recommend!
Lovely food and lovely setting. Shame on the price though. £6:75 for Beans on Toast, like I know things have went up lately but come on that s ridiculous!
Lovely food
Called in for breakfast and had the full Cumbrian. Great quality ingredients cooked well. Dog friendly too, even had towels for dogs to lie down on.
Lovely place to sit and chat.
I had a lovely lunch here today. No problem changing something I didnt like that came with it. Service was impeccable. Didnt have to wait long for anything and all at fair prices. Will be going again.
Another great special meal, penne pasta with chicken and chorizo in a white wine sauce. Absolutely delicious
Dined outside as a nice day, scones and coffee went down a treat
Lovely cafe for a coffee and if you like a bite to eat.
Spot on for everything. Eggs and avocado on toast has set a new standard for me. Im gob smacked.
A welcome pit stop after a day in the hills
Does get very busy so plan on getting there early! Good menu and wonderful cakes!
We just had a coffee. But the staff are so nice, I have IBS and diabetes, they let me use the toilet after I left the cafe, I really appreciate their kindness.
Does exactly what it says on the box
Great food will be back
As always - a lovely experience. Was very busy but the service was v efficient. The staff were working so hard. Food was great. Look forward to returning soon
Good food, well cooked and reasonably priced. Unfortunately let down slightly by being cold enough to need you keeping your outdoor coats on. Very dog friendly though!
Had the Full Cumbrian breakfast and it really was incredible! The BEST breakfast mushrooms Ive ever had and it was a damn good sausage too. Decent portion size and sound prices. Dog friendly and staff were very helpful and lovely. Very good system of being ready to order via a flower in a vase so theres no pressure to order. Would return here again in a heartbeat. Vegetarian options: Didnt order vegetarian however there seemed to be great alternatives.
Beautiful place
Very helpful staff lovely food
Best cafe in Keswick
Fantastic find! Gorgeous good and fantastic menu (wanted to try it all) really pleasant staff and speedy service! Great selection of cakes! Will defiantly be back!! Parking: Parking is a bit of an issue
Great food and coffee. Staff very friendly. Poached eggs need 30 seconds less to be runny but meal still very tasty
Been on my list of places to visit for a while and today was that day. Really enjoyed it, will be back. Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs or steps to get to it. All on the flat.
Return visit (called a couple of years ago). Just as nice as last time! Oh, and still dog friendly Food : 5/5
Lovely food and good service
Really friendly and helpful staff great service good food would recommend this
Second time there , food superb , well worth a visit
Always like the food here. Great place to sit out or in for a meal or drink.
We just love The Chalet. Excellent food and brilliant staff.
The roasted vegetables was absolutely delicious!
A really good informal eatery I had the Tyrol inspired dish, so tasty would be a great pick me up if you were coming off the fells. Good selection of snacks and drinks. Very dog friendly too.
Stopped here for lunch as around the corner from our hotel. Very busy but it was drizzling. Had a lovely soup quite a good menu. Seemed to be only 2 working but they managed. Like most places in keswick dogs welcomed with even towels to dry them off. Parking: A few spots outside otherwise on the street which is narrow.
Great stop for a break after doing Catbells walk. The Tiroler Grostel ws superb.
Lovely food but pricey. Service felt rushed but it was Easter sunday and they were very busy.
Vegetarian options: Limited but probably sufficient, no veg sausage sarnie. Food
Lovely as always. Dog friendly.
Agood clean tearoom not overly attentive but in the background a big yellow flower was used to attract the attention of the staff which worked well
This place is a total gem of a find. The staff were amazing and the food was top notch. My husband and I were recommended by a fellow traveler and we had a super afternoon there. Really 5 star food, staff and venue. Highly recommended by myself and my husband.
Good choice of meals, snacks, brunch etc.
The tastiest bacon sandwich we have ever eaten before a long walk around Derwentwater.
Yummy smashed avocado and poached egg on beautiful brown bread
Smashing food, our dog was made very welcome, lots of treats! Friendly people and varied menu.
Fabulous food and staff very friendly and will definitely be back
Nice food and service
Staff a little frosty. Maybe catch them on an off day. Food nice enough.
All ok late afternoon coffee and cake
Good food and quick & friendly service
Dog friendly, good food, with a nice selection of cakes. Inside and outside seating. Food
Fast service and good basic menu. Parking: No dedicated car park, some street parking, best to arrive on foot. Food : 5/5 |
Every time we visit Keswick we have at least one Breakfast visit to The Chalet. Today 5 of us plus 2 dogs on one table, 5 Full Cumbrian Breakfasts served all together. Perfectly cooked with fast service very helpful as always. Parking: There is 2 spaces at the entrance plus roadside opposite not normally a problem we had 2cars.
We really enjoyed the full Cumbrian and French Toast on the two days we called in for breakfast. Staff super efficient and friendly. Highly recommend.
Sun. 18 October 2020. 1 pm. Staff having to manage Covid regulations like everyone else, but unlike a lot of hospitality staff the Chalet staff were outstanding. Amazing woman was marshalling customers and keeping vacated tables cleared at same time, never missed anyone arriving and waiting to be seated. Other staff were attentive and sensible, deferring delivery of hot drinks till after soup and sandwiches. Really pleasant and the food we had was excellent. Loved this place since before it was the Chalet, but today it was outstanding.
Nice place to have your lunch alfresco ( if the weather allows ;)
Great cafe
This place is fab! If I lived in Keswick Id come here every day. My friends and I had an absolutely delicious breakfast. I highly recommend it.
Good good
Brilliant bacon sandwich and coffee stop, tables outside, such friendly service. Dogs welcome outside with water bowls.
Great food well worth a visit
Excellent selection of cakes
Great french toast and the chilli was excellent , very friendly and quick service ,was great to see one of the team took the time to help a elderly gentleman with the bus times.
Nice ladies in the service. Food was really tasty.
Fantastic scones.
Most of the family is vegetarian. This cafe had a great selection of vege food. Service very well organised.
Stopped here for a mid walk snack. Service was good and prompt (not too busy) and we liked the windmill ordering idea. It worked a treat. Food was good and tasty and coffee was as it should be. Wed stop here again.
A great find, on the outskirts of Keswick - but well worth the drive (or walk!). Seems to be busy all of the time. Dog friendly. We had the Eggs Benedict and the Tiroler Grostl (new one on me but, outstanding and filling !!). Dont forget to put your windmill up straight when youre ready to order (youll see).
A lovely little pit stop.
Perfect place to stop for a light bite, immaculate kitchen sure sign of good food, warm welcome.
What a charming place, lovely food and drink. Lovely, and very attentive staff. Well worth a visit. Vegetarian options: Good choice.
Lovely icecream.
Lovely stop for breakfast before visiting Derwentwater and CatBells. You might think I d have a bit of regret shovelling a mountain of tiroler gristl before ascending CatBells..but I d do it again, it just tasted too good.. very dog friendly and good coffee.
Lovely. Coffee was good. Food menu you looked very nice...so food next time we visit!
Lovely cafe with good choice of food
Lovely coffee and French toast in a cosy cafe. Exceptional service from happy staff. So welcoming and friendly. The place was pristine and lots of homemade items to choose from. Food
A lovely cafe
Been here many always return when we are in the area ,food is fab and always make you feel welcome give it a visit you wont be disappointed Parking: Quite a busy location, but you always park further along the road if you dont mind walking a short distance. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access for wheelchairs cafe is on the ground floor quite a large seating area and good outside tables.
Visit this place regularly on our trips to or from the nearby marinas. A great spot for coffee and a scone. The rest of the menu also looks pretty good but cant comment as havent tried much. Service is always friendly and efficient. Well definitely be back.
Excellent as usual...nothing bad about this place
Walked past this many times, arrived a little late for food so just bought a couple of drinks and asked for tap water too as it was hot. Got serviced with the cold drinks and a glass of hot water. I kindly asked if she could change it, she grabbed the glass threw the water over a bush then used the hose pipe to fill my glass.. not the best experience. I can only presume the heat was getting to her , but wont be going back
Lovely food in a stunning location!
Friendly
Lovely staff lovely food
Breakfast was gorgeous.
Lovely spot for food and drink, unfortunately during peak times it s a battle to find parking unless you re lucky
Fantastic place for tea and cakes
Good place to stop after a walk. Sat outside but under cover, safely under cover from the showers. Service was quite quick and the food was good. Food
Great food again. Superb service.
What a gem of a place!! Staff so friendly and over-and-above helpful, coffee & scones delicious! We just wished they could be open a bit longer so we could have an early evening meal there! Vegetarian options: The staff went out of their way to check that their cheddar was vegetarian and all of it is! Dietary restrictions: Oat, almond, coconut & soya milk was all available.
Were staying in the village for a week so popped in for breakfast. Really enjoyable, bacon was tasty. Will be back for brunch/lunch with a wine later in the week. Will update this review if anything new Put your flower in the bottle when youre ready to order * Staff are great made a big fuss of our boxer Dottie. We didnt want to leave our week away! **update popped in for lunch had the BLT and the veg pesto ciabatta with portion of wedges (gorgeous!), glass of wine and a cider. All was delicious.
Wonderful poaches eggs and avocado. Lush Red Velvet Cake. Quick and efficient service with the Put your flower in the bottle when youre ready to order system. Doggy friendly too!
Brilliant location, brilliant service, brilliant food as always and a fantastic brew
What a lovely place to have a cup of tea and a cake very busy with customers, staff were warm and friendly we must visit again definitely
Ate there in June with our newborn it was amazing We had a return visit with the family standards had not dropped one bit food was amazing as usual The staff even remembered us from our last trip Cant wait to go again
Had a great full Cumbrian fry up here which was delicious. Very quick, friendly service. Will definitely be back.
Friendly staff, lovely place. Only stopped for a coffee but will be returning.
Great soup and cheese scones
Always great, good menu, decent prices, lovely staff and service
Brilliant food, warm and cosy with towels for the dogs to lie on. Happy puppies= happy mom!
Fine, but a bit average, both the food and the atmosphere feels a bit like its been cost engineered to be just good enough rather than excellent. However staff where friendly and service was quick and efficient.
Lovely food, quick service, a firm favourite of ours. Definitely worth the visit.
Staff, food, service and setting... always amazing. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free always available Food : 5/5 |
Visited last week after an aborted walk to Dodd Wood via the Allerdale Ramble route from Keswick. Only had tea on this visit but the cakes looked good and the staff were friendly... Spacious and light...
Lovely spot after a hike up Catbells. Had a lovely fruit scone and coffee. People and dog friendly. Treats and water bowls available, and towels if needed. Well worth a visit to recharge after that hike!
Excellent service and delicious food. All the food we had was amazing. Absolutely delicious.
Always a place for us to visit whenever we are in Keswick. Food excellent and the staff are amazing. Such a lovely place to eat and rest your aching feet for alittle while.
After a walk around the lake , we stopped off for lunch on route. Staff were lovely, helpful, and friendly. We had the spaghetti carbonara, delicious, freshly cooked, authentic, very impressed. So good, we had to try their equally yummy puds, we were not disappointed , we will back to sample more
Fantastic spot for brunch, especially on a wet and windy day like today! The Tiroler Grostl was absolutely fantastic, and my wife said the smashed avocado with poached eggs and bacon was great - especially with the accompanying red pepper salsa. Friendly staff and nicely decorated ready for Christmas.
Tasty breakfast, friendly staff, clean toilets and nicely decorated with Christmas decorations
Called in for a couple of hot chocolates with Baileys and Rum, just what we needed after walking from Keswick
Great place for a cup of tea and cake after a days walk. Friendly staff.
Really good bacon sandwich and coffee. Im also told that the veggie eggs Benedict is a thing of beauty and joy
First time in here and blown away by the standard of food and the lovely staff
Great lunch Tiroler Grostl and a cappuccino
Walked here from Keswick, about 3/4 mile so an easy walk. Ordered a fruit scone with jam and cream as well as a latte. Gorgeous scone, nice and thick, the clotted cream was a tub of Roddas classic cornish clotted cream which I always think is the best and a mini jar of strawberry jam. Latte also lovely. Couldnt have asked for a better scone or latte.
Lovely cafe, fast and efficient service, lovely food, and friendly staff.
Tasty and varied menu. Wonderful artisan bread. Lovely mushroom and thyme soup and a genuine Cumberland sausage sandwich. Interesting selection of homemade cakes and traybakes on offer too
Food could be better for the price, but it was good overall. Great service table!
It was an OK place for a coffee and cake service was good.
We had a lovely meal in a really friendly atmosphere
Could do with a few more vegan and gluton free selections. What was available was lovely.
Dont go often but always enjoyable!
Nice food friendly cafe
Well worth a visit!
Very good all rounder gets busy so get there early
Lovely place to stop off for a snack or a drink.. whether youve been hiking around Derwent and need a rest or out for a stroll, its a lovely environment to relax in. I always try to pop in for a mid day sausage sandwich and a cuppa during my yearly Keswick trips. The staff have always been very welcoming and supportive and its been a genuinely nice place to watch the weather go by.. Ive only been in at Christmas time, and its very tastefully festive.. enjoy every visit Wheelchair accessibility: Might be a little tight at the entrance, but ramp accessible, doors wide enough, little tight inside, but capable. Unsure about wheelchair toilet.
Pricey as this is the lake district. Drinks came after food which is schoolboy error. Cake, scone and cheese scone all had great flavour to them. Highly recommend the lemon drizzle cake. Good position. Dog friendly. Parking is pretty good. Great service from first waitress, then lack of finesse from the second. 5 stars for food as shown
