St John's St, Keswick CA12 5AZ, United Kingdom
Traditional 17th-century coaching inn with free breakfast, regional dining and a cosy pub.
Meal deals Monday to Friday, good choice as well on the normal menu, we tried the steak deal, and the gammon. Food is excellent for the price, very busy, came very quickly, dog friendly, great choice of ales.
Lovely place central to all amenities. Room was brilliant with a window overlooking the street. Great staff very helpful. Breakfast was superb, And good value for money. We will Definitely be staying here again. They have parking out the back but we just parked on the street behind.
Had a wonderful meal here last night, chef accommodated our staggered arrivals and they were super attentive. Greeted with a very warm welcome and would definitely return - our waiter was absolutely wonderful. Thanks for a great time!!
Went in for a meal whilst staying in Keswick, had a poor experience a few months ago so a little tentative but pleased to say the change in ownership seems to have made a difference. The food was good, and hot, the landlord and landlady were really helpful and kind to our young child. Pleasant meal, nice people, would now return with confidence
Had an enjoyable stay at this hotel. I was staying there with my partner and his family. We were celebrating his Sister’s 70th Birthday. We had a lovely evening meal, followed by breakfast the next morning. Lots of good food and plenty of selection on the menu. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts and we all had a very pleasant stay. Lovely little touches by the owners, we were each given a little Christmas gift of festive chocolates in our rooms upon arrival. Thank you once again
Brilliant atmosphere and very friendly and attentive staff. Good pub food which was wonderful and real ale even better. Nice selection of games in the bar area to occupy the kids whilst the adults have a couple! We didn't stay over so can't comment on the rooms and the breakfast 😀 We will be back!
Despite calling a few days ahead to book in our large party which I explained included dogs and young children, we were given an extremely rude reception - before being reluctantly led by the landlady to a table laid up for a different booking and told we had to fold down our buggies and leave within 2 hours. (There were other buggies in the bar area so this seemed particularly odd). We all felt really uncomfortable so decided to leave rather than let the atmosphere spoil our meal. Extremely disappointing as we had planned our trip to Keswick around a meal here. But delighted m to say all was not lost though and we found somewhere with a much more friendly and accommodating attitude.
The George was always one of the best pubs in Keswick. We returned for a special birthday meal to find it is nothing like it used to be. No atmosphere in the bar or restaurant The food was very mediocre at best, both starters and mains dry. The dining area was cold and drafty under the window. One of the waiters did not have a clue what he was doing so unfortunately we won’t t be returning here again.
Amazing experience and perfect location in the centre. Comfy bedroom, great night life and very very good breakfast. The staff are friendly and accomodating. 10/10 Rooms : 5/5
We stayed for 2 nights on 14th December 2024. The room was very warm and the beds were very comfortable. The shower room was fine could possibly be freshened up and the grouting touched up but this was a minor observation. We would definitely stay at the George Hotel again. The owners were very friendly and helpful.
Great location, very friendly and welcoming staff. Good beer selection and a nice atmosphere in the bar. Had a great stay and a nice breakfast. Would Recommend without hesitation.
Thank you for taking me in when the hotel I was booked in decided to close due to insufficient customers and failed to let me know. Very friendly staff and a good breakfast. A great place for a base to explore Keswick and the wonderful countryside.
Such a warm and friendly place, food really good and staff very attentive, nice clean atmosphere. Not the 1st time I ve been here and won t be the last!
Food was very poor have been several times in the past and the food was excellent Food and drinks: Drinks ok food poor
Great location. Room above average and very comfy bed. Staff and locals also nice. Will return.
Great stay.staff very helpful and friendly .dinner and breakfast very good.will definitely stay there again.
An amazing stay with our party of six. Top friendly hosts that made our time there even better. The food is delicious and very well priced. Thankyou!
The George is a straightforward Marstons pub in St Johns Street in Keswick The helpful friendly staff greeted us at the as we came in. The warm pub atmosphere on a freezing November night was most welcoming. All the real ales were perfectly kept, as good as my favourite local pub in Manchester. We enjoyed our meals in the large dining room. Other customers were eating their food in the smaller rooms nearer the bar. My chicken and mushroom pie was delicious and the price was much more reasonable than other hostelries in Keswick. Roger Greenhalgh Walkability: Town centre in Keswick.
The way we have just been treated is absolutely despicable. The woman told my granny she was lying multiple times even though multiple people over heard a conversation proving my granny was in the correct. She then refused to have us due to having dogs even though she told us we could. She was rude so many times, walking away and even got her husband to chase us down the street. It s disgusting. Do not go to this place they clearly have treated people like this before. No surprise.
Have dogs??? Special occasion???? Avoid, avoid, avoid!!!!! Details to follow when I ve calmed down a little
Booking in August 24. Super poor service and completely disorganised staff. Management had appalling attitude. Would avoid if you want a stress free holiday. Not the same hotel since it changed hands in June 2024.
Had a very long wait for the food , bread roll with soup was burnt. Quality of food not great.
Great place
Just popped in for dinner and although its a very busy night they made room for us. The ale and pie is excellent as are the salad selections And for desert, the apple crumble with custard cant be beat!
I normally dont give bad reviews, however when you get a case of bed bugs and the hotel refuses to respond or offer a refund, Im left no choice. From other reviews it seems the ownership at this hotel has taken a hit. If you plan to stay here, double check your beds as I was bitten here. Rooms: Old and dated with high ceilings. Decent enough, but as highlighted I came down with bed bug bites.
Bad experience, the new owners were rude and had a terrible attitude to visitors. The response below is for a totally different group of people, so sadly our incident is clearly not an isolated situation.
We didn t stay at the hotel - we had lunch in the bar area. Food and drinks: Clean bar. Great menu and good value for money. Excellent service thank you Service : 5/5 |
Nice hotel at the top of Keswick just past the pedestrian area. Good food with a few ales on tap and various other regular beers offerred.
Excellent food and service, the George back on great form again!!
We were initially concerned about the dilapidated look of the interior but after asking to see our room and bathroom which was clean though dated, we decided to stay. We hadnt realised before we booked what an ancient hotel it was (circa 1655). The man at the desk found us a parking space at the back of the hotel which helped. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the breakfasts good and as much toast as you wanted and when you wanted it. We didnt get the chance to eat in the restaurant as we were visiting friends and they had booked our evening meals elsewhere. As we were leaving we met the the new landlords that were arriving and wished them all the best on their new venture. The staff made the stay all worth while especially the man at the reception on the morning we were leaving who also served our breakfast, he had only been with the company for 2 or 3 months but he was the asset the hotel needs. Rooms: Our room was dated but clean and the lighting dim but in keeping with the historic atmosphere of the building. Nearby activities: Very central for the town and the lake, all within a short walk.
I have visited The George for 25+ years and it used to be one of my favourite pubs/restaurants in Keswick with an excellent range of food and drink and great ambience. I was disappointed to find it has been transformed into a very mediocre pub/restaurant with a very limited range of food, which is especially limited for vegetarians. The bar and restaurant were very empty and lacked atmosphere, yet the staff were turning potential restaurant customers away, saying they were fully booked, despite the majority of tables being empty for the 1.5-2 hours we were there.
Lovely meal on a Monday night. My hubby is coeliac and there was an excellent gluten free menu. He really enjoyed his Gammon. Food and drinks: Excellent GF menu
Friendly atmosphere. Good service and food
Great pub, really friendly service and tatsy food! Would definitely recommend!
Im in here having a nice half of lager (moretti) Which is fresh and crisp, the lines must have been cleaned regularly nowadays! Currently having a look at the new menu which seems very appealing and great value so if I decide to eat here this evening then I will leave a review on the food. Atmosphere is very good so far, a lot seems to have changed for the better within the last couple of weeks. Lets hope this good vibe continues and this will be a new era for the George hotel, god knows such a long established business in the town deserves a break. It would be a shame to let the place down again due to poor management choices of which this business has been cursed with for a few years now! Onwards and upwards!
We popped in for a lovely lunch. The server was very friendly and the burgers were great!
Lovely meal dog friendly Food and drinks: Lovely meal Thank you Service : 5/5 |
Came in for something to eat and I got the surf and turf and all I can say is wow! Definitely good quality and good value for money, the hostess Paula I think her name was was very friendly and attentive! Will definitely be back!!
Wow is all I can say!! I ordered the steak and scampi and what a great value of money it is. And also the hostess Paula was absolutely amazing!! definitely coming back again
Food and drinks: Great value food Service
Great food, big portion and nice atmosphere. Nearby activities: Bustling Keswick, great walks Hotel highlights Great value
Recently taken over by new Landlady and Landlord.Prices better than before, food excellent and its a lovely clean place. We ate here twice during our weekend stay in Keswick. Wishing Paula and Tim all the best for the future x
Good quality food, generous portions. Great service
Came in for a meal absolutely delicious great prices and lovely staff thanks again
Just stopped in for a quick drink, to get out of the rain :) lovely bar, gorgeous decor and great value menu. Will definitely be back to try the food.
Initially told to bear with them as they were short staffed. Then after an hour told gas had gone off. No apology, no smile . There was a table of family with children and us. They were waiting as we arrived. We left with no food, hungry and angry!!!! Too late to start waiting elsewhere!!! Not acceptable!!!!
A little tired in places. Short staffed. Excellent position and staff tried hard with less staff
Worse meal ever. Would not recommend
Enjoyable stay helpful and considerate staff good food Rooms: Clean and comfortable Food and drinks: Excellent food and plenty of it not much chance of going hungry when you eat there Noteworthy details: Friendly and helpful staff
We popped in on a wet Sunday evening just for a drink....the pub was busy with diners and the food smelt absolutely delicious.... the staff were welcoming, smiling, happy and very helpful..... Aaron made the other half a delicious Vanilla Espresso Martini and she said it was twelve out of ten and gorgeous.... Will definetly return after looking at the new menu to eat and being made so very welcome x
Food was delicious, ambience was great in the dining area music wasnt over bearing or loud and a nice mix of genre. Will definitely be back
Our booking was for 6 plus dog made months ago, and checked week before. When we arrived told we would be in restaurant, dogs not allowed and nothing they could do. TBH pleased couldn t go into the restaurant as it looked very depressing. Managed to find a bar table eventually. The famous cow pie is no longer on the menu our only reason for booking. Atmosphere was very unpleasant, in the bar. Managed to get a booking in the Royal Oak instead which is always great! I ve been coming to Keswick for 30 years and this has always been my least favourite pub, and I ve been to them all, many times. Top it all my umbrella was stolen in minutes of arriving! Will never go back here!
Booked & went for Sundsy Lunch on the 30th June 2024. we should have known something was not right - 2.30pm and we were the only people in the restaurant/pub. ordered the roast beef & vegeterian roast - can honestly say it was the worse dining experience we have had, the beef was grey, stringy & of poor quality flopped on top of mash potatoes with 1 roast potato on side (i wish i had taken a photo). service was extremley poor i had to go and find a staff member, no inter action. i left my meal and should have complained but my wife thought it was best to just move on & NOT go back again. when we returned to our hotel we were told the George had been taken over & it was struggling & standards had dropped dramatically. as frequent visitors to Keswick we will give this a wide berth in future Noteworthy details: famous for cow pie -hmmmm??
Food was delicious, would come here again with the family. Kids meals better than the standard, my daughter enjoyed her halloumi bites and the food came out quite fast.
Good food, good service and lovely atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
Great service, delicious food and great location, a hotel worth visiting.
Booked a 2 night stay back in February but the day before our stay found out the new owners had only booked us for one night, staff wasnt very helpful over the phone got told have for find another hotel for the Saturday night, staff didnt know how to use booking in on computer, room was basic for what we paid, window rattled and banged closed it but room was too warm, breakfast was nice which was included as we booked through hotel, ideal location. Communication from the hotel has been awful no replies to emails or chat on website, even took forever to answer phone
The bar staff, and one in particular called Carl was surly and unresponsive to any form of communication. The bar area was a mess, and why they have the reservation book lying on top of it genuinely puzzles me - when they have a designated reception area. The new management are amateurs.
Had lunch at George Hotel. Great food and service was excellent.
Central located pub in Keswick with en suite rooms. Based on family experience of a stay 5 years ago, the George has plummeted for the worse! RECENT NEW MANAGEMENT CHANGE Please note these identified issues based on a family celebration 4 rooms for a stay of 2 nights this month August 2024 ! Dirty uncleaned rooms, particularly mouldy bathrooms, and heavy dust in all bedrooms, dies not feel clean on entry, nasty smell innocent room Showers in bedrooms are hit and miss TV not working one bedroom A family member was refused service at the bar, 2 minutes to 11pm even though a resident ? All public areas need a refurbish, and freshen up, has a very unloved, unkempt feel in general. However most staff are friendly, particularly a young male who was run ragged from early morning until late, and our waiter older gent on the second morning who couldnt do enough. YOU NEED MORE STAFF !!
Called in today for a drink, had a look at the menu but alot of the dishes I like had mushrooms in which I dont like. My hubby had a chat with the staff who went and spoke to the chef. They all went above and beyond and made me a lovely home cooked dinner. Which was delicious. We will definitely be back next time we are visiting and would recommend The George Hotel. Thank you
Great pub! Lovely people and the hapf pie/full pie are to die for. Full of meat/stuffing, these people clearly don t believe in shrinkflation. Love it!
Not good for food Food and drinks: Don t bother eating here as there are not bothered about it ether 5 people eating 3 roasts must have been kept warm from lunchtime dry came with gravy plus a boat of gravy I think to soften the dried up meat and vegetables 1 steak and ale pie had to go back as cooked to a solid dry lump the worst Sunday roast I have ever had and that s saying something after the mother in laws efforts. Drinking fine but find alternative options for food.
A cheap hotel where you get what you pay for (not a lot!). We stayed here for a week and had a mixed experience. The room itself (#5) was nice enough. The bedding and floors were clean, there were drawers and a wardrobe for unpacking our things. Decor was perfectly reasonable. The room had an en suite with toilet and shower and sink and everything worked well. There was some mould in the shower but it was generally clean. There was tea and coffee and mugs and a kettle, with milk and sugar. There was a tv but we never turned it on. However, the room got very hot during the daytime despite us always having the heating off. There was a window in the bathroom but it didnt open, and there was a window in the main room that was possible to open, but had no way of staying open. It was very stiff but wouldnt stay up. Worse, it didnt lock and is accessible easily from the outside. So anyone could just walk up to the outside, slide it up and come into the room and theres nothing you can do about it. A security risk, but no relief from the heat - the worst kind of window. The daily housekeeping in the room was virtually non-existent. They replenished the milk and toilet roll, and emptied the bin, but thats about it. Our dirty mugs from the morning cup of tea were left for us to go downstairs and ask for clean ones. They didnt replenish the coffee so we ran out part way through the week. They didnt hoover or make the bed or anything so the floor got dirtier over the week from our shoes coming back each day. The shower gel provided ran out after a couple of days and they didnt give a new one. We didnt ask but should we have to? Breakfast is provided, and it was pretty good. Tea, coffee, cereals, yoghurt, butter, honey and jam were out in a buffet style, and hot toast was brought to the table, and a meal from the menu was brought as table service. The cooked breakfast was nice with good variety. I had it every day and enjoyed it! Sadly, the pastries, pancakes and fresh fruit advertised when we booked werent available as they had changed management since we booked. There was no apology for this. It was what it was. Tough. One morning there was a power cut so breakfast was cancelled. They wouldnt open the fridge to get milk out in case their other food spoiled. The staff didnt try and pop round the corner to buy some milk or pastries for us. They didnt say we could go out and buy our own breakfast and theyd cover the cost up to £10 or something. No partial refund for the lack of service. Another guest had a young child and they got a handful of milks meant for cups of tea and a cereal box. No breakfast for us and that was it. It was what it was. Tough. One night there was a fire alarm at 01:00. It was so loud that it jolted us awake so suddenly that I had a pain in my chest for hours. We followed the fire exit signs to the front door and it was locked! The fire exit signs actually led us to a locked door. My wife called the emergency staff number and we all found our way out the back door and stood for a while before the staff member turned up and allowed us back in. No reason was given. There was a rumour it had just been a fault. No apology was given. It was what it was. Tough. Another morning there had been a smashed window. There was glass on the floor in the restaurant area. The staff were stressed and their attention, understandably, seemed to slip. Our baked beans were cold with breakfast, for example. The location is pretty great though. Keswick is a great little town and Derwent water nearby is lovely. So we managed our stay here okay, but this is not a place where the staff particularly care that you have a great stay. Its cheap and you get what you pay for, which is a room and breakfast and no frills. Ive given it four stars because all the basics are there. There werent rats or anything. And for the price it wasnt bad value. But it certainly wasnt a great stay. I doubt well be back in a hurry.
Recent couple of nights over the Keswick mountain festival weekend. Notably prices were normal and not the outrageously hyper prices many other places inc airbnb owners were charging. Well done The George. Typically characterful old coaching inn, great staff clean tidy room. Shame Jennings has fallen foul of Marstons and Carlsberg nonetheless the too continues to delight walkers and others alike.
Stayed at the George for my other halfs birthday. Beautiful room faultless stay amazing breakfasts and lovely staff. Cant wait to come back. Didnt want to leave xxx
Walkability: Good walks close by worth a short hike up to the water fall behind the pub !! Service
Dirty food and lots of flies that is the George hotel. Food and drinks: Just not good.
Had a lovely meal including very tasty vegetarian meals lovely staff
Nice place, nice food, Summer was very attentive, if the place had 4 Summers it would be
Allways I must to visit when in keswick. Its my favourite place to be to relax and enjoy a good drink or a meal !!! Also allow dogs which is fantastic Service : 5/5
We stayed one night at the George. The staff was very friendly. We stayed in room Nr 8 - very spacious. I eat the Half Cow Pie with plenty of vegetables. I liked it. The break first is included for direct bookers and was nice. Overall it was a good experience.
Great location in the centre of Keswick. Lovely friendly staff, very comfortable stay, great English breakfast and delicious cow pie . Would definitely stay here again
Very nice staff. Great food.
Absolutely love this place. The service is stellar and the staff cannot do enough for you. The food is excellent - we ve never had a bad meal and The George is always one of our top choices when visiting Keswick. The rooms are basic but very comfortable and clean and good value for the price paid. Will definitely visit again.
I stayed here for a few nights on a trip to Keswick. The location is about as good as you could hope for, right in the center of town and a quick walk from the bus stop. The pub downstairs is fine but not great; I did not try their food so cant comment. The room itself was a good value for the money, with the comfortable bed (most important part!) being the highlight. My main criticism is that the WiFi was quite poor, the TV could use an update (theres no excuse not to own a smart TV in 2024... theyre so cheap), and I wasnt able to get my shower working so opted to take baths. I was overcharged for my room by someone who made an honest mistake, and although I found it slightly frustrating, they fixed it for me without much hassle. All things considered, its not luxury accommodation but it was perfectly fine for the promotional price I paid. Im not sure it would be my first choice if I had to pay full price, but Ive certainly stayed in worse places. 3/5
Mixed bag for dinner. Service and ordering was a bit slow and disorganised for a Monday night. Very dog friendly and cosy and great location. Food and drinks: Others loved their sausage and mash and fish and chips but the veg curry was very basic and didn t know it was veg with meat additional. Food arrived at different times
Called in here as our go to pub in Keswick when we are up in the Lakes. We were this time disappointed with the welcome and service. Having ordered drinks, paying by card and told just press green or something and got charged £7.40, wasnt given time to look at what it was !! I then got some menus and went to choose as did another group of 3. This was 17.15 with hardly anyone in the pub. I went back to the bar to order and was told that I couldnt order any meals ! To my surprise.. I asked why and the reply was chef told me and it will be at least 1hour and a half... crazy.. been in the past many times and it has been packed to the gills and the food was delivered and managed well with good service. Not impressed.. they should have informed us and the other 3 of this at the time of ordering drinks so not to waste my time and money. We all left to find food elsewhere as others did who came in after us.
Stayed 4 nights and enjoyed every minute. The staff made you feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Food is great value and fresh both breakfast and evening dinner. Bedroom was large and comfortable. Look forward too staying again in the near future. Rooms: Big rooms Walkability: Close to everything in Keswick. Walks from the door Food and drinks: Great value food, good portions well cooked. Cow pie excellent could feed 2
Owner herself dealt with our order. Hot food and good seating. Would definitely return. Food and drinks: Good food. Had mushroom & spinach lasagna, soy cod and fish pie.
Great hospitality from Wes and Annette,do very helpful and friendly.Great location, good clean rooms and great food and drink.
My wife and I had an evening meal at the George Hotel on Thursday 22nd February 2024. My wife had the soy glazed salmon and I had the chicken, mushroom and cider pie. Both meals were excellent which we would both highly recommend. The staff and service was excellent and we would highly recommend to any one visiting Keswick to give the George a visit.
Really lovely pub! It needs more visitors. Warm welcome from the staff, they are friendly and engaging to talk too. Dogs welcome too and given treats. Recommend calling in for a pint and meal
After the Royal Oak..a Hotel with a bar I think this is a pub with rooms. More to Ic and Flics taste. A little tired in places but full of character. There is a separate restaurant room but diners were chomping down in the two bar rooms. Ic and Flic had Wainwright amber..a Marstons beer. Good wine.
One star for the 2 people serving and cooking in this restaurant. Booked a table for 8 people weeks ago 7.30. Sat 9thMarch 2024. Entered the restaurant, was asked to go to the bar for our drinks as only 2 staff in. Asked how long food would take to being served, as the restaurant was full and no one was eating, 20 minutes . I asked be honest hope its not 90 minutes. CANT say was the answer and the staff member would only say approximately 20 minutes . Gave benefit of doubt. Ordered the a main course only. 9.30 pm WALKED OUT. Offered a sweet for free for our wait at 8.30. At 9.30 asked to speak with the manager. He confirmed exactly what the member of staff said on taking our order. OUR CHEF WAS SACKED THIS MORNING AS HE DIDNT WANT TO COME TO WORK TONIGHT, AS HE GOT WASTED ( drunk) THE NIGHT BEFORE. Recommendation cancel all bookings until enough staff are available to service the restaurant, THE CUSTOMERS CAN THEN MAKE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS. Do not discuss staffing problems with the customers.
09/03/24 restaurant booking,no chef at all, waited 2 hours after weak promises of fulfilling our order, just about got food elsewhere as this was a Saturday evening, felt extremely let down, spoilt our whole evening, owner just new could not fulfill our order for food, left us just sat waiting, dishonest with his promises
Very enjoyable stay at the George Hotel. Great choice of breakfast. Lovely clean comfortable bedroom and the staff were so courteous and welcoming. Would certainly stay here again.
Booked a table for 7.30pm last Saturday night for 8 people a group of friends, as we have eaten here previously over the years. On arrival we were asked if we could get drinks from the bar as they were short staffed. We were called to our table, on being seated we looked around and no other tables were eating no meals being served. Our food order was taken and we asked how long our food would be the member of staff replied sarcasticly about 20 minutes but that is a guess ? 8pm came and went appologies were given and were advised by a member of your staff they had no chef due to them being drunk the night before and they were not in, but were offered a free dessert, we said thanks and we would wait another half hour went by and we were offered free drinks from the bar, but we would have to fetch them and charge to the table, this we did not partake in, a further half hour had passed and we asked again thinking it would not be served shortly and your member of staff offered/advised to go elsewhere to eat, being a party of eight and being late we would struggle to get in elsewhere. One of our members left and checked a nearby establishment if they could accommodate us, they could. We asked to speak to the manager, who did come to our table and explain the no chef situation, but if you had no chef why not call your booked in customers earlier in the day to explain. That would have been GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE . Then to reply back to a member of our parties review added earlier today that it was all untrue !
3 night stay with friends. Oldie charactaristicpub. Excellent breakfast large choice, served by the lovely Stan, whom nothing was too much trouble for Rooms
Came in late for food and the kitchen fitted us in despite having closed a few minutes earlier. Amazing food the pies were insane! Walkability: Walkable from all car parks in Keswick Food and drinks: Pies are well worth ordering!
Had the famous cow pie! OMG... The tastiest pie I have ever had. So worth a visit x
Waitress friendly x
The photos on Google Maps definitely make it look better than what it is. Its a basic pub with basic food. Friendly staff.
Wasnt keen on this pub if Im honest. Nothing particularly wrong with it, it just wasnt my thing. Seemed like it could do with a really good clean.
I ve repeatedly stayed here. It s cosy and the breakfast is excellent. Stanley in particular is a warm and generous host.
Cow pie to die for came with sides of vegetables and separate gravy Makes a great change from meals coming swamped with gravy. Service was helpful and friendly staff. Service
Had a great stay for 3 nights. Lovely breakfasts, we also had dinner. All food was delicious . Rooms clean and it is in a great location in the centre of keswick. We will definitely stop here again.
Lovely central dog friendly hotel Annette, Wes & all staff couldnt do enough for us. Large comfy rooms well equipped, clean powerful shower. We didnt need to venture out in evening, friendly bar & lovely restaurant with a delicious selection of food. Will defo be back very soon. Excellent value for money.
what a cracking pub to visit in Keswick, an old coaching inn and still looks like one but fantastic looking pub inside and out and all walkable if staying in Keswick was there over christmas and the pub was open on Christmas Eve and Christmas day and evening and Boxing day was fab met local people very friendly and the landlady and staff were brilliant can recommend visiting the George in Keswick
Good place for food and drink staff helpfull and happy
Favourite Keswick pub! Great welcome, beer & food, in a cosy setting! Perfect after a long walk! Thanks!
Thanks great pub
Great venue for our annual reunion The beer was good and consumed in copious quantities Rooms
Did not stay in the hotel, only visited for lunch on a busy day between Christmas and new year, lovely pub, great atmosphere and the food was delicious, spoilt for choice on the menu. Dog friendly, staff were really great, table service which was also always appreciated .
The food has gone down hill since Marstons have taken over. The staff are friendly but £13 for this meal is unreasonable. Pub is good otherwise.
Staff were nice under bad coditions. No breakfast served any more, poor food served for evening meal. Beer was nice. Rooms very tired. Bed linen is clean but worn, mine had a hole in it. Not worth the money Im afraid. Shame its always been a favourite. Rooms
Staff friendly, food was delicious with good portions and reasonably priced Nearby activities: Central location Service : 5/5 |
Lovely old hotel in the heart of Keswick. Very friendly people who were welcoming and helpful. Rooms were spacious and the shower was clean and hot. Comfortable bed with nice linen. We had 2 dogs and a water bowl, bed and treats were provided. Excellent location for shops, walking and lakeside. Would go back.
Friendly fast efficient service. Tasty food.
We are the cow pie, it was ok. Pub could do with a clean or maybe because it was so dark inside the pub and it was in the middle of the day.
Old pub redone . Excellent food.
Worst meal and pint weve ever had
Sadly this place is nothing like it used to be. My husband had the pie and it was a sorry affair compared to the amazing cow pie you used to get there. I had the fish and chips which were very underwhelming. My last of many trips there I m sorry to say.
Ordered steak pie and chicken leak and bacon pie for lunch, steak pie was nice but chicken pie was void of chicken only 2 small squares, when this was fed back the lady said dhe would feedback to the chef, we waited for her to comeback with any further information or even a reason but nothing. Very disappointed and wont be returning or recommending given the price for the meals
We called in after a walk for a drink and a meal. My steak and ale pie was excellent, as was the mash, gravy and cabbage. My wifes salmon was very good as well. Are the few negative reviews posted by customers or competing pubs?Really helpful and friendly service too, will definitely call on our next visit to Keswick.
Rooms were clean staff were all lovely. Breakfast absolutely disgusting. So called best breakfast in keswick :( the pic they posted on their page looks absolutely nothing like what we got served.
What a brilliant stay we had. Lovely friendly atmosphere. The place is spotlessly clean.
Walked to Keswick from Threlkeld along the Old Railway Line and needed to have food before the return walk. Had Burger and Sandwiches which were very nice, pleasantly surprised. It did feel a little bit expensive but it was in Town centre. Thank you Safety: Very Friendly Walkability: Easy access from Town.
Had supper early on a Friday during our Feb break to Keswick. It is under new management but they ve kept the infamous cow pie on the menu which is a holiday landmark for us. Still as tasty and over-indulgent as ever. Staff were great. There s no way to add a tip if you are paying by card which was a bit embarrassing, so bring some cash for a tip if you go as I am sure you ll enjoy the meal and service as much as we did :)
Unfortunately this resturant/bar allows dogs to be not just all over the chairs amd sofas but on the tables. Surely Im not the only one who doesnt like the idea of eating on the same table as an animal. Yet when questioned ZERO dome about by management. I would avoid if you want a clean animal free eating table.
We called in for a drink in a Sunday afternoon. We had eaten lunch earlier but the smell of the food was so good we had to order something. We chose the baked Camembert with a few sides . Delicious! Service excellent, very warm friendly pub.
First time in Keswick for a walking weekend, and this hotel is quaint. Its clean and tidy, but the floorboards are feeling their age....am presuming its a listed building so not too much can be done. Ideally situated, in town but away from the main street.
Thought give this place a try and so glad we did. 6 adults 3 dogs. What a friend and warm welcome we received. 2 large breed dogs aswell. Very lovely old worldly traditional pub. Due to having dogs sat in the bar area. (Large lot of space area) not actual restaurant. Service was great. Just order at the bar collect your drinks. Simple great service no stress so perfect place and made to feel extremely welcome. Good menu choices and also had a separate Sunday dinner menue. Very well priced. Well definitely be back and looking to stay next time 2. N/a Food and drinks: Great double side menu great prices lots of choice
Food and drinks: Very nice dog friendly pub.
Visited here based on the website..we googled pubs in Keswick. The menu is NOTHING like it is online. They dont do 2 courses for a certain price 12-5. I questioned it and they said it was a miss print. The food was awful as well and well overpriced. Might call in for a beer but would never eat here again when in Keswick.
What a fab 2 day stay at The George. Was a special birthday treat from my sister Carol, Cat was amazing very helpful & funny, all the staff was so caring, & very helpful, food was amazing, I have two dogs & to find such a great dog friendly pub is fantastic. Be back very soon. Debbie x
Visited the bar, Very relaxed atmosphere, dog friendly
Food was fantastic even though the pub was really busy. The food came out on time and it was hot. Overall fantastic service
Really enjoyed our 2 day visit. Hotel room was clean tidy and inviting with the view of cat bells from our room window food was delicious and the breakfast was very tasty . The staff are very friendly and helpful, they cant do enough for you. All in all a very lovely place to stay. Thankyou Rooms: Lovely clean room with a great view fresh towels and coffee and tea facilities Nearby activities: You can reach pretty much everywhere from here Safety: Felt very safe Walkability: Everything is in walking distance Food and drinks: Beautiful food and drinks
Food and drinks: Fantastic food
Food great, beer even better. Central location. Staff friendly.
Sitting here full of burger and beer. Been coming here for years and the quality of food just maintains such a high standard. Proper quality grub. 100%. Compliments to the chef.
6 of us ate here on a very busy Saturday evening, the food was absolutely amazing and we were looked after so well, the staff were friendly and we had a laugh with them all. I would highly recommend this place but I would book in advance like we did because its a very busy popular place.
Called in for Sunday lunch unfortunately not impressed mashed potatoes and sweed portion size was ridiculous, almost none existing about a desert spoon full of each. Paid the extra charge for the duo of meat, Beef and Turkey and received less than my wife who ordered just the Beef ?
Best meat
Wonderful to see The George reintroducing home prepared food and menus as we always loved them. We had an excellent lunch time meal, friendly service and good choice of drinks
Enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch. Staff really friendly. Would definitely go back.
A lot better now change!
We had an extremely long wait for our evening meal approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. To be honest when the food arrived the pie was delicious. However, there was a large table in the same dining area as us and they were very loud and swearing profusely - we had our son with us and they were very inconsiderate. One of the group was just sitting vaping the whole time and the staff did not seem interested. There were two couples who left while we waited for our meal for the same reasons. If we hadnt paid up front we would have left as well. We wont be returning.
Cow Pie off the menu , we walked out Been going there for over 30 years I know things change but the place was never that empty
Located in a great place to literally walk out of the front door and be in the heart of Keswick. The staff were welcoming and friendly. In fact they were great. The breakfast was even better. I have still given them 5 stars even though the hotel is overdue a makeover. Dont let that put you off. The plus far outweighs the minus and we will be staying at the George again.
The staff go out of their way to be helpful. The hotel itself is a little dated ... but the food was lovely, and the service was excellent.I would definitely return
Nice pub. Not to bad the food
Rooms: Dated but clean. This is an old pub but in great location. Nearby activities: Lots of walk and water activities. Food and drinks: Good portions
This hotel has history it has location it has good mattress and (drum roll) comfortable pillows, food good, 10min from Derwent water happy holiday.
Went to the George tonight and the service from Andy alone was enough to prompt us to leave a review! Always smiling and always making sure that we had everything we needed, even getting the dog a bowl of water and fussing him which he loved. The food was delicious and came out piping hot and in perfect time. Could not recommend the George enough based off Andy s service alone
We had Sunday roasts and fish and chips. Great food and service!
We only had food here, another place cancelled so was late notice but so glad we found this! Andy was amazing throughout the service, advising best wines, beers and food. Great food and wine selection in the middle of Keswick. Will be back.
Had 2 evening meals, both were superb and excellent value. Lovely friendly staff
Traditional pub, friendly but extremely slow service. Food was good without being great.
Had dinner here few days ago. They had a diverse menu to choose from, food itself was so delicious. Nacho starter was very generous size! Partner rated the kebab. The staff made the experience, super kind, helpful and friendly but not overbearing. Id recommend booking as they were busy for a Monday and had to move tables to squeeze us in which was much appreciated. Take cash if you like to leave tips for good service as they dont take tips on card! Thanks again for a great meal and experience.
4 Stars The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you, they really made the stay extra special. Location is great as it is just off the main high street in Keswick however you step out the door and you are on the road so be careful you dont get squished. As a dog lover I loved that this place was dog friendly and I could bring my own doggo with me for a little break. I would like to comment on the food on offer but I cant because when we tried to get food on the first night at around 7pm we were told that the kitchen was overwhelmed with all the orders coming in and had closed. 7pm on a Tuesday....also shouldnt guests staying at the hotel get priority when it comes to food? This put us off trying to get food the second night as well so we went elsewhere. The rooms are functional and clean and the beds are absolutely amazing, I had a look to see what brand the mattress was because it was honestly amazing. The shower, while hot lacked pressure so it was as effective as standing under a drain pipe. The rooms are a little outdated and could do with a spruce but that could just be my taste. Also worth noting that most of the rooms are on floors that are two or three flights of stairs up so if you have limited mobility it isnt for you. All in all a nice stay for the two nights we were there.
Someone recommended the Cow Pie, and it did not disappoint! Two people could easily share, but made this my last Lake District mountain that I wanted to climb before heading home. Would recommend
Food and drinks: Lovely and friendly cow pie not as good as last time. Now in a tin dish not as good

Used to be best pub in Keswick, sadly the quality of both the food and drink has dropped. The ales are in poor condition and the food, although still quite good, is nowhere near what it used to be. Although the staff are pleasant, service can be poor at busy times. When we visited at the weekend, we ordered and ate starters, then were turned away when we returned to the bar to order main meals at 7pm because the kitchen was too busy. People arriving for table bookings at 7pm however were allowed to order which was very frustrating to us as we had already spent a lot of money in the pub that night but were turned away mid-meal. This is terrible service. Food and drinks: Food ok, ales poor.
Busy place we were very lucky to get a table for tea. Good ho.e cooked menus well worth a visit
Got here at just the right time before it got busy on Sunday, and after having our meal, I can understand why its busy. Lovely meal and generous portions
Such helpful friendly staff, comfy bed with quality linen, superb breakfast and great value for money in the heart of Keswick. Why go elsewhere?
Loved it. Went for an evening meal, was really nice, staff very attractive. Will be back. Also dog friendly which is a huge bonus Food and drinks: Very reasonable
Had dinner with friends at The George Hotel. They are famous for their Cow Pie. I had the smaller version and it was very good, although my preference might be for puff pastry rather than short pastry. The Lasagna dish was enjoyed by a friend as was the soy salmon dish.
Food and drinks: Good food.
Perfect location in Keswick town centre. We stayed there for 5 nights and went hiking directly from the hotel. Very nice staff. On Thursday we got to see the weekly market in town. It was very cozy with lots of people and lots of stalls in the square. Nearby activities: Many nice walks in the mountains, swimming in the lake, park with the possibility of golf, mini golf etc. ,rental of bicycles, canoes, paddleboards - many possibilities for an active holiday Walkability: Small town surrounded by mountains on all sides. Many mountain hikes can be started from the city centre.
The food is the best in Keswick
Stayed here for two nights Friday 28 Saturday 29th July as part of a stag group . Warm and friendly welcome on arrival. All the staff were welcoming and happy to help . We ate in the pub the first night , food was lovely . Nice location very central . Would definitely stay here again. Thanks for your hospitality.
We went in on a rainy day. Genuinely friendly service and excellent hearty English pub food was just what we needed!
Good menu, excellent food. If you eat here, make sure you have the fish pie - sensational! Id eaten half before I could stop to take a photo!
The George Hotel is a great little inn in picturesque Keswick... we had an excellent stay. The food in the pub was delicious. The rooms were spacious and airy. Would definitely stay again!
lovely pub x room clean and good size. would go bk to stay in centre off Keswick. Nearby activities: In Town fab . Walkability: yes out off front into town no taxis all walking fab
Came here for lunch whilst in Keswick and we were made to feel very welcome with our dog. The menu selection was very good with lots of homemade options. I hadn t planned to have a pie as I d had two recently, however they looked amazing and were huge so I couldn t resist and was not disappointed. Really tasty and great value. Would recommend if you are in the area.
Been going to the George for years on my hiking trips to Keswick for the famous cow pie. However under recent management, the cow pie has severely been damaged, no longer recommend. Just one big heap of meat with a terrible pastry. Needs to be resolved before I plan to return.
We booked a Sunday dinner here and were more than pleased with what we paid for all 9 of us.
Came in for dinner. We did not feel welcomed as we didnt have a booking. Other guests came in after without a booking without any issue. The food was okay, but service not so much. They were more concerned with flipping tables than serving customers.
On holiday ate at this hotel several years ago, before the change of owners. Back then the food did not taste so good but the portions were biblical. Last week on holiday again I tried the George because it had new owners and I was curious. Firstly, the staff greeting was friendly and genuine, the menu is good and fairly diverse. The service is great and the food, although still huge portions, now has flavour and texture befitting a good hotel restaurant. Priced possibly slightly above average, it is very good value for money and I would eat here again on my next visit to Keswick. Well done the staff of the George.
Definitely going back.
Best cow pie available
We have booked again Nearby activities: Loved it Rooms : 5/5 |
Evening meal the first night was dissapointing, our first order got lost ,breakfast on second morning was not of a similar quality as the first morning, staff were shouting in the kitchen and there attire was much to be desired, one lady had breakfast delivered straight to her lap!
only downside to a great stay was no on site parking but theres loads within a short walk Food and drinks: As its a pub its all there and the cow pie looked spectacular
Absolutely gutted Have been coming to the George for years for cow pie. We made a booking and on arrival no one knew what was going on or our booking. We were seated with our baby and were made to feel very unwelcome, the high chair given was disgusting we used nearly a full pack of wipes to clean it. I then asked for a jug of hot water to warm a baby sachet, when brought out we got told can you hurry up with that it doesn t look good disgusting. Then the cow pie.. ruined, chewy meat topped with a pale pastry and frozen chips. Nobody checked on us it was like we weren t there. We ve always recommended the George, not anymore
Just returned from a 2night stay. Weve stayed in Keswick many times, but first time at The George. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Comfortable bedroom, great restaurant, well stocked bar & friendly staff.......what more could you want????
Food was fine.
Excellent steak & Ale pie
Great food, nice choice of drinks and good service.
Stayed at the George on Saturday 14th-15th October, location was brilliant, facilities were very good, coffee, biscuits all on offer, bed comfortable, great shower, and the BEST breakfast in Keswick, the fella who served us Stan, was very friendly and funny, he made our stay even better, would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to family and friends
Beer is very good in the Bar. Cosy and lively at the same time. Food looking good as well. Nice pint of Cumberland Ale..
came here for dinner. food was absolutely amazing good environment and great service staff were extremely friendly and nice
The portions are super huge. After nachos, not even finished (for 4)we couldn t eat even a half of pie each. Consider that and the food is super fresh and delicious!
Just had a meal here, and wasnt impressed! Vegetarian lasagne, small portion, with pathetic side salad (more a garnish) and puny garlic bread. Felt afterwards as though I had eaten nothing, but my wallet was lighter by £30 for two of us. Keswick needs more QUALITY restaurants, urgently.
Theres no doubt the George has found its feet once more. The present management are professional and helpful. We enjoyed a family meal on Halloween night, the menu was excellent, we ordered curry, chicken and mushroom pie, fish pie, gammon all served with fresh vegetables. Although busy our meal arrived quickly, excellent service. We will happily return to The George. Walkability: The Hotel is central to Keswick
My wife and I spent the second night of our honeymoon here 48 years ago. This time we only had dinner, and the food and service was excellent. Good ambience.
Called in for Sunday lunch & I have to say it is the best Sunday lunch we have had in the Lakes, service & friendliness of the staff also added to a lovely meal
Bobbed in for Cow pie after an 8 mile hike, recommended by a friend.. Not disappointed, Fantastic dish, enough for two, but there was only one of me so I ate it all. . Very friendly welcome, cosy pub, gorgeous food. Definitely recommend.... Thanks George Hotel for filling my belly Food and drinks: Great food, hot, well cooked, and didnt have to wait long..
The food in this pub is extremely tasty, and the service is very quick and friendly. The atmosphere is cosy and warm. Definitely, well get back here.
Popped in for dinner on our first night in Keswick as we were staying just down the road and this place had caught my eye straight away. It certainly lived up to expectations; the cow pie was massive and filled to the brim with lovely slow cooked beef. Made my way through most of it and took the last part home with me as I was kindly offered a takeaway box. Proper pub atmosphere in the bar area and a nice large, secluded dining section. Both our meals were great and pretty reasonably priced, good selection of cask ales on too. Staff on the night were all gents, particularly Stanley who served us throughout and was helpful and attentive the whole way through. The other lads were great too and all up for a chat, which is always what you want in a pub like this. My only slight issue would be that tips can only be left in cash; which while generally the preferred method of hospitality staff, is somewhat unusual these days to be the only option, and I can imagine means the hard working staff lose out on a decent wedge because of this. This is clearly a brewery/ownership issue though and having spent a number of years working in pubs myself, one I imagine could be easily rectified with some tweaking of the POS system if the bosses really wanted to- perhaps reviews like this will end up making a change there. Overall: Great pub, tasty food and a top bunch of people looking after the place, well done team George
Perfect location right on the top of the high street. Staff very welcoming, breakfast was top notch although the Lorne sausage and tattie scone needed more cooking time to crisp them up. We had a lovely stay and would defo stop again.
Comfortable room, but noisy from shouting in kitchen and cold showers in the morning. But it was cold out. V good breakfast
Over priced beer
Food and drinks: Had a burger didnt taste like freshly made and was so hot/rubbery I thought it had been microwaved. Service/staff were very friendly. Service
No car park . Rooms: Small double . No point for charging phone Rooms : 3/5 |
Went for dinner and ordered a cheese burger. I think the pattys were microwaved, they were so hot and very rubbery. Would not recommend
Food was only okay. Seemingly the management of the pub changed earlier this year, and not for the better. The leek and potato pie had very little filling, just a mushy paste, and the cabbage on the side was dry and tasteless. The chicken pie was no better. The staff seemed a bit despondent.
Had 4 Sunday dinners the worst I have ever had was cold beef pork dry no mash roast potatoes dry and tasted bland the bill was £60 /I was very disappointed/we were the last 4 meals on Sunday
Good beers at a good price.
Sadly the famous quality food at the george is no more. First tiime in over 20 years Ive seen the restaurant virtually empty on a Friday and Saturday night. Says a lot. Rooms are available but no breakfast. Doesnt seem like the management can value a room plus a tenner for breakfast in favour of cheaper room rates (just add a tenner its not hard) Seems sterile... No curios or trinkets... Lost its 16th century atmosphere. Sad.
