No longer a Chinese Restaurant. Currently TAKE AWAY ONLY
Got a takeaway on Sunday, 15th December 2024. The food was absolutely terrible. I've also had an upset stomach for three days since. Walking the mountains has been very tricky! I'm not happy at all.
I'm so gutted I have to write this review as the man who served us was absolutely lovely. But my partner is so sick right now and has been so poorly all night and that is not okay. I believe it might have been the mongolian lamb, I tried a little but my partner had most of it. I currently feel fine so we're guessing it was the lamb as that was the only differnce in what we both had. May have been an off day, but with food unfortunately you can't have off days. Cannot fault the service but I'm sure my partner can agree (from the bathroom) the food needs extra care as food poisoning is not okay.
Food: 2.5-star, service: 1-star Our specification of "no mushrooms" was ignored. Sevice is poor. We had to ask other waiters, sometimes multiple times to get anything, including water. Both soups we ordered were terrible. We had 1 spoon of one of the soups and left it. The noodles we got were completely bland. 2 other items we ordered were quite good.
Real misery. Went in to order takeaway. The bloke at the bar said 2 and a half hour wait on a Sunday evening. He spoke as though I was a major inconvenience entering his establishment. There weren't even that many people in the restaurant. Oh well
Came here for the friendly lgbtq+ restaurant, I went to the mens toilet and changed into ladies outfit (a bit like mrs doubtfire) had a great meal, licked the plate clean. I’m vegan and the plate of fresh air was excellent.
+ generous portions + the chicken in the chicken in green pepper and black bean sauce was soft, tender and juicy + the chicken fried rice was flavourful - the staff was not welcoming; infact all staff members seemed cold and very transactional - the schezwan prawns had a chilli sign beside it on the menu indicating it would be spicy, but the prawns tasted sweet instead - asked for a blackcurrant cordial with soda but was served with water instead - the Diet Coke was flat
My favourite restaurant from my holiday to Keswick. The food was excellent and would definitely visit again. I recommend that you get there as the doors open as the place was full almost instantly. Great service, would recommend to friends visiting the area.
Best vegan chinese food we've ever had. Staff were incredibly helpful when ordering as it can be a bit tricky making sure food is vegan. Couldn't have asked for more, and we would 100% go back next time we are camping in the Lakes. Just wish it was so much closer to us.
Prawn chow mein £18! No thanks
Excellent food and service happy days
Lovely restaurant with nice food and drinks
I am very sorry for the Owner of The Goden Hills and his poor health but I wish to complain about a meal I purchased to-day 05/11/24 which he assured me had no ginger in when I queried this, but the meal came with Ginger in it
Had takeaway was very good food
My kids enjoyed the takeaway food except for the crispy seaweed which was too sweet.
Rude staff. There s a really impolite old man in the entry. It seems like he doesn t want you to come and hopes you can leave.
Very delicious food, one of the best Chinese we ve had. Friendly staff Food
Friendly staff who accurately predicted time food would be ready for collection. Tasty and well prepared and packaged carefully. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free available on the menu but they need to be told specifically it s a dietary requirement and they take extra care in prep. Parking: 1 hr free in Coop close by. Very limited street parking.
Food is excellent and service is fssy
Tasty food and good service. Very busy during Keswick Convention so order early!
Circumstances resulted in a late takeaway order on a very busy Friday. Depite busy time staff were friendly & polite. Food was fantastic
Always head here for a great Chinese meal. Attentive service and a lovely range of very tasty dishes.
Can t comment on the food as we were unable to get a table this evening as it was a busy Saturday night but leaving a review here in the hope that the owner will read it and address the poor service we received when we popped in. The person behind the bar, though busy could have taken the time to just be pleasant and friendly rather than tersely inform us that it was a hour wait. It s the small stuff - the pleasantries that were sadly lacking. We ll be back in Keswick but we won t be going here.
Not amazing, its rarely open for eat in meals meaning the take out has a 45 mins to 1 hour wait as so many who would have eaten in couldnt, and the room is dark and unwelcoming. We both had a chicken and Beef Curry, with rice and chips, they tasted nice enough but you could almost mistake it for a vegetarian meal as there was virtually no meat in either of them, it was just filled with mushrooms, onions and carrots, which to my knowledge is NOT a Chinese dish and the chips are thin dried up fries, not chips. Overall if this is the best rated Chinese that Keswick has to offer I wont bother in the future. On a plus point though, the lady serving was very pleasant and apologetic for the long wait.
Good take away.
Brilliant food, well worth a visit
Best restaurant in Keswick. Staff are always lovely. The food is great and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Loads of vegan and vegetarian options. Vegetarian options: Loads of vegetable and tofu dishes
Best shredded beef ok sauce
Worst Chinese takeaway Ive had by a long shot. Chicken was slimey and taste boiled. Noodles had no flavour and even Prawn crackers where not great.
Went to this place on the weekend as I was visiting a friend in the area as soon as i got there I noticed how hygiene wasn t there top priority as tables was sticky and forks was filthy as I placed my order I noticed that there was a dog roaming around the restaurant but as a dog lover myself I didn t think much of it but as the food arrived I noticed in my chicken and sweet corn soup there was a dog hair floating that matched the color of the dog so I called over the waiter who was very Rude!! And he brought over who i think was the manager I asked for a refund! He refused as he said the hair was not from the dog but was mine but I m bald ! So i laughed thinking he was making a joke but he wasn t he refused to give me a refund and then told me to never come back. this place is aporling to say the least !! Needs closed down
Hi went here on Sunday evening, got recommended by a friend of a friend so we had good expections, however I ordered the honey chilli chicken as I would normally get in any other Chinese restaurant my friend had gotten the chicken chow main/ dog chow it came and the chicken looked like boiled rubber had no taste what s so ever however we did not eat the food as it was practically un edible so we went to the bar/desk and asked for a refund the guy who I think is the manager would not give us a refund as he claims that we should have told him straight away even tho we left as soon as the food came out in its terrible state so we more or less did tell him straight away he claims the only thing that he could do was take the drinks off from the bill however we had ordered 2 glasses of Diet Coke each and there was 4 of us so I don t understand how that makes up 5 pounds he was very rude to my friend who was bare in mind in a bad state of health and had told us to leave and not return well I have some news for you we won t be returning this place needs shut down or needs industrial cleaned as it was absolutely a mess the plates had hair/fur on it and the table was sticky the drink glasses was finger print smudged and the knife and fork they gave us had food on it and my friends soup had a dog hair in it the same colour as the dog that was roaming the restaurant and then the animal proceeded to enter the kitchen and I myself am allergic to dogs if there was a such as thing as a minus star I d give this place a -10 star absolutely disgusting and disgraceful this is an embarrassment for the Lake District why have so much beauty and then a let down of a resturant don t come here when in Keswick please for your own sake go somewhere that doesn t smell like a animal shelter and the price of the so called food was absolutely horrendous.
We ate at Golden Hills on Sunday evening and had duck with green pepper and black bean sauce, king prawns with green pepper and black bean sauce, egg fried rice and noodles with bean sprouts) The service was excellent, food hot and delicious, there is nothing I can fault. The restaurant was full when we arrived, but that is not surprising because it is very popular with tourists and people who live in Keswick. We were given a seat until there was a free table and were able to have a drink and look at the menu while we waited. Not sure what on earth the previous comment is about a dog in the restaurant because there certainly wasn t one there. A very clean and friendly place that serves excellent food
Best Chinese food Ive ever had. I could not recommend more. Please try it, you shall not be dissappointed.
The food was absolutely fresh, hot and delicious. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone. Attentive service and reasonable prices.
Managed to get a table on the weekend we stayed in Keswick and were pleased we did. It is a busy place, both the restaurant and the takeaway section. That says everything! Great menu selection to choose from, and the food matched our expectations. Superb.
Outstanding- big man sized portions, great food!
Delicious as always. Highly recommend Golden Hills.
I really enjoyed it here. The service was brilliant, the food was gorgeous. I highly recommend eating here.
Lovely food, lovely staff / owners, just a shame that they shut at 9pm on a Thursday and get so busy they stop taking takeaway orders for collection an hour before this! We only wanted one meal with some sides but unfortunately we were told no more orders
Great food.
Food was odd. I think the word slippery applies. Just odd. And the soupezs overdone with MSD
Disappointed!! Frozen cheapest of cheap scabby chips used. Wont be back!!
Really great food, the sweet and sour prawns were worth a six hour drive from London Not the smiliest of staff but could not fault the food or THE BILL !!!
The best Chinese food Ive had for a long time. I couldnt fault anything.
One of our favourite places to eat in Keswick each time we come. Always look forward to coming back for more. Caters well for us as Vegan too
It s closed on Monday 6 PM, 20Feb2023. An old lady told me she is awaiting since half and hour. There is no notice for closure.
The food and customer service was abysmal to say the least. The food was taste less and dry and when called to tell them about our bad experience with they food they were rude and unreasonable. Wouldnt recommend.
Honestly, worst experience to ever go to this restaurant. Food was below average and the staff was racist and ridiculous. He is pure racist and i would never recommend anyone to go for anything, not even for water.
Absolutely tasteless food and the staff is so rude that you can t even imagine. Even if you ask them for something which is not according to their convenience they will start abusing you. The lady came to give us the bill and when asked about why were we charged for adding extra chillis she started shouting and showing us attitude. And then the staff asked us to stop shouting when we were just talking. Be ready to be judged and verbally abused by them!
Just not very good. Nice people and atmosphere is fine but the foods just a bit tasteless. Made my mate sick.
Excellent take away and very friendly lady taking our order highly recommend
Excellent. Really fresh and tasty takeaway, no claggy after taste like you sometimes get, definitely recommend
That has got to be the worst Chinese takeaway I have had in my life
The food was ok but the chicken was over cooked
Vegetables tastless and washed-out, chicken is that slimy stuff you get in a plastic bag with yellow colured water from the wholesalers and noodles were really fine like glass noodles and just stuck together. Service was fine and wait not too long....but why would you go, unless the battered meat is better Dietary restrictions: They do gluten-free!
Ordered a takeaway for 2. Good sized portions. Efficient service. Satay chicken and lamb in black bean sauce a little too bland for our taste. Prawn toast and veg spring rolls lacked flavour.
Just finished our takeaway from here, superb, best weve had so far in Keswick, biggest prawns Ive had anywhere in northern England, my wife and daughter would happily have another tomorrow night and maybe we will, thank you so much
Probablys one of the worst chineses i ve ever had, chicken was pale and like jelly and noodles looked like they were out a 59p ramen packet. Only plus was the curry sauce which had a bit of spice and could mask the flavour that was on the noodles. Won t be back. Also don t do salt and chilli chips which is a let down
Great food but I dont appreciate the lack of flexibility regarding when it is dine in allowed.
Pretty good standard regional Chinese. Overload of sweetened dishes but no surprises there. Excellent ribs and crispy duck pancakes. Was disappointed that the Szechuan dishes had no Szechuan pepper in them but I think that was my fault for the expectation!
Best Chinese I have probably ever had Dietary restrictions: They were really good at catering for my gluten free girlfriend Food : 5/5 |
Went for a takeaway, we arent local and had seen the restaurant had good reviews, we ordered a takeaway of Singapore vermicelli n prawn toast, the guy taking the orders was so friendly, even let us sit inside with our springer, the food was delicious, one of the best vermicellis weve had, the prawn toast was nice too.
Back again 2 years later and same old story. Just online order from silk Road instead, food is ready in 20 minutes for collection Never got an opportunity to try the food. Stared to call at 17:30 for take-away. We were unable to get through so we drove there and the wire was out the door which is great for business at these times. But we were told that take away for would not be ready for 2 hours. It was a little disappointing.
Excellent takeaway and bang on time when it was collected.
Overall food was good. The mushroom fried rice was enormous. The staff were friendly and efficient. The only down side is the price of the food is very expensive.
We phoned today to place a collection order. They told us the pick up time was a wait of one hour which was fine with us. We then told the person on the phone we would like a sweet and sour pork..we asked if this was the strips or balls. He said it was balls, and we said we didn t want that then, can we have a chicken curry instead. He then rudely huffed/sighed down the phone, and acted like it was the biggest inconvenience for us asking a very simple question. State this on your menu so its not so unclear. Very rude. We told him to sod his food then, we will go elsewhere. It may be time for the owner to review who answers their phones. Unless it is the owner then god help you.
food was delicious and the worker I interacted with was super nice both on the phone and in person.
Small but very good food. It is also a takeaway. We had salt and pepper chicken and beef curry really good.
Had a great meal here whist on holiday in Keswick and would highly recommend! Lovely food!
Had a lovely meal this evening Will definitely be back Next time we visit Keswick J&A Scotland Food : 5/5 Recommended dishes
Never experienced such poor customer service!! It was very busy, but we were happy to wait the half an hour for a table and sit with a drink. However, the man behind the counter that greeted us was so unbelievably rude that we just decided to leave. We went over the road to the Indian instead which I highly recommend!
Terrible service and even worse food.
The main meals ordered by our group were very nice, as were the starters. The chips were more like French fries and were poor quality. Having to wait over 2hrs for a collection order was ridiculous though.
Read the reviews before you go all true I didnt lol
Weve been here a few times for meals, and weve always enjoyed everything weve eaten!
Order your takeaway early and you won t be disappointed. Dine in and you won t want to leave. Excellent food and lovely hosts. Don t expect to ring up and get food instantly. This place is in demand.
Had a lovely meal here while on Holiday
Lovely food and good service
Had a delicious meal tonight as usual.
Great food had booked a table in advance but unfortunately waited 45minutes for the main course there was no apology or any explanation why it took so long
Was very busy but we were treat amazingly the food was fabulous and the service was 1st class fab night
Food was okay, but most of the order was wrong and we were missing 3 dishes
First time here for quite some time, it gets busy very quickly and is popular with locals. Service was good but I found the food not quite as expected but still tasted good.
Visited here whilst away at the lakes. Unfortunately they couldnt cater for me as I have a severe peanut allergy however the staff were simply amazing
Excellent Chinese food. Slightly long wait but they had quite a few orders to get through on jubilee bank holiday. Food was worth the wait though.
Beautiful food great
Got spare ribs in BBQ sauce was definitely up there with one of the nicest BBQ spare ribs Ive had, ribs cooked perfectly, BBQ sauce lovely sweet rich sauce, lovely woman on the counter friendly staff, shame they dont have lucky boat number 1 noodles
Great food as usual. Service prompt staff pleasant.
Service fabulous and food was delicious .
I am writing this after just finishing the mealThis was one of the nicest Chinese meals I have ever had. Not possible to prebook but only had to wait 20 mins on a very busy Saturday night on the middle of summer with the town packed with revellers. Absolutely bang on
Excellent restaurant Been going there for 20+ years Always 5*
Went to this take away on the basis of the reviews. We waited 50 minutes for the meal and they missed a meal completely. Food itself is ok but not worth 5 stars. Tourist take away.
Really nice food we had to wait to be seated but the wait was worthwhile. We had the banquet for 2 and it was very fresh beautifully cooked and very tasty.
Great menu enjoyed a wonderful meal. Brilliant staff very polite and friendly will definitely go again.
I would move to keswick just for this chinese and very Polite Staff as a bonus.. will be back very soon
Fabulous meal with great service, wouldnt go anywhere else the food is good
Very tasty, generous portions, helpful staff, good value for money. Very busy restaurant and takeaway, tells you exactly what you need to know
Very good food, friendly staff
Average
Really lovely restaurant, always a warm welcome! Ive sat inside (pre-covid) and also had a take away from them, they have a large menu with something for everyone! The golden hills is more of a traditional styled Chinese restaurant but a must visit! They have really friendly staff that are more then happy to talk and recommend dishes, its clean and the foods great!
Had a takeaway from Golden hill, twice this week as its awkward going out to places still, so takeaway it was, yes you have to wait, so be prepared, (tip!!! Phone asap after 5.30) or you could see a big waiting time, which is a good sign, Definitely worth the wait though. The service from the gentleman out front was very professional and friendly, and the food was outstanding, hence why we had two in a week. Would highly recommend Golden hills.
One of the best Chinese takeaways we have ever had
The food was good but very bad service, forgot to bring us the full order, the waitress was rushing us that we need to finish up in one hour as the table was pre-booked, at the end they was coming like every single second to check on us to see if we have finished and that was very rude!!!
Love this place. Great welcome, great staff and fantastic food
All of my party loved their meals and the service was very friendly. I look forward to visiting again.
Quick and friendly service, food of a good standard. Recommended. Probably best to book if eating after 18:30!
4 of us went for a meal and really enjoyed it! Lovely service, didnt have to wait long for drinks and food . The food was really tasty and good quality. Definitely recommend the lamb pancakes starter! I would recommend you book as restaurant was popular! Thank you for a lovely meal on our holiday!
Food was lovely
Excerlent food and friendly service, highly recommend. Always have a meal at the Golden Hills when visiting Keswick.
Visited with my husband, and booked relatively late, however the restaurant accommodated us, and Im so glad they did. Wow, the food was amazing, we had one of the set meals for two. Each item was delicious. Will most definitely return when next visiting Keswick
My second visit to a Chinese Restaurant. The food was delicious just like the other one I visited. A place to revisit next time in Keswick.
Excellent food and great service despite them being rushed off their feet. Will be going here again next time Im in Keswick.
Lovely takeaway at a fair price.
One of the best Chinese take away weve had, ordered at 6-25 collected it at 8-25,they were so busy, and you can understand why, with the quality of the food
Food was okay, but sits heavy in your stomach. We ordered mushroom chow main and sizzling veg with egg fried rice. Fairly standard chinese takeaway cuisine, but quite expensive all things considered, but fairly typical of Keswick prices.
Fantastic Chinese restaurant. Excellent staff, great food, good service and great value for money. Would definitively go again.
Absolutely lovely food, lovely staff, thankyou for a lovely meal
First we have been we will be back next year
Really friendly staff. Absolutely delicious food. Great prices. 5* made to feel very welcome.
Lovely staff, great quality food. Definitely recommend. Satay chicken was beautifully silken, tasty sauce, nice mix of veg. Prawn toast was great. Rice was to my preference, more like steamed than boiled.
Food was average, the wait for food was ridiculously long.. but no one made any effort to apologise for any delay.. staff were friendly when/if they spoke to us. Overpriced Chinese takeaway in my opinion. Wouldn t go here again.
Excellent food great service and reasonable prices thoroughly recommend
Lovely takeaway food - collected, eaten and hit the spot quite nicely thank you.
Had crispy shredded beef in honey and chilli with egg fried rice. Sadly not many vegetables included in the dish, otherwise very well cooked. Presentation could be improved if they had small traditional chinese bowls etc
Beautiful Chinese takeaway and staff were very welcoming.
Worked away from home for many years and consumed more than my share of takeaways. This is without doubt the best Ive ever tasted! Whatever you order off the menu its always 1st class and your never disappointed by taste, portions or price not to mention the excellent service.Visit every time were in Keswick.
Excellent food, excellent service, very friendly staff
Ok...for those desperate for Chinese
Nice family meal lovely food and great customer service
Best chinese in cumbria
Food was great and child friendly
Friendly staff ans great food. Thank you
Cant reserve if under party of 5 but worth the wait as food is very high quality. Will definitely return
Love this place. Really good chinese. Im two hours away but I drive up regularly to see the lakes and we always come here. Highly recommend.
Great food and lovely people
Excellent, tasty food and superb, friendly service.
Definitely the best Chinese within a very large radius. Maybe even the country! Prices can be a bit steep but it s worth every penny.
I d go as far to say the best Chinese in the UK. I drive a 90 minute round trip to collect a take away. Fella that owns it is super nice and can t do enough. All the food is fresh cooked. None of that frozen rubbish from some takeaways. Incredible.
Great food, great flavours. Doing everything well and safely during a difficult time.
Horrible experience. Dont even try talking to the guy at the counter. He is extremely rude and abusive while we went there to place a takeout order. We just said we want to place an order and he yelled rudely being dismissive. We just walked out. Worst.
Worst takeaway experience. Very rude person answering the phone. Didnt want to tell me the price of my order. Worst of all the food. Undercooked prawns and slimy overcooked noodles. I would never feed this to a dog. Run away
Tasty vegetarian options.
Staff attentive, food absolutely gorgeous. Wouldn t hesitate to come here again. Faultless!
Food over priced. Hardly any flavour. Small portions for what your paying for. Wouldnt recommend.
The best Chinese curry Ive had for years
The food here is really good and the staff were great. They even pop out to the shop to get some cream for my coffee. Go here and I am sure you won t be disappointed.
One of the best Ive had. Really good food & lovely staff
Nice food excellent staff what more could you ask every time I go up to kesick I always book there roll on next time
Food was amazing. All staff friendly.
Excellent take away meal Laura, not had one for a long time, will back
Very good Chinese Restaurant, staff were attentive and the order was taken swiftly. Food didnt take long to come out. Everything we ordered was delicious. The chicken chowmein was spot on, very succulent with plenty of chicken and veg to complement the noodles. Shredded chicken with honey and chilli was a lovely surprise dish that Id never had before, I highly recommend it if you like sweet/mildly spicy dishes. Spring rolls very very good. Chicken satay was much nicer than average.
Great service, friendly staff and excellent food.
Reduced seating at the moment best to book a table as always the food was exellent.staff so friendly one of our favourite restaurants
Easily the best Chinese restaurant I have been to. The food was really really tasty. Staff were really friendly and attentive. Would recommend to anyone.
Friendly staff, great food, well recommended...
Excellent food, love the place. Been several times and never disappoints
Pleasant atmosphere, awesome food and... great staff!!! Thanks for the good evening spent in your company.
Not open 16th Feb 2018 at 8pm.
Excellent food and friendly staff.
Great meal and company
EPIC
Very good meals
Excellent food as always.
Good service, delicious signature fried rice for £10, tea for £2.8, a lot of people eat, the price is expensive but worth it
Great food, great service, very friendly staff and a gorgeous menu. Reasonable pricing, food arrived quickly and was delicious, portions are on the large side. Thank you to everyone!
Had a takeaway tonight sweet and sour chicken, special show mein and mini veg spring rolls, it was lovely all very tasty. Fast service. Would definitely recommend.
Good food reasonably priced
Tasty and reasonably priced. However, a bit smaller dishes than expected. Open late for food.
Dont mind waiting 45min when its a bank holiday but then when your food is overcooked & dry very disappointing this time. Had to bin food, so dry & hard
Great service and great food.
Ordered two different meals yet both tasted the same...absolutely disgusting. Meats were processed, vegetables mushy. Overall very disappointed.
Food was great good and friendly service. Had the tofu vegetqble in oyster sauce and the sizzling garlic beef extra spicy
Good food dont be fooled by the decor, its dated but service is good & food is excellent. Well worth a try.
Fantastic as usual would definitely recommend
Good food
Popped in last night. Food was great! Would go back!
One of the best takeaways Ive had. I recommend it
Food was fantastic. Quick service. I would highly recommend this restaurant
The best king prawn in black bean sauce l have ever had
Lovely food and friendly staff
Great food and service, atmosphere was a bit quiet as I went soon after it opened. Also spotted that you cannot book if you are less than 5 people.
I have eaten in other restaurants in this area (holiday area) and I live in a holiday area and don t use local restaurants because they don t make the effort to attract repeat business, so you pay loads for little quality. The Golden Hills Chinese restaurant is a Friendly welcoming with good staff and really really good food. It s a bit more expensive than I d pay in the southeast but as I started munching it was clear why. Good sized portions of nicely cooked food and great ingredients. The king prawns were big, succulent and perfectly cooked the fried rice was beautifully seasoned and as tasty as a good Chinese comes. There s a reason this place is busy.
Delicious authentic Chinese food, good service and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed our meal and evening.
Used to visit this place I would say 20+ years ago, went back recently and still as good as ever. Service is prompt, staff friendly and the food is great. If eating in, get there early though because it is very popular. Would highly reccommend it.
A very clean and tidy and friendly restaurant with quick service and delicious food. Reasonably price too. I would definitely go again.
Really great food, exceptionally friendly welcome and not posh!
Amazing food, sizzling fillet beef with ginger and spring onions was amazing!!
It is rare to find a Chinese restaurant in the Lake District National Park. If you are tired of eating grilled fish and chips and want to change your taste and try Chinese food, this is a good choice. Our family of 8 spent a total of 102 pounds, which is a reasonable price. The only slight drawback is that the dishes are all thickened and a little sticky, which may be a little uncomfortable for those who like it light.
Excellent, service brilliant, staff fabulous, great night out x
Delicious food, friendly & efficient staff
Nice meal but all seemed a bit rushed especially after waiting for table for over 20 minutes
Just okay
Brilliant Chinese food Great service and reasonably priced. Ta
